Hello people! I am a new boost user, and I am trying to implement a console for a game, which binds console commands to functions. These functions can come from different objects and this is why I decided to try using boost. I am using Visual Studio 8.0 SP1. I have something like this: //all functions are of generic structure //the return nothing and they take a vector of arguments typedef boost::function1< void, std::vector<std::string>& > funcHolder; //I also have a hash table, which holds function references and the //relative commands: std::map<std::string, funcHolder> commands; //Finally I have a function: void Console::addCommand(const String &command, funcHolder f) { std::map<String, funcHolder>::iterator t = commands.find(command); if(t == commands.end()) commands.insert( make_pair(command, f) ); else commands[command] = f; } All of these things are members of a Console class. So once I added these, I tried adding this line to the constructor: addCommand("clear", boost::bind(&Console::clear, this); //clear method void Console::clear( vector<std::string>& args ) { lines.clear(); } During compilation I get C4180 warnings. I have heard that those are due to VS8.0 SP1 compiler bugs, so I ignore them but then I get a following error: Project : error PRJ0002 : Error result 1 returned from 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\VC\bin\cl.exe'. Compiler basically crashes. Any ideas what might be wrong? I thank everyone in advance, Artyom

[Boost.Serialization] code works with gcc 4.1.2 but does not compile with gcc 3.3.3

I have written code to serialize a class hierarchy (with lots of shared_ptrs, strings, vectors etc.). This compiles (and works) on gcc 4.1.2 (OpenSuse 10.3). When trying to compile it on an older machine (gcc 3.3.3) I am getting lots of compiler errors which seem to boil down to the issue the the (de)serialization code fails to instantiate some abstract class in the hierarchy. I understand that instantiating these classes has to fail, what I do not understand is why the same code compiles with gcc 4.1.2... any ideas? No, I don't see this example, I was reading the documentation and example about regex iterator and not regex token iterator. I search on other website but don't find this example. I will study it. Hello; I try to extract an url from a webpage and it's almostly done but completly unoptimised : Before I try with a regex iterator. But I don't understand the documentation. I past to many time on this way, so I try an other way : I get my webpage with libcurl then I replace all " " by a "\n" like that : string::size_type i = 0; while (( i = page_a_analyser.find(' ', i ) ) != (string::npos)) { page_a_analyser.replace(i++, 1, "\n" ); } then I apply the regex : boost::regex rexp(".*(http:\\/\\/.+)\"*.*"); and I get this result : http://www.nolife-tv.com/" http://www.nolife-tv.com"> http://www.nolife-tv.com/images/stories/noiz/1.jpg" http://www.nolife-tv.com/component/option,com_poll/task,results/id,16/Itemi…';" http://www.joomla.org" http://www.google-analytics.com/urchin.js" http://www.omniture.com and so on... Hi, If I create a new class, my_class, am I allowed to mark it as follows: BOOST_CLASS_IMPLEMENTATION ( my_class , boost::serialization::primitive_type ) The comments in level.hpp say that it won't call serialization code, thus I believe (and experience) that I don't need to provide either: template<class Archive> void my_class::serialize(Archive &ar, const unsigned int version) or template<class Archive> void serialize(Archive &ar, my_class &t, const unsigned int version) The comments also say that 'It presumes a member function or template in the archive class that can handle this type.' Does this mean that current archives (text, xml, and binary) are not able to use new primitive types without altering the archive to handle the new primitive? As I try it, both the text and xml archives use stream operators to convert my_class to a string and archive that. The binary archive casts my_class to a void* and outputs sizeof(my_class) bytes to the archive. It this expected behavior? Thanks, Andy.

[Serialization] Strange crash with binary_iarchive

Hello, I am getting a crash in my application when reading from a binary archive created using boost serialization. From a small test application, with identical code, I can read this archive fine. But when I put the same code into into my main application, I get the crash shown in the stack below. Since I am not getting a crash for a simple test application, I am unable to provide a simple code example to the crash. I would appreciate any hints on why this can happen. As far as I understand, the compiler options are the same. Could this be due to a difference in MS RT libs linked to? Any debugging ideas welcome. Hello, I have the problem with the vertex structure definition. I don´t know, how to create graph with variable vertices count without vertices renaming. Source graph: (n=5 vertices) Edges { E(130, 27), E(1, 83), E(1, 204), E(27, 1), E(27, 130), E(83, 204), E(204, 130)}; To find minimal spannig tree using Prim leeds to vertices renaming <0,n-1>. Renamed graph: Edges { E(0, 2), E(1, 3), E(1, 4), E(2, 1), E(2, 0), E(3, 4), E(4, 0)}. But it is very uncomfortable. How could I use original vertices number in graph definition? Hello, i am new to c++ coding and for practicing i want to rewrite some of my old perl scripts that use regular expressions in c++. So i installed libboost for regex version 1.34.1 on my workstation (using a kubuntu package). I have looked and looked and looked... sorry to ask what must be a very newbie question, but I can't find an answer anywhere in the documentation. How does one go about compiling boost with stlport? My platform is windows xp sp2, visual studio 8.0. Also, is it even worthwhile to do so? We are seeing significant slowdowns in our code due to what we think is lock contention in the standard library that ships with visual studio 8.0, so we are looking for alternatives. Does STLport run better in a multithreaded environment than the stl that comes with visual studio 8.0? Thanks.

Boost semaphore with condition variable

Hi! I have a quite simple problem, but I still lack a nice implementation in C++ with boost. My problem is, that I have two threads A and B and thread A needs some information that B will calculate at runtime. Therefore I need some kind of synchronization. So my first attempt was to use a mutex and a condition variable: Thread A: boost::thread::mutex::scoped_lock lock ( mMutex ); mConditionVar.wait ( lock ); Thread B: mConditionVar.notify_one (); This works nice as long as thread A already started waiting on the condition before thread B finished providing it. Otherwise the notify will be lost. So my second attempt was to use a barrier: Init barrier with count 2 Thread A: mBarrier.wait (); Thread B: mBarrier.wait (); This works fine and A will wait until the result is available and it doens't matter if it starts waiting before or after B finished calculaating. But the problem now is that B also needs to wait for A to reach the point in execution. So if I just want to signal thread A from thread B that some point was reached. I don't know how to do it with boost. If I would have a semaphore available I could init it with 0 and thread A tries to decrement it while thread B will increment it once it reached the point. But http://www.boost.org/doc/html/thread/faq.html#id1747096 says: "Semaphore was removed as too error prone. The same effect can be achieved with greater safety by the combination of a mutex and a condition variable." So how exactly is this achieved with the mutex and condition variable? I always only come up with a mutex, condition variable and a bool which all three must be shared between both threads. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions! Thanks, Fabian

Hello, I've developed small application which has a few threads. So far I'm using only single CPU (one core) and my question is: what will happen if I'm using more CPUs (or cores)? Whether threads will be automatically executed on different CPUs in parallel or not? If not what is a solution to run them in parallel? Now that VS 2008 has been released via MSDN, I'm attempting to see if our app compiles and works using it. Following the instructions here ( http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.lib.boost.user/27205/focus=27207 ) got boost compiled but the auto-link was still looking for vc80 in the library names. Adding the following to \boost\config\auto_link.hpp fixed the link issue #elif defined(BOOST_MSVC) && (BOOST_MSVC == 1400) // vc80: # define BOOST_LIB_TOOLSET "vc80" #elif defined(BOOST_MSVC) && (BOOST_MSVC >= 1500) // vc90: # define BOOST_LIB_TOOLSET "vc90" At this point everything appears to run. hello, I intend to use boost/date_time. As a header-only lib. I normally don't need to link against any extra lib. By default, the intel compiler generates the following: 1>Linking... (Intel C++ Environment) 1>xilink: executing 'link' 1>LINK : fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'libboost_date_time-iw-mt-1_34_1.lib' It is the same problem as in http://lists.boost.org/Archives/boost/2004/08/70114.php which i don't see whether it was solved after all or not. serialization, iostreams and gzip compression to ostringstream

I have the following code serialising shared_ptr's to fstream and reading them back correctly. When I switch to using a stringstream (invert comments) I get a null value in "str" following serialisation. I noticed someone had a similar issue previously and solved it (but didn't explain how). Serialising/de-serialising between stringstream works fine when the iostreams are avoided. Could someone point out what I'm doing wrong please? My layer is a middleware. Each time I have something interesting, like data or events, I call a user-supplied handler on a corresponding method from a react method of the state machine. If the user wants to close the connection I have the problem I described because: - either he decides to close the connection from a callback, which means the state machine is in the middle of processing the event which caused the call to the handler, then I must use post_event - or he decided to close the connection based on an event that didn't come from the connection, in that case I must use process_event. I simplified the problem but the idea is there. If my state machine calls a handler on which I don't have total control, and I supply a few methods that need to be processed using the state machine, then I need to decide between process and post_event. In the simple case I could also provide 2 close methods for the handler, one that must be called in callbacks and one for the other methods of handler. I don't think this is a clean way to solve this issue. Each method in my interface would have 2 versions, and the stability becomes really weak because calling the wrong method at the wrong place results in a crash. At this point, maybe my design is weak, and I shouldn't call the handlers callback directly from the react methods. Instead I could use an event queue to talk to the handler. In the react method I would post events to the queue, and make sure I dequeue it from outside the state machine. But it involves (much) more work... I have just replaced some vector< vector< vector<T> > > by a multi_array and I have seen a huge time penalty. I looked further in the documentation and discovered the BOOST_DISABLE_ASSERTS macro which did not really improved the speed. What's the complexity of accessing a property bundle for an adjacency list? Does it change as the user changes the selector for the vertex list structure (vecS vs. listS, etc.)? I could imagine property access being constant-time for vecS vertex lists, because the vertex space can be represented with a dense set of numbers corresponding to the vertex's position in the vector. The property map can thus be a simple vector or even a C array indexed by vertex number. With listS, on the other hand, it's hard to see how one could get constant-time property map lookup. I have a problem where vertex property lookup happens very frequently. What kind of tradeoffs should I be thinking about? -Dave

Hi, When creating a 'SharedMemory File', is there a way to specify the 'Path' where the file should be created? Right now, it is created by default in the Temp folder local machines. In case of a 'Citrix Machine' I am not able to figure out where this file is created? Hi, I face a speed problem. I need a uniform distribution of integers between 0 and N, N around 10^11. I tried 2 methods with very high speed efficiency difference (time x8). The 1st one is based on uniform_smallint (the slowest method) and the 2nd one is based on a real distribution casted to an integer. Is there a problem with the 2nd method which is much quicker? Hi, I'm trying to use a offset_ptr<volatile int> to point to a piece of shared memory that can be changed by another process without other synchronization mechanisms. But I get this kind of errors: offset_ptr.hpp:116: error: invalid conversion from 'volatile void*' to 'const void*' offset_ptr.hpp:116: error: initializing argument 1 of 'void boost::interprocess::offset_ptr<T>::set_offset(const void*) [with PointedType = volatile int]' Basically it is not possible to call set_offset when the pointed type is volatile. Is this a feature or a bug? (If it is a bug I'll happily enter it into trac). Lars

Boost Filesystem Error, am I Linking?

More trouble. Eclipse CDT tells me that when I try and use boost::filesystem::initial_path<boost::filesystem::path>() that in include/boost/filesystem/operations.hpp on line 503 that I have a "undefined reference to 'boost::filesystem::detail::get_current_path_api(std::string&)'" I went to Google and found a forum thread where the person wasn't linking against Boost's Filesystem library. I looked in the lib/ section under my MinGW installation, however, and found libboost_filesystem.a, right where it should be. Is there still the potential for it to not be linking, or am I just not using something correctly? I tried a simpler usage of the same function and got the same problem. I should warn you, I'm still rather green at C++, all my previous programming training being in Java. I'm still getting acclimated to C++, pretty quickly, but still every once in a while I run into a wall and need someone to pick me up and steer me in the right direction, so to speak. Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

Hi, I have a java application which does PDF Priting which I can execute like java -classpath <path to lib> PDFPrinter <filename> <printername> <Copies> <Orinetation> This works well on windows and linux. I want to execute the same from C++ code which will spool a new process and execute this. I am having a windows service which will actually perform this. I need help for a) Spooling a new process using boost so that it works for Windows and Linux. b) Security issues like under windows service will be running under account 'SYSTEM' new process spooled will be again under SYSTEM user hence what all is needed to make sure System has access to printers and/or specific printer. Note: I have tried std::system but again it behaves different for c++ console application and c++ service under windows. Thanks

I am currently working on a mathematical library for the simulation of stochastic processes. I am a researcher in Statistics, hence my limited skills in c++ programming :) Let me introduce the framework briefly. The part of the library I am interested with is very similar to the boost random library. I need to implement it because I need to extend some functionality and I am not confident in modifying the boost random library to extend its behaviour (too complicated for me :P). We have (lazy syntax): PseudoRng<TImpl> //A particular pseduo random number generator QuasiRng<TImpl> // A particualr quasi random number generator GaussianDistribution // A particular statistical distribution Sampler<GaussianDistribution> // The interface (for other components of the library) of a sampler of random numbers distributed as a GaussianDistribution Then I consider: template < class TGenerator, class TDistribution, typename TDistribution::variate_t (TDistribution::*algorithm)( const TGenerator& ) const = &TDistribution::sample_default > class VariateSampler : public Sampler<TDistribution> { ... } Here TGenerator can be PseudoRng<TImpl> or QuasiRng<TImpl>, TDistribution can be GaussianDistribution and the pointer to member function algorithm select the algorithm used to sample. While constructing VariateSampler I would like to: 1) Automatically deduce the type of TGenerator and TDistribution 2) Automatically select a different default for algorithm, for particular TDistribution (like GaussianDistribution,PoissonDistribution....) depending on the fact that TGenerator is of type PseudoRng<TImpl> or QuasiRng<Timpl>. So for every TDistribution two different defaults for algorithm. I think that boost parameter should solve my problem, but I am quite confused about how to implement it, expecially the second point. Hi, Right now I'm trying to overload the [] twice, however after compilation is done only one of the overloads will actually exist at runtime: template< unsigned int t_number > struct foo { t_type data[10]; t_type& operator[] ( unsigned int index ) { return data[index]; } }; In the structure above, I have only shown 1 array index operator just as an example. I want to define two overloads with the following conditions: 1) If t_number is equal to 1, enable_if will allow the first overload for the array operator. 2) If t_number is greater than 1, enable_if will allow the second overload for the array operator. Is there some sort of is_less_than or is_equal objects in boost I can use with enable_if for my operator overloads? Thanks.

Hello, I have a question regarding the warning that I get when I compile a program using boost::ublas library. I have to say that I'm not really experienced programmer so I might be doing something really stupid... Anyway, I'm using WinXP with Mingw 3.4.5 and boost 1.34-1. Ok....this is really confusing. I successfully created a small test project several months ago using the Boost Serialization library to serialize some binary data. Setup for MinGW/EasyEclipse

I know this is rather menial to be asking for assistance on, but I'm stuck and don't want to proceed and make a mistake. I'm rather sick of messing up with simple library setup things, and want to get down and dirty with some code soon! So if you could be so kind as to help me understand what to do I'd really appreciate it. I've got to make Boost work on Microsoft Windows XP SP2, using the MinGW libraries that came with EasyEclipse C/C++. However, the getting started documentation on Boost.org only discusses how to make Boost work for MSVC, which doesn't help me all too much. If some kind person could help this tired programmer, I'd really appreciate it! I used Google, but I didn't find anything terribly definitive. If only Windows could be more like Linux, and all I'd have to do is something cool like wgm install boost-dev... but then it wouldn't be Windows, would it? Anyways, thanks in advance for any help anyone can render me!

Hello, in order to make a hierarchy: I have a set of vertices that are separated in disjoint sets of increasing size (2^s), called scales: scale 0,1,2... The vertices at scale s are used also at scale s+1and a graph is build at each scale using all the vertices of smaller scales. Therefore I would like to build an adjacency list like structure that can store multiple neighbor lists per vertex: one per scale the vertex belongs to. Because of compiler issues, and reasons too numerous to be listed here, for this problem I'm currently stuck using MSVC 7.1, with the Boost Graph Library 1_31. I'm having a syntax problem that I thought someone could help me with. I'm trying to use the graph coloring algorithm by calling sequential_vertex_coloring. However I ran into some problems and I can not find the answers either on the Internet nor on this mailing list. The problem at hand concerns the multiindex container and bind. circular_buffer iterator validation

Hi, One more question, what is the rule for circular buffer iterator validation ? Though I had gone through the document, and which gives some rule related to this, I need to know a few thing like this , I have a buffer which has enough memory to store all, the elements I push onto it. Thus no memory re-allocation is needed (it is fixed buffer, not the space optimized one), and no memory overwriting when it is full, and thus no debug time assert due to that. int_buf buf(5); buf.push_back(1); buf.push_back(2); int_buf::const_iterator ite = buf.end(); int_buf::const_iterator itb = ite-2; buf.push_back(3); buf.push_back(4); std::for_each(itb,ite,std::cout<<_1<<"\t"); This case, I expect the iterators should not be invalidated, and print 1 2 However it prints 1 2 3 4. Why it is so ? I need to push a few elements at a time to the buffer, and store a boost::sub_range for this eg itb ,ite. and pop_front the same chunk. I can make ensure that the buffer never gets full. WIll it be possible in any way to store such iterator pair (I can't do this to deque as that allocates memory and invalidates iterators)? Any other way the same can be achieved (eg using some container aware iterator pair, or container adapter)? I am also interested to the same for circular_buffer_space_optimized, where memory allocation might occur, when minimum memory limit is exhausted, but can ensure that never it is full (i.e no overwrite occurs). any boost library will help for that , where iterator invalidation occurs only due to memory movement, not due to invalid element location? MPL Map of types to integral values

Hi, I'm looking for a complete compile-time constant map container that uses types as keys and integral constants as values. For example: typedef map< pair<float, 90>, pair<unsigned int, 3> > mapType; unsigned int value = get_value<mapType, float>::value; The above code is PSEUDO CODE only. It is supposed to give you an idea of what I'm looking for. I tried using boost::fusion::map, however the fusion::pair object expects a TYPE as the second template argument, so I can't specify integral values. Could someone provide a code example that achieves the above? Note that I should be able to do the following as well: typedef map< pair<float, 90>, pair<unsigned int, 3> > mapType; class foo { // This would result in 'value' being the integral number 90. static const unsigned int value = get_value<mapType, float>::value; }

Respected Sir, I am using boost::circular_buffer in my program. It uses Visual Studio 7.1 . Apparently it seems, a friend declaration is missing, which causes the error in iterator to const iterator conversion through iterator(const nonconst_self& it) constructor conversion , where it tries to access it.m_it private variable. My second question is, is it valid to pass a const & a non const iterator to any function such as std::for_each, where both const iterators are required. [boostbook] Building Boost documentation

Because I wanted to read documentation on some of the new libraries in the latest Boost SVN repository, which existed only in XML format, it was time to go through the annual rite of attempting to use Doug Gregor's excellent documention of "The Boostbook Documentation Format" in order to setup the documentation system to generate documentation using bjam. Although Mr. Gregor's documentation is extremely good, I have never been completely successful in the past, but I had my fingers crossed in hopeful expectation this time. I am doing this on Windows so I have to set things up manually. 1) I downloaded xsltproc and doxygen successfully, and "installed" them into appropriate directories and, to make things easy for myself, put those directories in my PATH. 2) After making sure I had no .jam file of any kind in my home directory I went to the \tools\build\v2\user-config,jam in the directory in which the latest Boost Subversion resides, and added the line: using xsltproc ; 3) I downloaded the latest XSL stylesheets and Docbook DTD and put them in their own separate directies, "E:\Utilities\docbook-xsl-1.73.2" and "E:\Utilities\docbook-dtd-4.2". 4) I added to my user-config.jam the lines: # BoostBook configuration using boostbook : E:/Utilities/docbook-xsl-1.73.2 : E:/Utilities/docbook-dtd-4.2 ; 5) Now further following instructions to test out my installation so far I went to the \libs\function\doc after copying boostbook.css from the \doc\html directory, and tried the bjam command. HOW TO: Building flexible structure definitions

Hi, Right now I'm trying to develop a tricky structure that MAY contain any of the following information: - Vertex coordinates (x,y,z) - Color components (r, g, b) - Texture coordinates (u, v) Basically, I'd end up having a structure that looks like this (with all information included): struct Vertex { float x,y,z; // vertex coordinates unsigned char r, g, b; // color components double u,v; // texture coordinates }; The tricky part is that the user isn't required to create a structure with all of this information. For example, the structure above could be missing texture coordinates, color coordinates, or both (however the vertex coordinates are required since I doubt we care about empty structs)! This is for OpenGL vertex buffers, so in addition to this information we need to be able to specify some information in this structure that tells external classes a little bit more about itself. Note that this information CANNOT modify the size of the Vertex structure and must be compile-time only. For example: struct Vertex { // Information (does not change size). Problems with regex, using 1.34.1 version but asking for 1.31

Hi all, I'm very newbie with boost and regex library. First I downloaded the latest version and compiled it for Visual Studio .NET 2003, the compilation went smooth but when I try to compile a minimal program it says: expressions_regulars fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'libboost_regex-vc71-sgd-1_31.lib'. I only have *1_34_1.lib files. Searching a bit more, I found the binary installer, so I removed everything from my manual compilation and installed it. When I try to compile, again the same message. I don't understand anything, any idea? [condition] How to wait on multiple mutexes with OR semantics?

Hello boosters, Let's say I have a 2 condition variables, and 2 threads that wait on them. I would like to collapse these 2 threads into 1 by making thread wait on *either* of these conditions to lock their mutexes (it is not the same mutex). Library naming conventions

Hi, Can anyone explain why some libraries created and installed by the build process do not have the boost version number in their names as mentioned in the getting started document? This causes a problem when I build 1_34_1 and install it to the default C:\Boost directory. I have 1_33_1 installed there for projects that will not be updated soon. The 1_34_1 build/install copies files such as boost_date_time-vc71-mt.lib. These files already exist as created by the 1_33_1 build. The file is identical to boost_date_time-vc71-mt-1_34_1.lib, so would imagine I could simply ignore it as long as the automatic linking feature would never use it. The same occurs on linux. For instance libboost_date_time-gcc32-1_34_1.a is identical to libboost_date_time-gcc32.a Thanks, bkash

Strange (wrong?) behavior of boost::regex_replace()

The program below gives different output in Boost 1.32.0 compared to 1.33.1 and 1.34.1. In my opinion "R_Test" would be the correct result and therefore Boost 1.33.1 and 1.34.1 would be wrong. Can anyone clarify this issue? [gil] Cannot read jpeg file

Hi there, this is most likely off-topic. But I'm a little desperate, though please excuse me. I try to load a jpeg file using gil's io extension. But it always fails. Every time when I try to execute jpeg_read_header my app crashes due to some memory exception. At this point the file is already open and yes, it's jpeg file. I'm using Visual Studio 2005 with plenty of memory. Does anyone has any idea? It must be something really simple but I can't see right now. Thanks, Christian

I can't figure out how to make a writable transform_iterator work. I would suggest introduction of (template) functions that would return "begin" and "end" directory iterators. I think that it's clearer to see: for_each(directory_begin( dir_path ), directory_end(), do_something()); than for_each(directory_iterator( dir_path ), directory_iterator(), do_somethig()); The functions directory_begin()/directory_end() would mimic the convenient container.begin()/container.end() functions used in STL. I know that it's merely a decoration but so is std::make_pair. Boost semaphore with condition variable

Hi! I have a quite simple problem, but I still lack a nice implementation in C++ with boost. My problem is, that I have two threads A and B and thread A needs some information that B will calculate at runtime. Therefore I need some kind of synchronization. So my first attempt was to use a mutex and a condition variable: Thread A: boost::thread::mutex::scoped_lock lock ( mMutex ); mConditionVar.wait ( lock ); Thread B: mConditionVar.notify_one (); This works nice as long as thread A already started waiting on the condition before thread B finished providing it. Otherwise the notify will be lost. So my second attempt was to use a barrier: Init barrier with count 2 Thread A: mBarrier.wait (); Thread B: mBarrier.wait (); This works fine and A will wait until the result is available and it doens't matter if it starts waiting before or after B finished calculaating. But the problem now is that B also needs to wait for A to reach the point in execution. So if I just want to signal thread A from thread B that some point was reached . I don't know how to do it with boost. If I would have a semaphore available I could init it with 0 and thread A tries to decrement it while thread B will increment it once it reached the point. But http://www.boost.org/doc/html/thread/faq.html#id1747096 says: "Semaphore was removed as too error prone. The same effect can be achieved with greater safety by the combination of a mutex and a condition variable." So how exactly is this achived with the mutex and condition variable. I always only come up with a mutex, condition variable and a bool which all three must be shared between both threads. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions! Thanks, Fabian

pulling my hair out over Leopard

Hi everyone, I'm trying to get leopard and boost to play nice, so that I can use dicomlib for another app. Apparently, dicom lib requires boost, because it gives 116 error messages if you try to compile in xcode without it. To repro: 1) download dicomlib from http://dicomlib.swri.ca/joomla/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=26&fu… 2) put those files into an xcode project 3) watch as they don't compile with 116 errors all related to boost I've tried: 1) including the boost header files in the xcode project. xcode doesn't care unless I change all the < to ", which is painful, time consuming, and frankly, stupid. 2) installing boost at /usr/local/include using ./configure make sudo make install as an administrator. Of course, the boost library is handily titled 'boost-1_34_1' instead of something like 'boost', which means that I have to soft link it using ln -s. Neither the regular install nor the ln option gets around the 115 compile errors. 3) I tried bjam -sTOOLS=darwin and bjam -sTOOLS=darwin -sBUILD=framework, neither of which work, both of which give errors that ld -h is an unrecongized option. I don't know where the linker options are defined, so maybe just getting rid of -h would do it, but that switch probably means something, so just wholesale removing a compiler switch may not be the best move. So here's the real question: How do I make this work? I've lost about 24 hours to this, and I just don't see how it's gonna work. In the meantime, I'm guessing I'm gonna go with http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/math_science/quickdicomtoolkit.html but knowing my luck, that will require something similar as well.... [BGL] Problem while "clearing" a graph

Containers are boost:vecS for both vertices and edges. When I have 100 vertices in my graph, I catch an unhandeld exception with catch(...) ("i" is printed only unitl 50), and, when my graph contains only 3 nodes, a std::exception is catched with this message : "vector<T> too long". Can you help ? Regards.

In a project using JUCE (http://www.rawmaterialsoftware.com) I want to serialize the juce::String, preferably so it's equivalent of serializing std::wstring. How would I go about doing a wrapper for it so boost::serialization can serialize it nicely? TIA /Rob

Hello everybody, I begin with C++ and need to use some regex in my program. [boost] boost::function regression in 1.34.0 wrt -fno-exceptions

Hi, Upto boost 1.33.x, I could compile my program with the gcc option -fno-exceptions. Since boost 1.34.0, this is no longer possible due to code changes in operator= in boost/function/function_template.hpp The following snippets fail to compile: Line 561-571: operator=(Functor BOOST_FUNCTION_TARGET_FIX(const &) f) { this->clear(); try { this->assign_to(f); } catch (...) { vtable = 0; throw; } return *this; } and lines 589-602: // Assignment from another BOOST_FUNCTION_FUNCTION BOOST_FUNCTION_FUNCTION& operator=(const BOOST_FUNCTION_FUNCTION& f) { if (&f == this) return *this; this->clear(); try { this->assign_to_own(f); } catch (...) { vtable = 0; throw; } return *this; } The 1.33.0 and older versions used swap() instead of this try / catch / throw construct. These versions also used the boost::throw_exception function instead of a plain throw. Any rationale for this decision ? Should some/all boost functions compile exception free as well ? [ptr_container] Using bind with ptr_map

Is there a way to use bind with ptr_map? The following fails to compile (but does work with std::map): typedef boost::ptr_map<int,int> TESTMAP; boost::bind( &TESTMAP::value_type::first, _1 ); This errors with pointer to reference member is illegal (C2634 in VC++ 8). Strangely enough this also generates an internal compiler error in VC++ 8 (along with the proper error messages). But that's another story. -- Bill --

Boost.Date_Time and quarters, incomplete (or unknown) dates

Is there special support in Boost.Date_Time to support quarters, or (just) years? Consider the following scenario: I have a customer (or patient) whose (exact) date of birth is not known, only that 'he was born in 1960' or in 'May 1960' (w/o attached information on month or days). Is there another way to handle this (and preserve knowledge about the incomplete information) besides pretending that month (and perhaps even day) is 1 and storing additional flags about the information being not actually present? Hello all, I am getting close to having the Dataflow library ready to be submitted for review, and would like to respark some interest. The current version of the library offers a generic layer for dataflow programming that can be applied to various data transport mechanisms, and a Dataflow.Signals support layer for Boost.Signals that provides a number of general-purpose components and easy connectability. In the near future I will try to put together more real-world examples of how this library can be useful, but for now the docs have two possibly interesting examples: * an example of how to provide a support layer for another mechanism, with VTK as the victim. * an example of how to use the Dataflow.Signals layer with Boost.Asio and Boost.Serialization to make a distributed dataflow network. The docs are uploaded to: http://dancinghacker.com/code/dataflow/ Code is available from the boost sandbox (SOC/2007/signals), as well as the boost vault (Dataflow directory). All tests (with 1 exception) pass on GCC 4.0.1/darwin and MSVC8. The docs (and the library to some extent) still need work, but I hope what's out there is good enough to paint a picture of what this library is about and how it might be useful. undefined reference to `boost::system::get_system_category()'

I just moved to using boost_asio_0_3_8 because of issues with asio_0_3_7's macro redefinition of FD_SETSIZE. Now, there's no issue with compiling the source, however while linking I get an error saying: undefined reference to `boost::system::get_system_category()' I see from the source that classes "posix_error_category" and "system_error_category" are defined in error_code.cpp (boost_asio_0_3_8/libs/system/src), but there's no actual library (*.so or *.a) to link to. I'm including /path/to/boost_asio_0_3_8 while compiling, but am not doing anything for linking, since all of the code (well almost, since error_code is a cpp file) is .hpp What am I doing wrong? Should I be including anything while linking? regs Vivek
