When I lint my code, using boost 1-32, using PC-Lint I get some issues on the Boost code. I use 'PC-lint for C/C++ (NT) Vers. 8.00r, Copyright Gimpel Software 1985-2005' so the new patch that should deal with Boost better. Robert, In using xml_archive_exception, I find that I need to #include <boost/archive/basic_xml_archive.hpp>. This required searching through the boost directory since the documentation does not mention this requirement. The only mention in the docs is to #include <boost/archive/archive_exception.hpp>, which is insufficient. [Serialization] 1.33 RC1 nvp.hpp gotcha

I have found that the requirement that no serialization headers can be included before any archive headers means that you have to be careful which serialization headers you include in your class headers and indeed in what order you include them. In particular if you include serialization/nvp.hpp before serialization/vector.hpp and you use that class in another module that does not use archiving at all then that module will hit the error directive, example below. I guess what I would like is some guidance on using serialization as it's become a bit more tricky in my experience. At least you can't willy-nilly include serialization headers in any order in any headers and expect the application to compile. Perhaps it only worked by luck before! Auto unit test suite hangs due to locked mutex

I have searched the net for some indication of what I might be dealing with but have come up empty. This is on a Fedora Core 2 system running GCC 3.3.3. Boost was installed via RPM: # rpm -q boost boost-1.32.0-3.1.2 # I have a reasonably small auto unit test suite via Boost with 48 small discrete tests. It has been running fine previously. There are no tests that are known to invoke mutexes, Boost or otherwise. When we previously built Boost manually, this was not an issue; we'… [View More]re now trying to use the standard RPMs to make distribution/release building simpler. There is possibly an issue in how we're linking to libraries in our automake since those had to be changed to use the RPM installed libraries rather than our previously home-built ones. However, the make (compile, link, etc.) throws no errors, etc., and so we have no indication other than this hang that this is indeed where the problem lies. I had these make files, etc. working fine on a similarily installed system that instead ran FC4 with gcc 4.0.1 and Boost was installed as an RPM but at boost-1.32.0-6. When I copied to the FC2 system and set it up, I now see the issue. The lone symptom is that the test suite seems to complete but then hangs afterwards, apparently deadlocked on a mutex. Caleb Thanks for your answer. I tried running the following program with valgrind but as you said valgrind doesn't complain and I was unable to crash it. Without valgrind sometimes it works fine, sometimes it crashes.... I tested it on 4 different machines. On all of them I had crashes. So I doubt the memory is at fault. Hi, I'm using boost::logic::tribool for expressing logical flags that may be nulls by their nature (patient not asked, he/she doesn't know etc.). Default initialization to 'false' seems to be quite unnatural in this context and initialization to 'undetermined' seems to be prefered. I can't try it on VC7.1 today, though I will tomorrow, however I can't see anything compiler specific about it: Serialization/nvp.hpp includes serialization/traits.hpp that defines BOOST_SERIALIZATION_TRAITS_HPP. Serialization/vector.hpp includes collections_save_imp.hpp that includes archive/basic_archive.hpp that checks for BOOST_SERIALIZATION_TRAITS_HPP being defined and thereby says #error. boost::iostreams - user defined format flags

I'm trying to use the boost::iostreams library but I've run in to a problem that makes that difficult. The basis is that I want to write manipulators to manipulate the behavior of the filters in a filtering iostream. The standard mechanism for such manipulators are user defined format flags for streams, accessed via xalloc() and iword()/pword(). These are not available in a filter. It is also not feasible to store the formatting state in the filters, as there are not accessible from the … [View More]filtering stream (and hence inaccessible to the manipulators). I exchanged an e-mail with the author in which he states that a forthcoming version of boost::iostreams will provide access to the filters from the stream object. Manipulators could then reach in to the filter objects and modify them to adjust formatting behavior. However, while this is desirable for other reasons, I'd prefer to be able to use iword/pword from the filters, i.e. be able to call these methods on the Sources and Sinks (which, presumably, would forward them to the actual stream). It seems more "standard" to me, although one could argue for storing state directly in the filters from a clean design point of view. Does anyone else have an opinion on this? Or have a suggestion for an alternate method of creating manipulators to adjust the behavior of the filters using stream local state? I searched around for previous discussion of this issue but didn't find one. If there was, a pointer to it would be much appreciated. P.S. For those interested, the details of what I want follow. I'm doing some work with XML which involves user input. Because one never knows what a user might put in his data, I need to encode/decode problematic characters such as angle brackets. The problem with having streams to do the encode/decode is that one doesn't always want this performed on the data. For instance, during output one needs to send literal angle brackets around the element tags and I don't want to get in to trying to second guess the encoder to work around it. The solution I decided to implement is to have manipulators that turn the coding on and off, so one would do something like this: xml::coding::ostream s; s << "<tag>" << xml::coding::on << node.content() << xml::coding::off << "</tag>"; This allows low level code fine grained control over what gets coded while leaving the details up to the stream provided by the application. The hassle of setting up strings for in place conversions is also avoid, along with the problem of making sure every body is using the same coding algorithms. However, it doesn't help all that much on input as a parser has to read from a non-filtered stream to correctly detect the tags. Element content will end up in a string and it's no easier to use a filtering stream on that than to just call a decode function. [View Less]

I was really shocked when a bcp shared_ptr foo/ copied 274 files. I expected a lot, but not that many. Then I read the doc's more closely and it says that if you depend on any header from a lib, you get the whole lib. Thanks for your response on this. I have tried moving the void_cast_register to the derived class constructor (without success) and I have looked further in to my use case. This was probably brought about by me removing the archive and serialization headers from the precompiled header file that Borland uses because there were other compilation problems in keeping them in. The use case is as follows: Classes A and B are derived from class Z. Class M has a pointer to class Z as member data. … [View More]This member data is set to a pointer to an instance of A or B as appropriate. Class S serializes M. Class S includes the Archive headers as it creates the archive class instance. S includes the headers for M that includes the headers for Z. However S does not include the headers for A or B, because it does not need to, and in fact does not need to know of the existence of A or B as they are used polymorphically. In our case S does not use A/B/Z but others use them via M. I have a free function called RegisterTypes in a module that has BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT(A) and void_cast_register<A,Z>(0,0) in it. It's run once at application start. Which means that A.hpp is never included in a compilation unit with any archive header and therefore the void_cast_register function is not generated (as I understand it). I realise that serializing classes via a pointer to the base class and void_cast_register<T> is a seldom used corner of serialization. I can fix the problem by including archive headers where RegisterTypes is defined even though they may not be needed, and then the application links ok. I'm not sure if there is a need for a change, you are best to judge. I hope this explains my use-case. I just happened to open Konqueror to the root of a recent boost CVS, and discovered an HTML file with some information I've never seen before. Among that information was a link to the Boost.Iostreams library. I don't see any reference to it on the Boost homepage, and when I searched the site I didn't find much there. But I've found it elsewhere on the Internet. I'm confused as to the status of the library. Is it a continuing project? I sure hope so. -- Regards, Steven

Dear Boost Spirit experts, I've been using Spirit for a few weeks and it is one of the most impressive things I've seen for a long time. Thanks to everyone who has made this possible. Its main problem, as far as I can see, is that the error messages are almost entirely incomprehensible. This is not unusual for C++; the compiler (gcc in my case) has a share of the blame too. Anyway, I am trying to write a parser that will: - Use a file_iterator to parse a file. - Skip comments using #-to-end-of-line syntax. - Skip whitespace. - Recognise a simple language. I can do the main part of the parser (the language); the problem is with the comment skipper. I think that using file_iterator might be making it more complicated, though I have also failed to get a char* version to compile. I'm getting a compile error with my code to do with the boost::is_abstract class for compilers that don't support type_traits/is_abstract, i.e. those that have BOOST_NO_IS_ABSTRACT defined, BCB 5.6.4 in my case. Serialization/is_abstract.hpp defines an is_abstract class if BOOST_NO_IS_ABSTRACT is defined rather than including type_traits/is_abstract.hpp. With 1.33 RC1 type_traits/is_abstract.hpp now defines an is_abstract class if BOOST_NO_IS_ABSTRACT is defined, which it didn't use to do. … [View More]

Mac OSX 10.4, Carbon.h, boost::shared_ptr, and BOOST_HAS_PTHREADS

Hi all, I am writing all of this down because I was only able to find cryptic references to this problem in the Boost archives, and in the Apple Xcode-Users archives. I also want to ask whether my solution to the problem makes sense. I am developing a cross platform static library on OSX 10.4.2 using Xcode 2.1. The Xcode IDE includes a mechanism for unit testing that I am using. The unit test target is setup by Xcode, and one of the things it does is to include Carbon.h as a "prefix … [View More]include". This means that the compiler command line includes "-include <path>/Carbon.h" and this header file is read BEFORE anything else. Everything had been going great until I wrote a test using boost::shared_ptr. I began to see all sorts of strange behaviors. After a while I turned on Guard Malloc in the debugger. That was when it started catching bad access errors in pthread_mutex_init, which was being called as a result of creating a boost:shared_ptr. It turns out that in the constructor for: template<class P, class D> shared_count(P p, D d) it executes this: pi_ = new sp_counted_base_impl<P, D>(p, d); Class sp_counted_base_impl is derived from sp_counted_base, and sp_counted_base has a data member declared as: #if defined(BOOST_HAS_THREADS) || defined(BOOST_LWM_WIN32) mutable mutex_type mtx_; #endif In the constructor for sp_counted_base, the constructor for mutex_type (lightweight_mutex) was being called. It in turn called pthread_mutex_init, passing the address of its mutex member, which is a 44 byte buffer. The memory access problem, though, is that when operator new called malloc, it did so as if sp_counted_base did NOT contain the mutex data member. This means that the 44 byte buffer wasn't allocated, and because Guard Malloc is very clever, the access outside of the allocated space was caught. I searched around and found messages where people said they saw problems like this because the Carbon headers were included before the Boost headers. This certainly fit my situation. I managed to change the order of header inclusion and everything started working. The class memory was allocated including space for mtx_ and the mutex init worked. This is really a lousy solution, though, so I kept poking around. I put things back so that Carbon.h was included on the command line, and assumed I would need to live with that. I added -DBOOST_HAS_THREADS to my compiler flags. The test still failed because the mutex memory had not been allocated. Because of this, I looked for anywhere where BOOST_HAS_THREADS could be #undef-ed. I found two possibilities, both in boost/config/suffix.hpp. It appeared that in my case BOOST_HAS_PTHREADS was not defined. This led me to boost/config/macos.hpp. I found this little code snippet: // // BSD runtime has pthreads, sigaction, sched_yield and gettimeofday, // of these only pthreads are advertised in <unistd.h>, so set the // other options explicitly: // # define BOOST_HAS_SCHED_YIELD # define BOOST_HAS_GETTIMEOFDAY # define BOOST_HAS_SIGACTION I tried including <unistd.h> ahead of shared_ptr.hpp, but that still failed the same way. I edited macos.hpp and added a fourth #define to this section: # define BOOST_HAS_PTHREADS When I built with the modified header, everything worked as expected. The mutex space was allocated. I don't want to change the Boost headers, though, so undid the change to macos.hpp. I went back to my test target in Xcode and changed the compiler flag -DBOOST_HAS_THREADS to -DBOOST_HAS_PTHREADS. I rebuilt my test code and everything works perfectly. So it *appears* that defining BOOST_HAS_PTHREADS on the compiler command line is the general case solution for this problem, but I'm looking for opinions more expert than mine. If this is indeed true, then does anyone know why the macro isn't just defined in boost/config/platform/macos.hpp? Have I opened myself up to other problems by doing this? My application that works with 1.32 is failing to link with 1.33 RC1 due to boost::serialization::void_cast_register (specialised for my classes) being an unresolved external. In my case the void_cast_register call and the BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT macro are in one module while the serialization is done in another module, with all modules linked in one application.
