For example, there are bugs in: 1. incremental_components functions 2. subgraph functions Does anybody have problems with boost graph library? Where to find listed bugs found in boost graph library? And while not strictly required, I tried to follow the recommendation that you create wrappers for all the functions, so that you can sub-class the C++ object in python. So I already have a class of: class mine_w : public mine { public: PyObject *self; mine_w(PyObject *_self) : self(_self) {} virtual bool func1(int a) { return call_method<bool>("func1", a); } } So right now, by definition looks like: class_<mine, mine_w, boost::noncopyable>("mine", no_init); If I changing mine_w to shared_ptr<mine> allows it to work. But trying to do: class_<mine, boost::shared_ptr<mine_w>, bases<parent> , boost::noncopyable>("mine", no_init); Again complains about no to-python converter for the given type. And trying to supply both, with: class_<mine, boost::shared_ptr<mine>, mine_w, bases<parent> , boost::noncopyable>("mine", no_init); Complains that I have too many template arguments. Also, what about the (hypothetical) situation where I might return shared_ptr<mine> from one function, but auto_ptr<mine> from another? Also, another "bug". If I create a pure-virtual class, then I should set the no_init field. However, if I try to sub-class this object in Python, the C++ constructor cannot be called, and so I can't pass this object to C++ functions. I'm trying to create some opaque interface classes (callbacks, etc). Without a wrapping class, it won't compile without no_init, since it tries to compile a function that would generate one. With a wrapping class I don't need no_init, and if I put it, then I can't properly subclass my object. Are these just known problems, and people live with it, or has it just not really come up? shared_ptr<> w/ Boost::Python

I realize this may not be the right list, but since I'm already subscribed... I've been using boost::python to wrap some C++ code for quite a while now, and I've been quite happy with it. However, I decided to get into boost more, and I've found that shared_ptr/shared_array are quite nice. So I've started changing my functions from returning a raw pointer to returning a shared_ptr. In the boost::python tutorial, they talk about when you return a raw reference or pointer, you need to wrap it to manage lifetime of the object. http://www.boost.org/libs/python/doc/tutorial/doc/call_policies.html In the beginning of that page, they talk about how smart pointers are better for defining the scope and lifetime of objects, but sometimes raw pointers are necessary. I've gotten pretty good about when to manage_new_object, or return_internal_reference, etc. However, now that I have changed my return functions to actually return a smart pointer, it doesn't seem like I should need to wrap the return value anymore. Only now, when I try to do a "get" it gives me the error: " No to_python (by-value) converter found for C++ type: class boost::shared_ptr<class mine> " I have a converter for "class mine". I actually thought that the lifetime managers were using a shared_ptr, so if I did it myself, it would just be transparent. Does anyone know what the proper way to export a shared_ptr into python is? I suppose I could define the shared_ptr<class mine>, and only expose the "get()" function. But that would certainly be less than optimal. (I also obviously cannot wrap my function in another function that returns get(), because that would cause the shared_ptr to have the wrong lifetime.) Thanks for any help, John =:->

While you "can" do this, you are asking for more pain than anyone should be forced to have. (it is not very compliant and has lots of template quirks. AND you get pages (and pages and pages and pages) of template warnings on valid code (making debugging compile time issues much more difficult) My *strong* suggestion to you is you install at least Visual Studio .net 2003 which comes with the vc++ 7.1 compiler. If you cannot purchase this product, the command line compiler is available for free download from: http://msdn.microsoft.com/visualc/vctoolkit2003/ Hope this helps (been there, done that, got the tee-shirt :) )

uBLAS bindings

Hello, I would like to post this to uBLAS-users, but I am not yet a member. If anyone knows how to fix this, I would appreciate your help. I am working on adding identity matrices (and perhaps some others) to the gesv method of the LAPACK bindings. I have a couple questions about the code. In the template <typename MatrA, typename MatrB, typename IVec> inline int gesv (MatrA& a, IVec& ipiv, MatrB& b) method the static asserts are checking for the matrix types allowed within the gesv type? Instead of using gesv to invert a very large matrix (which would require us to create a very large identity matrix), would it be advisable to simply triangularize matrix A (maybe using LU) and use the uBLAS solver and an identity_matrix? Also, any overview of how the bindings and traits work would be very helpful! Thank you, Dan Elliott

Hi, i am a rookie as far as boost is concerned and i am trying to make boost work but just cant...on the point of giving up on it...so please help asap.... i am trying to use a scripting language called lua with my c++ source code. FOr that I felt the need to use luabind library which is completely dependent on boost.(project specific reasons for selecting luabind) As a result i need to have boost on my system. Greets Boost users - I've just begun to play with boost for usage in a making my own GUI for my PDA (SimPAD), using AGG to render the widgets and Boost for the toolkit-type libraries (in place of the nice-but-GPLed Qt from trolltech). My question for you guys is this: 1) Is it possible to specify an abritray cross compiler for boost? - my build machine: Mandrake Linux 10.0 - cross compiler: gcc version 2.95.2 19991024 (release) - installed in /opt/Embedix/tools/bin/arm-linux-* 2) Is there already a predefined cross-compiler "target" for jam? Or maybe somebody understands what i need to do to get it crosscompiled, and can answer the question even if im not *asking* the right questions. :-) Any help is welcome.. Doesn't freshmeat/sourceforge give you that automatically somehow? I remember seeing some sort of league table of the most 'active' projects on one of the two sites, taking that figure is something that could be automated, and so wouldn't go out of date, it might be a good start? If the code isn't on freshmeat/sourceforge maybe the same thing could be setup on the server where boost source is stored? Thinking about it, you could probably list the number of hackers on each project too, that would be a useful statistic. And what about bugs? Maybe the number of bugs in the bugzilla database (if there is one) could be shown too, that would go some way to indicating stability. And if there is an issuezilla (like openoffice.org has) then that might say something about completeness? The severity rating of each bug would be useful too ... Using all this stuff in a clever way, you could really come up with a groovy stats page for each project perhaps. Hope these ideas are helpful! About property maps and the Boost Graph module

Hi folks, I've searched the archives and boost.org trying to find some help, but I still can't get my head around how the property maps are supposed to work. I'm pretty new to Boost, so I'm maybe not too familiar with the underlying concepts, etc, so forgive me if my question seems a little too basic! My problem is this: Given a directed graph with a single start and end point, I want for each node (vertex) to build a list of all the other nodes that can be reached from the current node. The algorithm is simple, I think: do a depth_first_search() and implement my code on dfs_visitor::finish_vector(). This skeleton I have done. However, the bit I can't get my head around is how to use property maps to collect the info. shared_ptr and shared_from_this

I have an interpreter that uses a visitor pattern while performing a reduction of the program tree. As part of the visitor pattern, each class that can be a node in the tree must respond to: virtual void accept(Visitor& v); where each node then implements by calling visitor with itself using the proper type. The function calls in visitor are like: void visit(shared_ptr<Node> node); void visit(shared_ptr<Type> node); etc. (where Type is a descendant of node BTW). Normally with the visitor pattern (GOF style in this case), the implementation of accept is simply: void Node::accept(Visitor &v) { v.visit(this); } I've tried adding enable_shared_from_this<...> as a superclass of my nodes, and returning shared_from_this(), which works in some cases, but in others just seems to hang. These occur in classes that are a little more complex. For example, I have a TypeTemplate<T> class that wraps to underlying types TypeTemplate<int>, TypeTemplate<float>, TypeTemplate<etc>. I've tried adding enable_shared_from_this<TypeTemplate<T> >, and then having an implmentation void TypeTemplate<T>::accept(Visitor &v) { v.visit(enable_shared_from_this<TypeTemplate<T> >::shared_from_this()); } but it just hangs on both vc7.1 on windows and Xcode on OS X. (I had to add the extra scoping because I got complaints that "shared_from_this() was ambiguous in multiple inheritance.") I read in some past postings that the shared_from_this template doesn't work so well for complex class hierarchies, and I am wondering if I am running into that. I was thinking of putting my own internal_weak_ptr into the classes, but was confused by some of the examples I have seen. Most of them seem to reference a static function create() which instantiates the weak_ptr, and returns a shared_ptr<X>. When I consider my situation: shared_ptr<Node> aNode(new Node(...)); Visitor v; aNode->accept(v); How does the accept implementation return a shared_ptr that is linked with aNode? I've looked through the enable_shared_from_this implementation, and can't figure out how it is supposed to work. even if I return shared_from_this(), I'm not sure now that is linked to aNode. Hi, I'm looking for advice on ways to "nest" spirit grammars that use semantic actions. In the past, I have written a spirit grammar that parses 2-dimensional array data from a file, and puts the data into an array object of my choosing. To do this, the grammar defines a new functor (array_insert) and calls the functor whenever a new array element is parsed. The functor puts the element into a reference to the destination object, held within the grammar: struct array_grammar { array_grammar(MyMatrix & m) : _inserter(m) {} struct array_inserter { array_inserter(MyMatrix & m) : _m(m) {} // operator() defined here... MyMatrix & _m; } // ...the usual grammar components... array_inserter _inserter; }; This works, as expected. However, I now have to write a parser for a file containing a collection of 2D arrays, where each array is delimited by tags (say, "BEGIN" and "END"). I would like to push each array into a std::vector of MyMatrix objects. Is it possible to save the current state of the state machine to a stream or by means of boost::serialize? Details: I am building a state machine using boost::fsm that is trying to follow the activity of items in a processing pipeline. I am trying to implement a procedure that allows the software to be turned off and on again without loosing the information about the current state. Naturally, I want to have a timer and, at some interval I checkpoint the state machine and save the binary representation to a file. Hmm, could well be, I just downloaded a binary of bjam rather than building it, so I bet the default download is a windows build. I did get the install to work like this, however, my project doesn't find the boost includes, even though I installed to /usr/local, shouldn't they be picked up there? This might be very easy for a lot of you but I've been banging my head on the wall. I just installed the boost library and tried to run a simple test file using boost.thread.mutex #include <boost/thread/mutex.hpp> int main() { boost::mutex m; } I got this compilation error message: undefined reference to `boost::mutex::mutex[in-charge]()' I guess I have to link in the libboost_thread.dll file somehow but I don't seem to find a solution how. I'm having a problem wherein the block of code below hangs at line 16. A race condition is being created with the shared_ptrs. boost::serialization problems

Hello, I'm having some problems trying to use the boost::serialization library. Here's why: I have a class hierarchy (~80 classes). I was trying to add the serialization abilities to the entire hierarchy (intrusive template-based version). Because I need to serialize things through pointers to base classes, I do the register_type on each class. But the compilation fails on MSVC 7.1 with "internal structure overflow" and "out of keys" errors. So I googled a little bit and found out that this is a known issue with MSVC and that the workaround is to split the .cpp file into smaller parts. So I did. But now the linker fails due to excessive .lib file size (I had to put the register_type function for each class in separate .cpp file) Ok so I switched to the polymorphic archives. It compiles fine, but fails at runtime when saving a null pointer. Using template in property types

I have a need to store an instance of a template class in each vertex of a adjacency_list. I was wondering if my idea below will do: template <class House_Type, class Number_Type> class Home { public: uint32_t id; House_Type type; Number_Type digits; }; The following classes are specific instances of the Home class: class Ranch_Home : public Home <std::string, uint8_t> {} class Tudor_Home : public Home <std::string, float> {} I was thinking that the property to store this would have to be something allows for either Home type to be stored at a vertex. struct house_obj{}; typedef property < house_obj, boost::shared_ptr< Home< House_Type_Base, Digit_Type_Base> > > VertexProperty; In this case the House_Type_Base and Digit_Type_Base what I am not sure about here. Swap allocator problem in multi_array.hpp

When resizing a multi-dimensional array I receive the warning: d:\microsoft visual studio\vc98\include\xutility(100) : warning C4101: '_Tmp' : unreferenced local variable d:\boost\include\boost-1_31\boost\multi_array.hpp(246) : see reference to function template instantiation 'void __cdecl std::swap(class std::allocator<double> &,class std::allocator<double> &)' being compiled An unreference local variable is not exactly the end of the world, but it is churned out every time a file is compiled that include this function and I'd rather not disable this warning. I can find no mention of anyone else having this problem for such a widely used function (dynamically resizing arrays). The specific line that appears to be causing the problem is: swap(this->allocator_,new_array.allocator_); in "multi_array.hpp" I am resizing the array like so header file: typedef boost::multi_array<double, 2> array2d_type; typedef array2d_type::index index; Class CArrayConfiguration{ ... protected: ... array2d_type m_pReceiveArray; ... }; implementation file: m_pReceiveArray.resize(boost::extents[M][5]); // where M = 10 -> 1000 and it is this line that prompts the warning. dijkstra_shortest_paths and vertex_index

I understand that when using listS to define vertices for a graph, I must also assign values to vertex_index before attempting to make use of dijkstra_shortest_paths. My question is, do the values assigned to vertex_index need to be sequential (i.e. 0 to n where n is the number of vertices in the graph), or can I assign any "random" integer to each vertex_index, as long as the values assigned are unique for each node? Does dijkstra_shortest_paths simply use the vertex_index as a unique identifier for the vertex, or is it using those indices to build an internal data structure such as an array or vector ... in which case using relatively large (or non-sequential) integers for vertex_index might be prohibitive from a memory or performance viewpoint? Hello! I like the idea of containers (e.g. std::vector) of boost::any. But I'd like to execute some operation on each item of the sequence. Unfortenuately I would need to know the set of types in the container and check every one of them if I was going to use the std::for_each with a void(*)(boost::any&). That's not good at all. I'd like to pass a function object like: struct MyOperation { template<typename T> void operator() (T&) const; }; How can I do so? Is there any algorithm for doing so provided by boost? Frank

BOOST_STATIC_ASSERT with intel compiler at class scope

The BOOST_STATIC_ASSERT documentation indicates I can use it at template class scope (private recommended) - the assert shouldn't get triggered unless the class is instantiated. Hello all, I am trying to find some source code that uses spirit to parse C++ and convert it to HTML, i found some on google, but i misplaced it and i can't find it again. It looked like it could have been an example provided with the library, but i can't see it listed in the documentation. On a side note, anyone know the best way to use boost with cygwin? From source? Searching the net didn't provide much helpfull information. I wondered if any of you had tried anything with Boost and VC2005/Whidbey compilers. First, using the algorithms becomes cumbersome/annoying. Instead of being able to write std::list<boost::shared_ptr<int> > lst; // ... Populate the list int i; // ... Set the value of i std::list<boost::shared_ptr<int> >::iterator = std::find(lst.begin(), lst.end(), i); I instead need to create a function object to represent a boost::shared_ptr<int> having the desired value and then use find_if(). Second, I would lose the ability to store iterators and then check them later for validity. Suppose that I have a std::list<boost::shared_ptr<int> > named lst and I have two std::list<boost::shared_ptr<int> >::iterator objects it1 and it2 that happen to reference the same node in the list. If I call lst.erase(it1) then it2 also becomes invalid. If I call boost::weak_ptr<int>(*it2) I get an error because I cannot dereference the iterator because it is already invalid. This is how std::list objects are supposed to work but what I want to be able to do is now call something like it2.expired() to determine that the node being refered to by it2 is not invalid/expired/removed. One way to get around this is to store boost::weak_ptr objects derived from std::list<boost::shared_ptr>::iterator objects instead of storing it1 and it2 directly. But then I lose the advantage of having stored iterators: I cannot (after checking for expiration and being at the end of the list) call operator++() to move the iterator forward. Fundamentally, I don't want to be storing a "list of nodes of shared pointers of objects" but a "list of nodes of objects whose pointers to each other are shared pointers". And I want the iterators to be weak pointers to the nodes. Potentially a way to do this would be to write a custom allocator my_alloc that declares typedef boost::shared_ptr pointer; and then create a std::list<T, my_alloc<T> > This works because std::list uses the allocator rebinding mechanism to call my_alloc<node<T> > rather than my_alloc<T>. (In fact, my_alloc<T> is never used to allocate anything in std::list<T>!) However, there is a problem because the interface (concept a la Austern) of boost::shared_ptr is different than that of a regular pointer. So when the std::list code tries to call _Myhead = 0; I get a compiler error. (I am using MSVC 7.1: although this particular error may be STL implementation dependent, I do believe that the problem I am describing will occur with any STL implementation.) But I digress... The question of why the boost::shared_ptr interface/concept does not conform to that of a normal pointer is probably a topic for a separate posting.

There are very few safe uses for these operations, and programs that use them tend to suffer from data corruption and/or deadlocks. Extending the boost::thread class

Hi all, I want to use the boost thread library as a base for my multiplatform thread class. After I have studied the documentation I recognize that there are not all things available at the moment what I need, so I try to find out what is the best way to start my implementation. What I need, is to implement the following additional methods: suspend, resume, stop (or terminate), set_priority, get_priority, get_state and I want to have the possibility to create threads in a suspend mode. I want to use the boost thread as is and extend the needed features in my own class, but it seems so that their is at the moment no legal way to get the internal thread resource from a created thread, so that I can implement the missing and perhaps not portable features by my own? So what is the prefered way to extend the thread class? Is their a reasonable way to do it or should I build my own class from scratch? many thanks for any input and guess, regards Arno

Hi, I am new here. I recently downloaded the boost library from www.boost.org. I need to use the "subgraph" function in the library. I tried to run the example file "subgraph.cpp", but the running result was different from what was given in the file. Thread library Win32 static linking for MSVC 2003 release?

Does anybody know when will be the next release of Boost that has the threads library fixed such that it is possible to link statically in win32 platforms compiling with MSVC++ 2003? I have read that it will be fixed for the next release. Also, how stable is the current version of the library in the CVS repository? I was browsing through it and it seems to have been fixed. "Compiler threading support not turned on" error

I'm attempting to use Boost.threads on Mac OS X 10.3 and am getting the error "Compiler threading support is not turned on" when trying to compile. I'm using Xcode, which is Apple's IDE, so I'm not sure what to do when the error text helpfully suggests I set the correct command line option. As far as I know, there's nothing extra that you have to do to enable threading support in the compiler. I've written multi-threaded apps using pthreads and never had to deal with command line options. Any suggestions? Thanks, Glen Simmons

Hello, I have run into a situation where the following std::list-like container would be useful. - The container itself would act more or less identically to std::list; - The iterators on the container would act like boost::weak_ptr in that they would know that they are invalid when the list element that they point to is removed. Does anyone know of such a container in any of the boost libraries, in another library or a way to accomplish the task using other means (such as iterator adaptors)? I looked at the newly proposed "smart containers" library, but it seems to be solving a different problem despite the similarity with the name I am using to describe what I want. two boost.threads taking much longer than one

Hi everyone, I've got an operation which takes 14 seconds on a single thread, but is taking up to 45 seconds when running via two boost.threads on a dual proc machine (2x 3ghz Xeons, Fedora Core 1). The thread functor objects are being passed a lot of references (about 20) to some very large std::vectors. One thread always reads/writes from the start of the vectors to their midpoint, and the second thread from (midpoint+1) to the end of the vectors. The only thing I can think of is that the threads are taking a long time to fork and get running, perhaps moving a lot of stack data around or something? When I look at the output of 'top' with threads displayed, I see the two threads appear, but they only use about 50-60% CPU utilization each. The system monitor shows mostly red (Kernel) as opposed to blue (User). Any ideas? -- Andrew Chapman Senior Technical Director - Framestore CFC

Problems in compilation with Boost

Hi, I am evaluating Boost for use in our project. The platform OS is FreeBSD 4.9; which comes with gcc-2.95.3. I downloaded boost_1.30.0 and compiled the thread library on the FreeBSD box. When I try to compile a small test program using Boost threads; I encounter hundreds of compiler errors; mostly in the Boost header files. Is there a workaround to this ? Which version of Boost works with gcc-2.95.3 and what are the compiler options that will make it compile properly? regards, Debayan.

Function type transformation and manipulation traits?

Are there any Boost support for manipulating function types? Operations I have in mind include: setting return type, setting argument type, changing number of arguments, et cetera. Thanks for the swift reply! In the interim I commented out the 2-3 problematic methods (which I am not using anyway) in the filesystem lib, but I like your solution better. A question on that though: On your solution, what exactly am I commenting out, that is, can the workaround break some other boost library or a significant assumption? Help ... BOOST::thread 's certain constuctor methods fails with STLPort

Hi I have build boost libraries for a) regular gcc b) gcc-STLPort the following code works perfectly for "gcc" and throws up the following errors for "gcc-STLPort". // this is my function object that // takes in input parameters as part of its constructor. func_obj instance(data,m_regMap); boost::shared_ptr<thread> pThread(new boost::thread(instance)); ERROR: mystuff.cpp:101: undefined reference to `boost::thread::thread[in-charge] (boost::function0<void, _STL::allocator<boost::funct ion_base> > const&)' If I assume that the boost runtime library has not been linked, that is not the case.(ldd tells me that i have) whereever I use 'xtime','lock' or 'condition' it doesn't complain. WHAT IS STRANGE IS THE FOLLOWING COMPILES boost::thread thrd; boost::thread thrd(func_obj); // it is the actual fo not an instance. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This happens on Linux/with STLPort 4.6.2/gcc 3.2.3

Hi, I am trying to use BOOST thread and regex libraries on Linux. I am able to compile them with sTOOLSS=gcc-stlport option. i just started looking at the boost libraries and thus i'm a total beginner. i'm trying to build the graph library in particular, and i haven't had any luck at all. first, is it a buildable library, or is it just a collection of templates? if so (collection of templates), how do i use it? i'm using windows xp, and building for Visual Studio 6 thanks!

I see two possible solutions: 1) Add const to the declaration 2) mention the non constness and show how to call the function object using var(func), with a short note on why that is needed.

shared_ptr interactions

I have created a simple template to make instantiation of shared_ptrs a little prettier. Here is an abridged version of the template: template <class T> class ManagedPointer : public boost::enable_shared_from_this<T> { public: typedef boost::shared_ptr<T> shared_ptr; public: static shared_ptr create () { return (shared_ptr (new T ())); } template <class A1> static shared_ptr create (A1 a1) { return (shared_ptr (new T (a1))); } }; This allows for me to create a class: class TestClass : public ManagedPointer<TestClass> { public: TestClass(); }; and create an instance by: TestClass::shared_ptr test = TestClass::create(); I have noticed in certain cases I get very strange behaviour. Most recently I've seen things hanging in the shared_ptr destructor. Changing the code to: TestClass::shared_ptr test (new TestClass()); does "solve" the problem. Is there something subtle in how the templates and subclassing are interacting that I am not understanding? thanks. e.

Dear all, Browsing through source files of boost, I see that some libraries reimplement common idioms found in other libraries. For example the tuple library reimplements its own compile time if and it's own typelist. I guess it would be better if high level boost libraries(e.g. regex, threads, to some extend also the tuples) would use the low level boost libraries (e.g. preprocessor, type_traits, mpl). Besides bugfixes and platform/compiler workarounds, it has also a documentary advantage. If you are familiar with mpl for example, one knows how to interpret the construct with if_. Also one can better interact with libraries if they are using the same base constructs. There almost no disadvantages, because all the low level boost libraries are template based. But probably this is a matter of time, because at first look at the variant library, I see that it uses the mpl. And people are talking about the fusion library for the tuples. Are there boost developers who can comment on this? Wkr, me.

What is the status of typelist support in boost? I read through a backlog of email in the archives but the last ones are from ~2002. Grepping through the source of 1.31.0 for (typelist | type_list) reveals some in the detail namespace for python, but that's all. boost install with gentoo issue?

Well, more likely my mistake, ive been up awhile.. I installed the boost libs onto my gentoo machine with emerge. I then added -lboost_regex to my linker flags..thats it. When I run my app, it hangs, I think when waiting on pulling data of off a UDP socket. Though I cant tell, I'm about to crash and its been one of those days. But I do know everything is back to normal when I take -lboost_regex out of the flags again. I know I'm awfully vague due to lazy/tiredness, but does this ring a bell with anyone? I've installed boost the traditional way (bjam) on other linux distros before without any issue, but ive never tried emerge before. I dont know if this has something to do with it, or i am somehow missing something really obvious.. Thanks for bearing with me, Dave

Hmm, Atlas requires cygwin as minimum on WinXP. The install won't work with msys from mingw. uBLAS problem under Borland C++builder

Hi Boost people I'm starting with uBLAS matrix class under Borland C++ builder. I copied a sample from boost document and complied it. There are always mistakes in "traits.hpp". I tried again in VC and no problem occured. I just wonder what's wrong with BC. I have copied the boost dir into BC's Include dir and have added it in Project->Options->Directories. Problem compiling Windows C++ code wit regex

Hi all, I try to compile some older C++ Code with your RegEx class and got in some source code problems with some ambiguity I believe between the std and the global namespace. I followed the include hierarchie starting from "boost/regex.h" down to "boost\config\stdlib\dinkumware.hpp" and here was my first problem, why this stdlib implementation was selected, I don't think, that this is the normal implementation for "VC++ 6.0 SP6" what I am using!? The errors I got are located in some windows system header and look like this only in one source file: : d:\programme\microsoft visual studio\vc98\include\objidl.h(9901) : error C2668: 'memset' : ambiguous call to overloaded function d:\programme\microsoft visual studio\vc98\include\objbase.h(435) : error C2668: 'memcmp' : ambiguous call to overloaded function d:\programme\microsoft visual studio\vc98\include\objbase.h(459) : error C2668: 'memcmp' : ambiguous call to overloaded function Error executing cl.exe. Any idea what kind of define can cause this problem? I visit every included headerfile and look also in the expanded preprocessor code (*.i file) and didn't see exactly what happend, so have somebody an idea? Thanks for your help Arno

I used boost via the fedora rpms, and that was okay, maybe that will help you narrow down the problem (ie maybe it's a gentoo thing rather than a packaged boost thing). I dont know if this has something to do with it, or i am somehow missing something really obvious.. C++ Parsing - oops

Hello John, Joel, I didn't mean to knock your work with that last email John, it might have come across badly, it was meant more as a compliment to spirit and a reference to the fact that it 'appears' to fit the bill for what I want to do better, not to bash regex, I like regex too. For the record it needn't be 'perfect' indexing of the C++ code, I don't mind if I get two hits for the same classname for example. I used regex for a tool to index the C++ and C files themselves, so I could quickly search for file names using regular expressions, it works great! So thank you both, no offence caused I hope. So you have to choose the way that best meets your expectations, and live with the defects either which way ;-) To solve your problem BTW, why not scan through the file for line starts (keeping count obviously!), and at each line start see if it's also the start of the regex you are interested in (one that matches a class definition for example), if you do this don't forget to either: prefix your expression with \A or Pass the match_continuous flag to regex_search, Either will anchor the search at the start of the line you are checking, and prevent the whole text being searched. Wow, I just read through the 1st few pages of the spirit docs, and I can safely say, that is as close to naked women as C++ code will ever be, its such a sexy idea. One library, and you can parse any sort of config file, code or anything! Amazing. Well, any lingering desire to use regex for my pet project has now left the building, I can't wait to have a play with spirit. When will it be a part of boost? Is it worth installing it seperately (I'd hate to do that and have a new boost appear the day after). Also, reading this made up my mind that I should get a nice magazine about STL and C++ matters, can anyone recommend one (UK based preferable, but all sugestions welcome). How to inherit from boost::multi_array

Dear List, I am using boost 1.31.0 on Linux (with gcc 3.3.2) I would like to create a 2D array class, which inherits from boost::multi_array<double, 2> class. However I have problems with the copy constructor of my class Array. [serialization1.32/vc7.1]: What's wrong with this class??

Hi I got a access violation on 0x00000000 with the class DDD but I cannot figure out what's wrong When the symbol NO_EXCEPTION is defined, the member acccode is set to an instance of ACCCODE and the serialization is working fine. But when this symbol is undefined, one gets the exception. I am suspecting the input serialization to bypass the loading of the member FIELD* field (which is following the "acccode" member) which leads to an exception when the next member DISP* disp is loaded but I have no way to check it out any idea?? Boost 1.30 with g++ 3.4

I have an existing body of code using some parts of Boost 1.30 (Bind, Function, Regex, Thread, and some utilities) and compiled using VC++ 7.1 on Windows. I now need to build with g++ 3.3 or 3.4 on Linux as well, and for various reasons I would prefer to use 3.4. Boost 1.30 predates g++ 3.4 by some way and I know that it won't all work without changes. However, neither will 1.31, and 1.32 has still not been released. I would rather not upgrade to either of these in case they break the existing Windows build. Are there any known bugs or other problems in the above-mentioned libraries from Boost 1.30 when used with g++ 3.4, and if so, any known fixes for them? (Assume I'm using Boost 1.30.2 - I might still have 1.30.0 but upgrading to 1.30.2 should be low-risk.) Ben.

I'm more than a little confused about how I should use the boost libraries. Part of this comes from the fact that it is not clear to me exactly where the demarkation is between using the build system to build boost, and using it to build my own programs. Some of my confusion comes from the appearant change in configuration requirements described in the documentation. It is suggested I don't need the environment variable used with earlier releases. One of these variables is $BOOST_ROOT, which the documentation used as an example of how to build boost. That example was exactly what I successfully (I believe) build the libraries with. I'm using SuSE Linux 9.1 on a P4 box. Some basic questions are these: When I downloaded and built boost, I first fetched the source for bjam. This is the name of the file I downloaded: boost-jam-3.1.10.tgz It compiled quite nicely, and I copied the resulting bjam jam mkjambase and yyacc to a location in my path. Are there anything other things such as configuration files I need to reside with the binary executables? Are there necessary configuration file that I need to have visible to these programs, even if they are not colocated? I then build boost with the command: bjam --prefix=$BOOST_ROOT "-sTOOLS=gcc" install after setting my BOOST_ROOT the way I wanted it. That resulted in two directories being placed in $BOOST_ROOT/ one is called $BOOST_ROOT/include/ the other is called $BOOST_ROOT/lib/. Under $BOOST_ROOT/include/ I have <path>/boost-1_31/boost/ which contains dozens of header files. I added $BOOST_ROOT/include/boost-1_31 to my $INCLUDE_PATH, and $BOOST_ROOT/lib to my $LIBRARY_PATH and $LD_LIBRARY_PATH variables. Is this the correct way to configure my system to use boost? Is there anything else I need to do in order to compile my programs against the boost headers and libraries? Will the boost libraries work as well as other, comperable libraries using autotools rather than bjam? Are there any special accommodations I need to make in order to use boost with the gnu build tools? Do I need to do anything special to use boost with bjam that does not involve placing files in my current project directories? For example, do I need to provide a global configuration file of some kind? Is it a preferred option, even if not strictly required? There is much remaining in the source directory where I compiled boost. Is that something I need to also put in an accessible place on my system? If so, what so I need to put where, and how to I modify my environment variable to facilitate its use? -- Regards, Steven

BOOST_CHECK_CLOSE apparent misbehavior

I get the following error Specification_test.cc(22): error in "specsimple": difference between spec(i, j){0.206788} and results[k]{0.206788} exceeds 1e-05% The numbers agree to all printed digits. I get a maximum relative error (assuming the printed values are rounded from extremes)*(see footnote) of .000001/.206787 = 4.8e-6 < 1e-5. Even doubling this is under the tolerance. As I read the documentation, this should pass. 1e-6 tolerance produces a lot more discrepancies; 1e-4 says they are all OK. Have I misunderstood something, or is something funny going on? In particular, the "%" after "1e-5" in the error message suggests the tolerances are supposed to be in percentage terms, i.e, 1e-5 implies a real tolerance of 1e-7. That would explain things, but I see nothing in the documentation to suggest the tolerance value is a percent. (Well, the docs do say the tolerance can be an integer.) The relevant line is BOOST_CHECK_CLOSE(spec(i, j), results[k], tol); All relevant quantities are doubles. It may be relevant that the program under test includes <cmath>. Debian package libboost-dev 1.31.0-7 on an Athlon system. # g++ --version g++.real (GCC) 3.3.4 (Debian 1:3.3.4-6sarge1) Linux kernel 2.4.26 * In fact, the results value is coded as 0.2067880 in the program, so my calculation likely gives double the possible discrepancy.
