boost::thread_group design flaw

I'm pretty convinced that there is a serious design flaw in boost::thread_group or at the very minimum, the documentation should better address the issue. Let's take a look at the thread_group.cpp example provided with boost::thread: #include <boost/thread/thread.hpp> #include <iostream> int count = 0; boost::mutex mutex; void increment_count() { boost::mutex::scoped_lock lock(mutex); std::cout << "count = " << ++count << std::endl; } int main(int argc, char* argv[]) { boost::thread_group threads; for (int i = 0; i < 10; ++i) threads.create_thread(&increment_count); threads.join_all(); } This example works fine until I make the following small change to main() which breaks it: int main(int argc, char* argv[]) { boost::thread_group threads; for (int j = 0; j < 2; ++i) { for (int i = 0; i < 10; ++i) threads.create_thread(&increment_count); threads.join_all(); } } The above code will break the second time threads.join_all() is called. The problem is that all boost::thread objects created in the first iteration survive the join_all() call. Worse still, the 2nd join_all() call sends another join() message to each thread it created but boost::thread::join() does not check the m_joinable flag and simply tries to free the system resources it previously freed again causing a system fault. To correct the problem above, I can change the code as follows: int main(int argc, char* argv[]) { boost::thread* pt[10]; boost::thread_group threads; for (int j = 0; j < 2; ++i) { for (int i = 0; i < 10; ++i) pt[i] = threads.create_thread(&increment_count); threads.join_all(); for (int i = 0; i < 10; ++i) threads.remove_thread(pt[i]); } } While this code no longer causes a GPF, I do not believe that the boost::thread objects created by boost::thread_group::create_thread() actually ever get destroyed. I have set a break point in boost::thread::~thread() but this breakpoint is never reached. If I physically delete each pt[i] after removing it from the thread_group I'm getting an assertion error telling me that the pointer I'm trying to delete is not a valid debug-heap pointer, but this error will most likely disappear if I stop using the debug heap (I haven't tried yet). As a boost::thread_group user, I made the following assumptions: - a boost::thread created through boost::thread_group::create_thread will be removed and cleaned up properly when a) the thread terminates or b) the thread_group is deleted - after returning from a call to join_all() the boost::thread_group has no boost::thread object members - I need not specifically keep track of boost::thread objects created by boost::thread_group and destruction of these objects is encapsulated within boost::thread_group I now find that none of these assumptions is quite correct. Perhaps I good immediate remedy would be to implement a boost::thread_group::clear() method which would throw an error if any of the threads where still in a running state and else would clear its threads collection and destroy the objects? How about thread objects "remembering" their membership in a thread_group so that the thread group can be informed when a thread terminates?

I'm having a problem with my boost multithreaded application. My app runs fine as a Windows Service, but as a Unix daemon it stops responding after some time. I noticed that the fewer threads I have available, the quicker the application stops responding: HP-UX(64) after 20mins, RH8(256) after >1hr, Linux RH9(1024) >5hrs. This led me to assume that perhaps the threads are not cleaned up properly. Therefore, I wrote a little test app which ought to demonstrate the problem. To my surprise, the test application showed an entirely different problem, but again, only under Unix (it works as expected under Windows). I'm totally lost what the reason is and appreciate any help. Expected: Actual: --------------- --------------- Start running Start running Start swimming Finish running Start cycling Start swimming Finish swimming Finish swimming Finish cycling Start cycling Finish running Finish cycling In windows I get the actual output but under Linux RH9, I get the Actual output. Under RH9, the first five lines of the actual output appear immediately, but the last one takes approx. 4secs. General problem on compiling a boost regex code...

Hello, I'm using the boost library for the first time, and I get a compiler error. :-( I don't know why, because I think the boost library is installed successful (I have tested the SuSE rpm file and the download version from boost.org) I'm using gcc 3.x and boost 1.30 on SuSE Linux 9.0... random library fibonacci bug

There seems to be a bug in the fibonacci random generators. Only the smaller lagged_fibonacci generators work. Code Sample (tested with VC7.1) follows. Actually, I came into the same problem as Jim - I had to ensure the same version of the msvcrt and moreover its debug/release versions to get the code working well. All classes in checked_delete.hpp, smart_count.hpp and shared_ptr.hpp are either templates or completely in headers. The operations with new/delete and allocators are translated/inlined by the compiler into every unit, IMHO. I could not find the trick in the implementation, how to force the deletion of the pointer by the same runtime, if new() was performed in one DLL and delete() in another one. Newbie Q: Boost Graph stuff

Hi everyone, I have a question concerning the Boost Graph library, specifically with strongly connected components. My problem is this: I have a graph that I need to collapse into strongly connected components, then topologically sort the resulting DAG of components. Then I want to traverse the sorted DAG (in order), and for each component (now just a vertex I guess), look up into the original graph to find all the vertices that belong to this component. The application here is a rigid body simulator, and I'm constructing a graph of contact points between bodies. The idea is to find an ordering to apply collision impulses, which logically means from the ground up. Vertices are thus bodies, and edges denote a contact (collision) case. I've constructed the original graph, and using the example online, performed the strong_components algorithm on it. However, I'm unsure of how to correctly create a graph of the components. I presume using the root_map is somehow involved, but I'm kind of at a loss. BUG: boost::lexical_cast ignores virtual functions.

I found that when I call boost::lexical_cast<std::string>() with an object that has virtual functions, it fails to dereference the virtual functions. It also cannot use an Abstract base type. Attached is example code. I think the problem is simply that the file boost/lexical_cast.hpp, on line 185 has: Target lexical_cast(Source arg) This should be Target lexical_cast(Source& arg) At least, this fixes all of my problems. Problems building Boost

I've downloaded Boost 1.31.0 and tried to build it using the standard bjam procedure from the getting started document. I have WinXP/Home and the standard edition of VC7.1 (.NET 2003). I've tried both the vc7.1 and the vc7.1-stlport toolsets. In both cases the following libraries are generated: boost_date_time boost_filesystem boost_signals boost_thread libbost_date_time libbost_prg_exec_monitor libbost_regex libbost_signals libbost_test_exec_monitor libbost_unit_test_framework During the build process I get compiler warnings because the standard version of VC won't do advanced optimizations, but otherwise there seems to be no problem. Bjam stops after having generated the above libraries. Shouldn't there be more? What's the difference between those starting with boost and those starting with libboost? Do I have to somehow generate the remaining libraries separately? Thanks!

There are a couple of more or less complete implementations laying around: * http://tinyurl.com/2qrpq, 'rational_c' implementation by Hugo Duncan; * http://tinyurl.com/39mjl, "static_rational.hpp" by Matthias Schabel (it's a part of YANL, his dimensional analysis library). The main reason one of them is not in the library yet is that their notation for arithmetic operations leaves something to be desired -- you have to write something like rational_plus<r1,r2> instead of mpl::plus<r1,r2> Besides this issue, AFAIK these are already usable. Of course, if you would like to improve them/contribute more optimal/clean/better in any other regard implementation, please do. As for 'fixed_c', I am not aware of any publicly available implementation. date_time formatting compilation error

I'm trying to convert a gregorian::date to a string, as shown in the following code: // Build: cl /EHsc /I \CVS\boost dt.cpp #include <iostream> #include <boost/date_time/gregorian/gregorian.hpp> int main() { boost::gregorian::date today(2004, boost::gregorian::Mar, 14); std::cout << today << std::endl; return 0; } When I compile it with Visual C++ 7.1, using Boost from CVS head, I get the following error: \CVS\boost\boost\lexical_cast.hpp(150) : error C2679: binary '>>' : no operator found which takes a right-hand operand of type 'boost::date_time::date_formatter <date_type,format_type,charT>::string_type' (or there is no acceptable conversion) with [ date_type=boost::gregorian::date, format_type=boost::date_time::simple_format, charT=wchar_t ] The same thing happens when using to_simple_string and to_simple_string_type<char>, rather than operator<<. I actually want the result as a basic_string<wchar_t>, but all variations produce this same error. What am I doing wrong? Thanks, Keith MacDonald

A couple of days ago I started work on a library where I need a way to represent rational numbers and fixed point precision numbers at compile time, so I started creating a compile-time rational number type following the style of integral_c in boost::mpl. After completing most operations, I notices that in the mpl/math directory there were already the beginnings of rational_c and fixed_c types, however, they are far from complete (in rational_c there are just two static constants for numerator and denominator and a self typedef, with no specialized operations). Are these types still in development or are they abandoned? I'd like to continue my project using mpl::rational_c and mpl::fixed_c as I need to make them work with the mpl integral constants anyways. So is development on these templates halted, meaning I should just go ahead and finish my types, or are the types coming soon enough so I just should just hold off and wait for the cavalry to arrive?

Heollo, guys, I try to wrap a c++ extension class requiring qt lib through boost.python, I failed always because of the following error: c:\Python23\include\object.h(343): error C2059: syntax error : ';' My code will link to qt-2.30nc lib (window version). I have seen the similar problem, when I built it using intel-win32. I would suggest you to check regex\user.hpp. There are a couple of macros need to be set for win32 dll. I am not sure what is the proper setting. I've been using it successfully across DLL boundaries with no problems. The biggest caveat is to ensure you are using the DLL version of the C Runtime library. Is there any problem with using shared_ptr and passing an instance of it to a function in another shared library, such as a DLL under Windows ? Does the reference count get updated correctly when the copy is passed to a DLL function, so that when the last shared_ptr in either the original module or the DLL goers out of scope, the actual pointer is correctly deleted ? If this is not the case, that shared_ptr works correctly across DLL boundaries in the manner described, does instantiating and exporting shared_ptr template instances from the DLL to the module using the DLL solve the problem ?

boost::thread no parameter?

Greetings, I'm wondering why there is no option to pass a parameter to a thread function with boost's threads. With pthreads and Windows CreateThread I'm used to casting an object to a void*, and retrieving the object within the thread function. The only thing similar with boost::thread seems to be to create a struct with an operator()() and a constructor that takes a void*. operator()() then calls an external function with the passed void*. Hi Hossein, I know that Spirit can be used for scanning and lexical analysis, at least that where I use it for. I don't know about the rest, but I guess Spirit will help you out there too. In my little project I use it for parsing XML, HTML and other datafiles. For more info on spirit : http://spirit.sourceforge.net/ If you need a C/C++ parser, you might consider Wave, which uses Spirit, and is highly standard compliant. Graph, inv_adjacency_iterator_generator problem

Hi, I have a problem with traversing over all parents of a vertex. If I use (the undocumented?) inv_adjacency_iterator_generator class to return iterators for the parents (predecessors) of a vertex I get a compile error. It worked on an earlier version of the library (in debian testing), but does not work for the latest version(1.31.0). I think the problem is that it can no longer find a suitable constructor. mpl lambda facilities

I'm trying to create a metafunction which takes in a boost::mpl::vector containing spirit parser types, and yields a vector of the original vector's length plus one with each element representing the parser type made of the recursive boost::spirit::alternative of all of the original parser types from the corresponding element in the original vector and an epsilon_parser at the end. in other words, the metafunction should be able to take in: (using boost::mpl and boost::spirit) vector< chlit<>, strlit<>, range<> > and yield a result: vector< alternative< chlit<>, alternative< strlit<>, alternative< range<>, epsilon_parser > > >, alternative< strlit<>, alternative< range<>, epsilon_parser > >, alternative< range<>, epsilon_parser >, epsilon_parser > where empty is my own parser type, similar to epsilon_parser I'm still new to metaprogramming and the mpl lambda facilities and I'm having some trouble creating a metafunction which produces my desired type. I downloaded the latest version of Python from the website given below and ran it with "rpm --rebuild python2-2.2-2.src.rpm." Python seems to install correctly. I reset my env variables to PYTHON_ROOT=/usr and PYTHON_VERSION=2.2. Yet when I ran bjam, it would say it couldn't find the Python.h file within /usr/include/python2.2/. The directory is there, but its empty. There is an another directory for python1.5. But this version will not compile Boost correctly. Any suggestions or idea of why this is happening? Thanks. Mac OS X link problem

I am using the Boost libraries, specifically the Spirit portions, on Mac OS X Panther, using XCode. Every time I try to compile my program with the Boost libraries I get a linker error: ld: warning prebinding disabled because of undefined symbols ld: Undefined symbols: boost::throw_exception(std::exception const&) Even if I link against all the boost libraries that were created, I still can't get this program to link. The documentation talks about the libraries being compiled with or without BOOST_NO_EXCEPTIONS, but they don't indicate that the program won't link in either case. What am I doing wrong? ahp

The following useful Perl expressions seem to have been omitted from regex_format: \l lowercase next char \u uppercase next char \L lowercase till \E \U uppercase till \E \E end case modification Was there a good reason for that? The only way I can see to implement those expressions is to take a copy of regex_format.hpp, then hack _reg_format_aux. Futures revisited

Hello, During discussions on possible extensions to Boost.Threads, concept of Futures came up rather frequently. Below, I’d like to introduce a particular implementation available at www.rhapsodia.org of which requirements were defined as follows: 1. Provide means to register exception types with a "Future Registry". Rationale: I find it imperative that users should not have to define a list of exception types on each invocation yielding a Future object. Instead, provide the ability to register exception types with a Future Registry and bundle it with Future objects. I feel that compile time registration should be sufficient. 2. Work under the assumption that asynchronous invocations returning Futures and system threads are not coupled. In particular, Futures implementation should not relay on joining with a particular thread to perform synchronization for returning results. Rationale: Although most prevalent, the technique of joining with a particular thread to synchronize on returning result is too limiting. It implies that each task be run on a dedicated thread, specially created to handle it and destroyed to meet with a caller using a Future. Although this approach may be adequate under certain conditions, it generally tends to be expensive on system resources and disorganizes the application. For example, it’s impossible to control the number of concurrently running threads. It may also perform poorly if executed code happens to run shortly as the overhead of creating a thread and cleaning up after it may be significant. More robust approach is to use a queue and a thread pool for running tasks. This adds complexity on the synchronization side, as we can no longer rely on a lifetime of a thread to join with Future’s result. 3. Ability to utilize Futures with arbitrary code without explicit support for them. Rationale: For implementation to be widely adopted, it should be possible to turn just about any function call into a Future-armored asynchronous invocation. No explicit thread synchronization primitives should be used as well. 4. Implement using existing Boost.Threads facilities only. Rationale: Boost.Threads library provides enough support to implement Futures paradigm that meets requirements listed here. 5. STL and Boost compatible. For example, storing Futures in an STL container. Be strongly typed. Futures implementation and usage patterns must naturally coexist with STL and Boost code. Constructor in for adjacency_matrix missing?

Hello, since some weeks I'm using the BGL. It's really a great library. But I'm a bit confused about the documentation for the template class adjacency_matrix. According to the BGL-book and also the online documentation there should be three constructors for adjacency_matrix: adjacency_matrix(vertices_size_type n, const GraphProperty& p = GraphProperty()) template <typename EdgeIterator> adjacency_matrix(EdgeIterator first, EdgeIterator last, vertices_size_type n, const GraphProperty& p = GraphProperty()) and template <typename EdgeIterator, typename EdgePropertyIterator> adjacency_matrix(EdgeIterator first, EdgeIterator last, EdgePropertyIterator ep_iter, vertices_size_type n, const GraphProperty& p = GraphProperty()) but actually in boost/graph/adjacency_matrix.hpp is only the constructor adjacency_matrix(vertices_size_type n_vertices) is defined. So it's not possible to construct an adjacency_matrix from a pair of iterators (as it is possible for adjacency_list). Has this constructor been removed or never been implemented? Such a constructor would be very useful for me. Where is the jam_src Makefile?

Hi, I am trying to compile a bjam executable from scratch (under Linux). In the file: boost_1_31_0/tools/build/jam_src/README it says: The Makefile (UNIX, NT), build.com (VMS), Build.mpw (Mac MPW) are for bootstrapping. Once jam is built, it can rebuild itself. But I can't find the Makefile anywhere! It is not in that directory, and I can't find it anywhere else? Am I blind, or is it missing? Thanks, Mark.

Hey all, My need is to combine a program I've written with some linear algebra. I can generally do most basic tasks in C/C++, but not yet derived classes and the like. Anyway, not wanting to reinvent the wheel, my searches revealed that 'boost' might be a good source of code for some math functions I will need, essentially matrix operations. I read the getting started page http://boost.org/more/getting_started.html, all I managed to do was run the batch file in the tools/build folder, but I don't think this installed any libraries, or if it did, it didn't put them where I need them..I don't have much experience working from the command line in Windows. Boost looks good, can anyone help me get started? Thanks, Matt

Hi, I have not been able to build version 1.31.0. I run bjam -sTOOLS=gcc-nocygwin Basically, I get a lot of undefined references from the linker. lambda / boost usage questions

hello, I don't have much experience with boost, so I'm having problems getting boost lambda to work...hope someone here can point me in the right direction. I have: class Song {public: string artist( ) const { return m_artist } string title( ) const { return m_title } private: string m_artist, m_title; } typedef boost::shared_ptr<Song> pSong; vector<pSong> c; and I am trying to use lambda to find a song in c which matches a certain artist and title...something like iterator it = find_if( c.begin(), c.end(), something ) but I havn't figured out what "something" should look like I've tried find_if(begin(),end(), (_1->artist() == "a1" && _1->title = "t1" ) ); but the compiler -- or I =) -- doesn't seem to know the type of _1 --> error: base operand of `->' has non-pointer type `const boost::lambda::lambda_functor<boost::lambda::placeholder<1> >' If I try it = find_if(begin(),end(), boost::bind(&Song::artist,_1) == "a1" ); it fails because "_1" is ambiguos (defined as lambda/placeholder and boost/arg ) using boost::lambda::bind (and not including the "normal" bind ) gives a bunch cryptic errors... I've tried several other variants with lambda / lambda::bind / boost::bind but I havn't figured it out... can anyone help me out? I'd also like to know what's the difference between boost::bind and boost::lambda::bind ? Also... is there a way to know when a lambda object is going to be constructed?, it's probably just that I don't know much about the BLL, but in cases where you have several nested lambdas and binds, I'm not sure which lambda objects will get constructed. regards, luis

Hello, I am seeing a bug that the regression tests miss for numeric_cast<unsigned long> with gcc 3.3.2. Specifically, the following code is throwing an exception: double small_value = 1.25; unsigned long l=0; l = numeric_cast<unsigned long>(small_value); // throws exception! unsinged char c=0; c = numeric_cast<unsigned char>(small_value); // throws exception! I am under the impression that numeric_cast is supposed to accept losses of precision (by truncating the fractional values), and to throw exceptions only if there is a range or sign error. Is this so? This error happens only when I try to cast a value with a non-zero fraction; i.e. 1.25 breaks but 1.0 is fine. It only occurs for unsigned types -- signed int, char, and long appear to work correctly. I have found the same incorrect behavior with gcc 3.3.2 on both solaris and linux. Using sunpro on solaris, the same code runs correctly. The regression tests don't catch this, since they only test numeric_cast with integral values 1 and LONG_MAX. Any ideas? Boost.Test and Threads

Hi After our migration from Boost 1.30.2 to Boost 1.31.0 several multithreaded tests no longer work stable. We tracked it down to the macros BOOST_UT_LOG_BEGIN and BOOST_UT_LOG_END. When one protects this macro calls with a mutex, the tests work stable again. After the investigation we found 'Support for the testing of multithreaded programs.' on the open issues list of Boost.Test. Does this mean that Boost.Test is not thread-safe at all? Do we misuse Boost.Test by calling things like BOOST_CHECK_EQUAL, BOOST_CHECK and BOOST_REQUIRE concurrently from different threads? Any clarification on this topic is welcome. Best regards, Peter.

newbie doubts in compilation process

Hi all, I am newbie in Boost libraries, and I'm specially interested in Graph Library (BGL). I'm working with VC++ 6.0 and I have a couple of questions about usign the library under this SDK. Of course I've read the Boost documentation and I know VC++ 6 doesn't pass the regresion test but I'm doubty about the compilation process. Those are the steps I followed: 1.- I did the outlined comands in getting started cd boost_1_31_0 bjam "-sTOOLS=msvc" install As result I obtained in drive C: a boost dir with "include" and "libs" subdirs and boost_date_time-vc6-mt-1_31.dll boost_date_time-vc6-mt-gd-1_31.dll boost_filesystem-vc6-mt-1_31.dll boost_filesystem-vc6-mt-gd-1_31.dll boost_regex-vc6-mt-1_31.dll boost_regex-vc6-mt-gd-1_31.dll boost_signals-vc6-mt-1_31.dll boost_signals-vc6-mt-gd-1_31.dll boost_thread-vc6-mt-gd-1_31.dll and the related .lib files. Why aren't there any .dll file of the others libraries(graph, math, type_traits...)??? 2.- I executed bjam in directory: BOOST_ROOT\libs\graph\test and what I obtained was empty directories like BOOST_ROOT\bin\boost\libs\graph\test\vector_graph_cc.test\msvc\debug just one for every test source. I supose that is due to VC++ 6.0 is not able to compile the BGL, is that the reason??? I get something similar if I executed bjam in directory: BOOST_ROOT\libs\graph\examples 3. boost::lambda and MinGW on Windows

I have troubles compiling boost::lambda with MinGW on windows MinGW: 2.0.0-3 (yeah, I know its old) gcc: 3.2 (mingw special 20020817-1) The compiler thinks that types in boost/lambda/construct.hpp in boost::detail::destructor are undefined.. My understanding is that executable or object code is a derivative work of all the source code that it is built from. So any executable that uses a library is a derivative work of that library. (There is a question as to whether this applies to header files that only define named constants and structure layouts, but little question that it applies to inline and statically-linked function definitions. I downloaded yesterday the boost libraries (mainly for the memory libs) and to tell the truth i'm impressed with pool and smart pointers. Especially the boost smart pointers will save me from months of coding! However i have a question about smart pointers. Let's say i have these objects(the code is just an example): class Slave { Slave(); ~Slave(); }; class Master { Master(); Master(int size); ~Master(); Slave *sl; }; I want "sl" to be an array of Slaves on the free store but the sized will be determined in the constructor. With normal pointers i would write: Master::Master(int val) { sl=new Slave[val]; } Master::~Master() { delete sl; } How can i achieve the same with boost smart pointers? I've read the manual three or four times but i still don't get how to work this out. Does this have something to do with the empty ptr? I believe solution is in front of my eyes but i'm too blind(as usual) to see it...

All, I am trying to incorporate the boost::regex into an ATL project that I am working on. Everything seems to work well until I try to use the regex_replace function. disabling the building of debug libraries

From what I know, smart pointers should be used when you have one object, here you (potentially) have many. I think what you really want to do here is to use a container class like stl::list or stl::vector to contain your slave objects. Dynamically resize matrix when inserting more elements

I'd go with scoped_array<> by default, and only go with shared_array<> if you need to share OWNERSHIP of that array. This master/slave example doesn't give enough context to make the choice apparent. Host IP changing Thursday

The system administrators at Indiana University are planning to change the Boost mailing lists to a new host IP address Thursday. Although the changeover itself will happen very quickly, it will take some time for the DNS change to propagate. Boost's DNS usually specifies 6 hour refreshes and 12 hour "Time to Live". We will cut that to 1 hour each from now until it is clear the change is working well. So you should see no more than a two hour outage. The last time we did something like this it went pretty smoothly, but a few people had trouble with cached copies of the IP address for a few days. Anyhow, be aware that change is coming Thursday, and that mailing list response time will be longer than usual during the changeover. Thanks, --Beman

Hi, I defined the following operator to stream optional<char>'s: std::ostream & operator<< (std::ostream & os, boost::optional<char> const & op) { if (op) os << *op; else os << '_'; return os; } Now, when I use: boost::optional<char> a ('a'); std::cout << a; 'a' is printed like I expected. However, when I use: std::ostream_iterator<boost::optional<char> > oi (std::cout); *oi = a; '1' is printed and my operator is apparently ignored (I expected another 'a'). Hi all, I'm trying to build the complete boost 1.31 on a True64 Unix V5.1A machine using the Compaq C++ V6.5-014 compiler. After invoking bjam, the compiler hangs on the last command seen below. tokenizer and wstring with VC7.1

Has anybody managed to get tokenizer working for wide characters with VC7.1 (boost version 1.31.0)? Unfortunately as I compiled it I had received a million plus errors due to the Linker Error. Please tell me whats wrong???????????? P.S. The Library folder for Boost is Empty and I includeded the Boost Include Directory in the gcc path. Semaphore and barriers for boost-threads?

Hi, I am new to Boost, and like what I see. I hope to be able to use more Boost libraries in the C++ projects that I work on. Would it be a good thing to add semaphore and barrier classes to Boost Threads? For semaphores, having something analogous to the POSIX functions sem_wait() and sem_post() would be nice. For barriers, having something analogous to pthread_barrier_wait() would be nice. It is not very hard to roll your own versions of these primitives using boost::condition and boost::mutex classes, but it would be nice to have them in a library. Any opinions? There are no semantics for null_vertex. I assume I can copy it, but can I compare it against other vertex descriptors via == and !=? Is it always different from "real" vertex descriptors? Doug

Determining offset of regex syntax errors

Members of class reg_expression know where they are up to while compiling, but don't include that information when they throw. It can be pretty daunting to get the "Invalid regular expression" error message, with no indication of where to start looking, so I'd like to be more helpful. Given the character offset from the start of the RE, I can put the cursor there. Any suggestions as to how to obtain that information? Thanks, Keith MacDonald

Redirecting the detailed test report

Hi, Recently we have decided to use the Boost Test libraries to provide automated tests to our project. To help with the test result visualization, we created an utility to generate HTML pages from Boost test reports (as generated by -- report_level=detailed). In the begining of implementation, the amount of tests was small and we could just cut-and-paste the test report to a file used as the input of out in-house HTML generator. Now, the amount of tests increased and cutting-and-pasting the report become a pain. So the question: How can we send the test report to a separated file? We used unit_test_log::instance().set_log_stream( stream ) in the definition of test_suite* init_unit_test_suite( int argc, char* argv[] ) to redirect the test log and it worked fine. However, unit_test_result::instance().detailed_report( stream ) can not be used in the same way. We can not simply redirect the test output to a file (using ">") because our application prints lots of information during execution and is pretty hard to change this behaviour. Thanks in advance.

Overloading New and Delete to track memory in shared_ptr.

Hi again, Well I'm making pretty good progress in learning proper way to use shared_ptr's but I'm still a little nervous about leaking memory, especially if I manage to do something I'm not supposed to do and don't recognize that a memory leak may be occuring. I've used the overloading new/delete before to help track memory leaks and I was wondering if that would be possible with shared_ptrs. I tried my old header files with and saw tons of leaks but I think its because my New that I use logs the creation to a Tracer class but since the Delete happens in the shared_ptr, its not using the overloaded Delete that removes stuff from the tracer when its deleted. I've looked around and found some examples of making a custom deleter to pass into the shared ptr when creating a new shared_ptr which should work but I have some worries about it. I'm not quite sure what the recommended way of doing this would be. About the only thing I can think of would be to have two different deleters which would be conditionally compiled something like this : //Overloaded New to log allocation to a tracer, theres a define to add the file and line number to the new call #ifndef NDEBUG void * operator new (unsigned int size, char const * file, int line) { void * p = new (size); if (Tracer::Ready) NewTrace.Add (p, file, line); return p; } struct deleter { void operator() (void * p) const { if (Tracer::Ready) NewTrace.Remove(p); delete p; } } #else struct deleter { void operator() (void * p) const { delete p; } } #endif //NewTrace is an extern'd object in the Main.cpp file So then I'd pass in the deleter to the shared_ptr and then whichever deleter was defined would be passed into the shared_ptr. I'm kinda cobbling together a few different things I've seen but I think that with this I could include the header file in the .cpp file of any class that I want to track the memory of and then just make sure I send in the deleter when I reset or make a new shared ptr. For instance in my LoggerFactory.cpp file : #include "../include/Logger.hpp" #include "../include/LoggerFactory.hpp" #include "../include/dbnew.hpp" LoggerMap LoggerFactory::loggers; boost::shared_ptr<Logger> LoggerFactory::getInstance(std::string& logger) { boost::shared_ptr<Logger>& TheLoggerRef = loggers[logger]; if(!TheLoggerRef.get()) TheLoggerRef.reset(new Logger(logger),deleter()); return TheLoggerRef; } So then the dbnew would define the deleter to use for the Logger object, if it was a debug build it would also create the overloaded new operator, define the _FILE_ and _LINE_ macros to send into the new New operator. And if its not the debug build then essentially the normal deleter is given to the shared_ptr and everything procedes as normal. Is this a good way to go about adding memory leak checking? I've looked for a new memory leak checkers like valgrind but thats only available on Linux and I'm stuck on windows.. and all the memory checkers I've been able to find only support VC++ or borland and I use gcc. So I would like a nice simple way that I can drop right in, which is what I'm going for with the overloading new and the custom deleter. Joshua.

Any one used boost with comeau c++ compiler for visual c++.net 2003?

To the community; I'm thinking of geting comeau computing's c++ frontend for visual c++.net 2003. I was wondering if anyone has experience using those two programs in conjunction with the boost libraries. In viewing the regression test, I was also wondering why Comeau doesn't seem to compile at a rate of 100% with boost. Is that due to Comeau unconformance, boost unconformance or problems with the c++ backend program, vc 7.1, gcc 3.2 ect. Anyone have any clues? If requested, I can provide the > entire error output. It looks like you are trying to use the wrong library. SunPro refers to the Sun C++ compiler and tools whereas you are using GNU C++. You have to build the library and application with the same compiler.

Howdy. As I am only interested in using the regex library right now, I followed the instructions for building that library only, using dmake. Compilation went fine. When I tried using the library in a little test program with the command: g++ regextest.cxx -I./boost_1_31_0 -L./boost_1_31_0/libs/regex/build/sunpro -lboost_regex -o regextest.cxx I get many undefined symbol errors.
