Hi, I'd like to use shared pointers with CodeWarrior 8.3 in a Carbon application. I have some preprocessing errors, the first one being relative to a thread Macro being undefined: lightweight_mutex.hpp line 86 # error Unrecognized threading platform I read in boot/config/plateform/macos.hpp that Boost was thread safe under Carbon but apparently there is no macro to define the usable type of thread... Any help appreciated, Bruno

ostream_iterator and std::copy - better solutions?

Before rolling my own, does boost have a facility to stream out an iterator range without the dangling delimiter at the end? Hi MSVC 7.1, Windows 2000 I'm trying to get to grips with the boost lambda library. I've managed to get the first example to work: #include <boost/lambda/lambda.hpp> #include <iostream> #include <cstdlib> #include <list> #include <algorithm> int main() { using namespace std; using namespace boost::lambda; list<int> v(10); for_each(v.begin(), v.end(), _1 = 12 ); return EXIT_SUCCESS; } but when I add the following line (also from the docs): for_each( v.begin(), v.end(), cout << *_1 << '\n' ); I get the following errors: error C2039: 'reference' : is not a member of 'std::iterator_traits<int>' error C2146: syntax error : missing ';' before identifier 'type' error C2501: 'boost::lambda::detail::contentsof_type<A>::type' : missing storage-class or type specifiers error C2039: 'type' : is not a member of 'boost::lambda::detail::contentsof_type<A>' error C2146: syntax error : missing ';' before identifier 'type' I've tried including some the other Lambda headers but this didn't improve the situation. "invalid token pasting" macro bug

When I use Spirit with CodeWarrior 9 (just released), I get a bunch of warnings as shown below. The CodeWarrior release notes explain that "According to the language standard, the '##' token pasting operator can only generate other tokens. This warning indicates when a paste was found that did not result in a token. The code will still compile as it did previously, but it may be a useful hint if the compiler emits an error later on." how to create fixtures in unit test framework

Hi all. The boost unit test framework seems to lack the xUnit buildUp/tearDown (whatever) methods meant to faciliate the creation of fixtures. Does that mean there is an alternative idiom to achieve the same effect ? Constructing new class-test-cases for each test seems a bit overkill. Regards, Anders.

Lambda operator= question

Hi people, That's the first time I'm using lambda and I'm stuck with something that can be resumed to: struct A { int Test() { return 0; } }; int x; A a; (var(x)=bind(&A::Test,_1))(a); In other words, I want to make a functor that calls a member function and stores its return value in some variable. I'm compiling with VC7.1 and it returns error C2440: '=' : cannot convert from 'const boost::tuples::cons<HT,TT>::stored_head_type' to 'int' Is there something I can do to get rid of this error and compile successfully? CodeWarrior PS2, Boost, & STL

Hello Boost Users, When i try to compile a class that use a vector with CodeWarrior for PS2 R3.03, i have this error message : Error : illegal use of incomplete struc/union/class 'Metrowerks::compile_assert<0>' (instantiating: 'std::vector<int, std::allocator<int>>') (instantiating: 'std::__vector_imp<int, std::allocator<int>, l>') vector line 729 ompile assert<bool(sizeof(T) == sizeof(typename Metrowerks::strore_as<T>;;type))> And just above the error line, in the vector file : // Error : illegal use of incomplete struct/union/class 'Metrowerks::compile_assert<0>' // This means that the store_as table in <msl_utility> is not set correctly. // sizeof(T) == sizeof(typename Metrowerks::store_as<T>::type must be true. The code compiles and works perfectly with VC6 sp5 on PC and XBOX. Thanks for any help.

[BGL] Adding one graph to another

I need to add/copy one graph into another, both completely connected, and then create an edge between one vertex in the original graph and a vertex in the one copied into it. The edge/vertex properties needs to be copied as well, and this needs to be fairly efficient. The new edge is straightforward, but is there any functionality for the copy/add operation? (Something like an "add_component" algorithm I guess...) To my understanding both the copy_graph and copy_component algorithms both replace all the content in the target graph. If not, what would be the most efficient way to solve this sort of problem? Cheers, -- Tarjei Knapstad

spirit list_p example

From boost-1.30.2 I built the list_parser.cpp example using MSVC++7.1. In the CSV list I added ",,2" to the end of the line to be parsed. The program ran but the neither of the added elements were included in the output vector. Having used the tokenizer before I know it will generally gobble up adjacent delimiters without any output. You can get the empty token if you ask for the delimiters as well and then just discard the delimiters (sort of). But I was surprised that the 2 didn't make it to the output vector. I expected the empty list entry would not make the output vector. I tried adding ~anychar_p to the rule but that didn't help. If I change the input list to add ",\"\",2" I get "" and 2 in the output vector. Applications like spreadsheets do not put missing column values for numeric columns as "" items generally. Maybe I am missing something because it certainly isn't the behavior I would expect (either from the parser or the tokenizer).

Well, I've trimmed you're example down some more, as to me it didn't seem to be important that the struct was a member of CFilter. So I think your question boils down to : struct A { int a; }; typedef std::map<int, A> my_map; void do_something_on_a_slice(int a) { // whatever } void f(const my_map& map_) { std::for_each(map_.begin(), map_.end(), /*what goes here*/); } You could use iterator_adaptors for this, but I think that is complicating things unnecessarily, something like this would work (untested) : struct select_a : std::unary_function<my_map::value_type, int> { const result_type& operator()(const argument_type& arg) const { return arg.second.a; } // similar non const operator here }; void f(const std::map<int, A>& map_) { boost::projection_iterator_generator<select_a, my_map::const_iterator>::type first(map_.begin()), last(map_.end()); std::for_each(first, last, do_something_on_a_slice); } See http://www.boost.org/libs/utility/projection_iterator.htm But I think bind in this situation is a better solution. Most of the binding code should be optimised away by the compiler to a bare mimimum. It may be that you are better changing container, a sorted vector perhaps. [BGL] Installing a property

Hi I have a mass spring system where the particles are mapped to the vertex name property of the vertex. Now I've read (in the BGL red book) that one can install a custom property using an enumerated type. However it says that the enum must be a unique number. How do I enforce this in my code? Hello folks, I've got an interesting little design problem and I'm looking for some advice on how best to implement an efficient solution. I'm reposting here because this _seems_ like a job for some type of iterator adaptor and I'm thinking that perhaps one of the Boost libraries might be useful in this context. But which (if any)? Would uBLAS help me here perhaps? Inconvenience in time_parsing.hpp - uninit variables

I was trying to use the date_time ptime functions with ISO syle input (boost 1.30.2 with MSVC++6 SP5). The function parse_undelimited_time_duration in time_parsing has three short variables hours, min, and sec that are uninitialized which lead to unpredictable results. These are at line 99. I stumbled on to this when I passed a string "20011027T0202" to ptime(from_iso_string()). To my surprise when I printed the value out it came back as 20011026T222345! The code works OK as is if you always pass a full HHMMSS. This must have been found in parse_delimited_time_duration as it has unsigned shorts that are intialized to zero.

boost::function syntax

Hello everyone, I was looking at the boost::function preferable syntax. boost::funcion<float (int,int) > I also see that this has also been accepted by the standard for future STL implementation. The C++ grammar for template declaration is as stated below: template-argument-list: template-argument template-argument-list , template-argument template-argument: assignment-expression type-id id-expression None of the 'declaration' rules also seem to parse the tokens 'float (int,int) (I know I am missing something here). I could not figure out why the string 'float (int,int)' is accepted by the compiler and what type it is assigned? Is it just a extension of the standard by GCC? Can somebody help me figure this out? The return type cannot be arbitrary, say a > lambda_functor type, making it not very useful for the LL. Specifically, the right side of "->" must be the NAME of a class' member or member function. It cannot be any kind of actual object (including pointers-to-member). This restricts the left side to: 1. A pointer to a (class/struct/union) data object (conventional C usage) 2. A class object with an "operator ->()" that returns a pointer to a data object 3. A class object with an "operator ->()" that returns an object that follows rules [2] or [3]. No matter what, "operator ->()" eventually leads to the standard C usage. All you can do is delay the event and build proxy objects to obtain the data. Daryle

First Boost installation under Windows and Borland

Hello, I'm a new Boost user and I need to install it (v. 1.30.0) under Windows 2000, with Borland C++ Builder 6. I've succeed in correctly installing and using it under linux, but I couldn't install it under Windows. I downloaded and unpacked boost_1_30_0.zip. Lambda shortcut?

Hi, Is there a short cut for bind(&class::method_name, this, _1)? I could wrap it in a macro, as I use it enough, but is there something nicer I'm missing? I often just do the for loop as it is a little more readable, maybe... How to use boost::bind

Hi, I have a project with many occurences of while loops iterating through a container, and operating on the data. I'd like to use for_each() and turn them into one-liners, but I don't like writing one-off functor classes. I was hoping boost::bind could help, but I've read the docs, scratched my head, and failed to work out how the examples apply to my case. Maybe they don't and I'm trying to use it for something it cannot do? See an example below. My function currently looks something like grab_keys() and I want it to look like grab_keys2(). Could some kind soul show me how to write this? (or explain why it cannot be written). In particular, the following simple snippet suddenly wouldn't compile on 1.30.2 using MSVC 7.1: boost::filesystem::path p("dd"); boost::filesystem::ofstream os("dd"); It works, however, with the current CVS version. Hello, I'm been having great fun getting to know and starting to use the lambda library over the past month or so. I can't believe how well the optimizing compiler I have (Vc7.1) is able to convert these lambda expressions used in for_each or find_if into tight loops. However, there I things I'm certain are possible, but I haven't been able to figure out. More examples of using the library than are found in the doc would be extremely useful. For instance, how do I do the equivalent of the following using a single for_each with suitable lambda expression as operator? using namespace boost::lambda; std::vector<int> vec1; std::vector<int> vec2; struct tOp { std::vector<int>& m_vec; tOp( std::vector<int>& vec ) : m_vec( vec ) {} void operator()( int entry ) { std::vector<int>::iterator it = std::find_if( m_vec.begin(), m_vec.end(), _1 == entry ); if ( it != m_vec.end() ) m_vec.erase( it ); } }; // How to use lambda expression here for third arg? std::for_each( vec1.begin(), vec1.end(), tOp( vec2 )); Basically, I have two lists (vectors) that overlap. boost.thread, DEC C++ (OpenVMS)

Hi, I've just tried to compile boost.thread under OpenVMS and got it working mostly fine, with a few quirks. I'm using Boost 1.30.2 and DEC C++ 6.5 under OpenVMS Alpha 7.1-1H1. OpenVMS provides a compliant(?) pthreads implementation. Note that I did _not_ use Boost.jam (I did try, but couldn't get it going). Compiling the .cpp files under BOOST_ROOT/libs/thread/src works pretty fine, once having defined BOOST_HAS_THREADS, BOOST_HAS_PTHREADS and BOOST_HASTIMEOFDAY on the compiler's commandline. But not for tss.cpp - I get the following error: ------------------------------------------------------------------------- res = pthread_key_create(&m_key, cleanup); .....................................^ %CXX-E-INCOMPATIBLEPRM, argument of type "void (*)(void *)" is incompatible with parameter of type "void (*)(void *) C" at line number 192 in file DISK$USER1:[COMMON.BOOST.LIBS.THREAD.SRC]TSS.CPP;1 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --- After some digging around I found out that the error only appears when using the compiler switch "/standard=strict_ansi", which is what I'm using all the time. Has anyone created property maps that operate out of core? either against a database or a flat file? Would you like to share? Also has anyone created a property map that, once create returns a constant value for all queries (writable is nice, it doesn't do anything with the write of course)? This might be useful for compactly representing constant edge capacities. Parent-Child Object Relationships with shared_ptr

Hello, I've been thinking of switching one of my projects to use boost::smart_ptr and I'm currently investigating this option a bit. In my project there are a lot of cases where an object acts as factory/parent object to create other child objects. These child objects must keep the parent object alive as long as one of them still exists. Or in other words, even if the client does not hold a pointer to the parent object anymore, the parent must continue to exist as long as there is still a child object. Also the child objects sometimes need to have access to the parent object that created them. Therefore, I thought I'd have them hold a shared_ptr to the parent object. So the situation looks something like this, where both Parent and Child objects are only allocated on the heap and should only be passed around as shared_ptr. class Parent { public: boost::shared_ptr<Child> CreateChild() const { boost::shared_ptr<Child> child(new Child(this)); return child; } }; class Child { friend class Parent; protected: Child(const boost::shared_ptr<Parent> parent) : m_parent(parent) {} private: boost::shared_ptr<Parent> m_parent; }; As far as I understand it I can't do new Child(this) because Child expects a shared_ptr, so I'd have to derive Parent from enable_shared_from_this. However, in my project there are a number of classes in a rather complicated class hierarchy to which the above pattern applies and I'd thus like to avoid having to (multiply) derive them from enable_shared_from_this. Is there another, possibly better way of achieving what I want to do (keep the parent alive as long as there are still child objects) that I haven't discovered yet? Or do I really have to derive all these classes from enable_shared_from_this? Do I have to derive each class in a class hierarchy from enable_shared_from_this, if each of them needs to give out a shared_ptr-managed this pointer? Thanks for any help, Martin

This is my very first experience with Boost. I am actually trying to use the SDTS++ libraries (if anyone is familiar with them) which use Boost. Anyway, I successfully built the library using the Jamfile that was included with the download which looks something like this: lib sdtsxx : ... : <include>$(BOOST_ROOT) <include>$(TOP) <include>. <include>$(TOP)/Windows # to get bogus "unistd.h" <rtti>on <exception-handling>on <msvc><*><cflags>-TP # force to compile as C++ <gcc><*><cflags>"-x c++" # force to compile as C++ <gcc><*><define>VECTOR_ITERATOR_POINTER_NOT_EQUIVALENT : debug release ; However, what I need is for the library to be a dll. Compiler help

I'm trying to try out the thread library on HP-UX and SGI Irix using GNU GCC and have not been able to run them succesfully. I noticed that on the "Boost Regression Tests" the compiler Status for both my platforms and compilers have failed with messages similar to what I am getting. Do I have any options or is it just not possible to try the thread library for my systems. Thanks

Hello Drew, I implement managed assembly in mc++. I use c++ library with smart pointers and stlport on the interface to implement a functionality in unmanaged c++, even if it is exposed to .net through managed classes. So this scenario in general works. Holger has already answered you, I see also the problem in different heaps/runtime versions. You must ensure the same versions of the runtime (not only debug/release but also version of msvs - 6, 7, 7.1) and of the templated libraries used (in my case stlport for 6, 7, 7.1, which also must use the same runtime). I use msvcrt/msvcrtd everywhere and link everything automatically using pragmas to prevent strange errors from manual configuration. It can look complex but in reality it is pretty simple. The second option (as Holger says) is to make a simple facade to the c++ library (all you might use), which will not have templates (here smart pointers) on the interface, and to use this facade instead. You could use the /MD[d] option for both projects, so that both modules share a common CRT heap. I'd prefer to move intrusive_ptr_add_ref/release functions to the program that uses the instrusive_ptr. Don't export these functions from the DLL. Rather include these functions at build time. I originally posted this to microsoft.public.dotnet.languages.vc, but they referred me back to here. Has anyone used boost's intrusive_ptr with Managed C++ extensions? I have a small project where the executable (managed) is linked to a native C++ dll. The code looks like: int _tmain() { boost::intrusive_ptr<Unmanaged> pUn = __nogc new Unmanaged(); return 0; } when I exit out of main, boost::intrusive_ptr_release() throws an exception. The last known method called is: UnmanagedLib.dll!_CrtIsValidHeapPointer(...) Line 1807 but when I replace my code with: Unmanaged* pUm = new Unmanaged(); delete pUm; no exception is thrown. [bgl] question to induced subgraphs

Hello, I use an induced subgraph of a graph with additional user defined properties like coordinates and so on. Do I have access to this properties via the get and put functions using the indices of the subgraph or do I have to access these properties via the parent (if it is the root) resp. root of the subgraph? I tried both without the demanded success. Using the second way the results were a little bit more accurate than using the first way, but they were wrong in either case. I created the subgraph as Graph& tSubgraph = g.create_subgraph; where g is a before initialized graph. Maybe it works copying the properties to the subgraph, but that wouldn't be efficient in my opinion. Thanks in advance for your answers, Stephan

PC-Lint reports errors for VC6-specific implementation in is_same.hpp

Hi all, Since I have included boost\dynamic_bitset.hpp in my project, PC-Lint reports many thousands of redefinitions of symbol 'is_same_part_1<<1>>::part_2<<1>> for the following code in type_traits\is_same.hpp. #ifdef BOOST_MSVC // the following VC6 specific implementation is *NOT* legal // C++, but has the advantage that it works for incomplete // types. template< typename T1 > struct is_same_part_1 { template<typename T2> struct part_2 { enum { value = false }; }; template<> struct part_2<T1> { enum { value = true }; }; }; If I replace #ifdef BOOST_MSVC with #if (defined BOOST_MSVC) && (BOOST_MSVC < 1300) The code compiles with Visual Studio .NET 2003 and PC-Lint doesn't report any error. ClearCase and Boost

Heya Everyone, We use Rationals ClearCase for our source code control here at work and I'm trying to figure out how to best integrate Boost into the ClearCase VOB's. I understand that this probably isn't the ideal forum but I felt certain that someone else out there has a similar configuration! My issue has to do with the different versions of boost. I don't need to maintain a complete source history (don't need every change to every file, just regular releases) but I do want to have multiple versions located at the same place (ie ie want there to be only one boost directory, not boost_1_30, boost_1_30_2 etc) with labels to specify the version. This way our build environment can always look at the one place in the VOB's and we use our config spec to specify which version we're using. Should be simple. ;) Now, I can download a version of boost, extract the files, export them (with clearexport_ffile) then import (clearimport) to the VOB. Then I can label those files. Unfortunately, if any files (or directories) have been deleted I won't know about it - they'll just remain there. I had a quick scan through the attic files and it seems like deleting files is not particularly uncommon. I don't want those old files (which could have been deprecated or buggy or whatever) just lying around waiting for bugs to creep in. So does anyone know of a better way? How are other people doing this? Cheers, Matt PS I've thought of 'hacky' solutions, like telling clearexport_ffile to create a unique branch for every new version of boost and just leaving each new version on the branch...or creating a branch and then running a script over everything, determining if anything needs removing. But, as I said, these are hacky! :)

[BGL/iterator_adaptor] retrieving edge iterators from a const graph object?

I'm developing an algorithm based on a DFS of a directed graph that models the BidirectionalGraph concept. In my DFS visitor I have a need to retrieve the pair of in_edge iterators of a specific vertex in my finish_vertex method. Invoking boost::in_edges(Vertex, Graph) and discarding the result compiles fine. However, I can't compile the statement boost::tie(edgeiniterBegin, edgeiniterEnd) = boost::in_edges(Vertex, Graph). I'm struggling to understand why the const-ness of the Graph object results in a "no user defined conversion. from const boost::iterator_adaptor ...." compilation error. I suspect that I have incorrectly specified the type of the in-edge iterators to which I'm attempting to boost::tie the returned iterator pair (my target iterators are declared as boost::graph_traits<mygraph_t>::in_edge_iterator currently) but haven't been able to figure out how else to explain my intent to the compiler. I'll post the specific error message produced by the Windows version of the Intel 7.x compiler and source if necessary - but I'm guessing that I'm missing something pretty obvious here. Any clarification/suggestions would be appreciated. TIA - Chris

[BGL] named parameter defaults and namespace confusion

In my project, I'm using several different graph objects that are declared in different namespaces. All of these graphs use default internal color maps. Suppose I declare a graph in namespace A. In another namespace, say namespace B, I attempt to invoke a DFS using the named parameter version of the call specifying only the visitor and defaulting the rest of the parameters. Specifically, I do not specify the color map in the named parameter list. What I expected was that the DFS would find, and use the default internal color map of the graph declared in namespace A. However, it appears that it does not and allocates a temporary color map (I assume the compiler searches namespace B, not A). Subsequently when DFS attempts to initialize the color map to white, a fault occurs at runtime (I haven't had time to get into the guts of DFS and figure out exactly why this bombs yet). I've worked around this by using the standard (sans named parameters) version of the DFS call (explicitly passing in a reference to the internal color map). This seeming interaction between the named parameter mechanism and namespaces is pretty subtle - if not for the runtime fault, I would likely have never noticed that the internal property map wasn't being used during the search. Has anyone else seen this? - Chris

What's the rational for the requirement that ~pointee() be no throw? Instead of nothrow could it have been specified that shared_ptr functions throw only if ~pointee() throws? augmented_crc problem with gcc 3.1 and 3.2

Hi, I've just noticed that my usage of boost::augmented_crc has stopped working since upgrading to gcc 3.x. The problem turns out to be with the workaround extra parameter BOOST_ACRC_DUMMY_PARM_TYPE*. The usage (in crc.hpp) looks like this: template < std::size_t Bits, BOOST_CRC_PARM_TYPE TruncPoly > typename uint_t<Bits>::fast augmented_crc( void const *buffer, std::size_t byte_count, typename uint_t<Bits>::fast initial_remainder BOOST_ACRC_DUMMY_PARM_TYPE ); Which doesn't supply a default value for the fourth parameter (i.e. it really requires all four parameters). Curiously, there is a BOOST_ACRC_DUMMY_INIT defined, which would supply a default value, but it is never used. bgl compile problem with vc++ 7.1

Hello, I've checked out the newest version of boost from the cvs directory on boost-consulting.com. I've tried to recompile my bgl program to be able to use the latest changes of the bgl code. [Q] Boost-Build V2

Dear Listmembers, since a few weeks I'm using boost within a development system which should be changed towards operating system independence. As boost-buil V2 has a lot of nice features I wanted to base the build process on it. Unfortunatly it's very confusing to get all the information I need and sometimes it is not clear to which boost-build version (v1 or v2) some documentation belongs to. I hope this list is the right place to ask some questions about this. I'm going to describe the my current setup first (which is a little bit longish in order to cover all important points, hopefully) and afterwards I'll explain the problems. The scenario: We have some self-made class libraries which depend on downloaded packages (one is boost). So I thought of using the (usage-)dependency features of boost-build v2 for automatically using the right include paths and the according libraries. (I'm using milestone 6 of boost-build) root | + pkgs + boost_1_30_0 | | | + log4cpp_0.3.4b + include | + lib | + mylib + include | + src | + myapps + testapp + src The idea was to separate the information of which package versions to use and where libraries and include files reside. Dan, The date_time.lib library is a static lib. The built date_time.dll actually has no exports in it, so for VC purposes is useless. I would say don't worry about it, and just use the static lib. On a side note, has anyone been working on placing built items into a common directory, say <boost_top_dir>/lib? If not, I have a patch that should help alot. uClibc and Boost

Has anyone had success using Boost with the uClibc libraries? In particular, have you got Boost.Python to work? I am using the getting_started1.cpp example provided with Boost. I am using Boost 1.30.0, uClibc 0.9.20 and Python 2.2.3. Note that uClibc does not currently support a dlopen() called library calling a dlopen(). I have found that as long as the library is loaded with Python, I can get it to work. I am currently using the SSL version of the socket module, which is using SSL libraries linked against Python. I have tried 2 techniques so far, but both result in core dumps. 1. Compile Python against uClibc and force linking with libboost_python.so 2. Compile Pyhton against uClibc only. Build Boost application by linking against libboost_python.a so no external library is needed. It may be that the 2 libraries are simply not compatible at this stage. Does anyone have any ideas? David Abrahams has suggested low level debugging to work out what is causing the core dump, but if the problem lies deep within uClibc, then I have a problem. Regards, Jeff Gray

newbie metaprogramming question

Hello Boost experts, I'm starting learning about template metaprogramming and I discovered that Boost provide several libraries in that area. I tried to see if those libraries could be used for a piece of code I have in my mind but I have a hard time figuring out how to start with it. I don't know if it is because I try to apply metaprogramming techniques in a use case where they doesn't fit or because of my lack of experience with these tools. I'm posting my use case here to get some help and advice about it. In a library I provide two classes: 1) An abstract base class (let's call it Base) from which user will derive their own classes. 2) A manager class responsible for manipulating instances of classes derived from Base. The user, in his application, create an an arbitrary number of classes derived from Base. Let's call them A, B and C for example. He create a typelist containing all those classes and passes it as a parameter to the manager class: typedef boost::mpl::list< A, B, C > my_types ; typedef Manager< my_types> my_manager ; When an instance of my_manager is created I would like to automatically create one instance of each type present in the typelist and these instances should be stored in a container where I could access them later. Errors building boost w/ VC++ 6.0 sp5

I downloaded boost_1_30_0.zip, unpacked the zip file, cd'ed into boost_1_30_0, and ran "bjam "-sTOOLS=msvc". Most of the library seemd to compile fine (Python was skipped since I didn't have it installed). Bjam failed to update 12 targets, skipped 12 targets (the same 12 that failed?), and updated 452 targets. Hi all, finding edges of cycles in a directed graph is a solved problem and done by the strong_components algorithm. Is there also any a good solution for finding the path (= the exact sequence of vertices) that encloses a strong component? (Note that in a strong component there can be also smaller subcycles that are not of interest.) With other words: I want to find the way through a strong component that visits all its edges. Using shared_ptr<> with boost::lamda

shared_ptr<> can't be easily used in lambda expressions, because there is no operator->* defined. So, there are two problems in two different libraries: 1) operator->* needs to be added to Smart Pointers library. It can be easily done for data-members, but not for methods, since it includes return type deduction from template parameters. So there is another problem: 2) boost::function_traits<> from Type Traits library (result_type particulary) does not work for class methods.

Jason, Speaking as someone who downloads and uses lots of open-source libraries, I expect that if another library is required, it will be stated in the documentation, and that it is up to me, the library user, to ensure that paths are correctly set up for my compiler. Just don't forget to include the website where I can download the required libraries. There should be no need to modify any of your (the developer's) library files in order for it to work. Compiler include paths are very easy to set up, both on Unix, where you would use something like autoconf to help set everything up, and on Windows, where Visual Studio has a simple directory include dialog box to type into. Again, you (the developer) should only need to state that the library requires another library(i.e. Boost), and me (the user) should be able to deal with it. If I can't, I (the user) actually need to RTFM about my compiler. [date_time] library binaries for VC7.1?

I've been using boost for a while, but now for the first time I'm using a component that isn't entirely header-based, namely date_time in boost 1.30.0. After building boost for VC7.1, I find a .lib file in boost_1_30_0\libs\date_time\build\bin\libboost_date_time.lib\msvc\debug \runtime-link-dynamic and a .dll in boost_1_30_0\libs\date_time\build \bin\boost_date_time.dll\msvc\debug\runtime-link-dynamic. There are a couple of things that I don't understand about these files. Is the .lib file supposed to be the import library for the .dll? Linking against the .lib file hasn't produced any import references in my applications. Perhaps I'm just not hitting any out-of-line functionality, but it sure seems like the .lib file is a static library rather than an import library. Also, running DUMPBIN /EXPORTS on the .dll file shows no exported symbols related to date_time classes, as far as I can see. It really looks like it's exporting a bunch of stuff related to the standard C++ library, which makes no sense to me. Using Boost as a Library Dependency

I recently decided to refactor my library's API using the benefits given by boost::shared_ptr, so this now means my library uses boost. I'm trying to figure out how my installation process should go. Since I'm only using shared_ptr I've trimmed down a custom boost version that is only a few hundred k (rather than 10 megs) of just the files that I use. I've put the minimum boost files in my own directory structure so that my library can compile on its own. But when using the library, then what would the user do? Ideally I could have the installer for my library by copy the files to the compiler's include directory, but that's not particularly nice, espically since Boost is quite a popular library, and I don't want to litter up their include directory and most espically not overwrite any installation of Boost they have placed there. One thing that might work, if compilers support include directory "overrides" is if the user is using the full Boost library, to place its -I line before (or after?) the -I for my library, so that they can see my includes, but any boost includes will be "overridden" by their full version of Boost. But this leads to another question: If I compile my library with Boost x but the user has Boost y installed when he links with my library (I DO pass shared_ptr back and forth between user code, so it's not just used internally), what will happen? The shared_ptr interface seems to be oft changing, and so right now my code would only compile for Boost 1.30 (or later? Speaking of that, anyone know why there are no files listed for download for Boost 1.30.1 but it was announced a week ago?). I'm new to these things so I appreciate any feedback or answers you have. The library is just an open-source library I'm writing on my own free time, and I don't have a lot of experience from using/installing commercial C++ libraries to draw upon. Jason Winnebeck

Getting std::iterator_category from boost iterator adaptor

I have a situation where I want to specialize a class template on the basis of iterator_category, but I don't see how to get one of the standard categories when passed a boost iterator adapter. Currently, std::iterator_traits<MyIter>::iterator_category is giving me: boost::iterator_tag<boost::writable_lvalue_iterator_tag , boost::random_access_traversal_tag> I need random_access_iterator_tag for the right specialization to happen. Is there any way to get the *standard* iterator category from a boost iterator? [Spirit] file_iterator confusion

Hello. I am just beginning to look at the spirit library, but am confused by the way file_iterator is working. Could anyone explain to me why this works: typedef spirit::file_iterator <char_t> iterator_t; iterator_t first(argv[1]); // check first is valid ... iterator_t last = first.make_end(); but this doesn't: typedef spirit::file_iterator <char_t> iterator_t; iterator_t first; iterator_t last; boost::tie(first, last) = open_file(argv[1]); // check first is valid ... Both codes compile, but only the first method results in the file being read. In the second instance, the correct number of chars are read, but only the first char is output (multiple times). The open_file function is simply: std::pair<iterator_t, iterator_t> open_file(char const * name) { iterator_t first(name); iterator_t last = first ? first.make_end() : iterator_t(); return std::make_pair(first, last); } Minimal sample code attached. Using BGL Graphviz with MSVC7

Is there documentation anywhere that explains how to build and link graphviz for MSVC .NET for use with the BOOST graph library? I am trying to compile the example ospf-example.cpp from the BOOST graph library in MSVC .NET. I am using BOOST 1.30.0. I built the graphviz library using bjam with the vc7 toolset. I am getting a compile error: c:\boost_1_30_0\boost\tuple\detail\tuple_basic_no_partial_spec.hpp(83): error C2679: binary '=' : no operator found which takes a right-hand operand of type 'const boost::detail::adj_list_gen<Graph,VertexListS,OutEdgeListS,DirectedS,VertexP roperty,EdgeProperty,GraphProperty,EdgeListS>::config::edge_iterator' (or there is no acceptable conversion) with [ Graph=boost::adjacency_list<boost::vecS,boost::vecS,boost::directedS,boost:: no_property,boost::property<boost::edge_weight_t,int,boost::no_property>,boo st::no_property,boost::listS>, VertexListS=boost::vecS, OutEdgeListS=boost::vecS, DirectedS=boost::directedS, VertexProperty=boost::no_property, EdgeProperty=boost::property<boost::edge_weight_t,int,boost::no_property>, GraphProperty=boost::no_property, EdgeListS=boost::listS ] I think this error is due to the fact that MSVC does not support partial template specialization. Dirk, The following should not compile: for_each(v.begin(), v.end(), boost::bind(&myclass::print, _1)); since myclass::print actually takes two arguments and the first one is not the std::string, but the object of class myclass. Under cl(MS)/icl(Intel) compiler hash-def '_DLL' denotes dynamic linking of the C runtime library. hi, i have a c++ function that returns a reference to a c++ object. i want to expose this function to Python making it return the Python version of the object. i'm using Boost.Python. i understood that i have to use to_python_converter but the body of the A_to_Python::convert function is mystery for me. BGL write_graphviz and VertexList type

Hello, I've been trying to use the write_graphviz function in BGL, and I've noticed that it appears to be sensitive to the type of VertexList used in the graph. adjacency_lists using a boost::vecS produce vertex indices in integer form like: graph G { 0[label="0"]; 1[label="1"]; 0--1 [label="2.8"]; } but the same code backed by boost::listS seems to not dereference completely: graph G { 0x80545f0[label="10"]; 0x8054608[label="11"]; 0x80545f0--0x8054608 [label="2.8"]; } dot doesn't like this. I notice that write_graphviz dereferences boost::graph_traits<Graph>::vertex_iterator to print the vertex. Are the listS and vecS *operators different somehow? The vector backed adjacency_list also seems to be automagically setting the vertex_index property to the actual index of the vertex in the storage vector instead of the value given in add_vertex(). My question is: Is this the expected behavior for these classes or some problem I've managed to create on my own? Thanks, Solomon

Boost smart pointers.

Hello All, I have been trying to understand the smart pointer library. One thing that I did not understand was in the documentationin quite beginning: "T may be an incomplete type at the point of smart pointer declaration. Unless otherwise specified, it is required that T be a complete type at points of smart pointer instantiation." So what exactly does this incomplete/complete type mean? Does this have anything to do with the class pointed to being abstract /concrete ? thanks, regards, amit.

Hi: - managed to build "lib" using bjam tool. - copied that to a conveneient place - tried linking the "ls example" - I get a link error - file name not found. My environment is Borland Builder C++, 6.0. On MSVC++ 6.0, I get too many compile errors. Any hints? Greatly appreciated. Thanks. Sarwan

I'd like to use the graph library to support connections between different types of objects. To do this I've created a class GraphNode that forms the base class for various other objects that can become vertices of the graph. Dear all, I'm a bjam newbie trying to build the BGL in boost 1.30.0 on a DEC Alpha running linux. Search in the folowing strings (see below) using expression like: /exchange/test/(?!Drafts)/a.EML/b.png fails /exchange/test/Drafts/a.EML/b.gif /exchange/test/Inbox/a.EML/b.png /exchange/test/Inbox/a.EML/b.gif /exchange/test/Drafts/a.EML/b.png At the same moment I can suceesfully search using the expression: /exchange/test/Inbox/a.EML/b.(?!png). >From online documentation I realize that regex supports lookahed search. Please help me understand what I am doing wrong. P.S. It is tested with the program closely modeled from example provided for regex_search. Thank you for your help. *string allocates it's own copy of the string, so your pmem pointer is leaked. why does this leak memory from the first call to "new"? how can I prevent the leak? wchar_t* pmem = new wchar_t[10]; boost::shared_ptr<std::wstring> cp ( new std::wstring(pmem) ); thanks for the help, .Aaron
