[pool] Speed of pool_allocator<>

Hi! I am in the process of writing a program which has to handle large numbers (~200000 - 400000) objects of the same class. These objects will be created and deleted frequently, so I thought some kind of specialized memory management would be handy. I wrote a test program (see below) to check what boost.pool would gain me. The results make me think that I have done something wrong: debug mode: std::allocator 2.17s boost::pool_allocator 7.18s release mode: std::allocator 0.11s boost::pool_allocator 0.36s i.e., std::allocator was more than 3 times faster than boost::pool_allocator (Win2k, 256MB). Any ideas what i have done wrong? Newbie question... (sorry)

Hi all, sorry for the newbie question... I have been trying to use the boost libraries with no luck I will briefly as possible list the steps I took, so that you can let me know where I went wrong. (please bear with me) 1) I downloaded the latest version and decompressed it so that i have a "C:\boost_1_31_0 directory". 2) I built Boost.Jam by starting the Visual Studio.Net command prompt, cd'ed to the "C:\boost_1_31_0\tools\build\jam_src" directory and invoked the build.bat .... The build was succesfull. 3) Copied the bjam.exe from the "C:\boost_1_31_0\tools\build\jam_src\bin.ntx86" directory to the Vc7/bin directory. 4)Added the VC71_ROOT environment variable to windows with the "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003\Vc7" path as the value. 5) Made sure that the PATH environment variable had the Vc7\bin path in it. 6) reset. 7) Started the Visual Studio.Net command prompt, cd'ed to the "C:\boost_1_31_0" directory and invoked bjam "-sTOOLS=vc7.1" install ... the whole process started.. building was succesfull (I believe) and I had a new directory c:\Boost with the \include and \lib sub dirs as mentioned in the "Getting Started" page. 8) Started visual studio.NET, went into the menu "Tools->Options->Projects->VC++ Directories" where I set "C:\boost_1_31_0" in the list of INCLUDE directories. 9) Copied a simple example from the boost website to test the libraries, compiled and VC doesn't find one of the header files.. 10) After many, many attempts I lost it and added the "C:\boost_1_31_0\lib" and "C:\boost_1_31_0\bin" to the other list of directories in the LIBRARY and EXECUTABLE list of directories in VC. After loosing it some more (after more attempts) I added even "C:\boost" in the same places as I had done in the previous steps (just in case). Now I get this fatal error "fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'libboost_filesystem-vc71-sgd-1_31.lib' " It doesn't seem to find the .lib but I have checked in the boost directories and that .lib is there!!! Any suggestions.... please... All - I'm cross-posting this to boost-users and the developer list since it pertains to both. Over the last couple months there has been a rise in 'spam attacks' on the Wiki. Basically people are inserting links to commercial sites on wiki pages. These sites are totally unrelated to boost, c++, etc. I thank the many boosters that have spent their precious time removing the defacements. But the time has come to crack down. The following IP ranges have been banned from the Wiki. 61.55.32.* 61.55.33.* 69.63.103.* 210.82.76.* 210.82.106.* 219.233.195.* 218.5.65.* I will be monitoring and banning additional IP addresses as needed. ternary search trie

Hi, Does the BOOST library (somewhere) contain a ternary search trie container type (as described by Robert Sedgewick in his "Algorithms - 3ed edition" or here: http://www.cs.princeton.edu/~rs/strings/) that can by used as a standalone container (such as for example STL's map) ? I don't find something like this listed on the Boost library page (http://www.boost.org/libs/libraries.htm) Any help will be greatly appreciated, Thanks Sybrand

Hi, I am new to Spirit, and I am writing a reader for s-expressions, and so far has encountered the following problems, which seem to me to be contrarry to the documentation (Spirit 1.8.0 in Boost 1.31.0). Since whitespace skipper tries to consume as much space as it can, it is not suitable here, so I don't want to use it. Here comes the first problem: even when I don't pass space_p to parse(), the skipper is still present: --- ( ) ^D Hit: 2 --- --- (())( Hit: 4 ) ^D Hit: 2 --- Another problem is when I try to use istreambuf_iterator instead of istream_iterator (this is done in Spirit examples, too). When substituting istreambuf_iterator in the first typedef in main(), the program no longer compiles - neither with Intel Compiler 8.0.055, nor with GCC 3.3.2. Intel complains about /usr/local/include/boost/spirit/iterator/multi_pass.hpp(537): error: initial value of reference to non-const must be an lvalue return **input; and GCC's messages are too long to parse. :) Any help? Using Regex

Hi I have installed the boost 1.31.0 and have been trying to compile the test examples that were there in the regular expression library.But the compiler isnt able to identify the header files.So I did include the path during my compilation by using the -I and the path name..However it is still inable to compile as it is unable to include or search the indented header files... This is my first time I have been using this kind of library.Can someone suggest a way so that I can start using the library.Is there a way in which I can directly compile nad run the files without having to go through the ordeal of specifying the path at compile time everytime I wanna use the file Any help will be highly appreciated. Automake/Autoconf rules for boost libs

Hi folks, is somewhere documented how to add automake/autoconf stuff for boost to a project? I have a set of small testcases and the need boost_unit_test_framework-gcc library to compile. At the moment I add the lib directly to linker options with project_test_LDADD = -lboost_unit_test_framework-gcc But this is not platform independent, because someone might have not gcc installed. So how can I do it in a better way? Sebastian

Newbie question: add_edge()

Thanks for all the help so far. I'm not there yet, though! The documentation for add_edge() says that the first two parameters are of type boost::graph_traits<G>::vertex_descriptor. In the example in quick_tour.html it is called with integers (from an enum) as its first two parameters. Is that because: i. add_edge is overloaded to take integers as the first two parameters; ii. boost::graph_traits<G>::vertex_descriptor just happens to be an integer type in this case; iii. boost::graph_traits<G>::vertex_descriptor is /always/ an integer type; or iv. some other reason I haven't thought of. Dear All, I am a beginner with Boost and hae compiled the library on my suse 9.0 Athlon-m machine. I can compile the programs and link them (using Kdevelop) but if I invoke the programm I am getting a strange error which shows me that the shared library libboost_date_time-gcc-1_31.so.1. 31.0 cannot be loaded. This is somehow strange since I have linked against the static library using the argument -lboost_date_time-gcc. The boost install process compile a big rane of libraries and I am ot familar ith them. Can you help me with this issue??? Thank you very much for any kind of help, Przemyslaw

problem compiling with Dinkumware

Hi, I'm having trouble properly compiling Boost with the Dinkumware STL implementation (working with Visual C++ 7.1). The problem is that bjam always calls CL with a /I that pulls in Microsoft's include files first, so that they take precedence over the Dinkumware ones. This behavior seems to be rooted far down in the file Jambase located in jam_src. I don't really feel like fooling with that. What can I do? -- Jean-Pierre

It doesn't have to support the whole language (not for a while, maybe never), I just need to be able to parse out the names and locations of all the functions in a file. It's for a JavaScript editor built into one of our products, and later we'll be adding auto-completion. That'll require a more thorough parser, but for now, I'm just after funciton locations. So far so good... though I'll undoubtedly be quite familiar with the BOOST_SPIRIT_DEBUG* macros before I'm done. Okay. Problem solved. The answer was indeed inside #scanner_business. Rules make for picky parsers. So I used a grammar<> and it compiled just fine. Now if I can just get it to WORK. ;) Whoops. Infinite recursion. Neither of your suggestions worked for me. Both gave me the same basic "do_parse_virtual: can't convert from 'const scanner_t' to 'const boost::spirit::rule<T0>::scanner_t &'". I had a suspision about the phrase vs char thing... good to know. So should I be looking for a compiler fix or an alternate path? a template to extend types to support something like SQL NULL

hi i have an int. but it should also support a "undefined" state like SQL NULL. most times i can use -1 for this. but there are also data types without a reasonable undefined value. maybe float or double. or maybe -1 is perfectly legal. so i used my own smartptr class (which i will replace by boost::shared_ptr since it is better and compatible to libs from strangers) to fix the problem as follows: shared_ptr<int> a(new int(10)); shared_ptr<int> b; // has the value "undefined" like SQL NULL. now i can do checks like if ( ! b ) printf("%d", *b); now my problem was that several places in my program access the same int instance. they can assign values, and then other parts of the program can read these values. that's good behaviour.but i cannot set the object to "undefined". see why: void foo (shared_ptr<int> a) { *a = 10; // <-- ok! this works! everybody now has the 10! } void errorfoo (shared_ptr<int> a) { a.reset(); // <-- this does of course not work, since only my local // copy of a is now SQL NULL. } so i restructured my shared_ptr to make it able to hold this special SQL NULL state also. this way i got really awkward semantics though. i don't go in details here, but in my shared_ptr the errorfoo function works as expected. (the function is not called "reset" then). but i got severe problems in typecast semantics of my modified shared_ptr, so i decided to dump this beast before anyone else has to see it :-))) i thought that maybe it's not a good idea to unite smartpointer with SQL NULL facility. maybe it is better to write: shared_ptr<nullabletype<int> > x(new nullabletype<int>(55)); x->setnull(); if (x->isnull()) fooooo(); printf("the int is %d\n", x->obj()); // throw exception if x is null in this example the shared_ptr is just sugar. it is not needed. the nullable subsystem is now independent from shared_ptr. is there such a nullable type extender beast in boost somewhere? or do i have to invent it? by the way, the following is not a good solution i think: int thevalue; bool thevalue_is_defined; now programmers can do errors like access "thevalue" even though "thevalue_is_defined" is false. i want some mechanism to prevent programmers from doing this kind of errors. if and only if the value is defined it should be possible to read it. also this nullable type extender is handy for a database layer to interact with SQL. cya! erik -- Erik Thiele

Spirit 1.6 with VC6

I'm getting several compiler errors when trying to use the Spirit library. When compiling one of the samples from the v1.6 documentation, I get a linker error: SpiritTest.obj : fatal error LNK1179: invalid or corrupt file: duplicate comdat "?do_parse@?$parse_subrule@V?$match@Unil_t@spirit@boost@@@spirit@boost@@U?$subrules_scanner@V?$scanner@PBDU?$scanner_policies@U?$skipper_iteration_policy@Uiteration_policy@spirit@boost@@@spirit@boost@@Umatch_policy@23@Uaction_policy@23@@spirit@boos67ac75e0" LNK1179 suggested that the /H _compiler_ option might be involved. It (supposedly) controls how long a symbol is allowed to be when the compiler is generating symbol names. I've tried several different variations on the /H option, /H512, /H1024, etc. They all give the same error message, and the symbol "?do_parse@..." doesn't get any longer (or shorter for that matter). The basic_chset template is in "utility", and everything in "utility" depends on various bits and pieces of "core". basic_chset is derived from unary, which is defined in core/composite. So I tried to convert with boost-library numeric_cast and found the following problems (gcc version 3.2.3 20030422): -the maximum could not be handled correctly, for example: +numeric_cast<int>(numeric_limits<unsigned int>::max()); doesn't throw a exception -no precession handling, example: +numeric_cast<float>(numric_limits<double>::epsilon()+1); doesn't throw a exception -no NaN, bounded/unbounded and exact handling. -no specialization. I need numeric_cast specializiation for: +numeric_limits-interface can't use for datatypes with caracteristics only known at runtime. +datatyps without static_cast support (example: gmp-library) So I have extended the boost::numeric_cast for my special requirements. hi in some cases i do assign values to variables just for the life of my function: void foo() { bool oldfoorunning = foorunning; foorunning = true; dojobs(); dofoooo(); foorunning = oldfoorunning; } now the problem arises when dojobs throws an exception. in order to be safe i have to do: void foo() { bool oldfoorunning = foorunning; foorunning = true; try { dojobs(); dofoooo(); } catch (...) { foorunning = oldfoorunning; throw; } foorunning = oldfoorunning; } this is ugly and it can get more ugly by having more than one such variable. then you stack try/catch into each other and code gets really ugly and error prone. for that reason i created a class as follows: template<class X> class protassign : public boost::non_copyable { public: inline protassign (X &var_, const X &newvalue) : var(var_) { oldvalue = var; var = newvalue; } inline ~protassign () { try { var = oldvalue; } CATCHDESTRUCTOR; //<-- my special destructor error catching macro, //forget it. In the Kevin Bacon example in the Boost::Graph documentation, we declare: typedef adjacency_list < vecS, vecS, undirectedS, property < vertex_name_t, std::string >, property < edge_name_t, std::string > > Graph; Graph g; and later declare and call: typedef property_map < Graph, vertex_name_t >::type actor_name_map_t; actor_name_map_t actor_name = get(vertex_name, g); What are we actually getting back here? I can see that we can index it (we do later), but is it just an array? Or a vector? Or what? INI File Parser?

A while back, I noted that there was an INI file parser as part of boost. It was obscure, but I think it was in the program_options library. I note references to program_options searching the web site, but I'm not finding anything in the latest builds. I'm specifically interested in parsing INI files (I'm on a Macintosh) but the program_options library also seemed interesting. Is there anything available? boost::filesystem::path corruption

Hello all, I've recently started using some of the Boost libraries, one of which being boost::filesystem. I have however encountered a problem while using the library, which as far as I can tell is a bug. I'm not sure if anyone is aware of this problem, or if is not an issue with the library itself but rather with my configuration - in either case a description of the problem follows: Whenever I instantiate a boost::filesystem::path object and try to print out a text representation of the path using a method such as .string(), the path itself is printed out, however it looks as though the string is not terminated properly as a whole bunch of trailing garbage appears after the path. The following sample program produces the problem for me: #include <iostream> #include <boost/filesystem/path.hpp> int main(int c, char** v) { boost::filesystem::path testpath("test/path"); std::cout << testpath.native_file_string() << std::endl; return 0; } When I run this code I get output similar to the following: test/pathpÿÿÿÿtest/ÿÿÿÿdataÿÿÿÿpath... etc (a whole bunch of other random stuff like days of the week & month, as well as garbage character strings) Can anyone shed some light on this for me? limiting searches in BGL

Hello, I am just starting to use the BGL, and have been beating my head upon a problem. I am needing to find an irregularly bounded set of points in three dimensional space. The points are within a convex hull and the graph edges are edges in a delaunay triangulation. I want to start at a node known to be on the hull, and crawl through the inside with either depth first or breadth first search. If you are on the hull, you would not allow the search to continue outside the hull. I thought of doing this with a simple visitor, and color the unwanted vertices black. However, from inside the scope of the visitor, I do not believe I can have access to the colors. Several ugly hacks come to mind, but I would like to know if there is an easy way of doing this first? -Jason Crosswhite

That's a functor which returns true if the search should not continue after a certain vertex. - Volodya

dynamic boost::array and performance/size of STL vector

Dear list, I frequently need to use arrays with undetermined (at compile time) but constant (user specify size) size. I.e., I need something like boost::array<int> arr(5); without arr.insert etc, rather than boost::array<int,5> arr; which only accept constant array length. Of course I can use 'vector<int> arr(5)' in this case but I am worry about the performance and size overhead, specifically: 1. How is size() implemented in vector<>? I am concerned with this function since icc (intel c++ compiler) can not vectorize 'for(i=0;i<arr.size();i++)' unless arr.size() is an inlined reference to a variable. 2.Since I will have a lot of such arrays, I would also like to know how many additional variables vector<int> keeps. I.e. exactly how big is vector<int> arr(5)? It might be trivial to copy boost::array and add constructor/destructor but I do not want to re-invent the wheel. Thanks. Bo

Regex failing to match postcodes

Basically, I need to make sure that a UK postcode is valid. The postcode that is passed to my function sometimes has extra things with it such as: Wakefield, WF1 3RD Shrewsbury SY2 5PT Shropshire It now seems to be failing to find the postcode in the above examples. Also, when I pass my function a postcode that I know is invalid, such as JG2 7L5 it matches it as G2 7L5 instead of failing to do the match. Spirit Attributes, Semantic Actions, and Closures: The relationship.

Hi, I've been learning about Boost Spirit from the documentation, and one big gap I'm finding is how Spirit knows to call a particular signature semantic action given a particular parser. I see this has something to do with the match type, but I'm not sure how to actually define the match type for rule. I've discovered by accident that semantic actions seem to be called with the type of the closure member of a single-member closure, but I don't see this documented, and I can't quite figure out how its supposed to work. Its difficult to deduce expected signatures by the compiler error approach because GCC is giving fairly nonsensical errors for the sorts of template constructs Spirit seems to use, when something goes wrong. In particular, I'd like to know specifically how I am supposed to be defining semantic actions for my rules. Perhaps this is something that would be nice to be included somewhere in the documenation. Maybe it is, but I missed it somehow, or it wasn't spelled out explicitly enough for me to catch on. Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated! (By the way, I have to repeat the almost obligatory comment that everyone seems to make about Spirit: it is one of the most beautiful examples of C++ I have ever seen!) Aaron W. LaFramboise

Is there any workaround? It seems that a wrapper class with instances of all available generators and some if-else code can do this but there should be better ideas. Many thanks in advance. Bo

Yes, that is what is happening. The problem is that your single_thread objects are destroyed at the end of the loop body. By the time the new thread runs its single_thread may have been destroyed along with all its members. Hi, I understand that by using enable_if the following way: template <class T> T foo(T t, typename enable_if<boost::is_arithmetic<T> >::type* dummy = 0); I can include/exclude the appropriate function overloads. When I write: template<class T> T foo(T t, typename enable_if<[condition1]>::type* dummy = 0, typename enable_if<[condition2]>::type* dummy = 0); Does this mean an AND-relationship between condition1 and condition2? (So that a particular overload is enabled if and only if both conditions evaluate to true?) Thx, Gus

Hi all, regex_replace("XX",regex("X", boost::regex::literal), "Y") returns "YXY" instead of "YY" whereas the (even more) trivial case regex_replace("X",regex("X", boost::regex::literal), "Y") returns "Y" as expected. I am using boost_1_31_0 compiled with VC6(SP5). In addition, I have applied the patches from the package boost-1.31.0-regex-patch-20040503. What is going wrong here? Bernd

newbie question: missing libs ?

After building Boost 1.31.0 on Linux and on Irix, I expected to see a smart pointer library, something like libboost_smart_ptr-gcc-mt.so If fact, it looks like only date_time, filesystem, prg_exec, regex, signals, test_exec_monitor, thread, and unit_test_framework were built. I didn't see any error messages. Did I do something wrong? Thanks, Randy

Hi, I'm having trouble getting shared_ptr objects and threads to work in harmony. Problem compiling Threading lib on Linux

Hi, I've been developing some code on Windows using Boost threads which works fine. I'm porting it to Linux and am having problems compiling the Boost Threading library. I'm running Linux Mandrake 10 Community Edition and have attached the output I get when running bjam. I don't actually have bjam included in the PATH enviroment variable as I'm not sure how to do this in Linux so I just copied the bjam exe into the thread build directory - I doubt it but could this be the cause of the problem? BGL: Internal Compiler Error with VC++ 7.1

Hi, I'm getting the following error trying to iterate over adjacent vertices in boost_1_31 with VC++ 7.1: c:\boost_1_31_0\boost\mpl\aux_\preprocessed\plain\apply.hpp(50) : fatal error C1001: INTERNAL COMPILER ERROR (compiler file 'msc1.cpp', line 2701) I have noticed other similar problems reported in the list archive along with a request for a short example. Query re a Boost calculus library

Hi everyone - I'm a newcomer to this list (but have used Boost Spirit for a long time). I've looked through the various Boost libraries and have noticed that there seems to be one area of mathematics that isn't covered by the existing libraries : calculus (derivatives, integrals). So, my question is - is there a reason for this, or is it just that a suitable library for inclusion hasn't appeared yet? ( I'm aware of a possible one that could be put forward as a candidate, but I don't know if it's "OK" for me to suggest a library ). Many thanks in advance. - Andy

Hi, I have took a look at some parts of the boost library, but I couldn't find what I want, and that is something like this: How can I determine if a type T has such and such member? It would look like something like this: has_member<T, paint>::result (true if T::paint() exists) has_member<T, m_size>::result (true if T::m_size exists) The closest to this I could find is boost::type_traits but that does not provide this functionality. I'm seeing, what appears to me anyhow, rather strange behaviour with is_const and remove_const etc when used with arrays. Unfortunately that is impossible because templates can only manipulate constants, types and templates, not names. There is a technique that can be used to detect the definition of most operators, but it requires a separate template for each operator and it depends on being able to overload the operators through non-member functions. There may be a way to detect member functions but it cannot be done generically.

Hi, Please take a look at the code below. The point is that for_each_treenode calls for_each_treenode_child. It seems to me that bind(Print, ref(cout), _1)(&t); is not the same as Print(cout, &t); But if this is the case, how come that for_each_treenode_child(&t, bind(Print, ref(cout), _1)); compiles and works without problem? Boost.Threads && MFC?

Has anyone ever used Boost.Threads in combination with MFC? MFC requires that threads using MFC functionality be created with AfxCreateThread(). What I'm wondering is if it is safe to create threads using AfxCreateThread() (instead of the Boost.Thread functionality) but then use the Boost.Threads mutexs and locking mechanisms to manage the thread activity. >From my brief perusal of the source it looks like it might work. But I was hoping I could find someone who had actually tried it and might have some experiences to share. :) Any information greatly appreciated! Thanks! Tim.

Thread usage question.

Hello all, I am currently using Boost threads in a project I'm working on that involves a server/client type communications system. The project is a 3D renderer, the particular component is the communications between the renderer core, and any number of interested display clients, which are responsible for either displaying or storing the resulting image. Within the main program I have a listener thread that waits for requests from the display clients, and when it recieves one, launches another thread to handle the response. The responder thread can often just construct and send the response immediately. But if the request is for data that hasn't yet been rendered, it needs to wait for the data to be available. The responder is implemented as a class which has an operator() overload for the thread function. I would like for the responder thread to first query the system to see if the data is ready, and if not, block waiting for a signal from the system to indicate it is ready. So I need a way for the thread to 'register' it's interest in a particular data item with the main system, then wait for the signal. I presume there is a neat way of doing this using boost::mutexes and boost::condition's but I can't quite work out how, I freely admint I'm not very experienced when it comes to threaded programming. I've looked at the Boost bounded_buffer.cpp tutorial and it does something similar, but I can't work out how to apply the principles to my situation. Any help is greatly appreciated. The web site contains a bad link: http://lists.boost.org/mailman/listinfo.cgi/boost-announce directs you to http://lists.boost.org/MailArchives/boost-announce for the archives. That gives a 404 Not Found error. I think there was another bad link related to mailing lists, but I can't find it again. By the way, it would be good if the web site had where to send web-site related queries and bugs on the bottom of every page. As far as I could tell, this list is the place to go.

Date time Library: ptime and special_values

The documentation for the date_time library states that a ptime can be constructed from a special value e.g. ptime(special_values sv) ptime t1(neg_infin); ptime t2(pos_infin); ptime t3(not_a_date_time); However when I try this with the Cygwin GNU compiler I get a no matching function for call error (see errors below) Am I missing something here or is the documentation wrong? Compiling with "Visual C++ Toolkit"?

Has anyone already successfully built Boost with the "Visual C++ Toolkit 2003", aka the free command line version of VC 7.1? I adjusted VC71_ROOT and copied "vcvars32.bat" to "bin". Hi, We compiled the latest RegEx library on: 1. SunOS 5.8 Workshop 6: We used the sunpro.mak makefile. Unfortunately, we received many error messages regarding conversions from enum to int and vice versa. 2. HP-UX 11.11 aCC 3.33: We used the generic.mak makeilfe. We got an error regarding dynamic_cast from char*& to char*. In both cases, we didn't run the configure script in libs/config, because if we do, we get many compilation errors (probably because of the #define-s in the created user.hpp). Are you aware of these problems? or are we doing something wrong? Is it imperative that we run the configure script and not use the default user.hpp? On top of that, we managed to overcome the problems I mentioned by simply specifing explicit conversion and casting, and we compiled RegEx on Forte 6 with the 64-bit compilation flag. The compilation worked, but unfortunately, the tests failed. (I mean, the compiled okay and run, but they say that tests.txt contains errors - something that didn't happen when compiling the 32-bit version). What can we do to make it work in 64-bits? Bind and shared_ptr

Hi, The current bind defines the placeholder _1, _2 etc. I was wondering if there is another placeholder that will deference the placeholder if the container is holding pointers instead of copies? bjam failed to build (mingw)

Hi, I have updated from CVS today, set the dev-cpp bin directory into PATH and run: build.bat mingw. This build has failed, attachment '1.txt' contains stdout&stderr outputs. Then I set two additional environment variables: set MINGW_ROOT_DIRECTORY=C:\Dev-Cpp set BOOST_JAM_TOOLSET_ROOT=C:\Dev-Cpp\ and again run: build.bat mingw. Boost::tokenizer and reverse iterators

I'm using boost v1_31_0 and gcc v3.3.2 In experimenting with boost::tokenizer to meet a requirement that I have, I've tried hooking it to a reverse iterator. This act produced a run-time error. bjam hanging on MacOS X

I downloaded Boost 1.31.0 and built bjam with the build.sh script. Now, when I try to build boost with bjam -sTOOLS=darwin install, it just hangs, with no output to the console at all. Is there a way to set it into a verbose mode to see what's going on, or does anybody have any idea what's wrong? This is MacOS X 10.3.3 (7G33) on a 12" powerbook G4 (1.33Ghz) with the latest developer tools (7K249). -- Nick

Regex++ Installation Problems

Hi I had written earlier too regarding installation problems with the regex++...sorry for not providing the complete details last time..But I am again sending the errors... bjam build failed (winxp, mingw)

Hi, today I downloaded boost 1.31.0 and precompiled bjam. then I invoked bjam: cd C:\_projects\_coding\_sdk\boost_1_31_0 bjam -s"TOOLS=mingw" -s"MINGW_ROOT_DIRECTORY=C:\Program Files\Dev-Cpp" --prefix=C:\_projects\_coding\@mingw --with-python-root="C:\Program Files\Python23" --with-pydebug install and this was the output: ...patience... ...found 9330 targets... ...updating 3796 targets... MkDir1 bin spawn: No such file or directory I am new to jam/bjam. Can anyone help me with this problem? Thanks for your help, L.

I think in fact an exception is being thrown. Wrap it in a try block to find out what is getting thrown. Once you know, you will find that the code has traits to control the behavior in regards to non-standard naming conventions. Woolie

Calling thread::join from another thread?

Given a thread A created by a thread B. Is calling the join-method of A from a thread C a well-defined operation? (With C != B && C != A) It seems to work fine, but I want to make sure that this was not just 'luck'. Hi everyone! I wanted to create a hidden files (for configuration etc) by starting the filename with a dot on a Linux system. The following line aborts the program when filename is a std::string starting with a dot: > boost::filesystem::path filename_complete = basepath / filename; Are there any tricks for that? Thanks! Hah! I found the answer in a python mailing list from someone who was having trouble building the python part of boost in conjunction with stlport. I was testing out lexical_cast, and I would expect that for any value v of type T, it should be true that v == lexical_cast<T>(lexical_cast<string>(v)) but this does not appear to work for float or double in all cases. Hi, this inocent code throws an exception: static const regex rpath( "Return-Path:(.*?)Received: ", regex_constants::icase ); according to http://www.boost.org/libs/regex/doc/syntax.html this is how non-gready repeats are specified. Can anybody figure out what is wrong? Thanks Thorsten
