Michael, Thanks for the reply. You are absolutely right. I'm coming back to C++ after years of Java and I haven't been careful enough about reading the stl docs. One quibble with your solution is that I am doing an upcast not a down cast, but your solution worked perfectly for me. Newbie build problem

I too am having similar problems to Keith Weintraub with regard to failed and skipped targets. I applied the suggested addition of the Platform SDK, to the include paths, but in the process I had to reboot my machine (for unrelated reasons). Since then, I get virtually nothing actually built (quite a leap backwards really :-) The symptom I get is related to expansion of the compiler name, as the messages are all of the type: '/Zm800' is not recognised as an internal command... etc or '/nologo' is not ... The environment is Win2K with VC6 and the Intel compiler v8.0 (9 on order). The command line is bjam "-sTOOLS=intel-win32" install Now there's a certain familiarity about this problem, but at my age, memory doesn't serve me all that well. boost.thread problem

I'm a newbie to boost, and I'm trying to use boost.thread together with STLport in VC6. [program_options] Finding out the type of the options

Hello, I'm using program_options, and I want to be able to learn what the option type is by manipulating an options_description object. As I illustrate in the example below (boost 1.33), I can do this if the option has been given a default value. Could anyone suggest a wasy to this for options without a default? The story behind this question is that I would like to be able to build a simple GUI parameter dialog based on the options_description, and I want to map different types to different widgets. progress_timer, incorrect timing

I got strange results with boost::progress_timer - it shows timings like 1.45s whereas it took about 15 sec. to complete a routine. It used to work ok, but I have no idea why it just doesn't work anymore! I use freebsd 4.11 and clocks_per_sec is defined 128. sysconf(_SC_CLK_TCK) also returns 128, but clock counter is not correct completely. I wrote simple test class, to see what's wrong: struct Timer { clock_t t; time_t tt; Timer() : t(clock()), tt(time(0)){} ~Timer(){ std::cout << "Elapsed interval: " << (static_cast<double>(clock() -t))/CLOCKS_PER_SEC << "s " << (time(0)-tt) << "s\n" ; } }; this is the output: Elapsed interval: 1.52344s 33s 1.52 s <- output by boost::progress_timer. so, you may see that measured time is completely wrong. I rewrote it with microtime(...) and it works correctly now. any ideas what's wrong, why clock() doesn't work anymore? Wouldn't that be a good idea to use microtime for unices? thanks

Compiling with Visual C++ 2005 Express Edition

Folks, I am having trouble compiling and building boost with Visual C++ 2005 Express Edition. It gets a lot of the job done with the command (under cygwin): bjam "-sTOOLS=vc-8_0" "-svc80_ROOT=C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\VC" That directory is where my VC++ is installed. In addition the bjam script (which I treat as a black box) could not find the vsvers32.bat script which I ran by hand. I had to do that to get anything to work. The last run that I did ignored about 126 "targets" and had errors in 82 "targets". Some (maybe all, since they all scrolled by so quickly) said that windows.h could not be found. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks for your time, KW

It took me a while for the penny to drop the first time I used this library. FWIW my (now obviously erroneous) reasoning was that a positional_options_description was just another kind of options_description, and that "input-file" was in both of them in example/program_options.cpp so it could be used as both an option and a positional argument. I only wanted it as a positional parameter, so I omitted it from the options_description. I also found myself wanting to generate a usage message like this... po::positional_options_description pd; cout << "Usage: " << progname << " [options]" << pd << endl; rather than having to loop through pd. [serialization] Incorrect assertion in basic_binary_oprimitive?

I agree with the objection raised by the original poster. The assertion in archive/basic_binary_oprimitive.hpp should more properly be an exception. Standard library ostreams fail silently when in an error state (including std::ofstreams that fail to open a file). Writing a std::string, int, double, or any other data to a default-constructed std::ostream is a no-op. The only exception to this appears to be writing a boost::serialization archive to a std::ostream, which under some circumstances fails with an abort when "assert(os.good());" fails in archive/basic_binary_oprimitive.hpp. There is also an exception thrown based on the state of the ostream in the same function as this assertion. The user can choose to catch this if she decides that the default std::ostream failure policy (a no-op) is acceptible. By putting the assertion in there, you force the user to always have a valid, writable std::ostream, which is precisely the opposite of what the user expects from years of using std::ostreams.

serialization: efficient binary archive

Hello, I want to write simple binary searialization class. the serialized data should be as compact as possible, e.g. I don't want to have "serialization::archive" string etc, since most of the time I need really basic serialization performed into many separate archives: something like hunrdreds of archives that contain simple int, or string. I also don't need any versioning. These data serializations are for a short period of time (automatically removed after a few minutes), to share data between multiple processes on the same machine. Basicly, I need to serialize many key-value pairs, and then to be able to extract values by their keys. Keys are simple strings, values can be anything. Since I cannot use boost::any for value part, then I decided to go a way around. I'll have a map that maps string keys to the serialized binary string of value, and then this big map is serialized. The other process then deserializes this map and if it accesses some value it also needs to deserialize the value. I really need simple searialization, something like i:1234,s[5]:Hello for int(1234) and string("Hello") with all the numbers serialized in binary etc, without any BE/LE code - always the same machine used. I think it would be really enough for me to have serialization of numbers, strings and binary data, but I want to use boost::serialization to allow users to insert objects of their own classes in that key-value pairs. basicly, my goal is to create such class that maps string keys to any data, then all this map is serialized and some other process deserializes this map and accesses values by keys. Is there's something in serialization library you could suggest me to look at. I viewed demo_fast_archive, but I cannot find good info on creating my own archive classes. It seems that my problem would be completely solved if there were some way to serialize boost::any, in this case I would only needed to serialize std::map<std::string,boost::any> thanks

I'm making progess on using program_options. Using std::exception& gave me the real error message; but problems still remain. po::options_description desc("Options"); desc.add_options() ("help,h", " Display this help message.") I still can't get the positional parameter, but I've got other problem to research first. The options_descriptions above defines --limit as an unsigned integer with a default value of 1. It does get a default value of 1, and it will let you specify another unsigned integer value. But if you specify a non-unisgned integer (e.g., --limit=xxx or --limit=-5), then it bypasses the exception handling and calls Dr. Watson. The reported error is a wild write to unwritable memory. Any ideas how to chase this problem? Merrill

It's curious that the source has the const T& in member_save commented out. Is there a workaround for this? Or is it planned to be fixed in the next release?

Christian, If I put an unknown --option on the command line, I get an exception with an "unknown option" message, just as you would expect. If I omit --limit from the command line, then it gets defaulted to 1, just as it should. However, if I put --limit on the command line with an illegal value, say a string or a negative number rather than an unsigned int, then there is no exception message, even though I am catching std::exception& and (...) and printing a message for both. Instead, Dr Watson is called, apparently without triggering a C++ exception. Merrill

lambda and shared_ptr?

All, I'm trying to use lambda and shared_ptr together, but I'm running into a problem. Please see the code below. I'd like the lambda-generated functor to hold the shared_ptr by value, such that its ref count is incremented. This doesn't seem to be happening. Instead, the shared_ptr is deleted when foo() returns, resulting in undefined behavior. What am I doing wrong? I've found this partial solution for what I'm searching for. This code sorts by target, name. I want to sort by source, target. I find that in boost::graph adjacency_list edge descriptors there is a "get_target" method, but no "get_source" method. Can someone tell me how to either find the equivalent or give the comparison function object a non-default constructor so I can pass it a graph reference? Actually in the latter, I need assistance in feeding the graph reference to the graph object at construction time, not writing a constructor. Boost::thread scheduling under HPUX

Under heavy load, my HP-UX 11i application can run multiple, CPU intensive boost::thread's. Unfortunately, this has the side effect that other processes suffer in terms of performance. I initially thought that decreasing the nice value of my app would do the trick and ensure that other processes with a higher value would get priority by the kernel scheduler. However, this does not appear to be true (my app's nice value is 30 when most other processes run at 20). The requirement of my app is to run only whenever the system is idle. Is there a way this can be done using boost::thread or does anybody know how I could configure my process under HP-UX so that it behaves as intended?

program_options: St9exception Exception?

I posted a question earlier about why I couldn't get Boost 1.33.0 program_options to "see" my positional parameter and why it bombed on unexpected options. Volodya pointed out that an illegal option throws an exception and asked if I had a catch. I felt like a fool for forgetting exceptions and through that was the problem. Then I looked at the code again. The method that uses program_options to read the command line had no try/catch, but the main program that called that method DID have the call wrapped in a try that has catches both for std::exception and (...). And yet, it wasn't trapping anything. Between ZoneAlert and Windows, I *think* I know the problem: something is attempting to access NULL, so I'm getting an OS memory error that C++ exceptions can't catch. I moved try's and catch's around in the code until I found the offending statement: po::variables_map vm; ...a declaration of all things. [BGL, Graph] choose the correct container to handle graph with a property

Hello, I have a graph representing the Network topology and I want to replace it by a BGL graph. My problem is that I need to find a vertex by its IP address (an internal property), but I think we can only find a vertex with its vertex_descriptor. A solution is to maintain a map from IP address to vertex_descriptor. But removing a vertex with vecS for VertexList invalidates all vertex descriptors. Unfortunately, I need some efficiently to find a vertex, so listS seems not appropriated. Finally, I try to use setS for VertexList (and it works IMHO), but in the documentation: "The container must model Sequence or RandomAccessContainer." Hence, my questions are: - Can I use setS for VertexList ? And if I can't, why ? - Is there a better solution to find vertex by an internal property that handle an exterior map ? Cheers, -- Johan

Volodya, Sorry about the formatting. It annoys me too. However, I'm using Earthlink's online Web Mail, so I'm stuck with some of their choices. There new mail (available RSN) may have a formatting option. RE: exception DOH! I should have thought of that. For everything else, I'm always very careful to check for exceptions. In this case, I tacitly assume it worked like getopts and just left unknown options on the command line. (Old habits die hard.) I haven't got time to try now, but I will put in the exception handlers and see what it's complaining about with my positional parameter. I realize that "bomb" wasn't very precise, but it was hard to describe what happened. First, Zone Alert would become excited and claim that my program was attempting to do something "dangerous". (Yes, that should have clued me in to an exception being thrown, but I was dense.) If I told Zone Alert to let it happen, then Windows popped up a dialog offering to send a report to Microsoft about my incompetence. :-) Thanks for your help. Merrill

Will, I've changed my original po::store(parse_command_line(argc, argv, desc), vm); to po::store(po::command_line_parser(argc, argv). options(desc). positional(pd). run(), vm); where desc is is an options_description and pd is a positional_options_description. This looks like an exact match for po::variables_map vm; po::store(po::command_line_parser(ac, av). options(desc).positional(p).run(), vm); po::notify(vm); which is the example from http://www.boost.org/doc/html/program_options/tutorial.html. However, the code still bombs if I give it a positional parameter or an option it isn't expecting. Merrill

I am using Boost 1.33.0 with MinGW on Windows XP. I am using the following program_optins code to collect command line arguments: po::options_description desc("Options"); desc.add_options() ...[everyting defined in here works as advertised]... ;//add-options() // specify the single, required graph file positional parameter po::positional_options_description pd; pd.add("graph_file", 1); po::variables_map vm; po::store(parse_command_line(argc, argv, desc), vm); po::notify(vm); ... The above code is shamelessly lifted from the tutorial. Everything defined in desc.add_options() works including the "-h" alternative to "--help". However, two things fail. * vm.count("graph_file") returns 0 regardless of whether there are positional argument(s). * specifying an -x, --xx, --xx=n option where "x" or "xx" is not included in desc.add_options() causes store() to not return (the program simply stops). Dear all, we use boost a lot in our code, but unfortunately this slows down the build times enormously. Although we use the precompiled header in Visual Studio, tracing the includes (with the /showincludes option), it seems that even relatively basic libraries (e.g. tuples, boost\utility.hpp, boost function and boost bind) end up in a massive include of mpl and type traits header files. So I begin to wonder if this wonderful template and preprocessor stuff is really such a good idea for those basic library. Besides that it doesn't improve the readability of the source, my guess is that it has a negative effect on short build times. Can a boost guru comment on this? Note that this is not a criticism, only an observation. I always like to write a boost bind construction, especailly with the == addition in 1.33. Wkr, me

calling on the template gods

I have been attempting to hide the boost interface when using the boost smart pointers. I basically want to get rid of boost declarations in my API's. This basically involves typedef-ing template classes, and the best solution I have been able to come up with is: template <typename T> struct pointer { typedef boost::scoped_ptr<T> obj; typedef boost::scoped_array<T> arr; typedef boost::shared_ptr<T> sobj; typedef boost::shared_array<T> sarr; }; so I can do things like pointer<int>::arr var(new int[10]). This works fine, but if I try to get tricky it falls apart. Another example: template <typename T> class Stuff { private: pointer<T>::arr some_stuff; }; This does not work (I can't even start to tell you why), but I have hit the point where I have to start second guessing my approach to this problem. Are there other (possibly terrible) tricks to get around the typedef templates problem? Any input will probably help. -thanks

Hi, I'm (still) trying to use the strong components algorithm with a graph storing vertices as a list (listS). I've learned thanks to this mailing list that I had to explicitely declare and intialize a vertex_index map. The declaration of my graph type should therefore look like that: typedef adjacency_list<listS, listS, directedS,property<vertex_index_t,std::size_t> > Graph; and the component map should be declared this way: typedef graph_traits<Graph>::vertices_size_type v_size_t; //the range of ComponentMap vector_property_map< v_size_t, property_map<Graph, vertex_index_t>::type> componentMap(num_vertices(g), get(vertex_index,g) ); //g is an instance of Graph I would like to know if there is a way to combine this with the use of bundles. In practice, I used to have this declaration for my graph type: typedef adjacency_list<listS, listS, directedS,VertexBundle> Graph; with: struct VertexBundle{ int id; }; How should I merge these two types of declarations? Is there a way to define the required vertex_index as a bundle property and to use it to define my component map afterward? Thanks! [IOStreams] linking the iostreams libs with my own zlib.lib

Hi there, my project is using its own created zlib.lib, thats why I want to create the iostreams libs using our own zlib.lib . Creating the iostreams libs I use the following build command: bjam -sTOOLS=vc-7_1 --libdir=c:\boost\lib --with-iostreams "-sZLIB_BINARY=C:\CHH\External\Libraries\Release\zlib" "-sZLIB_INCLUDE=C:\CHH\External\Includes\zlib" "-sZLIB_LIBPATH=C:\CHH\External\Libraries\Release" --without-python stage Note that the ZLIB_SOURCE variable is missing. Otherwise the build would create it's own zlib library. Here is the warning I get when bjam is building the debug lib: LINK : warning LNK4098: defaultlib 'MSVCRT' conflicts with use of other libs; use /NODEFAULTLIB:library The problem arises because it's using a release built zlib.lib with the debug built iostream lib, since I can only pass one zlib to the build command. A solution would be to have two variables ZLIB_LIBPATH_DEBUG and ZLIB_LIBPATH_RELEASE. Which is the standard procedure. Or is there a variable in the boost build for creating debug lib only? matrix resize problem with version 1.31

Hi all, I've been using the library in a computer with gcc 3.4.4 and boost 1.32 (in knoppix). I'm interested on uBLAS. The problem is that I need my code working in a different machine (robot) with gcc 3.4.1 in RH9. I've proved 1.30 (which generates a warning becouse gcc version is unknown) and 1.31 versions and there are problems when a matrix is resized. The values of the matrix are moved from their original positions. Also I have problems with zero_vector. Are there some difference between boost library versions? Could I do something to fix that problem?. Do I need to install gcc 3.4.4?. I've seen that gcc 3.4.4 is tested for uBLAS. [iostreams] WinRar cannot read zlib archive

Hi there I just have a simple question regarding the format of a zlib archive. Somehow WinRar cannot read the archive. If I use the simple example application provided in the zlib distribution WinRar is able to read it. This makes me wondering what difference is in the archive generated by boost::iostreams? Here is my example code which works fine. [MPL] how do i validate a predicate template?

Folks, What is the best way to pass a std::vector<boost::shared_ptr<Derived> > to a function that expects a std::vector<boost::shared_ptr<Base> >? Can I use a cast or should I create a new std::vector<boost::shared_ptr<Base> > by iterating over the std::vector<boost::shared_ptr<Derived> >? Here is some sample code. Boost.Iostreams - Filtering Stream questions (flushing, interactive input)

I've been trying to use Boost.Iostreams, with mixed success. I've got a few more stumbling blocks that hopefully I can get some help with :-). First, I have a socket class, which I've used Boost.Iostreams to create a nice interface for. Quick details: class winsock_device { typedef boost::iostreams::bidirectional_device_tag category; //..implementation.. }; class winsock_socket { typedef winsock_device stream_device_type; typedef boost::iostreams::stream_buffer< stream_device_type > stream_buffer_type; typedef std::iostream stream_type; stream_device_type m_stream_device; stream_buffer_type m_stream_buffer; stream_type m_stream; public: winsock_socket( SOCKET raw_socket ) : m_stream_device( raw_socket ) , m_stream_buffer( m_stream_device ) , m_stream( & m_stream_buffer ) {} stream_type & stream() { return m_stream; } //..more implementation.. }; The implementation seems to work, tests show it to be working fine for input and output (with output needing to be flushed). Only problem is that the newlines are mismatched - a simple telnet chat client gets supurflous \r characters using std::getline, so I decided to wrap around the stream using a boost::iostreams::filtering_stream< boost::iostreams::bidirectional >, which is where things fall apart. I took my simple example, and replaced: std::iostream & ios = socket->stream(); with: namespace bios = boost::iostreams; bios::filtering_stream< bios::bidirectional > ios; ios.push( socket->stream() ); both with the same testing code: std::string nickname; ios << "Welcome, user - please enter a nickname:\n" << std::flush; socket->stream().flush(); std::getline( ios , nickname ); ios << "Welcome, " << nickname << "\n"; ios << "*** actual chatting not yet implemented ***\n"; ios << "Disconnecting you now, bye " << nickname << " !!!\n" << std::flush; socket->stream().flush(); This failed to work at all at first, eventually I figured out I needed to flush first the ios stream, and then the underlying socket->stream. This brings me to: question 1: Is there a workaround to allow an ending stream of (std::iostream &) to be flushed automatically by flushing filtering_stream? Even with no filters installed, however, the program freezes (until I shut down the telnet client) when I attempt to read a line from the stream, even after entering multiple newlines - I'm not exactly sure what's happening here. This brings me to: question 2: How can I get the input moving through my stream? Do I need to start a seperate thread to constantly flush() the stream that the main thread is blocked on i/o for? I thought of making it a derived class of adjacency_list and then define constructors to construct objects of this class. But my problem is how to (for example) set vertex properties in the constructor? Regularly if I want to add properties to vertices on a graph g, I use vertices(g) to get iterator of vertices and then I use this iterator, but what can I do in the constructor? Too many library variants

When I built Boost 1.33.0 for MinGW, I just specified the toolset. As a result I got 28! variants on the set of Boost libraries. >From the various file names, I can figure out most of the variants: d = debug mt = multi-threaded s = static but there are other variants which aren't as obvious. For example, what's the distinction among boost-<libname>-mgw-1_33.dll boost-<libname>-mgw-1_33.lib boost-<libname>-mgw.lib The two .lib files have the same sizes and timestamps, so they appear to be the same file with and without the Boost version in the name. Is the idea that if you use the library WITHOUT the version number suffix, then you can upgrade to a new version without having to modify your make file? OK, what's the distinction between the .dll and .lib? I understand that they linker needs one set of information about library function names and entry points while the actual function bodies are needed at run time. However, I thought all of that information is in the .dll file. On the other hand, the .dll version is so much bigger than the .lib that there must be more than an entry point table involved. Then there are the libboost-* variations... I understand that in the Unix world, the -L linker option specifies the library directory while the -l<name> option tells the Unix linker to look for the lib<name>.a file. OK, but how does that work with MinGW's ld.exe linker on Windows. Some of the libraries are available only in the static version, but the only static libraries are the libboost-* variants. There is a statement somewhere in the Boost library documention that the selection of libraries should be automatic in Windows because of pragma's in the libraries. However, I haven't been able to find where MinGW supports that pragma. Merrill

split() differences between 1.32.0 and 1.33.0

Hello, I recently upgrade from Boost 1.32.0 to 1.33.0, since I just upgraded to Mac OS X 10.4 from 10.3. I noticed a slightly different behavior in boost::algorithm::split between these two versions. If you have a trailing delimiter, like: vector<string> results; ba::split(results, ",foo,", ba::is_any_of(",")); This returns 2 elements in 1.32.0 and 3 elements in 1.33.0. Was this changed intentionally? It does seem to make more sense to return 3 elements, but it currently breaks my program. -Dave

Jeff, Thanks for mentioning that. I am a bit weird in that I *do* RTFM. While the Boost documentation has a very professional look, I have found in a number of different libraries that the information seems disjoint. It is often difficult to figure out how to do any one thing without reading and comparing a bunch of different pages. For example, you build Boost with bjam, but try to find one listing of what the command line arguments are to bjam. Merrill

Unit Test problem with wstrings

I am using the Boost Unit Test library and have code that uses the BOOST_CHECK_EQUAL macro with std::wstring instances. I get a compilation error when I do this because there is no operator<< defined for a narrow ostream and a wide string. So, I created one as shown below, but I am still getting the exact same compilation error (using MSVC 2003). With my new operators, I am able to manually insert wide strings into a narrow ostream, but the BOOST_CHECK_EQUAL macro expansion still doesn't seem to be picking it up. Any ideas? Boost and fastcall

Hi. I'm trying to integrate two applications. The first is configured to use fastcall and the other is using cdecl... The thing is that I get linking errors which says that boost uses thiscall? eh. However, i can change the other application to use fastcall too, but when i try to link the integrated application it says as i mentioned earlier that boost uses thiscall. Robert, The std::numeric_limits class template has functions for this. I have used the following definition in my code: #ifndef NAN /** * Double-precision not-a-number. Some systems don't have the * C99-standard macro @p NAN defined. GNU gcc does as an extension, * but MSVC doesn't. */ # define NAN std::numeric_limits<double>::quiet_NaN() #endif I don't think serializing signaling NaNs makes any sense, so I suggest using the quiet version. The difference is that computing anything with quiet NaN produces a quiet NaN, whereas signaling NaN raises a FP exception. Furthermore, the result of computation with sNaN is not very well defined. I'd like to add one to your count of NaN users. I'm using it in many occasions, typically indicating an "undefined" or "not applicable" situation. Due to the aforementioned property, it is easy to track back calculation errors if undefined values are involved. (Just find the first non-NaN intermediate result.) Saving "I haven't yet defined the value of this formula" with a NaN makes sense to me. [filesystem]Sorting based on equivalence information?

Hi all, I have written a class around the glob_iterator class that W. Richard Johnson put into the file vault last year. My class finds all the paths and/or files matching a multi-level wildcard pattern. (i.e. the matching expressions may appear in more than one place, such as "/Users/*/MySource/??foo/*.cpp") I need to detect loops caused by links between directories, and I also want to detect multiple paths to the same file, and only keep one of them. The only method that I have come up with so far is to keep the paths that I have found in a collection and test each new path against all of them by calling equivalent() once for each collection member. Needless to say, this is a little slow when the number of files or directories becomes large. It could be faster if I only tested symlinks, but I think that the existence of hard links forces me to test everything. My first question: Can anyone suggest a better method of achieving the duplicates detection? My second question (This is probably directed at Beman Dawes): I read the code for equivalent(), and it seems like I could derive a class from path that would implement operator< in such a way that it sorted by the equivalence information, rather than by the path string. If I could sort the paths by their equivalence information, then I could binary search the collection when I look for duplicates. I would have to copy the code in equivalent(), which is an ugly thing to do, and I guess I would need to define all of the operators that are defined in path, since they are not virtual. Assuming that I did these things, though, does this sound like it's even valid? From the comments that I read in the equivalent() source, it seems that the file equivalence information can change, at least on a windows system. I guess I could create a handle_wrapper for each path that I add to the collection in order to keep the file from being moved while it's in the collection. Of course, I can't be the first person who has gone down this path, or the library would probably already support this sort of sorting. Is this just a stupid idea? Thanks, Rush

problem using stream class when calling read function

Hi, I have a problem when using stream class from iostreams library. I have created a device class say GDevice using iostreams::device_tag and iostreams::input_seekable tag. In GDevice I 've declared and implemented read function inside GDevice class. I also create a stream class let's say GStream which derived from iostreams::stream<GDevice>. The problem was occured when I created object from GStream and call GStream's read function directly to read say n bytes data. The GStream's read function invoked GDevice's read function not in n bytes data but always in 4096 bits. I dont understand where this number came from. At the moment, I have replaced that with &array[0][0] to avoid the warning, but if possible I would like to go with the more reliable iterator interface in the future. Hi all! I have an application which uses STLport 5.0.0, libtorrent (which in turn uses Boost). What I have done is that I have compiled the boost libraries for msvc7.1-stlport. I only uses three, i.e. filesystem, date_time and thread. My boost version is 1.33.1 So the problem occurs when my application is linking. Then I get a lot of LNK2005 link errors. I have no problems with compiling my code and use the boost libraries it's only when I'm about to link it fails. The errors says, in general, that a lot of things already are defined in libboost_xxx_mt-sp... intrusive_ptr feature request for constructor

Hi. intrusive_ptr's constructor takes an bool to signal whether the refcount should be initially incremented or not. The default is true. I find that the default is different for different types, so I propose to add a hook to specify the policy for each type. At first I thought to do this with traits, but now I think a function is better because this doesn't need to be compile-time and a function overload works fine with ADL. I'm no expert in this, so maybe I'm mistaken somewhere. There seems to be some considerable overlaps in functionality between boost::lexical_cast and boost::format, yet, as far as I can tell, the documentation pages for each does not mention the other. Hi, I am using Boost.Serialization to serialize a std::map<std::string, double>. It works fine, except that the precision on the double is not enough for my application. Is it possible to manipulate the precision used when serializing/deserializing double's within an STL container? I can trick the compiler by doing a cast like: std::list<CSomething>::iterator iter = ((std::list<CSomething>)listbin[x][y][z]).begin(); but this seems to poop out at runtime. [serialization] Incorrect assertion in basic_binary_oprimitive?

I've run into a situation where I'm triggering an assertion at basic_binary_oprimitive::save_binary(). This is on basic_binary_oprimitive.hpp, line 115 in version 1.32. This assertion seems to be claiming that an output stream will always be in a "good" state after a call to write(). On it's face, I think there's no way to safely make that claim, especially about a stream whose type is a template parameter. In fact, as I understand it, good()'s whole purpose is to let you know that the stream is busted. Am I misunderstanding something, or should that assert be changed to an exception? I'm trying to get an example program that demonstrates this problem. Currently, the code that exercises it is big and hairy, and I haven't pared down the precise conditions that cause it to happen. In the Serialization tutorial, and example is given of the "intrusive" method that looks like this: private: friend class boost::serialization::access; template<class Archive> void serialize(Archive& ar, const unsigned int version) { ar& var1; ar& var2; ar& var3; } There is full namespace qualification on "access" but nothing on "serialize()". It appears that serialize() would be in whatever the prevailing application namespace is (which might not be std). Later in the tutorial there is an example of the "non-intrusive" method that looks like this" namespace boost { namespace serialization { template<class Archive> void serialize(Archive& ar, const unsigned int version) { ar& var1; ar& var2; ar& var3; } }//serialization }//boost which implies that serialize() *DOES* need to be namespace qualified. Deploying Boost App: Best Practices?

I am building an open source C++ application using various Boost libraries. I am using the libraries as-is without any tweaks, additions, or wrappers to the source or headers. What is the accepted way (if there is one) of deploying a Boost application when the application includes the source under an open source license? Should I distribute only *my* source along with instructions to users who want to compile it to download the Boost libraries? Or, should I include a boost/ subdirectory in my source tree with the Boost headers and libraries my app uses? Merrill

filesystem::equivalent does not work for UNC paths on Windows

Hello! Its seems as if the Windows implementation of filesystem::equivalent can't handle UNC paths. While Windows is usually quite tolerant concerning the path separator / versus \, CreateFile* seems not to understand an UNC path containing // instead of \\. Hi all, I have been using the boost filesystem library for a little while under NetBSD and all is fine however I have just been porting our application over to windows and have come across a problem with the boost filesystem library (Boost 1.33.0). I am compiling with MinGW (g++ 3.4.2) on a Windows XP system. When debugging our application in gdb i get a SIGTRAP with an Invalid Address specified to RtlFreeHeap. This is when using the path::native_file_string() method. I also have another problem where a SEGFAULT ocurrs when using the boost::filesystem::exists() method, however i think that may be linked to the native_file_string() error. I started compiling that but there are a few changes i need to make to the build system to go to 1_33_1 that may be time consuming for a problem that may not yet have been addressed anyway. The introduction to the library states the requirement that serialization written by one machine must be readable by a different machine. bidirectional file_descriptor

Hello, I am currently trying to use the iostreams lib with standard BSD socket() file descriptors. If I understand correctly, I need a "bidirectional" stream buffer, so I tried overriding the mode like this: stream_buffer<file_descriptor, std::char_traits<file_descriptor::char_type>, std::allocator<file_descriptor::char_type>, boost::iostreams::bidirectional> But I cannot instantiate this because a static assertion fails. I assume this happens because the file_descriptor class is defined to be seekable (which a TCP socket is not), so what is the best way to do this? Thanks for your help ... I have just "demo_xml" serialisation test with "StdAfx.h" precompilated header. VC7.1 reply : nafxcwd.lib(afxmem.obj) : error LNK2005: "void * __cdecl operator new(unsigned int)" (??2@YAPAXI@Z) déjà défini(e) dans libcpmtd.lib(newop.obj) It seems that boost libs is defining new operator as nafxcwd.lib from microsoft. Does anyone succeed to use boost libs with "stdafx" libs ? Joel.

boost1.33.0 on IA64 thread problem

I'm working on porting a large project to IA64. Therefore I'd like to use the boost thread package on IA64 using gcc 3.2.3 (standard compiler on the SL 3 Linux distribution). There are some problems which I describe below and at the end of the mail I pose my questions. Thanks for any comments ! To test I use the following code: #include <stdlib.h> #include <boost/thread/mutex.hpp> int main() { boost::mutex mut; return 0; } I downloaded boost 1.33.0 & build & install it. When I try to compile it with g++ -g -O2 -pthread -I/opt/boostTest/include/boost-1_33 -L/opt/boostTest/lib -lboost_filesystem-gcc-mt -lboost_thread-gcc-mt -lpthread -lboost_regex-gcc-mt prog.c I get In file included from /opt/boostTest/include/boost-1_33/boost/thread/detail/config.hpp:18, from /opt/boostTest/include/boost-1_33/boost/thread/mutex.hpp:15, from prog.c:2: /opt/boostTest/include/boost-1_33/boost/config/requires_threads.hpp:47:5: #error "Compiler threading support is not turned on. Thread support works by applying the patch and using "-DBOOST_HAS_THREADS". What is the status of boost 1.33.0 concerning IA64 ? I guess the patch has not been incorporated into the boost distribution ? On IA32 I can compile and use boost 1.33.0 threads using gcc3.2.3 without using "-DBOOST_HAS_THREADS". Why is this the case ? Ideally I would like to use the same compiler flags to compile a project using boost on IA32 and IA64. For some reasons I'd prefer to use boost 1.32.0 on IA64 but I could not get the thread package to work. Does boost 1.32.0 threads work on IA64/gcc3.2.3 ? program_options library and mingw

Hi, I try to use the program_options library in a cygwin environment by compiling my application with the -mno-cygwin -mwindows compiler flag. This flag should lead to a pure windows application. I have boost libraries version 1.33 installed(via http://cygwin.com/) I link my application against libboost_program_options-gcc-mt-s which is sufficient under Linux. However under cygwin I get an undefined reference to `_environ' linker error. I did nm /usr/lib/libc.a | grep _environ and got 00000004 B _environ 00000000 I __imp____cygwin_environ 00000000 I __nm____cygwin_environ (but my build environment[GNU Builds tools] seems to ignore the -lc flag at the linker option line) Has someone experience with this library under cygwin/mingw ? On my Windows system I installed Python 2.3 into the default directory, c:\Python23. Likewise Python 2.4 is installed in c:\Python24. The only pyconfig.h files on my system are in 'include' subdirectories of those two directories. They don't seem to be in compiler-dependent locations, and those 'include' subdirs ARE where 300+ other Python header files live. It's worth noting that we build the Boost libraries we use as MSVC 7.1 projects. Hello, I am using Microsoft Development Environment 2002. I am trying to compile a Graph and use bundled properties.
