Hi Up to and including version 1.29.0 of the boost library I had an object which inherited from boost::counted_base, and could actually within that object control when it should be deleted. The object spawned a thread which was listening on a queue, when there was pushed an shutdown message on the queue, I could safely delete the object. In boost 1.30.0 the counted_base changed name and namespace to boost::detail::sp_counted_base, but the way it works also changed - so now my object's destructor is called whenever it's going out of scope - which I don't want. Any ideas - or should I provide a small sandbox example Thanks in advance Anders Hybertz

[crc] Simple example please

Hi, I'd like to calculate a value for a cyclic redundancy check (crc) for a number of files. This isn't going to be transmitted anywhere, I simply want to compare the values to see whether the files are exactly the same. I know I can simply check byte for byte, but I've got a few thousand files and it's easier to calculate the crc for each and see whether any are the same first. I've looked at the crc library, but can't get my head round the example. It seems to test the library rather than show how its used. I'm after something like std::vector<char> MyStream1; // the whole file (about 500kb) boost::SomeCRCTypeThatIsOptimisedForSafetyAndLargeishBlocks<???> x; long = x.checkme(MyStream1); Could someone please point me to some code where a simple example is detailed? confused by ublas submatrix assignment

Hi, I am new to this and am confused by the (sub)matrix operations and also not up on the math nomenclature this group is using such as slices and strides. I am trying a reasonably simple operation of assigning a vector v(2) to a submatrix (3,3). For example, in matlab notation: m = 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 v = 15 16 m(2, 1:2) = v resulting in: m = 0 1 2 15 16 5 6 7 8 What is the best way to do this with ublas? I suppose I need to convert the vector into another type first, but which one - a slice, a range? I tried both with no success. Thanks a lot, Julian

uBLA performance

Hi, Ran off a simple test of the uBLA performance for sqare matrix multiplication. Looks quite good. Put in Intels Math Kernel Library for good measure using uBLA as the data holder but with a call to dgemm. Do you think these are the kind of numbers I should be expecting? Numbers below. Newbie query: no "deamon" thread?

I need to spawn worker threads that simply perform a task and exit. All the examples I can find seem to use join() to cleanup the thread resources from another thread. Isn't there some way to declare worker threads so that they "do the right thing" as they exit the thread function? TIA

[BGL] bad edge iterator range returned by boost::out_edges(v,g)?

This is weird... I'm still using BGL from Boost 1_29_0 (which may be an issue?). boost::filesystem help needed

Hi all, I have compiled the boost::filesystem using bjam and that seemed to have gone well. The first question I have concerning this is if it is normal NOT to have a libfilesystem.so. I can only find the libfilesystem.a. The path where this lives is quite deep. /usr/local/boost_1_30_0/boost/libs/filesystem/build/bin/libboost_filesystem.a/gcc/release/runtime-link-dynamic and /usr/local/boost_1_30_0/boost/libs/filesystem/build/bin/libboost_filesystem.a/gcc/debug/runtime-link-dynamic My current setup is an Ultra 80 running Solaris 9. I use both gcc version 3.2.3 for compiling and linking. The version of Boost is 1.30.0. For my second question. The section pointed out says to use a set instead of list if you don't want parallel edges. I guess I was hoping to have parallel edge removal using a list (insertion/deletion consideration appear to make the list a better choice for me). How do I use Boost with the Visual Studio IDE?

I can get the threads examples to compile and link with bjam but I am unable to get it to work from within the Visual Studio IDE (versions 6 or 7.1). Does anyone have a basic project structure that could be used in the IDE for threads? I am writing console applications rather than GUI apps.

I was asking this question for someone else. Except for trivial programs, I always use one form of pool or another. Spend a lot of time reading "pattern" books. To tell the truth, I have no idea what the "real" cost of creating & killing threads is for the various OSs. [BGL] vistor works w/DFS, won't compile w/DFV - appearent concept check violation - but why?

I initially posted this to the devel list. Apologies for reposting it to the user list but this is really a library _user_ question - not a devel question. I've now screwed around with this for the better part of a day and haven't figured it out. I'm off re-reading BGL book 2.5 concept checking explanation but I'll still baffled. I will post the compiler errors if anyone is willing to give me hand understanding why I can't get what I believe should be quite a simple case working. Here's the problem statement: --- I've got a struct derived from boost::default_dfs_visitor that I've been using w/out any problems in an invocation of boost::depth_first_search. The call that works looks like: boost::depth_first_search(g, boost::visitor(MyDfsVisitor)); ^- NP. compiles and executes fine. Now I'm trying to use the exact same visitor in the context of a boost::depth_first_visit call (so I can set the starting vertex). But I'm having big troubles. I tried this: boost::depth_first_visit(g, s, boost::vistor(MyDfsVisitor), boost::get(boost::vertex_color, g)) // note I'm using an internal, default color map ^- this won't compile. It seems to be balking duing Jeremy's visitor concept checking? The compiler errors are extensive and it looks like none of the visitor methods are being correctly identified. (e.g. missing vis.InitializeVertex ... etc. etc..) p.172 of the BGL book on DFS notes: IN: visitor(DFSVisitor vis) whereas p.175 on DFV notes: IN: DFSVisitor visitor. So I guessed and tried this syntax: boost:depth_first_visit(g, s, MyDfsVisitor, boost::get(boost::vertex_color, g)) ^- this compiles. But I'm getting an exception fault during visitor invocation somewhere deep inside the the RTL. Can anyone enlighten me about what's going on here? What exactly does boost::vistor(X) do? And why is it needed on the DFS call, and apparently rejected in the DFV call? Any help would be sincerely appreciated. - Regards Chris

Warning - Format library adds 48 KB

Boost::Format adds 36KB (VC7.1) or 48 KB (VC6) to my release executable! Details: Take one C++ Win32 application which uses both MFC and the VC STL, but not std::string. Optimizations are set for minimum size. In VC7.1 the release exe is 552 KB. Add std::string, adds 4 KB. Add boost::format, adds another 36 KB. (For each I just added one statement.) For VC6 SP5 the release exe is also 552 KB. Add just the '#include's for string & format libraries, adds 20 KB (VC7.1 didn't do this). Add std::string and boost::format, adds another 32 KB. Total added by format is (20 + 32 - 4) = 48. This is not acceptable for my application. Is there a better way to use C-style printf statements with std::string? Tom. Deprecated shared_ptr functionality in boost 1.30

I want the same functionality under boost 1.30.0 - but without changing any code in then main function - basically preserving the interface. Can somebody help me with this? The following simple piece of code compiles fine if m, v, and s are declared as type <double> but not for type <int> as shown. Why is that? Why is B[1][2] identical with B[2][1] ? I have also tried referencing it as [1-6][1-2] and it still has garbage in the array( same results after adding [1][2], as I can see the same value in [2][1]). I also had the assignment statements as [1-2][1-6] with no change in the output for [1][2] and [2][1]. Any help greatly appreciated on this since it is really confusing me. I found that using the documention wasn'te much help since it seems to contain errors. I had to look in the examples to see that fortran_storage_order was a function that needed the parenthesis, since the doc left them out in the text. But the examples had them. Dave

Hi. Is there a quick way to determine whether one's operating system supports the nanosecond precision clock? Also; I realise that BOOST_DATE_TIME_HAS_NANOSECONDS needs to be defined to use nanosec() method. But; should I be able (if my operating system supports it) to define support for nanosecond time resolution at installation time? I.e. would it suffice to use a bjam commandline parameter defining nanosecond support when building the Boost date_time libraries? Also; how do I configure nanosecond support for subsequent compilation of programs which use Boost and require nanosecond posix_time resolution? Greetings, Andre. If it's not a typedef, then make it a typedef in an OpenInventor namespace (same caveats). - If OpenInventor really does use a typedef, and if the typedef is inside an OI namespace, then hunt down and destroy any using directives (i.e. "using namespace OI;" or "using OI::whatever;") in any headers, and move any using directives inside your source files *after* all #include directives. No more than 10 types in boost::tuple?

I tried constructing a tuple with 12 types today without much luck. I've read through the headers to see if there was any obvious way of getting around the 10 limit but couldn't find one (I half expected to find something along the way of vectorxx<>, in MPL). Am I being stupid, or is there really no way of constructing a tuple with more than 10 elements? Also, are there any plans of integrating and/or making boost::tuple dependant on the MPL? I realize that tuple predates the MPL, but there's no use in duplicating efforts. boost::tuple has it's own compile time IF<> and also provides it's own typelist class which are both readily available in the MPL. I was trying to build boost-jam and boost-build executable with build.bat in Visual Studio .NET (Windows 2000) from downloaded sources. However, ended with single non-functional jam0.exe and truncated to zero length my own compiler cl.exe from Visual Studio .NET. Nmake coul'nt be used, because makefiles were not included. What is going on? How to compile or obtain needed boost-jam or boost-build executables under Windows2000? Or this BOOST is intended for UNIX only?

Newbee Questions on Directory Structure of Boost Libs.

Hi there, I'm new to Boost and have some problems understanding the way Boost libs. are built and installed. I downloaded boost_1_30_0. unpacked the archive and built the test library (I had installed bjam previously). I did the build step on two different platforms and with different compilers: - On Linux (RedHat 7.3) with gcc/3.2.2 and - on Sun SPARC Solaris 2.7 with Sun's Forte 6.2 compiler. I created an installation directory /opt/boost_1.30.0. Into this directory I copied the directory tree below boost/test and libs/test: /opt/boost_1.30.0/boost/test/... /opt/boost_1.30.0/libs/test/... I think so far everything is correct, isn't it? I do not completely understand the directory structure generated during the build process: ../boost_1_30_0/libs/test/build/bin/libboost_prg_exec_monitor.a /libboost_prg_exec_monitor.so /libboost_test_exec_monitor.a /libboost_test_exec_monitor.so /libboost_unit_test_framework.a /libboost_unit_test_framework.so Below the directories given above a specific subdirectory tree was created. Example: .../libboost_prg_exec_monitor.a/ /sunpro/ /debug/ /runtime-link-dynamic/ /runtime-link-static/ /threading-multi/libboost_prg_exec_monitor.a /threading-single/libboost_prg_exec_monitor.a >From this I conclude: 1. The builds are separated from each other in compiler specific subdirectory trees, e.g. the "sunpro" subtree contains the build results from $ bjam "-sTOOLS=sunpro" i.e. the sun forte 6.2 compiler and the "gcc" subtree contains the build results from $ bjam "-sTOOLS=gcc" i.e. the gcc 3.2.2 compiler on Linux. Obviously there is no separation by OS platform (Solaris or Linux). What would I have to do to build the lib. with gcc on Solaris? Where would the products be installed? Furthermore there is no separation by compiler version (e.g. gcc 2.95.2 is not separated from gcc 3.2.2). Is this considered unnecessary? 2. The libs were built with debug symbols (-g option) only), correct? I'm not familiar with jam and therefore don't know what to do to get them built with optimization active. It seems to me as if this should be rather simple because in ../boost_1_30_0/tools/build/sunpro-tools.jam obviously two variants of the CFLAGS variable for optimization are defined: flags sunpro CFLAGS <optimization>speed : -fast -O4 ; flags sunpro CFLAGS <optimization>space : -O2 -xspace ; Any hints are welcome. Using Bind on Signals

I am building a widget set using the signals and slots library. I have the need to be able create a functor (FA) that receives another (FB) as an argument to its constructor. I will connect FA to the signal of a widget, when FA is run it will perform a test and execute FB if appropriate. I want to be able to use the signal member of another widget as FB, so I am trying to use bind to get that function object for the signal. I am experiencing two problems: 1) When the member functor (FB) is bound to the signal of another widget, the slots don't get called. (No error results, but the connected slot doesn't print anything so I am assuming it isn't being executed). 2) I can't get it to compile when the signal has a <bool ()> signature, I can only get it to compile with a <void ()> signature. I am trying to assign the result of bind to a boost::function<bool ()> but I get an error saying it can't make the conversion, what type should I be using if not boost::function (note that it works if the signal is void())? The following is a commented test_case demonstrating the problem. Any assistance in binding to signals and compiling those with a bool() signature would be greatly appreciated. The detail I'm concerned about -- and it may not be a problem because I may be overlooking something -- is that the string I'm matching against can have zero or one 'C' field and zero or one 'O' fields. It looks like the "C(\\d+)|O(\\w+)" expression will match either of them if at least one is present, but after that, I would need optionally to match the other one. Matching the same field again would be an error. int64_t problem

Hi, I am using OpenInventor and boost 1.29 librariess. Both of them have defined int64_t: typedef __int64 int64_t; During compiling I get some errors: d:\work\projects\medint\dist\include\boost\cstdint.hpp(240) : error C2632: '__int64' followed by '__int64' is illegal d:\work\projects\medint\dist\include\boost\cstdint.hpp(240) : warning C4091: 'typedef ' : ignored on left of '__int64' when no variable is declared d:\work\projects\medint\dist\include\inttypes.h(75) : error C2632: '__int64' followed by '__int64' is illegal d:\work\projects\medint\dist\include\inttypes.h(75) : warning C4091: 'typedef ' : ignored on left of '__int64' when no variable is declared The only solution I found is to add #undef just before define at boost/cstdint.hpp: #undef int64_t typedef __int64 int64_t; But it looks as dirty solution. Problems Using boost:date_time library

I recently tried some simple tests of the Boost date-time library (Boost 1.30.0 MSVC6) and ran into problems. I don't have the original code in front of me (unfortunately I left it at work), but more or less, it looked like this: #include "boost/date_time/gregorian/gregorian.hpp" #include <iostream> int main() { using namespace boost::gregorian; date today = day_clock::local_day(); month_iterator it(today); std::advance(it, 3); std::string strDate(to_simple_string(*it)); std::cout << "New date is " << strDate << std::endl; return 0; } The first problem I ran into was that I got a linker error because the class greg_month (in greg_month.hpp) did not provide definitions for the following member functions: const char* as_short_string() const; const char* as_long_string() const; I quicky wrote some inline switch statements to get past that hurdle, but then the compiler started complaining when I tried to use std::advance. It is unfortunate that I do not have the exact error in front of me right now, but I did trace the problem to the definition of month_iterator. I found that if I derived its base implementation class from the class template iterator that it would compile without problems. Is this a problem with the STL that ships with MSVC6? Anyway, I was wondering if maybe there was something I had not set up correctly with my compiler that was causing me to get these errors. Any help would be appreciated. I have a string that I'm searching, with sub-fields that are delimited by '~'. I'm particularly interested in 2 of the fields, either of which may or may not exist, in an unspecified order, and are identified by an initial 'C' and 'O' respectively. The 'C' is always followed by one or more digits, the 'O' is followed by one or more characters. For example, these are all valid. ~A123~C456~MA4 ~C12345~OA1~A123 ~A4~MH1 I'd like to see if I can use regular expressions to say, "If there is a 'C' field, replace the digits after it with these digits. If there is an 'O' field, replace the characters after it with these characters." I can do this quite easily with two different regex search-and-replaces; if the fields were always in the same order, I'd have no problem with that, either. [newbie] Question on embedding/extending with boost::python

Hi all -- I'm working on an app that is going to be a C++ code engine which will be heavily extended through a series of Python scripts (objects, really). My desired requirements are as follows: The environment is a C++ state machine, and each Python object should persistantly maintain its own state. I assume I can instanciate a Python object and maintain it in C++, then call it when necessary. a) Embed the Python interpreter b) Be able to pass values from the C++ state machine into the Python object for internal use c) Be able to call arbitrary Python functions from C++. I am currently doing this with an event registration handler, where scripts will handle events they want to handle, along with the function that should be called when the event is fired. d) Be able to update the C++ state machine with an interface exposed from C++ I can do a and b easily enough - the examples make that clear. Where I'm having trouble is with c and d - how do I give a Python app hooks into an existing C++ state machine? I know I can write an extension easily enough, but by my understanding, that will simply give the Python object access to a series of functions, and not the objects contained in the state machine that the interpreter is running under. I could use "pull" operations, wherein the C++ app polls the objects for changed state in a loop and updates its sate accordingly, but that seems that it wouldn't perform nearly so well as if the Python scripts were able to update the C++ state machine themselves, so I'm avoiding that route. I had a co-worker suggest that I use Python as my primary execution environment instead of C++. While this would admittedly make some things easier, how much performance would I sacrifice with this route? I'm building a 3D application, and it doesn't seem that Python would be well-suited to such an application in terms of performance. There is potential for literally tens of thousands of instances of these objects to exist in this state machine, and I certainly don't want to hinder performance by moving the primary execution into an interpreted environment rather than a compiled environment. Any words of wisdom? Or am I utterly failing to communicate clearly, as I think I am? ;) Thanks, Chris

I would like to build the python library in boost_1_30_0 using Borland C++ Builder 5 (bcc32 version 5.5.1). Currently, this fails with a number of errors, the first and most significant being: Error E2401 C:\boost\boost_1_30_0\boost/python/object/inheritance.hpp 69: Invalid template argument list The statement around line 69 from inheritance.hpp is as follows: typedef typename mpl::if_c< is_polymorphic<T>::value , polymorphic_id_generator<T> , non_polymorphic_id_generator<T> >::type type; Is the borland compiler simply incapable of compiling this statement or (as is likely) have I missed something? [uBLAS] Expert Developer Advice Needed ... Maybe...

Hi Guys, After a significantly long break from using uBLAS, I have now been lucky enough to find myself in a new role where I can again use it! Having noted that there was no vector cross product in uBLAS, I thought I would implement my own. To make it really efficient and work in with the other uBLAS features, I thought I would try to make a compatible routine that eliminates temporaries and uses the other cool uBLAS features. So far so good. To start, I decided to use a simple case that I could easily check: a 3d vector. I also decided to copy some other routines as required to get going. For this reason I copied "scalar_plus". Now that I have written the short piece code, it doesn't quite get there. The obvious answer of "don't use the Intel compiler" will not suffice! Saying that, when I switched from the Intel compiler to bad old MSVC6 I had not problems. But our company's software requires the performance gain provided by the Intel compiler on Windows. Another issue, I saw that during installation of Boost, it is possible using STLPort and MSVC6 together, but (for the reasons mentioned above), why not STLPort with the Intel compiler? Hi I tried to run the tests for ublas with cwpro8 on Window 2000: D:\boost\boost_1_30_0\libs\numeric\ublas\test2>bjam -sTOOLS=cwpro8 The compiler (Codewarrior) has problems with the boost include files. Includes like #include <boost/numeric/ublas/io.hpp> work only with the system path and not with the user path. When I change <include>$(BOOST_ROOT) in the jamfile to <sysinclude>$(BOOST_ROOT) the problem disappears (but would possibly not work for other compilers). Benedikt

Policy based threading question

Dear Boosters! I am designing a class template with policy controled threading behaviour, like template<ThreadingModel=SingleThreaded> class Something; where there are different ThreadingModels available (see Modern C++ Design by Alexandrescu for a discussion of policies). I would like to have Something to inherit ThreadingModel. The idea is that SingleThreaded does not impose any additional penalties. So my Idea was to have something like class SingleThreaded { public: void lock() {} void release() {} } class MultiThreaded { public: void lock() { lock_mutex(m_mutex) } void release() { release_mutex(m_mutex) } private: mutex m_mutex; } and have all functions call lock() and release() accordingly. But this is not good, since it does not use Resource Initialization is Aquisition and leads to exeption safety problems and so on. Furthermore, it is not (because of these reasons) possible to model using boost::mutex ´es since they do not expose a lock() release() interface but can only be locked using scoped_locks. So another idea is to have something like class SingleThreaded { class scoped_lock { // Empty class } } class MultiThreaded { public: class scoped_lock { scoped_lock() // constructor that locks m_mutex of // of MultiThreaded ~scoped_lock() // unlocks } private: boost::mutex m_mutex; } and have the member functions lock the mutex by instantiating an embeded scoped_lock object. Now there are some questions I have: 1.) Does this approach sound sensible, or am I overlooking a commonly used Idiom to achieve this functionality 2.) How can I access the m_mutex member of the right object in scoped_lock()? The only way I can imagin is to give the this pointer to the constructor (like scoped_lock lock(this);). Also, I do not like to have the mutex member public, but if I make it private and write friend class scoped_lock; this does not have the desired effect (MSVC still complains about private data member access) Somehow, I must be getting something completely wrong, so if somebody could point me in the right direction, I would be thankful. So now I found out that any_cast does not promote types that may be promoted like for int->double conversions. I have a message queue class that has the following API: post( msg ); msg get(); where get( msg ) blocks until there is a message available and post( msg ) notifies when a message is posted. There are four threads waiting in get: MSG mqueue::get(); { MSG msgResult; { boost::mutex::scoped_lock lockQueue( _mutexQueue ); _conditionMessageReady.wait( lockQueue ); if ( _queueOut.size() > 0 ) { msgResult = _queueOut.front(); _queueOut.pop(); } } return msgResult; } The post method USED TO do this: void mqueue::post( MSG msg ) { { boost::mutex::scoped_lock lockQueue( _mutexQueue ); _queueOut.push(msg); } _conditionMessageReady.notify_one(); } When the queue was just a little bit busy (one thread processing, not all four), messages would go into the queue and never come out. I changed the .notify_one() to .notify_all() and I no longer have messages getting stuck in the queue. However, now I have a bunch of threads getting released when there is nothing for them to do (they just loop around and wait again, but YUCK!). Am I missing something or is this "expected" behavior? boost::thread and detaching

Hello. I have a very simple server, in which there is a loop that looks like while( (c_sock = accept(...)) != -1) { try { boost::thread thr( boost::bind(&ServerClass::client_connection, this, c_sock)); }catch ( const std::exception & e) { std::cout << "Exception " << e << std::endl; close(c_sock); } } Now, it used to look more like while( (c_sock = accept(...)) != -1) { pthread_t thr; pthread_attr_t attrs; pthread_attr_init(&attrs); pthread_attr_setdetachstate(&attrs, PTHREAD_CREATE_DETACHED); thr_data * data = new thr_data(this, c_sock); pthread_create(&thr, &attrs, thread_proxy_function, thr_data); } (Actually, the pthread specific stuff and thread parameter wrapping and all that that was done with wrappers written by me. Also, there was proper error checking and all.) Now, the older version worked without any problems. However, the newer version using boost::thread ceased to work after approximately 256 threads had been created *all of which had exited*, pthread_create reporting an error Memory allocation failed which was reported as a resource allocation error by boost::thread. It seems that this problem was caused by the fact that the thread function usually got to execute and finish *before* the temporary thread object was destroyed (boost::thread destructor calls pthread_detach). Apparently LinuxThreads didn't consider it prudent to release the resources allocated to the thread upon call of pthread_detach if the thread had exited but no one had joined it yet. Is my analysis credible? Am I doing something completely idiotic here? I managed to get my server code functioning by poking at the boost::thread code and making it create threads detached by default, but that's hardly a very elegant solution. Hi Andre, this is not only behavior of VC, all compilers, as far as I know have some include/lib paths preconfigured, to prevent you from specifying them always on command lines. You have two options how to use stlport: 1) #include <stlport/string> + STLport allows it and it does not clash with the VC STL and you can do also some benchmarks... ;-) - your code has hard-coded includes of STL headers and it is not easy to switch STL then 2) #include <string> + your includes look standard for any compiler/STL - your compiler must support replacing of its own ST with the alternative one (STLport) The 2) option you can achieve with VC by two ways: a) do not rely on the built-in header/lib paths and provide them always on the command line or environment (I'd recommend the latter...) - it is turned on by the switch /useenv (VC7) or /env (VC6) and then you have to provide your own paths e.g. in environment: INCLUDE=D:\STLport-4.5.3;D:\STLport-4.5.3\stlport;D:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET\Vc7\ATLMFC\INCLUDE;D:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET\Vc7\INCLUDE;D:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET\Vc7\PlatformSDK\include;D:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET\FrameworkSDK\include;D:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET\Vc7\PlatformSDK\include\prerelease LIB=D:\STLport-4.5.3\lib;D:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET\Vc7\LIB;D:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET\Vc7\ATLMFC\LIB;D:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET\Vc7\PlatformSDK\lib;D:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET\FrameworkSDK\lib;D:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET\Vc7\PlatformSDK\lib\prerelease b) modify the paths in the VC's configuration - see the menu Tools/Options Projects/VC++ Directories and put the path(s) to STLport into the three of them: Include (for compiler), Library (for linker), Source (for debugger - necessary only in VC6, VC7 uses absolute paths n PDBs) I personally prefer 2) a) because if I do not want to compile everything on my machine with STLport, it prevents me from still reconfiguring of VC system paths and I can set the variables simply in a build batch for devenv /build, and in a IDE-runing batch for tho work. Then I can easily test also more versions of STLport. I think you might be getting bit by the way wchar_t == unsigned short on MSVC, and when Intel uses MSVC compatibility. We've used Intel 6-7.1, with boost and STLPort for the last 9 months. I also make sure to use the latest Platform SDK. There were a few issues here and there, but things mostly went fine. Is your STLPort built with Intel or MSVC? Here are our instructions for building STLPort from our wiki: * edit stlport/stl_user_config,uncomment the macro _STLP_NEW_PLATFORM_SDK defined. * on the command line, go to the src subdirectory * run nmake -f intel50.mak clean all (make sure in your global include path that the SDK inlclude path comes before the VC98 path otherwise you will get build errors) * If successful, run nmake -f intel50.mak all install * In MSVC, go to tools/options/Directories, and make [path to msvc]/VC98/include/stlport the first entry in the list. After that: What command line options are you using? Are you using MSVC or Makefiles? I just went and looked at your errors again... It says std::. Er, Visual C++ is not alone in this behaviour. The compilers I'm familiar with all behave that way - the directories are searched in the order they are specified. When a match is found, the search stops. The same logic applies when using LIB to find libraries, PATH to find executables, and so on. Why should INCLUDE behave differently? Think about it - you have two different header files with the same name: the standard ones shipped with VC, and the StlPORT. How else would you expect the compiler to behave? Pick the last one it finds? Pick one at random? Spit out an error? -- Jim

boost::mutex::scoped_lock conventions

Is there a convention about whether or not to explicitly call .unlock()? In the case where everything to the end of the scope should be locked, there is no NEED to do it, but isn't it a bit sloppy to leave locks locked? Much like not using braces on one-line 'if' statements, it could cause maintenance problems later. What's the current thinking? Thanks, - Mark P.S. Ahem, could someone please answer my simple question: Is is possible to compile programs which use Boost and STLPort (instead of Microsoft Foundation Classes) with the Intel compiler, on Windows? I am getting all kinds of weird errors which relate to streaming operators, which makes me think that my usage of STLPort might be involved? On the other hand, if I use MSCV6 instead of Intel compiler (7.0) I do not get the same errors. It seems that some of our in-house software can't be compiled with MSVC6 because of problems this specific compiler has with templates. The same code compiles without problem on the latest GCC compilers. One other thing I should point out to you about building, or actually lack there of, inside MSVC. Intel doesn't know how to generate the PDB files themselves, so they call MSVC's cl to do it for them. This is a problem because if cl can't build the file, it doesn't generate any dependencies for it. If you use templates that MSVC can't handle, you'll probably want to switch to makefiles. We did. I get the following error when trying to use the filesystem library on MSVC 6.0 : error C2061: syntax error : identifier 'BOOST_DEDUCED_TYPENAME' The line causing the problem is in the \detail\iterator.hpp file: template <class T> type_traits::yes_type is_mutable_iterator_helper(T const*, BOOST_DEDUCED_TYPENAME T::value_type*); I have run a config Test and both BOOST_DEDUCED_TYPENAME and BOOST_NO_DEDUCED_TYPENAME are defined but have no value. Since MSVC 6.0 supports the 'typename' keyword I would think that the declaration above in the iterator.hpp file should use 'typename' rather than BOOST_DEDUCED_TYPENAME. dollar sign doesn't work in regular and format expressions

I am compiling a program that uses the boost RegEx library on an AS/400 native C compiler. When compiled with VC6 it runs fine, but when compiled with the AS/400 compiler, the dollar sign doesn't function in either the regular and format expressions. For example, when I try a regex_merge and I have a format expression something like this "Example $1 and $2", it will find the submatches, but not insert anything in for $1 and $2, it'll just be "Example and ". Also, in a regular expression when the dollar sign serves as a line anchor, it won't match when it should. Both usages of the dollar sign run fine when compiled on the PC. Everything else, so far, seems to be working okay on the AS/400. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Doug

I am having some problems with boost::signals version 1_30_0 on XP, compiled and linked using VC6. I am building a timer mechanism, similar to that with Qt. A user instanciates a timer with some millisecond value, starts the timer via t.Start(), and then enters the event loop (or in most cases, returns from a function call by the event loop). Borland 5 and indirect_iterator

Hi all, Using Borland C++Builder5 (which has bcc32 5.5.1) I've attempted the tests for indirect_iterator which compile fine. However, the following fails: list< shared_ptr< int > > ctr; void foo( int x ) { } for_each( make_indirect_iterator( ctr.begin() ), make_indirect_iterator( ctr.end() ), foo ); with the first error being: [C++ Error] iterator.h(125): E2404 Dependent type qualifier 'shared_ptr<int>' has no member type named 'difference_type' which then causes a failure to instantiate the iterator_traits. I'm no template guru, so I can make the full error list available if required. Anyone know what's going on? I've been using free file-scoped functions up to now because I really don't understand what a boost::function0<void>& is. I get, I think, that it can't be a member function, because there is no 'this' attached. Using time_duration::rep_type::ticks_per_second

I have written a function to convert a posix_time::ptime to a windows FILETIME (which is in essence a 64-bit value counting 100-nanosecond intervals since Jan 01, 1601). In order to do so, I do a time difference between the ptime and a time setup to the FILETIME reference time. To convert from this time_duration to the FILETIME count, I use time_duration::rep_type::ticks_per_second. Since this does not seem to be documented I just wanted to make sure I was using it correctly (or if I should be using it at all). more ublas test problems

When compling the bench* tests for ublas using the jamfiles, both cwpro8 and borland do not seem to know about the function rand(). I think that <stdlib.h> should be included somewhere. MSVC seems to do this implicitely. Furthermore, only debug versions are generated for all tests (test* and bench*). Benedikt

strange behaviour at setup on windows2000

I had the following trouble setting up boost 1.29.0 on windows 2000 (using vc7, but that's not the point) the first thing bjam did (the version downloaded from sourceforge) was to erase all the files and folders in tools\ so that no build could be performed... setting those files to read-only was enough but that's an unexpected behaviour. lambda library: how to use io manipulators?

The following compiles: (cout << _1 << "\n")(x); but this doesn't: (cout << _1 << endl)(x); (gcc 3.2.2) I can't figure out how to use an io manipulator within a lambda function. Firstly, how do I do it? (e.g. suppose I want to use flush, for which there is no workaround like using "\n"). Secondly, a suggestion: it would be nice if support was built in for the io manipulators. - Chuck

Hi, The following code: const bool isWS = ::boost::is_base_and_derived<std::wstring,std::wstring>::value; sets isWS false with VS.NET 2003 (_MSC_VER=1310) in version 1.30.0 of the libraries. shared_from_this from a destructor

Please forgive the double posting, but I am still unfamiliar with the community...) version: boost 1.30.0 library: smart pointers I am using the boost::enable_shared_from_this base class from the smart pointer library to implement shared_from_this in my classes. I was amazed to find this class, after hours of thashing trying even to figure out the very problem it solves. So, first off, thanks to the boosters. My problem is that shared_from_this() throws boost::bad_weak_ptr if called from my class's destructor. Is this a design decision? a bug? am I misreading a class requirement? The problem (if it is one...) is that sp_counted_base::release() decrements use_count_ before calling dispose(). Then when my class calls shared_from_this from its destructor (via dispose()), sp_counted_base::add_ref fails (use_count == 0) and throws boost::bad_weak_ptr. I would suggest either setting use_count_ after dispose(), or clarifying in the docs that shared_from_this can't be called from a destructor. (... which would send me back to the drawing board to solve my problem) It would also be handy to have an exception less version of share_from_this which justs returns a null shared_ptr. ? Using std::max_element() on a multi_array

I'm looking for advice on using std::max_element() with boost::multi_array. When passing a multi_array to max_element() I was expecting to get an iterator referring to the largest element in return. However my compiler tells me the iterator refers to a sub_array<class RAClass::RAPoint,1> instead, and I don't know why or what to do about it. Its clear that inexperience with multi_array and max_element() is the cause. Is anyone able to shed some light on the subject? BGL - misc problems encountered

I've been testing out the BGL, and have found some small problems. Is this a good forum to post these? If not, please set me straight. I have in mind to post more of these -- in the interest of helping iron out the library. Maybe the developer list would be more appropriate? Or a BGL-specific list, if one exists...? Question regarding boolalpha and lexical_cast for 1.30.0

Hello, I'm trying to get lexical_cast to convert a std::string to bool; I realize that this is done with normal IOStreams by using boolalpha. Is there a way to do this with lexical_cast? I saw some old posts in the archives and they were apparently with older code bases because I was unable to get their code snippets to work properly [either that or my compiler is messed up :)]. For reference, I use Visual Studio .NET 2002. Thank you very much for any assistance in advance. --Paul

Inconsistent regexp matching when using quantifiers?

Hi all, I'm using regexp from boost-1.28 and experience the following behavior. Consider the following (somewhat artificial) regexp pattern: a{1}b As I expected, that pattern is found in "ab" but not "aab". To my suprise however, the same pattern *is* found in "aaab", "aaaaab", and any other string consisting of an odd number of "a"s followed by a "b". It is not found in strings consisting of an even number of "a"s followed by a "b". This seems odd (no pun intended). I see the same sort of behavior with quantifiers other than "{1}" and where the quantified expression matches other single characters. (Oddly enough, the behavior changes when using a quantified expression that matches multiple characters. "(ab){1}c" is found in "abc", "ababc", "abababc", and any other string containing "abc".) FWIW, I first observed the behavior when trying to find social security numbers with the following pattern: \d{3}-\d{2}-\d{4} As expected, that pattern was found in "123-12-1234" but not in "1234- 12-1234". However it *was* found in "1234567-12-1234". Is this behavior by design or is it a bug? If it's a bug, has it been fixed in a subsequent boost release? Also what is the correct behavior? Should "a{1}b" be found in "aab" (albeit starting at the second character)? FWIW, it's easy enough for me to workaround the current behavior with a pattern like this: (^|[^a])a{1}b Thanks, --Dean

find_if and calling a member function

I have an object that has a member get_name which returns a string. I have a collection of these objects and would like to find one with a particular name. I am currently using find_if, equal and bind find_if(objects.begin(), objects.end(), bind(equal_to<string>(), name, bind(&object::get_name, _1))); Given Lambda doesn't compile under BCB6, is there an easier way to do this rather than having to make up 2 bind statements?
