[BGL] BFS visitor question

Hello, I'm using the BFS visitor that appears in the BGL book (p 66), which can also be found here: http://boost.org/libs/graph/doc/kevin_bacon.html I would like to compute a quantity that depends on the bacon number of a vertex, but only to distance d_max as my graphs are quite big (and I need to compute the quantity for each vertex, so I want a speedy computation). Ideally, I'd like to write something like the code below (my code appears after the comment), but this doesn't seem to work. Linker Problems with VC 7.1/ Boost 1.32 / Stlport 4.61

Hi, I've been happily using Boost 1.32 with Visual C++ 7.1 for a few months. Now I'd like to switch to STLPort, but can’t get my project to compile with STLPort due to linker errors (LNK2019 and LNK2001) in every boost library I use (signals, filesystem, thread). First I installed STLPort and to make sure that it is working properly with a dummy (boostless) project. Then I re-compiled boost with the stlport toolset: bjam "-sTOOLS=vc-7_1-stlport" "-sSTLPORT_PATH=C:\Programme\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003\add-ons" "-sSTLPORT_VERSIONS=4.6.1" "-sPYTHON_ROOT=c:/Programme/Python24" install Last but not least, I recompiled my project (multithreaded, static runtime) which is using boost. Can you give me some tests? I can run them and check. multi_array_ref timing issue

We have a real-space convolution code that we noticed was running notably slower in our c++ version than it was in our f90 version. So, we extracted out the key part of the code and started seeing if we could find a bottleneck. Also, I've managed successfully to have a shared_array member as part of another class's instantiation. The only difference that I see is the timing of when they're instantiated. Could it be anything to do with the initialisation of my pthread environment? (what initialises pthreads?) I'll do some experiments around this. If it is of interest, this is all being done in a Mac OS X Cocoa Objective-C environment. Cocoa likes to know when it is going multi-threaded (http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Cocoa/Conceptual/ Multithreading/articles/CocoaDetaching.html) and I do let it know, but maybe I should let it know earlier. Regexp without ^ and $

I am using regex_match() from Boost 1.32.0. I am well famililar with Perl's regular expression, but I got a surprise from Boost's regex_match(). My basic code is static const regex CHAR(" char "); regex_match(newSpec, CHAR) If newSpec is " char ", then it matches, of course. However, if newSpec is " char * ", it doesn't match. Hmmmm. In my Perl experience, a regex of " char " says match those six characters if found ANYWHERE in newSpec. This would mean that a Boost regex of " char " would match a newSpec of " char * ", but it doesn't seem to. If I change the regex to ".* char .*", then it matches, implying that Boost's regex of " char " is being treated as if it were Perl's "^ char $". I could add the ".*" before and after each of my (many) regular exressions. However, I'm guessing there is a match_flag_type value which would do this for me. Unfortunately, none of the match constant descriptions seem to be what I need. How should I write a Boost regex so that it would find " char " anywhere in the input string regardless of any prefix or suffix? Merrill

Hello fellow boosters! I am looking to use boost:any. While gaining an understanding of how to use it, it strikes me that the real purpose it serves is that the virtual table functionality is exposed to the user. It seems that efficiency of table lookup are then the application responsibility. My first question - Is this a reasonable understanding? I have been looking to see if tag dispatching can somehow circumvent the cost of table lookup that would be necessary, and the only thing that strikes me is to - store a type id within the type boost::any represents, - retrieve this id and either use it in an if/else structure, or a function pointer lookup in an array. A complete tag dispatch implementation seems impossible, since the type id within the boost::any structure is a run time quantity. My second question - Are there better ways to do it than an index into an array of functions? Include boost in software distribution?

Hi, I'm packaging some software for distribution, and the software depends upon the 'program_options' library. I don't want to assume that the user has boost installed, or ever jam. So I was wondering about the potential for automagically building and using the 'program_options' library if it is not already present on the user's system. I would include the source files in libs/program_options/, and write a small Makefile for it. I would also include all the Boost headers. Is this sufficient, even though it wouldn't run the Boost configure script to determine system-specific settings? Can you see any problems in building this library without doing a full Boost install? Problem using boost::bind and ecore_ipc from Enlightenment

Hi all, i just subscribed to this List ;) I have a Problem with C++ Member Functions and Pointers to this Member Functions so that they fit into a Function with take a normal Function. I guess i'm a Newbie, otherwise i should have already solved it, i think. ;) I want to use IPC Stuff from Ecore. But before you can make use of ecore_ipc you must initialize it, as far as i can see. I atached 4 Files, where i build a little Scenario: 1. Example.cpp // The Main Program 2. Testclass.hpp 3. Testclass.cpp 4. Makefile // Perhaps you must adjust some of the Variables I commented the important Points in the Code again. So i must first call ecore_ipc_init() // Testclass Line 68 and must supply 3 Functions to ecore for handling Events 1. A Function that is called, when a new IPC Server is added 2. A Function that is called, when a IPC Server is deleted 3. A Function that is called, when some Message is sent Namely: ecore_event_handler_add( ECORE_IPC_EVENT_SERVER_ADD, ipc_server_add, NULL ); ecore_event_handler_add( ECORE_IPC_EVENT_SERVER_DEL, ipc_server_del, NULL ); ecore_event_handler_add( ECORE_IPC_EVENT_SERVER_DATA, ipc_server_data, NULL ); "ipc_server_add", "ipc_server_del" and "ipc_server_data" are the functions that are available outside the Class Testclass The Example Program as it is compiles and i can start it, the ecore_pic_init() succeds the 3 Functions get "registered" but this 3 submitted Functions are standing outside my Testclass, but my Target is to have they inside my Testclass. boost::shared_ptr vs. NULL

I'm running Boost 1.32.0 under MinGW, so NULL is 0 rather than (void*)0. While I understand what smart pointers are all about, this is the first time I've tried converting code with conventional pointers to use smart pointers. My original application had class data members such as Node *mParent; which were initialized to NULL in the class constructor initialization lists. Later, the data members were assigned pointers to real Node objects. In particular, the application needs at various times to detect whether the data member is NULL or a "real" node and to occassionally set real nodes to NULL. OK, now I'm trying to convert to shared_ptrs. So, I have a typedef for notation convenience: typedef boost::shared_ptr<Node> NodePtr; The class data member declaration now looks like NodePtr mParent; but, how do I initialize it to NULL? In the smart pointer world *is* there such a thing as a generic NULL that can be assigned to all smart pointers. Or, will I need something like NodePrt NullNodePtr; // never initialized then assign mParent = NullNodePtr; This would mean that I would been a NullXPtr for every smart pointer type X I have. If that's the way it must be, then OK, but I would like to know how things are supposed to be done. Merrill

Hi there, I'm converting over our codebase to make use of the boost libs. Is there a way to manually lock and unlock a boost:mutex? Or, is there a conditional lock available? I know there is boost::mutex::scoped_lock that does it automatically. Here is code example that, I think, requires manual locking: void foo() { if( condition ) oMutex.lock; do something if( condition ) oMutex.unlock; } It might be that our code isn't designed very well for using boost::mutex. questions concerning optional + date_time + serialize

Hi All! I've got few questions concerning the date_time, optional and serialization libs (1.32) and how they work together. I'm trying to serialize a optional<posix_time::time_duration> using a binary Archive. Unfortunately the extraction code fails to compile. This is because the optional<T> requires T to have a default constructor, when extraction from an archive (see code take from optional.hpp below). I changed the code ( see blow) to work around this. I know that is neither efficient (heap usage) nor exception safe but it works for me. Also it requires operator=. But ptime has got this. Does any body have more advanced suggestions to solve this? Another thing is that I'm unable to serialize not_a_date_time ptimes. The extractions fails here. I'm using the binary archive. Is that supported? The documentation of date time only states compatibility with text and XML archive... Gennadiy, I re-built the libs just as you said. I then copied the newly built static library to the stage/lib directory where I have all of the others. Unfortunately, I still got the same undefined. HOWEVER!... This is the first time I've noticed the boost_1_32_0/bin directory. I tried copying test_tools.obj into the directory with my own object files, added test_tools.obj to the list of my own object files in my make, and the link WORKED! To me, that says the Boost code if OK, but I've messed up makefile. (It's been many years since I've had to do battle with a raw makefile, and it wasn't GCC's make then.) I've appended an excerpt from my makefile. The "test" target is the one that gets the undefined referenced UNLESS test_tools.obj is included in the ${testobjs} list. (Yes, there is a TAB before ${CXX}.) What's wrong with the makefile? I'm even more confused after looking at the URL and test file you suggested. All of the examples in those documents require you to explicitly construct and provide a time zone using a name or an offset from UTC. I don't want to have to hardcode a timezone in my program -- I just want to use whatever time zone that the user has configured on their computer. The c_local_adjustor did this for me in 1.32 (although as noted in my original email, it only solves half of the problem). Perhaps I missed something in the URL you sent, but I didn't see anything in there which simply uses the timezone in use on the local machine. Just as a follow up to this, let me describe what I'm trying to do. I would like the current time in UTC with microsecond resolution. Well, the microsec_clock class only provides a local_time() method (unlike the second_clock class which also provides universal_time()). So, I need to convert the result of local_time() into UTC but I can't since the only class which knows the local timezone is c_local_adjustor and it does not provide local_to_utc() (only utc_to_local()). If there is a better way to get the current time in UTC with microsecond resolution, I'd be happy to use it instead. Gennadi, Thanks for the suggestions. I had reduced the failing test to a single BOOST_MESSAGE() macro call to simplify the error output. (All of the regex stuff links fine with the DLL.) When I try linking my entire test file, *ALL* of the unresolved references involve test_tools::tt_detail::... It's as if just the test tool details weren't created. If I remove the test tools library reference from the Makefile, then I get undefined test tools references for *OTHER* than details. So, at least something in the library is being used by the linker--just not the stuff from the details. I have no idea why the detail references would have been dropped. I have tried rebuilding the entire Boost library with bjam -sTOOLS=mingw -sMINGW_IMPLEMENTATION_DIR=E:\MinGW stage (I may have mis-remembered the exact name for the implementation directory, but I got it right.) This time I captured the output. There were error message about the serialization library because of wide characters, but no complaints about any of the others. The rebuilt library gives the same errors. I would certainly like to use the Boost test library, but for the moment, I'm going to have to go back to implementing it myself. Merrill

Question about date

I searched the group and didn't see anything that answered my question about date although I may have just not recognized it when I read it. The date constructor will throw exceptions if you use an invalid date: date d(2005,2,29); Throws an exception because there is no 29th of February in 2005. If one does the following: string ds("20050229T000000"); date d(from_iso_string(ds)); there is no exception and like localtime() and gmtime() it actually changes the date silently to 20050301. (ptime also does this.) Was this done intentionally perhaps to be consistent with localtime() etc although that begs the question of why there was an exception in the first case of date construction? Or perhaps I forgot to do something?

Hi Oleg! your function Handler::Test2 takes 2 arguments + this. But your code passes 3 arguments + this to the function boost::bind(&Handler::Test2, _1, _2, a, b)). If I'm not completely mistaken that cannot work. What did you expect the _2 to be in this case?. Using the _2 also implies that the resulting function of the bind expects 2 arguments. That is you cannot simply use it with for_each in that kind of way. [Signals] Proposal effort for TR2

At the C++ committee meeting in Lillehammer last April, I'd asked if there was any interest in a TR2 proposal for the Signals library, and got a positive response. bjam and environment variable DOT

In building boost I ran into an issue with bjam in having DOT as an environment variable and I did not find any other posts documenting the problem so I am adding this to save others the effort. DOT is in my environment for doxygen to find. Once I cleared DOT for the build everything seemed to be fine. Hi. I discovered the following problem using boost::tokenizer. I believe it is a bug in the std::string::assign implementation (i.e. not boost directly), but a the workaround for msvc in boost/token_functions.hpp, line 215-228 has also been tried for the GCC but it just moves the problem; it will mibehave when the line tokenizer values(std::string(",hello,"), sep); is replaced with tokenizer values(std::string("hello,"), sep); since it will then print "hel". [Iterators] Change in transform_iterator from 1.31 to 1.32?

We have a class that contains a std::map. This class wants to provide its clients with iterators over just the values in the map, hiding the fact that there's a map under the covers at all. transform_iterator seems like just the ticket, and with Boost 1.31 we used these methods: typedef std::map<KEYTYPE, VALUETYPE> MapType; typedef boost::transform_iterator< boost::function<const MapType::mapped_type&(const MapType::value_type&)>, MapType::const_iterator > const_iterator; const_iterator begin() const { return boost::make_transform_iterator(mymap.begin(), boost::bind(&MapType::value_type::second, _1)); } const_iterator end() const { return boost::make_transform_iterator(mymap.end(), boost::bind(&MapType::value_type::second, _1)); } The above compiled cleanly, except when it caused a compiler ICE, and the instances that compile seem to run okay. Now we're trying to upgrade to Boost 1.32 -- I know, a little late in the 1.32 lifespan. The same code now produces an ominous warning (full text at end of message): c:/videobranch\boost\boost\function\function_template.hpp(111) : warning C4172: returning address of local variable or temporary When it finally gets around to mentioning a line number in our own source code, the indicated line is the return statement in the above begin() method. The reason I'm concerned is that when compiled with Boost 1.32, our program suffers mysterious crashes that it did not when compiled with Boost 1.31. :-( I don't *know* that this warning is related, but I thought it prudent to try to eliminate such warnings to see if that might help. I can't figure out what temporary is driving the warning, though. I tried factoring out our own code a couple of different ways without making the warning go away. Can you suggest anything? date_time: from local time to UTC

I am using Boost 1.31 data time library with MSVC6. I want to use local TZ setting to transfer a local time to utc time. I noticed that we can use boost::date_time::c_local_adjustor<ptime>::utc_to_local() to change a utc time to local time based on local TZ settings. But this class does not have local_to_utc(). While boost::date_time::local_adjustor<ptime, -5, us_dst>::local_to_utc() works, it does not use local TZ settings. Is there anyway I can use local TZ setting to do the translation? Thanks

Test Tools Linking Problem

I am an experienced programmer, but new to the Boost Libraries. I am using Boost 1.32.0 with MinGW under XP Pro. I have successfully compiled and link a program to the boost_regex-mgw-mt-1_32.dll Now I am trying use Boost test tools to write tests for it. When I compile and link, the compile passes without warnings, but the link fails with undefined reference to 'boost::test_tools::tt_detail::message_impl( boost::basic_wrap_stringstream<char>&, boost::unit_test::basic_cstring<char const>, unsigned int)' I initially set up to statically link with libboost_unit_test_framework-mgw-mt-1_32.lib. When I got the undefined reference, I added libboost_test_exec_monitor-mgw-mt-1_32.lib and libboost_prg_exec_monitor-mgw-mt-1_32.lib, "just in case." Still undefined. Eventually, I tried added in almost all of the static libraries PLUS copies all of the DLL into the program directory. Still undefined. At that point, I figured that something more than an incomplete makefile is the problem here. Anyone have any idea what I've missing? Merrill

Hi, I am having difficulty overloading validate() of boost::program_options to do conversion of doubles. Two Threads sharing a mutex

Hi there, please help me out. Seems I lost my brain over the last weekend. ;-)) I'm trying to get myself familiar with the boost::thread lib, by reading an article by Bill Kempf published in the C++ magazine in 2002. Here in listing no. 4 he is using two thread (a reader and a writer ) to access a buffer. In the put() and get() he is using one mutex. If the buffer is empty he uses a condition variable to block the mutex. I don't understand how a writer can then enter the put() and write an item into the buffer? The mutex was just blocked by the reader thread? I guess my question is more fundamental to threads. But hopefully there is someone that can help me out. Thanks ahead, Christian

BGL Question/Advice which algorithm to use

Hi, This is a request for some advice/recommendations regarding which algorithm(s) to use with Boost.Graph to solve a graph sorting problem for graphs that are *almost, but not quite* DAGs. If anybody has some insight into this type of situation help will be greatly appreciated. Ideally I do a topological sort to find the most dependent vertex (if that makes sense) which then becomes the root of an n-ary tree, and then build the tree from that vertex recursively finding the out-edges of child vertices. All that works provided the graph is actually a DAG. But sometimes it isn't because there can be small cycles(?) inside the graph where one vertex refers to its parent's parent's vertex. So everything in the graph can be suitable for a DAG except for this small set of vertices that becomes self-referential. This small set of vertices, while not expendable, is certainly never going to contain the desired vertex to create a root, for various reasons. So during the search phase they can be safely ignored, at least that's a fairly safe operating assumption as of now. I still need to find the most dependent vertex, and I can't use topological sort here, so what algorithm can I use? Or if I still need to use topological sort here, would I clone the graph object and remove this set of vertices to create a DAG for the sake of the sort? problem using boost::filesystem

Hello... I am triing to use the boost::filesystem library. But actually i am stucked using it. I have WindowsXP without a service pack. I am using Visual Studio 6.0 installed in default folders for VS6. I am using stlport but without the iostreams. After uncompressing boost, i compiled boost with bjam with following statement: bjam "-sTOOLS=msvc-stlport" "-sSTLPORT_VERSION=4.6" "-sSTLPORT_PATH=..\stlport" "-sBUILD=debug <stlport-iostream>off" stage Compilation has no errors and all libs are build. Now i want to use boost::filesystem::path, example: #include <boost/filesystem/path.hpp> int main(int argc, char* argv[]) { boost::filesystem::path( "foo" ); } What happens, is that the program stops on that command and does nothing! If i use following code: boost::filesystem::path( "C:\\" ); System makes an kernal32 exception and crashs. I've also noticed that when in/out edge lists are stored in an associative container and the parallel edges are allowed, i.e multiset is used, the functions remove_edge()/clear_vertex() do not work as efficient as they could. The calls to these functions (in my case) result in the following sequence of calls: // O(E/V) template <class EdgeList, class vertex_descriptor> void erase_from_incidence_list(EdgeList& el, vertex_descriptor v, allow_parallel_edge_tag) { boost::graph_detail::erase_if(el, detail::target_is<vertex_descriptor>(v)); } Then: template <class Container, class Predicate> void erase_if(Container& c, Predicate p) { erase_if_dispatch(c, p, container_category(c), iterator_stability(c)); } Then: template <class AssociativeContainer, class Predicate> void erase_if_dispatch(AssociativeContainer& c, Predicate p, associative_container_tag, stable_tag) { typename AssociativeContainer::iterator i, next; for (i = next = c.begin(); next != c.end(); i = next) { ++next; if (p(*i)) c.erase(i); } } The complexity of the search operation is linear, so multiset doesn't provide a performance advantage over containers such as vector or set. However, the function erase_if_dispatch() could use multiset's equal_range() member function, which would result in O(log n) complexity of the search. I understand that the reason erase_if_dispatch() is written in the way it is written, is probably that the function is generic with regard to the predicate and doesn't do assumptions on it. However, in the case erase_if_dispatch() is called from erase_from_incidence_list(), where the predicate is set, the function (its special specialization) could make assumption that the predicate is actually the same as the predicate used to sort the in/out edge list itself (the target vertex), and therefore could use equal_range() to boost the performance of the function. --Yulik.

I would like to convert between std::wstring and std::string using lexical_cast and finally discovered in an old posting that you must manually provide template specializations for these types as below. Boost.Regex error: match_results error

hi, when I have built the Boost.Regex libarary,and then I tested the samples of the regex. Then I found the credit_card_example correct while the capture_example error. Troubling building Boost for Borland C++ Builder 6

When building Boost for C++ Builder 6 and Boost 1.32, the serialization libray fails to build. The reason for this is that it attempts to use the latest Spirit header files and this does not support C++ Builder 6. What makes this doubly annoying is that the only reason that serialization needs to use Spirit is to support XML serialization. So even if I will never be using serialization for XML serialization, but will use it for the more mainstream binary serialization, I can not use this library with C++ Builder 6. Clearly this is a case for a built library to be split up into sub-libraries, so that there would be a built serialization library supporting binary serialization, which would not be dependent on Spirit, and a built serialization library supporting XML serialization, which would be dependent on Spirit. In this case I would be able to build the library that did not depend on Spirit for C++ Builder and I would not care, if I never used XML serialization, whether or not the library that was built to support XML serialization could be built for C++ Builder 6. In the serialization documentation it says that one can build serialization so that it can be used with C++ Builder 6 by downloading the standalone version of Spirit 1.6, installing that, and setting the SPIRIT_ROOT environment variable to the directory where Spirit 1.6 is installed. Despite having done this, any attempt to build serialization for C++ Builder 6 ends with error messages showing that header files for Spirit in the main Boost directory, rather in the Spirit 1.6 directory, are being used in the process to build the serialization library. The error message comes from spirit/core/config.hpp in my Boost 1.32 directory tree that C++ Builder 6 is not supported. In the Spirit 1.6 distribution there is no spirit/core/config.h. While I understand that a particular library may not want to support a particular compiler/version because that compiler is deficient in the C++ standard requirments to support that library, I feel that if a library is marked as supporting a compiler/version it should do so. In the case of serialization in Boost 1.32 it is marked as supporting C++ Builder 6 when clearly it does not according to my efforts.

I'm reasonably sure that I have Boost set up properly because I can use the strongly connected components stuff w/ adjacency lists just fine. Missing functions in date_time library

I am using the boost date_time library and noticed that there is a from_ftime() function to convert a FILETIME into a ptime, but I could not find the reverse operation to_ftime(). Am I missing it somewhere? Likewise, I am using the c_local_adjustor::utc_to_local() function and cannot find the corresponding local_to_utc() function in c_local_adjustor. Thanks, Sean

Trouble building Boost for Comeau

When I attempt to build the Boost libraries for the Comeau compiler using vc71 as my backend, each build line fails with: "Command-line error #595: too many arguments on command line" Is there a workaround to this problem ? I am surprised to see that for compilers which support the use of a file to hold command line parameters the build process does not use this technique, which leads to such an error.

performance issue with graph edge removal

Hi, Our project has recently run into severe performance issue with remove_edge() function of Boost graph. In our particular case, we use adjacency list specialized as: typedef adjacency_list< listS, vecS, bidirectionalS, CdfgNodeProperty, CdfgEdgeProperty> CdfgType; At some point in the flow, we need to remove great amount of edges from the graph, an amount comparable to the total number of edges in the graph. Unfortunately, since the complexity of removal of each edge is about O(E/V) the complexity of removal of all edges is about O(E * E/V). This appears to be too much, when the number of edges is big. What is actually interesting about this situation, is that I see no way to remove all edges (let's say we need to remove all edges) with any Boost function and with any adjacency list specialization in O(E) complexity, not necessarily the one we're currently using. The O(E/V) complexity of the remove_edge() comes from the fact that there is a need to remove the edge from in/out edge lists of the vertices connected by the edge. Even though I know I will not need any of these lists after all edges are removed, remove_edge() doesn't know that, so it is doing the "extra" work of updating the lists one-by-one. Moreover, in case of edge lists such as vector/list/multiset, i.e. containers that allow parallel edges in the graph, the search is linear in the size of containers (resulting in O(E/V) complexity of the operation). The question is what can be done, in any way, to do this "simple" operation of removing all edges of the graph in "more reasonable" complexity O(E) instead of O(E * E/V)? It doesn't help to try to remove many edges at once, such as using clear_in_edges() function to remove all in-edges of the given node, or clear_vertex() to remove all edges of the given node, because these functions still have to remove all the edges being removed from the edge list of the connected nodes. This results in the same complexity of the operation, as with using repetitive remove_edge() calls. It also doesn't help using other containers for storing in/out edge lists, such as list or multiset, instead of vector. Although the removal operation is faster in these containers, the search operation that looks for the edge to be removed is still in the order of the size of the container. For containers such as set or hash set, the search operation is faster, but such containers do not allow parallel edges, since the edges are indexed by the node identifier on the other side of the edge. The search operation that looks for the edge to be removed is in the order of the size of the container because it is necessary to find all the parallel edges. Therefore, for implementations allowing parallel edges, the implementation goes over all edges stored in the container and checks whether the edge connects to the node whose edges are being removed (in case of clear_in_edges()/clear_vertex()). If it is, the edge is removed from the in/out edge list. In our graph implementation, we need to support parallel edges. Even without parallel edges, the total complexity of removal of all edges still can't be brought down to O(E) (only to O(E * log(E/V))). If I would be free to change Boost's graph implementation, one possible solution could be to store in each edge two iterators pointing to the position of this edge in the corresponding in/out edge lists. This would allow removal of the edge from "list" container in O(1). However, it doesn't seem to be possible to do with current Boost implementation. Still, even if it would be possible, the memory consumption would increase due to the storage of the two iterators (at least two additional extra pointers per edge). Another approach could be to index the edges in in/out edge lists by edge identifier (which is not a part of Boost graph infrastructure), instead of indexing them by node identifier. This would allow using "multiset" container to find the edges to remove faster (in logarithmic time). But this still doesn't seem to be possible to do with current Boost implementation and it will also incur a memory overhead (due to usage of complex container as multiset). And still the complexity will be more than O(E). Is there a way to remove all edges in O(E) complexity? Do I miss something, or there is an inherent performance issue in current Boost graph implementation with regard to the edge removal? Even if the current situation is by design due to memory consumption trade offs, I wish the graph implementation would be flexible enough to let the user control performance/memory balance, instead of requiring the performance hit. Or, at least, to provide an atomic function for removal of all edges of the graph, which can be easily implemented to work fast and without incurring any memory overhead with all underlying in/out edge container implementations (just clear all edge-related containers). Hi, I am attempting use bundled properties for my graph processing. My attempt to 'write_graphviz' fails because of a lack of an vertex_index as an internal property. But how does one specify this? BGL: EdgeIterator construction of graphs

Hi everybody! I'm trying to initialize my adjacency_list graph via an EdgeIterator. Since I do not want parallel edges to be present in my graph, but still use vecS as EdgeList-storage because of memory considerations, my EdgeIterator needs somehow a reference to the graph under construction. Some code might explain it better: typedef boost::adjacency_list<boost::vecS, boost::vecS, boost::undirectedS > graph_t; typedef boost::my_edge_iterator<base_rand_gen_t, graph_t> SFGen; graph_t bg = graph_t(SFGen(bg, base_rand, 100), SFGen(), 100); This code compiles fine, but seg-faults immediatly since bg does not seem to be defined when my iterator gets constructed. A solution would be to provide a add_edge_range-function which gets as input the EdgeIterator and the corresponding empty boost graph. Building Boost for Comeau

In the explanation for como-win32 toolset configuration variables, the variable COMO_BACKEND_PATH, which says "Path to backend compiler" has a default value of $(VC7_TOOLS). Running vcvars32.bat for vc7 does not set any such environment variable. To what does the COMO_BACKEND_PATH need to be set ? Is it the path to the backend compiler executable itself or is it the path to the entire installation ? If I had Vc7 installed in c:\vsnet, would COMO_BACKEND_PATH be c:\vsnet or would it be c:\vsnet\vc7\bin ?

BGL: Average path distance implementation

I am writing a graph application using BGL where a key component is cycle detection. I need to know how long a cycle is. I can use breadth first search, but that gives me the shortest path. What I want is the average path length. I have an idea for an algorithm for this: basically do a breadth first search, disallowing any edge if it's been used before in this path and then take the mean of all the complete paths from the node to itself. Can anybody give me some clues as to how I can implement this? I would prefer to use the pucker event visitor approach, but I'm not sure whether I can use this to alter the search process. I'll need to cull a path from the search if it encounters a node with no outgoing edges that haven't been used already. I'm also not sure how to collect all the path lengths at the end. Is there some compiler setting that I can change to get rid of this warning? Shouldn't I be able to include a Boost library without getting warnings? Hello, I would like to use the numeric::interval library on an Alpha EV 6.8 processor under the OSF1 operating system. My program runs fine under Linux on a Pentium 4, but on the Alpha machine, g++ tells me: boost/numeric/interval/hw_rounding.hpp:26:4: #error Boost.Numeric.Interval: Please specify rounding control mechanism. What has to be done? Where do I have to specifiy the rounding controls, how much do I need to know about processor internals etc? Which tests can and have to be done afterwards? Can't create time_duration with milliseconds on VS.NET 2003

I am using VS.NET 2003 and attempting to create a time_duration using hours, minutes, seconds, and milliseconds. However, I get an error message regarding the 4th parameter (milliseconds). [serialization] Building in 1.32 for Borland problem

I downloaded the standalone Spirit 1.62 and put it in a directory of my machine. I set SPIRIT_ROOT to that directory in my environment. I then used bjam to build my Boost libraries for Borland and Bcb6. The serialization build reports errors from the spirit/core/config.hpp in my Boost 1.32 directory tree that my compiler is not supported. Of course I was expecting it to pick up Spirit files from my SPIRIT_ROOT directory tree. Why is this not working correctly ?

regex with multi-byte characters

Hello all, I am using wide characters from the Xerces-C library. These are defined as always being a 2 bytes characters by: typedef short XMLCh; // can be also defined through the #define preprocessor directive I don't remember it I also saw a post http://lists.boost.org/boost-users/2003/09/5095.php where John answered that it is better to convert these character sequences on-the-fly to char. Somehow I don't like this approach, since I believe that with wrong encoding set on the system some information might get lost. Is it possible to use XMLCh as character traits in the regular expression if XMLCh* points to a null-terminated 2 bytes character sequence? -- With Kind Regards, Ovanes

Building Boost question

The documentation for building Boost states that one can use 'install', 'stage', or nothing on the bjam command line. But it does not explain the difference between these options other than: "none Only builds the Boost libraries. This lets you do the first part of what the install action normally does without copying the built libraries to the install location. install Builds and installs Boost libraries and headers. stage Builds the Boost libraries and copies them into a common directory." This tells me almost nothing. In the 'none' explanation, what does "copying the built libraries to the install location" mean when the install location is never specified ? In the 'install' explanation, what does "installs Boost libraries and headers" mean and why do headers need to be installed ? In the 'stage' explanation, what is the "common directory" to which Boost libraries are copied ? In general where exactly are resulting libraries put for each of these options and are header files moved anywhere also ?

I have the following requirements. One TCP socket - R&W ("event driven": R & W request arrivals not predictable) - threadsafe. If it's of any help, readS update the local state machine in response to events external to a "server". Events external to the local device are reported back to the server via writeS. Communication in both directions is in the form of discrete "messages". OS is, let's say, Linux. An IOStream wrapper would be nice. On the other hand, I must have fairly low level control over the socket (specify interface(s) used, set various SO_*, etc.) It just doesn't seem that I should be required to roll my own to provide what appears to me to be a fairly basic set of requirements. On the other hand, I haven't seen anything on Boost that provides the features I'm looking for. It looks like the closest would be the new iostreams library *after* Jonathan Turkanis adds socket support to Boost version 1.34. Is that pretty much it? boost::array MSVC 7.1 /GL bug

Hi, I just discovered a bug when using boost::array with MSVC 7.1. I have project with about 100 cpp files and 20.000 lines of code. It uses about a dozen different boost libraries. When I compile with the compiler option /GL (whole program optimization) then I get an internal compiler error. It is certainly a compiler bug. The option /GL is a somewhat experimental feature. The boost::array source code contains a templatized assignment operator with type conversion. If I add a regular assignment operator, then the code compiles. In fact, I get a clean /W4 build :-) I have tried to reproduce the bug in a smaller example, but with no success. Smaller projects compile just fine. beginner question about boost Unit test framework

I am using Boost 1.31 with VC 6.0. I am testing the simplest example provided in the boost document. It seems "boost::unit_test" is not a valid namespace. After I change it to "boost::unit_test_framwork", it can compile but can not link, the error I got is "LINK : fatal error LNK1561: entry point must be defined". Serilization : Using serialization with socket++ for serializing objects over TCP connections : Problem

Hi All, I using boost::archive and socket++ libraries for serializing objects over TCP connections. Socket++ provides iosockinet class which is a derivative of iostream that supports i/o with two different buffers. Upon binding the iosockinet to a port I assign it to binary_iarchive and oarchive upon doing so .. the program aborts immediately. I am not sure what is causing this problem. W/o this the release binaries do not get build if one uses the procedure outlines there. Error building date_time and ICE with multi_index

Hi All! I'm currently starting to use more of boost, including libs that need compiling. Namely date_time. I first of all have to thank you for creating boost. It really boosts c++ development so much. And it is amazing what can be done with c++ templates. I'm having problems linking the date_time lib. I'm using the vc-7_1-stlport config. In the debug build everything is fine. But no libs are build for release mode. At least there are none w/o the g in their name in the stage/lib folder. The pragma comment lib stuff complains when building my program about not being able to find libboost_date_time-vc71-mt-p-1_32.lib. And indeed, it is not there. I have another issue with VC 7.1 with the multi_index lib. If I use it in conjunction with a smart_ptr it gives me an ICE. Does anybody know if that's a known bug of VC? Fixed in 8.0? Hi! maybe s.th. can be told from the bjam output while building dsate_time. I've attached the output to my previous post. Does it look the some as yours? Or are significant differences that might somehow indicate why I don't have the release mode libs. I've not seen any obvious error messages in there, though.
