Hello, I am interested in using ublas for a large government project. I noticed ublas (as of 8-19-2004) failed test3 on the visual age c++ compiler. What does this test exercise? I've been looking at the Preprocessor appendix from the "C++ Template Metaprogramming" book (can't wait!) and see three different approaches to vertical repetition: local, file and self; however, I'm not clean on how to express what I want using these approaches. Another lambda question

I am getting another compiler error when trying to use the lambda library. Current experiment is string extraction. I'm trying to create a lambda(x) that pushes any char passed to it onto a particular string. string s2; void (std::string::*ft)(char) = &std::string::push_back; // extract function pointer because push_back is overloaded char c = 'n'; bind<void>(ft, var(s2), _1, 1)(c); // should push one 'n' onto the string. However, it doesn't compile bind<void>(reinterpret_cast<char(std::string::*)(char)>(ft), var(s2), _1, 1)(c); // error messages made me think it might be because push_back returns void // I know this isn't good practice, but I'm just trying to figure out what's wrong // However, this won't compile either. boost::graph adding verticies and edges whilst performing a dfs

Greetings all , I have a quick question regarding the boost graph library and depth first search operations. I have a very large graph , which has a visitor attached to the depth_first_search routine. The Visitor may add in more verticies / Edges when visiting an existing vertex in the Graph. (NOTE :: All the added verticies / edges from the visitor are guaranteed to be higher in the graph structure! i.e. the DFS algorithm would not have processed them at time of insertion. ) My question is can the depth_first_search handle changes to the Graph whilst it is performing its operation ? From my observations of the colour map used I dont think this is possible with the core depth_first_search routine in the library , could someone confirm this , and if anyone has ideas on how this can be performed I would be most grateful to hear their thoughts !

I've been experimenting with subgraphs. At present, they look quite useful in what I'm trying to do, but I've questions. If I add custom vertex and edge properties to my base graph, can I access these through a subgraph, using local vertex/edge descriptors? If not, is there a way of obtaining the mapping between global and local vertex/edge descriptors?

I've apparently succeeded in switching from external to internal properites in my application. However, I've done things in an OOP way, and would like to know if somebody can point out potential trouble. I've a class, called Graph, that inherits from the boost::graph object. The start of its definition is: class Graph : public GraphT { public: Graph(); // Graph Data accessor methods typedef boost::property_map<GraphT, vertex_Datum_t>::type VertexData; typedef boost::property_map<GraphT, edge_Datum_t>::type EdgeData; const VertexData& getVertexData(void) const {return vertexData_;} ... private: VertexData vertexData_; }; Note the typedef of VertexData. I initialize vertexData_ in the Graph constructor like this: vertexData_ = boost::get(vertex_Datum, *this); I've numerous methods like this in Graph: Vertex DataGraph::add_vertex(LayoutVertex *pLayoutVertex) { Vertex vertex = boost::add_vertex(*this); boost::put(vertexData_,vertex,Vertex_Datum(pLayoutVertex)); return vertex; } I guess my biggest concern is initializing vertexData_ once, before the graph has any data, and keeping it around though the life of the graph. Is this safe? Also, I expect clients of this class to be able to use the operator[] method via getVertexData(). Will this work?

problem compiling with threads and stlport

hi, I'm new to boost, stlport and programming on linux in general, so I apologise now for any obvious beginner errors! I'm using mandrake 10 and gcc 3.3.2, and using root I created STLport 4.6.2 libraries, and then created all the boost 1.31.0 libraries using bjam -sTOOLS=gcc-stlport -sBUILD="debug release <stlport-iostream>on" install I had to have this little lot in my bashrc file to do it; export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/usr/local/lib export STLPORT_VERSION=4.6.2 export STLPORT_ROOT=/home/ncain export STLPORT_LIB_DIRECTORY=/usr/local/lib export STLPORT_INCLUDE_DIRECTORY=/usr/local/include/ export PYTHON_VERSION=2.3 export PYTHON_ROOT=/usr Everything seemed to build ok, apart from an "../lib/libstlport_gcc_debug.so does not exist" error in the final part of the stlport build and a continual "warning: "_POSIX_C_SOURCE" redefined" warning during the boost build. Both the stlport and boost libraries are in /usr/local/lib ok, and building thread/test passed fine too. Hello, I have been using the spirit parser library, and other boost pieces (date, test, variant, ...), along with Mozilla. I recently merged in some parts of the application that were running separately, and the program started hanging. I did a bit of searching, but couldn't find anything significantly wrong, especially since the individual parts are working correctly. BLL and member variables

Hello, I really like the BLL and would like to use it as much as possible. I have run into a small problem though. For each element in v I want to insert a value and a key into the map something like this: void operator()(const A& a) const { m_.insert(std::make_pair(a.a_, a.b_)); } I found some information on how to use member variables as targets in the BLL documentation and that is what I have tried to use in the code above. We are using sequences of ~70 elements here at work (mostly in context of FSMs), but then we simply pre-generate them locally. Using external property map with a mutable boost.graph

I'm using a boost.graph via: typedef boost::adjacency_list<boost::vecS,boost::vecS,boost::bidirectionalS> GraphT; In my application, I've decided to use external maps. I have discovered a problem using vertex descriptors as a key of a map. Basically, in doing a remove_vertex sequence involving vertex descriptors 5, 3, 2, I discovered that the next vertex descriptor produced by add_vertex was 4. At this point the insert into my map failed because this element already existed. Given the mutable nature of vertex descriptors, I don't see how they can be used as a key in a map. I'm contemplating two options at this point. 1. Switch from map to vector in storing my vertex property externally. 2. Switch to internal properties. My questions are: 1. Is the first option viable? As I see things, vertex descriptors are always contiguous and in the range (0..num_vertices(graph)]. Is this true? 2. Do internal "maps" avoid this type of problem?

boost::thread callback copy problem

Hi, I am new to boost::thread but have come across the following problem and wondered if anyone could help... The problem is the copy overhead used by the boost::thread / boost::function0 code. The following code actually creates multiple copies of myclass rather than using a reference to myclass and due to the size of the class, this leads to a considerable overhead. I only noticed this problem because the thread kept failing due to the fact that my constructor held some socket initialisation code, which was being called multiple times. Is there a way that I can force the thread class to use references rather than copying? Looking at the code for the function library, I see that you can use boost::ref for function classes, any ideas as to how it can be used in the thread class? Given STL's habit of allowing people to specify an allocator, you could even go so far as to build a custom allocator that worked on some pre-allocated block of memory for your exceptions (strings, vectors, whatever you deem necessary). Either way, you'll run out of memory a little earlier (not a big issue in many environments), but you _will_ get to pocket the $200. Generative Programming book

The ISBN for the "Generative Programming" book is wrong. 0-210-30977-7 is incorrect 0-201-30977-7 is correect That book is used and described in the Boost "Feature Model Diagrams in text and HTML" page. Also, the Generative Programming web site isn't working for me, but perhaps the problem is only temporary. Note that I am not asking for help with any of that. I obviously already know what the correct ISBN is. I am posting this in case it helps others; the web page needs to be updated for the ISBN at least. The Boost "What to do about Boost bugs" page says to submit "a bug report to either boost-users list, boost mailing list, or our bug tracking facility at SourceForge" and that "either of the mailing lists is a preferred way". However it does not describe what a bug report is. If there is not a formal format, then I hope the above is adequate.

Boost Build, custom-built targets

Hello all- I'm currently using Boost Build v1 for some of my projects. I must say, it's significantly better than Makefiles. Overall, I'm quite pleased, though it took a little while to learn. I haven't been able to figure out one thing, though. How to generate custom built targets. Basically, I want to auto-generate a C++ source file so that I can keep track of version information. I have a python script that determines the version information from various sources (such as the revision control system [arch]), and I would like it to be run before my library is built. If I was using a makefile I would do something like this: .PHONY: version.cpp version.cpp: generate_version.py version ./generate_version.py This would cause version.cpp to be generated fresh each time the build process was called. However, I don't really need the ".PHONY", it would be okay if it was only created whenever one of the other files changed. There is no usages of any memory allocation or std::string like variables. If there are any 'oops' or 'gotchas' please let me know. My plan is to use a command flag for taking into a value. Hi I subscribed to this list to find out if I can publish one program containig "Boost Filesystem Library" under the GPL2. I saw that Boost license is even more flexible than the GPL2 but I'm not sure if I can release a program containing Boost with GPL2... anybody knows? where should I ask to answer my question? my case is that I'm developping a stand-alone console program which I want to integrate in other GPL licensed projects of web developpment like quanta.sourceforge.net or screem.sourceforge.net. I don't mind about modifying the licene of my program to adapt it to the special license of "Boost Filesystem Library" but I think it's inaffordable to modify all licenses of big projects like quanta or screem... so I'm a little bit confused. any idea? thanks in advance!

boost.graph build problem in latest anonomous CVS update.

I've just refreshed my boost via CVS and ran into a build problem with gcc v3.4.1. Initially, seems like everything failed on my system. However, I discovered that there is now a configure option :-) . After installing user.hpp where it does some good stuff, the bjam of the root of boost succeeded. However, in running bjam in $ROOT_BOOST/libs/graph/build. This Jamfile is configured to build both release and debug version of bgl-viz. It fails with similiar problems that I was getting elsewhere before I ran configure. I'm working on an application (a data analysis system built in C++) for which it would be helpful to have nested (multidimensional) containers other than ordinary arrays. I have defined a generic 'data' class which I like to store in std::vector<data *>'s. For a very simple example, a 'data' might be a double representing a student's score on an exam, or in more complex settings it might be some sort of spatial map, or a multidimensional set of records for a medical patient. I am interested in structures where 'data' is nested across multiple levels. For example, test scores are nested within students, students nested within teachers, nested within school districts, etc. For a single layer of nesting a std::map<std::string, std::vector<data *> > seems to be an ideal way to store such data, largely because text strings can be used to identify subjects: dat["johnny"] // returns a std::vector of pointers to johnny's test scores. This is often the way that data are stored in files to be analyzed. I'm looking for some sort of C++ container that is more convenient for multiply nested data than std::map<std::string, std::map<std::string .... , std::vector<data *> > > ... >, but which will allow me to write expressions like: dat["LAUSD"]["Central High"]["Ms. Jones' Class"]["Johnny"] // same vector as above. Can something like the Boost multi-array package be extended to handle this?

boost.graph question concerning edge descriptor details

I'm using gcc v3.4.1 and boost_CVS captured on Tue Jun 29 05:25:17 EDT 2004. I'm developing a boost.graph application that must deal with multiple graphs. The following typedefs describe how its using boost.graph: typedef boost::adjacency_list<boost::vecS,boost::vecS,boost::bidirectionalS> GraphT; typedef boost::shared_ptr<GraphT> GraphPtr; typedef boost::graph_traits <GraphT>::vertex_descriptor Vertex; typedef boost::graph_traits <GraphT>::edge_descriptor Edge; In addition, I have various maps that must act as a "bridge" between these graphs. I'm using the following typedefs as keys in such maps: typedef std::pair<GraphPtr,Vertex> ExternalVertex; typedef std::pair<GraphPtr,Edge> ExternalEdge; I've used ExternalVertex successfully in two different maps. Now I'm having trouble populating the first map that uses ExternalEdge. The compiler warnings that I'm getting sugguest that Edge does have an "operator<" method. Specifically its: error: no match for 'operator<' in '__x->std::pair<GraphPtr, Edge>::second < __y->std::pair<GraphPtr, Edge>::second' I'm wondering why Edge is different from Vertex. As you can see, as I've defined GraphT, both edge and vertex properties should be no_property. Any guidance that assists me to, at worst case, write a Compare operator for my "map<ExternalEdge,...>" containers would be appreciated.

Removing edges/vertices from a boost.graph object

I'm using boost.graph captured from CVS on Tue Jun 29 05:25:17 EDT 2004. The type of graph that I'm using is: typedef boost::adjacency_list<boost::vecS,boost::vecS,boost::bidirectionalS> GraphT; I need to trim vertex/edges that was moved to other graphs. I can't seem to do this. Calling remove_vertex appears to be a NOOP. The last thing I tried was: clear_vertex(*vi); remove_vertex(*vi); The gerdemann.cpp example gave me this idea. The clear_vertex did the job that I need in that the necessary edges disappeared. However, the remove_vertex still does not remove the vertexs. What do I have to do to get the ability to clear vertices?

Does using thread classes from boost need additional library files other than header files ? I am getting the following error when I use the thread class: /usr/include/c++/3.2.3/bits/stl_heap.h:188: undefined reference to `boost::thread::thread[in-charge](boost::function0<void, std::allocator<boost::function_base> > const&)' I also see 'libboost_thread-gcc-mt-d-1_31.so.1.3.0' library under boost/bin/... boost::filesystem problems

A few months ago I started to write my first multi-platform application. In the hope to be shielded from all kinds of filesystem specific issues, I started to use boost - also for the first time - mainly because of of boost::filesystem. However - I have found that it doesn't shield me from a LOT of filesystem specific things. In the meantime I was in the need of writing six additional functions that are filesystem specific: std::string native_file_string(fs::path const&); void copy_file(fs::path const& source_file, fs::path const& target_file); void chmod(fs::path const& filename, bool readonly); bool is_readonly(fs::path const& filename); void rename_file(fs::path const& source_file, fs::path const& target_file); size_t get_file_size(fs::path const& filename); Today I ran into a very serious problem. Hopefully it is just me who is making a stupid mistake (however unlikely that may sound ;) but it sure seems like a huge bug in boost::filesystem of a magnitude that not only amazes me but will also force me to stop using boost::filesystem if this is true. The reason that I didn't find this problem earlier in the pasts months is because so far I've done all development on GNU/Linux - and only recently have started to actually try and get things to work on cygwin. The reason I subscribed to this list is in the hope to find Beman here, is he reading this list? My hope is to start a public discussion about boost::filesystem - problems, improvements, missing features etc. I will sent a separate mail for the 'serious bug' that I just mentioned, because it isn't 100% sure yet that this is actually a bug ;). -- Carlo Wood <carlo(a)alinoe.com>

Hello, creating a custom build, I get lots of compiler errors during Boost.Python compilation. Some of these compiler errors are: c:\...\boost_1_31_0\libs\python\build\../src/numeric.cpp: Error E2231 C:\...\boost_1_31_0\boost/python/detail/value_is_shared_ptr.hpp 14: Member value_is_shared_ptr<X_>::value cannot be used without an object. Error E2299 C:\...\boost_1_31_0\boost/python/detail/value_is_shared_ptr.hpp 14: Cannot generate template specialization from 'mpl::bool_<C_>' Error E2040 C:\...\boost_1_31_0\boost/python/detail/value_is_shared_ptr.hpp 14: Declaration syntax error These error messages repeat in a lot of other files. Sometimes the compiler aborts compilation because of too many errors or warnings. The rest of boost seems to compile fine. Does anybody have an idea on how to solve this problem? Is this difficulty already known? I tried to compile with Python 2.3 at first but switched back to Python 2.2 because I read somewhere that there may be some problems with this version. But it did not solve the problem. I already tried to compile the current CVS Snapshot but it did not change a thing. My configuration is: - Python 2.2 - Boost 1.31.0 - bjam 3.1.10 - Windows XP - Borland C++ Builder 6 Personal Building Boost with: c:\...\boost_1_31_0>bjam -sTOOLS=borland -sPYTHON_ROOT=c:\...\python22 install I would appreciate any suggestions. Problems using custom iterator with std::partial_sort_copy

I have written a custom iterator based on boost::iterator_facade, and I'm trying to use this with the std::partial_sort_copy algorithm. However, when compiling with g++ I get an error message saying that there is no matching function for a call to counting_iterator(Vertex<3>&). The way I interpret this is that my code is trying to construct a Vertex_Iterator from a Vertex object, but that was not my intenton. Is there something obvious that I have missed in my definition of Vertex_Iterator, which should be a bidirectional iterator? A Vertex_Iterator iterates over the vertices of a mesh, and therefore it needs a pointer to the mesh in question. Does an iterator which returns a Vertex<3>& when dereferenced need a constructor which takes only a Vertex<3>& argument? If so, how can I supply it with the pointer to its parent mesh? Just playing with the kamada_kawai_spring_layout , so far for any non trivial graph (more then 4 nodes) - it seems to just go into an infinite loop. The graph is undirected but would contain "circular" paths - thoughts? Gordon.

The aim of boost::filesystem should be to support the following coding idiom: * The programmer should take care to only handle two types of paths in his application: 1) Complete paths 2) Relative paths * The programmer will have to specifically tell the libary when a constructed path is 'native' and when not. A native path is accepted according to native rules and never gives any problem (exceptions) further on. A non-native path is checked according to the existing rules, which basically means that the programmer can set a default check routine that will in effect determine how portable the application will be. I propose two design changes: 1) 'native' is now not only a representation, but an *internal state* of fs::path. (this has no effect on the representation as returned by fs::path::string()). 2) All 'complete' paths are automatically marked as 'native'. Examples, the following code is legal: fs::path p1("C:\foo\a.exe", native); // Fails on linux, success on windows. fs::path p2("/usr/src/a.out, native); // Fails on windows, success on linux. std::cout << p1.native_file_string(); // ok, p1 is native. fs::path p3("foo/bar"); // Relative path, always succeeds. std::cout << p.string(); // ok std::cout << p.native_directory_string(); // Useless, but ok. fs::path p4(complete(p3)); // p4 is now "native", because now it is complete. std::cout << p4.native_directory_string(); // ok And the following will throw: std::cout << p4.string() // Not allowed because p4 is native (complete). Question about static linking of boost

Thanks to Stephen for helping me get my boost to link. I feel bad for not thinking of this solution myself. I have one final question/suggestion about the getting started document (which I found to be very well written). I compile and install boost using the following command: tools/build/jam_src/bin.linuxx86/bjam "-sTOOLS=gcc" "-sBUILD=release <runtime-link>static" --prefix=$HOME/linux/lib/boost install My goal was to create a minimal set of boost libraries (basically, I just need the filesystem non-debug static version. I was surprised to find that the above command installs shared libraries for some of the libraries, and it also installs both the -s- version of the static libraries and the -sd- version. It seems to me that this might be a bug, since I specifically requested only the release version. Am I confused about the difference between release version and debug version? Also, I am confused about the meaning of the -s- flag in the runtime section of the filename. Why do we get libraries that are shared but have the -s- flag? That seems like a contradiction. Similarly, if I don't specify static linking using the -sBUILD option (I assume the absence of the -s- flag means dynamic implicitly), I still get static libraries (i.e. .a extension files). These files seem to be unusable more or less (when I try to link against them, the compiler uses the shared libraries instead even if they don't exist). Anyway, all this is not much use to me, since I have it working now, but maybe someone could add a bit of text to the getting started document explaining this. Using boost::date_time for timezones

Hello All, I'm new to Boost and interested in using it for timezone conversions but I'm not finding it terribly clear. An example, which works fine, uses something of the form: typedef boost::date_time::local_adjustor<ptime, -5, us_dst> us_eastern; 1. My problem is that I wish to use DST settings other than US and found definitions such as eu_dst_trait in local_timezone_defs.hpp but these seem unused and unusable. Would it require implementation of dst_rules.hpp type classes? If so, Boost would not give much advantage. 2. I would also have liked to specify dst & timezone combinations at run-time which dynamic_local_time_adjustor sounds like it might do - but it appears to have no members. 3. mpl::switch question

Hello, I've just tried to compile a small piece of code using mpl::switch_ starting from an example Aleksey Gurtovoy sent to this list a while ago. I slightly modified the code to use the boost::is_same<T,U> template but I can't make it compile. On the other hand, if I comment out the line in the switch_body containing the is_same template, it compile without any problem. I spent the whole day on this and I'm lost. Any help would be welcome. BGL-kamada_kawai_spring_layout

Just playing with the kamada_kawai_spring_layout, so far for any non trivial graph (more then 4 nodes) - it seems to just go into an infinite loop. The graph is undirected but would contain "circular" paths - thoughts? Gordon.

Additional information on linking problems

Hi, I have done some additional testing on th eproblem that I reported yesterday, and I have found that the problem I was having with static linking under gcc 2.95.3 also occurs on gcc 3.2.2. I get basically the same error message (see below). I guess that the reason I get the message for the static linking but not for the dynamic linking might be that the undefined references in a shared library are ok as long as those functions are not called. Is that correct? I looked at the code, and as far as I can tell, the functions that the compiler is complaining about are in fact defined. Does anyone have any suggestions? I've got a problem with gcc and stlport and boost: when I try to get a submatch on other platforms, I can take my match object, m, and do things like m[n].str(); // works great elsewhere But with gcc / stlport, with BOOST_NO_STD_ALLOCATOR not defined, the const_reference type is defined as Allocator::const_reference (which is `const char'), rather than sub_match<BidiIterator>. So operator[] gives me a char, and life isn't so good. Any hints as to where I went astray? Richard

RTTI for VC 6

VC 6 has an option for Run-Time Type Information (RTTI) that is normally off. I was able to compile and execute a sample program that had a problem. I noticed that Boost uses RTTI (such as the dynamic_cast operator), so I checked to see if the option was on; it was not. I turned the option on and the program worked. That problem is probably a known problem, but something such as the following can be added somewhere to not allow a VC 6 program to even compile if the RTTI option is off. I have more confidence in the developers that a solution is possible. I might have missed something, but I don't understand why it is relevant to say that it won't work. It might not work, but it might work. Yet you are saying it definitely won't work. That seems innapropriate to me.

Boost.Python 'Fatal Error'

Hello there, I've just started using Boost.Python, and find it absolutely invaluable. For the moment, my main task is embedding the python interpreter within an application of mine, and I have successfully built a small application that can load a module, execute a Python function and then collect the result. The next logical step was to extend the Python script somewhat into objects. I wrote some extra code in the script which I checked with the command line interpreter and verified to work. Before changing the C++ code to actually /use/ these new objects, I decided to just see what would happen if I kept exactly the same C++ code but with the new Python script (which still contains the function used for the last example). It ran fine - producing the correct output - but then exited abruptly with the following message: "Fatal Python error: PyThreadState_Get: no current thread". The changes to the original script file were the addition of two new classes - OptionsGUI and Button - and, oddly, commenting out Button makes the program work again (I say oddly because it's simply a class with a constructor, nothing more). Evidently I'm using the library incorrectly, and have searched through the documentation for things I might have done wrong but alas, I do find it rather daunting. I also noticed that my code is quite different from examples - is this a correct way to be doing things? And yes, at present, I'm not doing any exception or error handling - I'm a little unclear on it but I'm sure I will be able to do it given time :) For those wishing to look at the source, I have put the two files - EmbeddedPythonFunc.cpp and script2.py - in my webspace to prevent everyone having to download them as attachments. polymorphic container/boost::any

I'm quite sure that this problem has been addressed many times before, so I suspect it as a better name and I suspect that boost::any could be the solution. I want to store related types in the same stl container, for instance, this is the class heirachy I want: class tree { public: void grow() =0; }; class oak : public tree { public: void grow() { std::cout << "oak grows slowly" << std::endl; }; class pine : public tree { public: void grow() { std::cout << "pine grows quickly" << std::endl; }; Then, I try to put them in a std::list: std::list< tree > forest; forest.push_back(oak()); forest.push_back(pine()); ...and I find out that I can't define tree::grow as abstract. So I give it a dummy implentation -- void grow() { std::cout << "tree grows" << std::endl; --, and try to iterate over the objects: for(std::list< tree >::iterator iter = forest.begin(); forest.end() != iter; ++iter) { iter->grow(); } ...and I don't get what I expect: tree grows tree grows I then think about trying to use a std::list< tree& > and discover that it won't compile. I think briefly consider std::list< tree* > but decide this dosen't meet requirements of memory management. So I do some searching for 'polymorphic container' and 'polymorphic iterator' and come up with boost::any, but I've no luck in making it work. Attached is my code. In the end, I'm looking for a way to add related types to a stl container and not have to do anything complicated to call a method on the type's abstract interface and to not have to wory about memory management. problem with static linking on linux gcc 2.95.3

Hi, I am wondering if any of you boost gurus can help with this problem. I have compiled and installed boost using gcc 2.95.3 on a linux redhat 7 machine. The install actually fails on some targets. I get this message at the end of the install: ...failed updating 24 targets... ...skipped 48 targets... ...updated 2343 targets... But I am guessing that this is expected behavior for an old compiler. Anyway, I am interested in the filesystem library at this time, and so I tried compiling the simple_ls.cpp example. When I compile using the default linking (which uses shared objects), the program works fine, but when I compile using the -static flag to limit to static linking, I get a lot of undefined reference errors (see below). Unfortunately, I haven't been able to figure out why this would happen. Any suggestions on how to debug this or as to what might be going wrong would be greatly appreciated. You don't say *exactly* what the regex is that's causing the problem - it makes a difference - problems like this are usually caused by an expression that behaves badly with specific input (because regexes are NP-Hard to match in the general case). Boost.Regex will throw an exception rather than go on thrashing forever trying to find a match, but to determine whether this is the case here, you need to trap the exception at the point it's being thrown, and see if the regex lib is indeed the culprit, if it is, then refactoring the expression that you're using so that it's less ambiguous is usually the answer. Hi. In boost/graph/copy.hpp, besides the copy_graph function, I noticed a nice, undocumented function called copy_component which uses breadth-first search to copy a component from a graph to a new graph. Unfortunately, it doesn't work. I think there are at least two bugs in it: 1. The vertices are copied at the examine_vertex event point and the edges are copied at the examine_edge event point. However, the target of the edge has not yet been examined at that point, which leads to strange results. If the edges are copied at the black_target event point instead, the algorithm seems to work correctly. 2. The std::vector orig2copy is templated on the vertex descriptor type of the input graph, while it should be the output graph. The function copy_graph is correct here. Also, both copy_graph and copy_component by default assume the vertices have a vertex_all property and the edges an edge_all property, which are copied to the output graph. Wouldn't it be more intuitive to not assume and copy any properties by default? - Erik Jenelius

Regex problems, please help

Here is the problem: I want to find a simple regular _expression something like \\d\\d\\d\\d\\d\\d in a large file (15 mb) using VC++ 7.1 . I use Spirit's File Iterator as the input iterator for the search algorithm. After some seven thousands hits the match algo throughs the memory exhausted exception. So I cought the exception and moved the iterator by one, printed the location it points to in my searched file to view the problematic section for the regex find algorithm. compiling boost using Intel C++ 8.0 under Windows

I am havng problems building boost using the intel C++ 8.0 compiler. It looks as if bjam can't fine the icl.exe compiler executable itself. This file is installed under this directory C:\Program Files\Intel\CPP\Compiler80\Ia32\Bin Any ideas what I do wrong? I try this: run the iclvars.bat batch file. Random Library

Hi, I have a question about the random library. I'm using vc7.1 and I'm getting a warning when I include the random library. The warning I get when I, #include <boost\random.hpp> is: d:\includes\boost_1_31_0\boost\random\linear_congruential.hpp(233) : warning C4244: 'return' : conversion from 'boost::uint64_t' to 'boost::int32_t', possible loss of data When I look at the file, rand48::operator() returns an int32_t, but lcf is defined with uint64_t. Regex problem

Hello, I want to report a problem with Regex library. When extensive usage of regex_match and regex_search functions is done numerous times, then after several thousands iterations Regex library starts throwing "Regular expression too big" exception on the same regular expressions it worked perfectly with at several thousands previous iterations. Hi, After I discovered Boost, which has regex and filesystem libraries, I decided to use C++ for tasks that I usually do with Ruby (a Perl-like language), because I know C++ a lot better than other languages. However, there's a feature of those languages I miss: the ability to call external programs and get the output as a string. (newbie) design question (is there an MPL solution?)

I'm just now treading into the (rather intimidating) waters of template metaprogramming, so I'm not even sure if it will fit what I'm trying to accomplish. I need to create a kind of registry to keep track of instances of variables of different types (actually, several of these registries, representing different system states); variables of a type would be identified by an unique (integer) id. In other words, the variables within a particular registry represent the state of the system at a given point in time, so although each registry would have variables of the same types and ids, the values of the variables in different registries may be different. If the variables were all of the same type, a simple map would work. What I would like is a way of asking this registry for a variable of a specified type and id, and get back the appropriate instance (of the appropriate type). I.e., something like the following would be ideal: MyType mt = registry.get<MyType>(my_id); Is there anything in the MPL (or elsewhere in Boost) that might help me accomplish what I'm looking to do? If not, does anyone have any design suggestions to accomplish this in another way? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks, Tim

Newbie questions and possible bug reports

Hi, I am a new user to Boost, and I am trying to compile and install Boost for the first time. In the process, I have run into some problems that the Boost maintainers may be interested in. First, I was wondering if there is a specification as to which version of gcc the Boost libraries are known to compile with. In particular, I have a lot of code that only compiles under 2.95.3, and I get a lot of error messages when compiling. Here's an example: /usr/bin/objcopy --set-section-flags .debug_str=contents,debug "bin/boost/libs/test/build/libboost_test_exec_monitor.so/gcc/debug/shared-linkable-true/test_tools.o" ...failed gcc-C++-action bin/boost/libs/test/build/libboost_test_exec_monitor.so/gcc/debug/shared-linkable-true/test_tools.o... If it turns out that Boost is supposed to work with this version of gcc, I can provide more detailed results. I think that due to the failures, the libraries and include files were not installed by the bjam command. Second, I noticed that the zip version of the latest release 1_31_0 contains files that are in windows format (ie, the files contain carriage returns). I'm not sure whether this is intended, since most people who download the zip extension will use it on windows. However, if you try to install from a unix variant, you get very strange errors. Specifically, when running "sh build.sh" in the tools/build/jam_src dir, the program dies with: : command not found : command not found : command not found 'uild.sh: line 13: syntax error near unexpected token `() 'uild.sh: line 13: `echo_run () I don't know whether there are files with this problem outside the tools/build/jam_src directory. Finally, the link to the "boost public CVS repository" on the bug report instructions page (http://www.boost.org/more/bugs.htm) is broken. Sincerely, Daniel Huber

Problem compiling boost under gcc

Hi, This is a followup to my previous message. I must be doing something wrong, but I am unable to compile boost under gcc 3.2.2 on a Red Hat Linux machine (RH9 linux 2.4.24). Note, I also tried gcc 2.95.3 with the same results. If anyone has the time or the desire to help me out, it would be much appreciated. Here is what I did to install: First go to tools/build/jam_src and build jam: sh build.sh Then cd back to the boost root dir, and install: tools/build/jam_src/bin.linuxx86/bjam --sTOOLS=gcc --prefix=~/local/linux install I get a lot of errors relating to the HardLink command. (I am wondering if the problem might be caused by the bjam program.) I checked the things I thought might be causing problems: The target directory does exist, but the files are not getting copied into that directory (eg. by the FileClone command). bjam options

I agree with the "nuclear engineer" that the "Getting Started" instructions are a little confusing, but I think it is at least as good as (for example) the instructions for MySQL. There are a few things that are not clear, and I will post separate messages for most of them. One little detail is that the the "Getting Started" instructions use double quotes in the examples of the bjam options, yet as best as I can determine, the double quotes don't work. In other words, the following does not work: bjam "--help" And the following works: bjam --help It is true that there is an example showing the version that works, but I missed seeing it until I began writing this message and the other examples are confusing to the extent that they make it seem as if the double quotes are needed. So in other words, I don't understand why the double quotes are shown in the sample uses of bjam.

My Boost got built

Is there a description of what additional files need to be copied? I used the following to build Boost for Visual C++ with Windows XP: Call "S:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\VC98\Bin\VCVARS32.BAT" Set MSVC_ROOT=S:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\VC98 "S:\Software\Boost\boost-jam-3.1.10-1-ntx86\bjam" -sTOOLS=msvc --prefix="S:\ Software\Boost" --builddir="T:\boost_1_31_0\BuildDir" install Pause That seems to have worked. Except I did see some messages saying some stuff were not found. That is not relevant to this question, though. I copied the sample in the Variant documentation to get the directories set properly and ensure that that much (Variant) works. So now (I assume) I don't need to use most of the files (in the "T:" partition) that I used to build and "install" Boost from. However I see there are some documentation files in the "install from" files that are not in my installed files, so I assume I should copy the documentation files. I realize that the files are also online but I will use the local copy that is provided. Is there something somewhere specifying what else should be saved from the "install from" files? I intend to make the "T:" partition unavailable normally but I can keep it so that I can get to it when I need to, but it would help to know what I need to copy first. If this is not described anywhere, then I just want to say that it would help. Until then, I assume I can figure it out.

The definition of the terms "install" and "stage" is obviously clear to those that know what they mean, but it is not clear to me how they relate to Boost. I have worked with software for more than a quarter of a century, and I have even developed a couple of software promotion packagers, so I do have a basic understanding of the terms "install" and "stage". As best as I can guess, an "install" would be a combination of a "stage" and something else. So I assume I can do an install, but I might be wrong. So I think it would help to define those terms a bit more for the "Getting Started" page, for the benefit of all. For me, I have a Windows system and I have downloaded: http://aleron.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/boost/boost_1_31_0.zip I have unzipped that to a temporary location. It is not clear to me if that will work. I am not sure if I can do an "install" and have everything I need put in the location I specify for using Boost. If that is explained somewhere then I apologize for missing it, but I think it is not made very clear.

Boost Installation Help needed

Howdy, Sorry if this gets posted twice. i tried the webpage over at news.gmane.org, but it doesn't look like it got posted, so I subscribed(yay). Anyway, I'm trying to install Boost on Windows with the DJGPP compiler for c++. I've basically done nothing but get one big headache trying to follow the instructions at boost.org. So far, I have bjam in my windows\system32 directory. I tried to set it up to use DJGPP, a variant of gcc, but it doesn't seem to like my request. bjam keeps trying to use g++ instead of gpp, even though I gave it the GXX=gpp option. It also can't seem to find the directory of DJGPP, even though I used the GCC_ROOT_DIRECTORY=C:\DGJPP\ option as well. I am thoroughly stumped, and the documents over at boost.org seem to have been written by monkeys, albeit ones with good spelling and grammar. I am fairly computer literate, but those things are like rocket science to me(and I'm a nuclear engineer ;)) I'd use Boost.Build's .bat file, but I can't get bjam to work right, and then God only knows what I'll do from there, so I'd greatly appreciate a more "step-by-step" approach which is geared towards a WindowsXP user. mpl related question

Hello mpl experts, I'm trying to initialize the elements of an array using rules defined in a list of structures. The code below illustrate what I'm trying to achieve. The problem I have with this code is that the First_Descriptor structure contain this index member that will be used to access the right item of the array. This is not nice because it force the writer of this structure to deal with implementation details. Has anyone had success running the BGL from with managed C++ code? I have code that compiles fine, but at runtime throws a .Net exception called TypeLoadException. Googleing and documentation I have read are no help. I think typically the solution is to just prefix std:: to everything. Once you get used to doing it, it doesn't even seem cumbersome anymore. I was reading through the boost::shared_ptr source code, and I have a question about one small detail. Bidirectionnal filtered multigraph

I've created a bidirectional filtered multigraph from an adjacency_list with vectorS and listS as containers for the vertices and egdes respectively. It seems the function edge(u,v,g) does not work properly for this kind of graph. I can detect the existence of an edge (u,v) if I iterate explicitly through the out_edges of the filtered graph but not if I use edge() directly on the filtered graph. Also, I get an exception when I remove an edge that was invisible to the edge(u,v,g) function while the bidirectionnal version of remove_edge for adjacency_list is erasing the edge ID form the in_edge list of the graph. [BGL] Importing adjacency list from a txt file

Hi, I've got a file with the adjacency list of a graph, where each line contains the node index followed by the index of nodes that are adjacent to it (comma-separated). One of the lines of this file could read like: 1,3,4 This would mean that node '1' is adjacent to nodes '3' and '4' (undirected & unweighted graph). I'm declaring it as: typedef adjacency_list < vecS, vecS, undirectedS, no_property, no_property > Graph; Graph g; My question is: is there a simple way of reading the adjacency list into the graph from my txt file? I found Kevin_Bacon, but was looking for something more powerful. Then I found adjacency_list_io.cpp (is it documented?), but it wouldn't compile on MSVC. Am I missing something obvious? Thanks, Rui

bind and weak pointers

What is the prefered method of creating a boost::function<void()>, via boost bind, that is calling a member function of a class, and that class instance is held inside the bind object as a weak ptr. Thus, when the function is called, it will try to lock the shared_ptr, if successful it calls the bound function, otherwise it does nothing. Is there an standard way of doing this? Or do I have to write my own custom intermediate function? (which is how I do it now). Jeff

lambda and shared_ptr

Hello boost-users(a)lists.boost.org, It seems to me that currently lambda's bind does not support shared_ptr as a second argument to bind, when first argument is a pointer-to-member. But boost::bind handles it perfectly. It would be nice for me to be able to write something like this: using namespace boost::lambda; struct SomeClass { int member1; }; boost::shared_ptr<SomeClass> ptr(new SomeClass); (bind(&SomeClass::member1, ptr) = _1)(5); Is it possible with current implementation of lambda? Accessing Internal Properties

I'm using BGL checked out of CVS on Tue Jun 29 05:25:17 EDT 2004. Also using gcc 3.4.1 on a linux machine. I've a question of how to access internal properties. It appears that there are basically two templated function families for this: get - returns a value get_property_iter_range - returns iterator range get_property - returns a reference Are there more? I'm interested in the later. I've seen in the examples get_property being used to access properties global to a graph, but not edge or vertex properties. What I'd like to see is a varient of get_property (or equivalent) that takes an edge descriptor, so it provides access to a particular edge's named property. Does what I'm looking for exist?

boost.graph external properties question.

HI, I'm starting a project that uses boost.graph and I'm trying to decide if I should use internal or external properties. My code that implements external properties is like, for example: typedef boost::graph_traits <GraphT>::vertex_descriptor Vertex; typedef std::map<Vertex,Vertex_Datum,ltDescriptor<Vertex> > VertexData; My question is: Given my use of Vertex as a key of a std::map, it needs to be unique. Is this uniqueness quality maintained across different graphs? That is, can I instanciate 2 GraphT objects and populate both, but maintain only one VertexData container? Assume that I am not defining any internal properties in GraphT.
