[bcp] [shared_ptr] Extracting subset of boost for shared_ptr - 3.2MB?

I extracted a subset of boost using bcp so that my project could use shared_ptr. The exact line I used is this: $ bcp --boost=/usr/include boost/shared_ptr.hpp boost/ This gave me more than just the boost headers, but any other way and it wouldn't work. It wasn't a problem though; I could just use the files in the newly-created boost/boost directory and wipe out anything else. So I was left with, presumably, all the boost headers and files that depended on shared_ptr.hpp. But, after running du, I found that the extracted directory was a whopping 3.2MB - bigger than the existing code of my project altogether. bcp had given me 274 different header files. All for just one smart pointer class? Is this correct? Am I using bcp correctly? Are there some paths that bcp is taking that aren't really neccessary? Can I narrow this huge vat of files down to the ones that I *really* need, or is this it? How? Regards and thanks, -- Tyler Mandry

Boost iostreams and GCC 2.96

Hi All, Has anyone been successful in getting the boost iostreams library to work under gcc 2.96? I'm able to build the iostreams library, but I can't compile my project code which uses some iostreams objects. The compiler fails with this line of code: boost::iostreams::filtering_stream<boost::iostreams::input> fstrm_in; All I'm doing here is creating a filtering_stream object. The compiler spits out lots of garbage with "instantiated from here" messages everywhere. Here's a snippet of the garbage: /home/prisms/devBuilder/hfs/custom/include/boost/type_traits/is_convertible.hpp:128: template instantiation depth exceeds maximum of 17 (use -ftemplate-depth-NN to increase the maximum) instantiating `boost::detail::is_convertible_basic_impl<boost::iostreams::basic_null_device<char, boost::iostreams::input>::category &, boost::iostreams::input>::_m_from' /home/prisms/devBuilder/hfs/custom/include/boost/type_traits/is_convertible.hpp:128: instantiated from ....... boost::iostreams::detail::chain_base<boost::iostreams::chain<boost::iostreams::input, char, boost::iostreams::detail::char_traits, allocator<char> >, char, boost::iostreams::detail::char_traits, allocator<char>, boost::iostreams::input>::chain_impl]' IMG_FileGZip.C:138: instantiated from here ....... IMG_FileGZip.C is my project file with line 138 being the line I mentioned above. I've checked boost documentation and the boost users mailing list but haven't found anything mentioning iostreams being incompatible with gcc 2.96. Hi, I have a problem with Boost.Python, mingw and bjam not working together, and apparently it is jam that is the issue - or rather, it's rules. The root of the problem seems to be that initmodule function doesn't get exported and I have absolutely no idea what causes this (and even if I had, I propably wouldn't know how to fix it, jam is pretty much dark magic for me :)) (Warning, lots of noise follows.) member data pointer and nested bind

Hello, I've been trying to use STL alogorithms on POD struct data member without writing any user defined functor nor adding get/set member function to the POD sturct, instead I just wanted to use boost::mem_fn, boost::bind, boost::lambda for member data pointer. It was fine to use the member data pointer with any of boost::mem_fn, boost::bind and boost::lambda only until I tried to use them in the nested bind as an argument of outter bind. If I use them in nested bind, I got compile error message of "cannot convert parameter 1 from 'boost::_bi::bind_t<R,F,L> ' to 'const RECT *'" or "cannot convert parameter 1 from 'boost::lambda::lambda_functor<T>' to 'const RECT *'" As a boost newbie, it is too difficult for me to figure out the problem here. I get the correct value for the maxflow as the return value for the function, however, the residual capacities are really weird: the maxflow goes through cycles, and even when I have a maxflow with a value=1, I get some links with capacity=2 fully loaded to capacity... Is this normal behavior? If so, is there a way of getting the correct residual capacities without cycles? If not, is this a know bug? Is there a work around? Meta Template Programming with MPL - Compiler Bug or is the code really so evil slow?

Hi, I've written a little Meta Template Program which should calculate the first 3 perfect numbers. ( range 1 - 500 ) The code is compilable if you use the range 1 - 30 really fast and works correctly. But I've tried to compile the code but I can't get it finished. Someone tried it on a Machine with 40 GB RAM and it now compiles for more than 12 hours and uses more than 7.1 GB RAM ( the compilation ) I've tried it by myself with g++ 3.4.x and g++ 4.0.x and with VC++ 7.1 The code works on all tested compilers if the range would be 1 - 30 but If the range is 1 - 500 VC++ says: d:\boost\vc71\include\boost-1_33_1\boost\mpl\aux_\preprocessed\plain\apply_wrap.hpp(48): fatal error C1204: compiler limit: internal structure overflow. ( This seems to be a known bug in VC++ http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;883655 ) and g++ compiles and compiles and uses more and more RAM. Is the code really so evil slow or is it a compiler Bug in g++? Maybe anyone has an answer. [Nat] That was my reaction as soon as I first saw John's post "bcp isn't smart enough...": wow, he could use Wave! But I'm confused as to why you'd need the graph library? Wouldn't it work just to point bcp to the compiler of interest -- by giving it the name of one of a set of small prepackaged files that #defines the vendor-specific compiler-predefined macros that Boost cares about -- and let bcp operate on post-Wave, fully-preprocessed source code? Ah: that would actually discard the identities of all the #included files! Sigh. Nonetheless, it feels as if that approach could be tweaked to get much closer to the "I only care about this one compiler" use case than is currently possible.

But the reason I suggested capturing a compiler's typical #defines in a config file was to enable a user to create a custom one containing their own #defines as well. Heh, the custom config file wouldn't need to *clone* the generic one packaged with bcp: it could #include the generic one and then add to it.

Apologies for the tardy response. I read the list very infrequently via web archives and I have only just noticed the message. So you ask: I am going to be trying to write some new "getting started" documentation for Boost for the upcoming release. I would really like to include some information about what people can expect when they get Boost packages from their Debian, RedHat, whatever distribution. All of our documentation so far is written from the perspective that users have a complete Boost CVS tree, but I guess that's not true for everyone? Can you fill us in? The short answer is: someone wishing to develop code using Boost under Debian need install the package libboost-dev (and, possibly, other -dev packages like libboost-filesystem-dev). The headers as well as static and shared library files are all installed into standard linux locations. Compilation and linking is done with no special options other than specifying the library; e.g. "-lboost_filesystem". Our goal is to make the Debian Boost library packages as much like standard libraries as possible. For Debian, this means that headers and link-time library files are contained in a "-dev" package. In addition, for each library that builds a shared object, we have a separate, versioned package, e.g. "libboost-filesystem1.33.1". Normally, however, one isn't concerned with the library package because the "-dev" package depends on the shared library package and installing the former automatically brings in the latter. The list of all -dev packages can be obtained by looking at what libboost-dev suggests with standard Debian tools like "aptitude" or "apt-cache". The "-dev" package contains the "release" build with both single- and multi-threaded versions, in both static and shared flavours for a total of 4 libraries. So the developer may choose to link using "-llibboost_filesystem-gcc-1_33_1" or " "-llibboost_filesystem-gcc-mt-1_33_1", shared or static. I see many compilation problems here in the list, so I hope you will forgive me adding to the clutter. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong or missing to get the following. When building Boost 1.33.0, the date_time, program_options and wave libraries fail to build. I am after the program_options in particular. My environment is intel_win32 running in the MSVC v6 IDE. Hi, if I call boost::bind it creates a function object, is that correct? So how can I give this function object a name? That is, presumably I can have an expression like: SomeTypeHere myFunc = boost::bind(...); But what should SomeTypeHere actually be? I've found I can use boost::function but would rather not for performance reasons. Any other options? Thanks, David

Hello everyone, The formal review of Ion Gaztañaga's Shmem library ended yesterday. I am pleased to announce that it was accepted into Boost! This library clearly generated a lot of interest from people since we got quite a few reviews. All of them were positive. During the discussion, some weaknesses in the library were found, and Ion has agreed to correct them. These include: - Improvements to the documentation and example code. - Clearer documentation on which header files to include for which objects. - Removing the 2-phase construction mechanism and replacing them with RAII-only constructors. - Adding !is_polymorphic static asserts when inserting an object into shared memory. Several difficult issues were raised during the review that will not be solved immediately. These include: - Security information about the shared memory object is currently avoided. - The synchronization objects have some weaknesses. Some of these weaknesses are related to the same weaknesses in Boost.Threads. - Memory mapped file regions are not separate from memory mapped files in the current implementation. - Multi-segment shared memory that would allow the shared memory object to grow. Perhaps these issues could be dealt with in a future version. Thank you, everyone, for the reviews and discussions about Shmem. Hi, I am had sime difficulties using the johnson_all_pairs_shortest_path algorithm. I have a custom weight type called CostType. I tried calling the algorithm as follows. johnson_all_pairs_shortest_paths(g, D, distance_inf(CostType::infinity())); The result was a distance matrix with all zeros. The problem is the following lines from johnson_all_pairs_shortest_path.hpp DT inf = (std::numeric_limits<DT>::max)(); for (tie(v, v_end) = vertices(g2); v != v_end; ++v) d[*v] = inf; If I specialized the numerical-limits class for CostType everything started to work as expected. namespace std { template<> class numeric_limits<CostType> { public: inline static CostType min() throw() { return -CostType::infinity();} inline static CostType max() throw() { return CostType::infinity(); } }; } Even if this is the good way to solve the problem, it doesn't work for what I want to do. I do not think the bug is due to something that is not handled in the stream, since I do not have any special characters or stuff like that (except end lines). Plus, the fact that it crashes at the magical number 512 characters get me to think it is more related to a buffer problem, however, you are the specialist. How can I investigate the code conversion facets used by text archive? I am not familiar at all with locales, or facets, but if you give me some hints about how they are used in the BSL, I may get started. [lambda] typeid & abstract base class

Hi all. I want to make function comparing two typeid's 'const T&'s , but in context I have only two T* pointers. T is abstract class having pure virtual functions. typeid operator takes reference, not pointer. If I use * operator on placeholder (ll_typeid(*_1)==ll_typeid(*_2)) - compiler complains that it could not instantiate T somewhere in some complex template. I also tried to use ll_static_cast in expression, but it didn't help. I don't attach those error messages, but anyway why should T be instantiated to construct L-expression with *(T*)? The following code does not successfully compile: boost::ptr_map<int,int> testmap; testmap.erase(5); The compiler (MSVC 7.1) complains that the identifier "find" is unknown inside the erase function (see below). The class does have a find function as "testmap.find(5)" compiles as expected. I expect it's a mismatch with the embedded classes. I ported my existing Hash and order list to multi_index_container. which is working quite expected? a pure vanila hash_index with ordered_index I am facing some problem in fine tuning the hash_index which is slower compared to my previous implementation. I am looking for different ways how can i fine tune the hash_index in multi_index_container? specifically i am yet to discover, How can i set the bucket size for the hash container? How can configure the container for maximum store it can reserve for me in one shot? any other optimization parameter. If any one has some idea. Asymmetrical predicates in STL algorithms

I only stumbled to this problem recently, after happily using the patently unportable solution for years (with numerous versions of STL to boot). Let's say we have a sorted vector of complex objects with a fairly simple key, and want to do lower_bound() on just a key, not a specially constructed instance of the whole object. It turns out that: bool less( const Object&, const Key& ); lower_bound( v.begin(), v.end(), Key(something), ptr_fun(less) ); is expressly prohibited by the SGI STL specifications and not quite allowed, even though not quite prohibited either, by the ISO standard (unless my standardese grew rusty again). It also turns out that there are STLs where it won't work (e.g. the new Plauger's STL shipped with VStudio 2005 release, but not beta 2...). Now, this: struct less { bool operator()( const Object&, const Key& ) const; bool operator()( const Key&, const Object& ) const; }; lower_bound( v.begin(), v.end(), Key(something), less() ); should work everywhere, or so I think. Would be nice to be able to create such an adaptor for a pair of functions (or a pair of bind or lambda expressions for that matter). I blogged a simple solution (for functions only) here http://swsw.motovilov.net/weblogs/swsw/archives/2006/02/asymmetrical_pr.html but am wondering if perhaps I missed a generic solution in one of the Boost libraries, or there's one coming in the new release? Before I jump off and re-invent the wheel -- is there a boost library to help with manipulating hardware registers? What I'm hoping to come up with (somehow) is something like: class dev_registers { reg<uint32_t> reg0; bit<reg0, 0> b0; bit<reg0, 1> b1; reg<uint32_t> reg1; bit<reg1, 0> b3; bit<reg1, 1> b4; }; (The 0 and 1 are bit offsets. Integer masks like 0x0010 would work as well) The result would be a private members of type uint32_t called reg0, and reg1 (actually they can be called anything since they are private). And a set of public methods to set, clear, and test the bits. e.g. dev_registers sample; sample.b0.set(); sample.b3.clr(); It would be nice if the registers had a global clr like: sample.reg0.clr(); There are lots of alternative approaches like: sample.b0.assign(true); // set b0 to true (1) int val = sample.b0(); // test value of b0 The goal has a lot of constraints. The registers would need to be laid out properly without any extra overhead (assuming that I do not bump into normal C padding problems). It would also be nice if everything inline'd so the compiler could optimize things down to simple bit operations. Does boost have anything like that? I looked for "bit" and only found references to bitset. I also looked for "hardware" and "flag" and did not see anything. Thanks, Perry

[Graph] New user finding dijkstra's isn't returning shortest paths

In my first use of the boost library, I'm using the BGL's dijkstra_shortest_paths algorithm to try and (obviously) find the shortest path between two points. I am then iterating along the shortest path to a given node to find the total path weight along that path. I compare this value to the path weight along a manhattan path, and find that the manhattan path is shorter. Rather than claim this is a problem with boost (yet), I'm at first believing it's my interpretation of the library. If I've piqued your interest, feel encouraged to read on. My graph is a representation of a 2-dimensional mesh, so I've got an NxN graph, where the vast majority of nodes have out-edges in all four directions (N,S,E,W), and in-edges in all four directions. I generate the graph with the following: typedef adjacency_list < listS, vecS, undirectedS, no_property, property < edge_weight_t, double > > graph_t; graph_t gGraph(num_nodes); then iterating over each node (i) and adding edges as follows: add_edge(i, easterlydest, easterlyweight, gGraph); finally, I call: dijkstra_shortest_paths(gGraph,sourcenum,predecessor_map(&p [0]).distance_map(&d[0])); to evaluate the shortest paths. (Note that much of this is a cut-and- paste from the Dijkstra_shortest_path example found at http:// www.boost.org/libs/graph/example/dijkstra-example.cpp ) Note also that my understanding of the last argument to dijkstra_shortest_paths is probably my weakest part of understanding the library. I then iterate along a given shortest path by using the following loop structure: while(node != sourcenum) // iterate from dest to source, summing as you go { int u = p[node]; int v = node; graph_traits < graph_t >::edge_descriptor e = edge(u,v,graph).first; double this_weight = get(edge_weight,graph,e); path_length += this_weight; node = p[node]; } This returns a value of 1309.16 as the total path weight. I then attempt to determine the manhattan path weights as well, to compare how much of an improvement the shortest path is to the manhattan paths. I attempt to traverse the manhattan paths using a similar approach, with something similar to the following (irrelevant lines omitted): while(node != destnode) // iterate from source to dest, iterating as you go { int nextnode = get_nextnode(xfirst,node); // gets index of next node in an x-first y-next manhattan path int u = node; int v = nextnode; graph_traits < graph_t >::edge_descriptor e = edge(u,v,graph).first; double this_weight = get(edge_weight,graph,e); xfpath_length += this_weight; node = nextnode; } When this runs, I get a path length of 1299.79, a value more than 0.1% smaller. Either I'm determining the manhattan and shortest path weights incorrectly, or it's not actually finding the shortest path. So I did a bit of debugging (as programmers are wont to do). Tracing the paths themselves, I eventually find that at one point, the shortest path (hereafter abbreviated DSP) chooses to follow an out- edge that doesn't have minimum weight. This is perfectly reasonable, as it's possible (and probable) that this choice made now, will have greater returns later, allowing an overall shorter path. However, it never again returns to even equality with the manhattan path - the manhattan path is shorter along the entire length, to the end. I've checked my corner cases, and the paths are only being summed along relevant edges (no off-by-one errors that I can see, at least). If anyone has any ideas on how I might best debug/change my code, or a means by which I can perform some other test, I'd love to hear it. If anyone needs any more information, the code is by no means confidential (though a bit messy) and I've got both .dot (graphviz) format and an svg representation of the graph available. [TR1] Where is the TR1 library?

Google found me a 12 October 2005 posting by Beman Dawes to this newsgroup stating that John Maddock's TR1 library has been accepted by Boost. But if I search for TR1 at http://boost.org/libs/libraries.htm, I don't find the library. Searching more generally yields lots of hits at www.boost.org/regression-logs/ (e.g., http://www.boost.org/regression-logs/cs-win32_metacomm/doc/html/boost_tr1.h…) and this suggests that just because a library has been accepted by Boost doesn't mean it will show up in the list at http://boost.org/libs/libraries.htm. Can somebody please explain to me what are probably the basics of what it means to be "in" Boost, how that interacts with the list of Boost libraries at boost.org, and what the significance of the regression-logs directory is? If this is explained somewhere at Boost, just point me to the page. Thanks, Scott

boost::test: expected error leads to failure - why?

When using the boost::test unit-test framework calls like boost::unit_test::test_suite* test = BOOST_TEST_SUITE( "Testing Something" ); test->add(BOOST_TEST_CASE(&test_function_with_expected_error), 1); lead to an error in return code when used together with VC7 as a post-build step Of course I could use runtime argument "--result_code=no", but then how can I make a difference between expected and unexpected errors? It makes sense to me to have expected errors in a testsuite, and especially to declare a test failure when an expected error does not appear. Could you please explain how boost::test supports this without having to write "failure-tests" myself? Markus

The books tell me to prefer const to #defines -- but where do you put them to have the right scope and not take up space in the object? What I'd like to have is: class register { void set_mask() { reg |= mask; } private: uint64_t reg; const uint64_t mask = 0x12345678; }; But the compiler will not let me do this and even if it did,the mask would take up physical space. I don't want mask (or reg) to be visable outside of the class and I want the compiler to use mask as a compile time constant that does not consume space after the compile. I'm not sure how to go about placing a breakpoint in the extended_type_info.cpp file. Boost was built on another computer and I only have access to the header files and lib/dlls. I did place a breakpoint in the destructor of the class being serialized (in addition to cout messages since the server is currently a console app). The destructor is NOT getting called during the archive process. In addition, I changed the signature of the method to take only a const value of the class (instead of reference) and the error still happens. Hi, I am trying to calculate all pairs longest path withous any success using floyd-warshall in this way. floyd_warshall_all_pairs_shortest_paths(g, D, distance_compare(std::greater<int>()).distance_inf(std::numeric_limits<int>::min())); The problem seems to be the test within the three loops of floyd_warshall_dispatch. This function selects the minimum value using std::min instead of the maximal that would have been selected if the test had been implemented using compare. Is this a bug, or shouldn't it be possible to use the function like this? I have also found a problem in example/min_max_paths.cpp. The example tries to calculate the longest path in a graph with cycles of positive weight. Thanks, Peter

Member function as a thread function

Hi, I've had a good search on the mailing list and while some posts have got close to my problem and given me a few glues, my code does't quite work the way I want it to. My goal is to have a (non-static) class member function run in a child thread + passing a parameter to it. The code I've got at the moment goes something like this: void MyClass::spawn_threads() { for ( int ii = 0; ii < num_threads; ++ii) { threadGroup.create_thread( boost::bind( ChildThreadFunc, _1, ii)); } } void MyClass::ChildThreadFunc( int &threadNumber) { // Does some work } I get the following error on the create_thread line: error: no matching function call to bind(<unknown type>, boost::arg<1>&, int&) cadiates are: .... boost:bind(F, A1, A2)[ with F= void (MyClass::*)(int&), A1=boost:arg<1>, A2=int] I'm confused by the <unknown type> business. I'm developing a client/server application using asio for communication and boost::serialization as the means to stream the objects between the two applications. This is on Windows XP with Microsoft Visual Studio 7.1. newbie question on preferred method to use shared_ptrs

Hi, I often have to "fight" with my C++ code and I must be missing a basic design characteristic of C++. Suppose there is a shared_ptr that has already been created. I now want to create an object with new and "give" it to shared_ptr to manage. I tend to do this: std::tr1::shared_ptr<int> dog; int fun(void) { int *temp = new int; dog = temp; // ... } This does not work. I've discovered two ways to achieve (I think) what I'm looking for: int fun(void) { std::tr1::shared_ptr<int> temp(new int); dog = temp; // ... } or ... int fun(void) { foo *temp = new int; dog.reset(temp); // ... } The first has the extra overhead of creating a second shared_ptr. The second worries me... It just seems like "reset" is not what I would call the method to do what I want to do (but maybe it is). Anyone care to help me out here? Thanks, Perry

How can I use boost:bind library to bind to constructor of a class. using filtering_istream for decompression

Hi, I'm trying to use a filtering istream with a gzip decompressor attached. I've got it all working but the one part that I am having trouble with is figuring out the most effective way of consuming the decompressed data. I'd like to be able to get hold of all the decompressed data in one go, rather than reading out a word at a time using the >> operator. It seems to me that the most logical way of doing it, given what I have read about the way streams work, would be to use rdbuf() to get the streambuffer and then send that to a stringstream. However when I try this the filtering_istream throws an exception of type boost::iostreams::gzip_error. I do know however that the data integrity is fine since I am able to use >> to push data into a std::string. Instinctively I realise that the filtering_istream doesn't have an internal buffer as such and using the >> operator pulls data from the source, through the decompressor and into the type on the right hand side. This leaves me confused as to what the best way of getting the data out is if I can't use the filtering_istream as a typical stream inheriting from basic_istream. I think that perhaps I'm misunderstanding a fundamental principle of how to use the filtering_istream and I'm hoping that someone on the list can point me in the right direction of how I should achieve a read of all the decompressed data. So does anyone have any idea how I should proceed? I've included the code I have thus far below. Serialization Build Issues

Hello everyone, I am attempting to build a single threaded static debug library of the boost serialization project, using the vc_7-1-stlport toolset. The only consideration being that the iostream library should be the native one. This has turned out to be quite a pain owing to the following reasons: 1. I could not figure out any know cmdline options to get this done. So, I hacked the stl_user_config.h and added the _STLP_NO_OWN_IOSTREAMS macro after which I start getting the compiler error "../include/iostream.h" --> No such file or directory. I was thinking that this is an issue with paths, but i do have an iostream.h inside Vc7/include. 2. The cmdline that I was using had the <threading>single option but that somehow did not work. I had to hack jam scripts to get things working but not sure if that was the only available option or am i missing something. I am using bjam 3.1.0. Any help appreciated. -- Regards, Arpan

Dunno about G++. We're forced to use xlC at work. All I can say is some of the libraries work, some of them don't. At least with our version. [program_options] Notifiers

How does one install a notifier for an option that does not have a value? For example, if I have an option --foo and I want to call foo_handler() when it is parsed, how do I do that? As far as I can tell from the documentation the only way to install a notifier is through a value_semantic, which doesn't apply here. -Dave

Hi there, I'm trying to port the xmlbeansxx library (sourceforge.net/projects/xmlbeansxx) under windows using "Borland C++ 5.6.4". The thing is I am having trouble with the "enable_if" construction. From the "config\compiler\borland.hpp", I know that the bcc compiler do not support SFINAE trick and so the "enable_if" and like constructions. In order to continue the port I have to modify the "enable_if" implementation with something equivalent. Building Boost 1.31.1 on OpenBSD

Hi, I've been trying to compile Boost on OpenBSD 3.8 with no success, but I would like to have the threading library available. I've gone through the list a few times, and the only thing related to OpenBSD was posted back in '02 or '03. I compiled GCC 3.4.4 with threads because the default compiler is not threaded and run ./configure as the docs say, but I still can't get it to work. Is there anything else I need to know to get Boost::Threads to compile properly? Thanks

[serialization] linking issues with 1.33

Hello When updating libraries from boost 1.32 to 1.33 our previous code that had no previous linking problems developed linking errors. I then attempted to compile the demo.cpp serialization code included in the boost documentation tutorial and received the same errors. I attach below the code and the error message I got. Tricky RPC code using bind()

All, I've written what I thought was a pretty clever RPC server using bind and templated functions to make server callbacks typesafe. It all resolves around this one function: class rpc_server { ... template <class A, class R> void set_handler(int prog, int vers, int proc, bool_t (*arg_fn)(XDR *, A*), bool_t (*res_fn)(XDR *, R*), function<void(A*,function<void(R*)>)> req_cb) { ... } } The idea being that you pass it the program, version, and procedure numbers, pointers to the xdr_ functions that encode/decode the argument and response types, and a function object that takes a pointer to the argument type and a callback to call with the result. It should be really nice to use, as it makes sure your callback handles the same types as the relevant encoding/decoding functions. Currently, however, I can't get it to compile. Hi All, Right now, in order to compile and link to the iostreams library with zlib/bzip2 support, I have to include the .cpp files in my project (as mentioned in the boost docs). I'm not too fond of this idea as I want to keep 3rd-party code outside of my project build. Perhaps I have missed something in the docs, but is there another way to link with the iostreams library without including the .cpp files? Apparently the library is compiled treating wchar_t as a built-in type. This applies to at least Visual Studio .Net 2003, and probably 2005. Programs that link with the program_options lib need to define /Zc:wchar_t, e.g. Project Properties -> C/C++ -> Language -> Treat wchar_t as Built-in Type -> Yes --John Gardner

I can't seem to get bjam v2 to build multiple library versions. Then I copied bjam to /home/dick/bin. Deadlock issue with boost::condition

I'm having a deadlock problem with boost::condition variables and I'm not sure if I'm miss using condition variables or if condition variables aren't the right tool for the job. The basic problem appears to be that the thread calling notify_all (lets call it thread1) calls notify_all before the thread calling wait (lets call it thread2) calls wait. The result is thread2 waits forever for the notify that thread1 already sent. To further complicate the matter thread1 can't call notify_all again until it has been signaled to run (via a different condition variable) which is signaled by thread2. Does this make sense? Here's some pseudo code for what I'm doing. Thread1() //Worker thread { while(1) { DoSomeStuff(); condition1.notify_all() scoped_lock l(mutex2); condition2.wait(l); } } Thread2() //Master thread. { while(1) { scoped_lock l(mutex1); condition1.wait(l) DoSomeOtherStuff(); condition2.notify_all(); } } StartMulitThreadedTask() { startThread( thread2 ); Sleep( 2000 ) startThread( thread1 ); } Here is a little time line of what I think is happening thread2 locks mutex1 thread2 calls wait on condition1 thread1 calls DoSomeStuff thread1 calls notify_all on condition1 thread1 locks mutex2 thread1 calls wait on condition2 thread2 calls DoSomeOtherStuff thread2 calls notify_all on condition2 thread1 calls DoSomeStuff thread1 calls notify_all on condition1 thread1 locks mutex2 thread1 calls wait on condition1 thread2 locks mutex1 thread2 calls wait on condition1 DEADLOCK OCCURS I've done this sort of thing with plain old binary mutexes or single count semaphores and I can go back to that but it really seemed like boost::conditions simplified things a bit and should be right choice except for this one problem. Is there something I can do to make boost::conditions work in this case? Should I be doing additional or different locking of mutex1 and mutex2? do I need yet another mutex? Thanks Matt S.

BGL memory inefficient/hog problem

Hi, I'm switching from a home-grown graph library to BGL (for creating control flow graphs and callgraphs of program binaries). I must not be using BGL correctly because I keep running out of memory (I'm running FC4 with 1GB). For example, given the following simple program: int main(int argc, char *argv[]) { // create a typedef for the Graph type typedef adjacency_list<vecS, vecS, bidirectionalS> Graph; unsigned int *array; array = new unsigned int[50]; unsigned int i; for(i = 0; i < 50; i++){ array[i] = i + 0x8000000; } // writing out the edges in the graph Graph g; for(i = 0; i < 50; i++){ add_edge(array[i % 50], array[ (i+1) % 50], g); } } And the error I get is: [dbrumley@localhost ~/tmp]$ ./a.out terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::bad_alloc' what(): St9bad_alloc Abort which is caused by new/new[] throwing an exception on the add_edge line. What am I doing wrong here? I would like to index each node in the graph by its address, which is in the range 0x8000000-0xffffffff. (I would rather not keep a separate index in the range 0-num(verticies)). Thanks, David

Hi, I was wondering why any_cast doesn't return a reference (as boost::get does for boost::variant). To me, it seems to make little sense to supply a any_cast overload with argument any& in addition to const any &, for return-by-value. It also needlessly invokes T's copy ctor, which esp bad if that one throws. Not a compiler bug I don't expect - you are just asking too much. Templates require quite a bit of memory for a single instance - multiply that by the 500 you are asking for and things rapidly go downhill, which is why 30 works - you haven't hit the point at which you run out of memory (and hence require swapping which is a very slow process in comparison to memory access). In fact the multiplication factor is probably more than 500, it may go up as exponential or perhaps even factorial depending on the code James

I have compiled iostreams on Windows XP with zlib support (using my downloaded copy of zlib) and I added the various ZLIB parameters to bjam for compiling iostreams with zlib support. However, anytime I try to compile/link a program using iostreams with zlib, I get the same error message. (It's looking for a non-existent zlib library to link to, instead of the zlib library I compiled boost with).

[filestreams] Does native not work correctly in Windows?

The following line in my Windows program: boost::filesystem::path my_path(my_filename, boost::filesystem::native); converts backslashes in my_filename to forward slashes, which means than when I use boost::filesystem::exists on the result, the file is reported as not existing even though it does. I notice the comments in boost::filesystem::m_path_append(), which is called by the constructor of boost::filesystem::path, say that this is what the function does, but this contradicts the documentation. http://boost.org/libs/filesystem/doc/portability_guide.htm says, of native: Side effect: Syntax for path constructor /src/ string is implementation defined according to the path syntax rules for the operating system. Use: In path constructors, when the source is operator input or other sources which are formatted according to operating system rules. I understand this to mean that boost::filesystem::native converts the file into the format required by the OS. I certainly would not expect it to make the format wrong if it is already correct. Is there something I've overlooked here, or is this a bug, or is the documentation wrong (or just misleading)? I'm puzzled. Paul

The ninth link, "Background information page," finally gives us a teaser, claiming our productivity will increase, but we still don't know why. Only the intrepid explorer who delves into the tiny "Documentation" link on the main page will be rewarded with a catalog of functionality. In short, I think the main page, the page that should be grabbing the casual surfer's attention, should at least highlight some of the functionality the consumer can expect from boost (cross-platform serialization, anyone? How about containers done right, or a well- designed thread package?), instead of devoting real estate and reader attention to links to random unix distros. Cheers, tob

Resending due to no response since 4th Feb: It states in history.html for regex 1.33.0 that "some of the more esoteric options have now been removed, so there is the possibility that existing code may fail to compile: however equivalent functionality should still be available". I suppose bk_parens and bk_braces could be considered esoteric, but I cannot find any equivalent functionality. Is that intentional? Thanks, Keith MacDonald

[serialization] I am unable to link the serialization demo.cpp

I would like to use the boost serialization library to do checkpointing for a simulation which runs for one or more weeks. However, I have not been able to get past the "hello world" stage. I have tried to do this on both a linux machine running gcc 3.4.5 and Mac OS X using gcc 3.3. In both cases, my attempts to compile the demo.cpp program fail with long lists of undefined symbols. I will give the specifics for the Mac because this is where it will ultimately be used and because the instalation seems more standard there. The demo.cpp I am trying to compile is the one available on http://www.boost.org/libs/serialization/doc/tutorial.html The boost include files are installed in /usr/local/boost/gcc/ The libraries are installed in /usr/local/lib/ For example, here I find libboost_serialization.a and libboost_serialization.dylib. I am attempting to compile as follows: gcc \ -L/usr/local/lib/ \ -I/usr/local/include/ \ -lboost_serialization \ demo.cpp I have tried various variations on this including adding all the .a files to the list of libraries to link, and adding stdc++. I get error messages of which the following are typical ld: Undefined symbols: __ZNKSs5c_strEv __ZNKSt9basic_iosIcSt11char_traitsIcEE4failEv __ZNSaIcEC1Ev __ZNSaIcED1Ev followed by more of the same. I have no doubt there is something very simple I am failing to do, very likely something so simple no one knowledgeable would think to put it in the documentation. So I will probably feel very dumb when someone educates me about this, but I will also feel very relieved. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi All, I want to form a new graph B from an existing graph A, copying out only edges(and their all their vertices) given that an edge contains at least one of the vertices in a given list (i.e. I am going to end up with a graph with more than just the vertices in the list and their adjacency information. With some extra vertices, where an edge exists between them and vertices in the defined list.) I know I should be using filter_graph and copy_graph, but not 100% sure how. Template metaprogramming for compile-time initialization of complex types?

Hello, here is my problem: I have a complex data type, like a std::vector< std::string > and need some global constant values of this type. The type is also used non-constant throughout the program, so I do not want to use dumb types, but rather STL containers. In an ideal world, initialization of these constants would not happen at runtime, but at compile time, essentially generating a constant memory image of this type via meta-programming. The exact memory layout is compiler-dependent, of course, but the difficult, but portable part would be the programmer's interface, in particular for nested types and user-defined ones. Why do I want this? Start-up time is a big problem for larger apps, and CRT init code filling std::vectors with stuff causes lots of page faults slowing down the start. This is particularly annoying if the constant never happens to be used in that particular run. And of course it is inelegant to keep data around twice, once in dumb constant arrays, and once on the heap after the containers have been filled from these arrays. Why can't I use POD arrays for constant data instead of STL containers? Because the same data type is often used both const (for default values, to list possible choices in menus, etc.) and non-const (for user-defined values). Unifying the access would be awfully convenient. I have implemented this approach with the boost preprocessor library for MSVC 8 std::vector< integral type >, which works, but is nowhere general enough. Has anyone else made attempts in this direction? Arno

Hi all, Trying to get Boost 1.33.1 and STLport 5.0.1 to co-exist under Micro$oft Visual Studio 2005. I got them both to apparently compile and install okay, but when I attempt a Boost::Serialization test, I run into a problem: LINK : fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'libboost_serialization-vc80-mt-gdp-1_33_1.lib' >From the docs, I indeed find that the "-gdp-" library is non-existent; specifically, the 'p' for STLport is missing. Minor spurious warning message -- Very Trivial

Hi all, Using Boost 1.33.1 serialization library with Micro$oft Visual Studio 2005, I get two minor warnings while compiling the demo_xml.cpp program. They are in boost/serialization/collections_save_imp.hpp. Lines 36 and 37 in the function template save_collection are the culprit, resulting in warnings of the form: warning C4267: 'initializing' : conversion from 'size_t' to 'unsigned int', possible loss of data These are the problem lines: unsigned int count = s.size(); ar << make_nvp("count", const_cast<const unsigned int &>(count)); Changing the "unsigned int" to "size_t" fixes the warnings, like this: size_t count = s.size(); ar << make_nvp("count", const_cast<const size_t &>(count)); Trivial problem, I admit, but warnings are warnings... Boost thread library wrapper

Hello, I'm trying to compile the following: #include <boost/type_traits/is_integral> int main() { return 0; } I'm getting a long_long_type is undeclared in namespace boost error. I worked around it by: namespace boost { typedef long long long_long_type; typedef unsigned long long ulong_long_type; } #include <boost/type_traits/is_integral> int main() { return 0; } Is there a better way to fix this issue? I had a similar issue in my own software and I didn't liked the solution to fall back to manually track the array bounds. Do you develop in XCode ? I remember that while developing on XCode there is an option that does fast linking (it is called Zero Link) and if you check that, it does not really link your application at link time but only at run time. So I think this is in fact a linking problem, disable the Zero Link option under XCode and your code will probably fail to link. As to why it does not link, I do not know, which library (boost) are you trying to link to ? bcp: towards a library dependency list

I've just committed some changes to bcp that give it a shortened list option: bcp --list-short truncates the list so you just see directory names where appropriate, for example: bcp --list-short shared_ptr.hpp Gives the dependency list: boost/assert.hpp boost/checked_delete.hpp boost/config.hpp boost/config boost/current_function.hpp boost/detail boost/mpl boost/non_type.hpp boost/preprocessor boost/shared_ptr.hpp boost/static_assert.hpp boost/throw_exception.hpp boost/type.hpp boost/type_traits boost/version.hpp which is reasonably nice and compact :-) Now, here's the question: what did the folks who were asking for this functionality actually want to use the information for? I should stress that it's overkill for extracting subsets of Boost, because many libraries will depend on just one or two files inside boost/mpl or boost/preprocessor, so using the list for that purpose will result in an even "thicker" dependency than copying with bcp already produces. It's possible to contract the above list even further: for example by contracting to library names where possible, so for example contracting all of: boost/regex.hpp boost/regex libs/regex to just "regex" However there would still be a lot of Boost headers that can't automatically be assigned to any library name, so it's not clear to me how much use this would be? If folks can give me an idea of what they were looking to use a dependency list for it'll help me decide whether to stop here or to continue trying to contract the list further. John.

Unable to figure out how to get zlib support in iostreams on windows

Hi, I've posted this on the boost build forums, but never got a response, so I'm hoping someone in this group can help me. I've spent several days banging my head with iostream zlib support on windows. For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to get this to compile. This is on a windows XP machine with Microsoft VS 2003. I've installed the zlib source at C:\dev\zlib and set the appropriate command line arguments (I believe anyway) to point to it. However, it continues to give me an error of "unknown dependent target <@boost!libs!iostreams!build>libboost_zlib.lib" If I remove the zlib command line arguments, the boost library builds fine. Can anyone please explain what I'm doing wrong? I'm sure it is something simple, but I cannot figure it out. I looked at the jam file regarding this and it seems to indicate that it will compile zlib automatically. But apparently that isn't happening. The complete output from the command window follows. I already pointed this out to Robert, the correct use is on the cpp file, not the documentation. I am also using no RTTI, for me it works fine except that I have to do all sort of strange things to get the thing to link correctly without multiple definitions. Other than that it hasn't been really tested/explored extensively. After doing all this, it occurred to me that it RTTI would still be required to serialize the std::vector etc. This could be worked around by some combination of the above a) implemented BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT for those serializations in the library b) making a custom extended_type_info class which uses some other yet to be determined method. c) avoiding serialization of types not exported via pointers. That is, only types serialized via pointers required RTTI. (at least that's the intention - better test this!!)
