Has anyone already successfully built Boost with the "Visual C++ Toolkit 2003", aka the free command line version of VC 7.1? I adjusted VC71_ROOT and copied "vcvars32.bat" to "bin". Hi, We compiled the latest RegEx library on: 1. SunOS 5.8 Workshop 6: We used the sunpro.mak makefile. Unfortunately, we received many error messages regarding conversions from enum to int and vice versa. 2. HP-UX 11.11 aCC 3.33: We used the generic.mak makeilfe. We got an error regarding dynamic_cast from char*& to char*. In both cases, we didn't run the configure script in libs/config, because if we do, we get many compilation errors (probably because of the #define-s in the created user.hpp). Are you aware of these problems? or are we doing something wrong? Is it imperative that we run the configure script and not use the default user.hpp? On top of that, we managed to overcome the problems I mentioned by simply specifing explicit conversion and casting, and we compiled RegEx on Forte 6 with the 64-bit compilation flag. The compilation worked, but unfortunately, the tests failed. (I mean, the compiled okay and run, but they say that tests.txt contains errors - something that didn't happen when compiling the 32-bit version). What can we do to make it work in 64-bits? Bind and shared_ptr

Hi, The current bind defines the placeholder _1, _2 etc. I was wondering if there is another placeholder that will deference the placeholder if the container is holding pointers instead of copies? Usually I store shared_ptrs in containers instead of direct copies as they are polymorphic class C; // this is our object we are storing typedef boost::shared_ptr<C> CSP; std::vector<CSP> C_List; Now we have a function that operates on C void Operate(C &c); C_List clist; // the list of shared_ptrs to C // this won't compile std::for_each (clist.begin (), clist.end (), boost::bind (Operator,_1)); I have to make an auxillary function to compile void Wrap_Operate (CSP &c) { Operate(*c); } std::for_each (clist.begin (), clist.end (), boost::bind (Wrap_Operate, _1)); Is there to avoid making the additional function and have a placeholder that will dereference directly (eg *_1, *_2)? bjam failed to build (mingw)

Hi, I have updated from CVS today, set the dev-cpp bin directory into PATH and run: build.bat mingw. This build has failed, attachment '1.txt' contains stdout&stderr outputs. Then I set two additional environment variables: set MINGW_ROOT_DIRECTORY=C:\Dev-Cpp set BOOST_JAM_TOOLSET_ROOT=C:\Dev-Cpp\ and again run: build.bat mingw. This build failed too, attachment '2.txt' contains stdout&stderr outputs. Am I something missing? Have a nice day, L.

I'm trying to use the "get" template with boost::variant but can't figure out how to get my compiler to recognize it. Boost::tokenizer and reverse iterators

I'm using boost v1_31_0 and gcc v3.3.2 In experimenting with boost::tokenizer to meet a requirement that I have, I've tried hooking it to a reverse iterator. This act produced a run-time error. This is the code: const string test = "One:Two:Three:Four"; typedef char_separator<char> Sep; typedef tokenizer<Sep,string::const_reverse_iterator> Tok; Sep sep(":"); Tok t(test,sep); for (Tok::iterator iter=t.end();iter!=t.begin();++iter) cout << *iter << endl; Executing this produces continous output of "garbage". Switching the ".end()" and ".begin()" references in the for loop doesn't fix this problem. Dear Group, During some initial experiments with the BGL-GraphViz interface, I observed a significant asymmetry between a given DOT graph input with boost::read_graphviz() and output with boost::write_graphviz() (without changing any attributes). bjam hanging on MacOS X

I downloaded Boost 1.31.0 and built bjam with the build.sh script. Now, when I try to build boost with bjam -sTOOLS=darwin install, it just hangs, with no output to the console at all. Is there a way to set it into a verbose mode to see what's going on, or does anybody have any idea what's wrong? This is MacOS X 10.3.3 (7G33) on a 12" powerbook G4 (1.33Ghz) with the latest developer tools (7K249). -- Nick

Regex++ Installation Problems

Given a thread A created by a thread B. Is calling the join-method of A from a thread C a well-defined operation? (With C != B && C != A) It seems to work fine, but I want to make sure that this was not just 'luck'. Hah! I found the answer in a python mailing list from someone who was having trouble building the python part of boost in conjunction with stlport. [regex] invalid syntax for non-gready repeats

Hi, this inocent code throws an exception: static const regex rpath( "Return-Path:(.*?)Received: ", regex_constants::icase ); according to http://www.boost.org/libs/regex/doc/syntax.html this is how non-gready repeats are specified. Can anybody figure out what is wrong? Thanks Thorsten

My %LIB% is now C:\STLport-4.6.2\lib;C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003\SDK\v1.1\Lib\ My %INCLUDE% is now C:\STLport-4.6.2\stlport;C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003\SDK\v1.1\include\ My rebuilds have been starting with copying dlls and libs to /Boost, so I blew away the bin directory and the target /Boost directory and watched it rebuild each. I noticed a couple of typos in the latest release notes for Boost.Test, at http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/boost/boost/libs/test/doc/release_not… It now reads, near the top, <LI>Floating point comaprison algorithm reworked (Is not backward compatible!!!) <UL> <LI><u>tolerance now expected in persent units</u></LI> That should be comparison in the first line and percent in the last.

Win32 Non-greedy Regex "\w*?" matches whitespace (tab or space)

When changing the "search for word characters" from greedy to non-greedy, it starts to match whitespace characters. Attached is an example program. If you remove the '?' to make the search greedy, then it (correctly) doesn't match. I am using boost 1.31.0, on WinXP using VC7.1. I have confirmed that this does not occur on my Linux machine. Also attached is my Jamfile to make sure I didn't just compile it wrong. It occurs in both debug and release mode. Hi, I added several algorithms that extent STL algorithms set. I use them in my Boost.test development. But since they seems to be generic and IMO should be present in STL I propose to push them in boost/algorithm.hpp (or under boost/algorithm). I remember there was a discussion already about these algorithms. I'm trying to compile boost 1.3.0 using the CodeWarrior 9.2 compiler on Mac OS X (10.3.3). A simple question involving boost.function and boost.lambda

Greetings, I would like to crate a lambda expression that simply executes two functions sequentially. I have: using namespace boost; using namespace boost::lambda; function0<void> func1 = cout << constant('1'); function0<void> func2 = cout << constant('2'); I have tried: function0<void> funcs = (func1, func2); but this seems to execute only one of the two functions when it is called. How to compile minimal_test.cpp with gcc?

Hi, I downloaded boost-1.31.0 and the bjam package. I first compiled bjam and copied the executeables to /usr/local/bin. Then I went on to boost-1.31.0 (patched with the regex files). I first changed the env variables for python and compiled and installed the package with: bjam "-sTOOLS=gcc" install After building was finished, the files where copied. The include files got installed under /usr/local/include/boost-1_31/boost. I made a symlink /usr/local/include/boost pointing to /usr/local/include/boost-1_31/boost. Python.exe crashes with C++ interfaces exported to python using boost

Hi, I have developed a dll, in that I have exported the C++ interfaces as python interfaces using boost. While running the python script, which uses those interfaces, I am facing a strange problem. When I try to call the del operator on the object of a particular class in the python script, whose interfaces has been exported to python, the python.exe crashes and gives me the following error: _BLOCK_TYPE_IS_VALID(pHead->nBlockUse) When I try to debug my dll, it is crashing inside the destructor of the class, where a byte pointer is being deleted. Although the delete operator on the same type of object works fine when i try to do the same kind of operation from a sample C++ application using my dll. I have checked the project properties etc. and my dll uses Debug Multithreaded DLL and Multithreaded DLL, for the runtime library, for debug and release builds. I have also tried with both debug and release dlls. Please help, Thanks, Mayank

Sun C++ 5.5 and std::numeric_limits

As of patch 113817-04 to the Sun C++ 5.5 compiler (see http://sunsolve6.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1-21-113817 ), the functions in the numeric_limits class support 64 bit integers. However, the logic in boost/boost/config/stdlib/roguewave.hpp doesn't detect this a defines BOOST_NO_LONG_LONG_NUMERIC_LIMITS and hence causes an error: "../../../../boost/boost/limits.hpp", line 35: Error: Multiple declaration for std::numeric_limits<long long>. "../../../../boost/boost/limits.hpp", line 88: Error: Multiple declaration for std::numeric_limits<unsigned long long>. 2 Error(s) detected. Hello, Martin! Graphs are supposed to be passed by reference to visitor functions. Your program didn't do that, so it created tons of temporary graph copies. BGL: why is the prim algorithm only useable for undirected graphs?

Hi all, in the documentation of prim_minimum_spanning_tree is mentioned "... solving the minimum spanning tree problem for an undirected graph with weighted edges ...". In my application I use this graph type (the graph type is bidirectionalS => not directed): typedef adjacency_list<vecS,vecS,bidirectionalS,no_property,property<edge_weight_t,int> > BGraph; This type modells the VertexListGraph and IncidenceGraph concepts, which are required by the prim function. If I call the prim_minimum_spanning_tree, I get reasonalble results. In literature, I can only find usage of Prims algorithm for undirected graphs, too. Shared_Ptr problem with 1.30.2 and gcc 3.2.3

I've been using shared_ptr's for a while now with gcc 3.1 and recently had to upgrade to gcc 3.2.3. Ever since then I'm getting strange crashes when shared_ptr's are destructed. does boost regex support 64-bit for SunOS 5.8, HP-UX 11i (native compilers), WIN (MSVC-6) ? we are using an old(?) version - regexpp version 3.12. Is it recommended to upgrade to the latest version ? BGL: record tree-edges of MST during prim_minimum_spanning_tree

Hi, I'm looking for a possibility to record the tree edges in the minimum spanning tree (like the result of kruskal_minimum_spanning_tree). But unfortenuatley I depend on using the prim_minimum_spanning_tree function, because the root of the tree has to be defined. My first idea was, to use a dijkstra visitor and do something with the edge_relaxed respectivley edge_not_relaxed events, but this doesn't work, because these events doesn't give me an unique edge state. Hi all, Back in January last year, I asked if there was any documentation which could help me to Boostify GluCat: http://lists.boost.org/MailArchives/boost-users/msg02787.php Since then I have been very busy, but in the next few months I may be able to find the time to get this done right, so I'm asking again: GluCat is a new numeric template class library, hopefully destined for promotion to Boost. I would like to know where there is some documentation on how to: 1. Add concepts. Is there such a thing as a non-commutative multiplication concept? How do I check concepts? 2. Add numeric limits. Limits of U<T> would default to limits of T. 3. Add numeric promotion_traits. What are promotion_traits ? There is a discussion on ublas-dev mailing list about promotion_traits within uBLAS. 4. Add numeric type_traits. Also, is there a set of documented procedures which explain what is required for a library to be included in Boost? GluCat uses uBLAS. Should I take these questions to ublas-dev? Thanks

[BGL] graph constness and vertex/edge iterators

Hi all, I'm currently trying to write a wrapper in order to use the BGL algorithms and visitors on a home-made graph class. If I'm not mistaken, this requires me to write (amongst other things) a couple functions that will return iterators over my graph edges and vertices, eg: std::pair<graph_traits<MyGraph>::out_edge_iterator, graph_traits<MyGraph>::out_edge_iterator > out_edges(graph_traits<MyGraph>::vertex_descriptor u, const MyGraph& g) and similarly in_edges(...) , vertices(...) and edges(...) functions. However, it seems that this function profile forces me to do a const_cast on g when implementing the function body since the out_edge_iterators are not const iterators, though they point to internal elements of g. I had a look at the example given in the documentation (dealing with converting LEDA graphs to the BGL), but I didn't see anything helping me on this particular issue (also, the example in the doc is a bit outdated since it uses the deprecated Boost iterator adaptors). Am I forced to rely on const_cast in these functions, or is there a way to declare my graph edges, vertices and the corresponding iterators as const in my graph_traits class ? I'm a newbie with the BGL, and more generally with this whole traits/template specialization style of programming, so please excuse me if I overlooked something obvious. Cheers.

Is boost::mpl::is_sequence supposed to work with gcc 3.2.2 ? I'm trying to use it, but get "false" for boost::mpl::is_sequence<std::list<int> >::value using boost 1.31.0. The same happens with boost::mpl::has_begin. I'm working with FreeBSD 5.1. Any hints how to get it to work would be greatly appreciated. Wolfgang Meyer

I intend to write a visitor class which sets a boolean to each edge, and therefore I need the edge as key. Building 1.31.0 with intel-linux for Itanium 2

I am trying to build the Boost libraries on an Itanium 2 Linux machine using Intel C++ 8.0. The problem is that bjam is creating a directory path for the release versions that uses the string "ebug release" instead of "release". Hi, I've converted a container to use shared_ptrs instead of regular pointers, now my for_each algorithm doesn't work: Before: class Attr; std::vector< Attr* > mAttributes; . . . std::for_each( mAttributes.begin(), mAttributes.end(), std::bind2nd( std::mem_fn( &Attr::Write ), output ) ); After: std::vector< shared_ptr<Attr> > mAttributes; Now it doesn't compile because (of course) Attr::Write is not a method of shared_ptr<Attr>. Specifically, there still doesn't seem to be anything better than a second-granularity clock for Win32. In addition, the UNIX clock is not always as precise as it could be. In particular, the popular Pentium and and some other architectures have some sorts of cycle-granularity hardware clock or similar that can exceed the usual operating system clock used for time. Really--and I have no idea what work is presently being done on this--it might do people in some problem domains (including myself, at times) a lot of good to have clocks with separate notions of precision and accuracy. For example, on a Pentium, operating systems I care about tend to have a maximum system clock accuracy around about a millisecond plus or minus some, and its probably difficult or tricky to get better than that. However, if the system clock was used in combination with the Pentium cycle counter, we could probably get precision in excess of a nanosecond. Perhaps an interface for such a clock system might be: typedef boost::date_time::clock<type_of_accuracy_you_need_here, type_of_precision_you_need_here> myclock; To get the above imagined clock, I might use: clock<microsecond_accuracy, cycle_precision> If the clock requested was unavailable on the platform, a compile time error might result. Of course, oftentimes we know the characteristics of a clock's accuracy or precision, such as the Pentium cycle counter, but we don't know exactly how precise it is, so it might be inappropriate to refer to that clock as nanosecond_precision when it really might not be. In summary, a reliable cross-platform sub second clock is one of the features I miss most in date_time, and one of the features I can afford to miss least. Using pool_alloc with std::map

I am using boost::pool_alloc with std::map like this: typedef map<int, int, less<int>, pool_alloc<pair<int, int> > > MapT; MapT myMap; After myMap passes out of scope, I want to release unused memory from the pool. To do that, I need to get the type used to request chunks from the pool. pair<int, int> is not the answer since map uses rebind to get a different allocator. So how do I go about obtaining the correct singleton_pool interface? Your help is appreciated. -- Kevin Lin

Question about compiling boost.1.31.0 on Solaris

I was trying to build the regex library from boost.1.31.0 on a Solaris 7 box using STLport.4.6.2. I have a couple of STLport versions installed in /opt. Here's how I built: o cd boost_1_31_0/libs/regex/build o /export/home/qiuw01/research/boost-jam-3.1.9/bin.solaris/bjam "-sTOOLS=sunpro-stlport" -sSTLPORT_PATH=/opt I was expecting STLport.4.6.2 to be used. However when I used ldd on the generated .so library, it shows a dependency on an old version of STLport in /usr/lib qiuw01$ ldd libboost_regex-sw-p-1_31.so librt.so.1 => /usr/lib/librt.so.1 libstlport_sunpro.so.4.5 => /usr/lib/libstlport_sunpro.so.4.5 libaio.so.1 => /usr/lib/libaio.so.1 libc.so.1 => /usr/lib/libc.so.1 libdl.so.1 => /usr/lib/libdl.so.1 /usr/platform/SUNW,Ultra-4/lib/libc_psr.so.1 <ethos:~/research/boost_1_31_0/bin/boost/libs/regex/build/libboost_regex.so/ sunpro-stlport/release> This doesn't seem to be right. boost::any and arithmetic ?

Greetings all, as I'm new to this list, I'll keep my query short. It was suggested to me to use boost::any to store numeric values of whatever type (int, float, double, etc) so that I could use one std::list to store multiple values. I've looked through the header (any.hpp) and I admit it's a little hard for me to follow. I'm not what you'd call a superprogrammer... yet. :) I understand how to store a value in the boost::any object, but I'm not clear on how one would get that value back later (for display on screen, etc). What I'd really like to do is similar to one of the examples: --- snip --- struct property { property(); property(const std::string &, const boost::any &); std::string name; boost::any value; }; typedef std::list<property> properties; --- snip --- But I want to be able to do arithmetic with the resultant object(s): property T; property V; property Z; T [+-*/] Z; T = V [+-*/] Z T + [int,float,etc]; And so on. However, I want to make sure that the normal arithmetic type conversions (type promotions) take place (i.e. int + float returns a temporary object of type float). Example: boost::any value1; boost::any value2; boost::any value3; value1 = 127.915; value2 = 17; value3 = value1.getwhatevervalue() + value2.getwhatevervalue(); cout << value3.getwhatevervalue() << endl; value3 = value2.getwhatevervalue() + value1.getwhatevervalue(); cout << value3.getwhatevervalue() << endl; Both should return a temporary float with a value of 144.915. since I don't know how to get the value from boost::any, I just used getwhatevervalue() as an example. Posix extended regexp

Hello, I'm new to boost and I had one question. I'm trying to match strings against regular expressions that are expected to be posix extended regular expressions. But for some reason, the modifier ^ doesn't seem to be working. For example, when I try to match "Manish" against "^[mM]anish.*", I am returned false. What am I doing wrong? boost 1.31 compile problems

After installing boost and trying to compile a project I found I was missing some files. Hi. I'm thinking of starting an open source project, and I'm seriously considering using Boost. I've read many messages regarding the practical aspects of using boost with other projects (particularly open source). However, I have found nothing useful regarding the legal aspect of using Boost for an open source project. As I'm considering licensing my project under the GPL, I'm concerned about the GPL "friendlyness" towards Boost. Besides the technical aspect of it, what is the best way to structure the project, to license the project, etc. in order to satisfy GPL and Boost licenses? Any help would be much appreciated. regex_search (v4) raises exception for wregex

hi! the following pattern (35 matching token, and at least one more) with this simple expression ("[_]+$") throws "memory exhausted" when using wchar_t strings. the same works with char strings even triple sized. matching doesnt throw, if we use "^[_]+$", "[_]{1,}$", "[_][_]*$" etc. so this is a bug. it seems the expression-string is short enough to cause some problem, but i was unable to track down the error. wchar_t * wp = L"___________________________________x"; wregex wre(L"[_]+$"); try { regex_search(wp, wre); } catch (bad_expression & e) { cout << e.what() << endl; } another issue: i think, "(one|two|three|)" style alternation (notice the empty string on the right) should be accepted and handled as "(one|two|three)?" now it throws bad_expression

All users of Boost.Regex-1.31.1 should be aware that there are now a set of patches available for this release - see https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=7586 for downloads. Issues fixed include: POSIX style regular expressions not behaving correctly with regex_grep. Non-greedy repeats not backtracking correctly in some cases. Backreferences cause some repeat operators to behave incorrectly. Some wide character expressions weren't getting correctly optimised, leading to thrown exceptions in trivial cases. Hi, I am trying to Install BOOST_1_30_0 on HPUX B.11.11 using aCC Version HP ANSI C++ B3910B A.03.33. Problem building Boost 1.31.0 for VC6

Hi, I'm trying to build the Boost 1.31.0 libraries for VC6 (on WinXP). My installation of MSVC is "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\VC98". All my user environment variables point to this location, as they should. I created the bjam executable, placed it in my Boost root (C:/boost_1_31_0), and then ran bjam with the following command: bjam "-sTools=msvc" However, it attempts to run the following command for every library: "CALL D:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003\VC7\bin\cl" I don't even have .NET installed on my PC! Why would it be doing this? I tried explicitly telling bjam where vc6 is with the -sMSVC_ROOT argument, but it always outputs the same result. I've verified all my user environment variables, and they all point to C: and to VC6, as they should. I don't know why bjam insists on trying to build the boost libraries for Visual Studio .NET. lexical_cast<string> of type char

I'm converting our code to use lexical_cast for converting between our numeric types to string. It worked mostly but was surprised to see what looked like graphic characters on my screen. It turns out that when we wanted to display the ascii value of a character, lexical_cast<string> doesn't work -- it doesn't treat the char as a numeric, which when we really think about it, makes a lot of sense. Casting the char to int solves the problem. But I was just wondering how the experts would handle this. char c = 65; string s1 = lexical_cast<string>(c) // s1 = "A" string s2 = lexical_cast<string>((int)c) // s2 = "65" Thanks! -Jerry

Hi, I'm using Boost 1.31.0 with VC++ 7.1 and I'm having some problems converting std::string to std::wstring and back. Here's the code that I'm trying to get to compile: std::wstring x = boost::lexical_cast<std::wstring>( std::string("this doesn't work")); std::string y = boost::lexical_cast<std::string>( std::wstring(L"neither does this")); The error I get for string to wstring: lexical_cast.hpp(150): error C2679: binary '>>' : no operator found which takes a right-hand operand of type 'std::wstring' (or there is no acceptable conversion) And the errors I get for wstring to string: lexical_cast.hpp(144): error C2679: binary '<<' : no operator found which takes a right-hand operand of type 'const std::basic_string<_Elem,_Traits,_Ax>' (or there is no acceptable conversion) with [ _Elem=wchar_t, _Traits=std::char_traits<wchar_t>, _Ax=std::allocator<wchar_t> ] lexical_cast.hpp(144): error C2228: left of '.fail' must have class/struct/union type Any ideas of what I'm doing wrong? Hello folks, I'm just getting around to upgrade to Boost 1_31_0 from Boost 1_30_0. I'm attempting to use 1_31_0 out-of-the-box (w/no bjam) but am confused about how to resolve problems related to native wchar_t support (or lack thereof). Some details: I'm using MSV6 with the Intel 7.1 compiler. Problem with Boost 1.31.0 Regex for tru64cxx65

Having found out how to build Bjam, I have tried to build the libraries of Boost 1.31.0 for tru64cxx65. I'm only interested in Regex at the moment, so I won't bother you with the problems building other libraries. When the build gets to this point: tru64cxx65-C++-action bin/boost/libs/regex/build/libboost_regex.so/tru64cxx65/release/cregex.o it hangs. I have run into this situation with other large files, and my usual remedy is to decrease the optimization level. How can I do that? If I can't do it for just this file, I'm willing to reduce the optimization level for the entire library, or even for all libraries. Boost won't build

Google, the FAQ and the list archives haven't yielded up a clue. I *must* be overlooking something obvious. Help!

VC++ defines the latter if wchar_t is an intrinsic type *or* a type alias but it defines the former only if wchar_t is an intrinsic type. I couldn't find any detailed documentation for Intel C++ online so I don't know if it is exactly compatible in this respect.

Problem building archive libs for mipspro

I am trying to upgrade from Boost 1.30.0 to 1.31.0. My main interest is in the Regex library. I was pleased to build its libraries successfully for intel-linux, both .a and .so forms, using bjam. When trying to build the libraries for mipspro, it fails to build the .a forms, because it is trying to use ranlib. The bjam system is too unfamiliar to me to debug it, so I'm hoping somebody else can give me a remedy. (Note: I built bjam from the source in tools/build/jam_src, as described in the docs.)
