Are there better conversion functions from ISO date format (calendar, ordinal, week dates) in basic and/or extended format? Should conversion from invalid iso date like "20050231" fail or produce same results as date(2005,02,31). (I know that it produces the same results, but is it right to convert invalid iso date representation to valid date?) Another thing I noted, some conversion functions accept const std::string &, but most of them accept plain std::string, isn't better to convert all of them to constant references??? If anybody interested, I wrote such function that accepts iso date string in any of the above mentioned 6 combinations and returns date. It runs 90-100 times faster than equivalent date_from_iso_string from boost. And yes, it does make sure that "20050229" fails

Problems recognizing directionality of an edge

I am using boost 1.33.0. I'm the guy who is working with spanning trees. I've decided that two graphs are in order. 1. The data graph, of type Graph, is bidirectional. 2. The tree graph, of type Tree, is undirectional. Tree is undirectional because this is the only way that I get expected results from a dfs. However, the direction of the associated edge needs to be recorded as a property in the Tree graph. I'm having difficulty in initializing this property. The problem is that when I create the spanning tree, all I have is an Graph::edge_descriptor. I find that an edge will always be in the target vertex's in_edges container, and in the source vertex's out_edges container. This don't allow identification of the edge direction. Am I missing something?

A new directory, boost/mpl/math/unsigned_big_integral_, holds everything pertaining to unsigned_big_integral. The corresponding tag and forward declaration also have their own header files now. Also, enlarge_integral and its forward declaration have their own files as well. This should maximize decoupling of the three entities. The big_integral.cpp example and test programs have been updated to reflect these changes. As for double, whole_part and rational_part have been improved, but you'll need to #include unsigned_big_integral and rational to use them. Major limitation: attempting to calculate the rational_part of any double smaller than 1e+30 will most likely break your compiler's back; unsigned_big_integral and rational still won't mix. [date_time] problem adding negative number of months

Hello, when adding a negative number of months to a date(y, m, d), an exception "Month number is out of range 1..12" is raised if the resulting month m2 belongs to a year y2 < y and m2 > m. For example date(2005, Jan, 1) + months(-1) fails date(2005, Feb, 1) + months(-1) doesn't fail date(2005, Feb, 1) + months(-2) fails date(2005, Feb, 1) + months(-12) doesn't fail date(2005, Feb, 1) + months(-13) doesn't fail date(2005, Feb, 1) + months(-14) fails I checked it only with release 1.33 using the appended code. There is no problem adding or substracting any positive number of months. Hopefully I didn't miss this topic in the mailing list archive. compiler serialization library failed using -sTOOLS=msvc option

I have do it in linux as3.0, and all is ok. While I had to compiler boost 1.33 under windows and use the older compilers - MSVC 6. All env set, I think , is well. That is: SET MSVC_ROOT="c:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\VC98" SET VISUALC="c:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\VC98" PATH=d:\boost_1_33_0;d:\boost_1_33_0\tools\build\jam_src\bin.ntx86;%PATH% set SPIRIT_ROOT=c:/spirit16 I successfully got some libs as data_time, thread ,regex, etc. Except serialization. I download spirit-1.6.1,spirit-only-1.6.1,spirit-1.6.3,spirit-only-1.6.3. I tried everyone of these four, and all failed. But I really need the libs of serialization such as libboost_serialization-vc6-sgd-1_33.lib, Anyone knows how to compile these libs?

[serialization] serializing an stl container.

Hey, I've been banging my head against the wall for hours on this one. I'd like to serialize stl containers to an archive. Starting simple: a vector<int> This is what I think I should do: 1) include the proper support header file for the to be serialized container. #include <boost/serialization/vector.hpp> 2) create an archive, can be any type: std::stringstream ss; boost::archive::text_oarchive oa(ss); 3) operator<< my container into this archive: const vector<int> myvec; oa << myvec; The "oa << myvec" generates lots of warnings, and when running it anyway, it crashes in smart_cast.hpp I've tried lots of containertypes, and creating them in other ways than shown above, using a binary_oarchive, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. (int myint; oa << myint; works fine) Does anybody see what I'm missing here? Thanks, Lucas

When to close ofstream in XML serialize

[build] problem compiling current cvs

Hi, I don't seem to be able to build a current cvs checkout of boost on a linux system on which I used to be able to build all the boost libraries by invoking 'bjam stage' on the cvs version of a couple of weeks ago. Did something change with respect to the build procedure? Invoking bjam on a clean cvs checkout results in the following output: ~/boost> bjam Building Boost.Regex with the optional Unicode/ICU support disabled. [general/iostreams/iterators] Why not a forward and/or a random access istream iterator?

Hello, does anybody know whether there is something fundamentally wrong with designing an istream iterator that conforms with the forward, or even random access, iterator concepts? The std::istream_iterator conforms only with the simplest input iterator concept (stream need not support positioning). If a stream supports positioning, I cannot see why this should not work. If a streamable T has variable size on stream, we could do forward iteration, and if T has a known constant size on the stream, we could do random access iteration, right?! Since I haven't found any previous work in this direction on the web, I suspect there is a catch... (performance?) The only disadvantage I see, is that such iterators would have a rather different semantics from the std::(i)stream_iterator:s (equality etc), and that to create an end-iterator in the random access case, we cannot just rely on the default constructor, but need to pass in the stream, perhaps prepositioned at end. The original problem is to log/write data-records T on a persistant device, for which a std::stream(buf) interface is available. A reason for using the streambuf interface is that the log can support wrap-around functionality by simply using an intermediate streambuf that cares for necessary wrap-around functionality only, and otherwise just forwards transported characters to the device's streambuf. An enhanced std::istream_iterator would provide the log user with a convenient interface for reading records T out of the log. Thanks for any hints! /Mats

New version of mpl_math in the vault; problems compiling...

Hello, I have been playing around with the examples of this fascinating code. This reports on the problems I have encountered so far. The latest examples are compiled with g++ 3.4.4 and '-Wall -Wno-long-long -pedantic -O2' using using boost-1_33 result in a number of errors: 1) The example in runtime_value.cpp gives boost/mpl/math/number_sign.hpp: No such file or directory This files seems to be missing. 2) The example double.cpp get a *lot* of warnings: mpl/math/double_/aux_/integral_exp.hpp:35: warning: comparison between signed and unsigned integer expressions Looking at the offending line it seems that the constants that are shifted should really be unsigned numbers: BOOST_STATIC_CONSTANT( boost::int16_t , exp1 = (number < (1 << (exp16 + exp8 + exp4 + exp2 + 1))) ? 0 : 1 -> BOOST_STATIC_CONSTANT( boost::int16_t , exp1 = (number < (1u << (exp16 + exp8 + exp4 + exp2 + 1))) ? 0 : 1 The same should probably be applied to all the other BOOST_STATIC_CONSTANT in struct integral_exp. Refactor 1u and 65536u into named constants? 3) The example big_integral.cpp complains about extra semicolons. It is the macro BOOST_MPL_MATH_BIG_INTEGRAL_AUX_CONVERT_IMPL_APPLY_RESULT in convert_base10_digits.hpp that is the root cause. [Serialization] Loading from archive

Sorry I tried to post this through the newsserver gateway. I didn't see the message show up after half and hour so I'm assuming it didn't post correctly as this email address wasn't subscribed. I apologize if it does ----------ORIGINAL EMAIL---------------- I've been trying to get loading from an archive to work for a couple of hours now. Maybe I'm missing something so I can use anyones "eyes" for help. This is a program written using VC7.1 and I do have RTTI on. I am able to save data from a MAP file to an ASCII text file using the serialize functions, but I'm having a problem getting that information back into my object. Here are some relevant code snippets if anyone can point me in the right direction it would be really appreciated. Also is their an archive that I can search? Bug in XML serialization!!!

[random] spot the stupidity competition

Hail all, Thanks for giving us the libraries, now only if we were all smart enough to use them properley the world would be at peace. As it is I've been having some problems with my own code that is wrapped around the random library. I'm playing around with a game I'm making and needed some randomness, games that are predicatble are just a tad boring... I need to generate numbers with lots of different distributions so creating one or two won't really cut it for me, there would have to be hundreds. Instead I went and basically ripped the random_number_generator described under decorators into two flavours and then created a bunch of overloaded functions that used them. The generators use a single real engine, currently mt19937;. Basically, everythnig works fine, except that calling seed( n ) on the engine doesn't effect the generators that hold a ref to it, which I found somewhat bizzare. So, after a few tweaks I ripped out the code and dumped it into a minimal test case and can see that the seed( n ) method works just fine when I pull raw numbers out of the engine, but still doesn't seem to effect the generators I've defined. I'm fairly sure this is my problem but I was wondering if anyone would be good enough to take a peek and tell me why exactly this isn't working. I did have a search on Gmane but couldn't find anything that looked related to my problem. I'm not sure what is the done thing on this list so I've attached source, if you want a makefile then I can oblige but it is a fairly small case. The test program reads in three numbers, the seed to use, the number of numbers to generate and the max to use when generating numbers from a distribution. Feeding it different seeds makes the raw number change, but not the others. I have also included the output of two runs to show you what I mean. Failures in Solaris/gcc build

Hello, I built Boost on Solaris 9 with gcc 3.3.3 but I saw many "...failed" messages while building. Also, in the destination lib directory there's no regex library, and I think there should be one. Boost Test Memory Dumping...

I have a simple Boost program using the unit test framework. When I run the program in debug, I get a dump of memory leaks. I can't find a way to stop these memory leaks from being reported (other than fixing the leaks of course). What is the proper way of disabling this output? [Boost on Pocket PC] Is Boost supported on Pocket PC platforms?

From my early look inside the boost libraries I can see the serious advantages of using them; but would like to find out which Boost libraries are supported on Pocket PC before using them. What is the easiest (is there any) way to associate an edge property with both edge ends in an undirected graph in the BGL? I would like to iterate over the incident edges of a vertex, and obtain the edge property for that side of the edge the vertex is on. Ie. for A (5) <--E--> (1) B when iterating the incident edges of A, a request for this edge's (E) property would return 5, and when iterating vertex B's incident edge (E) it would return 1. For a directed graph this is simple: just store a "source" property and a "target" property in each edge. However in the case of an undirected graph the source vertex of an edge will always be the one you're iterating over incident edges from. So this wouldn't work, as it always return the "source" property then, no matter if I'm at A or B. A solution that came to mind is to convert the undirected graph into a directed graph with double edges everywhere. Then I can simply iterate over the out_edges and obtain the right property. However, this seems to be tedious and possibly a waste of space as I'm reinventing undirected graphs manually. Plus I have to rewrite edge removal etc. to keep things consistent. I'm aware that this is how BGL works internally anyhow for undirected graphs, so I don't want to reinvent it. Another "solution" is to store an associated vertex with the properties for the edge, giving two (vertex, value) pairs per edge. First of all this wastes space, and secondly it proves difficult to typedef this property inside the graph type as it is a cyclic dependency. External property maps could do the trick, but the space issue is still unresolved. (I'm primarily speaking of adjacency_lists in this post) A different issue: isn't BGLs genericity an illusion? Compared to for example the illusion of container independence in the STL? So far I've always needed to know what containers are used for the graph in order to make assumptions about iterator validity. For any algorithm using removal or addition a list is basically required, with all the added problems of the vertex indices not being ints... Is BGL still being actively developed? question about subgraphs

I am using boost 1.33.0. I want to use a subgraph to represent a spanning tree of a graph. This application requires adding and deleteing edges to just the tree and not the underlining graph though. Note that this wouldn't violate the requirements of a subgraph, a spanning tree contains all the vertices, and a subset of the edges of the underlining graph. Is it possible to do this, maybe through inheritance?

Hi. I have the following problem with MultiIndex. For struct Base { int id; }; struct Der : Base { }; I can't make a key extractor. This way typedef multi_index_container< Der, indexed_by< ordered_unique<member<Der, int, &Der::id> > >Set; doesn't work because &Der::id is of type pointer to member of Base. This other typedef multi_index_container< Der, indexed_by< ordered_unique<member<Base, int, &Base::id> > >Set; doesn't work because of the ChainedPtr overloads in member. Dear boosters, I'm trying to figure out why there is no way to define the iterator_adaptor's pointer type. I'm trying to write an iterator that concurrently accesses two containers, but the interface should look like it's only one container. Therefore, it is necessary to write my own value, reference and pointer type. However, the iterator_adaptors pointer type is always value*. Is it save to just overload the pointer typedef and reimplement operator->()? I'm not too much of a c++ expert, so if anyone could comment on that, I would greatly appreciate it. Christian

How do you access command-line arguments in test cases? According to http://boost.org/libs/test/doc/components/utf/index.html: "This function [boost::unit_test::test_suite* init_unit_test_suite ( int argc, char* argv[] )] should create and initialize top level instance of the class test_suite. The NULL pointer returned by the function is treated as a non-initialized test_suite - testing aborted and boost::exit_test_failure is returned. In other case the framework runs created instance of the class test_suite. The framework forwards command line argument specified during test invocation. It's guarantied that any framework-specific command line arguments are excluded." I understood this to mean that the command-line arguments are passed to the test cases ("The framework forwards command line argument specified during test invocation."), but this doesn't seem to be the case. So how do you pass and access command-line arguments in the test cases? I tried passing them explicitly: void digitise_graph_test(int argc, char* argv[]) { [...] } boost::unit_test::test_suite* init_unit_test_suite(int argc, char* argv[]) { test -> add(BOOST_TEST_CASE(&my_test(argc, argv))); } but this gives a compilation error: error C2102: '&' requires l-value A secondary question, or rather, a polite request: Could I ask that someone edit the documentation for unit test framework, please? While is it mainly intelligible, some of it is difficult to make sense of. Apologies to Gennadiy Rozental: this isn't meant as a personal criticism nor to sound patronising, but when a developer's first language is not the language in which the documentation is to be published, it is preferable to have a speaker of that language write the documentation or at least edit it.. I can cope with the grammatical or spelling errors and am not criticising those, but the meaning is somewhat difficult to derive in some places. Hi, the book "C++ Template Metaprogramming" by Abrahams and Gurtovoy describes a dimensional analyis framework that enables compile-time checking of physical units. For example dividing a length quantity by a time quantity results in a speed quantity. Now it's tempting to use boost uBLAS with these quantities: A position in space can be expressed as a vector of length quantities etc. But there's one problem: "// uBLAS assumes a common return type for all binary arithmetic operators" (traits.hpp, line 42, boost release 1.33) The promote_traits class relies on this when computing the following: static const std::size_t size = sizeof ( type_deduction_detail::test< typename base_type::x_type , typename base_type::y_type >(x + y) // Use x+y to stand of all the arithmetic actions ); This fails for most quantity operations since dividing a length by a length results in a different type than adding them. As a result Visual C++ 7.1 complains about not being able to deduce template arguments. Is there a way to fix this? I'm not that familiar with the internals of uBLAS, I don't even know the purpose of promote_traits. Malte

Failing to compile Boost.Threads 1.33.0 with Borland C++

I'm writting a program which could evaluate macros in a c++ header file, like this: #define CMD_IS_BASE 0x00001000 #define CMD_GET_ALL_DOMAINNAME (CMD_IS_BASE+0x1) /* Get all domain name from clients*/ After parsing is done, if you input a value(int), the program could tell you the symbol name, symbol meaning (if there is) corresponding to the valude. As to the above example, when you input 1025(or 0x00010001), the program should tell you it's correspond to symbol CMD_GET_ALL_DOMAINNAME, with it's detail comments "get all domain name from clients". I want also this program could parse the following paragraph too: // // MessageId: GL_CAT_SUMMARY // // MessageText: // // Summary%0 // #define GL_CAT_SUMMARY 0x00000002L It's easy to define a regex pattern, then call boost::regex_grep to got all these symbols and their meaning. But what if two formats exist in one header file? I wrote two grepper plug-ins(one is called singleline.dll, the other is McHearder.dll) to find these symbols, which re pattern contains more lines has the high pirioty to be called, then after it's called, the matched string should be erased or be filled with meaningless chars to prevent the later greppers to work on it. See example: The original string: // // MessageId: GL_CAT_SUMMARY // // MessageText: // // Summary%0 // #define GL_CAT_SUMMARY 0x00000002L #define CMD_IS_BASE 0x00001000 First we call McHeader.dll to work on this string, then it grepped: symble:GL_CAT_SUMMARY value: 2 comments:Summary Then the string should be only one lines, ie: #define CMD_IS_BASE 0x00001000 So, how could I achieve that? Exception Stack Trace Question.

Though catch(.) statement allows catching exception not associated with any class, it leads to ambiguous condition as there is no way to have any error message with it. Does Boost provide any means to be able to print stack trace when exception is caught ? In spite of many deficiencies with Java, it let's you access stack trace using printStackTrace() and trace out as what happened and how it happened. This is where C++ std::exception is lacking support and one has to look for such improvements from Boost community.

Hi all, This is a contrived example, but the solution should be the same. Assuming I have two rules, like so: section = identifier >> ch_p('{') >> *setting >> ch_p('}'); setting = identifier >> ch_p('=') >> value; // identifier and value are simple, but left off for brevity This should parse something like: somesettings { a = 12 b = "hello whirled" } Now, what I am looking to do is, if the parser fails parsing a value inside a "section", the parsing itself does not fail, but that section itself does. So if I also had: moresettings { this_is_valid = 12345 bigfaterror = 12"hi there"4.3"fewewfewfw" } Then the "somesettings" section would exist in the final AST, but "moresettings" would not. The error handling docs are a bit unclear to me, bit if I were to make a generic functor_parser which kept an error flag, how would I conditionally remove the section based on that value, seeing as it will already be mid-parse (I don't think something like if_p will work). Thanks in advance for any advice. On a side note, if I have a rule similar to (keyword >> identifier), the skip_parser will translate "somekeyword a" into "somekeyworda" and will parse it fine. However, what is to stop someone from removing the whitespace in the original code. With a quick glance, it appears the example c grammar from the spirit site will parse "voidfoo()" just fine due to this. Is there anyway I can tell the skip grammar to force a seperation? Hi all, I posted this question to comp.lang.c++.moderated and got a single reply that basically said "it looks like you need to use macros", but I thought I would ask the same question here, just in case you MPL folks have some tricks up your boost library sleeves. Basically, I need to make an enum and a static array of structures from one data set and I only know one way to do it, and it involves an amount of "trickiness" that some find disturbing. The original post: In the code shown below, the CODE_TABLE macro is used to insert a sequence of CODE(codeValue) macros. By changing the definition of CODE(codeValue) right before each usage of CODE_TABLE, I can create an enumeration of codeValues, then use the same CODE_TABLE definition to create a static lookup table that can be used to find information about a codeValue, given its numeric value. In this case, I am finding the name of the enumerated value. In the real application, there are a number of other fields available. (As you can probably tell, I have written a lot of C code in my time.) IMHO, the benefit of this technique is that you only maintain CODE_TABLE. All of the required code bits are generated from it. The downside is that Macros are Evil, the macro-that-is-a-list-of-macros is confusing, and you need to carefully redefine CODE(codeValue) in the proper locations. Additionally, the real application will have multiple classes that each define their own CODE_TABLE contents, so making it all work correctly is a little tricky. My question is this: Is there any method available in C++ that can let me do away with the macros while preserving the nice quality that only one data structure needs to be maintained? Something sophisticated and tricky with templates perhaps? I expect that the fact that I stringize the enum name when creating the lookup table makes a macro the only choice. But, since that is only one component in each lookup table entry in the real code, I might be willing to give it up in order to lose the macros. Here is the code example. [shared_ptr] Two basic questions

Hello, I have two questions regarding the proper use of boost::shared_ptr; both actually arose after reading http://www.boost.org/libs/smart_ptr/example/shared_ptr_example.cpp 1. In order for some class to work with std::set, you have to supply an operator with "less than" semantics. Why are you instead declaring a "greater than" operator? 2. In your examples, sometimes you're passing a shared_ptr by value, and sometimes by reference-to-const. Which is the better practice? Usually, common pointers are passed by value, but since in shared_ptr a reference counting mechanism keeps track of the copies, maybe it's better to pass it by reference whenever possible? [operators] boost::operators-like functionality for methods

Hello, Is it possible to get boost::operator like functionality for general methods? In other words, I'd like to be able to do the following: template<...> struct complete : public ... { void f(){a();} void g(); }; struct C : public complete<...> { void a(); void b(){g();} }; The resulting class C would have methods a,b,g,f. Here C::b refers to the complete::g and complete::f refers to C::a, so the dependencies are circular. It seems like the boost::operators setup can handle this kind of circular dependency, but I'm not how to do it for methods. Thanks, Geoffrey

MPL map / multi index dependency bug

The following code does not compile using gcc 3.4.3. I tried it with the same results using 1.32 and 1.33. Reversing the order of the #includes fixes the problem. Is this a known order dependency? If so, the generator gets equal seeds and returns equal values. How can I construct my program so the seeding happens only once? thread-safe iostreams - ideas for implementation ? I am currently experimenting with the boosth thread/mutex libraries, and did notice that the standard io streams are not thread safe. In the boost examples, this is handles by some global mutexes which are locked before writing to cout, cerr. I would like to have some classes which - behave exactly as cout, cerr and named file out streams - are thread safe mutex locked Are there any ideas on how to do this ?? I have the following possibilities in mind: 1) make a wrapper class around ostreams which have assigned a specific file or ostream as a member, make each input to operator<<() locked by a lock to a static mutex. advantage: not that hard to implement disadvantage: when outputting multiple things, like in mutex-cout << 'A' << 'B' << std::endl; another thread can come in between 'A' and 'B'. Not really thread safe, as I would like to have the entire line protected. 2) Make some trickery with manipulators and use the std:: stremas, something like cout << lock << 'A' << 'B' << std::endl << unlock ; advantage: pretty ok syntax (albeit one can forget to unlock!) disadvantage: I really have no idea how to implement in a niece and easy way .. 3) Make some trickery with out-put buffering something like having a class modeled like a stream_buff, which is large enough to hold what's written to the associated streams, and which does write to the cout or file streams in a mutex-locked fashion whenever it's manually flushed. ??? silly or possible ?? 4) finaly, a class having a boring print(std::string) function, which sets a lock on the static mutex advantage: easy-peasy disadvantage: C-print like, needs a new class type for each out-file, as a new static mutex has to be assigned to each out-file No nice C++ straming possible whatever I want to write needs to be converted into a std::string first. implementatio: can be templated by a string parameter which is the name of the file, or 'cout'/'cerr' Probably my ideas are not very bright, so I would appreciate some input from boost::thread users, which undoubtely have met the same problem before. John Maddock's TR1 library is accepted by Boost. Coincidentally, ISO has just announced that TR1 unanimously passed its final ballot, and so is now official. There were four reviews of John's submission, all urging acceptance. For most of the relatively few issues raised during review, John has already responded. Unless I missed it, however, John hasn't responded to Jonathan Wakely's review comments yet, anduld do so when he gets a chance. For example: It might be useful to list all the BOOST_HAS_TR1_XXX macros on the Configuration page, so you can glance at them all at once (most people will know what components each macro relates to.) Errors compiling greg_month.cpp

[iostreams] Problems using filtering_stream and code_converter

Hi, I'm using boost 1.33.0 on windows (VC++6). I would like to use a code_converter to convert internal std::wstring's (which I understand are ucs2 in windows/vstudio, but that shouldn't matter here I guess) to utf-8 when saving to file. The call stack is too deep to include here, but one of the last things are: policy_type& dev() { return **dev_; } in boost.iostreams.detail.code_converter_impl which calls boost::iostreams::detail::optional<boost::iostreams::detail::concept_adapter<boost::iostreams::basic_file_sink<char> > >::operator*() operator*() asserts on initialized_ which is false in this case. I've tried both with vc++6 sp5 and vc++ 7.1 with the same results. Also, there is no difference if I use this typedef for my_sink: typedef boost::iostreams::code_converter<boost::iostreams::file_sink> my_sink; so I don't think my codecvt implementation is to blame... The file out.txt actually gets filled with the expected data. Am I going about this the completely wrong way or am I just missing some important detail? Dear All, I am encountering a problem with BOOST_STATIC_ASSERT, it is producing compile-time errors that are a little cryptic. Instantiation of the rtm class with a non float or non complex type, such as: ejg::oned::rtm<char> M; causes the following compiler error. error: invalid application of sizeof to incomplete type boost::STATIC_ASSERTION_FAILURE<false> Boost 1.32.0 g++ 4.0.1 Obviously generating a compiler error is the correct behaviour, I want to make sure that only complex or float type objects are instantiated. The problem is that the compiler error is rather cryptic. >From the documentation of boost http://www.boost.org/doc/html/boost_staticassert.html, I should be seeing Illegal use of STATIC_ASSERTION_FAILURE<false> Is there any way this can be improved by generating the error or is it too much of a compiler issue? -ed

If there is something wrong with the way I'm asing this question, would someone please point it out to me?) I am trying to compile a host (X86, linux) and a target (ARM9) version of the boost_1_33_0 libraries using the "standard" (Core3) gcc and a gcc-arm cross-compiler. Can someone point me to the documentation that is "authoritative" for 1_33_0 and describes how to configure [which files] and invoke bjam for multiple compilers on the same computer? I found (and read) *LOTS* of historical material describing how to configure and invoke bjam for v1 and v2 for prior versions. Vladimir Prus provided an answer (in the form of a user-config.jam mod) for 1_32_0 last April... <extract> I'd use this: using gcc : 3.4 ; using gcc : 3.4arm : /path/one/arm-g++ : <other stuff> ; using gcc : 3.4ppc : /path/two/ppc-g++ : <other stuff> ; and them bjam gcc-3.4 gcc-3.4arm gcc-3.4ppc </extract> ...which worked fine with 1_32.0, but I can't get it to work with the 1_33_0 version. [BGL] Multiple adaptations of graph

Hi, I have a simple directed graph class (let's call it MyGraph) which I want to adapt for BGL algorithms. I've defined the necessary traits and functions (in_edges, target etc.) and everything works fine. Problem is I want to be able to treat the graph as an undirected graph as well when using some of the BGL algorithms, but since the graph_traits are only templatized on the graph type I can't define a new set of traits since graph_traits<MyGraph> is already defined. The only solution I've come up with so far (after 10 minutes of thinking :) is to define a new class, MyDirectedGraph, which is an exact copy of MyGraph and define a set of traits for this new class. And then when I want to use the undirected version of the algorithms on my MyGraph object I cast it to a MyDirectedGraph. Somehow I have a feeling there must be a more robust and elegant way to solve this problem. The exception is std::runtime_error: Regular expression too big , and only under Win64/cl1400 and RHEL/gcc323 Changing the regex slightly sometimes avoids the exception... I am new user of Boost, I tried to use boost::variant first, but in comparison to boost::any performance of boost::variant appears to be around 4 times slower, so settled for boost::any. Also boost::any has cleaner interface but I don't know how to query current type information for boost::any ? My code looks like following map<unsigned int, boost::any> result_table; result_table[1] = 543.434; vector<int> vec; .. Some vec population code; result_table[2] = vec; Now I need to develop a stringify function for result_table; I can fetch the results back as boost::any value = result_table[2]; But I need to know the type of value, so that I can treat it accordingly to stringify; I know there exists type_traits, but very limited examples of type_traits is provided on Boost documentation and particularly, I am clueless about how to use type_traits in above context to find out what is the current type returned by result_table[int] Also I want to know if Boost has any Hash map implementation that can be superior in performance compare to regular std::map ?? Type List Iteration?

How do I iterate over a type list and call a function? MPL? I have a base class BASE that has several subclasses A, B, C that have special capabilities, but no way to identify those capabilities aside from the type. I would like to determine if an object of type BASE is also of one of the special subclasses: ie void f( BASE* base) { if ( dynamic_cast< A* >( base ) != NULL ) { some_function( dynamic_cast< A* >( base ) ); } else if ( dynamic_cast< B* >( base ) != NULL ) { some_function( dynamic_cast< B* >( base ) ); } else if ( dynamic_cast< C* >( base ) != NULL ) { some_function( dynamic_cast< C* >( base ) ); } } I think you can see why I'd like a type list iterator solution to this. I have arranged for the some_function to be a template as well to make things easier. What I am looking for is the equivalent of find_if() but for types and done at run time. How do you close a filtering_ostream object once you have finished writing to it? In my program below, I would expect the file "hello.bz2" to have been written once the close() function has been called, but it is not the case. The contents are not actually written until I exit the scope in which the filtering_ostream object is defined (at which point the destructor presumably does the job). (The file "some_text.txt" contains just the text "hello world!" so I would expect it not to be written until the file is closed.) I would like to be able to do this explicitly and not have to rely on the destruction of the object - could you explain how can this be done? Another question: what should the second parameter to close() be? I've used BOOST_IOS::trunc here, but is there some other more appropriate value? [mpl] possible bug in insert<set, x>

I'm having trouble with insert<> as called on a set. Specifically, it doesn't seem to be possible to iterate over sets built with insert<>. The following code, for example, works correctly (or at least, compiles without errors): --- typedef set<double, char> m_set; typedef transform<m_set, lambda<identity<_1> > >::type result; --- but the following (which as I understand it should be equivalent) fails to compile: --- typedef insert<insert<set<>, double>::type, char>::type m_set; typedef transform<m_set, lambda<identity<_1> > >::type result; --- The error consists basically of the compiler complaining there's no member type next_ in set<mpl_::na, mpl_::na ...>. I've provided the full error log in an attachment (I'm using g++ 4.0.2 and Boost 1.33.0). The bug isn't specific to transform; I've encountered it when using other algorithms when they iterate over a set built with inserts. It's possible this problem relates to the problem discussed in this message: (http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.lib.boost.devel/116988) which also concerns non-identical behavior for sets built with the two methods. I hope I'm not doing something stupid, I'm starting to feel like a broken record here...

I try to compile the first.cpp example of boost program_options library I use the command g++ first.cpp -lboost_program_options-mt. It fails when linking. But I also try use the same command to compile simple_ls.cpp of filesystem, boost_back_inserter_example.cpp of iostream, days_alive.cpp of date_time(The library link is also different). I apologize if this is a duplicate: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------- Hi All, Boost newbie here: I am having problems with getting serialization to work with my app. I have a top-level "environment" context that objects in my app need to be associated with. I thought about various ways to accomplish this and I thought the best way might be to derive an Archive class that maintains a reference to the context and use custom save_construct_data/load_construct_data overrides. However, I am hitting a snag and I don't quite understand what is happening. I derive an input and output archive from text_iarchive/text_oarchive respectively and I use this archive context. [autolink] Debug + Multi Threaded DLL

Hi. I have a project that uses boost.threads and sdl, under vc7.1. Because of sdl, I have to link with the non-debug multi threaded dll version of the runtime libraries, even on debug builds. However, autolinking picks the debug version of boost.threads so I get conflicts. Is it right to disable autolinking and force a non debug version of boost.threads? Any ohter idea? Thanks, Bruno

I know that if you want to install the binary version of realplayer from real.com, you have to install these *-compat packages. [mpl] trouble with conditionals

I'm struggling with a problem of how to correctly use conditionals in MPL. In a nutshell, the problem is that the compiler greedily evaluates all parts of a conditional, even the branch that isn't followed. This is a problem not just for performance, but because sometimes the unused branch might not compile. I know that eval_if is supposed to address this problem, but unless I'm missing something, it doesn't seem to be a complete solution. It delays evaluating the branches until one of them is selected, but the compiler still evaluates the *arguments* to both branches. If the arguments themselves don't compile, I'm screwed, despite the fact that the parts of my code that are actually relevant (the branches that get used) are perfectly correct. How do I resolve this problem? Here's a toy example, a metafunction which, given a map, finds the value associated with the key "char" and, if it exists, increments the associated value (which we assume is numeric): template <typename m_map> class toy_metafunction { typedef typename if_<typename has_key<m_map, char>::type, typename insert<m_map, pair<char, typename plus<int_<1>, at<m_map, char> >::type > >::type, m_map >::type type; }; typedef typename toy_metafunction<map< > >::type result; This does not compile, because the compiler attempts to evaluate plus<int_<1>, void_>. hi I'm new to boost.threads and have a basic question. During program execution the user has to check the connection to a server. This action should take place in a simple thread. If the user gets bored waiting for responce, he should be able to stop the process and return back to the main application. Is there a proper standard solution? For now I try to yield the thread holding the connection methods. In this case the inner methods all terminate and are not going to be stopped. My first attemp is to stop this inner methods by hand. ld warnings when building boost on Fedora Core 4 with gcc 3.4.4

I've recently switched my Linux system to Fedora Core 4 which has gcc 4.0.1 as the default compiler. Since the code I'm developing must be built with gcc 3.4.4, I have installed a copy of gcc 3.4.4 at /usr/local/gcc/gcc34. When I build boost with this compiler I get hundred of similar errors from /usr/bin/ld. I'll attach those warnings to the end of this email. I invoked the build with the command: ./bjam -d2 --with-serialization -sGCC_ROOT_DIRECTORY=/usr/local/gcc/gcc34 -sBUILD="release" I do see boost get built using my specified compiler but get all the warnings. Building boost without specifying the gcc 3.4.4 compiler does not produce any errors. I suspect the problem has something to do with the version of ld that gets invoked but even if it does, how would I fix it. ld is version: GNU ld version 2.15.94.0.2.2 20041220 Can anyone help? [Boost][mpl] vector_c boolean operations

Hi, I'm new to the list so this may have been answered elsewhere (like a FAQ for MPL) but I couldn't find it. I've got 2 vector_c types like this typedef vector_c<int, 1,2,1,1,-2,0,1> p1; typedef vector_c<int, 0,3,0,-1,1,3,5> p2; and a resultant type defined as typedef vector_c<int, 1,1,0,1,1,0,1> r; that I want to compare at compile time using logic like this r = p1 || p1 && p2 This pseudo code is what I want to do but I know this doesn't work. Is there some trouble with defining: class Base { virtual void some_function() = 0; }; ??? I can understand the void f() entry point for C callbacks but you can use C++ to do the work for you.
