regex_search and match_results issue?

Hi, im having trouble with a base case for regex_search and the number of hits it finds in a haystack. I am wondering if i am not setting flags that need to be set, but i cannot find anything for this in the docs. My usage only seems to find the string "HELLO" once, as the cout indicates xcmMatch.size() is 1 after i run this. I am using boost libs 1.31.00 . Thanks! delaying destructor compile on imcomplete type

IIRC, one of boost's smart ptrs can be used with an incomplete type. How is the compile of the destructor delayed? ie ~my_smart_ptr() { get()->~T(); // error: T is an incomplete type } I wondered through lots of the shared_ptr code, but I got a bit bleary-eyed. On that note, does anyone have a script or preprocessor call or something that converts all the boost code into the 'clean and ideal boost'? ie the one without the layers and layers of compiler workarounds, etc? I think that version would be a much easier read. And maybe some day all compilers will support that version too. We can but dream... Tony

[date_time] posix_time input/output facet symmetry

I'm experiencing a problem using custom formatting of fractional seconds. const std::string date_string = "2006 Jun 01 999000 23.59.59"; const std::string format_string = "%Y %b %d %f %H.%M.%S"; When using a time_facet together with the "%f" flag, I get a correct output containing a 6-digit number in place of the fractional part. However, using a time_input_facet together with the "%f" flag, I cannot get a correct ptime from an input using the same format as the above example. The problem is twofold : 1) First, the input facet expects a leading '.' otherwise, it parses a special value and fails. [see time_facet.hpp(1035-1049)] This is not the case in an output facet. 2) Second, even if I include a leading dot, the space after the fractional seconds is not consumed, and the parsing of the remainder fails. This means that I need to add an extra space to the input format string. Boost.Signals: strange bug in example program

However, when I print the values via std::copy(first, last, std::ostream_iterator<T>(std::cout, " ")); I get "8 15 2 1 ", which means that the values are calculated correctly. This error occurs with Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 (8.0) as well as MinGW 3.4.2. I even tried replacing std::max_element() with my own function, which expectedly didn't help. Logic Error with boost::lexical_cast

Dear all, I am quite new to boost and need some help in problem that I encountered using boost. I am trying to read a .dat file to convert some of the fields to double values. The line format I am trying to read is sth like this GRID* 1086030 7.23756775373e-5.002455787667412 When I use the code it throws a logic_error, I controlled whether I am reading a valid field to convert or not and it is true. So I am using boost::lexical_cast<double>(string..) to convert that into a double value. What might be the problem to throw a logic error.(I know that it is a logic error :-) but I could not figure that out.) I would appreciate some help. Regards

[boost.multi_array] newbie question: Best use of memory - repost

Since I got no answers I'm reposting I'm currently using multi_array to represent 3D matrices of doubles, I was wondering which would be the best use since the array has to hold a very large amount of data. I' currently testing whith a multi_array of 800x800x100 to hold double or pointers to double and I have memory problems. When I declare the multi_array whith pointers to doubles I can usually go up to 775x775x100 without problems but when I try the same thing with a multi_array of doubles I get a bad alloc error. My real needs for the moment are for a multi_array of 800x600x57 but I will need bigger storage capacity in the near future, what are your sugesstions. Is the multi_array a pointer itself? [serialization] binary_iarchive performance degradation with Intel 9.0 compiler

It could be that I'm being foolish, or that there is something very strange going on in how the Boost serialization library interacts with the Intel C++ compiler that I don't understand. I'll post a short question first, eliding underlying motivations, to see if this warrants further discussion. I am running on 64-bit Linux, using the Intel C++ compiler, version 9.0, and gcc 3.4.5. I have a large, complex data structure that I am serializing. All serialize methods use the BOOST_SERIALIZATION_NVP macro. The data structure serializes and deserializes accurately for each of text, xml, and binary archives. The size on disk is about 250 megabytes, using the binary archives. The load method I use is roughly this: #include <boost/archive/binary_oarchive.hpp> #include <boost/archive/binary_iarchive.hpp> //#include <boost/archive/text_oarchive.hpp> //#include <boost/archive/text_iarchive.hpp> //#include <boost/archive/xml_oarchive.hpp> //#include <boost/archive/xml_iarchive.hpp> #include "Foo.hh" Foo* load(const string& filename) { istream ifs(filename.c_str(), ios::binary); Foo* foo = 0; boost::archive::binary_iarchive ia(ifs); ia >> BOOST_SERIALIZATION_NVP(foo); return foo; } Above this method, note the commented-out text and xml archive headers. Here is the strange part: When using the Intel compiler, and run with the text and xml archive headers commented out, the load method takes about 9.6 seconds. When I uncomment the text and xml headers, the load time almost doubles, to 18.8 seconds or so. I do not see this with gcc. So the question is: have I done something foolish here, or is this wacky? I am using the following command to compile the code: % icpc -O2 -Ob2 -ip <...> Any help appreciated. Bill

Hi, Thanks for the reply. This is what I am trying to achieve: a) Each entry in the container will have tuple containing n-elements tuple < t0, t1 ..., tn >, where n is known at run-time. This entry will also have other elements. b) Multi_index container will have a composite_key, consisting of each tuple element. As per 2) it should be possible to just have std::vector<T> as a tuple and define the composite key in terms of each element of the tuple i.e. [ tuple.at(0), ..., tuple.at(n-1) ]. Hi boost users, I have a question regarding the best use of the boost pools and shared_ptr Consider the following tree node object. class A { public: typedef boost::shared_ptr< A > SPA; typedef std::vector< SPA > SPAVec; SPAVec children; }; This class allows me to have a tree or trees where some of the nodes may be shared. E.g. // tree1 tree2 // X Z // Y Y Y X // Y Y Logically the root of tree1, X has two children Y and Y but physically of course I only have one copy of Y in memory. Other trees, e.g. tree2 can also share these branches. Now assume I'm also very often constructing and destroying nodes. An object pool is an obvious optimisation to try out. However shared_ptr would need to call object_pool::destruct() instead of delete when it really wants to destroy the object. Or singleton_pool::free() but this causes more difficulties for me because I want to control the lifetime of the pool separately for each instance of my objects which are working on these trees. Can anyone offer a nice solution to this problem? kind regards, James Swift.

random library: initializaing a generator.

Hi I am using boost/random library in order to create a normal distributed noise. I want to call my my_class::noise() functions several times, but I want to initialize the generator only once. I tried to declare and initialize the generator at the constructor of my_class, but then my_class::noise() doesn't recognized the generator. I wrote it the following way: my_class::my_class() { boost::mt19937 gen(42u); } my_class::noise() { boost::normal_distribution<float> n_d(5, 10); //n_d(mean,stdev) boost::variate_generator<boost::mt19937&, boost::normal_distribution<float> > normal(gen, n_d); return normal(); } I guess I need to declare the generator at the header, and only initialize it at the constructor, but I don't know how to do it. [serialization] boost::archive::archive_exception expected on invalid contents on GNU/Linux

Hello boost-users! I would like to report a minor (but annoying) bug in the boost::serialization library which I am using extensively in my project. The problem: trying to load serialized data from a known invalid archive does not throw a boost::archive::archive_exception but instead a normal std::exception is caught. Note: the bug seems to only affect GNU/Linux systems. The annoyance is minor since some kind of exception is caught anyway so that corrective action can be taken. At some point in my application's test suite, I test the robustness of my persistence code by feeding my Load() method a malformed buffer. If I run the test suite normally I get the expected result that is an exception happened and the program refused to corrupt its internal data structure. However, when running under Valgrind looking for leakage, I get spammed by "Conditional jump or move depends on uninitialised value(s)" messages. It appears that boost::serialization does not notice that my source stream is a malformed archive and recklessly tries to read the serialized data. As I can see in the many "load" methods from "boost/archive/impl/text_iarchive_impl.ipp" (the last method invoked before the exception occurs), the archive loader attempted to read a "size" from the malformed data and then attempted to resize its buffer to this (undefined) size, ensuing mayhem. Aren't the archive loaders supposed to check that a stream is a valid archive before deserializing? I would imagine that the boost::archive::archive_exception::invalid_archive error code is made for that purpose. Here are instructions on how to trigger the bug: a very simple boost::serialization example and the valgrind trace (compiled with -g). Here is a sample execution of the program: jp@linux ~/boost $ ./malformed-contents caught exception : basic_string::resize The compiler used was g++-4.1 on GNU/Linux (amd athlon, gentoo distribution, glibc 2.3.6). I reproduced the issue on another GNU/Linux box with an AMD 64 and g++ 3.4 and obtained the same issue. However, running the test on my ibook (Apple OSX) returned me the expected behavior : ibook:~/boost jp$ ./malformed-contents caught boost exception : invalid signature The issue seems to only affect some GNU/Linux systems. [statechart ] UML2.0 local transitions and history

I've built a small test program with the statechart library. (See below) It seems that the sequence of exit and entry actions invoked for a transition are modeled according to the UML 1.5 specification. In other words it models "external" transitions from the 2.0 spec. Is it possible, or are there any plans to extend it, to model the more useful local transitions from the 2.0 spec? Tests with deep history produce a static assertion if you attempt to transition to history of a containing state. UML 2.0 explicitly permits this. Are there any plans to modify the library to permit this? Dear All, I am pleased to announce that the Fusion compile-time/run-time hybrid heterogeneous container and algorithm library by Joel de Guzman and Dan Marsden has been accepted into Boost. The library received 7 YES votes and 0 NO votes, with one abstention. Detailed Review Comments ------------------------ The following comments refer to issues that the library authors should address prior to merging the library into CVS: * Documentation: Many of the reviewers stated that they would like to see more tutorial documentation that demonstrates not only what the particular constructs in Fusion do, but also how they are expected to be used. A reasonably concise motivating example has been requested. It has already been pointed out that Fusion is used for some other boost libraries. A well-developed and self-contained case study of when and how to use Fusion would be greatly appreciated. The relationship between this library and the current Boost.Tuple library, as well as Boost.Mpl, should be discussed. The reference documentation is quite thorough and detailed comments regarding them have already been addressed by the authors. However the notion of "views" requires greater documentation. The examples in the algorithm sections currently do little more than demonstrate the syntax by which they can be called. Examples that more specifically express intent would be a notable improvement. (see for example Matt Austern's "Generic Programming and the STL"). In general the documentation would benefit from copy-editing. * Several commented on the use of the name "pair" for the fusion type that has typedefs for two types but only contains the second type. Although the typedefs and member names are consistent with the std::pair object, the name "pair" is confusing. The compile-time/run-time hybrid nature of this library makes it difficult to find perfect metaphors for constructs in the library. In this case, it seems better to find a term for this template (and the concept that it models) that more directly states its purpose. The name "tag_of" would also benefit from renaming. * The behavior of Fusion functions in the face of argument-dependent lookup (ADL) is not well specified. This should be made explicit in the reference documentation. The following comments refer to issues that, while not mandatory, deserve consideration: * The library name "Fusion", though not arbitrary, says little about the library's purpose. There is precedent for this within boost, however. A name change is not mandatory for the library's acceptance, but it would be worth while for the authors to consider a more telling name. * The mechanism for extending Fusion with new containers and iterators is complex and involves implementing a number of components, especially regarding iterators. An adaptation layer that is analogous to the Boost.Iterator library would be a fine addition to Fusion. * It would be beneficial to supply Boost.Serialization support for the Fusion container types. I am sure, as mentioned, that the authors of this library would accept a volunteer to implement this functionality. I would like to thank all the people who reviewed the library, voted, and otherwise participated in the discussion. Hi, I'm trying to compile the boost graph library python bindings. They need Boost.Jam version 3.1.12 which I have downloaded and built from CVS. However when I run bjam I get the following error: error: no builtin module .ENVIRON is found error: your version of bjam is likely out of date error: please get a fresh version from CVS. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Perhaps this is a problem with the BGL Jamfiles? Thanks, John.

Hi, MinGW gcc 3.4.4 is an important compiler to be supported for those keeping up the open source effort on windows. Below are a couple compilation problems and solutions in case Ion doesn't find time to fix them. Hi all, I upgraded to boost 1.33.1 and I started experiencing problems with the following simple program while building with Visual Studio 2005. #include <iostream> #include <boost/date_time/posix_time/posix_time.hpp> void main() { { std::cout << boost::posix_time::second_clock::universal_time(); } std::cout << std::endl; } While printing the current time, the program crashes in Microsoft's 'xutility' header file (line 197) while trying to clean up some temporary strings created in time_facet.hpp (line 308), immediately after running boost::algorithm::replace_all(format, ss.str(), ""); I suspect the third parameter is the issue here (should it be surrounded explicitly with std::string("")?!). There are also some hints in the documentation, though I do not immediately recall where it is mentioned. (The problem is mostly due to endian mismatch and datatype size difference, if my memory is right.) What I did to counter this problem is to write a very simple subclass of binary archives and handle specifically the endian problem. The datatype size problem can be handled by serialization only types with specific size no matter on which platform, e.g. boost::int32_t, etc. Just 5 cents... Cheers, Freddie

I am currently using binary serialization on 32 bit & 64 bit machines without issue. However, passing the serialized objects between the two platform types fail. The serialized classes themselves support interoperability, and as such it appears that the serialization libraries themselves do not. I am assuming they are storing some type of meta data along with the payload? Any thoughts on how to do this and keep with binary serialization? -- John

[BGL] problem with adjacency_list and bidirectional_tag

Hi. I've noted an apparent discrepancy between the documentation of the adjacency_list class and the actual behavior: It's stated in the documentation that graph_traits<adjacency_list>::directed_category should be a typedef to "directed_tag" or "undirected_tag", depending on whether the graph is directed or not. Those are also the only possible types defined by the Graph concept. But when bidirectionalS is used as the Directed template parameter for adjacency_list, the type of the directed_category is set to "bidirectional_tag". Shouldn't this simply be set to "directed_tag", and the bidirectional information be confined to graph_traits<adjacency_list>::transversal_category? At least that's what the documentation says... I would like to know when this feature will be implemented, if somebody is working on it. I like very much the fact that Qt slot/signals are thread safe, it helps really a *lot* : "the slot is invoked when control returns to the event loop of the thread to which the object belongs. The fact is that I've been using Boost.Test mostly with its auto test case capability (I don't want to have to write code to register my test cases one by one in general, unless that's the last resort). Hi, I've read a great part of Boost.Build's documenation and taken a look i all the rest of it, but I don't quite understand of to use it to build to boost libs and arbitrary libs in general. If I have main.cpp that should be compiled to main, and uses boost::program_options, what should the Jamfile be? If it was any other lib, like POSIX threads or libbzip2, what would it be? I downloaded the .rpm version of bjam, and installed it with alien and dpkg (i use Ubuntu). I know we do not need to do things like that, but I am using code from an other team and I don't want to change it if I don't need. I think there's probably a better way: put all the concepts in a nested namespace of boost and then add a using-directive to expose them in boost... Hi, Can anyone point me in the direction of some documentation of the python bindings for the BGL? I know this is no longer part of boost. Should I be asking some other list? The documentation at http://www.osl.iu.edu/~dgregor/bgl-python/#example and http://www.osl.iu.edu/~dgregor/bgl-python/reference/boost.graph.html is helpful but far from complete. What happened to the more user friendly documentation that came with boost_1_33_1? How stable is the interface? Is the library actively maintained? After all that I'd like to say I have found the bindings very useful just a little hard to work with at first. Thanks, John.

Hi, With the parameter library is there any way to stop misuse as in; func(/*a = */1,b = 2); Fine, a is positional, b is named. func(a = 1,2); Happily compiles but probably isn't what was intended, the default value is used for the second parameter. Should positional arguments be allowed to occur after named arguments? Perusing the Parameter library docs I can't see any mention as to what should happen here. Regards, Richard. Hi, I would like to know the name of the option that causes the command line parsing to fail. I don't like the idea of having to parse the what() string to extract the option name. I think the exception classes should be extended with functions to get this information. This is useful if you want to control the appearance of the error messages. E.g. use another language than English. Hi all, I'm currently working on a game engine, and hoping to use boost serialization for the world saving code. It's nearly perfect except for one snag - serializing pointers to sprite file classes. Ideally I'd like to simply serialize the name of the sprite file, and on deserialization find the file in the sprite cache 'gallery', but this requires using split serialization in all the classes that reference sprites. Is there a way to simply override the serialization of /pointers/ to classes? Hello, yesterday I downloaded the boost installer package from boost-consulting site (http://www.boost-consulting.com/download.html) and started the installation. Everything was fine, but now I have a question: After choosing and installing the desired libraries I would like to know what should be expected as a result? I selected to install the libraries for Visual C++ 8.0, but I still had to put manually into C++ Options Dialog the directories to boost includes, libs and binaries. Shouldn't this be done by setup? I'm using deb packages from the debian linux testing distro: bjam-3.1.11-1 boost-build-2.0-m10-1 (Building bjam myself from sources gave exactly the same result) Compiling a very simple qt4 application file is no problem. Further helpful (I hope) criticism of the getting started Docs for boost 1.33.1 In http://www.boost.org/doc/html/bbv2/installation.html In the heading section entitled Chapter22 Installation, paragraph numbered 2. The second sentence reads: "Go to the Boost.Build root directory and run bjam --version. You should see: " etc It is too easy to assume this refers to the directory $(BOOST_ROOT)/build rather than $(BOOST_ROOT)/build/v2 and if you execute the command there you get a cryptic error message. I think what is referred to here as the Boost Build directory is referred to previously as the Boost Build V2 directory ( I feel however that it is quite likely to arrive here without having read that anyway). The physical location of v2 under the build directory can add to the confusion It might help to always refer to the directory explicitly as the Boost Build v2 directory. HTH regards Andy Little

[datetime] Parametrization of class datetime.

Hi! I wonder if there is any posibility to change boost::datetime result class eg. long to any bignum class eg. from GMP library or double type. It is important question for calculation distance between let's say 1900 and 2100 and using method eg. total_seconds(). There is no methods like total_minutes(), total_hours(), total_days() and so on, so if I would like to have a distance in days I have to calculate distance in seconds and recalculate it to days, but for big distances total_seconds() exceeded long ranges. boost::filesystem::filesystem_error returns wrong error code on bad path?

Hi, When I create a bad path on purpose, the error code that boost returns is: 2 other_error, // library generated error However, the exception.hpp what() returns the string: boost::filesystem::path: invalid name "testwrite1::.txt" in path: "../data/TestFileIO/testwrite1::.txt" It seems like the string from what() correctly identifies the error at a bad path name, but it is not correctly translated in the error code enumeration. Hi All - Just a quick note to let everyone know that Boost has been assigned 10 SOC projects! This is more than we expected and I'm hopeful will result in some great work. Even so, there are many excellent students and projects that applied for Boost projects and were NOT selected. The competition for these 10 slots was quite brutal. The choices were extremely difficult to make. It was often very hard to decide between a totally novel, high risk, project proposal and a fairly straight-forward extension to a current library. As you'll see, we ended up with some of both. The mentors have been trying to reach everyone with a notification one way or another, but it's a large list. All applicants should have heard from Google by now. If you have questions you can post to boost_soc2006(a)crystalclearsoftware.com and someone should get back to you. I'm not going to publicy share the details of the list just yet -- until we are sure all the administrative items are confirmed (google apparently accidently informed 1800 people they were accepted and then had to retract). Shmem timed mutex

Hi, I wonder if you can help me. I'm using the Shmem library (v0.92) and I'm trying to use a shared_timed_mutex with a scoped_timed_lock. This seems to work until the mutex is about to go out of scope. Then my program just hangs. It seems that it can not unlock the mutex. I tried issuing a "unlock" function call on the lock object and that hangs as well. Could anyone confirm if the shared_timed_mutex works at the moment. Thanks for you help. Steve.

Access violation in Boost.Format using absolute tabulations

If the format string have an absolute tabulation (%t), the basic_format::clear() method throws an access violation because of this piece code in format_implementation.hpp(138): if( bound_.size()==0 || !bound_[ items_[i].argN_ ] ) Here items_[i].argN_ can be negative (defined in internals.hpp(70)), which is an invalid index to bound_[]. I think a simple check of greather than zero would suffice to fix it. [Variant] Time complexity of apply_visitor

If I invoke apply_visitor, what is the time complexity wrt the number of types that may be in the variant? The doc doesn't seem to address this. I looked at the source code, but all I can remember before my head exploded due to exposure to the MPL and the PPL was "switch" (which suggests constant time) and "unrolling" which suggests either linear or constant time, depending on what is being unrolled. Does anybody know what the time complexity of apply_visitor is? My real question is whether applying a visitor to a variant is more efficient than a cascading series of calls to get. I know that the following runs in linear time wrt the number of types in the variant, if (T1 *p = get<T1>(&myVariant)) ... else if (T2 *p = get<T2>(&myVariant)) ... else ... else if (Tn *p = get<Tn>(&myVariant)) ... but what about this? apply_visitor(myVisitor, myVariant); Thanks for any enlightenment. It seems clear that since each dimension of a multi_array can have (I presume) extent up to numeric_limits<size_type>::max(), size_type isn't always large enough to hold the actual size of the multi_array and multi_array::size() may overflow. I have a similar problem with some of my own code, and I'd like to know how the multi_array designers approached this problem--my approach so far is to punt the problem to my users. Thanks. D.

Hello everyone I'm trying to use the boost.multi_array's iterators and came across a problem: calling end() on a certain multi_array_view only yields the same iterator, if it is called on exactly the same instance of the view. When, however, the view is created twice (using the same expression, of course), end() produces an iterator that doesn't compare to the first one. In other words: m_a[indices[index_range()][1]].end() != m_a[indices[index_range()][1]].end() I'm not sure whether this is just me, trying to use something in a way it shouldn't be used, or if this is a limitation of the multi_array library. Well marking the copy constructor as private is not required since dtor is already marked as private. You will not be able to copy construct by saying something like A *a = new A(); A a' = A(*a) //This will fail because dtor of A is private. However making the python wrapper class as boost::noncopyable works. It seems, if you do not mark the wrapper class as "noncopyable", boost python internally generates some code which requires public dtor. [regex] Static linking woes with gcc 4.0x on Fedora Core

I've been having great success with the regex library on Win32 and Linux, up until the time I decided to flip over to using all static linking. What used to be working code suddenly goes belly-up during static constructor initialization, but only when I statically link. When I use dynamic-linking, all appears to be well. I've tried the following permutations, each of which crashes, but each in a slightly different place: - Stock Fedora Core 4 install, with gcc 4.0.0 and boost 1.32 - Upgrade the above to gcc 4.0.2 - Upgrade boost to boost-1.33.1-6.i386.rpm (+boost-devel) - Build boost 1.33 from sources using gcc 4.0.2 When I started, it was dying when running static initializers inside the regex lib. I don't have the exact stack trace right now, but it looked like c_regex_traits<char>::init() was calling a null function pointer somewhere (similar to the top frame shown below). But now that I've come to the last step, it's dying during exit(), with the following backtrace---which isn't terribly helpful, I know: (gdb) backtrace Core was generated by `trquery'. Program terminated with signal 11, Segmentation fault. #0 0x00000000 in ?? () #1 0x08096f63 in __tcf_0 () #2 0x080fa5ee in exit () #3 0x08048d80 in DoQueryAll (ctl=@0xbfaf2a84, ttyname=0x0) at siquery.cpp:472 #4 0x08049826 in main (argc=1, argv=0xbfaf2ec4) at siquery.cpp:320 My DoQueryAll() is calling exit() directly, although I doubt that should make a difference. And again, this All Just Works(tm) when I dynamically link. Dynamic linking is not an option for us---if it came to that, then I'd be seriously looking at refactoring to replace boost.regex with either custom parsing or another regex lib. Besides, bjam *does* build a libboost_regex-XXX.a, presumably it's supposed to work. :-) Now I know that based on the above backtrace, this could be anything. I'm suspecting boost because of the first symptom where the backtrace is in c_regex_traits<char>::init(). So given the dearth of discussion on this category of problem, I'm guessing that perhaps this is a problem with gcc 4.x? Are there any known issues with boost.regex on gcc 4.0.x? Are they fixed in 4.1? Should I just fall back to Fedora Core 3 to get gcc 3.x? Thanks much! David Yon Tactical Software

Using the 'samples/cpp_tokens' example preprocessor with the input file: #define __glibcpp_function_requires(...) give the following error message test.C(1): error: ill formed #define directive: __glibcpp_function_requires This error was found when preprocessing the file: #include <algorithm> where the implementation of algorithm is from gcc. The error from the custom preprocessor is: PATH_TO_GCC_STL_IMPLEMENTATION/bits/concept_check.h(52): error: ill formed #define directive: __glibcpp_function_requires It is important for us to be able to preprocess this header file since we aim for gcc compatibility. Given a type of graph G such as : typedef adjacency_list < listS, listS, bidirectionalS > G; and its reverse graph type : typedef reverse_graph<G> RG How can I convert a graph RG to a graph G simply ? For instance, I would like to apply a function like : void foo(G x); to graphs of type G as well as type RG. I looked in the documentation, unsuccesfully. I tried to change the type of the function to : void foo(RG x); It worked for some functions, but not for others like : void bar(RG x) { // ... add_vertex(x); //... } The compiler complains about : 'Config::vertex_descriptor boost::add_vertex( const Config::vertex_property_type &, boost::adj_list_impl<Derived,Config,Base> &)' : expects 2 arguments - 1 provided Apparently there seems to be no default type conversion ... ? PS : I am currently using VC++ 7.1.

Using the 'samples/cpp_tokens' example preprocessor with the following code: #define true 1 #define false 0 gives the following error: test.C(1): error: ill formed preprocessor directive: #define Preprocessing the same file with 'cpp' give no error. If any of the two lines in the file is removed the other line will cause an error. I guess the error occurs because 'true' is not an T_IDENTIFIER, but a T_TRUE. All: I'm trying to run the captures example included in the Boost.Regex documentation. When running the captures example verbatim, I get: "Program received signal: "EXC_BAD_ACCESS"." This is happening on Mac OS X 10.4.6 (Intel) with Boost 1.33.1. [BGL] how does automatic vertex_index creation work?

Hi folks! I defined a customary graph type which always uses integers in a bound range to adress the vertices. It is therefore as if one would use an adjacency_list with vecS as vertex storage set. Since I want to run an algorithm requiring a vertex_index property to be present on my custom graph, I was looking at the code of the adjacency_list graph. The docs say, that somewhere in the code the vertex_index map does get created automatically if the vertex set is vecS, but where and how is it done? IBM iSeries support

I was just wondering if anyone out there has tried using any of the Boost libraies on IBM's iSeries platforms. Its one of the platforms that I have to support. I'd like to use a few of the Boost libraries, but am not sure how to proceed. My main concern is the libraries that require a binary( like Boost.Regex ). The header only libraries that I'm interested in, I've been able to use( so far at least ). [iostreams] blocking read() confusion

According to the documentation I/O Streams defines blocking I/O as: <http://www.boost.org/libs/iostreams/doc/concepts/blocking.html> > A Device is Blocking if a read request never produces fewer > characters than requested except at end-of-stream, and if a write > request never consumes fewer characters than requested under any > circumstances. So, if I issue an iostream::read() with 10 characters, and only 5 come back, this is considered non-blocking. To me, this is inconsistent with at least Unix read() semantics. As long as iostream::read() blocks for at least 1 character, it should be considered blocking, no? I don't have a copy of the C++ standard handy, but my Stroustrup book just says that iostream::read(Ch *p, streamsize n) "returns at most n char". Thus it heavily implies that reading less than "n char" is not only possible, but not an error or exceptional condition. But the book really doesn't say anything more than that. I am just curious because I am looking into using Boost Iostreams as a wrapper around some socket I/O that uses standard Unix read() semantics. I don't use the socket in non-blocking mode, but since the Unix read() may return less than "n char", do I need to write a loop that ensures exactly "n char" is read, unless an EOF occurs? Hi, The iostreams library has a basic_regex_filter that will do this job. See http://www.boost.org/libs/iostreams/doc/classes/regex_filter.html or in context http://www.boost.org/libs/iostreams/doc/index.html 4. Reference -> 4.2 Classes -> basic_regex_filter The following ctor is the one you probably want basic_regex_filter( const basic_regex<Ch, Tr, Alloc>& pattern, const formatter& replace, regex_constants::match_flag_type flags = regex_constants::match_default ); It takes a regex (and regex flags) and for each match calls the formatter function. The formatter is a boost::function1 that takes the match_results and is expected to return a string that will be used to replace the match. You will probably have to put your src/dst strings into stringstreams to use the filter. Note that the library does support a generous additional variety of sinks and sources , files, arrays, zip archives etc. Please note that I recently found a bug in basic_regex_filter in cases where no match is found. Boost Format Problem with empty strings

Hi I'm using Visual C++ 8.0 and I tried to run the following code, which seems to crash with assertion (NULL POINTER) at debug time: (boost::format( "Something %1%") % std::string()).str() It seems that it doesn't like empty strings in placeholders at all. Installing boost 1.33.1 with STLPort 5.0.2 and vc8

Hello All, For VC7.1 there is a tool set for 'normal' vc7.1 and one for vc-7_1-stlport. With my 'old' vc 7.1 things worked out fine with the STLPort version. Now I'm switching to vc8 and was wondering how to get boost to compile with STLPort instead of the standard vc8 implementation. I assume that boost will compile against MS-STL implementation if I do something like: bjam "-sTOOLS=vc-8_0" install Thanks in advance... Jón

Non-intrusive serialization on derived objects without default constructor?

I've tried to searched for this in the archive and in google, but I can't seem to find the answer. I'm having trouble using boost::serialization with its non-intrusive. In parituclar, I can't really figure out how to serialize derived classes that do not have default constructors in an non-intrusive way. class A; class B : A; class C : A; Suppose B and C do not have a default constructor. And I would like to serialize: A* b = new B(10); A* c = new C("something"); Due to the restriction of the API that I can not change, all I have is the pointer to A. I'm puzzled on how this can be done. From reading the documentation and source code, I think I need to override the load_construct_data and save_construct_data, such as: template<class Archive> inline void load_construct_data(Archive &ar, A *t, const unsigned int vers) { } template<class Archive> inline void save_construct_data(Archive &ar, A *t, const unsigned int vers) { } However, it seems like the memory is allocated already by the archiver with the size of type A before calling the load_construct_data. How then can I allcoate an object with type B or C? There are examples on how this can be done intrusively, but since I don't have control of the source, I really want to do it non-intrusively. Any help is greatly appreciated. Will

[filesystem] Adding data to center of a file

Hi all. I am trying to use the boost libraries for the first time and am running into some odd problems. This is not being helped by the fact that I am rather rusty in C++! Quite simply I am writing out data to a file, which I need to have a header and footer on and then content in the center. When more data is appended to the file then it needs to be added in between the header and footer. In order to do this I check if the file exists before starting to write and only write the header in in that case - which works fine. However if the file already exists then I need to open it for writing, and then rather than appending start from one line/10 characters before the end of the file and append. However if I open the file with any option other than 'out | app' then the file gets wiped, I have tried every combination of flags I can think of - even 'out & ~trunc' and nothing makes any difference. From what I can see if I open it in 'out | app' then I can add things to the end of the file, but seek commands are ignored. If I open it in any mode other than app then the file gets wiped! Newbie program_options linking problem

Hello, everyone, I'd like to please ask if someone could help me with a problem that I'm having linking against boost_program_options on linux with gcc 3.4.4 on a dual-core opteron machine. I produce my object files with g ++ -c fine from my source, but at link time ld does not seem to be able to locate the right symbols, despite finding /usr/lib/ libboost_program_options.so. This compile seems to work fine under Mac OS X with xcode, and I've spent quite a lot of time trying to compile my own boost which tests fine but has the same problems with my linking... is there any work around against too few template arguments error. template <typename T, template <typename ELEM, typename = std::allocator<ELEM> > class CONT > CONT<T> someFunc() { } this gives an error in visual c++ yet it works perfectly fine in devc++ 4.9.9.2 is vc++ 7.1 too old?

[type_traits] How can I test if a class has a public constructor?

Hi, I want to prevent non-factory creation of my classes. All classes have constructors without arguments. The constructor of a class should be 'protected' and a special creator template class is used to derive from the class and give the factory access to it. Example: class A : public Base { protected: A(); public: void DoSomething(); }; template < class T > class Creator : public T { public: static Base* Create() { return new Creator<T>; } }; ... class Factory { static A* GetAObject() { return Creator<A>::Create(); } }; The example is somewhat contrived to omit non-essential details. Anyway, what I would like to do is get a compiler error when I register a class with the factory that has a publicly accessible constructor. I tried to do this with boost::has_trivial_constructor< T > like this: class A : public Base { public: A() {} }; template < bool B > class CGiveError { public: static void error() {} }; template <> class CGiveError<true> { public: static void error() { assert( false ); } }; void RegisterAll() { CGiveError< boost::has_trivial_constructor< A >::value >::error(); } However, this doesn't work. I guess has_trivial_constructor just checks if the constructor takes arguments or not. Is there some way to achieve what I want? That is, issue an error if the constructor is public? Thanks, Steven

Hi, If you connect (disconnect) a new slot to a signal inside of a slot of the same signal, what happens? - are the slots called which where connected before the signal was called, - or is new slot be called this time, too, - or is the behaviour undefined? I've run into a problem where I'm getting an "Invalid content of repeat range" when attempting to match a string using greediness and capture operators. I'm using the following function (basically taken from the "print captures" example in the regex docs): void find_matches(const std::string& regx, const std::string& text) { boost::regex e(regx, boost::regex::perl); boost::smatch what; std::cout << "Expression: \"" << regx << "\"\n"; std::cout << "Text: \"" << text << "\"\n"; if(boost::regex_match(text, what, e)) //, boost::match_extra)) { ... [snip] ... } else { ... } } ... invoked by: find_matches(html, "<a href=(.*?)>"); The pattern I'm trying to match is working in Perl program (e.g. if ($html =~ m|<a href=(.*?)>|gs) {...} ), so it seems like the pattern should be syntactically correct. I'm building on Mac OS X 10.4 (Intel) with Boost 1.33.1. I'm new to Boost and probably spoiled by Perl pattern matching, so I'm guessing I'm missing something simple. Hi, couple of quick questions: 1. For a state, is it possible to specify a method that will be called when an event with no defined handlers is received? 2. Is is somehow possible to reuse state definitions as substates of different "higher-level" states? Sorry about the terminology, I'll give a specific example: - I've got an application that can be either in remote or locally controlled mode (this is the highest-level states). - Certain events are allowed both in remote and local, while some are not. As an example, the "CommandEvent" event should be handled both in remote and local - resulting in the "ExecutingCommandState" being entered. - I'd like to be able to reuse the definition of ExecutingCommandState regardless of the enclosing state being Remote or Local - Possible? // Johan
