[Graph] problem with arguments of transitive closure algorithm ?

Hello. Using Boost 1.34.1 (with g++-3.4.2) and more specifically the Boost Graph library, I stumbled on a small problem with the transitive_closure algorithm. I saw in the documentation that I can get a map containing the mapping between the vertices of the original graph and the ones in the transitive closure graph (the orig_to_copy parameter). But every time I call the method, I get an empty map as a result. To sum up my code, I use the following data structures for the graph: typedef boost::adjacency_list < boost::vecS, boost::vecS, boost::directedS > graph_t; typedef boost::graph_traits < graph_t >::vertex_descriptor vertex_t; and the following one for the expected map: typedef std::map < vertex_t, vertex_t > ioMap_t; The graphs and map are declared the following way: graph_t myGraph; graph_t myTCGraph; ioMap_t ioMap; I used both versions of the algorithm: 1) using named parameters, I call: transitive_closure(myGraph, myTCGraph, orig_to_copy(ioMap)); 2) using "standard" parameters, I call: transitive_closure(myGraph, myTCGraph, ioMap, get(vertex_index, myGraph)); So, the main question is easy: Where did I write something wrong ? :-) A remark though. I see that the declaration in the case of "standard" parameters is the following : template <typename Graph, typename GraphTC, typename G_to_TC_VertexMap, typename VertexIndexMap> void transitive_closure(const Graph& g, GraphTC& tc, G_to_TC_VertexMap g_to_tc_map, VertexIndexMap index_map); So, if I understand everything (I'm far from speaking C++ fluently), this means that the g_to_tc_map parameter is passed by value. Shouldn't it be rather passed by reference (this would explain my problem as, when debugging my code, I saw that the map is correctly filled in the transitive_closure method but the caller gets back nothing at all) ? [Graph] A minor bug of the max-flow algorithm?

Hi there, It seems that when searching a network maxflow, if the source and sink are the same vertex, the max-flow function in BGL will create some invalid data and cause the program to crash. To reproduce, simply change the "max_flow.dat" in libs\graph\example, and change the "s" and "t" to be the same vertex. Then compile the " edmunds-karp-eg.cpp". When run "edmunds-karp-eg < max_flow.dat", Windows will give me a crash message. I am using boost 1.34.0 with MS Visual Studio Express 2005 on Win XP2. It seems that the following line 62 of edmunds_karp_max_flow.hpp is having an error: delta = min BOOST_PREVENT_MACRO_SUBSTITUTION(delta, residual_capacity[e]) I admit that generally it doesn't make sense to have the source and sink at the same vertex, but I think it will be nicer if the program can check for this simple case... [regex] ".*" expression matches twice in regex_replace?

Hi all, I am trying to perform some simple (as I thought) text manipulation. The task was to prepend a text with some other, e.g. 1234 -> 01234. I tried to do this with the expression ".*" and format "0$&". I used regex_replace with the following parameters: std::basic_string<char> string("1234"); std::basic_string<char> format("0$&"); boost::regex exp(".*"); std::basic_string<char> result; result = boost::regex_replace(string, exp, format); I was very surprised when I got the result "012340", i.e. the format string was applied twice. After some testing, I found out that regex_replace matches a second time at the end of the string, where the expression matched an empty string (therefore only the zero was appended at the end). When using the (undocumented) option match_not_initial_null, it basically works - but then empty input strings would not match either. This also applies to the expression ".+", which works correct on the input but would not match on empty strings as well. The only solution I found so far was using "^.*" as expression. Is this a bug or a feature? Or what did I get wrong with this regular expression? Hi, I want to use the filesystem library. For simplicity I first tried to compile the simple_ls.cpp (provided at: http://www.boost.org/libs/filesystem/doc/index.htm) Unfortunately I get lots of compiler-errors. [regex] suggestion: function object for replace

Thanks for the excellent library John and others. I could not easily find an option to specify a callback function that somehow returns a custom built replacement string for use with regex_replace. The .NET framework utilises the MatchEvaluator mechanism: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.text.regularexpressions.reg… While there is no one definition of a string to return in the case of boost regex's, perhaps a Range or a pair of iterators would be sufficient (although temporaries may cause trouble for the unwary). Anyway, I have had need of of this mechanism and couldn't use the excellent regex_replace as a consequence. Neil

custom allocation for boost::array

Hi, Is it safe to do this? using boost::array; const size_t n; void* p = new char[sizeof(T) * n]; array<T, n>* data = new(p) array<T, n>; The reason I want to do this is that I have implemented my own memory pool, so new char[...] would be replaced by my_pool<T>::allocate(n). I don't want to use something like my_pool<array<T, n> >::allocate(1), because then my allocator would have to align the allocated memory to the total array size instead of just the size of its elements. I suppose the safest solution would be an implementation of array with dynamic memory and support for a standard allocator like, for example, a one-dimensional multi_array or even multi_array_ref? I am concerned about performance of those containers, however. Regards, Clemens

I have just installed Service Pack 1 for VS2005, and am now getting a warning in some code using lambda::bind. There wasn't a warning previously, but I don't know if the issue is due to an update to the C++ standard library, a legitimate warning that they weren't flagging before, or a spurious warning. So, I'm loving Foreach and as I watch it spread throughout our codebase, of course it runs across the desk of our optimization obsessed team member. So, I was curious if you could address runtime performance of Foreach. I would expect it to be essentially equivalent to a hand written for loop with caching of end(). After some nightmare chasing a bug within my code I boiled it down to a dummy MFC MDI project including nothing else but <boost/thread/tss.hpp> the line static boost::thread_specific_ptr<void *> tld_helper; in InitInstance() triggers an "R6030 - CRT not initialized" error, but only on one single windows XP platform. The app runs fine on all others. If you have any idea what might have gone wrong, please give me a hint. I put some simplified code below. I was wondering is it really necessary to use string algorithms to find in variable str2 the last occurence that does not contain a number between 1 and 9 and create a substr base on that. regulary i would use std::string strNew = str2.substr(str2.find_last_not_of("123456789")); So 2 questions. 1.) Whats the benefit of the string algorithm version of boost in this case. 2.) How would I do this using string algorithm instead.

Hi Boost experts, I'm writing code in Visual C++ 6.0 and I'm trying to replace text in a string using a regular expression to match the text. I know there is a replace function in boost - but I don't think it's accessible from the regex++ API (or am I too much of a newbie to realize this)? Is there a way for me to use boost in Visual C++ 6.0 to do what I want? Thanks for any help! Best, Mike

boost::regex_match throws exception

I build boost::regex 1.34 using Borland BDS 2006. Simple regular expresions works fine, but I have problem with this regular expresion: ^[_a-zA-Z0-9-]+(\.[_a-zA-Z0-9-]+)*(a)[a-zA-Z0-9-]+(\.[a-zA-Z0-9-]+)+$ if a try to match it with any string longer then 22 bytes, regex throws exception. use PATH environment variable to search for libraries and include files on windows with mingw

I don't see any obvious way to make bjam look in my PATH environment variable on windows (using gcc) when trying to locate header files and such. Is this possible? I have a directory "C:\c_libs" , which underneath I have two subfolders: "include" and "lib". I would like to modify user-config.jam (or if there is a more appropriate file to modify, please suggest) such that all my projects will always have access to the files in these folders without having to explictly reference these folders in each project's Jamroot file. Right now those folders are in my path environment variable, but I am open to the idea of creating explicity environment variables for each of those folders if that makes the task easier. But either way, I don't know how to do it. I banged my head against the keyboard for a few hours, and that didn't help. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. I need to display a graph . Therefore I need to compute coordinate of each node (XY) and I plan to use BGL which provide algorithms for this purpose. After having looked at the test examples, I can not see how to implement a graph and run one of the layout algorithms. Does anybody have any experience on using BGL ? My node stuct is struct { string name; int x; int y; } and I have a vector of pair that contain the edges (vector<pair<node*,node*> >). I need to feed the node.x and node.y by using my own struct or another ones provided I get the X Y.

Stupid ostringstream question

I have been searching the world in vain for a stringstream that works with a static buffer, and does not use the heap for memory allocation. We have an application that uses lots (12-16Gb) of memory. This puts a strain on the memory allocation routines, and when we want to create a small string we find that stringstream is very, very expensive, and sprintf into a static buffer much, much faster. Does boost provide anything like this? This actually came up when we realized that boost lexical_cast was using stringstream. When we replaced it with sprintf, our runtimes (when memory usage was very high) went down significantly. I should also point out that ANYTHING we did with dynamic memory at that point in the application (vector::push_back, for example) was hideously slow. I'd like to have the best of both worlds: the relatively clear syntax of the ostringstream inserters, working on a static buffer. Any help (code samples especially) appreciated. Bill

[filesystem] Using path in shared library fault (?)

Hello all, I am using filesystem::path is a shared library called 'common', to initialise a static var. static boost::filesystem::path p("/home/me"); However, this give a seg fault (Linux, gcc) when the shared library is loaded. I am guessing this is an issue with the filesytem library not being loaded in at the time of the loading of 'common' (when the static var is initialised) - hence the seg fault. Its only an issue with the static variable, as all other uses of path in the library work fine. Is there any way round this? Hi, I'm trying to use boost::iostreams for a project I'm writing and I have a problem: It seems that the destructor of boost::iostreams::stream<boost::iostreams::file_descriptor_source> closes the file descriptor. I really need to be able to close this file descriptor manually and I can't find any way to do it. Note that file_descriptor_source has a constructor parameter specifying if the descriptor should be closed in file_descriptor_source destructor or not. It perfectly works - it's boost::iostreams::stream destructor that forces closing the description, not file_descriptor_source destructor. [Boost.Graph] Compiler warning in dijkstra_shortest_paths

Hello. I use the Boost.Graph with the dijkstra_shortest_paths algorithm in my graph application. All works fine. But while compiling with the options -Wall -W I get a strange compiler warning: /usr/include/boost/graph/dijkstra_shortest_paths.hpp:80: Warning: »bfs_vis$m_decreased« is used in this function uninitialised This was the last line of the warning because it is quite long in its complete version. I translated the line above from German because I use a German version of g++, so maybe it sounds in the English version a little bit different. But the meaning remains the same:) Does anybody know what that is supposed to mean? Is something wrong with my program or is it a bug in dijkstra_shortest_paths? My question is: What are the right things to do in order not to get the message any more? How to build only Boost.Iostreams with compression filter support on Windows XP using MinGW

Good evening, Pardon my ignorance, or my poor documentation reading skills, but I am unable to build Boost.Iostreams with compression filter support on Windows XP using MinGW. I am using Boost 1.34.1, zlib 1.2.3 and bzip2 1.0.4. I tried the following command lines but to no avail: bjam --toolset=gcc -sNO_COMPRESSION=0 -sNO_BZIP2=0 -sBZIP2_LIBPATH=C:\bzip2-1.0.4 -sBZIP2_SOURCE=C:\bzip2-1.0.4 -sNO_ZLIB=0 -sZLIB_LIBPATH=C:\zlib-1.2.3 -sZLIB_SOURCE=C:\zlib-1.2.3 stage or bjam --toolset=gcc --NO_COMPRESSION=0 --NO_BZIP2=0 --BZIP2_LIBPATH=C:\bzip2-1.0.4 --BZIP2_SOURCE=C:\bzip2-1.0.4 --NO_ZLIB=0 --ZLIB_LIBPATH=C:\zlib-1.2.3 --ZLIB_SOURCE=C:\zlib-1.2.3 stage I searched through the Boost.Iostreams documentation, the Boost.Jam documentation, and the Boost.Build V2 documentation. Boost.Jam documentation indicates that the former should work, but Boost.Build V2 seems to use very little of or not at all of the -s flag for Boost.Jam, so I tried the latter. The result of both commands were the same, Boost.Iostreams was built without the compression filters. However, I do get 12 "warning: Unable to construct ./stage-unversioned" as the first output from Boost.Jam, after which it says "...patience..." and continues with the building process. Thank you in advance for assisting me in my problem, and in case I have missed out something critical yet obvious, and hence resulting in my failure, I apologise for not reading carefully enough. The Asio docs for deadline_timer::cancel say that "This function forces the completion of any pending asynchronous wait operations against the timer". Let's say I have a thread executing io_service::run, and is now invoking a completion handler of a deadline_timer. While this completion handler is underway, a second thread is calling cancel() on that deadline_timer. Is the cancel() call supposed to block until the completion handler is finished? To my best understanding, both according to the docs, and according to what seems to be logical to me, the answer is "yes, it should block". However, it doesn't. Is it a bug, or by design? Yuval

Hello all. It is clear for me the reason for template parameter CombineFunction in dijkstra_shortest_paths. For instance, prim_minimum_spanning_tree makes use of it to correct compute the MST. Basically, in Dijkstra's it is something like this: distance = distance of vertex v + weight of edge e; And in Prim's only the weight is considered: distance = weight of edge e; This is reflected on the argument used for the CombineFunction in Prim's function (from file prim_minimum_spanning_tree.hpp): prim_minimum_spanning_tree(...) { typedef typename property_traits<WeightMap>::value_type W; std::less<W> compare; detail::_project2nd<W,W> combine; dijkstra_shortest_paths(...); } Where _project2nd is: template <class U, class V> struct _project2nd { V operator()(U, V v) const { return v; } }; However, it is not clear the reason of the CompareFunction template parameter (which is a predicate). First, because, I don't see a situation where not using std::less<Some_type> would make any sence, because of the way the Dijkstra's algorithm is constructed. Second, because the value_type of the DistanceMap must be the same of the value_type of WeightMap (according to the documentation). Therefore, why the following two lines of code in Prim's implementation (from the function I pointed at beginning of the email)? typedef typename property_traits<WeightMap>::value_type W; std::less<W> compare; Since, in Dijkstra's algorithm the only difference is that DistanceMap is used as an argument for the definition of the value_type from property_traits. Per the C++0x discussions earlier in the week, and the calls for the Bjarne, et al to make some definitive decisions regarding a threading API, I would ask the Boost thread developers not to wait and please add a cancel method now. I am trying to understand composing, multitoken and zero_tokens methods of the typed_value class. This link http://www.boost.org/doc/html/boost/program_options/typed_value.html#id6986… is to the composing method from the reference page for the typed_value class: it suggests looking at the is_composing documentation, which is unfortunately empty. Can this be fixed for Boost 1.34.1? Also, can someone explain to me what the multitokens method does. The doc states "Specifies that the value can span multiple tokens." [interprocess] Problems on Mac OS X 10.4

We are using the boost interprocess library for some cross-platform interprocess communication. It seems to be working fine on Windows but we are having some issues on the Mac OS (10.4.10, using gcc 4). One thing is that the remove call always deletes the shared memory file, regardless of whether the other process is using it. Does anyone know if this has been tested? Also, the only version I can find is in CVS. Is this where I should be getting the source from, or is there an "official" release somewhere? -- Mark

[tests] Signals not well covered in unit tests (in contrast to exceptions)?

Hi, I have the following problem with a C++ project on Linux using the Boost.test framework: I use the "resource acquisition is initialization" technique to ensure that all resources I allocate are properly released. That's why I have helper classes with a resource allocation in the constructor and deallocation in the destructor. One example of such a helper class is an indentation for my logging code: LOG("blabla"); { LogIndendation indent; // start indentation of output LOG("a message"); divide_by_zero(); LOG("a further message"); } // reset indentation LOG("blabla"); The output is normally: blabla a message a further message blabla Please note that divide_by_zero (which perform an integer division by zero) causes a SIGFPE fatal arithmetic error and the signal handler of Boost.test detects this. Nevertheless the destructor of LogIndendation is *not* called and all further tests I have create wrong indented output (which I compare with the expected output as another test too). So I get: test1 blabla a message unknown location(0): fatal error in "Test1": signal: SIGFPE (arithmetic exception) test2 blabla If I do not generate a signal but throw an exception instead, the destructor is called so this is fine. (Please note that g++ does normally not call a destructor with such a technique if the exception is not catched at all (probably because all resources are expected to be cleaned up, once the process terminates???), but Boost.test catchs all exceptions - good.) I also tried to write my own SIGFPE signal handler which just throws an exception. But this handler is not called, probably it's overwritten by Boost's one. Probably Boost doesn't call the previous handler because it normally terminates the application. But maybe it's possible for Boost to save the initial handler in main() and later to compare the current handler with the initial one. If they are equal handle signals as usual (output an error) otherwise do nothing and call the previous handler? Has anyone a good solution for me, or is there a problem with Boost.test and signals? How to solve this? Jens

For some reason i can no longer specify the toolset to use ...when i run build.bat mingw on my windows machine.. it defaults to msvc. Inside user-config.jam I have using mingw : : C://Dev-Cpp//bin//gcc ; but it keeps using msvc build.

[Lambda] Trouble using istreambuf_iterators

The following code using Lambda with vector iterators compiles without complaint: vector<char> v; find_if(v.begin(), v.end(), _1 == 'x'); Ditto for this code, which uses istream_iterators: istream_iterator<char> b1(cin); istream_iterator<char> e1; find_if(b1, e1, _1 == 'x'); But the same code with istreambuf_iterators gets rejected: istreambuf_iterator<char> b2(cin); istreambuf_iterator<char> e2; find_if(b2, e2, _1 == 'x'); Error messages from VC8 and gcc 4.1.1 are below. Am I doing something wrong, is there a bug in Lambda regarding istreambuf_iterators, or is this a restriction that I didn't see documented somewhere? I have been finding that the boost::tuple library is so convenient that I am concerned I may be overusing it. For example, in situations where I might use a struct I am tend to prefer a tuple. program_options error class

In the latest implementation of boost (1.34), the error class in boost::program_options is defined as a subclass of std::logic_error. This is, however, not stated in the documentation. In the documentation the class error is described as if it has no superclass from which it inherits. In my programs, can I safely rely on the fact that error inherits from std::logic_error, and so comfortably use the what() function to extract the error messages? I've removed the using namespace boost from the astar graph cities example. (I prefer to define namespaces explicitly). //using namespace boost; I've added boost:: to all the type names and it all compiles fine. However, some functions compile without the namespace. ie the following line: WeightMap weightmap = get(boost::edge_weight, g); Can someone please explain why I dont need a boost:: infront of the get?

Hi, all I was playing around with iostreams recently, and I found that some examples of iostreams include the header file: boost/iostreams/stream_facade.hpp But I cannot find this header any where. I noticed that in the 1.34 release, iostreams is entirely outdated, and I waited until 1.34.1, but this mysterious header is still missing. I apologize if the file just stands right there but somehow I managed to miss it. Also, I think there should be a Jamfile to compile and test the examples. The documentation is pretty useful but well organized and offers many code snippet but never a compilable example as a whole. Fortunately the test cases offered many useful use cases :-) Cheers Cheng

Hi, I'm relativly new user of Boost and up to this point I haven't any problems. Building and using the library with MSVC 8 hasn't cause any problems to me. Now I'm trying to compile Boost 1.34.1 with the Intel 9.1 compiler but I'm getting very strange compilation errors. [asio] best strategy for creating lots of timers

Hi. I'm writing an application that uses many timers in many places. I'd like to use asio::deadline_timer for this purpose, and an asio::deadline_timer requires an instance of asio::io_service to function. The easy way to do it is to create an asio::io_service along side with each instance of deadline_timer. However, I fear that this is may be wasteful in terms of OS resources. So my first question is whether this is true. If that's true, then I'm not creating an io_service for each deadline_timer, so I must be sharing a single io_service by several timers. The problem with such a solution is that the io_service doesn't know about the timers using it, and especially, it doesn't know how many such timer there are at any given point in time, and if there are any. If the number of timers is zero, then there is no work to be done by the io_service, and the thread calling io_service::run() will be released. This is bad, because when a new timer will be created, it will require that there will be a thread calling io_service::run(). So what's the best solution? One possible way is to accompany each io_service with a dummy deadline_timer that will never expire (expires_from_now(infinity)). This will cause the io_service to not release its thread, until that dummy timer is cancel()ed. Another way is to wrap the call to io_service::run() with a loop that checks a whether it should call run() or wait until some new timer is added (using a boost::condition). There might be other options in addition to these two. What do you think? Yuval

Compile error using boost::variant

Hello, We have the following problem with compiling a piece of code using the Intel 9.1 compiler. The compiler can map the constructor of type_v2 on more than one overloaded constructor of the boost::variant, while in our opinion it should not even concider to use the one that first creates a temporary object (see compiler output). The VC7.1 compiler and the GCC compiler both compile this code correctly. Can someone help us out with this problem? Or does someone has a workaround for this? I notice that there is no implementation for Itanium CPU with aCC compiler. Does someone working of this issue? [boost][program options] Reading an INI file

Hello All! Is it possible to parse an INI file with the program options without specifying what is in the INI file first (using options_descriptions)? I already use the program_options library to handle command line and config file based options, but what I'm looking for now is a more traditional ini file interaction. By that I mean where you simply read in the ini file and then can access the category/entry value with something like: INIFile iniFile("MyINIFile.ini"); int myInt = iniFile["Category"]["EntryName"].get<int>(3); // 3 is the default if entry not found In my case, these are options that the user does not need to know about and can only be specified through the configuration file. Therefore, much of the data that is in the options_description is redundant. I've been looking around, and it seems that the parse_config_file() is the standard function to call to parse an INI file, however, that takes an options_description object as the second parameter. I did see in boost/program_options/detail/config_file.hpp where it talks about being able to read standard ini files and how the sections and entries are accessed. Unfortunately, that's buried in the "details" and I don't see any part of the public interface that would allow me to access the ini file. I did read a little about the property_tree library, but that is only available in CVS and I would prefer to stick with one library to handle the program's configuration. Similarly, I have seen plenty of other config libraries out there, but I would prefer to stick with program_options if it can do the job. Thanks for any help! Boost.signals has no shared_connection

Dear all, I was playing with Boost.Signals and stumbles across a problem which required something like the equivalent of a shared_connenction, i.e. the last reference to it will finally disconnent. This can of course be simulated with a boost::shared_ptr<scoped_connection>, but native support for it is always preferable. The use is that some change manager returns a connection which goes through several application layers. The time the connection finally arives at destination, it has felt multiple ctor's and dtors: View::View(Doc* p) : m_con(p->Register(&OnUpdate) { } shared_connection Doc::Register(void (View::* pmf)(), View* p) { return m_pCm->Register(pmf, p) } etc.. Hi, Is there a way, using SFINAE tricks and potentially the techniques used in the Boost Concept Check Library, to detect at compile-time if a type T supports a certain expression? In my case, I'm interested if T supports operator ==. iterator_facade and custom reference types

hi I am struggling with iterator_face. I have a container of bits with a smart reference type. This is because the exposed type is bool, but there is never a full boolean variable around for an index, just a single bit. So whenever a reference to a bool is requested I want to pass my smart reference that knows how to get and set this bit. But iterator_facade is too smart for this: it wants to make a true reference to a supplied Value type, which results in references to temporaries. Is there any way to tell iterator_facade to use my type as a ref type? Daniel Oberhoff

[program_options] incorrect documentation

In the documentation for program_options, under the "Library Overview"/"Syntactic Information", the documentation appears to be incorrect. For the following option description: ("verbose", value<string>()->zero_tokens(), "verbosity level") It states that: "the user may either provide a single token for the value, or no token at all." I wrote a test program based on the options given in this section of the manual, and I get different behavior for the 'verbose' option. In fact, the actual behavior is almost intuitive: the option is unusable. No matter what you do, its an error. Seems natural since you're saying the option has a value associated with it, yet no tokens may be given to specify the value. Hi, I have some troubles in compiling the following simple code, tboost.hpp, tboost.cpp The problem is always from the declaration of array_type A(boost::extents[2000000][1]); in the header file. Error message from compiling, In file included from tboost.cpp:2: tboost.h:14: error: `extents' has not been declared boost.h:14: error: ISO C++ forbids declaration of `parameter' with no type If I define array_type A(boost::extents[2000000][1]); in the source code tboost.cpp, it will compile successfully. Hi, Following on from this posting: http://lists.boost.org/boost-users/2007/02/25361.php I am having the same problem with program_options using std::string, compiling my code with gcc-4.0, using Xcode 2.2.1 on Mac OS X 10.4.9. Forcing -fvisibility=default onto the command line does not fix the problem. Do I need to rebuild the libraries with this flag (and if so, how?), or can somebody offer any other suggestions?
