Hallo, I just released version 0.5 of bcbboost, a set of patches that enable use of the Boost 1.33.1 libraries with Borland's BCB2006. This is likely to be the last release to be based on this combination of libraries and compiler. As 1.34 will include all the patches included here, I don't expect to issue further releases before a new version of BCB comes out. [type_traits] Why there is no recursive_const trait?

boost::bind and member template functions

I can't seem to make boost::bind work with a member template function and it seems like is should. The following won't compile with MSVC 7.0, struct Test_t { template<typename T> void testV( int i, std::vector<T>& b ) { b.push_back( static_cast<T>(i) ); } char m_c; }; void MyTest() { int i(1); Test_t t; std::vector<long> v; boost::bind( &Test_t::testV<long>, t, _1, v )(i); } I get a whole bunch of wrong number of arguments errors. I tried the boost::bind<void> variation and that also won't compile, just with a little different error of the form "cannot convert parameter 1 from 'void (int,std::vector<_Ty> &)' to 'boost::type<T>'" If testV is just a regular template function, not a member of a class or struct, it works fine. Anybody have any idea how to make this work? Thanks, Matt S.

Header file granularity policy?

Some Boost libraries, such as SmartPtr and Variant, offer a single header with declarations for all library functionality as well as a set of headers for subsets of functionality. For example, smart_ptr.hpp declares all of shared_ptr, shared_array, weak_ptr, scoped_ptr, scoped_array, and intrusive_ptr. If I don't want all these declarations, I can use more specific headers, e.g., shared_ptr.hpp or scoped_array.hpp. Such libraries allow me to choose between the convenience of a single comprehensive header or the precision of multiple targeted headers. Other libraries seem to offer only the collection of targeted headers. For example, FileSystem offers five headers, but there doesn't seem to be a comprehensive filesystem.hpp. Similarly, Lambda seems to offer only targeted headers; there doesn't seem to be a single "declare everything in Lambda" header. (There is a lambda.hpp, but it's not comprehensive, e.g., it doesn't declare Lambda's bind.) I find that this kind of inconsistency among libraries degrades my experience as a Boost user, especially when I'm first learning to use a library. More than once I've spent time puzzling over a compilation error, only to discover that my mistake was not including a needed header. (I seem to make this error most commonly when using Lambda.) Is there some kind of Boost convention or policy on whether a library should offer a comprehensive "declare everything in the library" header in addition to more targeted headers? Thanks, Scott

Compile 32 bits on 64 arch how-to ?

Hello, I would like to compile boost on 64 opteron arch but create the libraries in 32 bits mode (using -m32 cxxflags). The reason for that is that i have quite a lot libraries compiled in 32 that i can't port for the moment to 64. I'm not sure how to do that. I read about modifying user.hpp usung the configure script and that is what i did but it still doesn't seem to compile with the -m32 compiler flag. Can anyone help me ?

Hi list. I'm trying to find out the way to bind depending on the types in a lambda expression. But the problem is that this code depends on the fact that _1 is int while _2 is pair<string, int>. I don't know whether this is platform independent, and this code still seems to be weird anyway. So, what I want to do is write a function get_score that successfuly compiles and run the following: total = accumulate(subjects.begin(), subjects.end(), 0, get_score(_1) + get_score(_2)); I've tried my best only to fail. Convenience.hpp extension core drops on ~ (tilda)

I ran across a problem in the convenience extension function. If the filename happens to have the the tilda character in it the function core drops. I discovered the problem when a file named ~trash was inadvertently created in a data directory. After creation of that file the system started core dropping. After much debugging I narrowed the problem to the extension function and the ~trash file. I was able to replicate the problem by std::string filename = "~test.txt"; string ext = extension(filename); Does anyone know a work around or if there are any other gotcha characters in this function. [SmartPointers] weak_ptrs, raw pointers, and cycles

I've recently realized that I just don't get something. Cycles of shared_ptrs are bad, because they can lead to resource leaks. To break a cycle, we're encouraged to use weak_ptrs. Okay, but we could use raw pointers to break the cycle, too, and I can't see any advantage offered by the weak_ptr. If A uses a shared_ptr to B and B uses a weak_ptr to A, B's life will be shorter than A's (its destructor will be invoked from A's destructor and will run to completion before A's does), so there is no advantage to a weak_ptr being able to tell if it dangles. In this context, it never will. So it seems that using a raw pointer to break cycles has no disadvantage over a weak_ptr, and it's more efficient (i.e., smaller and faster). Clearly, I'm missing something. Can somebody please explain what it is? I understand that weak_ptrs have other uses (e.g., as observers), so my question is only about the advice to use weak_ptrs to break cycles. Thanks, Scott

[BGL] Maps as vectors x parameterized maps

Hi! Some of boost algorithms require a vertex_index_map. Since I'm not very familiar with bgl, I don't know if there're any which also require an edge_index_map. If the algorithms were parametrized by the above maps, we could use vectors indexed by the the values in this maps to create capacity_maps, distance_maps, weight_maps and any other maps required by the algorithm (however, to maintain the same level of flexibility we would have to allow the users to parameterize the value types of this vectors). And we would still have constant time access to the maps (like the default boost map implementations in the algorithms). Just for a matter of curiosity, what are advantages between using boost's strategy and the one I described above (in which all maps would be vectors)? The major benefit I can see on boost's current strategy is flexibility. The user can use any map implementation he/she wants (maybe this maps comes from legacy applications). There's also the possibility of implementing readable and writable maps. What are others advantages? And what could be the drawbacks of using this vector aproach? Thanks. -- Leandro Terra C. Melo

Would it be much easier to implement the boost graph lib if C++ containers could reference themselves? I mean if something like std::list_traits<T> was available so that the iterator class could be got without instantiating the actual list. Simplistically, some thing like... struct vertex; struct edge; typedef std::list_traits<vertex>::iterator Vit; typedef std::list_traits<edge>::iterator Eit; struct edge { Vit source; Vit target; }; struct vertex { std::list<Eit> edges; }; I'm asking because container traits seem to be useful in the work I do, so I'm trying to garner support for them. But, the result is obviously different from what I expected: [3,3]((0,0,0),(0,4.29497e+09,0),(0,0,4.29497e+09)) This must be due to type conversion from unsigned from double that occurs at 'm(i, i) = -i'. IMHO, the code must works as follows i // unsigned -i // (-1) * i = int * unsigned = int m(i, i) = -i // lhs is double, so int on rhs should be converted // into double. Building boost for 64-bit on AIX

Hi, I'm trying to build boost (1.32.0) on an IBM SP2 under AIX5, using the 64-bit ABI. This is troublesome. [serialization] -- compiling but not linking...undefined references

I successfully built the entire boost library using the bjam utility. Now I'm trying to compile and link demo.cpp but it is failing to resolve about a dozen symbols. demo.cpp is the example code for the serialization library. A typical error reads: undefined reference to 'boost::archive::ARCHIVE_SIGNUTURE' I am linking to the libboost_serialization-gcc.so library. Is there another? Can anyone steer me in the right direction? Thx.

[program_options] How to allow multiple options?

Hi, I have spent several hours looking at the docs and sources, but I cannot figure out how to allow multiple occurances of an option. Many unix tools allow you to specify the --verbose option multiple times, to mean increasing verbosity of output, and I want to replicate this behaviour. Does this require writing a new class derived from value_semantic, that combines the behaviour of bool_switch() and typed_value<std::vector<bool>> ? I'm not sure how to go about doing that. It is a very useful lib, but I do wish (often!) there was some real reference docs (aside from the doxygen stuff and comments in the sources themselves, which isn't enough :-( Unrelated, but in trying to figure this out from the docs, I noticed in the overview.html, in the Syntactic Information there is a call to a function value<string>()->implicit(). However typed_value<T> has no such member function. Maybe it is left over from a previous design iteration or something, as there is a member variable m_implicit but it is never initialized or accessed. Cheers, Ian McCulloch

[serialization] best practice for boost::serialization + BerkeleyDB?

I'm interested in using boost::serialization for some small classes which need to be backed by a database. I thought I'd try and take advantage of boost::serialization to manage the basic marshaling of objects into/out of a binary format, and use BerkeleyDB for database support. Unfortunately, I looked around for some prior art, but couldn't find any, so I'm posting here a small example of my own with the hope that others may lend feedback on this basic approach, or else find use for the ideas here in their own work. The following code was built and (minimally) tested with gcc-3.4.6, stlport-5.0.2, berkeleydb-4.4.20 (with stlport), boost-1.33.1 (with gcc/stlport). Thanks! Johan I did get a build by copying the msvc vc8 extension text into a file vc8-tools.jam and then using -sTOOLS=vc8 on the command line. I don't know if this is the correct way or not but it seemed to work. Problem building for VC-8

Hi I am trying to build the boost libraries on XP with the VC-8 compiler from the Express edition. I have downloaded boost-1-33-1 and bjam boost-jam-3.1.13-1-ntx86. I tried to follow the instructions at http://www.boost.org/tools/build/v1/vc-8_0-tools.html. It's not clear to me if the msvc tools and the vc8 extension have to be installed or are part of bjam. I can't find a download for the tools though. Ignoring that, I simply ran up the hopefully correct environment by running "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Platform SDK for Windows Server 2003 R2\Setup\SetEnvLaunchWinXP32Retail.Cmd" /XP32 /RETAIL and then vcvars32.bat. I also set VC80_ROOT to my VC8 directory. Whatever I try I get the same result as below. It's trying to invoke VC7 which I don't have. Any help appreciated. [format] When compiling with vc8 I get a warning

Hello, when compiling one of my projects which uses Boost.Format I get the compiler warning shown below. I have defined both _CRT_SECURE_NO_DEPRECATE & _CRT_NONSTDC_NO_DEPRECATE as suggested by various web pages. Looking for arithmetic metafunctions for ratios.

Hi, I'm looking for a metafunction like this: template < class N1, class D1, class N2, class D2 > struct times { typedef ... numer; typedef ... denom; }; N1, D1, N2, and D2 are all MPL integral constant wrappers. The numer member of the times metafunction is the numerator N of the ratio (preferably in reduced form) produced by (N1/D1) * (N2/D2) = (N/D). Likewise, the denom member is the denominator D of the ratio produced from this equation. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks, Eric.

Hi, I get the following error compiling with MSVC toolset arhcitecture=x86 address-model=64: C:\boost-cvs\boost\boost/numeric/interval/hw_rounding.hpp(36) : fatal error C1189: #error : Boost.Numeric.Interval: Please specify rounding control mechanism. The source code is taken form RC4 head today (15-aug-2006). Is there something wrong with my setup or it's a feature ;-)? In header file that there is no handling of x64 whatsoever. So, it should be a feature. Can anyone advice an acceptable workaround? Artem.

Using boost compiled with VC++ 8.0 on VC++ 6.0

Hello everybody, I have just successfully compiled boost 1.33.1 with Visual C++ 8.0 Express Edition and it seems to work fine with that compiler. Unfortunately, I am still forced to use Visual C++ 6.0 for applications that include dialogs and other resources, as the Express Edition of Visual C++ 8.0 does not support these. Boost serialization xml format and xml comments

Our development environment is using MSVC71 at the moment, and our coding standard requires warning level 4 and 64-bit compatiblity check of the compiler. But whenever I use some of the Boost library headers (most notably Boost.Function, Boost.Integer and Boost.uBLAS for now, and we have not started using most of the other libraries yet), there are tons of warnings from the compiler. As our development team view compiler warnings as important signs of potential problems in our own code, we'd like to suppress warnings from Boost headers (assuming that they are at least better tested than our code). So my question is: Is there a way for us to suppress warnings from Boost headers without affecting the warning level significantly on our own code? Scripting using boost

Hi, I want to simple scripting in my application, something like. IF window_title equals Firefox or window_title equals InternetExplorer open_kiosk() IF // nest if END_IF END_IF In this case I want to match the rule "window_title" and a parameter to that rule and upon seeing the text open_kiosk() I want to execute the real function. What would be the best boost libraries to use to achieve something like this? I am thinking of going with spirit and a combination of boost.regex or boost.xpressive. Thanks Shams

A conflict in Boost?

I am developing a console program in Win32 using Borland C++ Builder 6 and Boost 1.33.1. I have a statically linked library that uses Boost tokenizer and regex. The main program uses Boost function and program_options. If my library is linked with the main program, the help output (generated by program_options) crashes with a null pointer access. This happens even if the library is not referenced in any way - it is enough just to link it in. Remove the library from the link list and the problem disappears. I'm fairly much out of ideas now so a bit of help would be very much appreciated. Ebbe

[BGL] dijkstra_shortest_path fails to call initialize_vertex

In Boost 1.33.1, the documentation at http://boost.org/libs/graph/doc/dijkstra_shortest_paths.html for the Dijkstra's Shortest Path algorithm says that the initialize_vertex(v,g) method of a Dijkstra visitor is invoked on each vertex in the graph before the start of the algorithm, but when I created a visitor with an initialize_vertex method, it was never called. I did some digging into the source, and found that when the Dijkstra's algorithm delegates to the Breadth First Search algorithm, it calls breadth_first_visit. However, only breadth_first_search calls initialize_vertex. Thus initialize vertex is never called. For now, I've decided to work around it without patching BGL, but can this be fixed in a future version?

Yes, the TObjects are fixed up twice, but I think the second fixup is an error because vector<> doesn't really contain the data elements, it contains a ptr to the data elements. When the vector container is "copied" from the stack to the heap, the newly allocated internal vector element array will be randomly allocated from somewhere else in the heap, so using an offset based off the address of the new copy of the vector container won't work. I can think of two possible theoretical solutions to the problem: 1) Use the container::swap function to exchange internal data ptrs of the stack and heap copy of the vector. This gives the heap vector the ownership of the stack vector's elements. This seems the most efficient technique since it avoid reallocating and copy constructing the elements. There's also no need to fixup the ptrs to the elements using this technique. 2) Continue to use the copy constructor for the vector when transferring the vector from stack to heap, and use the internal array ptr inside the new copy of the vector to fixup the elements. This definitely seems like the lesser of the two options. I would have tried to make a fix for this, but the algorithm for handling the moveable ptrs that define the range of addresses to fixup was a little complicated for me to follow. In particular, I wasn't sure how to make the fixups take place so that truly "contained" data gets fixed up, while avoiding fixing up the data that is merely "pointed" to by data members (and hence shouldn't be fixed up when the container is copied). One idea I had was to keep around the size of the data objects being moved, so that the reset_address function could look for ptrs in the moveable_ptr range that have addresses between old_address and old_address+object_size. But I also figured there was a good chance that there is already information available somewhere on which items in the object_id table are "contained" vs "pointed to". best regards, Dan Notestein

[Lambda] Protecting expressions with "mixed placeholders"

Hi all, Assuming "v" is an STL container, and "value" is a value the container can hold, I wish to do the following: ll::accumulate()(v.begin(), v.end(), true, _1 && (_2 != value)); which works: it returns true if all elements in the container are different from "value", false otherwise (might require a minute of thinking to come to that conclusion). Now I wish to make a lambda expression out of the above piece of code, which accepts "value" as the operator () argument, in order to be evaluated: bind(ll::accumulate(), v.begin(), v.end(), true, _1 && (_2 != value_placeholder)); where _1 and _2 should be protected but value_placeholder shouldn't (this is why I used "mixed placeholders" in the subject). In other words, should the bind-expression be evaluated with (value) as its operator() argument, only "value_placeholder" must be replaced by "value", the _1 or _2 placeholders must not. A simple protect: protect(_1 && (_2 != value_placeholder)) is obviously wrong, as "value_placeholder" cannot be replaced by "value" in an expression like: bind(ll::accumulate(), v.begin(), v.end(), true, protect(_1 && (_2 != value_placeholder)))(value); since "value_placeholder" itself, too, is protected. [BGL] experience with rooting diff on dijkstra

Hello, after the discussion about on-demand vertex initialisation I implemented a diffing algorithm on top of BGL's dijkstra. I thought the main problem is that BGL is inherently linear in the number of vertices (because it initialises some maps on each vertex prior to running the algo), but in practice, for diffing files, that's probably not too relevant, as the case of two files being pretty different is not a rare one (and two completely different files will need to access any node). The algorithm used by gnu diff is, though also quadratic in the input, linear in space usage, which one can't say for the dijsktra approach. (I haven't look at the algorithm, but they cite a paper which suggests that.) And gnu diff is much faster than my program in practice, though my one is probably fast enough for what I want to use it for. Jens

I am using the Boost unit test suite for the first time, but am having a problem using BOOST_CHECK_EQUAL with wide strings. For example: std::wstring str1 = L"unit"; std::wstring str2 = L"test"; BOOST_CHECK_EQUAL(str1, str2); This produces the following error: c:\boost\include\boost-1_33_1\boost\test\test_tools.hpp(274) : error C2679: binary '<<' : no operator found which takes a right-hand operand of type 'const std::wstring' (or there is no acceptable conversion) Any help would be appreciated.

[regex]Using regex in x64 exe with VC 8.0

I was able to successfully compile the boost libraries for x64 under VC 8.0 using the following line: bjam "-sTOOLS=vc-8_0-amd64" As far as I can tell everything was successful (see note at end of message). There was, of course, a vast quantity of warnings, but all of the lib files seem to be there. Then I tried creating an app using regex. The test code essentially boils down to this: #include <boost/regex.hpp> bool testregex( const char* StringToMatch ) { return( boost::regex_match( StringToMatch, boost::regex("[A-Z]+") ) ); } It compiles fine, but fails to resolve three regex related functions in the linker. Paraphrasing to make it a little more readable (if you want to see the full text, let me know): basic_regex<char, regex_traits<char,w32_regex_traits<char> > >::do_assign re_detail::perl_matcher<...>::match re_detail::perl_matcher<...>::perl_matcher [constructor] All three of these functions reference boost::w32_regex_traits. Perhaps this is where the problem lies? Should it be w64_regex_traits? Am I missing a define somewhere? Any ideas? As an aside: I was only able to compile the boost libraries on a 64-bit machine. Running bjam on a 32-bit machine kept popping up a message box saying that (vc2005path...)\amd64\cl.exe was not a valid executable. Apparently the bjam configuration wants to use a true 64-bit executable version of cl. I wasn't even aware that any part of VS2005 was actually 64-bit. I thought it was a 32-bit application that could compile/link 64-bit executables. I certainly can compile 64-bit apps under the IDE. Anyway, I only mention this in case it somehow relates to the underlying problem. Thanks, -- Bill --

Hi, I'm new to boost / generic programming and I'm trying to understand how enable_if works because I don't like using things I don't understand. I made a simple example which I thought would have the same behavior as using enable_if but doesn't. Im having trouble calling an input file stream from inside a function and was hoping if anyone can help me with a solution. Im compiling with MSVC++ 8.0. [BGL] Is there a way to avoid a sequence of edges while traversing a Graph?

The problem we are trying to solve is as follows: The figure below describes a section of a graph. Avoid the sequence from A->B->C->D. 2. Still be able to traverse to D from A via other paths, if available (eg. A->E, E->F, F->B, B->C, and C->D) We would like to be able to represent this in a graph (BGL) in a manner that will allow algorithms (such as DSP, connected_components etc.) to not take the 'prohibited path' into account. [program_options] bug or not... change proposal

In my former post I wrote about assertions in program_options library... Since nobody answered I had to debug some boost::code. As I found out, current assertion of po relies in the following: in the function format_paragraph (option_description.cpp:365) is written: //... if (line_begin + (line_length - indent) > par_end) //... line_begin is of type std::string::const_iterator; line_length - indent is 51 in the last line only one word is written, which is shorter then 51 characters. By adding 51 to an iterator an assertion check is made, that the addition will produce an iterator out of string bounds. I know that iterators should behave like pointers, but in this case it is impossible to debug. Would be nice if some of boost developers decide to make a workaround. I will fix it locally. Hi, I cross compile to an Arm platform with the following... bjam "-sGCC_ROOT_DIRECTORY=/opt/montavista/mobilinux/devkit/arm/iwmmxt_le" "-sGCC=iwmmxt_le-gcc" "-sGXX=iwmmxt_le-g++" stage This builds the libs to a stage folder, rather than installing them. Dear boost-community, has anyone experience in cross-compiling boost? I tried to build the whole thing using eldk ppc_6xx-gcc for linux @ power pc, doing the build process on linux @ x86. It generated object code for x86 whatever I did. Thought about writing a toolset but I don't understand a single bit of what happens in gcc-tools.jam :-( In effect I'd need the possibility to add a prefix for the gcc-tools, because all the gcc, g++, ld etc. are named ppc_6xx-gcc, ppc_6xx-g++, ppc_6xx-ld instead. Hi all, I'm having some difficulty understanding my options for seeding the base generators in mersenne_twister.hpp. I'm interested in the array initialization that is somewhat obtusely mentioned in the documentation. Hi all, I am doing some research to use boost-signals library. I was reading the Tutorial of boost-signals library and have tested the Documents-View example , and understand the basic to use it. In the tutorial , there is a template function named visit_each , I suppose it is a iteration function to iterate all the slots or signals . However, there is not much information about how to use visit_each. I try to look into source code but as a newbie in template programming I really could not understand the source code. However, When I run bjam ordinary way, pdf build stopped with attached error. * HTML documentations are built correctly * CVS HEAD and RC_1_34_0 also failed What is the reason of this failure? /usr/local/src/boost/doc $ bjam --v2 pdf The following software version was used . At least under MSVC 8 I can do: boost::array< boost::array<int,2>, 4 > foo = { -1,1, 0,0, 1,-1, 2,-2 }; or int foo[4][2] = { {-1,1}, {0,0}, {1,-1}, {2,-2} }; or boost::array<int,2> foo[4] = { {-1,1}, {0,0}, {1,-1}, {2,-2} }; but not boost::array< boost::array<int,2>, 4 > foo = { {-1,1}, {0,0}, {1,-1}, {2,-2} }; just wondering why this is the case.

format precision specifiers and strings

Hello all, I'm having trouble with boost format and precision specifiers with strings. The problem is that if I don't specify the 's' in the format string, a precision specifier does not truncate the string as I would expect: format("%.4s") % some_string The above will truncate some_string to the first four chars. format("%|.4s|") % some_string Same thing. However, the following does not truncate: format("%|.4|") % some_string This is confusing because the biggest boon to using boost::format for me is that the type specifier is (I thought) unnecessary. I would think that format would see the .4 and use that as precision if a floating point value was provided and use it as the length of the string if a string was provided. Dear all, I want to misuse boost regex for pattern searching. The intermediate form will then be a string, but some of its characters can have multiple values, e.g: aaa aba aac abc Thus the string can be represented as a[a,b][a,c]. Still on this multiple string representation I want the full power of regular expressions, so I still want to search for aaa, or (a|b)* etc. Is it possible to create some sort of adjusted string and overload the operator== ? I know that as alternative I can adjust the matching string, but this would be a fallback. Wkr, me

I've used boost (although very lightly) on Windows Mobile 5 via Visual Studio 2005. I've heard that Brew and Symbian could not in the past support boost because they had no static writeable data. Recently however with Series 60 v3/Symbian 9.1 and Brew elf2mod writeable static data is available on these platforms. Has anyone used boost on these platforms (ie Brew/Symbian/WM5)? What parts of boost are likely to work on these platforms? What parts of boost are likely to fail on these platforms? Thanks

Hi...I need help bad. I just started using boost and it seemed very useful for doing regular expressions. I do have a problem and that is I have tons of memory leaks and I am not sure how or if it can be fixed. [array] VC++ 7.1 bug and a proposed fix

The following code does not compile with VC++ 7.1 and Boost 1.33.1. [asio][iostream] trying to implement nntp-client

Hi Boosters, I´m playing around with the great boost::asio library but have problems using the boost::asio::ip::tcp::iostream. So my questions are: - In what way differ tcp::iostreams sending from asio::write() sending? - Do tcp::iostreams append (or convert or drop) any characters of the given string before sending? - Is there a way to gain direct access to tcp::iostreams underlying socket (at least for testing)? - What am I doing wrong? Ownership of Boost IP?

My employer's legal department has just stated that we may not use Boost for product development because of a hypothetical lawsuit risk. The reasoning appears to be that some party might rise up and claim that parts of one or more Boost libraries actually belong to it: that an individual developer, perhaps unknowingly, submitted code that was not his to give away because it rightfully belongs to his employer. In this horrid fantasy, the employer would then sue many parties, including anyone who has ever incorporated the affected Boost library into their own products. The SCO lawsuits make it tough to dismiss such arguments out of hand. This is disturbing on a number of levels. I want to marshal whatever counterarguments I can quickly assemble. If it states anywhere on the Boost web site that the Boost organization certifies its implementation IP clean... sorry, I wasn't really expecting that. But anything whatever that would bolster the case against this paranoia would be extremely helpful. Thank you!

A composite key accepts several attributes and presents the records sorted in lexicographical order with respect to them. In your particular case, suppose you've got an index (non-unique) whose key is composite_key< meteo_record, const_mem_fun<meteo_record,const string&,&meteo_record::get_grid_type>, const_mem_fun<meteo_record,const string&,&meteo_record::get_var_name>, const_mem_fun<meteo_record,float,&meteo_record::get_ip2>, const_mem_fun<meteo_record,int,&meteo_record::get_ip1Kind>, const_mem_fun<meteo_record,float,&meteo_record::get_ip1> > (where I've used some imaginary names for the attribute getters). This index sorts records lexicographically by grid_type,var_name,ip2,ip1Kind,ip1 which looks like what you're after, from what I understand about the description of your current query process. [threads] extension proposal

Hello, I would like to ask if it makes sence to introduce a data structure in boost::threads library, which implements a threads pool. Sometimes a system design can look like: Create a maximum of N threads and execute these threads with different tasks. If there more than N threads running then the threads_pool::get_thread(...) operation should block until one of threads gets ready. It is also possible to implement threads_pool::get_thread to use a policy which can block if the N is reached or return N+1 created thread. What I miss now in the threading library is the ability to reuse the thread. I think thread creation in the OS is an expensive task. If one has created thread, there should be a possiblity to reuse it. I understand it is possible to pass a function to the thread which executes tasks from the queue and therefore reuses threads, but this involves user implementation of such a function each time this programming pattern needs to be fullfilled. Would not it be a better idea to define a thread pool interface which has a synchronized queue (priority or not, should be customizeable) of tasks and pool of threads which are able to execute these tasks (boost::function0<void>) instances? I don't think I am the first person who comes up with this question... Would be really nice to hear your input on this issues or at least some links pointing to explanation, why this should not be done. With Kind Regards, Ovanes Markarian
