Hi, If I have a vector of strings vector<string> v; v.push_back("One"); v.push_back("Two"); v.push_back("Three"); v.push_back("Four"); v.push_back("Five"); and define arithmetic action plus like this: namespace boost { namespace lambda { struct plain_return_type_2<arithmetic_action<plus_action>, std::string, std::string> { typedef std::string type; }; } } then the following code works just fine: cout << accumulate(v.begin()+1, v.end(), v.front(), _1 + string(", ") + _2) << endl; and the following also works wonderfully: int i = 1; cout << accumulate(v.begin()+1, v.end(), v.front(), _1 + bind(constructor<string>(), var(i)++, ' ') + _2) << endl; Now, if I want to use if_then_else_return as shown below, it fails miserably, producing a huge error message: cout << accumulate(v.begin(), v.end(), string(), if_then_else_return(_1 == string(), _1, _1 + bind(constructor<string>(), var(i)++, ' ') + _2)) << endl; Now for the questions: What is the proper way to use if_then_else_return? Why do I need to define a separate arithmetic action for strings, even though they are a common library type? Short question: As the Subject says, given a boost::function{1..N}<>, how can I extract a tuple of all its arguments? Long question: Anyway, what I'm really trying to do is this: Given some classes with different methods: struct X { void f(int n ) ; } ; struct Y { void g(char c, double d ) ; } ; I want to easly create _polymorphic_ closures binding member functions of X /Y with instances of X/Y and function arguments. The goal is the have a deferred 'action' list for easy backtracing of an algorithm. That is, instead of directly calling: X x ; Y y ; x.f(1); y.g('a',1.2); I want to do something that would look like: X x; Y y; ActionList actions; actions.push_back( make_closure(&X::f, x,1) ); actions.push_back( make_closure(&Y::g, y,'a',1.2) ); std::for_each(actions.begin(),actions.end(),execute_action()); TIA Fernando Cacciola

filesystem compilation on tru64 unix

Hi all, I have been trying to build the filesystem library for one of our alpha servers running tru64 unix. I have managed to compile bjam using the tru64cxx toolset. Then, I went into the filesystem build directory and ran the following, but it has been hanging for over 30 minutes now on the last command you see below. Can anyone help? It could just be our machines, but I am at a loss. Does anyone have any ideas? Any help would be appreciated! cvs checkout probs

Hi, I have just tried to checkout the boost cvs tree from sourceforge, but get stuck at cvs server: Updating boost/libs/numeric/mtl/test cvs server: [05:07:19] waiting for anoncvs_boost's lock in /cvsroot/boost/boost/libs/numeric/mtl/test I can subsequently check out the remaining stuff with $ cat tmp pool preprocessor property_map python random rational regex signals smart_ptr spirit static_assert test thread timer tokenizer tuple type_traits utility $ for dir in `cat tmp`; do cvs -z3 co boost/libs/$dir; done so it appears that the problem is specific to the boost/libs/numeric/mtl/test directory. [boost] filesystem lib & linking (MSVC.NET)

Hi All, I'm trying to use the filesystem lib, but I'm having some problems figuring out how to build it properly. I'm using MSVC.NET on WindowsXP, and I ran the bjam tool like in the docs for the whole set of libraries. It took me a while to figure out where it had put everything, and finally found a file called libboost_filesystem.lib. I copied it to a convenient location, added the library path and lib file to my project settings, and then tried to link my app. MSVC then gave a bunch of linker errors, and suggested to add MSVCRT to the nodefaultlib setting, so I did that, and got less linker errors. All that is left is some thing to do with exception & string classes. Linker errors are all about multiply defined symbols. I suppose I'm doing something wrong somewhere along the line, but not sure what. I can't tell if bjam is actually doing what it's supposed to, and the documentation around the place can be pretty sparse in places, so I hope someone can point out what I can do to get things working. prim_minimum_spanning_tree crashes

Trying to use the prim_minimum_spanning_tree function it crashes in dijkstra_dispatch1 by trying to delete the local variable std::vector<D> distance_map(n). Is there something missing in my code which leads to that crash? It works for the root graph but not for any new created subgraph. Help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance Stephan

How to avoid warning C4275 in MSVC 7.1

Hello, when I build /libs/thread/examples/thread.cpp, I got warning C4275. I think it is because std::logic_error is not defined as dllexport/dllimport. Can anyone tell me how to correct this? TIA.

Hi, I'm having trouble linking code that uses adjacency_list_io.hpp. If the header is included is included in more than one compilation unit, I get "multiple definition of function" errors for the non-template functions in adjacency_list_io.hpp: std::istream& operator >> ( std::istream& in, no_property& ) and void getSubset( no_property& p, const no_property& s ) I'm sure that there is some C+ subtlety that I'm missing here, but I'm not familiar enough with the library to understand what it is. Shouldn't non-template function code be in a .cpp file to keep this sort of thing from happening? - Solomon

shared_ptr Intellisense

Hello, Has anyone been able to get IntelliSense member information for the boost::shared_ptr class? I am using Visual Studio.NET 2003. I have setup the boost directory as a subfolder of my project directory. Moreover, I *am* able to obtain Intellisense information for boost::any, any_cast, get_pointer, make_permuation_iterator, permutation_iterator_generator, permutation_iterator_policies, scoped_ptr, signal, and swap. The fact that scoped_ptr works fine makes me wonder why shared_ptr doesn't work. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks, Jeff

A Quick Question about Threads

Hi All I'm planning on replacing all our (Win32 API Wrapped) threads with the boost threads. I was looking at the thread class interface and there isn't a method to ask if the thread is still running. This is something we use quite a lot in out current wrapper. To get around this I was thinking of using a member variable in the function object that is passed to the thread constructor to indicated whether the thread had finished. Is there a better way? I've not had a really good look at the docs yet, but there doesn't appear to be a Critical Section class. Graph Library: Ordered Vertex List?

Hi Guys, I would like to use an ordered vertex list (ie based on property type) in an implementation that I am working on such that duplication can be avoided. I have read and understand how to implement an ordered edge list thanks to the previous posts but am finding it hard to get started! Perhaps I have missed the key example? It appears that from the way config::VertList is constructed that it may be a similar process in nature? adj_list_impl::add_vertex appears to discard the boolean return value from the associative insertion. Would such a construction allow me to avoid the duplication I seek to avoid? I am guessing so, but some advice would give me a confidence "boost". ( <-- It's a lame pun: I really do need help ;-) ) My first steps are below rehashing the excellent ordered edges example with a simple search/replace and maching my target container base. I'll keep plugging along with it anyway and it may just compile one day. Suggestions/Ideas/Refs/Ptrs are appreciated. Compile time Problem with boost::type_traits library

Hello, I am trying to use the boost::function library which in turn includes many of the headers from other boost libraries. I am using g++ 3.2 with: g++ -c -g -fwritable-strings -Wno-deprecated -static -ansi -pedantic -DANSI_HEADERS -D_G_HAVE_BOOL as the options. The file is_integral.hpp and the file is_convertible.hpp in the type_traits library contain the declarations of the type long long which the ISO C++ seemingly doesn't accept. The compiler gives the warning: ISO C++ does not support `long long' . I don't think there is a new version of this on boost. I downloaded the boost lib sometime in June Version 1.30.0. Can this problem be because of any of the compiler options that I am using? thanking you, regards, amit.

FC++ in Boost, Spirit, Preprocessing

Hello, I want to write in favor of Boostifying the functional library FC++, which I find very useful. Would a merger with the Phoenix library from Spirit (already in Boost) be feasible? Phoenix seems to have a slightly nicer syntax but lacks (as far as I know) the Haskell prelude functions and lazy list implementation, also the closures do not seem very intuitive to me. My main concern with both FC++ and Phoenix is that when defining new functiods, the user needs to write a lot of often repetitive code. This could be simplified using a suitable preprocessor. Would that be acceptable and are there other people interested ? Hi, I am trying to use Spirit (in the latest Boost 1_30_0) for a project. I want to parse a file whose structure is the following: section1 { something; } I am using the file_iterator to iterate on the input file and then define comment as well as the grammar. I am at my wits end why my parser keeps failing. (When this simple grammar works, I want to make the parser more complex.) My code is attached below. (Note: I used the example in the distribution c_grammar.cpp as the starting point for it.) Newbie: Way to convert "pointer-to-member-function" to a "pointer-to-function".

Hello All!, I am trying to figure out a way of converting "pointer-to-member-function" to a "pointer-to-function" so that I can pass it as a callback function pointer to constructor of some third party class. I know there is NO direct way of doing this in c++. I am further constrained because of the following facts: 1. The fact that I am using a third party class for whose constructor I need to pass pointers to functions having some specific signature. 2. I don't want to be using static declaration for the method that I wish to pass to the third party constructor as a callback function(due to the fact that static methods can access only access static data members). So if I am not mistaken, then, I suppose, that boost function library might be of help in here by somehow using some elegant tricks' to do this task. (There is the fact also that every instance of my class has lot of data which is different and I need access to the data for the method that I wish to pass). Am I right, or am I looking at the wrong place? If I am indeed looking at the wrong place then where will it be best to look for it. I remember some notes on binding in the documentation of the boost function library though. Thanks in advance, regards, amit.

filesystem::path & wide char strings?

Hello, I want to use the filesystem::path class for a project I'm working on, but I need to support wide character strings in the path names. I might be missing something, but it seems that path only supports std::string. Is this because of a portability issue or what is the rationale for not using something like basic_string<CharType>? Boost Bind on MSVC 7.1

The following example is a very simple, and contrived, example that demonstrates the problem I'm seeing. This fails to compile with 'term does not evaluate to a function taking 1 arguments'. Deferred Function Forwarding

I am looking for pointers on how to use boost to implement a set of template classes/helper functions which can be used for deferred function/method call forwarding. Here's an example of illustrating what I wish to accomplish. I can live with restictions on the function argument types. //Define a template type which can capture arguments of any (or most) functions. I believe boost tuple could suit my requirements. //Define a template helper function save_args which constructs a arguments tuple based on the signature of the function passed as the first argument. e.g . R f(T1, T2, T3); boost:tuple<R, T1, T2, T3> args = save_args(f, t1, t2, t3); //Don't want to explicitly specify types like save_args<R,T1,T2,T3> (t1,t2,t3) //Define another template helper function call_with_args which given another function "g" with a signature conforming with "f" and the argument tuple invokes "g" e.g. R g(T1, T2, T3) //This should call g(args.get<0>, args.get<1>, args.get<2>) call_with_args(g, args); Could someone provide ideas, pointers/sample code for implementing save_args, call_with_args helper template functions. Feature Suggestion

Hello guys, I have just been introduced to the library by some people at Efnet's #c++ and I have to say there is quite a lot of useful work in there. I hope boost makes it into the standard. It's about time to get a feature rich std library. Want I wanted to ask you is to provide a few more functions in library interval. I was comparing boost with blitz++ as the parts I need at the moment are mainly of scientific nature. Anyways, I found boost more to my likeness because it has other features I might want to use later, because it supports more compilers and lastly because it's API is better organised in my opinion. The functions that I find that are missing from library 'interval' are the ones listed here: http://www.oonumerics.org/blitz/manual/blitz03.html#l77 Is there any chance you could implement them in boost? I need a microsec_clock on Windows XP. My first impulse is to define gettimeofday() implemented using ftime(). Should this work ok or am I missing something obvious? TIA

Newbie - stack overflow in connected components

Hello: Environment: Windows 2K, MSVC 6 SP5, Boost 1.30.0 I'm new to BGL ( 2 days experience ) and am trying to use the connected components graph. My implementation seems to be OK for my small test case ( 10 verticies) but when I run my "real data" through it ( 15000 verticies) I get a stack overflow error. I note that there is a patch in the sourceforge CVS for the dfs algoritm which implements a non-recursive solution from dgregor that I understand will avoid the stack overflow. I naively downloaded the "depth_first_search.hpp" V1.35 from the CVS and of course it doesn't compile. The question: "How can I apply the patch to fix the stack problem( ie how to determine what and where are the other files I need or do I download the entire current version ( ie tag MAIN)?" link problems with precompiled headers and boost libs?

Hi, I'm using the datetime library of boost 1_30_0 with VC7.1 with precompiled headers on. We're getting the following link warnings/errors: om.lib(bg_extra.obj) : warning LNK4006: ___@@_PchSym_@00@UwvevolknvmgUtnkEPozhgUhlfixvUytPzwwOlyq@ already defined in om.lib(bg_init.obj); second definition ignored om.lib(bg_extra.obj) : error LNK2005: ___@@_PchSym_@00@UwvevolknvmgUtnkEPozhgUhlfixvUytPzwwOlyq@ already defined in om.lib(bg_init.obj) We include boost headers in our own header files. Our own headerfiles are then used to create a precompiled header. It seems that all object files that use the precompiled header get these link errors... Does anyone know the reason/ a solution for this error? Thanks a lot!

I've been reading through posts on here and in the docs but I think I may have missed something. Heres what I am trying to do: lets say I have a class Foo* and I'm trying to use it in a std::vector<shared_ptr<Foo> >. I can add them all day long and it works fine. The problem is that when I try to remove the shared_ptr from the vector. I expected it to delete the memory for the Foo* then delete itself (to completely free the memory that the shared_ptr used and the memory that the Foo was using. I think this is not happening though since the destructor is not being called when the elements are removed from the vector. Building Thread Tests on Red Hat 9.0

Hi All I'm trying the boost threading library for the first time. I've successfully built the threading library itself and now I want to build the tests. I've followed the instructions, but the build seems to hang at this point: execute-test ../../../libs/thread/test/bin/test_once.test/gcc/debug/runtime-link-dynamic/threading-multi/test_once.run Is this normal? I've left it for a few minutes to see if I was just being impatient, but it doesn't continue. Also, I've been looking for some code examples in the documentation on the website, I seem to remember there being some when I looked at potentially using the threads on Windows about 18 months ago, but I can't find them now. Newbie: boost::filesystem::fstream base class undefined error

I am using VC++6 SP5, STLPort 4.5.3, boost 1.30.0. I am tring to use boost::filesystem::fstream objects in conjuction with boost::filesystem::path objects. When I create an ifstream object, the compiler gives the following message: error C2504: 'basic_ifstream<char,class _STL::char_traits<char> >' : base class undefined. Above error takes me to ln 47 in fstream.hpp. Similar problem with ofstream. Any suggestions? Thanks, Aaron Laws

Need help with BOOST unit test framework!

hi, Essentially what I'm trying to do(the code is attached below) , is pass a base class member pointer (member function should automatically be visible in the derived class) , to the BOOST framework. However, since the member function is statically not visible in the derived class, a compile time error is generated . I'm *thinking* that some kind of casting operation is required but not very sure how! could anybody enlighten me as to how to get the code snippet below running? Thanks! using the signals lib

Hello all, I'm sorry if this is a faq (it almost has to be) but I couldn't find anything in the signals documentation nor in the general build instruction. I've build the signals library using jam as described in the build instructions, I've added the resulting library to my linker list but then I get the errors below about several symbols being multiply defined. I'm using MSVC 7.0 (Visual Studio .Net, not .Net 2003). What do I do wrong? [uBLAS] Constructing from std::vector

Hi, I'm starting to play with the uBLAS library. So far so good... I'd like to be able to construct a ublas::vector from a std::vector. I can't seem to find how to do this. Do I have to go through std::copy or something equivalent or is there a constructor I've missed? If it doesn't exist, is there a reason why not? Perhaps there are some holes in my understanding. Binary compatibility of boost dll files

I see that several boost libraries can be compiled as dll files. I'd like to know if there's any concern about binary compatilibity between different versions of those dll's as boost's version number (and possibly the library itself) changes. For instance, whenever MFC's dll binary interface changes, we have another library version written in it's name (MFC42.dll, MFC70.dll, MFC71.dll...), this way we can help avoiding "dll hell". It would be also cool to link a version resource in each dll. This way, installers would check if a newer dll exists in the system, avoiding overwriting with an older one. And one last thing... the import library of date_time's dll isn't being generated, making it unusable. It's better to delete the dll target of its jamfile. If any help of my part is needed, I'd be glad to help. regards, rod

Random Number Generation

I've got three questions/comments regarding the Random Number Library: Question (1) --------------------------------------------------------- How about including a facility for generating "antithetic random variates"? (Do a google search if the term is unfamiliar). A partial implementation might be something like the following, (I haven't tried compiling this, so please pardon any syntax errors...): template< class URNG > // Uniform Random Number Generator class antithetic { private: URNG urng; public: explicit antithetic( s ) { urng.seed(s); } // Perhaps not quite right (see question (2) below) typename URNG::result_type operator()() { return URNG::max_value - urng(); } }; Then one would be able to construct two antithetic variates (rng1 & rng2) as follows: mt19937 rng1(seed); antithetic<mt19937> rng2(seed); Question (2) -------------------------------------------------------- Regarding the "uniform_01" generator (and a possible bug in "uniform_in_sphere"). The interval generated by uniform_01 is designed to be the "half-open" interval [0,1). The asymmetry seems unnecessary. How about using the open interval (0,1). I can appreciate that perhaps efficiency is the reason for using the interval [0,1) if one is generating the random floating point numbers by setting the mantissa with a random bit stream. But, consider the following advantage to using (0,1): You would avoid a possible zerodivide in the "uniform_in_sphere" class. Here's my reasoning: Using the current "uniform_01" generator with the half open interval [0,1) the normal_distribution::operator() can return zero. Using my proposed "uniform_01" generator with the open interval (1,1) the normal_distribution::operator() will never return exactly zero. The "zero" return from normal_distribution::operator() could conceivably cause a zerodivide in "uniform_in_sphere". Question (3) -------------------------------------------------------- How about having a boost random number generator whose output would match that of Matlab's random number generator (both uniform and gaussian)? Is there a boost_date_time dll?

Development environment is .NET 2003 (i.e., VC7.1). I'm reasonably sure there were no errors when I built boost_1_30_0. \boost_1_30_0\libs\date_time\build\bin\boost_date_time.dll certainly exists - but it's a directory that contains a subdirectory (. \vc7\debug\runtime-link-dynamic) that contains a .CMD, .pdb and two .obj files. As the old saying goes: "I can see fine - I just don't understand what I'm looking at." I'm clearly having a "senior moment" but honestly: I searched boost.org, google.com and [even] altavista.com/web/adv. Any pointers to get me back on the right track would be appreciated.

weak_ptr

Is there a reason why weak_ptr's cannot be compared with ==, or tested in a conditional? If I have two weak_ptr's, I thought it to be strange that I have to do: (w1.lock() == w2.lock()) And to test if a weak_ptr is the empty weak_ptr: if ( !(w1.lock()) ) which seems kind of awkward. Looking at the implementation, I see how the copy constructor is defined using lock. I understand what the comments are saying there. Perhaps there are some multithreaded issues that prevent equality testing I don't see. I would like the semantics that w1 and w2 compare to be equal whether or not the object they are pointing to are valid or not. I'm not sure if weak_ptrs become "empty" when the object they point to is destroyed (because there's no way to test for "emptyness" or "nullness" of a weak_ptr), but if they do I can see how the equality test can't work, but not the conditional test. Even so, why is there not an operator == provided that locks both weak_ptr? Is it acceptable (the documentation didn't make it clear to me), to use if ( w1.expired() ) to test if simply if w1 is "null" or "reset". What I am trying to do is have a "current" pointer that takes the value of something I want to be set (or note the fact that nothing is set), but I don't care if the object dies while that pointer is set -- in fact I don't want to keep it alive because I don't have an easy way to call reset on current were I to make it a shared_ptr. However, this problem cropped up when I was trying to use the date-time library in conjuction with the Spirit parsing library. Spirit implements some function by doing exactly what I did in the above sample-- using a using directive and then calling ispunct() unqualified. I am guessing the ratonale behind this might have something to do with the fact that under MSVC6, functions like ispunct() (and most or all of <ccytpe>) seem to have been dumped into the global namespace by default. However, it seems like the date-time library must be doing something like: namespace std { using ::ispunct; } somewhere in its internals (or maybe just using something else that does?). Anyway, it seems to be a shame that I can't get these two great libraries to work together on my compiler. Is there any chance that someone out there might have a solution? boost::date_time + setting system clock

afternoon all, I was wondering if it is possible to set the clock using date_time. I been looking but have found no clue that it is so. From what I have seen so far, this library does a lot of cool stuff, and why not this. I am working on a little personal project that uses an ORB. The idea is to have all clocks synchronized. I have one machine that queries an atomic time server. After having done so it will call each machine and synchronize them. I am currently running a mix of Linux, Solaris, WIN NT 2000 and XP... and it freaks me out not to have them synchronized. Any help would be appreciated... Eric

shared_ptr or weak_ptr in general

I just wanted to follow up on my previous thread about my issues I've been discussing on the list with a general question. By default should I try to use shared_ptr or weak_ptr? I had always thought that shared_ptr should always be used except for rare cases where weak_ptr's semantics is either very desirable or needed. Now my pointers experience so far has been limited to explicit memory management (new/delete) and in Java with its references, where any reference keeps an object alive, and weak references exist but I've never used them despite a few years of using Java on the job. Based on some of the discussion (particularly from Mr Dimov), made me think that weak_ptr may be desirable a lot more often than I previously thought. I know that shared_ptr, unlike Java, is suceptable to cycles. And I feel that shared_ptr is better and less bug prone than new/delete but I'm afraid I'll have cycle problems if I just start throwing shared_ptr all over the place. I know that in my code I have back pointers all over the place, which I thought was pretty common, but I have realized that that only occurs when I'm following the generator/listener design scheme, and I've gotten that figured out. So A to B, B to A cycles don't concern me much but I do wonder about long cycles if I use shared_ptr a lot. The rule of thumb I'm using right now is to look for cycles if I "convert" a class to use shared_ptr (static crate method) that contains shared_ptr objects, similar to the rule I use to check for deadlocks with mutexes. But with all of these rules checking for safety I begin to question somewhat the benefits of shared_ptr over normal pointers. I suppose with shared_ptr you can only leak memory whereas with normal pointers you can do lots of nasty uninitialized accesses. I can see an argument that using shared_ptr only when needed and weak_ptr otherwise can help prevent cycles. But using weak_ptr requires the code to handle both cases of the lock operation, and I'm still unsure about any performance issues with lock if there is a mutex involved -- although too slight to not choose weak_ptr, it is enough to ask why not choose shared_ptr over weak_ptr if they both work equally well. staticially linked STLport and Boost

I've compiled STLport for vc6, and can compile Boost with this: bjam "-sTOOLS=msvc-stlport" "-sBUILD=debug <stlport-iostream>on" So far so good, but when I try to compile a simple Boost.Python example (why I got Boost) I get a heap of link errors because Boost has linked with the DLL version of STLport, and I want it statically linked. I thought it's meant to default to static, but I can only guess that STLport is detecting otherwise. STLport does define it's own bad_alloc, but it also #defines std to _STL so there should be no 'std'. When I use bad_alloc in my own programs I don't have any problems, so I can only assume it's Boost. I've wasted so much time trying to work this out, but I don't know much about the Boost build process. What's going wrong?

Unusal regex behavior.

Hellos everyone! Here is a good one. I am using regex and am having some weird returns. I can assign my results to a std:vector <std:string>. The vector[0] does contain the correct match, but vector[1] does not contain what is in a set of parentheses as it should. In fact I usually get a segment fault when I try to access it. I then found I can access results from the grep by using the boost::Regex.What(n). However What(0) returns the next available match in the string, and What(1) and up will correctly report the substrings defined in this second match correctly. If no second match is available then the What() member will return the original match. How do I fix the vector problem? OR? Does using What() force another search to take place? And if so can I change that behavior? Multiple inheritance and enable_shared_from_this

Can you multiply inherit from objects that inherit from enable_shared_from_this? It seems not. My program compiled on MSVC.NET "crashes" due to shared_from_this throwing boost::bad_weak_ptr. Originally when I started using shared_ptr I wanted to have an ability to obtain a shared_ptr to this since my objects sometimes register themselves. The way I do it now is like this: static sptr create() { sptr ret( new Object() ); ret->setThisPtr( ret ); return ret; } However it is very easy to forget which classes you inherit from that force you to call setThisPtr. A good use of the assert statement helps but I'd rather not do this. The problem is that I use multiple inheritance in one place: static sptr create() { sptr ret( new ComplexObject() ); ret->BaseA::setThisPtr( ret ); ret->BaseB::setThisPtr( ret ); return ret; } I thought I'd use enable_shared_from_this but as I said it crashes. StlPort-4.5.3, ublas and MSVC 6.0 problem

Although I found on the site that UBLAS supportes MSVC 6.0 with STLPort I couldn't compile any example with this configuration. It seems that using Boost ublas library with StlPort (with native MS streams) and MSVC 6.0 have some problems and require specific settings. Does anyone have any hint how this problem can be solved? Using gcc 3.2 (on MinGW) the template parameter defaults for indirect_iterator_generator don't work with shared_ptr. This has been discussed* on the list before, but there doesn't seem to have been a user-friendly resolution to the issues involved (at least not in release 1_30_0). Hello everyone, I am new to this list and a little new to Boost. I have a question on program design when using the excellent boost shared pointer's library. I am converting my old network library that uses explicit memory management to use shared_ptr where appropriate. So far this has gone well but I am having problem with cycles. This post is more of request for comments on my thought process, and if there is a "traditional" or better way of handling these issues. The question in general is "How to deal with the cycles that come about from event generator/listener designs?" The problem in more specific terms with my thinking follows. I'm having a problem with trying to mitigate reference cycles in a event generator/event listener paradigm. One creates a listener object, and registers itself as a listener of that object. As a result of the event, it may want to invoke methods of that object, so it contains a reference to that object. So Generator contains a reference to Listener, and Listener contains a reference to Generator. This is a problem with reference counted pointers. People tell me that cycles in general signify a flaw, so perhaps my fundamental design is indeed flawed. A real example from my library is a Connection object representing a network connection. Library user derives a new class implementing the ConnectionListener interface and registers it with Connection. When a packet arrives an event in the listener is invoked, and let's say the listener wants to process the packet and send a packet in response. It does this by passing a packet to the Connection. Thus the Connection refers to the listener, and the listener refers to the Connection (to send a packet). There are some possible solutions. One way to break cycles is to use weak references. In this way you can observe an object without preventing it from being collected. In the general case, cycles are very bad because you aren't sure which object can be deleted when. However in this case the relationship is simple. Generator can only generate events when it is alive, and Listener will only try to interact with Generator as a response to its event (so we know Generator is alive if we got its event). One could use a weak pointer in the Generator to the Listener, but then the Listener may die as soon as it is registered. The Listener can use a weak pointer to the Generator, and this seems intuitive since the Listener is merely an observer, but accessing a weak pointer safely in a multithreaded environment is expensive (I think so?) when we are positive it exists. The issue is compounded in my library since Generator is an object that I have written (therefore I can trust it to understand all of my "choices"), while the Listener is defined by the user. So I prefer to make the task as easy as possible on the user -- so I want to allow the user to use weak or strong references if possible so he doesn't have to worry about cycles. If I must impose a restriction along the lines of "you can have a pointer to object type x", I will, but I much prefer to not have restrictions like that. One way I've been considering (and have implemented some already) is to have the Generator release all its Listeners when it is done generating events. This works, but in my old API I have ways to retrieve the set listener, and this cannot work since the set listener may go to NULL at any time (as a weak pointer). So my best option for now seems to be to break my old API by allowing the user to set listeners and objects but not be able to retrieve them back (or allow retrieve function knowing that an empty shared_ptr may be returned). Another possible way is for the Generator always to pass a reference to itself in the event. This is possible and clean and very fast, but requires major changes to my API, but the prior way of disallowing gets is safe in that it allows the user to not have to think twice about keeping a reference to my object. I have more ideas but this post is getting long. If you have comments about how something like this using shared_ptr is typically designed, or comments related to my more specific problem, I would be grateful. Thanks in advance, Jason Winnebeck

The STL was provided by a third party, Dinkumware, which for a few years was unable to provide updates to Microsoft due to legal difficulties between Dinkumware and another party. regex RegEx::Grep on Windows [callback problems with bind1st(mem_fun(callback))]

I'm trying to use RegEx::Grep(GrepCallback cb, ...) on Windows with VC6. It works great with one exception. I really need the callback to be a method so that I can update attributes in my instance. I've tried about 10 ways and can't get anywhere - VC6 keeps sending back errors. Some of the errors are obvious and some - well, aren't templates wonderful whe it comes to error msgs?!@#$% I'm using MS stl and the example in the docs to get a generic function pointer doesn't work. This is the example in the regex docs: std::bind1st(std::mem_fun(&MyClass::callback), this) Then I tried: boost::bind(&MyClass::callback, this, _1) This simply produces a type that refuses to match GrepCallback. I wish the RegEx code just overloaded RegEx::Grep() to support this. (Is it more crossplatform and the STL way to do things?) I tried several other things including direct casts to GerpCallback, but I'm stuck. Any help in this area would be great. Thanks, Eric

Standardization of build

Hi, I noticed that the build of some projects (filesystem, date_time, signals) differs from the build of the thread, regex and python libraries in that they they do not include a bin-stage and that debug and release versions have the same name. It would be nice if this could be standardized somehow (especially that debug and release versions should have different names). /Johannes

libbgl-viz.a instead of libbglviz.a

Hi, I'm quite new at using boost (downloaded 1.30.0 a couple of days ago). I noticed that when I wanted to make libbglviz.a, as described in http://www.boost.org/libs/graph/doc/read-graphviz.html, there was already a makefile. "make libbglviz.a" does not work, but "make libbgl-viz.a" will. A second documentation error is in http://www.boost.org/libs/property_map/property_map.html, where the example is not equal to the actual cpp file. generic_foo_algorithm is on this page, but the file just mentions foo. I think it is a glitch in the doc, but if different... Comments?, David NL

Using date_time::microsec_clock in windows ?

Hi, I would like to know why we can't use the microsec_clock in a windows env. I know there is no gettimeofday function, but there is certainly a viable workaround. Why it isn't in boost yet, is it planned ? How do you guys suggest to emulate the microsec_clock on a Windows compilation ? Thanks. Jérôme

I just experienced an assertion failure using the boost::minstd_rand generator: /home/packages/boost_1_29_0/boost/random/uniform_int.hpp:50: boost::uniform_int<UniformRandomNumberGenerator, IntType>::uniform_int (UniformRandomNumberGenerator &, IntType, IntType) [with UniformRandomNumberGenerator = boost::random::linear_congruential<int32_t, 48271, 0, 2147483647, 399268537>, IntType = int]: Assertion `min < max' failed.
