Hey i have a quick question regarding dynamic bits. Is there a quick and effective way to reverse bits. (if so how)... i try swapping.. but i get compile time error. so that i can calculate iterative-fft since it requires bit-reverse-copy for (i = 0; i<num_bits/2; ++i) swap(b[i], b[i+numbits/2]);

[Nat] That could be a useful enhancement. If you're interested enough, you might submit a code and documentation patch. Until then, maybe you could introduce a path subclass for your own use that replaces all '\' with '/' before passing the input path string to the base class.

Hi! I need to define a map with int_<1...150>->Type1...150 pairs. Im source file I define: #define BOOST_MPL_CFG_NO_PREPROCESSED_HEADERS #define BOOST_MPL_LIMIT_MAP_SIZE 150 #include <boost/mpl/map.hpp> When compiling I get an error in the file: ...\boost\include\boost-1_33_1\boost\mpl\map.hpp on line: 36 fatal error C1083: Cannot open include file: 'boost/mpl/map/map150.hpp': No such file or directory Development environment is Visual C++ 8 Express Edition The help states: BOOST_MPL_CFG_NO_PREPROCESSED_HEADERS is an boolean configuration macro regulating library's internal use of preprocessed headers. When defined, it instructs the MPL to discard the pre-generated headers found in boost/mpl/aux_/preprocessed directory and use preprocessor metaprogramming techniques to generate the necessary versions of the library components on the fly. In this implementation of the library, the macro is not defined by default. To change the default configuration, define BOOST_MPL_CFG_NO_PREPROCESSED_HEADERS before including any library header. Not quite, I am disappointed that the library eliminates the code to treat backslashes as directory separators at compile-time on non-Windows systems and doesn't provide me with an option to explicitly enable this code for the few file paths that I know will have a Windows syntax. Note that because Windows supports either directory separator it is possible to parse a Linux relative file path on Windows (with minimal limitations). [variant] trouble using recursive_variant with MSVC ...

Any interest in a separate Boost.TR1 release/download?

I wonder if people would find a separate download for the Boost TR1 components useful ? At present this is vapourware: I'm not sure how easy it will be to sort out documentation and build issues when extracting the TR1 subset, but I'm prepared to put together a preliminary (alpha) release of such a beast if there's demand, and from there we can at least see how viable releasing such a Boost subset would be. Dave, Sorry for my misleading words, the meaning was: As more as I can pre-calculate code at compile time (means slower compilation times) and substitute runtime calculation the more speed I get at runtime. Hope that was what you were meaning in the MPL book. [Boost.python] Converting python file object to std::istream.

I am exposing a C++ class to python that takes a reference to a std::istream object and operates on it. It looks something like this: class StreamReader { public: StreamReader(std::istream& strm); private: std::istream& strm_; } I would like to expose this class to python allowing a python client to pass in any python file type object (regular file object, StringIO object, stdin, etc.), as a C++ client would be able to pass any std::istream derived object. Now it seems to me that someone must have encountered this problem before, but I haven't seen any references as to how to make this work. Any ideas on the best way to proceed would be appreciated. thanks, Dan

[mpl::map & mpl::transform] Problems using mpl::map in mpl::for_each

Hello, I have some slightly different code, which is presented in C++ Template Metaprogramming book to use the mpl::for_each function: mpl::for_each< mpl::transform<seq, wrap<_1> >::type >(dispatcher_type()); The deviation from the book is that my seq it not mpl::vector<...>, but mpl::map<...> In the docs is written, that mpl::transform operates on Forward Sequence. In the doc of forward sequence is stated that mpl::map is a model of it. Unfortunately this code does not compile. I could transform the map to vector, but I would not like doing it, since that would cost compile time and slow down the compilation. Is it a known issue or should not I expect map to work with transform? I also tried using itertors on seq, but that did not help. With Kind Regards, Ovanes Markarian

[Boost.Format] Erroneous Behaviour with %d Formatter

Hi all, I'm using Boost CVS version in the release branch. But according to the change log, it seems that this problem shall exist in Boost 1.33 too. I have the following code snippet, which doesn't produce the desired output: typedef unsigned char qquint8; qquint8 port = 1; boost::format fmt("Trying to probe COM%1$d:..."); std::cout << (fmt % port) << std::endl; The output will was: Trying to probe COM^A:... but what I want should be: Trying to probe COM1:... I understand that the underlying stream might have treated port as a character, thus output it as a character. But from Boost.Format's documentation, this doesn't seem obvious to me, since it always refers this as "printf-like" format string. So my question is: Is this considered a bug (thus, shall be fixed), or is it just considered a special case (thus, shall be explicitly documented under the "Differences of behaviour vs printf" section)? [Nat] I guess I have a couple of comments. One is that a character substitution pass is still cheaper than the directory parsing and other goodies that boost::filesystem gets you. The other is to ask why your *nix requirements include backslashes as directory separators? Backslashes have other significance everywhere but Windows, which is presumably why boost::filesystem::path wasn't written to treat '\' and '/' interchangeably on all platforms. Backslashes (and forward slashes) work on Windows, forward slashes work elsewhere, all per convention. You seem disappointed that boost::filesystem::path doesn't treat backslashes as directory separators on non-Windows systems.

Unable to check exception with BOOST_CHECK_THROW

I am finding that the BOOST_CHECK_THROW is not catching an exception class I made. Below is how I am calling it: void test_read_FAIL_EMPTY_READ () { boost::uint32_t size = 0; boost::uint8_t* data = 0; boost::uint32_t length = 5; Memory_Map a_ref ( size ); BOOST_CHECK_THROW ( a_ref.read ( data, length ), errors::IO_Exception ); } The read function is suppose to throw an errors::IO_Exception(int) when it finds out that the length of the read exceeds the length of the Memory_Map. What I am finding out is that the exception is being thrown but no message from Boost telling me that exception errors::IO_Exception has occurred and calling this test a success. [Serialization] Need help resolving problem putting serialization code into static library

All, I am hoping someone can help me resolve a problem I am having putting serialization code into a static library. If I am lucky, it will be simple user error. Here is a quick synopsis of the code: a.hpp class A { virtual ~A() { } ...} b.hpp class B : public A { virtual ~B() { } ... } with classes A and B both having the standard serialization functions defined in a.cpp and b.cpp respectively along with the necessary BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT statements. Now, compiling a single program like this works fine and the program is able to serialize objects of types A and B through pointers of type A without any problems. Life is good. g++ -o my_prog my_prog.cpp a.cpp b.cpp -lboost_serialization However, compiling a static library and then linking the same program like this produces a my_prog that gets an unregistered_class exception when trying to serialize an object of type B through a pointer of type A. Not what I expected because the only difference is in the linking phase where code is now coming from the library instead of the object files. g++ -o a.o -c a.cpp g++ -o b.o -c b.cpp ar cru a.o b.o libmine.a ranlib libmine.a g++ -o my_prog my_prog.cpp libmine.a -lboost_serialization Now, combining a.cpp and b.cpp and building the library produces a working program. Confusion reigns. g++ -o ab.o -c a.cpp b.cpp ar cru ab.o libmine.a ranlib libmine.a g++ -o my_prog my_prog.cpp libmine.a -lboost_serialization Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I have tried several incantations, but I cannot make any headway. I am working under the assumptions that it has something do to with the initialization code difference between using the object files and the library. I am using boost 1.33.1 on intel OS X 10.4.8 with g++ in 64 bit mode. If it would be useful, I can run experiments in 32 bit mode or on Ubuntu, but I have yet to find any differences with this issue. A related question: The reason I found this is because I ported a project to VC8 and the linker barfs, asking for the vc8 infix in the libraries. Solving boost version issues

Hello, I apologize in advance, if this contribution is slightly off-topic, but I assume that the discussed problem is of general interest for most boost users. Not rarely one stumbles across the problem that even your most favourite 3rd party library has an implementation error, and you need a fix for that. And the good thing: Those highly motivated guys have already found the error and fixed it - in cvs. Well, that is actually all very fine, especially if you are able to handle with cvs (who of the programmers can not?) and you could use this fixed version, but there remains one big problem: The 3rd party library has not been released and you want to prevent nasty effects, if your fixed version meets the older version - the have all the same lib names. OK, end of the scenario, I assume that I describe here a well-known and well-feared problem ;-) Actually everything is fine, besides...: I would like to modify the lib names and which place would be more reasonable than the bjam configuration? First, because the described problem just hits me in the moment concerning a boost fix and I would like to influence the current bjam, such that all libraries are build as usual, but with an additional user-defined (or even hard-coded(!) string constant (aka "build id") at the end of each name. I have to confess that I have little experience with bjam and I don't understand the way how I can modify the related file(s) to reach the wanted effect: I can only assume that one has to change the file Jamfile.v2, probably the "function" rule tag beginning with line 95. Please, is someone willing to help me in that situation? Second I would like to propose that the current bjam script is generally modified to allow the addition of such a user-defined build-id simply attached after the normal naming scheme described on http://boost.org/more/getting_started.html#Results libboost_date_time-gcc-mt-d-1_31-your_build_id.a with a new, to be defined bejam option, which allows such an addition. [Boost.Parameter] How to Use Named Parameters in a Class Hierarchy?

Dear all, I'm implementing a hierarchy of classes to handle different types of objects. The characteristics of these objects are mostly similar (so I can put them into a container that knows only about the pure abstract base interface type), but some properties are specific to each object types. I plan to use Boost.Parameter for its capability of providing named parameter to these object types. However, I have one problem in this approach: Since Boost.Parameter requires that the function processing the ArgumentPack to be a template, I cannot make it virtual (a member function template cannot be virtual) in my pure abstract base interface. Furthermore, due to the lack of "virtual" member function, I cannot use the base class pointer to provide these named parameters to some subclasses. So my question is: Is there a way to tackle this problem? (Use Boost.Parameter with virtual member functions? Or avoid using Boost.Parameter, but provide a way to access subclass properties that are not know directly via the base class?) Any suggestion is welcomed! I'm running into a problem when compiling with VC8 regarding the library names that are produced. The names come out with an infix of 'vc71' (e.g., libboost_thread-vc71-mt-1_33_1.lib). I gathered that this infix comes from some of the macros that are defined, but have been unable to uncover why the name is not picked up correctly, given that the compiler version is correct. I'm quite sure I've followed the installation instructions correctly, open the right command prompt and the vcvars batch file, etc. Ultimately, the problem I'm experiencing is that when porting a VC71 project to VC8, the names of the libraries required have changed :-) Regards, Javier

Failure to compile the Boost library on Win XP with MinGW

Hi, I'm running into some large frustrations with trying to compile the Boost library on WinXP using MinGW 3.4.2 (I would like to compile it so that I can use the project_options). I can't get the library to compile and I'm finding that the opaqueness of the error messages and the lack of troubleshooting documentation are very well effectively preventing me from making progress. Either this gets resolved quickly, or I'll have to drop Boost from my project and implement the functionality I need with other libraries or by hand. It seems that every compilation rule inexplicably fails when I run the jam script. I'm using the command "bjam -sTOOLS=mingw install". All the compiling rules fail and then the header files get copied. A sample of the failure messages are below. Unfortunately, the error messages do not give me any useful clues as to what is going wrong. I've also tried the command "bjam -sTOOLS=mingw stage" and received equally unimpressive results. [filesystem] unable to parse file path

Greetings, I posted this topic on the boost mailing list but believe this is a better place to discuss it. I am trying to write some cross-platform code that processes a Windows provided file path. The file path is of the form .\filename.ext (i.e. Windows style relative to current directory). Using the construct boost::filesystem::path path( ".\\filename.ext", boost::filesystem::native ) I have been able to successfully parse this path on Windows. However, I can't seem to find a construct that yields similar results on Linux. I have tried using default and explicit name checkers which result in either a filesystem_error exception or the obscurely named hidden file .\filename.ext. The library contains the logic to do this right otherwise the Windows version wouldn't work either. However, it seems the necessary code is excluded from compilation for systems other than Windows. I am trying to understand why this decision is made at compile time and is not accessible at runtime. Ideally, I would like to be able to tell the path class to use Windows path parsing (regardless of the platform the app is running on). Something in the style of: boost::filesystem::path path( ".\\filename.ext", boost::filesystem::windows ) There is a windows_name checker but it doesn't support the ".". Neither would the library be able to parse the path because of the compile-time exclusion mentioned above. At the moment, I don't see any other option than to process the path string manually before passing it to the path constructor (kind-a defeats the whole purpose of using this class). Anybody have any ideas? Also, am I really trying to do something that exotic or is this library missing some essential functionality? In the new implementation, the Base Class will hold a typedef for a Boost Variant, and then the derived objects can be instantiated by the factory by being given a std::map of the variants and stripping out the values to make a call to the constructor of the derived class. The ONLY intrusion on the classes would be a typelist in the Base class to type the appropriate Boost::Variant and a typelist in the derived class identifing the signature of the constructor to be called by the factory, similar to the factory i have posted previously. Cool ! Actualy I am now working another factory implementation. In the new implementation, the Base Class will hold a typedef for a Boost Variant, and then the derived objects can be instantiated by the factory by being given a std::map of the variants and stripping out the values to make a call to the constructor of the derived class. The ONLY intrusion on the classes would be a typelist in the Base class to type the appropriate Boost::Variant and a typelist in the derived class identifing the signature of the constructor to be called by the factory, similar to the factory i have posted previously. The MPL really is VERY cool, and I think I have JUST touched the surface !!!. I've had the same problems. The problem is with the bool field. Code restoring the archive crashes if the bool stored in the archive is not equal to 0 or 1. But since you did not write a constructor in the Obj class, the boolean will actually be initialized with anything( eg, read 14675002 for example), and will be serialized that way in the archive since it seems the serialization code does not check if the bool is equal to 0 or 1 (only the restoration code). So, the solution is to initialize your boolean correctly and be very careful whenever you use booleans. However, I think the Serialization code should be fixed (remove the check for 0 or 1, it probably does more bad than good. Hi, When I run the following program it runs successfully but throws an exception during shutdown. I don't know why, but it seems that the call to boost::filesystem::file_size() is corrupting memory somehow. This example only shows the call to file_size() but I think I've seen similar trouble with other calls within boost::filesystem. Am I doing something wrong here or is this a bug? I'm running on WinXP with VS7.1 and Boost v1.33.1. I compiled and tried it and was able to reproduce the error. Whenever you open a file, you should always do a check on file.fail() to make sure it opened successfully. You didn't, so you didn't realize the error happened earlier. It just works. I also tried setting things up so that my debug build would link against the release version of the library, because the last person that was having filesystem problems had done that, but it just works in that case too. So I'm afraid that I can't reproduce your problem with my Windows setup. If you run your app under the debugger and break when it gets the error, can you tell what sort of object it's trying to delete by backtracking up the stack? That might give some hint about what's happening. Hmm that's even more interesting, maybe a 2k vs. XP compability issue? The file fails when trying to open on my system. I don't have a 2k system to try it on, so I don't know how much more assistance I can be. Based on the posts so far in this thread, though, I get the impression that different users are getting different results, which is definitely concerning. If I get a chance, I'll try it on my Fedora system tonight and see what happens. We've started to use boost serialization and I've run into problems with serialization of derived classes. The "funny" thing is that this happens only on 64-bit Windows release compiled with MS Visual 2005. The same code works fine on Linux 32/64 bit debug/release, on Windows 32-bit debug/release and on Windows 64-bit debug. But not Windows 64-bit release. We use boost version 1.33.1. I've tried to use both abstract and non-abstract base class without any success. I did some research in the boost code and found that the exception was thrown in polymorphic::save (oserializer.hpp) by the last condition (NULL == bpos_ptr). Any clues? Is there a workaround? Safe way to allocate block of memory

I am trying to create a class which I can use to safely allocate a block of bytes. One purpose is to allow me to easily fill in a variable with N bytes from the block. For example the code below would attempt to fill a variable (e.g. boost::uint32_t val ). template <typename Value_Type> void read (Value_Type* value) { m_file_img->read (reinterpret_cast<char*>(value), sizeof(Value_Type)); } The second purpose is to create a block of bytes which I can write bytes to at particular offsets from the beginning. For example if I created a block of 50 bytes I may want to fill in bytes 5 through 8 with 4 bytes of data. My present method is create a block via 'new char[size]' and store this pointer in a class. This works for reading by when later in my program when I create a instance to write data to it I get a segfault. I was wondering if there was a boost method for creating an array of bytes? [asio] reported memory leaks when using MFC

Hi there, I have been spending some hour now on trackign down memory issues that are reported from MFC. In my client program I'm calling io_service::post( ... ) quite often and is seems to me that it allocates memory that is never been deallocated afterwards. Every call of post( ... ) will result in one memory leak. The allocation takes place in the file handler_alloc_helpers.hpp in line 39. Setting a breakpoint here shows that every post(...) call allocates some memory. The deallocation which is right below in the file is never called. Is this an known issue? Regards, Christian

[Date_Time] Posix Time Zone offset question

Hi, I've started experimenting with Boost.Date_Time's Local Time stuff. While using a posix_time_zone object the results were not what I expected. I used the POSIX.1 (IEEE Std 1003.1) timezone string suitable for use in the TZ environment variable describing my timezone for the year 2006: MST7MDT,M4.1.0,M10.5.0 Date_Time's posix_time_zone object told me that it was already the 26th but my wall clock disagrees. :) The online documentation says "A posix_time_zone is unique in that the object is created from a Posix time zone string (IEEE Std 1003.1)." and "'offset' is the offset from UTC." In the sources I've come across the offset part of a POSIX.1 timezone string is defined as "the value added to the local time to arrive at Coordinated Universal Time" with a not that "[i]f preceded by a '-', the timezone shall be east of the Prime Meridian; otherwise, it shall be west (which may be indicated by an optional preceding '+' )." * http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/000095399/basedefs/xbd_chap08.html * man pages of tzset Why do I need a negative (-) offset to make posix_time_zone work when the time zone is west of the Prime Meridian? Compiling for 32 bits on x86_64

I compiled boost on a SuSE 9.2 x86_64 machine (AMD Athlon), it built everything but compiled and linked for 64 bits. The libraries ended up in /usr/local/lib instead of lib64 though. Hello, I'm modifying the elements of a multiindex container by accessing them through an hashed index (I suppose that this is faster than accessing them through the other index, which is ordered). I would like to know if I can keep going ++ on the hashed iterator as the elements of the container get changed, without modifying the same elements more than once or reaching the end() prematurely. In other words, does the re-hash change the relative positions of the elements or are they unaltered as the elements are modified? Thanks very much, Francesco

filesystem::path noobish question

As per the subject line, I have a rather noobish question about using the boost::filesystem tools, specifically the path object. The idea here is that I want to start my program by removing the "tmp" directory in the current process context if it exists to ensure a clean working environment for the remainder of the process. To the code: ... boost::filesystem::path tmp_dir ("tmp", boost::filesystem::native); // get a native handle for "./tmp" boost::filesystem::remove_all (tmp_dir); // clean out this tree in the fs ... This code acts as expected on linux. On windows, it causes a crash. The debugger shows the tmp_dir.m_path._Bx is a bad pointer, indicating to me that the constructor failed somewhere along the way. My questions are these: (1) Is there any error checking I can perform to verify that the path() constructor succeeds, such as a null pointer value or a boolean flag within the data type? (2) Is there something about my code which is linux/POSIX specific? (3) Am I missing something else entirely? I'm using boost 1.33.0 and have a mess of other functioning code which suggests that my configuration/installation is correct on both platforms. Thanks in advance! -Nick Dimiduk

Hi, First, I am a new user of boost. I wonder of the style of 'boost::format( format-string ) % arg1 % arg2 % ... % argN'. I think it, format(...), as a function, but it seems not function in C or C++ style. % arg1 % ... seems like a group of parameters, if so, why not use '(' and ')' to wrap them? Boost.Regex hangs with large pattern

I'm using Boost.Regex to match a long, complicated pattern to between 30 and 50 long strings. I loop through and call regex_search until it doesn't find any more matches in the current string and then it moves on to the next string. The problem is that when it has looped through about 40 of the strings, Boost.Regex will hang on the regex_search() function, and it will just sit there processing forever. If I reduce the number of strings I match against there is no problem; 20-30 iterations works like a charm. It also seems to help if I reduce the size of the regex pattern. Frankly I have no clue what could be causing the problem, and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Regex assign raising exceptions

Hi everyone, I am having some issues with the boost::regex assign method. I have been following an example on the boost site for a search and replace. However I seem to be getting an Empty Expression exception when assigning my expression to my boost:regex object. boost::regex exp; const char* expression_string = "([[:space:]](|-)[[:digit:]]+)f;"; exp.assign(expression_string); Any ideas? Hello, __FILE__ is a macro for the path to the current source file. I would like to remove the common prefix (like "c:\dev\my_program\") from it, which is in a preprocessor macro SOLUTIONDIR. Is there a metaprogramming way to do that? So the class TSuffix should be used like this: TSuffix<x, n>::value // cuts prefix of length n off char array x It would be nice if the compiler would not even store the whole path in the executable, but only the distinguishing suffix. [boost::threads] can't compile threading at MSVC++ 8

I have a problem, with the following error message. Unfortunately documentation does not state what can be the reason that threads are not included. I did not define the BOOST_DISABLE_THREADS macro. But still receive an error message: Compiling... main.cc c:\boost\include\boost-1_33_1\boost\config\requires_threads.hpp(29) : fatal error C1189: #error : "Threading support unavaliable: it has been explicitly disabled with BOOST_DISABLE_THREADS" My assumption is that I configured console project. My problems is that, my base class cannot predict the exact number of parameters that a derived class may have. (A derived class may have 10 parameters, while another may have none.) The code that triggers the deferred call has matching argument values. If an immediate call were acceptable, you'd simply use a boost::signal and call it with those argument values. So... as Delfin Rojas suggested, you could use boost::bind to bind your boost::signal object with the argument values you later want passed to each connected slot. (I haven't tried this myself.) In the absence of bind placeholders (e.g. _1), bind will produce a nullary functor that you can store in a boost::function<void (void)>. When you later call that functor with no arguments, it should call each connected slot with the bound arguments. If this doesn't answer your question, please explain what we're missing.

I am implementing a signal & slots implementation with a twist. Normally when a signal is fired the connected slots are called immediately. I will need to defer the actual calls to be invoked later. Basically I need to store the function reference (via pointer or functor) and the accompanying parameter values to a 'composite' object. This composite object will be stored on a buffer. Later another processor will pick this object of the buffer and then invoke the actual function call. I am not sure how to do this, or if it can be done. I've been looking at functors and binding functionality in Boost but I am not sure if I can store a functor with parameter values in a generic container only to invoke it at a later time. The motivation is that I want a signal & slots solution where slots are executed on different processors in a multi-processor environment. Any ideas would be very welcome. But for some reasons I cannot make these tricks to work in my application. Hello there! I'm about to explore the power of boost::bind, but I am still a beginner. Maybe the question is rather stupid, but the following code does not compile and I do not understand why: typedef std::vector<std::size_t> data_t; data_t dataVec; ... populate dataVec ... std::size_t shiftIndex = 3; boost::function<std::size_t& (std::size_t)> shiftedData = boost::bind(&data_t::at, &dataVec, _1 - shiftIndex); The error message is something like /home/sweber/graphpkg/libs/boost/boost/function/function_template.hpp:119: error: invalid initialization of reference of type 'size_t&' from expression of type 'const unsigned int' My system is a debian sarge with a g++-3.3 and boost 1.33.1. Implementation of Exponential Distribution

Hi, I've been looking into statistical distributions, and while comparing Wikipedia's mathematical formulation and Boost's implementation of the Exponential Distribution, I have found two points of interest. Before continuing, I just need to add that I'm not a statistician or a mathematician, so any errors either mathematical or in interpretation below are my own. The Wikipedia reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exponential_distribution The Boost implementation (line 54 of exponential_distribution.hpp) -result_type(1) / _lambda * log(result_type(1)-eng()); Where the eng() call generates a uniform random number. The first, less critical point: If eng() is uniform, then so is (1 - eng()), which allows for the simplification of the statement passed to log() from: log(result_type(1)-eng()) to log(eng()) The second, more critical point: The implementation does not seem to be the correct inverse of the original function. Boost's implementation (with above modification) is: -result_type(1) / _lambda * log(eng()); But should actually be: -log(eng()) / _lamda; Could someone perhaps clarify the above? [boost::shared_ptr] performance killer

Hello, we have some application, where boost::shared_ptr is extensively used. After profiling with gprof I got that the shared_ptr destructor is very expensive. I used following g++ compiler flags to compile: -Wall -ftemplate-depth-50 -fexceptions -fexpensive-optimizations -O3 Are there may be some MACRO-defs, which can enable/disable some additional optimizations? [Numeric.Interval_Lib] typecasting behaviour

Hi all, Background... I'm using the interval arithmetic library to evaluate the accuracy of different algorithms for my application (i.e. I'm using the library "offline"; once a winner is chosen, the interval arithmetic will be removed). One possibility that I am pursuing is using mixed precision arithmetic; i.e. do some parts in double precision, some parts in single precision - this is to explore the possibility of eventually utilising non-conventional processing hardware such as GPUs, which tend to have only single precision arithmetic hardware. The query... Before I started using the library, I had this assumption: let A be a float with an exact representation (i.e. width=0). If we cast A to a double, the resulting double will have a non-zero width - specifically the width will be equal to the extra precision afforded to doubles vs floats. Unless I've messed something up, I find that the library does not actually behave this way, and to be frank, I think it ought to! :-) Here's the simple testcase: typedef interval<float> I1; typedef interval<double> I2; I1 y = 1.0; I2 yy = (I1)y; cout << yy.upper() - yy.lower(); I expected yy.upper()-yy.lower() to be non-zero, but it was zero. I had a look at the policies but couldn't spot anything obviously relevant to this situation. Any thoughts on this behaviour per se, or any ideas on a neat and elegant way to implement my desired behaviour? FWIW, my system is PowerPC G4 with powerpc-apple-darwin8-g++-4.0.0 (GCC) 4.0.0 20041026 (Apple Computer, Inc. build 4061). -tirath

creating lambda expressions incrementally

Hi, I´m writing a simple expression parser in boost::spirit that can parse a string like "_1 + _2" or "log(_1)" and return a function object that does just that. I used boost::lamda for that and return it as boost::function object. Now I want to parse compositions like "sqrt(_1*_1 + _2*_2)" or "(_1 + _2)*_2" etc. It is easy to parse this of course but I have to create the corresponding function incrementally (in a loop or recursively) and that means I have to keep incremental lambdas until the whole expression has been created. I can not store them as boost::function since they do not work with lambda operator overloading (apart from the fact that it would be too costly). I need a lambda type for these intermediate lambda objects. I guess the auto type specifier would solve this but when will that be available I wonder? The typeof seems to provide a solution though. I was just trying it and it seems to work! Am I on the right track or am I overlooking something? If anyone knows a better solution please tell me! cheers Arnaldur Gylfason

time_duration compile warning

Hello, I'm using GCC 4.0.2 20050808 (prerelease) (Ubuntu 4.0.1-4ubuntu9), and the time_duration class was generating the following warning for me: /usr/local/include/boost/boost/date_time/time_duration.hpp:58: warning: control may reach end of non-void function I've heard that I wasn't the first person with this problem, and well, since I like my code to compile clean (treat warnings as errors), this was preventing me to do so. Apparently GCC had some troubles with seeing that the static tick_type to_tick_count () function defined at time_resolution_traits.hpp was always returning something. Simply moving the code inside the else {} block to the end of the function made GCC confident that the function was indeed always returning something. Hello dear boost users, I am trying to use the shmem library for the first time. The domain of the application is centered on the passing of image frames from process that acquires the images to the client process via a local shared memory segment. In short, nothing really complicated. A synchronized writer/reader process. I started from looking at processA/processB example in the example directory. I am using boost 1.33.1 and shmem 0.93 (the latest available from boost vault). If for example all stored values are in the range from 0 to 1023 then only 10 bits will be used to store each value.
