This is a minor point but one worth correcting for the sake of correctness and ease of following the examples. In the boost-1.30.2 distribution, the file libs/graph/example/kevin-bacon.cpp makes a reference to a "./kevin-bacon.dat" file, but the file in both the distribution and the documentation is actually kevin_bacon.dat. The only difference being '_' vs. '-'. This is easily fixed by an end-user, but it would be nice to have the examples work out of the box. -tfo

Bug in graph library transitive closure algorithm?

Is anyone aware of any bugs in the graph library 'transitive_closure' algorithm? I believe I have a concrete example that exhibits an obvious bug (in particular, missing vertices that are reachable from certain source vertices), but (1) wasn't sure if there was a work-around or some well-known avoidance tactic and (2) whether anyone was actively supporting the graph library components. novice question: LAPACK & uBLAS

Hi, I am a novice to all this. I am looking for a C++ library that would let me interface with BLAS/LAPACK. The immediate problem I have is the diagonalization of a large dense symmetric (possibly hermitian) matrix. (Speed will be a consideration eventually.) I would like to use the eigenproblem solvers in LAPACK. I understand that uBLAS does not have a full interface to LAPACK yet, but it looks like it is possible to use lapack at some level. (Does anyone have an example program excerpt?) I would be grateful for any advice about whether uBLAS is suitable for this. I am also considering other libraries such as MTL and Blitz++. I will be using Intel C++ compiler and/or GNU g++ on a Linux PC. Regards Derek

Necessity of assert in iterators (as called from graph)?

The shared_ptr constructor from raw pointer is marked explicit (quick explanation: http://www.glenmccl.com/tip_023.htm) This is because once you put a pointer into a shared_pointer, it's lifetime is now managed by the shared_ptr. The authors feel it is very important that this is completely intentional, and rightly so. Hi, I have a question related to the boost::shared_ptr constructor. I want to be able to store boost::shared_ptr<Base> objects in a std::vector. However, I don't want to bother my users with the fact (implementation detail) that I'm using shared_ptrs instead of raw pointers. The simplified sample code below more or less clarifies what I want. The code in line 27 is the code I would like to be able to use. Below that line, several attempts to get the code to compile can be found. I understand that line 32 won't compile, because it is equivalent to line 27. However, line 37 left me puzzled. I would expect that the conversion of B* to shared_ptr<B> would be trivial. Not so. Using boost::mutex in a boost::shared_ptr

Hi Can I store boost::mutex'es in a map using the following constuct typedef boost::shared_ptr<boost::mutex> MutexPtr; typedef map< std::string, MutexPtr> MutexMap; MutextMap mmap; mmap["foo"] = MutexPtr( new boost::mutex ); I'm not sure that this is safe to do - the boost::mutex is boost::noncopyable which might indicate that there could be a potentional problem. I believe to be making my way up the learning curve, but this seems to be a bit of problem. The proper destruction... Here is what I've been thinking. First the destruction of the subject (observee). As proposed in "Design Patterns", the subject could notify the observers about being destroyed, so the observers can handle that situation. But in my (more or less limited) experience, most often the observer is the one that controls the life-time of the subject (possibly by the means of shared_ptr). So this really presents no problem... But how to synchronize the destruction of the observer with a nofication originating from another thread? The observer's destructor would most likely perform Subject::unregister... But a call to Observer::update might have already been dispatched... The possible solutions I can think of are: 1. Make Subject::unregister have a postcodition stating that the observer will receive notifications no more (as of the moment the function returns). The words that come into my mind while thinking of possible implementations are: mutex, condition, dead-lock, inconsistency... What should the observer be allowed to do from inside the update function? Inspect only? I guess that could work... 2. Subject holds weak_ptr<Observer> and removes dead observers. I like it because of simplicity, but it (possibly) requires that Observer inherits enable_shared_from_this. In my design, the subject usualy passes a pointer to itself in the Observer::update method... Better yet - a shared_ptr, as it is more clean to compare shared pointer, especially inside the container. And how does it get shared_ptr to itself? shared_from_this() again. Is it really necessary? Although it does make the code easier to maintain. I might be wrong, but I get the impression that there is not much information on multithreading and destruction in C++. Destruction the way it is, makes C++ my language of preference. The lectures usually starts with a queue or a buffer with one mutex and one (or two) conditional variables, but it doesn't get any better. How is the queue destroyed? What about consumer which is waiting on a conditional variable? What is the common way of dealing with all this? Java-like interrupt? That's basically what I've been doing. Hi Thomas, Thanks for the bug report. Since the BGL book uses '-', and I can't change that, I've instead change the documentation and source file to also use '-' instead of '_'. Missing default constructor for shared_count?

At line 109 of share_ptr (version 1.30.2) is the init list shared_ptr(): px(0), pn() which uses the default constructor for pn, which has type shared_count. However, there appears to be no such default constructor in shared_count. Am I missing something? Andrew P.S.: Forgive me if the answer appears somewhere easily searchable. I was unable to find an archive for bug reports or for this list. Pointers to such resources will be welcome.

How to know wheter a Boost.thread has ended ?

Hi, I need a way to find out if the threads that I created are done or not. I'm creating a somekind of thread_group that must clean the threads that have ended from the vector that keeps the threads within. void function () {} void main () { boost::thread thrd1(&function); //I'd need a function here to tell me that the thread has ended... if(thread1.IsDone()) { ... } } How can I do such a thing, any ideas? Hello, people, I've been using enable_shared_from_this a LOT, mostly for implementing the Observer pattern (an object holds a list of weak pointers to it's observers). I wanted to know why are shared_from_this member functions public instead of being protected? Also, I've used the following expression a few times: shared_polymorphic_cast<This>(shared_from_this()) Any thoughts on putting it inside the enable_shared_from_this... shared_from_base<This>() or polymorphic_shared_from_this<This>() or such? I see that Regex++ always treats ^ and $ as start and end of line rather than start and end of buffer. Perl does this only if the /m switch is used. Is there a simple way to switch between these two interpretations when compiling a regex?

boost::function compilation

Hi, I'm currently trying to use boost::function with VC++ 7.0 and I get the compilation error stating that function is not a member of boost. I've already included the header <boost/function.hpp> as well as the library path in the project settings but it just doesn't seem to be able to compile. The documentation specifies things about the preferred and portable syntax. Is there even some setting choose the desired syntax, becoz there are no hints or instructions that mention anything on it in the the documentation and I can't find anything in the source files as well. When Lambda's bind() is used to create a functor for dereferencing a stored data member pointer given an instance pointer, it seems it is not possible to pass the resulting functor a temporary instance pointer. Stubbing for unit testing, what approach should I use

I am looking for set of techniques for isolation testing. As applications are designed with massive number of dependencies between classes and these dependencies end-up in external systems such as databases and OS, it's hard to extract function or part of class for efficient unit test. Basically I need an advice on what coding techniques should be used to allow flexible (generic?) stubbing: - function of a class may need to be tested in isolation from world (members could be global data for the purpose) - class may be tested with stubbed set functions; - data members could be stubbed, so no dependensies on classes which do not participate in test; Please advice. Hello, We are really very happy and impressed with boost's smart_pointers, and we found the section "Smart Pointer Programming Techniques" (http://www.boost.org/libs/smart_ptr/sp_techniques.html) in boost smart_pointer documentation very useful, but we are having this problem: We have two classes X and Y, and each object of class X holds an object of class Y, and we need to implement a method in class X to get a shared_ptr<Y> so we can access Y instance inside X, and we need that X objects (that are too referenced by shared_ptr<X>) don't be deleted until all references to the Y object are destroyed. Ok, now I see that my object is being copied. But for the lines : FakeClass *item1 = new FakeClass(1);//,item2(2); group.create_thread(*item1); I get : FakeClass #1 says : I'm alive! The copy constructor is called 4 times!!! And it is called 3 times before the thread has even started! Is there a way to avoid that ? I was going to use the thread_group to manage the connection to a simple server applications, so that all the threads would hold info about the socket used for connection, etc... And that if the objectdestructor is called, the connection to the socket would be closed... With my object being destroyed 3 times before the thread has started, it gets a bit hard to manage that way... remove_pointer

Good day to everyone, I am trying to find a portable enough implementation of remove_pointer (MSVC 6, MSVC 7.1, G++ 2.95.3, G++ 2.96). The "usual" template technique relies on partial template specialization, which MSVC 6.0 does not support. As far as I can tell, Boost's version of remove_pointer is a little bit of a "cheat" - i.e. it becomes predefined only for primitive types. Am I right about that? I'm a bit of a newb in these parts of London ;-) If this is true, then I'm screwed - and I can't convert a generic pointer type to the pointee type. If it is not true, then what is the technique? Leo. P.S. Just in case - I know how to figure out _whether_ the type is a pointer, and now just trying to strip it.

Hi, I would like to raise a couple of points about the iterator adaptors. Firstly, is it really necessary to have the predicate as part of the template specification for the filter_iterator? Surely it can be assumed that it will always be convertible to boost::function<bool (const value_type&)> ? Secondly, by allowing the return type of the function used by the transform_iterator to be a reference can we not use it to implement a more generic form of indirect_iterator? boost library build consistency

Is there any definition of how libraries are supposed to build? I've integrated the building of required boost libraries into the build system for our projects. There seems to be some inconsistency in what gets built and where it gets put. In particular, for the thread and regex libs, boost builds both shared and static versions of the libraries and puts them in a bin-stage subdirectory under the library build directory. However, for the filesystem library, only the static library gets built and the bin-stage/ directory is not used. Is there a standard behavior library developers are supposed to follow in this regard? Can I count on the bin-stage/ as a short-named location for the most recent build of any library? Are the boost or boost_filestsystem maintainers interested in the simple fix to the Jamfile to make that library behave like the other two I mentioned? Thanks Scott Urban

parse error in format library

I've been successfully using the tokenizer library for some time, and am very grateful for it. The format library looks very userful - I need to convert a bunch of old printf's to ostreams. However, in attempting to compile with gcc 2.96 I'm finding that there are many substitutions that need to be made, such as replacing "char_traits" with "basic_string". I'm using Boost 1.30.0 in production, but have also tried 1.30.2 with the same results. I see that the format library headers include the header file "boost/config.hpp". Is it likely that I have some sort of configuration error? Where do I find information on toolset compatabiliy for specific Boost libraries, since this one does not seem to be compatible with mine? -- D. Problem with is_class and is_enum

In the following code, struct foo2 is mistakenly taken for an enum, which breaks is_class, which leads to some unfortunate problems in boost::python. Problem appears on both Boost 1.30.0 and a one-month old CVS checkout, using gcc 3.3.2 and 2.95 and Intel icc 7.1 for linux. I have tried specializing 'is_enum', setting it by hand to return 'false', but though it works for this simple case, it does no good when the call to is_enum is buried deep inside boost. I rely heavily on being able to do these implicit conversions for foo2, so if anyone has an idea on how to make this work, it would be great. compilation on Win64 platform with MSVC7.1 for 64 bit

Hi, we're using Boost 1.30.0 with MSVC7.1 on a Win32 platform. Currently where working on a port to a Win64 platform using the MSVC7.1 for IA64 compiler. (13.10.2240.8 for IA64) I just compiled the code as is and unfortunately I encountered errors in boost headers. This probably is because of missing/bad defines for this 'unknown' platform in the config headers... I was wondering if somebody already tried to compile boost on a 64 bit platform, and if he/she succeeded? Or if there are known implementation details which would cause boost 'never' to work on 64 bit platforms? If there are no known 'showstoppers' then I suppose I'll have to go through the Boost Configuration Reference or should I look somewhere else? Thanks, Bart

Compile Boost.thread libraries has a static library (.lib) with msvc 6 ?

Hi everyone, I'm a total newbie to boost, but I've got to developp a project that could use some of the powerful boost libraries, so I'm trying to make a move in that way... Ok, most of the boost libraries I can build in a static way and create (.lib) files with Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0 for my partners to use . But I am having a problem doing the same thing with the Boost.Thread libraries... First question : Is it possible to build this librairy in a (.lib) file with msvc 6.0? I'm getting tons of warnings concerning "dllexport" problems, but the (.lib) are still created. I was wondering if someone could help me understanding/fixing the warning problems : warning C4275: non dll-interface class 'boost::noncopyable' used as base for dll-interface class 'boost::detail::condition_impl' c:\wrk\common\boost-1.30.2\boost\noncopyable.hpp(22) : see declaration of 'noncopyable' warning C4273: 'thread::thread' : inconsistent dll linkage. dllexport assumed. I don't see any way to use bind to directly construct an object, other than calling a function that returns an object. Or am I missing something? Use a std::list as a buffer, so that deleting and inserting is inexpensive, and you don't have to perform copies and update iterators when reading in more input. Fill your (sliding window) buffer, then regex it, using the partial match feature whenever you have not already detected the end of the file. If a match occurs, any characters occuring before the match can be processed (serialized to disk, or whatever) and removed from the buffer. Repeat this looking for a match until you reach the end of current input. You'll either have "no match" or "partial match" at this point: remove non-matching characters (that could be all of them) at this point, then re-fill your buffer with more data and keep going. If you're just doing one substitution, that's fine, but if more, there are a few things to keep in mind. I have done over 60 distinct substitutions at a time on a stream of 0.1 gigabytes using this technique, and it works quite quickly. (I used a buffer that held about 1 million characters (2^20), but I also tested with buffers as small as 256 characters -- the strings I was matching were not large). Just read in data, process all the substitutions in order, write the data out and repeat. If you're doing multiple substitutions, you (of course) can't flush any data from memory until you've tried all the substitutions on the current region of interest. Also, for each later substituion, the current region of interest shrinks because you have to acknowledge partial matches from earlier subsitutions. For example, say that there is no partial match at the end of substituions 1 through 6 (there might have been full matches where substitution was performed, that's okay.) But substituion 7 has a partial match at the last five characters. Now, your region of interest for substitution 8 is five characters smaller, because you don't want to process those last five characters because substitution 7 might change them once you've read in more input. The order of your substituions is important if the outputs of some desired subsitutions overlap with the inputs of others. If you are not grokking my meaning, I can fish around for the source code. Perhaps it's easier to explain in code than in words, my code for the entire process is maybe 10 or 15 lines. An alternative is to try to do some streambuf hacking, but the above method was simpler and adequate for my purposes. Trying to get boost threads working under visual .NET

I'm trying to get the Boost thread library working under Microsoft .Net, here is what I've done and the problems I'm seeing. I am currnetly using the regex lib and the date/time classes, which are working. I now want to start creating threads so I follow the given example, and started to get linker errors for xtime_get and boost::thread::sleep. So I look around, and do the bjam -sTOOLS=msvc in the appropriate threads directory and get no errors. It still won't link. I notice that the only boost*.lib files in my vc7\lib dir were from boost_regexp, so I copy 4 files boost_thread(d).dll/lib into that directory. I then explicitely add boost_threadd.lib into the project's link. Ok, so now my application compiles AND links, but it wants boost_threadd.dll when it executes. So I copy boost_threadd.dll into the projects Debug directory wehre the .exe compiles to. Now when I run it, I get a dialog box saying the application failed because "boost_regex_vc7_mdid.dll" can not be loaded! the regex stuff was working FINE and I don't think I did anyhting to change it. So can someone shed some light on this for me, please ? Why does it now want the boost_regex dll? Thanks for any input.. if I've missed some crucial documentation somewhere, sorry.

Building boost threads with MinGW

Hi, When I build boost threads with bjam and MinGW, the resulting DLL is not dependent on mingwm10.dll like (as I understand things) all MinGW multithreaded binaries should be. istream U istream_iterator -> traverser

Sidestepping any ascii/binary issues for the moment, I am reading a part-binary, part-ascii file(s) and needing to process them (extract their data). I have need to read characters, as well as read in "binary" numbers, and print the whole lot out as ascii, with delimiters, etc (I use a mini-program/ format-string as a 'driver' to specify to my program how to process the input). I eventually realised (after converting my code back and fort between iterator style and istream style) that in fact I need both an istream and an input iterator (conveinence factor here). So firstly, I created both an istringstream, and an istream_iterator over that istringstream. Using either to .get or >> extract stuff from my string/stream would advance the underlying buffer, so things seem to work out well. I then decided to combine the two into a single class, which I can then "hide" implementation details or add functionality (eg. manipulators to specify byte-oirdering, endianness, etc), and still have one nice big interface of stream + iterator to get stuff from. My question is, why did this initial cut not compile: using namespace std; class istringtraverser : public istringstream, public istream_iterator<char> { public: istringtraverser(string s) : istringstream(s), istream_iterator<char>(*this) {} }; While this one DOES compile: using namespace std; class istringtraverser : public istringstream, public istream_iterator<char> { istringstream* miss; public: istringtraverser(string s) : istringstream(s), miss(this), istream_iterator<char>(*miss) {} }; And, how can I instantiate my traverser without it segfaulting? Eg., on my debian box, "istringtraverser st(some_string);" compiles but segfaults. Any insight appreciated, Zenaan PS I'm a Java programmer learning C++, finding out that C++ is more powerful/ featureful, yet some simple things (eg. uppercase a std::string, using std::transform with std::toupper) just do not work as expected. I can see why they now teach Java as a first language at Uni.

I am using VS.Net 2003. Any ideas on what I am missing. As well can I get my cake and eat it to by making the CheckFunc virtual and have it resolve to the derived form? Hi! I would like to reverse all the edges of a graphviz graph but the structure of this kind of graph doesn't seems to fit with the one use by the reverse_graph functionalities. Am I true or did I forget something? Regex and stream processing

I come here to get an advice and here is my problem: We have a stream of text data (actually it is a chunked response of a webserver, but it might be a file or something...) The data size may be very large and we need to do some find/replace in this stream using regular expressions. It is not possible to load entire stream into the memory. I'm not even hope that Regex++ could work with such kind of streams, but maybe someone can suggest me a solution to this problem? regex compile problem with vc6 and stlport

I am using MSVC6 (sp5) with STLport v4.5.3 and attempting to compile boost::regex v3.31, as far as I know these are the latest versions/updates. I dutifully followed the installation instructions, but `nmake -fvc6-stlport.mak` died with the error: ../src/cpp_regex_traits.cpp(662) : error C2660: 'isspace' function does not take 2 parameters By building the files in the IDE, I was able to figure out why the isspace error happens: there is a global scope isspace() defined in ctype.h. The isspace problem can be fixed by defining BOOST_REGEX_STD to be std:: (in other words, getting rid of the old STLport isspace workaround). But with that done, I now get a number of linking errors when I try to build the library using nmake (though I have been able to compile .dlls via the IDE). By manually adding stlport_vc6.lib to the list of linked libraries, I can get rid of all reported linking errors, but the dll's are still failing to compile. Has anyone else using STLport v4.5.3 and regex 3.31 (boost dist 1.30.2) gotten the library to compile under MSVC6? At this point I may try compiling the dlls by hand through the IDE, but it seems like there ought to be a way to get nmake working... Thanks, Sven PS- I should probably admit that this is my first time trying to compile regex using STLport, so it's quite possible that there is some silly little thing that I am doing wrong... I have tried setting the include and lib paths both manually and using the STLPORT_PATH environment variable (C:\STLport-4.5.3 in my case), and I get the same results either way.

Icompatibility between MS cl preprocessor and boost macro constructs

Hi, the header files boost/iterator_adaptors.hpp and boost/regex/v3/instances.hpp contain macro constructs that are icompatible with the Microsoft compiler cl when using them in a source file, preprocessing the source to a another source file and afterwards compiling the preprocessed source file. For iterator_adaptors.hpp, cl version 13.00 is affected, for instances.hpp cl 13.00 and 13.10. The problem can be reproduced by compiling the following simple source file (test.cpp) in the base boost directory (boost-1.30.2): #include "boost/iterator_adaptors.hpp" #include "boost/regex.hpp" int main(void) { return 0; } The commandline to preprocess the file is: cl /TP /GX /EHsc /Zc:wchar_t /Zc:forScope /c /I. /P test.cpp The commandline to compile the previously preprocessed file is: cl /TP /GX /EHsc /Zc:wchar_t /Zc:forScope /c /I. test.i Note that when directly compiling the same test program using the following commandline the problem disappears: cl /TP /GX /EHsc /Zc:wchar_t /Zc:forScope /c /I. test.cpp One might expect that the last command line should produce the same result as the first two, but unfortunately this is not the case. I have attached a patch file that solves the icompatibility with the preprocessor by incorporating the following changes: - In instances.hpp the patch adds single spaces between the BOOST_DEFAULT_ALLOCATOR and the end of some template declarations. - In iterator_adaptors.hpp the conditional BOOST_WORKAROUND macros are refactored from inside the template declarations of indirect_iterator_generator and indirect_iterator_pair_generator to the front of them by duplicating the template struct definitions minus the BOOST_WORKAROUND code in the else branch of the conditional macro. In case you wonder why we need to preprocess the source file into a seperate file before compiling it: This is required to use distcc (http://distcc.samba.org) with Microsofts cl. Is there a chance this patch gets accepted for the next boost version? boost::TokenizerFunction

TokenizerFunction "Expression Semantics" table (documentation - eg. on debian: /usr/share/doc/libboost-doc/HTML/libs/tokenizer/index.htm), states that "tok is constructed", as part of "Precondition". However I note two things: 1: on looking at the source code for the provided example functions, each constructs a Token as it's first (or second) line of code in the call to operator(). 2: the "Semantics" says "The return value [bool] indicates whether a new token was found in the sequence". If there is no token available (eg. we are already at end of stream(/string) and will return false) why waste effort constructing storage for a token? Why does the doco say that the token must be constructed as a precondition? Is the code wrong, or the doco - ie. should my custom function construct a new (empty) token, or follow doco and have user construct one? It would seem potentially more efficient for the user to construct one, as they may be reused. I am trying to use (my own custom) function directly, in a for loop. Why would I use tokenizer class to wrap it? There is no example on using a function directly, thus these string of questions which I would like some answers on. The documentation for TokenizerFunction doesn't seem to have a proper doxygen-like api description - at least not on my local debian installation. So I have to revert to the source. As I'm a newbie, it is requiring quite a bit of going back and forth to try and figure it all out - eg., should I use a tokenizer (container), token_iterator, or just for-loop on a specific (custom) tokenizer function?? Finally, as I've been trying to figure out how to write my own TokenizerFunction. Delving into the code for the example TFs has eventually led me there, but a simpler example in the documentation would be very useful for other newbies, I'm sure. - I know, I should post the code. Well, I'm not done yet, and I'm implementing a function I need specifically, as opposed to just for learning or doco, but perhaps later in the week I can send something along if no one beats me to it. Once I understand it all a bit better. Simple one-hit functions can be a good way to learn how to code what you need (ie. not templatized). Q: exceptions and -fPIC

Hi, I am on the following platform: Linux 2.6.0-test5 #11 Wed Sep 10 20:28:31 CEST 2003 i686 unknown Reading specs from /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-slackware-linux/3.2.2/specs Configured with: ../gcc-3.2.2/configure --prefix=/usr --enable-shared --enable-threads=posix --enable-__cxa_atexit --disable-checking --with-gnu-ld --verbose --target=i386-slackware-linux --host=i386-slackware-linux Thread model: posix gcc version 3.2.2 Boost version 1.30.2 compiled with: bjam "-sTOOLS=gcc" I have a question regarding the following boost::filesystem use case: try { for(fs::directory_iterator dir_itr(full_path); dir_itr != end_iter; ++dir_itr ) { // use dir_itr } } catch(const std::exception &ex) { std::cout << ex.what() << std::endl; } In case of full_path pointed to the directory without read permissions the corresponding exception is thrown and catched in the catch block. My problem is that if I compile my application with -fPIC option, I am unable to catch the exception anymore and the program is simply aborted. I need to use -fPIC because of other library which has own build system and if I follow suggested guidlines for Makefile, I get -fPIC automatically. I would verry appreciate if somebody could tell me are there any ways to make the code mentioned above work when it is compiled with -fPIC? Should I recompile boost with -fPIC? If yes, what is the right place to set this parameter? BTW how it is supposed to write a shared library which includes boost code? As I understand, than my code must be compiled with -fPIC... Boost.Python - implementing slicing on extension container class

I'm currently writing a set of container classes using Boost.Python to wrap an existing C++ library. Progress has been very good - not even two days and I've wrapped all the existing C++ methods (at least 100). But of course a library designed for C++ is not a library designed for Python. Job 2 is to make it more Pythonic. The current problem is implementing slicing in the __getitem__, __setitem__ and __delitem__ methods. These are already working with single keys. To handle slicing, I need to identify in the key object is a slice object. This is the sticking point right now. I can access the type of the object using p.attr ("__class__") - but how do I get access to the slice type object from __builtins__ in order to compare? I could probably use a workaround such as extracting and checking a string representation from p.attr ("__class__").str (), but it seems to me that the ability to import symbols from another module (whether __builtins__ or some other Python or extension module). This could reduce to the ability to convert a PyObject* to an object instance - even more useful for using any C API functions that don't have a Boost.Python wrapper - but there seems to be no obvious way to do this. In addition, my containers are currently declared as follows... class_<classname, boost::noncopyable>("classname") ... ; The boost::noncopyable is there because the containers don't have copy constructors due to certain issues using the library in C++. Therefore, I'd like to better understand the implications of this. For instance, in Python the copy constructor is often used to make copy the entire container (as opposed to just rebinding names). Presumably Boost.Python supports this using the C++ classes copy constructor. This raises the questions... 1. How can I create an object to return to Python, containing an instance of the C++ container, without removing boost::noncopyable? (I need to do this to implement slicing too) This, I think, is roughly what is done in the Inheritance section of the tutorial so I probably need something like the 'factory' function. So, to reduce it to a simple copy-function example, the following should be about right... Base* container::make_copy () { container *temp = new container (); temp->do_copy (*this); return temp; } ... .def("make_copy", container::make_copy, return_value_policy<manage_new_object>()) I think this should be right, but confidence is low. 2. How can I support the Python copy constructor without having a C++ copy constructor. I'm using boost-1.30.2 with Python 2.2.3 and Visual Studio 7. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Bug in boost::format with 0 valued integer

Hi folks, There appears to be a bug in boost::format, an unitialized value problem spotted when I was using valgrind on a program of mine. I've tended to rely on the common sense of the user (after all i cannot detect other possible errors such as 'oend < obegin') but i suppose the following addition at the start would seem sensible: ASSERT(obegin != oend); As for your second point - the amount of time saved by 'the former behaviour' depends on how expensive the predicate is and how many times it will be called if no more satisfactory items are available. As the entries in the output buffer are overwritten as and when required there is no need in any general sense to clear it between calls and this surely obviates any advantage your proposed approach may have. Does boost have an implementation of copy_if that I can't find yet? Just wondering, because it is an algorithm that, according to both stroustrup and o'rielly, should have been part of the standard but was essentially accidentally forgotten. Surely this (and possibly other necessary additions) would be part of an boost algorithm library, even if only one or two functions... I need copy_if, both these books I have say it's one of "the first generic algorithm that most programmers will probably write", so where is it? ??? (Yes, I can type it in, but boost is supposed to fill in the blanks, yes?) tia zen

boost::char_separator enhancement (or, how do I do it myself)

I'm teaching myself C++, and want to tokenize my stream, using boost::tokenizer. I want to be able to optionally tokenize with or without including the delimiter character - this is supported. However: the delimiter character, if included, becomes its own token. I want an option to have the delimiter character be part of the previous token (which is what makes sense for the processing I am doing on my files). ??? ta zen

Boost's pool implementation

First off, I think the Boost pool is a great tool and for me has been one of the most useful of Boost's libraries. I have run into a problem however, due to the pool's usage of "malloc" and "free" as the names of functions. The problem is that I want to debug memory usage in my program and catch memory leaks, but using the leak detection in Visual Studio 7.1 for the CRT creates a macro for malloc and free, which conflicts with the pool's malloc and free and makes a general mess. Is there any better memory debug library/tools out there that are free and can get the line/file that the memory allocation occurred and the size perhaps and possibly a portion of the contained data as a character string? Perhaps I could write up a patch to rename the malloc and free from the boost pool [though I see that would be quite a pain to the existing users of boost's pool since code would have to be rewritten with whatever function is added]. boost::pool base class new override

hi first question: where on earth was boost while I was doing my last year project? just thinking of the amount of trouble I could have saved if I knew about it... makes me bang my head against several walls ;) Well, I starter looking towards memory managment with other eyes after 90% of my bugs being directly originated form it. So after looking on the boost memory library a question popped: how can I use smart pointers and pool toguether. In particular intrusive pointers and/or pool, being the "and/or" essencial. If i have class C all made and ready and now I want it work with smart pointers i just have to make a base class RefCount, use multiple inheritance to contruct C_RC and i can have both things. Problem is, now i want to use it in pool too, but my base class RefCount calls delete. My solution; make yet another base class Poolable and override new and delete there. Well to my surprise it worked but only in very special cases. I have to use pool<> and cant use object_pool<C_RC_P> it crashes. Also it only works in MSVC6 in Release, in Debug it crashes. In a nutshell, my questions: - Is object_pool->malloc / free diferent in semantics from pool->malloc / free ? - I dont mind using pool<> but doing pool<>(sizeof(C_RC_P)) isnt that typesafe, can I make it? - Why does it crash in debug ? 2D Shared Array

Hi, Is it possible to build a shared_array of shared_arrays? I would imagine there must be away, but I haven't been so successful at my attempts to find it :-/ I'm working on converting an existing project over to the boost smart pointer library. We've been using dynamically allocated 2D arrays to hold points in a matrix, and would like to take advantage of the automatic clean-up that the boost smart pointers can provide. That's why I would like to make a shared_array of shared_arrays of some data type. Any help would be appreciated. And if I'm approaching this all wrong, please let me know. I'm open to suggestions for other ideas, so long as the individual points can still be referenced in the form of: point[row][col]. Thanks, Kevin

I've noticed that in boost/config/platform/hpux.hpp this lines: #ifdef __GNUC__ // GNU C on HP-UX does not support threads (checked up to gcc 3.3) # define BOOST_DISABLE_THREADS #endif have been added in version 1.30.x. Please, ¿can someone explain me why? I have commented out the #define BOOST_DISABLE_THREADS and it works in gcc 3.2 with HP-UX 11.00. Boost.Python: is my code safe?

I have a question regarding the use of Boost.Python. What I would like to do is to provide a simple scripting interface to an application in much the same way as Microsoft use Visual Basic within much of their product line (e.g. Excel) to provide direct access to the applications object model. My design is stunningly rendered below, +-------------------------+ | Application--+ | | | | Dynamically +---------------+ | v | Linked | Python Module | | +--->ObjectModel<------------------| | | | | +---------------+ | +---------------------+ | | | | Python Interpretter |<----------------------+ | | | | ">>> import ..." | +---------------------+ | +-------------------------+ What we have firstly is a our python module, in this case it exports a simple class 'ObjectModel' with various functions, sub objects and whatever else is required for the application to run. This is our Object Model, and is usable from the python interpretter on the command line. For what we have in mind however is for the python interpretter to be running inside the application (through use of the Py* functions from the python API and use of the relevant parts of Boost.Python - handle<>, object). What I want is for the application and the python instance to share the object model, for the interpretter to have knowledge of the ObjectModel it is simply imported from the python module. The application itself is linked against the python module in order to use ObjectModel (the relevant compiler specific code is inserted so that the ObjectModel class is exported/imported - __declspec(dllexport) and dllimport under Visual C++). With this setup, it is now possible to create an instance of ObjectModel within the python interpretter and use extract<ObjectModel*>(...) in order to get access to it within the application, no doubt it is also possible to create the ObjectModel within the application and pass it to the python interpretter to use it there. Now my question basically regards pitfalls in this approach, there are two instances of the Python Module in use here but I'm sure that as long as care is taken to ensure the ObjectModel is destructed on the same heap that it was created on then there shall be no problems. Is there any other, possibly better way to do this perhaps - e.g. without requiring the use of the module at all, simply passing the Boost.Python class descriptions directly to the embedded interpretter. A simple test harness I have /appears/ to work fine with the above design. win32.hpp has a using std::max, min

win32.hpp has using std::min and using std::max directives. (win32.hpp in fact overrides these functions). These directives hinder use of the max function elsewhere in a client program, for example, by #included c libraries, which are expecting to use the global (non overridden) max function. Indeed, Sutter's More Exceptional C++ #40 (p. 236) asserts that using directives/declerations should never appear in any headers (certainly not at file scope!). Will this be removed in future releases?

Building Boost with Intel compiler 7.0 and STLPort on windows

Hello. Does anyone know whether it is currently possible to use Boost with the Intel Compiler v7.0 and the latest STLport, in windows? It seems I still have to hack files in date_time/posix_time (specifically time_formatters.hpp), to reduce my compile errors. Like defining BOOST_MSVC and then undeffing it, before line 43 of this file is processed. Otherwise I get ambigious operator definitions. Also, is it possible to actually build the date_time library with the Intel compiler and STLport at the same time? Why is there a msvc-stlport toolset but no intel-stlport toolset? O; another thing. Has anyone perhaps built boost in MSYS before? If MSVC + Intel setup is giving me too much hassle, I am going to try and build boost in MSYS. Greetings, Andre

What's the proper way to use lambda with smart pointers? Hi. I get the following error when compiling the latest version of boost, using Intel compiler 7.0 in visual c++: ..\..\..\boost\boost/type_traits/is_integral.hpp(39): error: class "boost::is_integral<unsigned short>" has already been defined BOOST_TT_AUX_BOOL_TRAIT_CV_SPEC1(is_integral,wchar_t,true) Now the offending line sits between a "#ifndef BOOST_NO_INTRINSIC_WCHAR_T". The simple fix of defining BOOST_NO_INTRINSIC_WCHAR_T solves this problem, but causes other problems in other locations. All I want is to compile and link against boost::date_time library, using my compiler setup. Thats all. Any suggestions? Greetings, Andre

is this what you had in mind?? I've considered this from time to time (first time I've formalized it tho) especially thinking of alternatives to the 3 delimiter arguments (substitute one? Hi, I have encountered a problem with pyste and incomplete types. [BGL] adjacency property iterator

Hi Is there an adjancency iterator for property types. You can get an iterator for property types like this: typedef graph_property_iter_range<GraphType, vertex_name_t>::iterator VNameIterator; .... tie(It, ItEnd) = get_property_iter_range(m_Graph, vertex_name); I'd like to know if there is something similar for adjacency iterators. using boost::mem_fn result as a parameter?

I'm new to boost::bind and boost::mem_fn. I've read the documentation and I think I understand what they do, but I'm not sure how to use them to accomplish my task. I have a class that contains several vectors in a map. I want to put a "foreach" method on the class that will callback an arbitrary member function, of an arbitrary class, for each item in the vector. I'm stuck on the signature of that method. A quick sketch of the structure: class VectorContent { public: void dosomething(); // there are bunches more, which is why I don't // want a foreach for every possible choice. }; class VectorHolder { std::map<std::string, std::vector<VectorContent> >; std::vector<VectorContent>& rvectGet(const std::string& rksName); public: void foreach( const std::string& rksName, <WHAT?> ); }; // the callback Caller::Bar( VectorContent& vc ) { vc.dosomething(); } I see two options for the caller: // option 1 Caller::Foo1() { VectorHolder callee; // in this case, foreach uses boost::mem_fn(), not me callee.foreach( "VectorName", &this::Bar ); } // option 2 Caller::Foo2(); { VectorHolder callee; callee.foreach( "VectorName", boost::mem_fn(&this::Bar) ); } In the case of option 1, all callers must share a common base class, which they do NOT, so that the signature of VectorHolder::foreach can be: typedef void (BaseClass::* MyCallBack)(VectorContent&); Leading to: void VectorHolder::foreach( const std::string& rsName, MyCallBack callback ) { std::vector<VectorContent>& rvect = rvectGet( rsName ); std::for_each( rvect.begin(), rvect.end(), boost::mem_fn(callback) ); } In the case of option 2, I have no idea what the signature should be. But the resulting method would be: void VectorHolder::foreach( std::string& rsName, WHAT? callback ) { std::vector<VectorContent>& rvect = rvectGet( rsName ); std::for_each( rvect.begin(), rvect.end(), callback ); } Grateful for any help, - Mark P.S.
