I'm trying to install boost1.32 using the prebuilt bjam for mac darwin, but it seems to hang on darwin-C++-action bin/boost/libs/serialization/build/libboost_serialization.a/darwin/ release/xml_grammar.o or perhaps this just takes hours, which seems unlikely. What am I doing wrong, and how do I fix it? Multithreaded Signal Library

Since it has been advise by many people in the past that retrofitting software is troublesome and expense. I am looking at the issues of redesigning the signals library from scratch to keep the same interface. Before providing a new solution to consider I have a few questions. Is the relationship of signals to slots 1 to N where N = 0 to some value? From what I have read I believe this is true. Since signals are not copyable? N processes desiring to signal the M slots (N = 0 to some value N, M = 0 to some value M) will have to do it through the same signal object if the processes are of the same type (class has an signal object as a variable). Right? The second question comes from my initial understanding of the signals library. I was thinking about this scenario: There is a class call Cart which has a signal boost::signal<void()> in_Parking_Lot in it. Since a store will have multiple Carts for customers to use the owner has programmed his carts to signal the front desk computer when they are moved out of the store. class Cart { private: boost::signal<void()> in_Parking_Lot; public: void init (FrontDesk& fd) { in_Store = true; in_Parking_Lot.connect(fd); void process () { for (;;) { Check location (If in store set in_Store = true vice versa if not). if ( ! in_Store ) { in_Parking_Lot(); } } }; So if I have a very small shop with 50 Carts, all 50 Carts be using the same signal object to alert the front desk. If I had a big computer with 51 cpus (50 Carts and 1 FrontDesk) to run each process I have a race condition. Which process gets to alert the front desk when? >From what I understand the relationship of signals to slots is (1:N) where N is 0 to some number. So I have to have some structure in place so that I keep things safe (e.g. no race conditions or starvation) while maintaining throughput when the 50 processes try to send a signal at the same tiem. So given my example I was wondering what are the properties that I need to maintain? For example should each call to the signal's operator() function be blocking (each signaling process must update all the slots listening for the signal before returning) or non-blocking (some other process handles updating the slots while the signaling process returns back to work right away). The final question is that if indeed the relationship of signals to slots is 1:N then the multi-threading problems begins to surface more predominately. That is T threads, where T is a Cart object, use 1 signal to notify N slots. We have a restricted resource, the 1 signal, to update N slots at various times during the lifetime of the T threads. Is this the problem of using the signal library with multiple threads? I will leave things there for now and await your response. Stephen

newbie question: large multiarray in a mult-file project

Hi, I need to declare a large multiarray in a multi-class project, something in the order of 10,000 x 300 x sizeof(a struct of 48 byte), I need to put the matrix in a header file so that other classes can see it. would it be a good idea to put all of the following lines in a header file? or the memory allocation should really be done in a .cpp file while leaving a pointer of some sort in the header? in other words, what would be a better way of declaring a large multiarray in a multi-file project? typedef boost::multi_array<xystruct, 2> xyType; //xystruct is a struct of 6 doubles xyType xy(boost::extents[10000][300]); many thanks mike

Date-Time question on seconds since epoch

I'd like to determine the total number of seconds between a date and the epoch ('00:00:00 1970-01-01 UTC'), The date can be in a timezone that has daylight savings. The date should be converted to UTC, with appropriate daylight savings adjustments made, and then the epoch subtracted from it. This should mirror the unix GNU 'date' utility, which can be run as: % TZ="America/New_York" date --date='2004-10-04 12:14:32' +%s 1096906472 I've looked at the doc, but it's not clear how to do this. VC7.1 compile errors using boost::multi_array with template functions

Template functions are necessary to be independent of the exact array type (multi_array_ref, subarrays, array_views and so on), dimension and element type. VC7 always deduces the 'ArrayType'-type for the template function wrong. The type VC7 uses for an instantiation is the direct base class (e.g. multi_array_ref instead of multi_array) instead of the actual argument type and in the end tries to call nonexistent member-functions and constructors. A search in the microsoft compiler-documentation didn't reveal a solution for my problem. So, is this a known bug/error/problem of VC7 and does anybody know an elegant workaround???? Graph: 2 questions on property maps and subgraphs

Hi, A couple of (newbie) questions on subgraphs and property maps: 1. I tried to re-run the example posted at http://lists.boost.org/MailArchives/boost-users/msg05889.php and I get a segfault whilst trying to assign name1[B1] - according to a follow-up message (http://lists.boost.org/MailArchives/boost-users/msg05891.php) that code snippet was supposed to be working fine. Am I doing something wrong? 2. Maybe it's another symptom of the same problem, but I am seeing runtime failures (invalid pointers) when I write code such as: > Graph *graph = wantFullGraph? rootGraph : subGraph; > MyPropertyMap mymap = get(my_type_t(), *graph); > for( v in all vertices in *graph) { > mymap[v] = blah; > } That is, after reading the docs my understanding is that if I pick up a property map from a (sub)graph, I can use the vertices in that (sub)graph to address into that map - everything should work fine provided that I am consistently using the same (sub)graph. I am trying to compile Serialization with out cygwin but serialization and other libraries in boost give the error "#error wide char i/o not supported on this platform" When I try to compile under the xp pro Command line. Is there some way this and the other libraries can be compiled under Mingw even if wide char i/o is not supported I don't really need wide char i/o I just want a way to use serialization xml as my base file types under both linux and windows. matrix.hpp usability

Hi, I guess this is a 'newbie' question, so I apologize if the answer is obvious to everyone but me. I've just installed boost 1.31 on an apple powerpc using fink. However, when I run compile for the dependent software that needs the boost libraries, I get the following: checking for boost/numeric/ublas/matrix.hpp presence in /sw/include...... yes checking for boost/numeric/ublas/matrix.hpp usability...... no Is there something I can do to matrix.hpp to make it usable? I've confirmed that it exists in the right place, and isn't empty or anything. compile 1_32 on darwin fails for test library (unit_test, prg_exec_monitor, etc)

I'm currently trying to compile all of boost on OS X (10.3.7), using TOOLS=darwin. I already read about the problems with xml_grammar, so I just added: #ifdef NDEBUG template class basic_xml_grammer<char>; #endif //NDEBUG This at least lets the compilation finish. And I'm not using boost::serialization yet. Hopefully Apple will get a fix (I am compiling with their latest build 1671). But I'm running into another problem during the link stage of the test libraries "libboost_unit_test_framework.dylib" It happens in both debug and release builds, I get: ld: Undefined symbols: init_unit_test_suite(int, char**) I found this function defined in auto_unit_test.hpp, and referenced in some of the .cpp files. Now, I'm guessing that this might be intentionally undefined, so that when you bind to the dynamic library, you define your own initialization (probably through a macro), and the library uses that. Has anyone else had this problem? I tried looking through the regression tests, but I haven't found anything that looks like this problem. I saw this post on the mailing list: http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.lib.boost.user/6489 But there were no follow-ups, so I decided to re-post. Is this just a problem with dynamic libraries on Mac, that they can't have undefined symbols? Or is it something else? If it just means that you can only use the static library, that's fine. Without read_write_mutex the size of gcc/release/shared build is 46K. With read_write_mutex the size is 136K. Wow, that's a difference! When I comment out explicit template instantiations in that source file, the library is becomes 76K. The comment says explicit instantination are needed to detect syntax errors in templates but those instantination bloat the library. BTW, I'm not sure read_write_mutex should be a template, either. Maybe, we need class polymorphic_mutex; and template<class Mutex> class concrete_polymorphic_mutex : public polymorphic_mutex { }; and read_write_mutex_impl must be implemented in terms of polymorphic_mutex? - Volodya

Hi, My platform is Linux (Fedora Core 2), gcc version: gcc (GCC) 3.3.3 20040412 (Red Hat Linux 3.3.3-7) I need to read and write the ATT graphviz format, so this is what I did: 1. Generated the libbgl-viz library. In boost_1_32_0/libs/graph/src/ directory, use the default Makefile, generated the libbgl-viz library without error. bug in mersenne twister

This is my first bug report(ever), so feel free to point out how I could do a better job of this... Anyways I have found a bug with the mersenne_twister random number generator class, where results when calling for a random number vary between codewarrior 9.0 and gcc 3.4.1 with boost 1.31.0. A simple example is shown below: #include <boost/random/mersenne_twister.hpp> // for mt11213b typedef boost::mt11213b base_generator_type; class foo { public: foo(const base_generator_type gen):m_gen(gen) {} ~foo(void) {} rand_type operator() ( void ) { const float x = m_gen(); return x; } private: base_generator_type m_gen; } int main(void) { base_generator_type gen( (uint32_t) 2000); seed is not important foo f(gen); cout << "Random result is " << f() << endl; } The resulting numbers will be different between codewarrior 9.0 running on windows and gcc 3.4.1 running on Suse linux 7.3.(Hope that is enough info). I tracked the cause of the bug down to class initialization. In the case of CW9.0, the compiler when constructing a foo, will use a mersenne_twister copy ctor when initializing m_gen, while in the case of gcc 3.4.1 it will choose the following in the .hpp file template<class Generator> explicit mersenne_twister(Generator & gen) { seed(gen); } therefore using the provided generator as a seed to the new generator rather than just copying its state, even though no template parameter is provided. Anyways I will leave it up to the more informed to decide which is more desirable/proper; however, this is a fairly nasty bug at the moment as

Serialization and shared_ptr

A question on serializing pointers to derived classes: When I serialize naked polymorphic pointers through base pointers, things work as expected, ie the derived classes are serailized and deserialized. However, when I replace the naked pointers with corresponding boost::shared_ptr's, I get an archive_exception, to the tune of "unregistered class". I'm using BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT, and not the register_type<> functions. Is this supposed to happen, or do I need some additional type registration beyond what was necessary for serializing naked pointers? Thanks! Jarl. The problem with {boost:: or tr1::}function and a signals system is that they both do the same thing: erase the static type of a function object so that it can be called through an entity that does not encode that type. The problem is that we need to call visit_each before we erase that type: 'function' shouldn't do it all the time, because that could be costly, and the signal/slot can't do it because the type is gone. We can probably come up with a not-too-painful solution, if we're clever enough. Doug

Dumb multi_array question about assignment

I'm currently working on a numerical project that uses boost.python, and since we already had boost as a dependency we've begun using boost/multi_array_ref to simplify multi-dimensional array handling in our code. I was rather surprised when the following code fragment spit out pages of errors when I tried to compile it: float* data = (float*) malloc(nx*ny*sizeof(float)); [...] boost::multi_array_ref<float, 2> xy(data, boost::extents[nx][ny]); xy = 0.; // errors out here Looking through the docs I realized that operator= isn't even mentioned, so perhaps I shouldn't have been surprised. It is rather unfortunate, though, that such a statement isn't allowed. (Unless, of course, I'm doing something wrong, which is completely possible.) Is there any plan to add such functionality in the future, or would it make more sense for us to switch to a different library (blitz++ or something similar)? Hi all, I'm new to Boost and have some questions about how to get data out of a vector<boost::variant<> > container. For this purpose I put together 'class Base' which holds a vector<boost::variant <Base*, DerivedBase*> > Pointers. I wrote a function template to insert pointers, but I have real difficulty extracting pointers. For example, if I insert 3 Base* pointers and 2 DerivedBase* pointers, I need to be able to extract the 3 Base * pointers and the 2 DerivedBase* pointers at a later point in time. Hello everybody, I have some problems trying to build the date_time libraries. I'm using: boost 1.32.0 stlport 4.6.2 MSVC7.1 (on Windows of course) with the following build command line: C:\Development\boost_1_32_0>bjam "-sTOOLS=vc-7_1-stlport" "-sSTLPORT_PATH=c:/Development" "-sstlport-iostream=on" the first build error I get is the following (which causes a whole cascade to follow): [...] C:\Development\boost_1_32_0\boost\lexical_cast.hpp(150) : error C2679: binary '>>' : no operator found which takes a right-hand operand of type 'boost::date_time::date_names_put<Config,charT,OutputIterator>::string_type' (or there is no acceptable conversion) [...] All of the other boost libraries build and link fine, so I don't think it's a general problem with my setup. If you intention is to release the pointer, reset(0) can achieve this. The document says: "void reset(T * p = 0); // never throws Deletes the object pointed to by the stored pointer and then stores a copy of p ". With reset, you should be able assign another pointer.

Could one boost developper make the changes? I am using boost 1.32.0.

I am having some trouble understanding just where I am supposed to put BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT macros for classes I write --- in class headers (.h), in class implementation files (.cc), in applications that plan to save/load through base pointers? I have base class B, from which I derive lots of classes. I tried putting the BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT in the header files of each class, but soon found that this resulted in link-time errors due to multiple definitions. So, I moved the macro to an implementation (.cc) file, creating it if necessary, with the form: #include "Derived.h" BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT(Derived); The problem with this is that I have an application that does this: #include "Base.h" #include "Derived.h" // fails with or without this void foo() { Base* b = load("file.xml"); } Now, since no instance of Derived is appearing in my application, the linker apparently does not pull in the (expanded) macro, and when I run the application, I get an unregistered class exception. So, I removed all of the macros from the implementation files and put them in a header (again), that is designed for applications that may want to serialize (any) of my derived classes: #include "Base.h" #include "Derived.h" #include "BoostExports.h" void foo() { Base* b = load("file.xml"); } and this works fine. So my question is this: is this what other people do, or are there other solutions that people prefer? The problem with the above is that if I have 20 derived classes and put all the macro exports in BoostExports.h, even if my application may only be interested in a smaller subset, I have to pull in 20 header files each time, and I had hoped to avoid that. This is not a terrible thing, I just wondered what other approaches there might be. Bill

Why using boost::function with lambda requires RTTI?

I am using CodeWarrior 9.3 for Palm OS development and I was looking at the possibility of using boost::function class in my code. Because my application is big and the data segment is already almost full (even if I uses extended mode), I do not want to uses RTTI (at all, if possible). When I compile the code I get the following warning "RTTI option is disabled" at the line with the following macro call BOOST_FUNCTION_COMPARE_TYPE_ID in function boost::detail::function::functor_manager::manage(). Also, a lambda function like (((1.0 * _1 + 2.0) * _1 + 3.0) * _1 + 4.0) * _1 + 5.0 cause my data segment to increase of 6K which is huge when the limit is 64K... Using a static function (and not using boost::lambda) instead does not cause such increase of the use of the data segment. Another thing that I have noticed is that the compiler get very slow as I am starting to uses some boost libraries like that (a few more seconds per file). Philippe

Problem using boost program_options on HP-UX

hi, I am using the boost/program_options and i had no problem when using with Linux (and gcc). I switched to HP-UX ( using gcc 3.2.2) and the boost part fails to compile. I get a error from "boost/program_options/detail/convert.hpp" related to wstring and wchar_t usage. If someone uses program_options on HP with gcc already , could you please let me know what needs to be done to get it working. I'm using gcc v 3.3, Red Hat Linux (not sure what version), and Boost 1.32. I'm trying to learn the serialization library, using the demo program from http://boost.org/libs/serialization/example/demo.cpp . I have had a little bit of trouble figuring out the boost install procedure for this library but I think I finally did it with: bjam "-sTOOLS=gcc" install --libdir=/home/max/boost --includedir=/home/max/boost -with-serialization But when I execute "g++ -I/home/max/boost/boost-1_32 -L/home/max/boost demo.cpp demo.o" I get a bunch of linker errors. I'm pretty sure I've messed up this install procedure somewhere, and the Boost docs have tentalizing references to serialization not having "automatic linking," but I can't figure out where to go next. Hello All, I'm trying to figure out if it is possible to use the preprocessor library to generate a unique token for a given translational unit suitable for use in a variable definition. __FILE__ doesn't work for obvious reasons. The motivation is use the template below to generate a unique function scope static "verbosity" for each translation unit. Serialization with NaN and infinity

I saw a thread on this topic from a few months ago, and I was wondering if there had been any progress or new thought on the topic. Essentially, it appears that the serialization library can't reliably deserialize the serialized version of NaN and infinity for doubles and floats. This seems to be a result of relying on the, AFAIK, undefined behavior of writing NaN/infinity to a stream; it will work correctly with some standard library implementations, but not all. I think the problem can be addressed with these changes: basic_text_oprimitive::save(float or double): on NaN or Infinity, write out some known, stable string (i.e. "nan" or "inf"); don't rely on std implementation. basic_text_iprimitive::load(float or double): look for the "known values" printed by save(), generating the correct values when they're seen. That's a lot of hand waving, to be sure, but something like this would really help out. Of course, a better solution would be fine with me, but there are definitely cases where it's necessary to serialize these values. Currently, there doesn't seem to be a way to reliably to it. Problem compiling the libraries with Dev-C++

Greetings, I've hit apon a slight problem when it comes to building the latest version of boost (1.32.0) with the tools which come with Dev-C++ (distro 4.9.9.1). The output directory of C:\boost and the "bin" directory the build makes were both deleted prior to trying to build the libraries with mingw32. For completeness the output from the g++ --version is; D:\Dev-Cpp\bin>g++ --version g++ (GCC) 3.3.1 (mingw special 20030804-1) Any tips or help would be appricated, I dont fancy having to try to link everything by hand... Interesting stuff, thanks all that replied. I think was just trying to related the function type to the syntax seen in other types, the fact is that the function type is a bit special I suppose, so I should really just take it by itself. I think I've seen all the possible uses for it thanks to the replies I've had here anyway. My question: Is the increment counter of the intrusive_ptr incremented only by doing the following (assigning a iterator to a dataset)? I was recently surprised to find that boost::bind seems to copy arguments a number of times when called. For example, this program: class C { public: C() {} C(const C &c) : data(c.data) { std::cout << "C(const C &c)\n"; } boost::array<char, 4000> data; }; void foo(const C &) {} int main(int a_argc, char **a_argv) { C c; boost::bind(&foo, c); return EXIT_SUCCESS; } results in this output (Visual C++ .NET with /O2): C(const C &c) C(const C &c) C(const C &c) C(const C &c) Four copies - I had hoped to only see a single copy. Logically, there doesn't seem to be a need for more than one copy. Is there an implementation issue that requires this many copies? I was hoping to use bind with some moderately weighted objects, however the number of copies that seem to occur may be prohibitive for me. handling exceptions in Boost threads

Is there a generally accepted way to handle exceptions in Boost threads? I have a main thread which spawns 4 children and waits for them all to finish with boost::thread_group::join_all. Dear all, i want to use the breadth_first_search algorithm to store the visited nodes e.g. in a list for access in the main function. Has anyone an idea to handle this? read_write_mutex assertion on multiprocessor Wintel

As I reported earlier, read_write_mutex asserts in debug mode (VC71), apparently seeing false wake-ups on a condition variable. I was able to do this with just a simple group of threads locking a RWM in tight loops, with one writer and a few readers. The new information is that I am runing this on a dual-Xeon with hyper-threading enabled (so four apparent CPU's), and I'm thinking that maybe boost libs don't get exercised on this kind of hardware very much. Is is possible that a condition::notify_all() happens on each processor? Has anyone else seen this? For now, I just removed the asserts and rebuilt. Synchronization seems to be unaffected in my real-world stress test of RWM. jh

Problem serializing (restoring) through base pointer

I have spent several hours combing the documentation and archives, but can't seem to find an answer to my problem. I have an abstract base class, Operation with a pure virtual function 'double value() = 0'. I derive a class, BinaryOperation from Operation. It takes as arguments an operation type (+, -, *, /) and two Operation pointers --- one for the left operand, one for the right. It stores these two pointers internally and uses them when the value() method is invoked. I derive two more classes from Operation, trivial, made-up, useless ones. One is called IncrementOperation, one is called DecrementOperation. I can save to an XML archive properly, but when I try to restore, it core dumps. I am running gcc-3.2. I have tried everything I can think of, but am stuck. I have tried using polymorphic_xml_iarchive (and corresponding output version), but it still fails. Hi, I'm currently playing around with Apache's Xerces XML library, and found myself needing to ->release some pointers. shared_ptr + mem_fn works great: shared_ptr<DOMBuilder> db( impl->createBuilder() , mem_fn(&DOMBuilder::release) ); But for the objects I'm using, I don't need a shared_ptr, but just a scoped_ptr. So I'm wondering about the rationale behind not giving scoped_ptr a custom deleter? Is it that shared_ptr's overhead is negligible (when not being shared I mean)? thanks

Boost.Serialization problems in VC 7.1

Hi, I'm trying to get the boost.serialization library to work, but I'm having some problems. I'm running VC 7.1, and I've tried both boost 1.32, and the latest CVS. I manage to compile and install the library, but when I try to compile and run the demo application that comes with it, I get a runtime error. It's compiling and linking perfectly, but at runtime I get a message box saying: "Unhandled exception at 0x7c59bbf3 in Test.exe: Microsoft C++ exception: __non_rtti_object @ 0x0012f8b0." Anyone had a problem like this before? Anyone know how to fix it?

thread::thread() in Windows

Hi. I believe that there is a bug in thread::thread() under Windows. The code uses GetCurrentThread() WinAPI function, but this is not enough. If you'll try to create such a thread object, and pass its reference to another thread which will join it - something like struct SomeThread { thread *m_thread; SomeThread(thread *a_thread) : m_thread(a_thread) { } void operator()() { do_some_work() m_thread->join(); delete m_thread; } }; { ...somewhere in the code... SomeThread st(new thread()); thread other_thread(st); } then it won't work. The following is a quote from MSDN about GetCurrentThread(): "The return value is a pseudo handle for the current thread... A pseudo handle is a special constant that is interpreted as the current thread handle... The function cannot be used by one thread to create a handle that can be used by other threads to refer to the first thread. The handle is always interpreted as referring to the thread that is using it. A thread can create a "real" handle to itself that can be used by other threads, or inherited by other processes, by specifying the pseudo handle as the source handle in a call to the DuplicateHandle function." The conclusion is that a call to DuplicateHandle() is needed after GetCurrentThread(). Thanks, Yuval

I'm not understanding something about the interaction of map with the algorithms. I've got a map whose value_type is another map. I'd like to iterate through the map entries and add all the "sub-map" entries to the "primary" map. I wrote a little testcase, attached below. has anyone been able to get demo_xml.cpp to compile using mingw in either cygwin, msys, or just at the regular command line in XP pro? If you ahve what is the command line you used to compile it. I haven't been able to find a Jamfile or a Makefile for them so I have been trying to figure out the correct libraries to link with it and am having no luck. Ken

[Regex] How to match the "End of buffer"/"End of string"?

Hi, I'm new in regex and this is my first post, so maybe the solution is obvious but I couldn't find it in google... I need to parse the multiline output of a command, every line ends with a \n except the last one, which actually it ends with the end of buffe ("\0" character). The output I need to parse is something like: "text1 this is a multiple-word text\n text2 another text" (the second line does not have a newline) As a result I want only two sub-expression in a line using a regex like: (\w+)\s+([^\n]+)\n The first submatch should be the first word ("text1" and "text2"), while the second submatch would be the rest of the line ("this is a multiple-word text" and "another text") In my program I use regex_search with the boost::match_continuous option, all the other regex objects are created with the default options. The first line matchs the regex expression without any problem but as the second line does not end with a "\n" it does not. I'm unable to find a good regex expression which can match the two possible "ends of line" (the \n or \0 character).. I've tried some expressions without success: 1.- First I tried to match \n || \0 using: (\w+)\s+([^\n\x00]+)([\n\x00]) but it seems the \x00 is not part of the buffer, so the second line does not match. 2.- Then I tried to use the "$" string without success (By the way, I assumed "$" would work as "\n" but it does not match the "end of line" character. When should I use??) 3.- In google I found that I should use "\z" or "\Z". I tried both, but they didn't work: The last line of the text never matches! (I suppose I need to add a new option to a regex object in order the "\z" o "\Z" strings to work) Finally I've found a workaround using the regex: (\w+)\s+([^\n]+)\n* and now it works but I would like to find a way to match the end of buffer/end of string. Problems with regex lib and Codewarrior

Hi, I'm having a problem trying to compile the regex library for Codewarrior 9.3 on the Mac, for an x86 target. There wasn't a Codewarrior project so I created my own and included the source code under libs/regex/src, I'm creating a static library. 1.31.0 and 1.32.0 have the same problem: The problem is that for a Codewarrior x86 target (running on a Mac), boost configures it's BOOST_USE_FACET macro to be the standard conforming std::use_facet. Codewarrior's use_facet takes two parameters in this case. I added the two following #defines to the C++ Preprocessor preference panel: #define BOOST_NO_STD_USE_FACET #define BOOST_HAS_TWO_ARG_USE_FACET and it compiled. Is this the right fix? Should all that boost configuration stuff have spotted this set up and configured accordingly? Thanks for any help. -- Steve.

Is there a mechanism in the boost::libraries in order to update these iterators (e.g. iterators, containers)? Memory leak while compiling boost

Hi! I tried to compile the boost lib from source with $ bjam "-sTOOLS=gcc" but while compiling the process "cc1plus" tends to consume memory quite fast, finally bringing the machine to a halt. Environment: SuSE 8.2, Kernel 2.4.20, all updates gcc (GCC) 3.3 20030226 (prerelease) (SuSE Linux) boost-jam 3.1.10 (also made from source) boost 1.32.0 My fault or a boost/bjam problem? If you take from boost graph 'examples/file_dependencies.cpp' and strip down some code, but change the graph type to: typedef adjacency_list<listS, listS, directedS, property<vertex_color_t, default_color_type>, property<edge_weight_t, int> > Graph; Graph g; default_dfs_visitor vis; depth_first_search(g, visitor(vis)); It gives C2678 on VC++ 7.1. boost::regex partial matches

Hello, I apologise in advance if this question is not direct to the right mailinglist, but this was the best I could find. The IRC channel also seems very quite... :) I am currently experimenting with the boost::regex library, and so far it seems to do just the thing I need. However, when I have a regex "[0-9]+[a-zA-Z]+" And want to match this against the string "42foo 42bar" It returns false. This is (as far as I can see) due to the library not taking partial matches too, even when I set the boost::match_partial and boost::match_any flags (which, according to my interpretation, should be doing the trick). Here is my statement: bool success = boost::regex_match(subject->c_str(), returns, expression, boost::match_partial | boost::match_any); I hope anyone has an idea what might be the problem here. Dear all, Yep, again it's me, and it's agian function_traits<>... AFAIK, std::iterator_traits<> is one of the counterparts of function_traits<>, not? A sort of symmetry which iterator_traits<> has got is that it can work for Iterators as well as plain pointers. This seems to be not the case for function_traits<>. That is, you can pass a function type to it, but you can't do that for a functor. Is that right? PROBLEM: How to determining the correct type to use at run time?

I want to expand the File_Base virtual interface here to allow me to pass the 'file_data' from the File class without have two sets of code: if (size == 32) 32 bite code else 64 bite code How do I expand the File_base interface? Is there a way to grab the type of a variable passed into a function and reuse it at run time? Help requested: is_directory fails unexpected

Hi all I'm developing a little application (at the moment with VS.NET) using the boost::filesystem part to keep it portable. In the code I use the is_directory() function which fails unexpected when testing files with special characters ("little squares") in it. I tracked it down to the GetFileAttributesA-function which gives the error 123 ("The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect."). After reading some pages in the internet, I assume that the only two solutions would be a) rename all those files first or b) make an own solution with the (unicode-enabled) function GetFileAttributesW which makes my app less portable (and will give me some headaches again). I have found that it is bossible to create an in place functor like object by combining function, bind and shared_ptr. However altough it seems to work I am not sure whether this is safe usage. [MPL] transform and unpack_args

All right, I'm still trying to figure out the MPL lambda stuff. I had expected this to work: template<typename Arg> some func { typedef ... type; }; typedef transform< sequence, some_func<_> >::type result; But I get a compiler error about a missing apply<> in some_func. This works: typedef transform< sequence, quote1<some_func> >::type result; I don't understand why the placeholder doesn't convert some_func to an appropriate metafunction class. Similarly, I tried to use unpack args: template<typename Arg1, typename Arg2> some_func2 { typedef ... type; }; typedef transform< zipped_sequence, unpack_args<some_func2<_,_> >::type result; The compiler complained about a missing apply<> in some_func2. Again, this worked: typedef transform< zipped_sequence, unpack_args<quote2<some_func2> > >::type result; Is it because I'm using _ rather than _1 and _2? read_write_mutex asserting

Boost 1.32.0 on MSVC71 I have a test where I have one writer and five readers, each attempting the appropriate lock for their function on a read_write_mutex, and none doing it recursively. It keeps asserting on me like this: .....Assertion failed: ++loop_count == 1, file read_write_mutex.cpp, line 173 The above happens (in do_write_lock()) when I select reader_priority. Something similar happens in do_read_lock() when I select writer_priority. while (m_state == -1 || m_num_readers_to_wake == 0) { BOOST_ASSERT(++loop_count == 1); //Check for invalid loop conditions (but will also detect spurious wakeups) ++m_num_waiting_readers; m_waiting_readers.wait(l); --m_num_waiting_readers; } In release mode, it's fine, but what could be causing these "spurious wakeups"?

Newbie Issues linking Boost Unit Test Framework

I am attempting to use the Boost Unit Test Framework but am running into difficulties figuring out which lib to link to. I am compiling with MS VC++ 7.1. I have tried many of the libs which were created by the build, but these all create more errors (typically to do with redefinitions of std:: functions). Hello, I am trying to convert from wchar_t to std::string with #include <iostream> #include <sstream> #include <boost/lexical_cast.hpp> int main() { std::cout << boost::lexical_cast<std::string>(L"blah") << std::endl; return 0; } but I get the following error: d:\SDK\boost\include\boost-1_32\boost\lexical_cast.hpp(158) : error C2679: binary '=' : no operator found which takes a right-hand operand of type 'std::basic_stringstream<_Elem,_Traits,_Alloc>::_Mystr' (or there is no acceptable conversion) Any ideas? This behaviour, however, is not that much desirable, and I'm seaking some sort of good random seed. Any suggestions? Hi! I have the following questions about boost.thread: 1) Did I miss an abstraction about atomic operations, e.g. for ++, --, +=, -=, <, ==, =, ... for uint8_t, uint16_t, uint32_t, ... (something like InterlockedIncrement() on WIN32)? I know that I can Mutexes and Locks to implement the desired behavior, but I think a more lightweight solution for this basic operations should be available, too. 2) How can I change the priority of a boost::thread? 3) boost::shared_ptr<> and boost::weak_ptr<> are not thread safe, are they? What is the suggested way to write thread safe implementations of them? Kosta

Hello, Just a general interest question which came to me reading the email below. Are there any critera for what can/can't be added to boost? Somebody was telling me about ACE recently, which apprently attempts to wrap POSIX with C++. It looks like there is overlap there with Boost. Does Boost have some similar aim, to be a set of libraries covering a certain anlge, or is it litterally a collection of useful code? Would something like a GUI abstraction system be considered? Or is the limit perhaps things that could resonably make it into the STL? Hope that isn't off topic, Thanks! I'm getting a handful of the following errors and warnings while trying to build with boost regex in MS Visual C++ .NET with the /clr option (managed extensions). boost_1_32_0\boost\regex\v4\match_results.hpp(189): warning C4561: '__fastcall' incompatible with the '/clr' option: converting to '__stdcall' error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol "public: class boost::reg_expression<char,class boost::regex_traits<char>,class std::allocator<char> > & __stdcall boost::reg_expression<char,class boost::regex_traits<char>,class std::allocator<char> >::operator=(class boost::reg_expression<char,class boost::regex_traits<char>,class std::allocator<char> > const &)" (??4?$reg_expression@DV?$regex_traits@D@boost@@V?$allocator@D@std@@@boos t@@$$FQAGAAV01@ABV01@@Z) The debug build works fine because config.hpp defines BOOST_REGEX_CALL to _cdecl. newbie-problem with using boost.python

Such macros can also be used on good compilers* to describe traits that it can't figure out, such as has_nothrow_assign<T> * compilers supporting partial template specialization
