Hi I'm trying to use the program_options header to satisfy my command line needs, and I have have run into the following quirk with boost version 1.32 and microsoft visual c++ 7.1 when trying to use 'cout<<' to output the program_options::options_description. Appartently there is a limit to the length of the program option name. When not specifying short optoins names, the option name seems to be limited to 12 characters. greater than this and I get a debug assertion failure in dbgheap.c line 1132 expression: _CrtIsValidHeapPointer(pUserData) . When specifying a short option name, the limit for the full name seems to be 6 characters. More than this results in a debug assertion falure in debug mode (msvc++ 7.1, file dbgdel.cpp, line 52) _BLOCK_TYPE_IS_VALID(pHead->nBlockUse). Is there something I can do to to fix this or work around the problem (besides restricting the length of my option names)? Is this a compiler specific problem? Prombles compiling 1.33 RC1 with Intel C++ 8.1 on Windows XP

BlankI'm having problems compiling signals library 1.33 RC1 with Intel C++ 8.1. Looks like it only happens when building dll version of signals library. Eveything else compiles fine. It also compiles with VC7.1. I have set the following environment variables: set TOOLS=intel-win32-8_1 set INTEL_BASE_MSVC_TOOLSET=vc-7_1 set INTEL_PATH="c:\Program Files\Intel\CPP\Compiler80\Ia32" set INTEL_VERSION=8.1 The command line I use is bjam "--builddir=D:\Boost_Build\1_33_0" stage. tribool question

Hi, I'm using boost::logic::tribool for expressing logical flags that may be nulls by their nature (patient not asked, he/she doesn't know etc.). Default initialization to 'false' seems to be quite unnatural in this context and initialization to 'undetermined' seems to be prefered. Is any significant reason for boost::logic::tribool default constructor initializing the value to 'false'? TIA -- Serge

shared_ptr conundrum

We have been using shared_ptrs pretty successfully throughout our application, but I have run across something that has just completely stumped me. BTW - this is a Windows .NET 2003 + Intel 8.1 compiler compiling in Debug mode on a multi-processor machine (dual Xeon Dell workstation). The code in question is: void Router::routeEnvelope(shared_ptr<Envelope> envelope) { if(!running || !envelope) return; GUID target = envelope->getTo(); if(target == guid) { // PATH 1 // check to see if it is a failure envelope shared_ptr<EnvelopeFailure> envelopeFailure = shared_dynamic_cast<EnvelopeFailure>(envelope); if(envelopeFailure) { // there was a problem sending the original envelope failedEnvelope(envelopeFailure->getFrom()); } // pass it on up the stack envelopeController.injectEnvelope(envelope); } else { // PATH 2 mutex::scoped_lock lock(envelopeQueueMonitor); envelopeQueue.push(envelope); envelopeReady.notify_all(); } } The first envelope that comes in has a guid that matches target, so it takes code path 1. If I comment out both code path 1 and code path 2, the envelope is released properly, and I can see its destructor get called. Here is where it gets strange--if I uncomment anything in code path 2, and only code path 2, I no longer see the envelope get released, even though that code path is not executed at all. I've been doing this testing on an SMP machine. On a UP machine, the program runs fine without any issues. I am at a complete loss. The original envelope object is created in the function that calls this function, and as far as I can tell , is not touched by any other thread in the application. Thanks for any advice. Cheers, tim

Hi there, seems the attention span for my last question is over. ;-) I also think that my subject was misleading. My question isn't about terminating, completing, or canceling a thread. It's about putting a thread in a blocked state. Please consider the following code. All functions, except for the run(), are called by the GUI thread. logical_and, boost::bind, and boost::function

I'm trying to use boost::bind and boost::function with std::logical_not and I've run into some strange template magic that I don't understand. In the example below, I use boost::function to help compose several boost::bind calls so that I don't have to do it all on one line (I find that this improves readability). The problem is that when I do this, the functions that are bound with boost::bind never get called. They will get called only if I construct everything on one line. (???) Is this expected behavior? If so, why does it work like this? I am a bit baffled why you can get the example to compile! I can't try it on VC7.1 today, though I will tomorrow, however I can't see anything compiler specific about it: Serialization/nvp.hpp includes serialization/traits.hpp that defines BOOST_SERIALIZATION_TRAITS_HPP. Serialization/vector.hpp includes collections_save_imp.hpp that includes archive/basic_archive.hpp that checks for BOOST_SERIALIZATION_TRAITS_HPP being defined and thereby says #error. Therefore it appears that whenever vector.hpp is included after nvp.hpp that basic_archive will choke. BTW When I said that perhaps it only worked by luck before I meant that my application worked by luck as I was not overly careful about header inclusion order or what went in the precompiled headers and what didn't. I did _not_ mean that it's lucky the serialization library works! I have found it very simple to use and very powerful. [Thread] How to wait for a thread until it stopped

Hi there, I'm still working on the transistion from an old thread lib to the boost thread lib. I have two threads, the GUI thread and a worker thread. The worker thread is always inside a loop that only breaks if someone set the flag. The GUI thread has from time to time to stop the worker thread. This is currently done by setting a flag ( _bStop ) and the worker thread will eventually stop like: void run() { boost::mutex::scoped_lock oLock( _oRunMutex ); do { ... if( _bStop ) _oRunCondition.wait( oLock ); } while( _bTerminate == false ); } I believe that this implemention can lead to deadlocks. But how can I implement the behavior that the GUI thread will break until the worker thread has stopped. Thanks, Christian

(Note: The following contribution is essentially a copy of a former one, which was, due to several administrative problems on my side, probably overlooked by the majority of concerned programers) Dear Boosters, its quite a while that I could participate in this newsgroup, so maybe my request is ol' stuff and has been answered 100 times. In case of that I apologize for the following question: I observe that boost::tuple::length in version 1.32+1.33RC2 exist two template specializations for empty tuples, namely template<> struct length<tuple<> > { BOOST_STATIC_CONSTANT(int, value = 0); }; template<> struct length<null_type> { BOOST_STATIC_CONSTANT(int, value = 0); }; which lead to the unexpected effect that e.g. typedef const tuple<> ConstEmptyTuple; int k = length<ConstEmptyTuple>::value; (modulo namespace issues) does not compile. The reason is obvious, because deduction of boost::tuples::length<ConstEmptyTuple> extracts "const tuple<>", which leads to the generic template definition: template<class T> struct length { BOOST_STATIC_CONSTANT(int, value = 1 + length<typename T::tail_type>::value); }; which does not compile in this case, because const oost::tuples::tuple<> has no tail_type. Similar situations arise for const null_type arguments and corresponding volatile variants thereof. To my humble opinion tuples::length should work independent of cv qualification of the template arguments, but this route should of course be gone in accordance to similar situations of "template predicates" in boost::mp/type_traits. One further indirection and usage of boost::remove_cv<T> could simply resolve the described problem, such as: // Define length_impl + 2 specialisation for tuple<> and null_type as // currently done for length namespace details { template <typename T> struct length_impl { .. // as before; }; template <> struct length_impl<null_type> { .. // as before; }; template <> struct length_impl<tuple<null_type, ...> > { .. // as before; }; } // One single - not specialized - length template handling all cases: template <typename T> struct length { static const int value = details::length_impl< typename ::boost::remove_cv<T>::type >::value; }; What do you think? I need to append my comments with a very import observation I just made regarding the shared_ptr issue I am having. I just copied over the binary created on my SMP machine to my UP machine, and it is showing the same problem with releasing the underlying shared pointer resource. I had been compiling the full code on both machines (including the boost threading library dll), and comparing those results, and not actually comparing the results of the same binary. The two machines are: Dell Precision 450 Workstation Dual 2.4Ghz Xeon Processors Windows XP SP2 Visual Studio 2003 Intel 8.1.??? Home Build Single AMD Athlon-64 3200+ Windows XP SP2 Visual Studio 2003 Intel 8.1.025 I just realized I don't know the exact rev of Intel I have on my machine at work, but will check it in the morning. I know it is at least 8.1.019. I seem to be looking at a problem with either SMP vs. UP builds or minor revision changes in the Intel compiler. 8.1.025 being the known working version in this case. Also, I've gotten the same results with 1.32 and 1.33 RC2. Also, thanks for a great library. We have been using it pretty extensively throughout our app; including threading, shared_ptr, spirit, date_time, bind, filesystem and multi_index (there may even be more that I can't think of right now). boost has been great fun to work with. hash function for edge_descriptor

Hello there, I was trying to create hash_maps with vertex_descriptors and edge_descriptors. The first one was easy with vertex_descriptors being just void*'s, and there is even an example in the boost detail namespace (although it's not activated using gcc): template <> struct hash< void* > { std::size_t operator()(void* v) const { return (std::size_t)v; } } But the edge_descriptors give me some serious headache. How could I create a hash function for them? Is using the source and target a good idea in graphs where there could easily be more than one edge between two vertices? hi to all, I'm trying to implementing a string class as a std::list of elements that can be common char, wchar_t or something else (as utf-16 chars, for example). In order to obtain this, I've defined a collection as a template class, and used with different value_type(s). With boost_1_32_0, i want to find connected components of a filtered graph. What is an appropriate second argument of algorithm, connected_components, which is applied to a filtered graph? On the Boost-users mailing list membership configuration page, there is an option to filter the messages by topic categories, but it says "no topics defined" and has no obvious place to click, so I can't figure out how to use this option.

[Serialization] 1.33 RC1 unexpected header dependency?

I'm finding an apparent dependency between some non-serialization headers and the use of BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT. If boost/optional.hpp or boost/format.hpp or boost/bind.hpp are included before BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT is used then I get the compilation error: [C++ Error] export.hpp(210): E2102 Cannot use template 'boost::type<T>' without specifying specialization parameters [C++ Error] export.hpp(210): E2293 ) expected If they are included after then everything's ok. This is BCB 5.6.4. This precludes me having optional/bind/format in a precompiled header and also means it's a bit tricky ensuring the correct inclusion order for a large project. gcc 3.4.4 ded_typename test failure

I'm stumped as to why the following is happening with GCC 3.4.4 on the AmigaOS PPC platform with Boost 1.32.0: no_ded_typename_pass (passed) no_ded_typename_fail (failed) All the other config tests pass except for non_ded_typename_fail which always compiles. I'm wondering - does multi_index satisfy the same iterator validity constraints as the standard associative containers, i.e: The insert members shall not affect the validity of iterators and references to the container, and the erase members shall invalidate only iterators and references to the erased elements. [serialization] serializing dynamic arrays

Does anyone have an idea how to serialize dynamic arrays of objects? An example follows at the end. Its weakness shows up when an outside pointer points to an element in the array. The problem is that the type being serialized is T but not T*. boost::iostreams - user defined format flags

I'm trying to use the boost::iostreams library but I've run in to a problem that makes that difficult. The basis is that I want to write manipulators to manipulate the behavior of the filters in a filtering iostream. The standard mechanism for such manipulators are user defined format flags for streams, accessed via xalloc() and iword()/pword(). These are not available in a filter. It is also not feasible to store the formatting state in the filters, as there are not accessible from the filtering stream (and hence inaccessible to the manipulators). I exchanged an e-mail with the author in which he states that a forthcoming version of boost::iostreams will provide access to the filters from the stream object. Manipulators could then reach in to the filter objects and modify them to adjust formatting behavior. However, while this is desirable for other reasons, I'd prefer to be able to use iword/pword from the filters, i.e. be able to call these methods on the Sources and Sinks (which, presumably, would forward them to the actual stream). It seems more "standard" to me, although one could argue for storing state directly in the filters from a clean design point of view. Does anyone else have an opinion on this? Or have a suggestion for an alternate method of creating manipulators to adjust the behavior of the filters using stream local state? I searched around for previous discussion of this issue but didn't find one. If there was, a pointer to it would be much appreciated. P.S. For those interested, the details of what I want follow. I'm doing some work with XML which involves user input. Because one never knows what a user might put in his data, I need to encode/decode problematic characters such as angle brackets. The problem with having streams to do the encode/decode is that one doesn't always want this performed on the data. For instance, during output one needs to send literal angle brackets around the element tags and I don't want to get in to trying to second guess the encoder to work around it. The solution I decided to implement is to have manipulators that turn the coding on and off, so one would do something like this: xml::coding::ostream s; s << "<tag>" << xml::coding::on << node.content() << xml::coding::off << "</tag>"; This allows low level code fine grained control over what gets coded while leaving the details up to the stream provided by the application. The hassle of setting up strings for in place conversions is also avoid, along with the problem of making sure every body is using the same coding algorithms. However, it doesn't help all that much on input as a parser has to read from a non-filtered stream to correctly detect the tags. Element content will end up in a string and it's no easier to use a filtering stream on that than to just call a decode function.

[bcp]minimal option

I was really shocked when a bcp shared_ptr foo/ copied 274 files. I expected a lot, but not that many. Then I read the doc's more closely and it says that if you depend on any header from a lib, you get the whole lib. Could it be possible to add a -minimal option to have only the actual headers used included? Thanks, Tom

Thanks for your response on this. I have tried moving the void_cast_register to the derived class constructor (without success) and I have looked further in to my use case. This was probably brought about by me removing the archive and serialization headers from the precompiled header file that Borland uses because there were other compilation problems in keeping them in. The use case is as follows: Classes A and B are derived from class Z. Class M has a pointer to class Z as member data. This member data is set to a pointer to an instance of A or B as appropriate. Class S serializes M. Class S includes the Archive headers as it creates the archive class instance. S includes the headers for M that includes the headers for Z. However S does not include the headers for A or B, because it does not need to, and in fact does not need to know of the existence of A or B as they are used polymorphically. In our case S does not use A/B/Z but others use them via M. I have a free function called RegisterTypes in a module that has BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT(A) and void_cast_register<A,Z>(0,0) in it. It's run once at application start. Which means that A.hpp is never included in a compilation unit with any archive header and therefore the void_cast_register function is not generated (as I understand it). I realise that serializing classes via a pointer to the base class and void_cast_register<T> is a seldom used corner of serialization. I can fix the problem by including archive headers where RegisterTypes is defined even though they may not be needed, and then the application links ok. I'm not sure if there is a need for a change, you are best to judge. I hope this explains my use-case. Even if you can attach a specific meaning for individual elements, most of the processing is still done either by iterating over the array or by accessing an element based on an index number extracted from incoming data. In general rogramming the occassions where you would be accessing the array by a constant index is still very rare compared to accessing the elements by a variable index. Even if you did have an application where almost all of the array accesses were with constant indexes, then you would also certainly create a set of constants so that you would, say, extract the state name from an array of address strings by saying [WYOMING] rather than [49]. You set the constants up once and you're done. No more array bounds access errors. Even if the initial set of constant definitions had an error, once fixed, it's fixed forever. Again, the number of places where checking array bounds on fixed length arrays is too small to justify work involved. Merrill

I just happened to open Konqueror to the root of a recent boost CVS, and discovered an HTML file with some information I've never seen before. Among that information was a link to the Boost.Iostreams library. I don't see any reference to it on the Boost homepage, and when I searched the site I didn't find much there. But I've found it elsewhere on the Internet. I'm confused as to the status of the library. Is it a continuing project? I sure hope so. -- Regards, Steven

Hello All, I have a question regarding integration of Boost library into a project which uses SCons build system. We'd like to build Boost as static-linkable library under MSVC7.1 for Win32, and make it dependable on compiler options which are set from root of the project in SCons configuration file - like /GL (link-time code generation), /Og (global optimization) etc. What is the most simple way to do this? If we simple link all libs/src/*.cpp files into single static library, will it work? Are there any #defines, project-specific include dirs, project-specific compiler options etc? concept_check question.

Hi, I am having trouble understanding why the following concept_check, which checks an inheritance relationship, doesn't work but the BOOST_STATIC_ASSERT does. Just to make sure that the concept does actually work, the LessThanComparableConcept was implemented and then commented out. 1.33 pointer to object serialization

Hi, I'm having trouble with serializing an object through a pointer to it. The code below works in 1.32, but in 1.33 it gives the errors below. I am using Mac OS X 10.4.2, gcc 4.0. I've had a look at the headers, but my template programming isn't good enough to make too much sense of them. It seems that there is a check to ensure T is not a pointer on line 549 of oserializer.hpp, which is the reason the static assert is failing? Is it correct that objects shouldn't be serializable by pointers to them, or not? Spirit parser - using a skip scanner and file_iterator

Dear Boost Spirit experts, I've been using Spirit for a few weeks and it is one of the most impressive things I've seen for a long time. Thanks to everyone who has made this possible. Its main problem, as far as I can see, is that the error messages are almost entirely incomprehensible. This is not unusual for C++; the compiler (gcc in my case) has a share of the blame too. The result, in my case, is not venturing much beyond the structures used in the examples from the (excellent) documentation, and debugging by trial and error. Anyway, I am trying to write a parser that will: - Use a file_iterator to parse a file. - Skip comments using #-to-end-of-line syntax. - Skip whitespace. - Recognise a simple language. I can do the main part of the parser (the language); the problem is with the comment skipper. I think that using file_iterator might be making it more complicated, though I have also failed to get a char* version to compile. Hi I have a simple program running on Linux. The program implements an Active Object and uses boost::object_pool and boost::thread It cores when sending lots of messages Here is the message I get when running gdb #0 0x0804b840 in boost::simple_segregated_storage<unsigned int>::ordered_free (this=0x988b4d0, chunk=0x988bf2c) at simple_segregated_storage.hpp:46 46 { return *(static_cast<void **>(ptr)); } There are 2 threads. I'm getting a compile error with my code to do with the boost::is_abstract class for compilers that don't support type_traits/is_abstract, i.e. those that have BOOST_NO_IS_ABSTRACT defined, BCB 5.6.4 in my case. Serialization/is_abstract.hpp defines an is_abstract class if BOOST_NO_IS_ABSTRACT is defined rather than including type_traits/is_abstract.hpp. With 1.33 RC1 type_traits/is_abstract.hpp now defines an is_abstract class if BOOST_NO_IS_ABSTRACT is defined, which it didn't use to do. Thus the class boost::is_abstract is multiply defined. Minimal code to reproduce the error is: #include <boost/type_traits.hpp> #include <boost/serialization/is_abstract.hpp> int main(int argc, char* argv[]) { return 0; } Compile that with BCB5.6.4 and you get: [C++ Error] is_abstract.hpp(32): E2238 Multiple declaration for 'is_abstract<T>' [C++ Error] is_abstract.hpp(130): E2344 Earlier declaration of 'is_abstract<T>' The first is serialization/is_abstract.hpp the second is type_traits/is_abstract.hpp. Perhaps serialization/is_abstract.hpp could check for type_traits/is_abstract.hpp having already been included or perhaps the serialization version is not now needed? Hello, I would like to do some topology modification, depending on bundled properties of the vertices. So i use: std::pair<vertex_iterator, vertex_iterator> vertices(const adjacency_list& g) to get an iterator range for all vertices, then i make a loop over all vertices, search for the properties, maybe i store the iterators of some vertices for later use, but the main problem is: I can not these iterators in functions like: std::pair<edge_descriptor, bool> add_edge(vertex_descriptor u, vertex_descriptor v, adjacency_list& g) void remove_vertex(vertex_descriptor u, adjacency_list& g) void clear_vertex(vertex_descriptor u, adjacency_list& g) and so on... [mpl] how to find out whether a function is implemented

I hope the MPL label is right. At least the question has *some* relevance to metaprogramming. Basically, I need to find out whether a certain function F over a certain type is defined, and if yes, take its address. Input: the type T, and function NAME F. Output: pointer to F if Ret F(T, T& or T const&; or two arguments) is defined, 0 otherwise. The function can return anything, including void. Variations in input: - the function may take T, T&, or T const& - if possible, the method should work for user-defined operators (my C++ is a bit rusty in this area - is it at all possible to take an address of an overloaded operator?) I guess the F would then be named, e.g. 'operator<' ? If the general case is hard to work out, it's OK to have the solution just for Ret F(T const&) and Ret F(T const&, T const&). (OK, this is my third try. I got problems with (re)subscriptions **although** I am subscribed since years...) Dear Boosters, its quite a while that I could participate in this newsgroup, so maybe my request is ol' stuff and has been answered 100 times. In case of that I apologize for the following question: I observe that boost::tuple::length in version 1.32 exist two template specializations for empty tuples, namely template<> struct length<tuple<> > { BOOST_STATIC_CONSTANT(int, value = 0); }; template<> struct length<null_type> { BOOST_STATIC_CONSTANT(int, value = 0); }; which lead to the unexpected effect that e.g. typedef const tuple<> ConstEmptyTuple; int k = length<ConstEmptyTuple>::value; (modulo namespace issues) does not compile. The reason is obvious, because deduction of boost::tuples::length<ConstEmptyTuple> extracts "const tuple<>", which leads to the generic template definition: template<class T> struct length { BOOST_STATIC_CONSTANT(int, value = 1 + length<typename T::tail_type>::value); }; which does not compile in this case, because const oost::tuples::tuple<> has no tail_type. Similar situations arise for const null_type arguments and corresponding volatile variants thereof. To my humble opinion tuples::length should work independent of cv qualification of the template arguments, but this route should of course be gone in accordance to similar situations of "template predicates" in boost::mp/type_traits. One further indirection and usage of boost::remove_cv<T> could simply resolve the described problem, such as: // Define length_impl + 2 specialisation for tuple<> and null_type as // currently done for length namespace details { template <typename T> struct length_impl { .. // as before; }; template <> struct length_impl<null_type> { .. // as before; }; template <> struct length_impl<tuple<null_type, ...> > { .. // as before; }; } // One single - not specialized - length template handling all cases: template <typename T> struct length { static const int value = details::length_impl< typename ::boost::remove_cv<T>::type >::value; }; What do you think? Hi Robert! thanks for the reply. I've to agree with you that my solution to problem was an ugly hack. It certainly is very inefficient and not exception safe. Furthermore it requires T::operator=. I took a look at the file you mentioned. But unfortunately I lack the knowledge of boost internals and, more important, I'm unfamiliar with the highly advanced c++ stuff, like inplace new or however the collection stuff is done. Therefore I, unfortunately, cannot suggest a better solution. I guess I've to bear with that performance hit, for now. Hi Rene/Peter, I'm happy to report that 1.33rc1 solves the EXC_BAD_ACCESS problem I was having on Mac OS X and does not require me to ensure that boost/config.hpp is included prior to any Carbon includes. Misc. comments on the build: (i) There are a lot of warnings re. "use of `long double' type; its size may change in a future release". May I suggest either fixing the problem or disabling the warning for gcc using the -Wno-long-double. Personally I dislike seeing any warnings come up as a user of boost or any other library. As a user, I'm only really interested in errors. Perhaps there should be a "developer" build option that shows warnings which is not the default. (ii) The following was reported duing my build (I'm installing alongside 1.32) - is this ok? ...failed updating 22 targets... ...skipped 26 targets... ...updated 4318 targets... I'll continue using 1.33rc1 to see if anything else comes up. Thanks for a great library and please let me know if there is anything else I can do for you guys. Let's say I've got some mpl::vector. If I grab a begin iterator on it, and increment that iterator past the elements in the vector, what happens? Mac OSX 10.4, Carbon.h, boost::shared_ptr, and BOOST_HAS_PTHREADS

Hi all, I am writing all of this down because I was only able to find cryptic references to this problem in the Boost archives, and in the Apple Xcode-Users archives. I also want to ask whether my solution to the problem makes sense. I am developing a cross platform static library on OSX 10.4.2 using Xcode 2.1. The Xcode IDE includes a mechanism for unit testing that I am using. The unit test target is setup by Xcode, and one of the things it does is to include Carbon.h as a "prefix include". This means that the compiler command line includes "-include <path>/Carbon.h" and this header file is read BEFORE anything else. Everything had been going great until I wrote a test using boost::shared_ptr. I began to see all sorts of strange behaviors. After a while I turned on Guard Malloc in the debugger. That was when it started catching bad access errors in pthread_mutex_init, which was being called as a result of creating a boost:shared_ptr. It turns out that in the constructor for: template<class P, class D> shared_count(P p, D d) it executes this: pi_ = new sp_counted_base_impl<P, D>(p, d); Class sp_counted_base_impl is derived from sp_counted_base, and sp_counted_base has a data member declared as: #if defined(BOOST_HAS_THREADS) || defined(BOOST_LWM_WIN32) mutable mutex_type mtx_; #endif In the constructor for sp_counted_base, the constructor for mutex_type (lightweight_mutex) was being called. It in turn called pthread_mutex_init, passing the address of its mutex member, which is a 44 byte buffer. The memory access problem, though, is that when operator new called malloc, it did so as if sp_counted_base did NOT contain the mutex data member. This means that the 44 byte buffer wasn't allocated, and because Guard Malloc is very clever, the access outside of the allocated space was caught. I searched around and found messages where people said they saw problems like this because the Carbon headers were included before the Boost headers. This certainly fit my situation. I managed to change the order of header inclusion and everything started working. The class memory was allocated including space for mtx_ and the mutex init worked. This is really a lousy solution, though, so I kept poking around. I put things back so that Carbon.h was included on the command line, and assumed I would need to live with that. I added -DBOOST_HAS_THREADS to my compiler flags. The test still failed because the mutex memory had not been allocated. Because of this, I looked for anywhere where BOOST_HAS_THREADS could be #undef-ed. I found two possibilities, both in boost/config/suffix.hpp. It appeared that in my case BOOST_HAS_PTHREADS was not defined. This led me to boost/config/macos.hpp. I found this little code snippet: // // BSD runtime has pthreads, sigaction, sched_yield and gettimeofday, // of these only pthreads are advertised in <unistd.h>, so set the // other options explicitly: // # define BOOST_HAS_SCHED_YIELD # define BOOST_HAS_GETTIMEOFDAY # define BOOST_HAS_SIGACTION I tried including <unistd.h> ahead of shared_ptr.hpp, but that still failed the same way. I edited macos.hpp and added a fourth #define to this section: # define BOOST_HAS_PTHREADS When I built with the modified header, everything worked as expected. The mutex space was allocated. I don't want to change the Boost headers, though, so undid the change to macos.hpp. I went back to my test target in Xcode and changed the compiler flag -DBOOST_HAS_THREADS to -DBOOST_HAS_PTHREADS. I rebuilt my test code and everything works perfectly. So it *appears* that defining BOOST_HAS_PTHREADS on the compiler command line is the general case solution for this problem, but I'm looking for opinions more expert than mine. If this is indeed true, then does anyone know why the macro isn't just defined in boost/config/platform/macos.hpp? Have I opened myself up to other problems by doing this? [Serialization] 1.33 RC1 Problem linking void_cast_register

My application that works with 1.32 is failing to link with 1.33 RC1 due to boost::serialization::void_cast_register (specialised for my classes) being an unresolved external. In my case the void_cast_register call and the BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT macro are in one module while the serialization is done in another module, with all modules linked in one application. The code below also shows this problem, however if I add an archive class and header to the example then it will compile and link ok. Obviously this is when serialization is in the same module as the void_cast_register call. Any suggestions about what I need to add to make the application link? Boost.Spirit question

I've having a hard time getting my parser to work correctly. I'm trying to create a script parser to create tests, actions, and groups defined in a file. I have the grammer working except for one small issue. I can't get rid of the closing quote on my sentence. It skips the first one just fine. program options config file format?

Hi, the program_options reference talks about being able to parse config files, but doesn't mention a thing about its layout. Hi, I'm a newbie so please be forbearing when I have made wrong assumptions. I have attached two simple test programs simple.cc and simple1.cc to illustrate the (presumable) bugs. I currently use VC 7.1 and Boost 1.32.0 on WinXP. The access violation in simple.cc (when built with NDEBUG) occurs when I try to emit a signal without slots. Documentation seems to state that in this case the return value of the emission is undefined, which seems to imply that the actual call should work (which it should anyway, IMHO). When I compile with _DEBUG defined I get the following assertion thrown at me: <assertion> Assertion failed: first != last, file boost/boost/last_value.hpp, line 23 </assertion> simple1.cc shows a very basic slot leakage, you will see 9 constructor calls but only 8 destructor calls for the handler. This could be caused by having pos.impl_->group->second.erase(pos.impl_->slot_); commented out in named_slot_map.cpp:230. The half bug I mentioned in the subject is the one which I am least sure about. simple1.cc shows that my callback functor is copied eight times during connect (that obviously implies seven destructor calls). Hi, although not directly boost related, I think the needed expertise is certainly here and the answer to my question might be of common interest. Can someone point me to information resources about differences in handling (removal of duplicated class instantiations, name resolution rules for identifiers in template definitions etc.) of and compiler/linker performance regarding templates? I'm mainly interested in gcc and vc7; I've already read the discussion about frepos in the gcc manual but found nothing about vc7. For both of them but also for other tool chains I would be happy about further and more detailed resources. Actually, I haven't really used it at all yet. :-) But I've managed to get it installed on Mac OS X 10.4 and usable with Boost.Build v2 and I thought I'd share my experiences in case it's of any use to others. optional + serialize

Hi Jeff, All! thanks a lot for the reply. I assume the bug fix is in 1.33? I'm still having issues with boost.optinal and boost.serialize working together (in 1.32). Is for deserialization of boost::optional<T> T required to have default ctor?. This prevents boost::optional<boost::posix_time::time_period> from being serialized. The extraction code fails to compile. I would an ugly way around this (please see my last email). Does anybody have ideas for better solutions? I've attached a modified version of #include <boost/serialization/optional.hpp> to this email, that contains code changes to make to work with types w/o T having a default ctor. I have been trying to use Boost Date_Time library with my code. I used boostjam to compile the source; the command used was: bjam -s"TOOLS=vc-7_1" --with-date_time install. The following libraries were built (among others): boost_date_time-vc71-mt-1_32.dll 45,056bytes boost_date_time-vc71-mt-1_32.lib 26,164bytes libboost_date_time-vc71-mt-1_32.lib 521,764bytes boost_date_time-vc71-mt-gd-1_32.dll 77,824bytes boost_date_time-vc71-mt-gd-1_32.lib 26,312bytes libboost_date_time-vc71-mt-gd-1_32.lib 1,380,694bytes My project is setup as follows: Runtime Library: Multi-threaded Debug DLL (/MDd) Additional Include Directories: $(BOOSTHOME)\include\boost-1_32 Additional Library Directories: $(BOOSTHOME)\lib Additional Dependencies: boost_date_time-vc71-mt-gd-1_32.lib Using the above setup I could only link if the static library (libboost_date_time-vc71-mt-gd-1_32.lib) was also available. If not, I kept getting LINK : fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'libboost_date_time-vc71-mt-gd-1_32.lib' However, when this file is available, I am able to link and use the DLL (checked DLL usage using depends.exe). Does this make sense? I was under the impression that I should only need the import library. Also, how does it know the name if the library? Thanks.

The date_time library fails to compile with Borland C++ 5.6.4 for want of the recursive functions such as localtime_r etc. Borland needs adding to the list of compilers not supporting these functions in date_time/compiler_config.hpp. I built RC1 by replacing Spirit 1.8.x supplied with RC1 with Spirit 1.6 and then did: > bjam "-sTOOLS=borland" --without-wave stage The wave library requries Spirit 1.8.x so I chose to exclude it from the build. Hi Rene/Peter, I'd be happy to test this out in my environment. Question is: where can I get 1.33 from? Is there a single-drop of it available right now or should I CVS it? It might be useful to provide release candidates from the general download area on sourceforge. I understand that we're at release candidate #1 right now. I can't see where this is available (I've searched the archives too). Update: I just did a CVS export with an rtag for 1.33 and I've been getting a "cvs export: [00:44:01] waiting for david_abrahams's lock in /cvsroot/boost/boost/tools/build/test/startup/boost-root" for the last hour. It isn't easy to get hold of 1.33 is it? Hello: I am trying to use boost::variate_generator so that the generator and distribution can be set dynamically at run time. Currently, I am doing this using the following from http://www.boost.org/libs/random/random_speed.cpp Classes: RandomGenBase, DynamicRandomGenerator, GenericRandomGenerator Function: make_dynamic(URNG & rng, const Dist& d) Then I am able to do: boost::mt19937 rng; iosim::GenericRandomGenerator<int> g_int; g_int.set(iosim::make_dynamic(rng, boost::uniform_int<>(-2,4))); (use g_int()...) g_int.set(iosim::make_dynamic(rng, boost::geometric_distribution<>(0.5))); (use g_int()...) Hello, I'm using the BFS visitor that appears in the BGL book (p 66), which can also be found here: http://boost.org/libs/graph/doc/kevin_bacon.html I would like to compute a quantity that depends on the bacon number of a vertex, but only to distance d_max as my graphs are quite big (and I need to compute the quantity for each vertex, so I want a speedy computation). Ideally, I'd like to write something like the code below (my code appears after the comment), but this doesn't seem to work. Linker Problems with VC 7.1/ Boost 1.32 / Stlport 4.61

Hi, I've been happily using Boost 1.32 with Visual C++ 7.1 for a few months. Now I'd like to switch to STLPort, but can’t get my project to compile with STLPort due to linker errors (LNK2019 and LNK2001) in every boost library I use (signals, filesystem, thread). First I installed STLPort and to make sure that it is working properly with a dummy (boostless) project. Then I re-compiled boost with the stlport toolset: bjam "-sTOOLS=vc-7_1-stlport" "-sSTLPORT_PATH=C:\Programme\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003\add-ons" "-sSTLPORT_VERSIONS=4.6.1" "-sPYTHON_ROOT=c:/Programme/Python24" install Last but not least, I recompiled my project (multithreaded, static runtime) which is using boost. We have a real-space convolution code that we noticed was running notably slower in our c++ version than it was in our f90 version. So, we extracted out the key part of the code and started seeing if we could find a bottleneck. If it is of interest, this is all being done in a Mac OS X Cocoa Objective-C environment. Cocoa likes to know when it is going multi-threaded (http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Cocoa/Conceptual/ Multithreading/articles/CocoaDetaching.html) and I do let it know, but maybe I should let it know earlier. Regexp without ^ and $

I am using regex_match() from Boost 1.32.0. I am well famililar with Perl's regular expression, but I got a surprise from Boost's regex_match(). My basic code is static const regex CHAR(" char "); regex_match(newSpec, CHAR) If newSpec is " char ", then it matches, of course. However, if newSpec is " char * ", it doesn't match. Hmmmm. In my Perl experience, a regex of " char " says match those six characters if found ANYWHERE in newSpec. This would mean that a Boost regex of " char " would match a newSpec of " char * ", but it doesn't seem to. If I change the regex to ".* char .*", then it matches, implying that Boost's regex of " char " is being treated as if it were Perl's "^ char $". I could add the ".*" before and after each of my (many) regular exressions. However, I'm guessing there is a match_flag_type value which would do this for me. Unfortunately, none of the match constant descriptions seem to be what I need. How should I write a Boost regex so that it would find " char " anywhere in the input string regardless of any prefix or suffix? Merrill

Hello fellow boosters! I am looking to use boost:any. While gaining an understanding of how to use it, it strikes me that the real purpose it serves is that the virtual table functionality is exposed to the user. It seems that efficiency of table lookup are then the application responsibility. My first question - Is this a reasonable understanding? I have been looking to see if tag dispatching can somehow circumvent the cost of table lookup that would be necessary, and the only thing that strikes me is to - store a type id within the type boost::any represents, - retrieve this id and either use it in an if/else structure, or a function pointer lookup in an array. A complete tag dispatch implementation seems impossible, since the type id within the boost::any structure is a run time quantity. My second question - Are there better ways to do it than an index into an array of functions? Include boost in software distribution?

Hi, I'm packaging some software for distribution, and the software depends upon the 'program_options' library. I don't want to assume that the user has boost installed, or ever jam. So I was wondering about the potential for automagically building and using the 'program_options' library if it is not already present on the user's system. I would include the source files in libs/program_options/, and write a small Makefile for it. I would also include all the Boost headers. Is this sufficient, even though it wouldn't run the Boost configure script to determine system-specific settings? Can you see any problems in building this library without doing a full Boost install? Hi all, i just subscribed to this List ;) I have a Problem with C++ Member Functions and Pointers to this Member Functions so that they fit into a Function with take a normal Function. I guess i'm a Newbie, otherwise i should have already solved it, i think. ;) I want to use IPC Stuff from Ecore. But before you can make use of ecore_ipc you must initialize it, as far as i can see. I atached 4 Files, where i build a little Scenario: 1. Example.cpp // The Main Program 2. Testclass.hpp 3. Testclass.cpp 4. Makefile // Perhaps you must adjust some of the Variables I commented the important Points in the Code again. So i must first call ecore_ipc_init() // Testclass Line 68 and must supply 3 Functions to ecore for handling Events 1. A Function that is called, when a new IPC Server is added 2. A Function that is called, when a IPC Server is deleted 3. A Function that is called, when some Message is sent Namely: ecore_event_handler_add( ECORE_IPC_EVENT_SERVER_ADD, ipc_server_add, NULL ); ecore_event_handler_add( ECORE_IPC_EVENT_SERVER_DEL, ipc_server_del, NULL ); ecore_event_handler_add( ECORE_IPC_EVENT_SERVER_DATA, ipc_server_data, NULL ); "ipc_server_add", "ipc_server_del" and "ipc_server_data" are the functions that are available outside the Class Testclass The Example Program as it is compiles and i can start it, the ecore_pic_init() succeds the 3 Functions get "registered" but this 3 submitted Functions are standing outside my Testclass, but my Target is to have they inside my Testclass. boost::shared_ptr vs. NULL

I'm running Boost 1.32.0 under MinGW, so NULL is 0 rather than (void*)0. While I understand what smart pointers are all about, this is the first time I've tried converting code with conventional pointers to use smart pointers. My original application had class data members such as Node *mParent; which were initialized to NULL in the class constructor initialization lists. Later, the data members were assigned pointers to real Node objects. In particular, the application needs at various times to detect whether the data member is NULL or a "real" node and to occassionally set real nodes to NULL. OK, now I'm trying to convert to shared_ptrs. So, I have a typedef for notation convenience: typedef boost::shared_ptr<Node> NodePtr; The class data member declaration now looks like NodePtr mParent; but, how do I initialize it to NULL? In the smart pointer world *is* there such a thing as a generic NULL that can be assigned to all smart pointers. Or, will I need something like NodePrt NullNodePtr; // never initialized then assign mParent = NullNodePtr; This would mean that I would been a NullXPtr for every smart pointer type X I have. If that's the way it must be, then OK, but I would like to know how things are supposed to be done. Merrill

HI All, I am getting compilation errors using Microsoft (R) C/C++ Optimizing Compiler Version 13.10.2240.8 for IA-64 The compiler is shipped with Windows DDK (WINDDK\3790\bin\ia64). The same code compiles perfectly well with 32 bit Microsoft compiler (13.10.2179.0) The Boost version is 1.32.0 Is it a known issue with the compiler? Is there a workaround? Hi Sohail, Hashed indices will be available in 1.33 (due to be released in a matter of days). boost-consulting.com/boost shows the documentation as in the current CVS, so what you're seeing is really a preview of the release to come. The official docs are at boost.org.
