operators.hpp question.

Hello, I am trying to use the operators.hpp templates to create the following behaviour. I have a templated class like this. template <class T> class example {} now I want to do something like this: example<SomeType> r; example<SomeType> a; example<AnotherType> b; r = a * b To write the multiplication manually I would have to write a function template template <class T, class OtherT> example<T> operator*(const example<T>& op1, const example<OtherT>& op2); So, now my question is: How can this be done with operators.hpp? Obviously ... template <class T> class example : boost::multiplicative2<example<T>, example<OtherT> > { template <OtherT> example<T>& operator*=(const example<OtherT>& op); template <OtherT> example<T>& operator/=(const example<OtherT>& op); } ... won't work, since "OtherT" isn't defined at its first occurrence. [iterator] iterator_facade operator-> pointee always const

Hi, While using boost::iterator_facade wirh a class type as argument for both the 'Reference' and the 'Value' template type parameter I noticed that I can't access non-const members via operator->. *i is not const and neither 'Value' nor 'Reference' are. A naiv look at the source shows me that operator_arrow_proxy::operator->() always returns 'T const *'. Is this a bug or an intentional restriction ? I'm using the current CVS version (just updated, head revision) and tried to compile with GCC and MSVC. Thanks for any help in advance, Tobias

hello , Robert Ramey In the last lettler , I forgot to tell you the error info of compiler. The msvc71 said that "wchar_t const * " can't be converted to type "std::wstring::const_iterator" , at the file "xml_escape.hpp" line 47. in stlport 4.6.2 , "std::wstring::const_iterator" is "const wchar_t * "(so I was mazed by the error info! ),but in ms-stl(vc71) , "std::wstring::const_iterator" is a nested class in basic_string<>.I don't konw what does stl_port4.53 implemented wstring. Another thing is : when i copy the file "xml_woarchive.cpp" to a simple msvc porject and compile it alone , there is no any error occured , regardless whether stlport is used. I think this is because some macro are difference between jam and ide enviroment , but I'm not sure. Boost::Serialization Compile error and my temporary solution,

Dear Robert Ramey, I'm SO sorry to bother you again! When I compile Boost::Serialization(version 1.32.0) using msvc71+stlport4.6.2, I fond compile error in the file "xml_escape.hpp" line 47. I followed the way compile shown , and find the cause is in file "xml_woarchive_impl.ipp" line 108 . Still having trouble with Mingw and install.

I just did bjam -sTOOLS=MINGW --install >From what I read that is supposed to put the libraries in c:\boost\lib and include in c:\boost\include.. It didn't. Now I think I did that the way the last reply said to so it should ahve worked any ideas? Kenx

boost::serialize on Codewarrior 8.3 (Mac)

program_options custom type problem

Hi, I am trying to use a custom type with the program_options library, but I get the "invalid option value" error when running my application, although inline parameters are correctly read. Here is what I do : I define a class ApplicationLocator consisting of two integer members, "site" and "application" and the corresponding >> and << operator towards and from stringstream. multi_index : performance issue

Hi, I've got a performance problem during a test I've done with multi_index on MSVC 6.0 SP 6. I'm using BOOST 1.32.0 . The search performance is comparable with several maps, but insertion is dramatically slow : 5mn 30s for 10 000 employees. Building with Mingw under XP

I am not sure if this has been asked before I tryed searching the archives but there was no search function and a whole bunch of topics. My problem is I am using Mingw under windows xp Pro. I am trying to get the libraries to compile and install in c:\boost which from what I have read is the default directory. when I do bjam --install -sTOOLS=mingw It seems to compile the libraries of corse I think 88 of them fail but it doesn't move the libraries over. What am I doing wrong? Oh one more thing it complains that I don't have python installed at the beginning do I have to have that library because I don't use it in the source I am porting from Linux I just need the boost libraries to get the software ported. In addition to the ability to define a long and short (one character) name for an option, is there a way to provide an "in-between" name? This way an alias, acronym, or mnemonic version could be provided. Serialization Lib doesn't have any single header file that can include for all. you must include every class header file separately. And what's the archive ? What is it's role ? Does it is an other liberary?(There is not any info in the downloaded Doc ). My Test code can't link successfully. The linker said there are some unresolved external symbol. It seems that some class was implemented in files in the archive. But this dir is not a "project",and the bjam do not compile it .it is simple copy file to the destination. Tuple access on Solaris

Hello, I was using the boost tuples library (from boost 1.31) to create a cache key. However, the Solaris compiler (SUNWspro v6.2.p1) complained when I tried to access the last element in the tuple. Efficient removal of std::list items

This seems like the type of thing boost may have an answer to, yet I still havn't found it: I have two std::lists, about 50,000 items in each. The items are all number ranges so two uints start and end. I need to remove one list from the other - exact matches or subranges only. Bug in BGL with num_vertices( filtered_graph )

Hello there! I think I found a bug in the BGL concerning the num_vertices function applied to filtered graphs. I use the filtered graph stuff with a vertice predicate. When I loop through the filtered graph with the vertex_iterator, I end up with a loop over all vertices where the predicate is true, just as it is supposed to be. But the function num_vertices on the filtered graph does return me the number of vertices of the original graph and not of the filtered graph. My system: boost 1.32.0, g++ 3.3.4, debian sarge. I know this is not the correct place to suggest new features to the STL, but I can't find a similar group for STL. Any suggestions? Sorry for the interruption. P.S. In case you're wondering what the suggestion is: Add ability to use random access operators with iterators. Return type of boost::bind(...)

Hi! Is there an easy way to use the exact type of what boost::bind(...) returns? The example above sheds some light of the source of this question. It would be much better (actually this is what bind is for, isn't it?) if I didn't have to define the plus_5 struct in order to be able to use transform_iterator. I wrote it in the comment what I'm thinking about. I could delve deeply into the bind header files and try to explicitly find what the exact class definition is, but I suspect it would not be too easy. Anyway, I may be forced to do that. [range]array of ints

I am changing a code base that previously was using the no longer supported array_traits. I use the begin() and end() functions in a lot of places with arrays of integers. I have converted everything to using boost::range::begin() and end(). However, there is a severe collision. begin() and more importantly end() are overloaded for wchar_t. Turns out on Mac OS X, wchar_t is the same as an int. This causes end() to look for a null terminator instead of just using the array length template function. Is there a way I can make range::end() work for real array's of int rather than wchar_t? Thanks for any tips, ...Duane

As Mr. Dawes pointed out, it would be nice to have that info in the docs somewhere. Overall though, I'm not sure that the allocations I'm seeing are acceptable for my application. Ideally, I'd like 1 allocation on connect and 0 allocations on signal send. We will be using an optimized small block allocator, but we still want to reduce memory operations as much as possible. Is there any suggestion to reduce this? I ran my own test putting in _CrtSetAllocHook(MyAllocHook), just copied from msdn. Below are the results (cleaned up a bit for just alloc hook calls). I haven't really looked at memory pools too closely. Hello, Attached you can find a modified version of your code snipplet that works. In fact you needn't specify <bool>, but you have to pass as many arguments as the function actually takes, three in this case. Even if you specify a default value for threshold, the compiler treats equ as a function taking three parameters. Disable Unused Argments

When using the range libraries size() function, I get an unused argument warning. While I could turn off these warnings explicitly for the project, I would rather not (in order to prevent other potential mistakes). Does boost have a more generalized or compiler specialized mechanism for disabling unused arguments in a function? To complicate matters more, this is a template function so the unused arguments pragma that I would use (with CodeWarrior 8.3) doesn't work. Suggestions welcomed. Thanks, ...Duane

We've been thinking about using certain boost functionality on a project. We were trying to keep the number of allocations down. An engineer did some testing on signals and their usage of memory and found that there was a surprising number of allocation related things were happening. Even sending a signal did allocation ops. If developers want to reduce allocation overhead, do they use memory pools or some other solution? Is there a pattern of large numbers of small allocations across the lib? For things like the boost's smart pointers also? Below is a description of the test. Thanks, -fm ------------ Memory Usage I ran a simple test to see how much memory is being used struct Hello { void operator (int year) { printf("Year = %d\n",year); } }; void Test () { Hello hello; boost::signal< void(int) > sig; sig.connect( hello ); sig( 1968 ); } Note: I used _CrtSetAllocHook to monitor the memory usage... Results: sizeof( sig ) = 24 bytes but the default constructor does a surprising amount of dynamic allocation (for an empty list) calls malloc or free 51 times allocates 277 bytes in 13 blocks (not including heap overhead) so the actual size is more like 24 + 277 + 13*8 = 405 byes a call to connect does 26 alloc-operations... resulting in 133 bytes in 8 blocks a call to send a signal does 78 alloc-operations... resulting in 0 bytes in 0 blocks ... My tests were debug builds... but I looked at the calls and the library just calls new a lot... there seems to be a pattern of having empty wrapper classes where the constructor dynamically allocates the actual implementation...

Tuple access on Solaris

I reasoned that since the other helper functions worked, it was a problem accessing the last element of the tuple. Hello, Failing to do it by myself, I ask for the group's help to fully understand why I can't use BGL's bundled properties with MS VC7. I traced the impediment to the fact that in the configuration header "visualc.hpp" the constant BOOST_NO_TEMPLATE_PARTIAL_SPECIALIZATION is #defined. This, further on (properties.hpp), causes the BOOST_GRAPH_NO_BUNDLED_PROPERTIES to be #defined. My question is, what is in this context understood by "template partial specialization" ? I ask, because I'm almost sure I've used this feature in VC7 before, hence my confusion. Many thanks in advance... Dan

How to make an iterator with a stride... and more

Hello, I have a situation which is probably quite common and already addressed by boost. So rather than write it my self, maybe someone can point me to the answer. I've got a geometry class that needs to expose iterators for the underling vertex components. Example: Class Vertex { positions_iterator PositionsBegin(); positions_iterator PositionsEnd(); normals_iterator NormalsBegin(); normals _iterator NormalsEnd(); ... } The first problem is depending on the format of the underling vertices, the stride between the data elements will change. Is there some easy way to implement this? I think writing my own using the boost::iterator_adapter is probably the way to go. Second problem is more involved. The texture data not only has a stride but a variable number of elements. Some vertices have 2 texture coordinates, some 3, some even more. Id love to define this iterator like this: stride_iterator< pair<float_iterator, float_iterator> > tex_coord_iterator; then create the iterator: stride_tupel_iterator< pair<float_iterator, float_iterator> >( pFirstTexCoord, texCoordStride, texCoordCount ); then use it: stride_tupel_iterator< pair<float_iterator, float_iterator> > it; for( it = vertex.PositionBegin() ; it != vertex.PositionEnd() ; ++it) { pair<float_iterator, float_iterator> coords; float_iterator iCoord; for(iCoord = coords.first ; iCoord != coords.last ; ++iCoord) { } } This will probably also require me to create my own highly special iterator class or is there a better way.

sorry if this has been asked before, it's very elementary but i can't find references in the archives or faq so here goes: i just installed boost libraries and built them via bjam. they seemed to build successfully. i'm using the vc7.1 compiler. when i try to compile (cl) a .cpp file containing the following include #include <boost/regex.hpp> i get the following: testBoost.cpp(8) : fatal error C1083: Cannot open include file: 'boost/regex.hpp': No such file or directory if i replace the include with the actual file spec like this: #include "C:\Boost\include\boost-1_32\boost\regex.hpp" i get the following compiler error: testboost.cpp C:\Boost\include\boost-1_32\boost\regex.hpp(28) : fatal error C1083: Cannot open include file: 'boost/regex/config.hpp': No such file or directory apparently the compiler (cl) isn't translating <boost>. since one boost header refers to others i need to fix this basic problem. i tried substituting the bjam.exe in place of cl to compile, then i get a different error: Unable to load Boost.Build: could not find "boost-build.jam" --------------------------------------------------------------- Attempted search from D:\c\whereis up to the root so i'm sorry to bother y'all with such a simple problem, all i need to know is how to compile (the 'hello world' scenario). thanks for your attention. -frank brown (stupid jerk) http://www.inwa.net/~frog

This isn't a question but rather a quick report for my future reference - I need to circle back and try to characterize this problem more fully when I'm not on deadline and can run some additional tests with Boost 1.32.0. Environment: - MS 7.1 compiler w/their STL distribution - Boost 1.31.0 (my client doesn't want to update to 1.32.0 until after this release) Summary: boost::variant registered as an internal edge property map member on a BGL graph causes the resultant graph to be inaccessible due to what appears to be incorrect initialization of both the internal vertex and edge property maps. I SUSPECT THAT THE ROOT CAUSE OF THIS CAN BE TRACKED BACK TO A MS 7.1 COMPILER BUG due to the fact that attempts to compile my test code results in either of (a) an C1001 Internal Compiler Error (b) a error-free compile and a completely screwed runtime. Details: The boost::variant in question is bounded by several unique specializations of a fully-specialized class. I am running into a problem compiling code that uses write_graphviz which used to work e.g. for gcc 3.3 and boost versions prior to 1.31. As I am trying to move forward I am testing different gcc and boost versions. static boost threads with dynamic runtime

I've upgraded to boost 1.32 on Win32 (using vc-7_1). Static linking to boost threads is back (yay!), but it doesn't seem to be completely there. For instance, there aren't any .lib files if I want to statically link to boost threads while using the dynamic runtime. In looking at the files generated by the install, there only seems to be dynamic-runtime/dynamic-threads dlls and static-runtime/static-threads libs. Other boost packages have dynamic-runtime/static-boost libs. Is this intentional (e.g., there are still problems with TSS)? Thanks, Aaron

[BGL] pathfinding

One of the core functions in my multi-state mazes app automagically creates graphs that are conceptually like the one in the attached program. In this case, the shortest path from vertex 0 to vertex 11 is also the only simple path from vertex 0 to vertex 11. Also, unlike a regular maze, there are no dead ends (only cycles), so no matter how far one deviates from this simple path, there is always a way back. To that end, I'm trying to write a function that gives users a path to the end vertex (11) from any other vertex in the maze graph. Unfortunately, this function currently works properly only when given the start vertex (0). I've tried both breadth-first and depth-first search. The cycles seem to be throwing them off in a manner I haven't figured out, yet. I'll keep investigating the problem, but if anyone else has dealt with something like this before, please let me know how I should proceed. Cromwell D. Hello, I want to build one variant of a one boost DLL library using the regular bjam scripts; I tried the following tools/build/jam_src/bin.ntx86/bjam \ -q \ -d2 \ -sTOOLS=msvc \ -sBUILD="debug <runtime-link>dynamic <threading>multi" \ boost_date_time which builds *both* the DLL and the static lib, but I want only the DLL. I'm guessing I'd have to replace "boost_date_time" with some mangled "fully-qualified" target name, what is it? Another question, is it possible to "stage" individual libraries? Thanks, D.

The Boost.Threads library provides boost::xtime and boost::xtime_get. I have some questions and concerns about these: I read the page at http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~mgk25/time/c/ in order to understand what the intended semantics of boost::TIME_UTC are. I assume that this matches the possible C proposal that is referred to in the Boost documentation. I also read the "Terminology" section of the Boost.Date_Time documentation. 1. First of all, should these (boost::xtime and boost::xtime_get) be treated as deprecated, in favor of the types and functions in Boost.Date_Time? (If so, then my further questions might be merely academic.) 2. It appears that the boost::xtime type is used both for the purpose of measuring the length of an interval of time, as well as for designating individual points in time. Is this correct? 3. thread::sleep (as well as other Boost.Thread functions) delays the execution of a thread for a specified interval, which implicitly begins at (approximately) the time of the call. Is its input parameter intended to be the other endpoint of the interval, or is it intended to measure the length of the interval? Both the documentation and the implementation lead me to believe that the former is the case. However, the documentation seems to me to be slightly ambiguous, and, of course, using a function's implementation to determine its expected behavior is questionable. (A similar question applies to the TimedLock concept, although I haven't looked at its details.) 4. The only type of clock that xtime_get supports (according to the documentation) is TIME_UTC. This does not seem useful to me, because I am mainly interested in providing accuracy for the intervals being timed, as opposed to providing accuracy relative to some externally-defined epoch. 5. Does boost::thread::sleep use the boost::TIME_UTC clock? If the parameter specifies the other endpoint, then I don't see how anything else could make sense. 6. What happens when someone applies a correction to the system time on my machine, in an attempt to synchronize it with UTC? Intuitively, I expect any functions that report UTC time to report a discontinuity, because the newer estimate should always be considered more accurate, but it was not known until the adjustment was made. Consider the code that I currently write in order to "sleep 5 seconds": boost::xtime xt; boost::xtime_get(&xt, boost::TIME_UTC); xt.sec += 5; boost::thread::sleep(xt); How long should the waited interval last? In most cases, it will be just under 5 seconds. If a leap second occurs within 5 seconds after the xtime_get, the wait ought to last about 6 seconds. (My guess is that most implementations would not provide this behavior, however.) And in the event that the TIME_UTC clock does not exactly match UTC time, and is subject to adjustments, the sleep could be instantaneous, or perhaps last a minute or more. (Here in my office, my workstation and the phone system disagree by 1 minute right now.) If boost::thread::sleep is intended to wait until a specified UTC time, (this is the conclusion that I have drawn from the documentation and the current implementation) then I think this is a conceptual flaw in the library. I have never had any need to do such a thing. It is always more important to me in this context that the duration of the interval be accurate, rather than its relation to, say, the rotation of the earth. Admittedly, I will get the behavior that I want in most cases. However, it seems senseless to me to confuse the matter of timing short intervals with reasonable accuracy by introducing UTC time, particularly when practically all computing hardware already has the facilities to perform the measurement task at hand, but does not necessarily have any means of discovering the current UTC time. My concerns could be mitigated if boost::TIME_UTC were renamed so that it did not have UTC in its name. It should then be documented as indicating a request for a (monotonic, if possible) clock that is suitable for timing intervals with a resolution around 1 second. The underlying implementations should then prefer system calls that enable accurate measurement of intervals, rather than synchronization with an external time base. Plus, the documentation for boost::thread::sleep should make explicit the manner in which it will interpret its argument. A search of the Boost developers' list on Gmane reveals a "problems with boost::thread" thread that appears to mention the issue of applying adjustments to the clock used for TIME_UTC. (And appears to have good suggestions for adding types to fix the ambiguity that causes questions #2 and #3.) I only found it after typing up the bulk of this message. However, it would be good to know if the future direction of the library is to incorporate the suggestions there. Weston

Hello everyone, I'm currently attempting to create a thread within a thread, and for some reason, the constructor seems to block and things just don't work very well. Consider a class ``BackupHandler'' and a class ``BackupHandlerThread'' - the thread is created for once in the 50ms polling to an output file which might be used by other processes. Now, in BackupHandler, I do this: --- boost::thread thread ( BackupHandlerThread (this->backupFile, this->data) ); --- Which, as far as I am aware of, should first create a BackupHandlerThread object, and then "launch" the thread with this object. Now, since I print out some debug info, it seems like it reaches the BackupHandlerThread constructor once, and the destructor twice. The function BackupHandlerThread::operator() () never is reached even once, and the execution of the initial thread blocks at the creation. Ease of use and learning ought to be a priority in the design of these objects, to the extent it is efficient and safe. To use iterators in lieu of keys or indices seems to me like a great simplification for users. Bug in Boost.Range + Boost.String Algorithms

I think I have found a bug mixing together this two libraries in Boost 1.32.0 Simply doing: #include <boost/algorithm/string.hpp> #include <boost/range.hpp> it's a bug because boost::algorithm::iterator_range<IteratorT> is redefined. I have attached a small demo program. ¿Am I wrong? ¿Is there a way to bypass this, apart from changing Boost code? Thanks in advance. result_of example?

I was trying to come up with a solution for the following problem: say, I want to declare this class template <typename T1, typename T2> class A { public: A( T1 x, T2 y ) : xy( x + y ) {} private: The_Right_Type xy; }; Or I want to declare a function template: template <typename T1, typename T2> The_Right_Type f( T1 x, T2 y ) { return x + y; } The problem is, of course, what is The_Right_Type? I could not get a solution better than something which would require me to "register" all types in some way (then I could get types of all expressions involving registered types). Then Scott Meyers suggested I look at boost::result_of. It looks very cool except I can't figure out how to use it :( I searched the Boost mailing lists, found some incomplete examples and some broken tinyurl links, but nothing which would show me how to use it. Looking at the proposal, I could see how it is used inside a template where I already have types, but not how to get a type out of an expression in the first place. Now the question: can result_of solve the problem above, and would someone be kind enough to show me an example of how to use it? boost::threads and dual processor Macs

We are having a problem that we have narrowed down to a problem with boost::threads on dual processor Macs. The very same software works fine, with boost::threads, on a single processor Mac. It also works fine with native Mac threads on a dual processor Mac. The crash is repeatable though, as threaded programs are wont to do, it crashes in slightly different places each time. The program does seem to crash during memory allocation. We have CodeWarrior 9 on its way to see if a compiler upgrade might address the problem, (there are some known problems with CodeWarrior 8 and threads, but only in debug builds. We see our crash in release builds as well). Our questions for the boost crew: -Are there any known issues with boost::threads and multi-processor machines? -Has boost::threads been tested on multi-processor machines? On multi-processor Macs? I have tried to compile boost using bjam but I get messages such as "The system cannot find the path specified." I have take care to define VC71_ROOT variable and included the appropriate \bin, \lib, \include directories. Thanks for the help. K

boost::threads: howto organize them ?

Hi Boost::Thread users (developers) During the past months I had to create a portable thread management shell around boost::threads to allow a simple thread management. The idea was to (implicitly) put each thread into a hierarchy (just like forked processes but with more features than boost::threadgroup offers). These threads now share a global structure to allow global access to their control interface (mainly a 'stop!' flag). Additionally I wanted to make threads requested to stop (triggered by themselves or from outside) implicitly stop their children and finally remove themselves from the thread management structures. It took me some time to make this approach a stable implementation (would have been much easier if boost::threads exposed their internal and platform-specific id). I think the idea of hierarchially organized threads is quite common and wonder how it could be *elegantly* designed using boost::threads. Any suggestions are welcome ! Martin.

Problems with compiling Boost 1.32.0 in RHEL 3.0 on Itanium2

First of all, Boost 1.32.0 can be compiled correctly in IA32 platform without any problems. But when I tried to compile it on Itanium2 system, I ran into the following problem: I issued the standard building command: bjam "-sTOOLS=gcc" install which supposes to compile both the debug and the release , both the static and the dynamic, both the single-threading and multi-threading versions, specified by the default value of the BUILD variable: "-sBUILD=debug release <runtime-link>static/dynamic <threading>single/multi" However an error always occurred when the compilation went to this place: gcc-C++-action bin/boost/libs/thread/build/libboost_thread.so/gcc/debug/shared-l inkable-true/threading-multi/barrier.o In file included from /home/xyg/downloads/boost_1_32_0/boost/thread/detail/confi g.hpp:18, from /home/xyg/downloads/boost_1_32_0/libs/thread/src/barrier.c pp:12: /home/xyg/downloads/boost_1_32_0/boost/config/requires_threads.hpp:47:5: #error "Compiler threading support is not turned on. Hello, While evaluating the serialization library, I've ran into a problem while modifying my code to add name value pairs to the serialized objects in order to be able to serialize them to an xml file. before doing this, everything worked fine, but now that I'm using NVPs, I get the following error: c:\projects\dev_tools\libs\c++\boost_1_32_0\boost\serialization\access.hpp(106): error C2039: 'serialize' : is not a member of 'std::map<_Kty,_Ty>' with [ _Kty=std::string, _Ty=std::string ] I'm using VC 7.1, and a stripped-down but compilable version of the code that causes the problem is included at the end of this mail. Dear Robert Ramey , Here is a new boost user ( but an 'old' c++ programmer ) writting to you. Now , with several painful night , my test code of serialization lib has't run. OK , as some letter in the list , I meet the link problem. The libs has been compiled and linked with bjam correctly,and the lib files have been copied to the right position.But the compiler complained there are some symbol not resolved. I have inspected the source code,and find the serialization use some file in the [[archive]] dir. And in the docs, there are no any info about archive. It seems that archive is not an independent lib(bjam not compile the archive files,but copy the header file to the destination dir). Some classes in the archive are used by Serialization, but the implementation of these classes are not processed by bjam,so these class excite link errors(not compile errors!). Another feedback about your code is that There are not any C1204 compile error in MSVC71 if you build in the release mode. It seems that in debug mode, the compiler add addition info to the result binary and madee the scope of compiling became to too large to the compiler. Here are some questions about the serialization: 1, Is the archive written by you ? 2, Is the archive an independent lib? 3, how can I solve the link problem? 4, It seems that there is not a single header file that can be included by user who want to use the serialization(and the user can forget all other header files ). Do you have any plan to add this feature ? Here are my suggestions: 1, Take the archive to be an independent lib. 2, Move the whole serialization code to the head file,so there is no need to compile the lib with the bjam,and this can bring more protablity.( Since the io stream interface of stl is standard, I think it is no need to compile code into platform specific libs ) note: I am a Chinese , and my english is poor . This causes the macro DISABLE_WIDE_CHAR_SUPPORT to be defined as well and thus the lexical_stream::operator(std::wstring) will not be compiled. Do anyone know a workaround, so that I can use lexical_cast without native wchar_t compiler support and wstring? Is it really necessary to define DISABLE_WIDE_CHAR_SUPPORT, if BOOST_NO_INTRINSIC_WCHAR_T is defined only? For testing purposes I have commented out the two #ifndef DISABLE_WIDE_CHAR_SUPPORT statement. Now, I could compile the example without native wchar_t support. During the compilation with the Microsoft Visual C++ 7.1 compiler I encounter an internal compiler error. In particular, - The library is now contained entirely in the iostreams subdirectories of <boost> and <libs>. - Resources are now called Devices - The i/o mode Inout has been renamed Bidirectional - The concept Buffered has been renamed Multi-Character - Filters are now located in the directory boost/iostreams/filter - Devices are now located in the directory boost/iostreams/device The library has been tested on VC7.1, Intel 7.1-8.0 for Windows, Codewarrior 8.3 and GCC 3.2 (mingw). Hi, I have a question that I believe is more a matter of taste than one of functional correctness... Say that I have a model (see Basket below) that formally owns the heap-objects (see Apple below). Basket has a function that is merely a query (hasApple) and involves no ownership-changes. Also assume that there is good reason that Apple:s are allocated on the heap... On one hand, I can see how using a weak_ptr as the parameter type would signal to users that hasApple has no intention of modifying ownership of the pointed-to object. On the other hand, in order to actually use the pointee (search for it in this case), hasApple must convert the weak_ptr to shared_ptr (lock() or shared_ptr constructor), so it would seem more pragmatic to just use shared_ptr as the parameter type. class Apple; class Basket { std::vector< boost::shared_ptr<Apple> > m_contents; bool hasApple( shared OR weak_ptr<Apple> a); // no transfer ...more functions }; Is there a "good style" concensus on how to choose smart pointer type for function arguments among boost smart pointer users? I'm trying to increase the number of bounded types stored in a boost::variant. It seems like I should be able to #define BOOST_MPL_LIMIT_LIST_SIZE in multiples of ten prior to inclusion of any boost headers but this doesn't seem to work for me. I haven't upgraded to the latest 1_32_0 release yet and am working with out-of-the-box 1_31_0 on Windows using the MS 7.1 compiler (VS .NET 2003). I get 17 link errors trying to compile a very simple example from the touturial section of the documention (what im trying to compile is listed at the end of this post verbatim). My enviorment is all default except for an include path to boost. boost-users: Here is a new user's letter for help: when i compile the whole boost(version_1_32_0), it show some error of data_time. the file greg_month.cpp failed. in the lexical_cast.hpp，line 126 string_type s(boost::lexical_cast<string_type>("not-a-date-time")); the compiler said : binary '>>' : no operator found which takes a right-hand operand of type_put<Config,charT,OutputIterator>::string_type' (or there is no acceptable conversion) When tracing down the error message, I found that [[date_names_put::string_type]] actually means [[std::basic_string<charT>]] and in file lexical_cast.hpp line 146 -- 168 there are right overload of operator>>. Why the compiler complain about can't find the wellformed operator? I tried moving <boost/regex.hpp> to be the first include statement, but got the same error. I tried the following compile statement: /usr/vacpp/bin/xlc++ -c -DNDEBUG -O3 -qstrict -qinline -qnotempinc -qfuncsect -qeh -qrtti regex.cpp -o regex -I /usr/local/include and again got the same error as before. Any other suggestions? What is the ETA of the fix you mentioned.

Hello, I'm trying to compile boost.iostream (approved but not yet included in the official distribution) with boost_1_32. First I had to replace the few occurences of apply_if with eval_if, due to a change in mpl. No probs here. Then I had to add #include<boost/io/operations.hpp> to simmetric_filter_adapter.hpp so that boost::io::{read,write,flush} can be found. But now I'm stuck with ..boost/io/operations.hpp: In static member function `static void boost::io::detail::read_impl<boost::io::input>::putback(T&, typename boost::io::char_type<T>::type)': ..boost/io/operations.hpp:107: error: incomplete type `boost::STATIC_ASSERTION_FAILURE< false>' used in nested name specifier and I do not know what the next move should be. Would anybody have a suggestion? I run with linux and g++ 3.4.1. Thanks, Giuseppe

Hi! Is there such a class in boost? What I'm thinking of is fairly simple, it could be written easily with type_traits and mpl::if_, but I prefer using the standard boost components, if they exist. select_parent<T1, T2>::type is a) T1 if T1 is T2's (direct or indirect) parent b) T2 if it is the other way round c) T1 if T1 and T2 are the same d) and generates some compiler error if T1 and T2 are not related at all. I have installed BGL on my linux machine and I was wondering, how do I compile the examples, I wanted to compile the dijkstra's example but couldn't find any make files and simply doing g++ dijkstra***.cpp doesn't do the trick. serialization library - Serializing classes from a DLL

Hello, I am trying to use the boost serialization library to serialize the classes from my application (I use Microsoft Visual C++ 7.1 compiler). The most of the classes are placed in a DLL, some are in my executable project. For this, I had to link (statically) the DLL and the executable with boost serialization library. I used the BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT macro for all the derived classes that I serialize through a base class pointer: in each header, after the class declaration, I added the BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT(class_name) line. The DLL and executable compilation time increased drastically, and both the DLL and the executable export tables contain all the entities (classes & functions) resulted from the BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT macro expansion (and because the BOOST_DLLEXPORT is defined as __declspec(dllexport) in force_include.hpp). This happens because I have to include the header files from the DLL source files, also from the executable project source files. My question is: where should I put the BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT declarations for the DLL classes? Note that I invoke the serialization/deserialization only from the executable (not from the DLL). I tried to group all the BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT declarations in a cpp file in the executable project. It went pretty good, but after inserting many declarations, I received the C1204 error (internal structure overflow). Are there "things to know" for using the serialization library from a DLL? Also, there are no test projects that cover this aspect. Thanks a lot, Florian Preknya

I don't know is this is a bug as such, but thought I should bring it up. I boiled down an un handled exception I was receiving in VC 7.1 and related it to the demo.cpp The demo does not close or flush the ofstream before it reads back from the same file it wrote to, this appears to work correctly for the demo, but in the attached very simple case it does not. I am assuming that it is because the ofstream did not get flushed and the file contains no data. Link problems with boost.serialization

Now I'm experiencing link problems in attempting to apply boost.serialization to my application. I can avoid them by commenting out the bodies of all my serialize methods. If I leave a simple serialize method intact, I can run the sucessfully linked application and produce an archive file.
