No defines using bjam on Windows with msvc

As I said in an earlier post, I'm trying to start using jam for our projects. I'm using Boost.Jam ver 3.1.4. When I build on Windows with TOOLS=msvc and use "bjam -d2", the command-line doesn't have any define flags on it. Several of our source files rely on "WIN32", e.g. to determine the platform. Has anyone seen this before? I feel like I'm overlooking something obvious, but I haven't been able to figure it out. I understand what you mean now. In that case you would need to pass the filter name into the DSO function as a parameter. So your DSO declaration would look like... If it 2byte why are you using boost::char_separator<char>? Shouldn't you be using boost::char_separator<wchar_t>? I think Lee Joo-Young is talking about multibyte strings in an encoding such as GB2312 and Shift_JIS that uses 1 or 2 bytes per character rather than wide strings that use a fixed 2 bytes per character on certain platforms (or rather, used to until UTF-16 came along). boost::serialization problem, derived class through shared_ptr

I'm trying to serialize a derived class through a shared_ptr<> to the base class. I'm getting an unregistered class exception even though my derived class is registered with register_type<>. It seems the exception is being thrown while trying to serialize boost::detail::sp_counted_base which I believe is part of shared_ptr. Could this be an internal error in the serialization library?

Hi, I am trying to use the regex library (regex_match in particular) I included "boost/regex.hpp". Thanks for the quick response. Do you know of a workaround that is being used for version 1_31. All the examples say include "boost/regex.hpp". Is there some way I can include the headers so the problem will go away. What's really strange is that I compiled the entire library using the Jam method, and it I got these regex errors. I then compiled the regex libraries using the gcc make file, and use the static libraries when I compiled. It worked. But after I made some more code changes (not regex changes) to my application and recompiled, I started getting the errors again. I thought the gcc compilation fixed it, but it didn't. Anyway, if you could tell me a workaround that would be great. Is it just a matter of trying to include the regex.hpp header first before the regex.h header gets included, have other people seen this problem in the regex library? Boost problems

Hey boosters, We have found some problems with the following files: boost_1_31_0/libs/regex/src/cpp_regex_traits.cpp boost_1_31_0/libs/test/src/test_tools.cpp They use definitions from <ios> but never actually include it - they are relying on the fact that in some STLs the headers are pulled in by other header files. Unfortunately, under our STL (RW STL 6.0) this is not the case and hence the files fail to compile. Add the following include line to both to fix the problem: #include <ios> There is another STL related problem in boost_1_31_0/boost/regex/config/cwchar.hpp which manipulates some macros such as iswalnum etc. These are originally pulled in from <wctype.h> and <wchar.h> under /usr/include. With gcc, <cwctype> and <cwchar> undefine these macros as the first thing, however, our STL's headers don't. That leads to compilation errors from the above header. To fix this, add #undef iswalnum #undef iswalpha #undef iswblank #undef iswcntrl #undef iswdigit #undef iswgraph #undef iswlower #undef iswprint #undef iswprint #undef iswpunct #undef iswspace #undef iswupper #undef iswxdigit #undef iswctype #undef towlower #undef towupper #undef towctrans #undef wctrans #undef wctype when RW STL 6.0 is being used. The final problem is more of a feature request: In our environment, we build all shared objects with all external references unresolved, so that a .so A never depends on a shared library B. The symbols get only resolved once the final executable is linked. This causes us problems with boost when building the regression tests, as the final Jam link rule adds all additional libraries *before* the final libboost_*. That way, we end up with unresolved symbols to e.g. our STL. Is there any way in which this requirement could be incorporated into Boost.Build? I guess a simple solution would be to have another variable called e.g. ADDITIONAL_LIBS_LAST which would be passed as the last thing on linker line in the link rule. Changing this to C:\Temp could cause problems for users w/out admin privileges. I've no problems with vc7.1 builds, and I imagine a lot of others utilize the same platform and can build as well. So it's not a general problem. The possible sources of this problem could be: - some odd access settings on the directory ( can even occur with admin privilege) - a lot of files in the temp directory from other misbehaving app's - environment variable definitions were mucked up by manual editing - generally mucking about with these dir's by the user can cause problems Jeff F

boost.mem_fn with _com_ptr_t

Hi, I am trying to use com smart pointers with boost::mem_fn I defined the following so that mem_fn would know about _com_ptr_t s: template <typename Interface> inline typename _com_ptr_t<Interface>::Interface* get_pointer(_com_ptr_t<Interface> const& p) { return p.GetInterfacePtr(); } but when I use the function object returned from boost::bind, I get a null pointer in my _com_ptr_t ADODB::_RecordsetPtr recordSet(__uuidof(ADODB::Recordset)); ... boost::bind(&ADODB::_Recordset::Close, recordSet)(); The problem seems to be in mem_fn_template.hpp The function class BOOST_MEM_FN_NAME(mf0)::operator()(U &u) const calls BOOST_MEM_FN_RETURN call(u, &u); and _com_ptr_t::operator&() calls _Release() and sets m_pInterface = NULL; Is there any way to get this to work correctly? On the prompt I am able to run "cl, link, nmake" without any problems (i.e. path is set correctly by vcvars32.bat). - Murali

boost.graph, subgraph questioon

I'm using boost 1.31.0. I've experienced and observed that other fokes found this problem with subgraphs and internal properties. Derived subgraphs only get internal properties produced by default construct. What I'd like to know is if adding an edge to a derived subgraph via: add_edge(vertex_descriptor u_local, vertex_descriptor v_local, const EdgeProperty& p, subgraph& g) will get the property sent to the ancestor graphs? Are there any other "bugs" associated with adding edges/vertices to a derived subgraph?

sort implementation based on swap

I know this is kinda off topic. I am trying to sort some objects which are expensive to copy. Does anyone know a sort implementation that uses neither copier nor assignment? The STLport version I have is using both. Worse, some routines are passing arguments as T instead of const T &. I did search boost and google but I couldn't find what I want. Thanks in advance. Building boost graph library for Visual C++ 7.1

Hi, I have performed a fresh install of Boost 1.31.0 under Windows (Visual C++ 7.1) and everything built and installed OK except that the Boost Graph Library libraries needed for GraphViz interface (libbglvis.lib) were not built or installed. Does anyone have any suggestions for building this library? I am not familiar with the jam file format. Thanks, Brian Parker

BGL Graph Strong Components with VC 6

Greetings all , I know this is an odd question especially as the current version of the boost graph library is completely unuseable with VC 6 , but I am using boost_1_27_0 atm , and using the depth_first_search without problems , I have the requirement to also use the strong_components( calls but unfortunately all I get is INFERNAL COMPILER ERRORS ... sorry that should have read INTERNAL ;) ..... does anyone know of a version of the BGL where dfs , and strong_components worked on VC 6 , or a url where i can get archived test results from previous boost builds on specific compilers ? Before I get the string of update to vc 7.1 , I'd love to but my hands are tied :( MTIA

Compiling for Solaris, gcc, and STLport

On attempting to link against the boost_regex libraries, I'm finding that regex methods and template functions that take wchar_t are not resolving. Examining the libraries with nm show that these methods are not present. My understanding is that wchar_t support for Solaris was only recently introduced in version 3.4.x, so I wondering if the bjam files are taking this into account yet. I'm currently specifying the build with the following invocation: # bjam "-sTOOLS=gcc-stlport" "-sBUILD=release debug <cxxflags>-fPIC" Can I add to this to force the build to use wchar_t? Building libraries on Mac with CodeWarrior 9?

Hello, I haven't been able to find an answer in the archives. I had no problems building boost using bjam for the darwin (gcc) toolset, but have had no luck with CodeWarrior. I posted to the jamboost list, but received no response, so I'm hoping this is the right list! I have: CW 9.2 OS X 10.3.5 boost_1_31_0 boost-build boost-jam-3.1.10-1-macosxppc When I call bjam from the command line, both cwpro9 and cw toolsets (cw-tools.jam downloaded from CVS) result in the same errors: all the codewarrior jam files use -warn when the option should be -warnings, and there is no keyword "nounusedexpr". I edited one of the jam files to change -warn to -warnings and commented out nounusedexpr, but then greg_month.o doesn't get built and subsequently none of the libraries: Error : Nothing to do: no source or object files specified Then I tried a suggestion I saw in the archives - created an empty project for a static library in CodeWarrior and added the files in /boost_1_31_0/libs/regex/src/. I've built and installed boost on a Mac OSX system (with the 'darwin' toolset). I would like to use static linking. However, the installer is only building the .dylib version of libboost_thread and not the .a version. I thought only Win32 was forced to use dynamic linking? Is there a similar issue on OSX? help with regex library matching

I have having a problem determining if the regex library is working properly. I have run the regex regression tests, and all tests in the test.txt file pass. My problem however began with the following match: string: "orange and ba.ana and kiwi" expression: "\\.([a-z]+).*[ \t\n].*\\.([a-z]+)" expected result: match, captures 'range' and 'ana' real result: no match The code in question is this: bool result = false; std::string str = "orange and ba.ana and kiwi"; std::string exp(".([a-z]+).*[ \t\n].*\\.([a-z]+)"); try { boost::smatch what; boost::regex e(exp.c_str()); // use default format flags result = regex_match(str, what, e); if (result) { ... } } catch (std::runtime_error &e) { ... } ... It seems to consistently fail. This same example works in both Java and Perl, and with the PCRE C++ regex library. No exception is being caught either. I posted the actual code to show that i don't think i'm doing anything particularly unique - i call regex_match (though even regex_search fails to match). I even tried formatting a file for the regression test harness with this example, and it confirmed that this particular example does not succeed. Can someone please provide suggestions regarding: a) what is going wrong b) how to fix it It should be noted that i'm running linux, boost version 1.31.0, with the regex patch installed. Thanks.

I'm attempting to compile against the boost_regex headers on Solaris 2.8, using gcc and STLport. Hi I am trying to build a test program that comes with the Genserial library (http://genserial.soureforge.net) which uses boost. I get the following error while linking: test fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'libboost_unit_test_framework-vc71-sgd.lib' This library seems to be included because of these lines in one of the cpp files: #include <boost/test/unit_test.hpp> using boost::unit_test_framework::test_suite; I verified that the file does exist in boost\lib however the naming is different, it has a version number suffix to it "libboost_unit_test_framework-vc71-sgd-1_31.lib'" hence the problem with the linker. Boost.Build Main vs. exe

There seem to be two different general approaches to using bjam. One is to use "objects" such as /Main/ and /Library/. This is described here: http://www.boost.org/tools/build/jam_src/Jamfile.html The other approach is to use "rules" such as /exe/ and /lib/. This is described here: http://www.boost.org/tools/build/v1/build_system.htm Am I correct in viewing these as separate approaches that I am free to choose between? Hi, I'm failing to build either bjam or (eventually, I got the binary) the boost library. I'm using Win 2K, VC++ 6, boost 1.31.0. In setting environment variables, I set MSVC, but couldn't figure out VISUALC (since I don't have a VC++ directory). When I try to build, I get: D:\boost_1_31_0>bjam "-sTOOLS=msvc" install [ Fails to find PYTHON ] ...patience... ...found 7592 targets... ...updating 3079 targets... I have built and installed boost on Mac OSX (using the 'darwin' toolset). I've noticed that the libboost libraries that are built don't follow the boost naming conventions. Specifically, they don't include the 'osx' toolset identifier as specified in the 'Getting Started' documentation at http://boost.org/more/getting_started.html#Results Is this a known issue? Building Boost on Mac OS X

I've been trying to build boost-1_31_0 on Mac OSX (10.3.5). I first tried with the default compiler, and then I installed XCode 1.5 to get gcc build 1666, which seems to be what is listed on the main site. After all this, the problem I get is: c++ unrecognized option `-shared' As near as I can tell, it builds everything except for the shared libraries. I would really prefer to use the shared libraries, though if I can get my program to compile against the static it probably would be okay. Does anywone know of a workaround? I read something online that said "try using -G instead of -shared", but that just gave me -G as an unrecognized option. I'm trying to build CVS right now, but I don't know how stable/etc it is. I would much rather use a release, because if I download it later, I know it will still be the same code. Any pointers would be appreciated. John =:->

Is this a Unicode build? I'm assuming not, since you don't cast the result of GetBuffer, but your code will not work properly with Unicode. In any case, you don't need to use GetBuffer to get a pointer (const TCHAR *) to the buffer; just cast to LPCTSTR (which works for either Unicode or multibyte). It also might help to know what version of Visual Studio you're using. And if you define something like AC_ARG_ENABLE(debug,....), thus defining enable_debug variable, the m4 will select the debug/release libraries whether enable_debug is yes or no. Then you should put AM_CPPFLAGS=@BOOST_CPPFLAGS@, LIBS=@BOOST_LIBS@ (or @BOOST_LIBS_R@ if you want the recurrent (thread-safe) version of the libraries) somewhere in a Makefile.am That's it... Look in Project/<project name> Properties. In the resulting dialog, pick General under Configuration Properties. In the listbox on the right, look at "Character Set", which will tell you whether or not you are using Unicode. I think that Visual Studio defaults to Unicode builds these days, so you should really check this to make sure. A binary dump of the contents of temp2 after the GetWindowText call might be helpful (binary dump so that we can tell if it's Unicode or not). Try this block of code in place of your original: //m_scanPath is a control variable for the textbox containing the directory. Help with Path Constructor

My MFC has a text box that stores the result from a "choose directory" dialog box. I encounter problems when I try to create a path object from the value of this textbox. The debugger shows the value of scanPath (what I call my path object) to be "" which is then causing hangs and exceptions... Below is the code I am trying to use. I do not see why the constructor will not recognize the parameter I am passing to it: //m_scanPath is a control variable for the textbox containing the directory. I just started using the boost. For my project I need to install boost -1.30.2 But I am getting some issues in the installation. I will tell you the steps I did over here 1. run the build.bat in boost-jam-3.1.10 2.build vcvrs32.bat in ../vc7/bin 3. Change dir to the dir ../boost.1.30.2 4. Then did C:\NonProject\technical\DOC_NET\Boost\boost-1.30.2>bjam "-sTOOLS=vc7" install --------------------------------------------------------------------- skipping Boost.Python library build due to missing or incorrect configuration couldn't find Python.h in "/usr/include" You can configure the location of your python installation by setting: PYTHON_ROOT - currently "/usr" PYTHON_VERSION - The 2-part python Major.Minor version number (e.g. "2.2", NOT "2.2.1") - currently "2.2" The following are automatically configured from PYTHON_ROOT if not otherwise set: PYTHON_LIB_PATH - path to Python library object; currently "/usr/libs" --------------------------------------------------------------------- don't know how to make install ...found 1 target... ...can't find 1 target... boost signals dll does not export all functions

Dear all, Probably already a known problem, but if one uses the signals library as a dll, the dll does not contain all exports (e.g. signal_base_impl::~signal_base_impl()). Tracking this down it looks like that the file 'signal_base.cpp' does not see that it has to create exported functions. This is due to the fact that 'BOOST_HAS_DECLSPEC' is not defined, which is defined a compiler specific header file ('visualc.hpp'). However another cpp file from signals, 'connection.cpp', does create exported function. Thus as a work around I added '#include <boost/signals/detail/signals_common.hpp>' as first include in 'signal_base.cpp' (and also to the other cpp files of signals) and bjamed again. Will this issue resolved in the next release? Wkr, me

Directory_Iterator -> hangs app

I am still stuck with this issue of a directory_iterator causing a hang when it is declared. This is one of the most bizarre things I have ever encountered. Some more clues have arisen since my last post: - Upon hanging, I now get a message box: Unhandled exception at 0x77e73887 in PICtool-w32.exe: Microsoft C++ exception: boost::filesystem::filesystem_error @ 0x0012f170. I seem to be getting *somewhere* although the message seems very vague. - Upon executing the app in the explorer (not MSVC), I get a Runtime Error: The app has requested runtime to terminate in an unusual way. - I ran Spy++ and see to get quite a few WM_GETDLGCODE messages. I have read that this can signify a problem. Has anybody else had a problem like this with the directory_iterator? Any help or suggestion is greatly appreciated as I have been stuck for quite a while. :-( FYI: MSVC .NET 2003, running as Multi-Threaded Debug DLL using the multi-threaded version of the Boost::Filesystem library. Unit Test Framework for non-boost projects?

I believe I figured out how the examples in the 'subproject libs/test/example ;' are being compiled. Basically it goes like this: bjam reads the Jamfile which contains this rule: rule boost-test-example ( example-name : lib-name ) { exe $(example-name) : $(example-name).cpp <lib>../build/$(lib-name) : <sysinclude>$(BOOST_ROOT) <stlport-iostream>on <borland><*><cxxflags>-w-8080 ; } followed by a series of invocation of that rule such as: boost-test-example unit_test_example1 : boost_unit_test_framework ; The rule is evaluated by putting the first argument 'unit_test_example1' in the slot for the target name, and for the sources required to build. In addition to unit_test_example1.cpp, the expression <lib>../build/$(lib-name) is evaluated to add the library resulting from compiling other source files. These are named by reading $(BOOST_ROOT)/libs/test/build/Jamfile and expanding the target: lib boost_unit_test_framework : <template>boost_test_lib ../src/$(UTF_SOURCES).cpp ; The <template> adds some boiler-plate information and the ../src/$(UTF_SOURCES).cpp expands the following list: UTF_SOURCES = execution_monitor test_tools unit_test_parameters unit_test_log unit_test_monitor unit_test_result unit_test_suite unit_test_main supplied_log_formatters ; to create a list of file names of the form: ../src/execution_monitor.cpp If the library does not already exists, these are compiled, and the results are placed in the location specified by this directive: install test lib : [ unless $(NT) : <dll>boost_prg_exec_monitor <dll>boost_test_exec_monitor <dll>boost_unit_test_framework ] <lib>boost_prg_exec_monitor <lib>boost_test_exec_monitor <lib>boost_unit_test_framework ; Since they have already been compiled, bjam tells the compiler to link against them. After rebuilding all of boost and installing the headers and libraries to the default location, I am now able to compile one of the examples as follows: g++ -o unit_test_example5 unit_test_example5.cpp\ -lboost_unit_test_framework-gcc I don't fully understand why I need the -l switch, but adding it enabled the linker to succeed. I assume I could find a way to modify the above mentioned Jamfiles to do basically the same thing in my project directory, but the step of specifying the sources with which to build the libraries seems inappropriate for using the Unit Test Framework in my own project. constant size arrays - why never a simulation of push pop?

Maybe there is a good reason for this, but I've often wondered why there is no version of constant size arrays that support push_back() and pop_back(). In the past I've wanted to use a c_array in situations, but couldn't because at some point I wanted to use an algorithm or template function that used push/pop. So I end up using vector/reserve. I can't think of any problem off the top of my head. Seems like just some management of current size(), iterator manipulation etc. Maybe there is some reason I've never seen this or perhaps there is something I'd run into if I tried to roll my own based off of boost::array or c_array? ublas identity_matrix problem

Dear all, I discovered a problem in ublas identity_matrix class. I am doing linear algebra in finite fields. So my matrices contain no floats nor doubles. Instead I use some class that behaves like a number but does arithmetic in a finite field. Class instances are contructable by int, but _not_ default constructable by int. I don't want to have this. In matrix.hpp one finds the lines template<class T> typename identity_matrix<T>::value_type identity_matrix<T>::zero_=0; template<class T> typename identity_matrix<T>::value_type identity_matrix<T>::one_=1; These lines are problematic and the reason why my number class works not with the identity_matrix class. Hi, I wonder if it's possible to handle dynamically created program options with boost::program_options. For instance: I have a config file that specifies configure options for dynamic loaded modules in my project. So the cfg file would be: [module.foo1] module_file = foo.so listen_port = 564 enabled = true [module.foo2] module_file = foo.so listen_port = 565 enabled = false [module.bar1] module_file = bar.so listen_port = 145 enabled = true As can be seen, foo1, foo2 and bar1 names are defined by the user in the configure file, and the program doesn't know about them before parsing the configuration. But if we parse that (somehow), an exception saying that the option "module.foo1.module_file" is invalid will be thrown. Can I manage the options_description "on the fly"? Another less complicated situation would be something like this: modules = foo1 foo2 bar1 [module.foo1] . . . [module.foo2] . . . [module.bar1] . . . So when parsing the "modules" option, we would know the new options name and it would be a matter of appending more option descriptions to the object. Regards, rod

Is there an easy way to get a single signal to call the alternate() function of both Hello and World? I recently found this signal slot solution. http://www.codeproject.com/cpp/ElmueSignalsandSlots.asp There is an extra level of indirection here, in that you define a slot that points to the function. I'd be interested to see what people on this forum think about this solution. If I understand things correctly, this solution doesn't seem to fit into the categories listed in the "Choice of Slot Definitions" docs. Also a general signal slot question. Angus- I had similar problems with bjam under MinGW. By experimentation, I discovered that I could make bjam work under MinGW by moving it from it's previous location at 'c:/msys/1.0/bin' to 'c:/msys/1.0/mingw/bin'. I've installed MinGW and MinSYS. The MinGW tools are in my path. (From my understanding of the docs at http://www.boost.org/tools/build/v1/mingw-tools.html, that shouldn't be necessary.) I have changed the TOOLS name to 'mingw' rather than 'mgw'. Again , no dice. Finally, in desperation, opening up a DOS prompt and repeating the exercise. Nope. Same result. Can anyone help me out? Regards, Angus

problem with CVS Boost.Python with MSVC

The CVS change to boost/boost/python/detail/prefix.hpp from revision 1.3 to 1.4 has obviated the effect of boost/boost/python/detail/wrap_python.hpp in _DEBUG when compiling with MSVC. Python now forces the debug library as if BOOST_DEBUG_PYTHON is permanently in effect. Revision 1.3 does not exhibit this problem. The added #include <pyconfig.h> is the cause. Stephen D Evans

Dear all, In my work I use the boost libraries quite frequently, especially boost::bind to create function objects. However its use is not as transparent as I hoped for. Especially using functions in boost bind with signatures returning const& can give unpredictable results. For example: struct KX { KX (int i); //etc. }; typedef std::pair<int, KX> pair_t; pair_t do_kx_pair(int i) { return std::make_pair(i, KX(i)); } //following will go wrong: KX x = boost::bind(&pair_t::second, boost::bind(&do_kx_pair, i))(); The last line compiles on Visual .NET 2003 without any warning (even on level 4). However after spending two days in boost bind source code, I could see that it actually returns const& to a temporary created by boost bind. The reason for this is that arguments are copied by value, and thus functions with const & (or in this case pointer to member) can return then const & from temporaries. Is there no way that at least boost::bind could issue a compiler warning? Because now I have to think deep before I create a nested boost bind construction. For example the following construction is not wrong; the const & is again taken from a temporary which boost::bind holds, but this is destroyed after the expression: KX x = boost::bind(&pair_t::second, do_kx_pair(i))(); If this is not solvable, perhaps it's a good idea to include this case in the documentation. Wkr, me (btw boost::bind is a great improvement over the std::mem_fun and std::bind1st etc.)

I have trouble compiling code that makes use of the boost::format library. In particular I get compile errors from basic_format::operator= method (line 90 format_implementation.hpp). If I change the body to look like if(this == &x) return *this; basic_format<Ch, Tr> x1(x); // These 2 lines used x1.swap(*this); // to be 1 return *this; It compiles. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Directory_Iterator causes MFC App to Freeze

Hi, I am writing an MFC program in MSVC7 that must pass a path from one dialog box to another upon pressing a button. I attempt to pass the path to the next dialog by using a directory iterator: fs::directory_iterator startIt(scanPath); (***) where scanPath is an object of type path. PICtoolProgressWnd temp(this,startIt); I pass the iterator into the constructor for the second dialog. When I attempt to run this program, my program just hangs after clicking the button and I cannot exit it. The second dialog never appears. The only way out is to Alt-Ctrl-Delete out of the program. The only other clue given is that when the program freezes, the "xstring" file opens with a green arrow pointing at what appears to be a definition of operator= or something of that sort. I have commented out practically all of my code in the button click event handler and determined that when the iterator is declared, (***) above, the program freezes. When this line is commented out, the program responds. What could I be doing wrong?? Using MPL to write is_derived_from_std_basic_ostream

I'm trying to ascertain whether a given class is, or is derived from, std::basic_ostream, but I've ground to a halt. The attached code successfully reports those classes that do derive from std::basic_ostream but fails to compile when I test std::string, bool, char etc. I can see what is going wrong, but have run out of ideas about how to fix it. I'm also painfully aware that my attempts are just plain ugly. Can someone show me the way forward? Regards, Angus

I've got some code that uses the format library to format output, not out of necessity, but rather out of a wanton enjoyment derived from using the syntax, having lately (relatively) discovered boost, prefering the boost::format simple syntax to the posix printf and std::ostringstream flavored solutions. Problem using Boost Signals HPP file

I am using vc7.1 MS Visual Studio 2003. I have tried using the boost signals (boost/signal.hpp) library in both my application and a Visual Stuido project file using the signal_test.cpp file. (made a blank C++ win32 console app project file- and then added the include dir for boost- I did nothing else). in either case I get: Compiling... signal_test.cpp Linking... LINK : fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'libboost_signals-vc71-sgd-1_31.lib' Build log was saved at file://c:\Rmtg\Root\_Common\_Lib\Boost\V_1_31\libs\signals\test\signal_test\signal_test\Debug\BuildLog.htm signal_test - 1 error(s), 0 warning(s) ---------------------- Done ---------------------- Build: 0 succeeded, 1 failed, 0 skipped My project file is quite bare other than pointing to boost as an include dir. I am perplexed on how visual studio is even AWARE of the lib name (since I did not tell it). On the machine I am using, I have not built boost static or dll libs. That would solve my problem, but not completely as what I *need* to do is use the hpp and *not* link to the lib. My questions: has anyone run into this before? Is Boost::signals supposed to work by just being able to #include the hpp? Any thoughts here? (one of those situations where I am really scratching my head). **ANY** thoughts or suggestions greatly appreciated

generic factory creator

In my example data is passed between objects using a Data_Source. I want to hide the method data is passed from what the value is of the data. So a object receiving it does not need to be concerned with whether the data is coming from a file or database. In my situation I have three data sources for information: a file, memory pointer or database. Each of these data sources can handle a std::string, a Memory_Object, and a Graph_Object type as its internal data structure. The question I want to understand is how to create a generic interface to create the appropriate factory. Here is the table of the possible data source combinations (3 types * 3 sources = 9 possible). So more types and more sources can make creating the right Data_Source an ugly experience for maintaining the code. Right now I get the right compilor error for Data_Source_Factory_Creator::get_Factory() because given Data_Source_Factory is a template class I need to instantiate this template correctly. I don't know how to make this function return a generic type so that I can do: Data_Source_Factory<File_Data_Source>* m_factory = Data_Source_Factory_Creator::get_Factory(); Any ideas? Signals - last call

Hello everyone, I have a question concerning signals. I wanted to force one of the callbacks to be called last. Obviously this needs to be done in an agnostic way since the calling function will probably not know how many other callbacks are connected and so on. Building boost as part of larger project which also uses jam

I've built and installed boost on a WinXp system with VS.Net 2003. I'm trying to use it in a static CRT project. I get the following error whenever I compile: > error C1189: #error : "Mixing a dll boost library with > a static runtime is a really bad idea..." I noticed that this is happening because BOOST_DYN_LINK is #defined in config.hpp. Apparently dynamic linking is the default for Boost? Anyway, I've commented out this #define, but now I get a ton of warnings like the following > warning C4275: non dll-interface class 'std::logic_error' > used as base for dll-interface class 'boost::lock_error' and the project won't link > error LNK1104: cannot open file 'libboost_thread-vc71-mt-s-1_31.lib' I looked in Boost's lib folder and there aren't any static thread binaries (eg, "libboost_thread_xxx.lib). There are only the dynamic libraries (boost_thread_xxx.lib). Apparently something failed in the build process. I have to admit I didn't sit and watch the build process for the half-hour it took to build, so something may have gone wrong. Is there a build log somewhere? Hi, Just want to know *exactly* how to use boost::signals in a Qt project. I read this : http://www.boost.org/doc/html/ch06s04.html but I don't understand how to do it. I try to recompile boost with : "-sBUILD=<define>BOOST_SIGNALS_NAMESPACE=signalslib". After that, I try to directly change BOOST_SIGNALS_NAMESPACE in signals_common.hpp but didn't work neither. newbie: bjam with mwcw, #include "user" and <system> paths

Hi, I am a newbie and have a few questions. 1. Re: bjam suspicious output with Metrowerks CodeWarrior 9.2 My command line tools times goes back to mpw on the Mac pre 1990... The boost documentation looks very good but it still assumes a knowledge of command line tools. I have managed to build 2 Win targets: One that I hope I will be able to drop into a large ms vc7.2 solution and an other for a mw cw 9.2 workspace. (I sure wish boost deployed ready made .vcproj and .mcp files...) I have extracted the boost source to: C:\boost_1_31_0 I have also downloaded bjam.exe (3.1.10-1-ntc86) and copied it to the boost_1_31_0 root. So, I launched a cmd window: cd C:\boost_1_31_0 bjam "-sVC71_ROOT=C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003\Vc7" install. This generates: C:\Boost\ - include\ - lib\ include\ is basically a copy of the source without a few make specific files but with all the platform specific source intact. I assume this is a "basic installation" for use with ms vc7. I have managed to use it making a few tests with boost::shared_ptr. So far so good. I proceeded to make the mwcw target after renaming C:\Boost\ to C:Boost_vc7\. bjam "-sCWPRO8_ROOT=C:\Program Files\Metrowerks\CodeWarrior" install This process is much much faster and the new files I get in C:\Boost\include and C:Boost\lib are exactly the same as those generated a while ago by the vc7 compiler (the libs have exactly the same timestamp). In fact it doesn't look as if anything is ever compiled. This is making me suspicious. However I have managed to make a similar test with boost::shared_ptr. Off course, none of the generated libraries are involved so I am probably just kidding myself. 2. The boost source is mixing "user" and <system> paths. For instance in boost\any.hpp: #include "boost/config.hpp" #include <boost/throw_exception.hpp> Is this intentional? If so, why? It is forcing me to add the boost root to both the UserPaths and System Paths settings. This is very unfortunate. I can"clean this up" but that's going to cause work when upgrading. 3. Does anyone here have experience adding boost to a large vc7.1 solution in such a way as to cause zero noise. In other words, next time your collegues synchronize, everything should be automagic - no need to have any one change local settings or read long and boring installation e-mails which is bound to fail anyway. Mirroring the boost hiearchy in a CodeWarrior project is child's play. In msvc it's more like a nightmare because one has to create the sub directories manually, one at a time :-). I can deal with the #include paths issues by adding ".." to projects Additional Include Directories". Msvc does not seem to care whether it's a "user" or <system> path. I'd be interested to know how people deal deal with this in general. regards, Conrad Weyns

On SuSE Linux 9.1 using both my own build of boost 1.31, and SuSE provided rpms, as well as both my own build of gcc 3.3.3 and the one from SuSE, I was not able to build this file found in the boost source tree boost_1_31_0/libs/test/example/exec_mon_example.cpp It can also be found here: http://www.boost.org/libs/test/example/exec_mon_example.cpp This is what happens: $ g++ -o exec exec_mon_example.cpp /tmp/ccGtnzc0.o(.text+0x107): In function `main': : undefined reference to `boost::execution_monitor::execute(bool, int)' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status I've also tried variation of the following: g++ -o exec exec_mon_example.cpp -L /org/boost/lib -l \ boost_test_exec_monitor-gcc /opt/org/boost/lib/libboost_test_exec_monitor-gcc.so: undefined reference to `test_main(int, char**)' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status Does this compile for other Linux users? boost::bind questions

Heya Boosters, I ran into a problem using boost::bind yesterday and, although I found a workaround, I've got a few questions. For the record I'm using boost 1.30. I stumbled onto the issue that boost::bind doesn't define the argument_type typedef (I was trying to use std::not1). After trawling the web I found a discussion, and useful workaround, about this here: http://tinyurl.com/5bl9m Questions that arose from this: o Why doesn't boost::bind support argument_type? o What other standard library function adapters does this affect? - Is it all that are derived from unary_function? o Has the operator! addition been incorporated into later versions of boost? - If not, why not?
