[boost any] casting problems (BUG?)

Hello *, I would like to ask the developers of boost::any if the ctor template in boost::any template<typename ValueType> any(const ValueType & value) : content(new holder<ValueType>(value)) { } is intentionally not marked as explicit. Today using boost::any_cast and with a std::map (mapping of some id to boost::any) iterator I was wondering why I got an exception when I found a correct any instance. My code looked like: map_type::const_iterator iter = map.find(Key); if(map.end()!=iter) return boost::any_cast<SomeResultType const&>(*iter); Unforturenately, I forgot that map iterator references a pair<KeyType, ValueType>. This cast caused the compiler to implicitly create a new const any type containing the dereferenced pair and throw an exception that my expected result type was wrong. I don't know which design rationale was intended when this ctor was not marked as explicit or if it is a bug. With Kind Regards, Ovanes BTW, I use boost 1.34.1 and vc 7.1.

Hey Ya Thanks for the quick reply. Well, it would be more complicated in the way that the only condition that would keep in the loop would be the number of threads already arrived on this condition (numberOfThreadsReady). As soon as all threads have arrived, this number is set back to zero, which would keep the threads waiting if they re-checked this condition. But I found out that Boost supports a much more suitable solution for this problem, namely the barrier class. And, concerning the use of a barrier, I trust I am not mistaken that there is no loop needed when calling barrier.wait(), or is there :) ? If so, that would call my complete understanding of the barrier mechanism into question :) . Originally compiled as a CLR program. Recompiling using native Win32 still gives a crash during program termination - in atomic_count_win32.hpp in operator-- (BOOST_INTERLOCKED_DECREMENT) Unhandled exception at 0x010752b9 in fly2.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation writing location 0x00779040. There is still the anomaly of release version being slower than debug. Compiled as release - the exception occurs in xmemory in _Destroy_range. I'll experiment using set_factory in Borland - although I have largely abandoned it's use, just can't compile enough of Boost to be useful now... Martin

Hey guys does anyone know any good template engine for c++. I mean not like c++ template programming but web template engine that are easy to use, works on multiple platform, etc... Example Smarty <http://www.smarty.net/> for php. Velocity <http://velocity.apache.org/> for java. Cheetah <http://www.cheetahtemplate.org/> for python. BGL - changing internal values of a graph

It may be a very stupid problem (not even in BGL) but can you help me find out what's going on? Basically, the following part works while inside the function: if (found) { e = graph[pred]; cerr << "Old, pred: " << pred << " count: " << e.count << endl; e.count++; } I'm getting it again from the graph in order to assure it changed: boost::tie(pred, inserted) = add_edge(sub, obj, e, graph); e = graph[pred]; And even when using a new variable: boost::tie(pred, inserted) = add_edge(sub, obj, e, graph); Edge f; f = graph[pred]; My cerr still produces the correct value. But when I get it a few iterations later the value is 1 again. What's going on? Or better, how to change the value of the structure inside the graph? thanks, --renato

* What is your evaluation of the design? I like ability for the drop in replacement of const T (with assignability). It makes it easy to test whether it makes a big difference in run time scenarios, before committing to its use. I liked the policy based interface. * What is your evaluation of the implementation? I had a small hunt around the code and liked the modularity of it. A friend of mine railed against the default use of a static factory. He would prefer, by default, to control the lifetime of the factory, but that would make it harder for "drop in" usage, and there is the flexibility of overriding the holder class. * What is your evaluation of the documentation? I didn't read it all closely, but I certainly understood what the library was for and how to use it after viewing the docs. Of course, real world mileage will vary, but some performance indicators or at least discussion of the tradeoff of extra hashing vs reduced dynamic allocations would be useful, as well as any other performance impacts (how big should the data set be before using it, what percentage of unique values makes it worthwhile). * What is your evaluation of the potential usefulness of the library? Useful to have available. Unless there is a no brainer scenario, it seems that real world testing on live data will be needed to evaluate it's value in any given scenario? * Did you try to use the library? With what compiler? Did you have any problems? I didn't try the library, since I am not using 1.35. But I am keen to use it when 1.35 is released. * How much effort did you put into your evaluation? A moderate investigation. * Are you knowledgeable about the problem domain? I'd noticed a bit in the doc about initialisation - just my attempt to write a minimal test case got the better of me. Release is still slower than debug under MS - 60 cf 56s with my computer cranked up to full tilt.. Put that down to some dubious MS code generation. For comparison the example program took 927s for hashed factory when compiled as debug and 1365s when compiled as release (ok I didn't repeat the tests!) I'll have to get a smaller test file :-) Best wishes Martin

[multi-index] No constructor that takes allocator only

Joaquín, thanks so much for a wonderful library. I was wondering why there is no constructor that simply takes an allocator. This would make multi_index behave more like STD Library containers, which would aid me in allowing flexible storage options for generic algorithms. Is there a technical hurdle that makes this difficult to do? You currently provide: explicit multi_index_container( const ctor_args_list& args_list=ctor_args_list(), const allocator_type& al=allocator_type()); template<typename InputIterator> multi_index_container( InputIterator first,InputIterator last, const ctor_args_list& args_list=ctor_args_list(), const allocator_type& al=allocator_type()); Is it possible to also provide: explicit multi_index_container( const allocator_type& al=allocator_type()); ? Boost Format: format strings and character types

The documentation states that the same format string used with printf and boost::format should result in the same output in "almost all cases". My colleagues and I have found, though, that when a %d descriptor is used to print a char variable the result is as though a %c descriptor had been used -- printf and boost::format don't produce the same result. That is: int ii(42); char cc(42); printf( "Using printf: ii=%d, cc=%d\n", ii, cc ); cout << boost::format( "Using boost::format: ii=%d, cc=%d" ) % ii % cc << endl; Produces: Using printf: ii=42, cc=42 Using boost::format: ii=42, cc=* So, it seems that boost::format deduces the format to be used for outputting cc from its type and ignores the format explicitly requested in the format. Is this working as intended? If so the documentation seems to me to be misleading. I also note that: cout << boost::format( "As chars: ii=%c, cc=%c" ) % ii % cc << endl; Produces: As chars: ii=4, cc=* That is: the %c descriptor causes the value of ii (42) to be truncated to a single char. Also something of a surprise. My tests were carried out using boost 1.34.1 and Visual Studio 2005 on Windows. Cheers, Daniel.

Flyweight library

Took a look at the flyweight library. I'm very much a beginner - so not a formal review, just a couple of comments: I wrote a very simple test program to try flyweight. In essence: vector<boost::flyweight<string> > vec; struct Insert { void operator()(string s) { vec.push_back(boost::flyweight<string>(s)); //vec.push_back(s); } }; void Test() { fstream f("d:\\bible12.txt", ios_base::in); { boost::progress_timer t; for_each(istream_iterator<string>(f), istream_iterator<string>(), Insert()); } } This fails to compile with Borland Turbo C++ (internal compiler error) Under MS Visual C++ (Express 2008) it compiles ok. There is quite a performance hit over a standard vector<string> - 6s -> 80s in debug and 101s in release? From the docs I'd expected to just use copy and back_inserter? However, the showstopper for me at present is this crashes with: Managed Debugging Assistant 'FatalExecutionEngineError' has detected a problem in 'd:\Users\Martin\Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Projects\fly\Debug\fly.exe'. Additional Information: The runtime has encountered a fatal error. The address of the error was at 0x79e7352e, on thread 0x15d0. The error code is 0xc0000005. This error may be a bug in the CLR or in the unsafe or non-verifiable portions of user code. Common sources of this bug include user marshaling errors for COM-interop or PInvoke, which may corrupt the stack. Windows has triggered a breakpoint in fly.exe. This may be due to a corruption of the heap, which indicates a bug in fly.exe or any of the DLLs it has loaded. This may also be due to the user pressing F12 while fly.exe has focus. The output window may have more diagnostic information. On termination of the program. Have I misunderstood the usage of flyweight, or is there a problem here? Martin

Type_traits: is_convertible and std::pair problem

The type_traits library gives me somewhat erroneous answers when dealing with pairs of pairs. The following code produces the errors below, but interestingly, the BOOST_ASSERT actually succeeds. Is there a method of converting that is_convertible has in mind when it returns true for the aforementioned conversion? I'm testing here for simple implicit conversion... -v

Hi Boost Users, I am trying to compile Boost.Thread with BOOST_HAS_WINTHREADS. I compile the library by going to "\libs\thread\build" and running "bjam toolset=gcc-nocygwin -sBOOST_HAS_WINTHREADS=1", but whenever I try to use the library I get undefined references to pthread functions, so I think the macro BOOST_HAS_WINTHREADS is not being defined. Is there a problem with the way I am defining the macro? Is there another way I can try? Thank you, Anthony

Is it possible to define the thread as a class member, and start it later? If so, what would the syntax for this line be? If not, can you suggest an alternative structure? Thank you, Anthony

I have a problem that I would like to solve in the most generic non-intrusive way possible (such as boost serialization). What I want is to access class members both via it's initially designed accessors but also via a "const char *" key. In addition, I want to pass list of key's (via a vector of const char * or a single delimited multikey char *) to get nested member access. For example: ... // these should be equivalent Point p; int val; val = p.x; val = p.getX(); p.getMemberValue("x", val); // there also Rectangle r; int val; Point pVal; r.getMemberValue("corner:x", val); r.getMemberValue("corner", pVal); I thought about having a templated function similar to the serialize() function called 'getMemberValue()', where each 'if' block below could be wrapped into a MACRO taking just the member name. template< class T > bool getMemberValue(const char *key, T & value) { if(!strcmp(key, "member")) { value = this->member; return true; } return false; } This appears to work fine for one level deep but if I want the behavior such as the above rectangle example, I run into trouble. Building 64-bit Boost Libraries on Windows

I'm continuing to have trouble compiling 64-bit versions of the Boost libraries on Windows using VS2008. I've used a number of the tips posted online including: bjam --toolset=msvc-9.0 address-space=64 but watching the Task Manager I see that it always launches the 32-bit version of the compiler. Does someone have the correct BJAM command line to make this work? I'm using Boost 1.34.1 which I patched in a couple of places to have it recognize the 9.0 (internally version 15) VS 2008 toolset. [Filesystem] Crashes with global const path

Hello all, We have had problems with boost::path when used as a const global variable, using gcc on ARM Linux. Example code (typed in the the email so probably missing code, but this is the basic premise) #include <boost/filesystem/path.hhp> const boost::path test = "/usr/bin/whatever"; main() { //something } This crashes prior to getting to main, obviously whilst the path is being set up during initialisation. Is this a known problem? Is there a way round it? Have we misunderstood something important? I would like to see this into Boost, so I hope Tobias will update the library, given all this feedback, and I would suggest another review in 2-3 months. I'd like to be the review manager then as well, if Tobias will still want me. I think it has to do with how I'm creating my metafunctions. I'm still unclear about when the ::type suffix is needed (for the last parameter to mpl::fold<> for example) and whether I need an "apply" template somewhere in my struct's. Any help appreciated. v

Effects: Renames from_p to to_p, as if by POSIX rename(). Postconditions: !exists(from_p) && exists(to_p), and the contents and attributes of the file originally named from_p are otherwise unchanged. [Note: If from_p and to_p resolve to the same file, no action is taken. Otherwise, if to_p resolves to an existing file, it is removed. [pre-processor ] help needed

Hello *, I have some pre-processor sequence in form of: (X1) (X2) (X3) (X4) which is expanded by BOOST_PP_SEQ_FOR_EACH to template parameters: some_template<X1, X2, X3, X4> ... My problem now is that some of Xn parameters can be a template instantiation and that actually causes PP to think, that there are more parameters to the function applied by ..._SEQ_FOR_EACH. Example: some_other_template<T1, T2> cause preprocessor to think that there are 2 params some_other_template<T1 and T2>. Putting the parameter into additional braces like ((X4)) results in the template: some_template<X1, X2, X3, (X4)> and that results in a compiler error. I know this construct can switch off ADL, but I don't know why it result here in a compiler error, since I fully qualify the X4 (from which namespace it is). Is there any way to treat Xn as a single paramer but during the final pre-processing stage get rid of additional braces? Many thanks, Ovanes

Hello,I recently inquired about building Boost System which is included with the Boost Asio distribution as a universal binary. I think my question was too comlicated, so let me simplify it. What I _think_ I need to do is add my build environment information into the Boost.System Jamfile. [interprocess] nptl compatibility

Hello Ion, I would like to use the interprocess library and some NPTL features (pthread_setaffinity_np => assign a thread to a cpu) at the same time. The pthread_setaffinity_np function is declared in /usr/include/nptl/pthread.h (on my developer platform), but throughout the interprocess/boost headers I can find #include <pthread.h> ... which makes me think that /usr/include/pthread.h is included. Can I simply swap in the interprocess .hpp files the include statements to this: #include <nptl/pthread.h> ... or do you know of a cleaner solution? I'm asking you this, because I'm using a trimmed down boost library (interprocess + bare minimum from the rest of boost) and only in the interprocess headers do I see pthread.h inclusion. Furthermore, I will have to link against /lib64/tls/libpthread-2.3.4.so... do you foresee a problem with that? Many thanks, Szilard

Hi, I'm beginning to use Boost.Test, I decided to create a test suite (with BOOST_AUTO_TEST_SUITE) for each module to test, and various test cases (with BOOST_AUTO_TEST_CASE) in each suite. I was wondering is it exist any macro to define functions to be executed at: - test suit initialization: execute a function before any test in the test suite - test suit finalization: execute a function after any test in the test suite - test setup: execute a function before each test - test tear down: execute a function after each test Is there an easy way to do what I need? Hello, I am using the current boost (1.35) from the SVN, built with Visual Studio 2008 in 32 bit mode. The debug build of my project works fine, but unfortunately there is a linker error when building my application with the release configuration. 1>LINK : fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'libboost_iostreams-vc90-mt-s-1_35.lib' The boost library path is correct - and there is definitely no 'libboost_iostreams-vc90-mt-s-1_35.lib'. Hello, I'm building boost and would like to generate .pdb files for static library targets. How do I determine which dll or lib outer target is current from within an actions compile block? With that I could generate a pdb file name for /Fd. I'm working with VS2008 and boost 1_34_1 or 1_35 release branch. All help is greatly appreciated. Gary Kratkin

I am trying to install boost 1.34.1 on a cygwin (x86, WinXP, NTFS) system. "make install" gives the following error: /boost_1_34_1/tools/build/v2/tools/stage.jam:424: in object(installed-shared-lib-generator)(a)4.run *** argument error * rule virtual-target.register ( target ) * called with: ( object(file-target)@1395 object(file-target)@1396 ) * extra argument object(file-target)@1396 /boost_1_34_1/tools/build/v2/build/virtual-target.jam:880:see definition of rule 'register' being called I've looked at line 424 of stage.jam. It is in the "else" block of an "if OS==NT" structure. I guess that it is wrongly detecting a linux OS - my OS is Windows. I don't know how to correct the code (I'm not familiar with this language), but by commenting out selected lines, I can force it to enter the NT block, and it all appears to work fine. Building ASIO as a universal binary in Leopard

I'm running OS X Leopard on an intel Macbook. I was able to muddle through getting 1.34.1 built universal. In order to build Boost universal, I followed the instructions I stumbled upon here: http://woldlab.caltech.edu/cgi-bin/mussa/wiki/OSXUniversalDependencies I modified it slightly to build with the OS 10.5 sdk. I have appended my user-config.jam file. I am interested in using ASIO, which depends upon Boost.System. Boost.System is not included in 1.34.1, but it is included in the ASIO download. I can build and have built system according to the instructions in the ASIO README, but these instructions result in an i386 only build. Any ideas how I can build and install Boost.System universal with 1.34.1? Or, is there a better way altogether? Thanks in advance. Hi, I encountered problems while trying to serialize hash_maps which use pool allocators ( gcc: no member 'serialize' ). I had a look into "boost/serialization/hash_map.hpp" and realized a problem in the declaration of hash_map in here: BOOST_STD_EXTENSION_NAMESPACE::hash_map<Key, HashFcn, EqualKey, Allocator> should be BOOST_STD_EXTENSION_NAMESPACE::hash_map<Key, Value, HashFcn, EqualKey, Allocator> It seems that nobody used the hash_map with more than 4 template parameters together with boost::serialization before. It would be nice, if the following changes for "boost/serialization/hash_map.hpp" would be adopted into the repos. Multiple templates singletons

Hi, I have a template class with 6 template arguments as : template <typename contractType, typename treeType, int n, enum1 rtype, enum2 qtype, enum3 vtype> class TreeImpl {}; I need to write partial specializations for the cases n=2, n=3, for 2 cases of rtype, 2 cases of qtype and 3 cases of vtype, therefore I will write 2*2*2*3 = 24 partial specializations. Any fully specialized template instance should be a singleton. I would like to find a way to store any instanciated full specialization in some common list, so that in other parts of the code, i can deal with the various singletons without having to write actual arguments n,rtype,qtype and vtype. I thought of having all these templates inherit from a template base class template <typename contractType, typename treeType> class TreeImplBase; Each specialization of these holds a static std::map< boost::tuple<int,enum1,enum2,enum3>, const TreeImplBase* >; which contains the list of the derived template classes. Any comments are appreciated, Perhaps this is a known design pattern, perhaps there is an easier way of doing this, perhaps there is a boost library which helps with this, regards,

BGL: Problem accessing property_map members

Hi, I am trying to use the BGL to model a simple directed graph with internal edge properties. Problems using Boost.Threads

Hello Boost Users, I am trying to use Boost.Thread in my application. I am compiling on Windows for Windows using Cygwin GCC with the "no-cygwin" option. Boost.Build is far too complicated for my application, so I am using a simple Makefile. I don't mind whether I use Windows threads or POSIX threads, but I have tried both and I can't get either to work. Re: Windows threads, I have static linked to "boost_thread-gcc34-mt-1_34_1" (no plan to use unsupported tss), and I defined BOOST_THREAD_USE_LIB and BOOST_HAS_WINTHREADS, however I get a lot of error messages about pthread functions not found. Have you any idea why I get error messages about using pthread functions when BOOST_HAS_WINTHREADS is defined? Is there some other macro(s) which should be defined? Re: POSIX threads, I have static linked to "boost_thread-gcc34-mt-1_34_1" and "pthreadGC2" (pthreads-win32), and I defined BOOST_THREAD_USE_LIB and BOOST_HAS_PTHREADS, however I get an error message that nanosleep is not found. I read that nanosleep is part of libc, so I added "c" to my list of static libraries, which finds nanosleep, but then I receieve other errors which looks as though I am linked to multiple C runtimes. What is the correct approach to link nanosleep in this configuration? If you have any suggestion, please let me know! Thanks in advance for your time. Kind regards, Anthony P.S. Storing types in a non-template class?

Hi, I have a singleton class called InputRegistry. Before the class is used, the user must call: InputRegistry::Initialize(); I would like this function to take a parameter that defines the type of a critical section object, which is unknown at compile time (template). I need to store this type in my InputRegistry class so that the unknown critical section type can be constructed later. How can I do this without making InputRegistry a template class? If I make InputRegistry a template, that basically means I need to redesign the class, as the singleton pattern would not apply if it were a template class. I'm hoping boost can help here. [Singleton] pre-review question

Hello, I am currently evaluating boost.singleton for our application. I hope it is not too late to write a review. As I understood from the docs, Singleton instance is immediately (when all global and static variables are initilized) created. In our context we need singleton to be created on first request (as it is described in GoF). The problem is following: Our application must parse config file which is accessible after entering main and store the options/parameters parsed in a singleton class. If I initialize singleton immediately (before entering main) I can not parse command line options and have to trick around with some additional functions which do it for me (but a constructor would be a much better choice, when I try for the first time to access the singleton). Is that possible with the current implementation? I know I could overload operator-> and check that options are parsed, but I think this is a not so obvious scenario for everyone. cygwin buit boost libraries do not work

Hi folks, I have buit boost in cygwin followed instruction in the boost getting start documentation. it seemed successful and many libraries ( including dynamic and static ones ) were put into /usr/local/lib. I then try to compile a very simple example code listed as blow, which are a copy on the boost documentaion. #include <boost/regex.hpp> #include <iostream> #include <string> int main() { std::string line; boost::regex pat( "^Subject: (Re: |Aw: )*(.*)" ); while (std::cin) { std::getline(std::cin, line); boost::smatch matches; if (boost::regex_match(line, matches, pat)) std::cout << matches[2] << std::endl; } } What I did is, g++ -I/usr/local/include RegexSample.cpp -o RegexSample -L/usr/local/lib -lboost_regex but the resulting RegexSample.exe can not run properly -- it simply exist with an error code ( 53 ) and do nothing for me. My question is: is there anything different for Boost on Cygwin? The procedure I used to buid Boost on Cygwin is provided as below. Please check it can tell me if there is anything wrong. iostreams and serial ports help

Hi, I'm a newcomer to boost and having trouble determining if what I want to achieve is possible. I want some sort of boost::iostreams object wrapping a serial port so that it conforms to the usual interfaces - this would be extremely useful not only for its use, but also to enable injection of a stringstream instance as a mock object when testing. It seems that the likely candidate for this is file_descriptor but I'm not entirely sure. First off, file_descriptor refines SeekableDevice, which a serial port isn't - does this mean that I can't do it? After trying to compile I realised that a SeekableDevice provides read, write and seek functions, nothing else. Am I seriously misunderstanding the point of boost::iostreams? If I am then can anybody point me in a better direction? My ultimate requirement is a serial port access class that looks just like a C++/boost iostream. I cannot use C++ iostreams directly as I require access to file-descriptor which is not available. Anyone able to help a lost person please? TIA, --rob

iostreams::stream: flush doesn't work but endl does

Hi all, I've created my own iostreams device (for a serial port) which for debugging purposes prints out calls to read()/write(). I'm constructing a stream on the device like this: serial_device serial("/dev/ttyS3", serial_device::Baud38400); stream<serial_device> s(serial); If I do this: s << "hello world" << endl; serial.write() is called and does its debug output, but with this: s << "hello world\r" << flush; I get nothing despite using 'flush'. I've also tried calling s.flush() manually but get the same lack of effect. How come flush isn't working as it should here? TIA, --rob -- Rob Desbois

Hi everybody I need to solve a linear system Ax = b, where A is a tridiagonal matrix, is there an easy way to do it? I programmed an algo, which computes the inverse of the tridiagonal matrix with the usmani-algo and uses prod then, but this is quite time intense. I want to use the lapack bindings, but I dont get along with it. Im bit confused, if I need to install something additional to it, the way I tried out gesv, its not working and I get error msgs. I searched through out the www, but its hard to find good info. If somebody has already the code to solve linear equations with lapack, I would thankful, if he could post it here. Property Tree

Hello I'm using boost property_tree with the variant data type: typedef boost::variant<std::string, std::vector<std::string> > registry_entry; i.e I want to store either strings or vectors of strings at each key node. I'm using the inserters and extractors at the bottom of this email (similar to those included in the custom_data.cpp in the property_tree/examples folder). Does anyone know how I can write the tree out in xml format? The provided write_xml method can only handle property trees of string data type. Is there anyway to either tweak the code (e.g. modify the inserter and extractors) or wrap the variant class such that property_tree::write_xml will correctly render the tree as xml? Regex newbie problem

Newbie to boost. I used the MSVC 8.0 installer, and got the first couple of example programs to work, but failed on the regex example. I'm using MSVC 2008 (aka MSVC-9.0) (Express Edition) IDE, in Debug configuration. The linker can't resolve several symbols with libboost_regex_vc80-mt-gd-1_34_1.lib. Stripped of the qualifiers these are: _Orphan_all(void) const, ~_Container_base(void), _Swap_all(...), and insert(...). I switched to release configuration, now the linker looks in libboost_regex_vc80-mt-1_34_1.lib and can't find insert(...). Any suggestions? Should I wait for a MSVC-9.0 installer, and go back to MSVC 2005 in the meantime? Stephen B.

Hello, I am trying to use use Boost::Regex on HP 11i with gcc 4.2.2 and I notice that in config/platform/hpux.hpp there is a define to turn off wide-char support unless using aCC and have a1 source eg: #if !(defined(__HP_aCC) || !defined(_INCLUDE__STDC_A1_SOURCE)) # define BOOST_NO_SWPRINTF # define BOOST_NO_CWCTYPE #endif This will never allow gcc to use wregex even if wchar support is available. Is this because there are so few people using Zgcc oin HP-ux or am I missing something? Effects: Renames from_p to to_p, as if by POSIX rename(). Postconditions: !exists(from_p) && exists(to_p), and the contents and attributes of the file originally named from_p are otherwise unchanged. [Note: If from_p and to_p resolve to the same file, no action is taken. Otherwise, if to_p resolves to an existing file, it is removed. Hello, I'm just wondering why zlib and bzip2 codec are "dual_use" filter but not gzip? Can anybody enlighten me on this restriction? In fact, I have the following use case: I need to manage an "iostream" instance for interfacing with an external library but I would like to be able to support the GZIP codec during writing/reading operations, that is, I must deal with the following "external" serializer engine: SerializerEngine ar(std::iostream& ios, OpeningMode mode) The SerializerEngine interface provides some read/write raw operations. I'm trying to compile (with VS 2005) a simple example of serialization (boost 1.34) of a polymorphic class, but I get the following compile error: basic_xml_oarchive.hpp(83) : error C2027: use of undefined type 'boost::STATIC_ASSERTION_FAILURE<x>' 1> with 1> [ 1> x=false 1> ] Can you help me? Memory Leak Detection output format

Hi all, I'm using the boost.test unit tests with memory leak detection turned on and I'm slightly puzzled about the format of the output. I've been working on getting boost to play nicely with STLport and one of the 'problems' I'm having is with memory leaks being reported by boost.test which are actually coming from stlport (there is a discussion on their FAQ about how these aren't really memory leaks at all but that is beside the point). I've managed to get rid of most of these leaks but I've still got one hanging around and I don't know where it comes from. My output from my testing looks like this Embedding manifest... Performing Post-Build Event... *** No errors detected Running 1 test case... Detected memory leaks! Dumping objects -> {171} normal block at 0x00378B88, 1280 bytes long. Data: < 7 lationStatis> A8 8D 37 00 6C 61 74 69 6F 6E 53 74 61 74 69 73 Object dump complete. My question is this... how can I enable more informative memory leak output? In this article () it says that by #define _CRTDBG_MAP_ALLOC, the filename and line number will also be displayed. I'm looking into execution_monitor.ipp and I can see where <crtdbg.h> is included but even if I put the #define directly before this include the output comes out exactly the same as above. (and yes I recompiled the library) I'm using MSVC8.0, boost 1.34.1 and stlport 5.1.4 and the test library is compiled as C:\Program Files\boost\boost_1_34_1\libs\test\build>bjam --toolset=msvc link=static stdlib=stlport threading=multi I would really appreciate if anyone could give me some insight on why this is being reported in such a way that I can't actually use it. Using singleton library

Hi, I'd like to give the Singleton library currently out for review a try. I have the standard Boost 1.34.1 release. Blindly copying in the files in the singleton release distribution into the relevant directories in by Boost installation results in compile errors such as: "boost/function_types/is_member_function_pointer.hpp: No such file or directory" And indeed, function_types is not present in my installation. Is there a recipe for getting going with this library on top of the standard distrubtion, or should I just check everything out from HEAD in CVS? Cheers, James.

Dieter, I've actually already found VLD, however I had some small problems with it... firstly it's a compile time library meaning that I'd have to include it into the stlport source and compile it in from the ground up rather than just linking. While this is doable (with a bit of work) my second problem was that it caused random crashes in my application ... this was much harder to work around :) Thanks to all for the suggestions however - has anyone ever had any luck with mpatrol? Compiling on Linux 2.6.9-42.ELsmp #1 SMP x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux I had no issue building the boost libraries using icpc 10.0 (toolset intel-linux). Hi, I was wondering it is currently possible to give ptr_vector a custom deleter? This could simply be in the form of a functor. If this feature does not exist, would it be hard to add? Filesystem bug in directory_iterator (operations.cpp, readdir_r_simulator function)

Hi, I have encountered an error in the filesystem library. I am working with Boost 1.34.1, SunOs 5.7, and a multi-threaded environment. This small program reproduces the problem: ------------------------------------------------------ #include <boost/filesystem/fstream.hpp> #include <boost/filesystem/operations.hpp> #include <boost/filesystem/convenience.hpp> #include <boost/foreach.hpp> #include <iostream> int main() { namespace fs = boost::filesystem; fs::path path(".",fs::native); if(fs::exists(path) && fs::is_directory(path)) { fs::directory_iterator begin(path), end; BOOST_FOREACH(fs::path file, std::make_pair(begin,end)) std::cout << file.leaf() << std::endl; } } ------------------------------------------------------ The problem is that this program never ends. Apparently the "begin" iterator never reaches the "end" iterator. It only happens in a multi-thread compilation. But, I think that I know where the bug is. In the file libs/filesystem/src/operations.cpp is were the function 'readdir_r_simulator' is implemented, and, if I understand it correctly, it should return != 0 if an error has ocurred. But, the 1247 line: { return ::readdir_r( dirp, entry, result ); } is wrong, because when an error is encountered, readdir_r() returns a null pointer. NULL is converted to the int 0 and the function returns it. So, I suggest to change that line with: { if(::readdir_r( dirp, entry, result )==NULL) return errno; else return 0; } I will try to post this bug to the bug tracking facility (¿trac?). [program_options] Non-conventional options

Hi, I've read http://www.boost.org/doc/html/program_options/howto.html#id1592624 about Non-conventional Syntax but it doesn't solve my problem. For a program I have to bypass some options to the underlying library (to be concrete Qt), where some of the Qt specific options I have to parse for my program too. Qt's QApplication recognizes cmd line arguments in a style of '-command' which differs from long option style of boost.program_options. Therefore the '-command' should be valid, the '--command' not! Writing binary data in a specific byte ordering (i.e. network order)

[Please do not mail me a copy of your followup] Does boost have a facility for this? I have a bunch of code that did binary I/O on x86. I want to make the code endian-neutral. This is similar to writing binary data in "network order" as is done with TCP and other internet protocols. I was thinking that you could now determine completely at compile-time whether or not bytes need to be swapped using a template class. My thought was that you would have a class for writing "LittleEndian" bytes that took a boolean template parameter. The parameter is determined at compile-time based on the endian-ness of your architecture. Then a specializations for the template determines whether or not you just use stream.write() to write the binary bytes directly from the POD datum or whether or not you manually extract the individual bytes for writing in the proper order. I hope that's clear... it hasn't gelled in my mind enough to have a sample implementation. Hello, I was looking through the documentation of boost.accumulators for calculating the variance in one pass. It seems that for so called 'immediate variance' some approximation is being introduced. [Boost String Algorithms library] ireplace_all bug with character arrays

Hi, I've encountered a bug with ireplace_all from the Boost String Algorithms library for version 1.35. If I pass a character array for the Format argument, the function ignores the null terminator and instead uses the entire array minus the last character to replace the occurrences of the Search string in the Input parameter. However, if I provide a pointer to a character array, the string replacement is done as expected. When I stepped into the code, I came across the following lines (excerpt from /trunk/boost/range/as_literal.hpp): template< class Char, std::size_t sz > inline iterator_range<const Char*> as_literal( const Char (&arr)[sz] ) { return boost::make_iterator_range( arr, arr + sz - 1 ); } There is no check for a null terminator. Nor did I find one after this function returned. I think the author here assumed that a caller would always pass in a character array of the right size. I've attached a sample that demonstrates the problem. I performed the test in Visual Studio 2008. Let me know if you need more information. Thanks. Rich Turrin

The purpose of the mini-review will be to assure that the suggestions outlined below have been adequately addressed. I would like to again thank Steven for submitting a very useful library, and for diligently working with the reviewers on improving its design. I would also like to thank Tobias Schwinger, Joel de Guzman, Darren Cook, Daniel (dherring@...), Felipe Magno de Almeida, and Paul Bristow for providing reviews, votes and half votes. Finally, thanks also to Dan Marsden, Larry Evans, Alexander Nasonov, Richard (legalize@...) and Mathias Gaunard for contributing to the discussion. RATIONALE FOR ACCEPTANCE: I believe the low number of full, positive reviews is justified by the relatively narrow scope that this library covers. Within that scope, however, reviewers indicated that the library is extremely useful. Also, the reviewers submitting positive votes have indicated (and proven) significant expertise in the area, leading me to place much weight on their votes. On the other hand, the negative votes did not point out any concrete flaws in the library itself that would merit rejection. RATIONALE FOR REQUIRING A MINI-REVIEW The "no" votes did, on the other hand, indicate some skepticism of the quality of the library/documentation as submitted, and the progress of the redesign that was happening during the review. Also, as a result of the review, the potential scope of the library has expanded significantly from what was originally proposed (which mostly focused on the ability to choose the number of cases at run-time). I believe that a combination of these two give sufficient reason for a mini-review - doubts about the library can be resolved, and those that might become prospective users of the library under the expanded scope will get a chance to give their opinion. I volunteered to manage the mini-review, so once the library is ready it will hopefully not remain in the review queue for too long (as it seems that finding review managers is the biggest problem ATM). To keep the burden on the community low, I propose to treat the mini-review as a partial continuation of the current review - I will consider the "yes" votes by Tobias and Joel to be left standing unless they state otherwise, and will require any "no" votes to be (re)justified given the new condition of the library. SUGGESTED CHANGES TO THE LIBRARY: * Documentation All reviewers have noted that the documentation could be improved. Specific suggestions were: * motivating example on the first page * additional examples * performance stats * more explanation of the types involved and how they are used. As the scope for the library has increased as a consequence of the review, a gentler, more detailed documentation approach might benefit the library - I believe that many people might find the new library useful, given the right motivation and examples in the documentation. * Return type Tobias Schwinger suggested that the return type should be specified explicitly in the switch_ call, rather than inferring it from the function object, and this seems to be the status quo in the newer designs. Joel de Guzman also suggested that if a version of switch_ should infer the return type, that return type should be a Boost.Variant of the types returned by each of the cases. * Default default behavior If the default behavior is left unspecified, switch_ should invoke the default constructor of the return type in the default case, rather than throwing an exception. This was suggested by Tobias Schwinger after the issue was raised by Dan Marsden. Alexander Nasonov has also indicated that a throwing default case can cause inefficiency, even when it is guaranteed not to be invoked. * Fall-through Alexander Nasonov pointed out the lack of fall-through capability in the submitted implementation. Fall-through has been incorporated into the recent designs being discussed. * Allowing void-returning function objects for the default case with a non-void returning switch Tobias Schwinger mentioned the possibility of allowing default case function objects of void return type even when the switch return type is non-void, as long as the function object call does not return. This would be useful, for example, if the function object is guaranteed to throw. After some discussion on whether determining if the return type is void can be done efficiently, it looks like the proposed solution is to use a special return type that indicates that the call will not return. Since Tobias indicated that this feature is a minor point, it could be implemented or not, depending on how well it fits into the final design. * Design There has been a lengthy discussion on the underlying design of the library, what it should offer, and whether the name of the library is appropriate. There are two types of designs that have been put forward as being appropriate and/or necessary for a Boost.Switch library. On one hand, there is the submitted design (labeled "A" in recent postings), which takes the switch cases in an MPL sequence and a single function object containing implementations of all cases. Joel de Guzman has proposed another design (labeled "B"), in which the switch cases are specified separately and allow a different function to be used for each case. Design "A" is better suited for situations in which the number of cases is determined by a compile time constant, while "B" is more appropriate for many use cases, and provides more flexibility and a more familiar syntax. The result of the discussion was that the Boost.Switch library should cover both situations, and an interface is now being developed that can be used in different ways for different uses (based on a common concept capturing case sequences). Thanks again to all that have contributed to this review, and congratulations to Steven for the accepted library. Error using native_file_string()

Hi, I am newbie to boost. I was earlier using boost-1.33.1 and my code was working fine. In FC6 i am compiling my code and shows me the following error. * error: âclass boost::filesystem::basic_directory_entry<boost::filesystem::basic_path<std::basic_string<char, std::char_traits<char>, std::allocator<char> >, boost::filesystem::path_traits> >â has no member named ânative_file_stringâ* Is there any difference in the libraries ? Am I missing something? Boost.regex :: u32regex does not compile with latest STLPort

Hi, Not sure if this is an issue on boost side or STLPort side, but compiling u32regex match givess an error in v4/perl_matcher.hpp, line 85. the call is essentially vector<int>::assign(int, int) since char type is int for ICU strings. This is being resolved to template<iter> assign(iter, iter) member, hence the error. I have fixed it in my local copy by changing the line to s1.assign(static_cast<std::size_t>(1), col); But don't know if this is a good fix. This used to work on Dinkum STL, so I am guessing STLPort is messing up somewhere. Do I need to build regex libraries again after this change? Thanks Amit

MinGW Build Issues

Why on earth I try and support Windows is beyond my comprehension. It's just something I do. I'm having some massive difficulties making Boost build with MinGW so I can start using it from Code::Blocks. I've tried using Boost's native Jam system, but first I have to build that. And that doesn't work.
