Jonathan, A couple thoughts: 1. One of the first confusions that I naively had when I first approached the library was that classes that had close() methods did not necessarily model Closable. I am not sure if this means that "Closable" is a bad name and should be changed, but it might be worth calling out this distinction more pointedly in the documentation. 2. Perhaps for filtering streams, it would be best to make sure that closing the stream would close all the filters and flush the device. Would that solve this issue? Or is that already the current behavior? Chad Jonathan Turkanis wrote: The problem is that filtering_stream does not model Closable, so close() is a no-op. This is counterintuitive and probably represent a less than ideal design, but when I wrote the library I couldn't think of a satisfactory way to define close() for a filtering stream. You might think that the way to define close() would simply be to close all the filters and devices in the chain. Unfortunately, this is not correct. The reason is that while filters are designed to be reusable, devices are in general one-use only. For example, when a compression filter is closed, it is expected to be in a state where it can be used to compress a fresh stream of data. But when a file is closed, it is not reset to the state it was in when it was first opened: it has to be manually reopened with a new user-provided pathname. So simply closing all the filters and devices in the chain would leave the chain in an unusable state. The closest I could come to defining a non-trivial close() for filtering_streams was to have close() call pop() -- in effect, closing all the filters and discarding the final device. However, my feeling was that this behavior would be considered counterintuitive. I knew this could cause problems with copy, but I decided to wait for user feedback before making any changes. The issue never came up, and I forgot about it until now. It could be that not many are using the library, as you suggest, or that people discovered that you can solve the problem by calling reset() or pop() -- as you heard on the IRC channel -- and never bothered to bring it up on this list. Gentoo: recent emerge gives me PIC errors

On my last emerge, I believe I got a new set of boost libs (amd64). Now my project is getting a PIC problem. All my code use compiles with -fPIC, so is this no longer the case with boost on Gentoo and is there a way to turn it on? I tried some various USE flags but nothing seems to make a difference. Hi to all, I've just written a summary of the flyweight review that tries to point out the main requests, questions and comments from reviewers and Joaquin's replies to those. If someone thinks I've missed some important point, please let me know. Joaquín is already correcting the pointed issues and thinking about alternatives on the keyed_flyweight issue. I hope we can definitely solve them satisfactorily in a short period of time. Here we go: -------------------------- Beginning of summary -------------------------- ------------------------- *Tim Blechmann’s review:* ------------------------- Design: Good. Suggests using read-write locks to improve concurrency since most operations will be searches. Implementation: fine Documentation: good Usefulness: quite useful to reduce memory footprint. Try to use the library: no Effort: Read documentation and compare it with his own implementation Knowledgeable about the problem domain: yes Accept the library: yes This reviews starts a thread about the correct read-write lock implementation for flyweight: 1) Joaquín points out that the library is based on insert(x) so a good candidate can be: readwrite_lock l(mutex); l.read_lock(); if(h=find(x))return h; else{ l.unlock(); l.write_lock(); h=insert(x); } Unfortunately read-write locks were removed due to a bug so this issue will be put under Future Work section for now. 2) Alberto Ganesh Barbati: suggests using hinted insert to improve performance in cases where find(x) fails and try to get a O(1) insertion. He also suggests using promotion or/and upgradable mutexes. 3) Joaquín thinks promotion/upgradable mutexes are not necessary. Read-write locks/upgradability/hints will need more thinking to maintain current policy orthogonality and the issue needs time. As mentioned, the issue will be revised when rw locks are available in Boost. Review manager note: I think that using “hint” needs atomic convertibility, because the “hint” can be invalidated by an erasure between unlock_sharable() and lock_sharable() and hint insertion does not guard against invalidated hints, but only against non invalidated but non-optimal hints. ------------------------- *John Reid’s review:* ------------------------- Design: Very good. Suggests intermodule_holder as the default holder. Implementation: Ok. Documentation: Clearly written and well thought out. He would like to see more examples and the inclusion of test code. Joaquín’s answer: I'm no expert here, but I'd say that platforms without static var unicity across dynamic modules are the majority rather than the exception. * Reference section: The reference section was much more hard to follow. I think that the interactions between the different classes are very hard to describe using the current style. Joaquín’s answer: It tries to keep the level of formality you find at the C++ standard. The idea is you go to the reference for exact, authoritative information. * An implementation section will help to understand how all this works, describing the interactions between the core and the policies. Issues: * It doesn't fully grasp the essence of the flyweight pattern because of a major flaw. The flaw is the fact that an object needs to be created in order to check whether an equivalent flyweight exists or not. Implementation: Well done. Issues: * I strongly disagree with the choice of the term "factory" for a component that actually only acts as a storage. Documentation: Very well written. Issues: * The policies are indeed properly described, but the bare description is not very helpful in showing how to write a new policy Usefulness: Useful if the flaw I described before could be addressed Used the library: gcc 3.4.5 (mingw) Effort: A couple of hours. He encourages the maintainer to consider addressing the issues I raised here, in which case I am ready to change my opinion. 1) Joaquín’s answer: * Instantiating a flyweight<T> will always create a temporary T (and hopefully just one when we get rvalue refs and variadic templates). The purpose of the library is *not* to avoid constructing expensive objects, it is to reduce memory consumption through object sharing. Collateral benefits include increased performance in object passing around. * GoF introduces a key type K into the pattern that is used to retrieve the actual values of T. So, we have a one-to-one relation KT, i.e. there exists a stateless function f of the form “T f(const K&)”. The two types can be coincident (non-keyed proposal) * the constructor of flyweight semantically takes keys, not values * keys (not values) are fed as-is to the factory insert() method: it's up to the factory to determine whether the key is already present and if it's not present to construct the corresponding value. * the insert() method returns a handle * the factory provides a way to extract values from handles * The rest of the design would more or less stays exactly the same. 5) Joaquín’s answer to Alberto’s unified flyweight: I'd rather factories remained dumber so that all this intelligence is implemented in the core because: * STL associative containers are either set-like * (key_type=value_type) or map-like (T != value_type != key_type, because T == mapped_type). * The container would have to deal with a more general notion of key extraction. Boost.MultiIndex can do that, but I don't want to tie flyweight to that lib. Regex Library+ Urgent

HI, I have built regex library with stlport using the following command nmake -fvc8-stlport.mak ( I copied vc71-stlport.mak to vc8-stlport and updated vc71 to vc80). It created *boost_regex-vc80-mt-gdp-1_34_1.lib *and dll files. I have defined the two variables in my application in the same order. #define #define __STL_DEBUG #define BOOST_REGEX_DYN_LINK Iam getting the following errors. can any 1 help me ? I am not able to proceed further with my application. I am stuck for last four days. I have seen some posts on this but not able to find the solution. I have defined the boost regex lib path properly. getline from boost::iostream::filtering_streambuf

I want to read line by line from a gzipped document. I first do: std::ifstream file(fileName.c_str()); boost::iostreams::filtering_streambuf<boost::iostreams::input> in; in.push(boost::iostreams::gzip_decompressor()); in.push(documentFile); However, then the obvious: string line; while(std::getline(in, line)) { ... } does not compile. Is there really no getline for filtering_streambuf? If not, what is the best way to write one? I tried reading character by character using boost::iostream::get(in) but that looks terribly inefficient to me, and is not nice code. Thanks for your help, Holger

Although LP has been well explored in Computer science, it remains under utilized in main stream software development due to lack of support in popular programming languages. Among the few languages that do support it, Prolog is perhaps the most commonly known. Instead of attempting to embed a Logic interpreter or other heavy weight engine into C++, Castor integrates LP using a few simple library primitives. This unique approach allows a natural and deep integration of declarative code into the language, and also provides the flexibility of combining Logic with other paradigms natively supported by C++ such as OOP, generics etc. STL concepts like iterators ,containers and streams can also be used in declarative code. Hi, everyone 'adj_list_ra_edgelist.cpp' is a simple example of bgl, but I can not compile it with gcc 3.4.4 on cygwin/windows xp. Hi, I've a question about Boost Library Graphs. However, when I try to access this property via a property map boost::property_map< Boost_Graph, boost::vertex_index_t >::type vertexNameMap = get( boost::vertex_index, g ); with vertexNameMap[v] (where v is Vertex_Type) the compiler tells me that the property is not of type 'ClassA*' (as I would expect) but of type 'size_t'. Why? I thought that for the definition of boost::property< boost::vertex_index_t, ClassA* > ClassA* is the template value and defines the type of the property "vertex_index". boost.xpressive - unicode supported?

Hi, I am wondering whether Xpressive supports Unicode completely, as Regex does through ICU? I found out about Xpressive only recently, and it being header only is obviously a big plus; but my app is all about i18n, and makes use of regex patterns with character category predicates (e.g. [[:P*:]]). I read the docs for Xpressive - while it does claim to support Unicode, they have not provided a list of valid patterns, and unless they have code charts as part of headers, I don't see how they can provide full Unicode support with depending on ICU or something... Any clarification would be extremely helpful. Thanks Amit

Hi, I'try to build a regex for an ibis file, the line I'm interested looks like: [IBIS Ver] 3.2 | Used for template variations" where '|' is an optional comment identifier with the (therefore optional) comments follows. I'm interested in the version self: "3.2" to create a parser using a factory. Using egrep '^\[IBIS Ver]' success. From docs I tested the dynamic regex $ perl -p -e '(\\w+) (\\w+)!' [lambda] Compilation problem because of EXCEPTION

Hi! I haven't used boost much yet, but have been looking into lambda expressions. I am working within a huge system, where one of the include files has a macro definition for EXCEPTION. Which is also used as an enum value in boost/lambda/detail/arity_code.hpp (within namespace boost::lambda): enum { NONE = 0x00, // Notice we are using bits as flags here. FIRST = 0x01, SECOND = 0x02, THIRD = 0x04, EXCEPTION = 0x08, RETHROW = 0x10}; Using common names such as this in a general library seems a bit risky to me. Any header before "boost/lambda.hpp" which defines macros for any of these enum values, will cause trouble. I don't have insight enough in boost to suggest the correct solution (or to conclude that I have to fix the problem in my own code and let boost::lambda remain unchanged :-). For me right now the fix was simply replacing the (4) occurences of this EXCEPTION with LAMBDAEXCEPTION in the boost files. Where do I go to put this up as a fix-suggestion? Greetings, So, I appear to have hit a stumbling block with GCC 3.2 and Boost.Interprocess (the latest from the release branch which I _believe_ to be the latest 1.35). Specifically, when I try to build the following code, I get numerous compilation errors (they appear to be template related). ---------------------- #include <boost/interprocess/managed_shared_memory.hpp> int main() { return 0; } ------------------------- Is there any way to get this work under my older GCC version or am I out of luck? Hello everyone! I'm asking myself, why edge-descriptors become invalid if I remove the edge and reinsert it? In my case the graph is represented by an adjacency list with vecS storage for vertices and edges. If I'm not mistaken, then the edge_descriptor's are just represented by pairs of vertex indices, right? So why are edge_descriptors invalid if I delete these edges, reinsert the edges and then want to use the old edge_descriptors to address those recreated edges? Most interestingly, a very cumbersome edge(source(old_descriptor, graph), target(old_descriptor, graph), graph).first gives me perfectly valid edge_descriptors again after removal and insertion. Hello bjam developers! I currently read through the docs for bjam and try to build my first project using. We currently need an automated build system in the current project to run directly from the version control system. The doc which I read currently leaves many items open which I do not understand, despite the fact I see bjam as a very cool thing! far superior as make;) These questions are open: 1. From the userman.pdf I learned that there is a possibility to use modules. Is there any location where I can what the modules do or how they work. Since such examples are not very well to understand: userman.pdf page 47-48 ------- "Accessing environment variables Many users would like to use environment variables in Jamfiles, for example, to control location of external libraries. In many cases you better declare those external libraries in the site-config.jam file, as documented in the recipes section. However, if the users already have the environment variables set up, it's not convenient to ask them to set up site-config.jam files as well, and using environment variables might be reasonable. In Boost.Build V2, each Jamfile is a separate namespace, and the variables defined in environment is imported into the global namespace. Therefore, to access environment variable from Jamfile, you'd need the following code: import modules ; local SOME_LIBRARY_PATH = [ modules.peek : SOME_LIBRARY_PATH ] ; exe a : a.cpp : <include>$(SOME_LIBRARY_PATH) ;" ------- 2. As I understood I can use user-config.jam to make default configurations for my project. Hello, The current "incremental search" code needs to resume search where the a possible match starts, and for certain expressions the worst-case time (i.e. input bytes come in one at a time) complexity becomes O(n^2) where n is the number of characters that match the expression: Regex: omg.*wtf Pass 1 input: o Pass 1 input to matching: o Pass 1 verdict: Partial, resume at offset 0. Pass 2 input: m Pass 2 input to matching: om Pass 2 verdict: Partial, resume at offset 0. Pass 3 input: g Pass 3 input to matching: omg Pass 3 verdict: Partial, resume at offset 0. ... Pass n-1 input: t Pass n-1 input to matching: omg...wt (length n-1) Pass n-1 verdict: Partial, resume at offset 0. Pass n input: f Pass n input to matching: omg...wtf (length n) Pass n verdict: Match found and starts at offset 0. Total number of byte matches = n*(n+1)/2, i.e. O(n^2) I am looking for a way to feed the input bytes only once, in order to reduce the time complexity to approximately O(n). A boost newbie asks, how can I initialize a bounded_matrix? I tried various things like this: bounded_matrix<double, 2, 2> rot = list_of( 1.) (2.) (3.) (4.); and got the error message 'no overloaded function takes 2 arguments'. So far, I'm reduced to using copy assignment from a c array, but there's got to be a better way. What am I missing? Static build on darwin

Hi all, I'm having trouble with using Boost.Thread (1.34.1) on Mac OS X (10.4.11/ppc/Xcode 2.3). I have an Xcode project ("BSD command line tool") that links to what I believe is the static build of Boost.Thread (libboost_thread-mt- d-1_34_1.a). However, when Xcode goes to run the executable, it gives the error: > Running… > dyld: Library not loaded: bin.v2/libs/thread/build/darwin/debug/ > threading-multi/libboost_thread-mt-d-1_34_1.dylib > Referenced from: /path/to/my/executable/executablename > Reason: image not found > Program received signal: "SIGTRAP". If I run the executable inside an X11 shell, I get a similar error. If I add the path to the .dylib to the $DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable, I can run the executable. Which makes me wonder if somehow this .a file is really a .dylib. What's also strange is that although the build directories for all the other libraries have the same structure (e.g. filesystem/build/ darwin/debug/link-static/libboost_filesystem-d-1_34_1.a), the thread directory has a threading-multi directory under the link-static directory (meaning the file I am trying to link to is in thread/build/ darwin/debug/link-static/threading-multi/libboost_thread-mt-d-1_34_1.a). I'm building all the libraries with bjam 3.1.15 and the command line "bjam --toolset=darwin". FWIW, I'm also using the Boost filesystem library with this executable, without any compile, link or run-time errors. Any help/ideas? Also: is there any plan to distribute the Boost libraries for Mac OS X in a similar way to how they are distributed for Windows (i.e. installer that has pre-built library binaries)? [serialization] exceptions are not caught

Hello, This is a platform specific problem, platform is RHEL4. We use boost::serialization code, and linked with their static library. And the problem we are facing that all of our exception handler codes are not working any more i.e. catch handler is not called if an exception is thrown. We are not even calling the boost::serializer code. If we remove serializer code everything works fine. Serializer code works pretty fine in suse platform. Now my question is how come exception handler codes are not executing just because we are linking with serializer library. Any insight will be helpful. Thanks, Krishanu

[filesystem] bug in wpath with utf8 locales

Hi, there is a problem with wpath when the system locale is UTF-8. My setup is g++ 4.2.3 --enable-clocale=gnu on a 2.6.18-5-686 GNU/Linux, boost 1.34.1, locale "cs_CZ.UTF-8". The problem seems to be in translating wstring into native strings inside Filesystem. The error I'm getting (and others too, see for example "Problem with exists() and wpath" and "Bug in filesystem library?" on this list) is boost::filesystem::wpath::to_external conversion error I've seen some discussions on the boost-dev list dealing with this issue, and to me this looks like a serious bug in wpath implementation. Until this is resolved, I think that we need to #ifdef this and use char-based paths on Linux. Are there some plans to fix this? I'm willing to help if that is needed. Thanks, Filip

Once its in the thread it seems to revert to class A's methods. Now, i know if i overload the threadcontroller class in B it'd solve all my problems, but the real threadcontroller method is alot more complex and class A has about 6 sub classes so replicating the threadcontroller in each of the classes would be a little tedious. Have i stumbled across a bug, or is that how its supposed to work? Thanks in advance

[python] Integration without a DLL

Hi, I have a game that currently integrates the python interpreter using the Python C API. I would like to expose various C++ interfaces & functions to python, but I want to do so without having to create a separate DLL, as state needs to be modified in the actual core engine of the game as the user calls C++ functions from Python. For example, say I have a C++ function called CompleteQuest(). In Python, we would script a quest for my game and at some point call CompleteQuest() from python. This should map directly to a function in the executable (game). Is there a way to do this? Thanks.

[DateTime] posix_time_zone constructor crashes with bad format string

Hello, I'm using Boost 1.34.1 with Visual Studio 2005 SP1. I've found that if the posix_time_zone constructor is invoked with certain types of invalid time zone string, the application crashes with an attempt to dereference an invalid iterator. Examples of strings that do this are strings with no digits, e.g. "UTC" and strings with a daylight saving time named but no changeover rules, such as "GMT0BST". This is a problem for us as in our application the time zone string is input by the user, and we need to fail gracefully if the user naively supplies an invalid string such as the two above. I think this is easily fixed by testing the iterators against end(), although I'm not quite sure which exception to throw in this case. Any ideas? TIA, Richard.

Hi, I started using the program_options library and I have a question about using the exceptions thrown by the library. I'd like to localize the errors reported by the library, but I can't see why the members of the exception classes are private, or why are there no getters to retrieve the properties needed to re-construct the messages in another language. I looked in the code and it looks that I could use ... Hi, I am new to C++ development and using boost regex library. I have downloaded 1_34_1 version. I have built regex library and it created boost_regex-vc80-mt-*1_34*.lib & dll files for me. But when I included headers and compiled my application but its giving me the following linker error. - *Error 1 fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'boost_regex-vc80-mt-gd-1_34_1.lib' ExpEval * * *so I defined *BOOST_REGEX_NO_LIB *and ran the application this time I got the following error - *This application has failed to start because MSVCP80.dll was not found. date_time with pre and post 2007 US time zones

Greetings! I would like to use boost::date_time to convert between U.S. time zones and GMT, with dates spanning the year-2007 change of rules. There is a "custom time zone", but that takes a Posix string which, if I understand correctly, can't handle both pre- and post-2007 simultaneously. I did see a dst_calc_engine, but there doesn't seem to be a way to connect that to a dst_day_calc_rule, at least not a method standardized in the library. Am I missing something? I guess I could just derive from dst_day_class_rule and override the start_rule_as_string() and stop_rule_as_string() to be something "random"? Thank you in advance. The Boost libraries really are wonderful. (Although I guess us users tend to only write when we hit a wall :-)). Thanks! -Mike

Boost.Serialization [For MPI] Crashes

Hi all, I have been using the serialization library since it is the way to go for communicating whole classes in Boost.MPI. Previously, I didn't have any problems. However, I now experience a strange problem. I have successfully ran all my code in SDSC's Teragrid cluster (A cluster of Itanium processors, running intel-linux), but when I tried to do the same thing in NCSA's cluster (which is similarly composed of Itaniums with same OS) I just can't build serialization library successfully. It says: intel-linux.link.dll bin.v2/libs/serialization/build/intel-linux/release/libboost_serialization-il-1_35.so.1.35.0 OBJREAD Error: Could not create mapping for "bin.v2/libs/serialization/build/intel-linux/release/basic_oarchive.o". icpc: error: problem during multi-file optimization compilation (code 1) Both clusters use the same kernel (2.4.21), same compiler suite (icc 9.1), same architecture, same mpixx (/usr/local/apps/mpich-gm-1.2.6..14b-intel-r2/bin/mpicxx). So, that was a little frustrating. But the fact is that, it creates the multithreaded library (libboost_serialization-il-mt-1_35) even after the error. I gave it a try. Compilation is flawless, but during runtime, main() is even not called [it seg faults immediately].When I debug it, I get the following backtrace: This GDB was configured as "ia64-suse-linux"... Unresolved symbol in boost::filesystem lib with MS VC++ 2005 Pro

Hi all, I’m using boost version 1.34.1 (downloaded from http://www.boost-consulting.com/) with Visual C++ 2005 Professional. Everything worked fine (even boost::filesystem) until I started using boost::filesystem::directory_iterator. I’m trying to compile the example below and get a unresolved symbol: "unsigned int boost::filesystem::detail::not_found_error". *) Of course, I’m linking against the boost filesystem library (if I don’t I get even more unresolved symbols). *) I do define BOOST_ALL_NO_LIB but if I don’t I still get the unresolved symbol. *) Under Linux the same example compiles, links and runs fine! *) I checked and the symbol exists in the library. *) I’m using the correct runtime *) If I comment out the boost::filesystem::directory_iterator line (so only boost::filesystem::exists()) then the example compiles, links, and runs fine! Can anybody point me in the right direction? Is this a problem with my Visual Studio setup? Or is this a problem in the boost consulting stuff? I need to compile Boost for an embedded target running GNU/Linux on an ARM CPU. The toolchain for this is proprietary, compiler executable names are like "arm-none-linux-gnueabi-g++". I'm having trouble compiling with this toolchain though - I can't figure out (even with the documentation) what I'm doing wrong, but AFAICT Boost.Build keeps using my default gcc toolchain. Hello, I'm quite puzzled howto bind arguments to the put-function from the property maps-library. I tried a lot, but I do not know what is wrong with: boost::function< void () > ua = lambda::bind(&boost::put<Property, Value>, p, k, val); Here Property ist the type of the PropertyMap, Value the type of the value. p is the PropertyMap, k the key into it, and val the value I want to save there. However, this gives me (boost 1.34.1, g++ 4.1.2) an "unresolved overloaded function type" error, but whats wrong here? Any help would be great. Thanks in advance. Sebastian

I'm looking for some help with the following code where I try to implement an aggregate filter and a sink. This super simple example is supposed to print the xorred input but instead it prints: The result is: do_filter write: 01+x1+x,*!x76= Does anyone understand why the filtering and sink.write are not done as part of the copy operation? Hi, Currently I have the following: typedef boost::function<void (int)> MyFunction; Is there a typedef in the boost::function class for the Signature template parameter? I need access to the function type passed into the boost::function object. I've tried finding the boost::function class in the source, but that turned out to be impossible. The documentation also does not explain how to do this from what I saw. Any help is appreciated.

Saving to older version

Hi I am testing boost serialization to integrate it in our software. Actually I am using mfc I want to save an object to an older version? I using the split method (save and load) and I don't find how to pass the version to the save function? Hi, I'm using Visual Studio 9 on Windows. Up until I the inclusion of <boost/signals.hpp>, my application linked fine. Hi everyone! I think I've hit a but in the remove_edge(u,v,bg) function in case I want to delete a self-edge. Thread creation overhead & efficiency

I am a new user of boost::thread. After implementing it I found that it slowed down execution of my code. I suspect that it may be due to the overhead of thread creation. I am creating/destroying thread_group ojects many times (tens of thousands) during code execution. Pardon my naïve question, but is this a problem for performance? I noticed some reference to a thread pool on this list. Is a thread pool the best alternative in this situation? Thanks for any guidance, James

[xpressive] regex_search() question

Hi, Currently I have the following string: "test anothertest somethinelse skillholder" I'm trying to create a regex that will match each word. For example, the following regex: (\w+) will match each word. However, boost::xpressive::regex_search() stops at the first substring match. I'm looking for a way to make it continue to find matches until the end of the string is met. So when I review the matches at the end of the search, it will have 4 matches, each match representing one word in the string above. The C++ code is below. Note that I only get "test" in my results back, when I expected 3 other words to be in the matches. Can anyone tell me how to make it continue the search beyond the first match? Hi We can use the SetTimer/KillTimer APIs in windows to register a CALLBACK function to handle WM_TIMER messages at (approx) regular intervals of time (or handle WM_TIMER messages in WindowProc). If you are still having problems after that, I'd be happy to investigate further with you - I am pretty familiar with the close() implementation at this point. We are using iostreams quite extensively - the close issue mentioned above was the only problem that didn't turn out to be user error on our part. boost lambda weirdness (possible bug?)

Hello, I'm trying to use boost lambda to create a function<void (const T&)> and I can't seem to get it to work. Here's the setup: class T { public: char m_c; T( char c ) : m_c( c ) { } virtual T * clone() const=0; virtual ~T(){} }; typedef boost::shared_ptr<T> TPtr; typedef std::vector<TPtr> TVec; using namespace boost::lambda; This works: const boost::function< void( T const * const) > f = bind( &TVec::push_back, &tVec, bind( constructor<TPtr>(), bind( &T::clone, _1))); But this doesn't: const boost::function< void( const T & ) > g = bind( &TVec::push_back, &tVec, bind( constructor<TPtr>(), bind( &T::clone, boost::cref(_1) ))); The compilation error I'm getting is that it cannot create a new object of type T and that is expected since T is abstract. Why would lambda be making copies instead of passing on the reference? I've attached a simplified version of the problem. Hi there, I just have a general question about the building boost documentation. Right now when building the trunk by just using the toolset option only dynamically linked libs using the release version code are being built. To specify static linked one need to add link=static to the command line. Can someone tell where to find such information in the documentation? I have a class needs to be serialized into an XML file. I can save the object into an XML file, but i can not load it back. I found the problem is the dynamic array, "double *pMixtureWeight". building boost libraries with VS2008 (VC9)

I have both VS2005 (VC8) and VS2008 (VC9) on the same machine. I have already downloaded 'boost_1_34_1.zip' and installed a complete boost distribution. On the command prompt, I go to $BOOST_ROOT and type just "bjam", with no arguments. I get the complete VC8 build in a clean way. I follow the same procedure to build using VS2008 (vc9). I go to the $BOOST_ROOT and type "bjam --toolset=msvc-9.0 stage". I get bunch of errors, resulting in failure. Could someone help me in building clean boost libraries, using VS2008 (VC9)?

[Boost Interprocess] - Windows 64-bit / 32-bit mixed process support

Ion, I have a server process and multiple client processes which successfully share a managed_shared_memory vector as well as two message_queues. All processes are 32-bit, and run under both Windows XP and 64-bit XP Server (using 32-bit Wow emulation). However I am trying to take advantage of the Windows XP 64-bit OS, so I have attempted to build the Server process as 64-bit, while leaving the client processes at 32-bit (unfortunately I'm stuck with some 32-bit libraries and cannot move the client processes to x64 at this time). Both the server and clients (64 bit and 32 bit respectively) can see the shared memory file that Interprocess creates, and my class members use fixed-sized datatypes (__int32, __int64), but after walking some of the code it became apparent that Interprocess is having issues with mixing the different processes. Example: message_queue::do_receive(block_t block, void *buffer, std::size_t buffer_size, std::size_t &recvd_size, unsigned int &priority, const boost::posix_time::ptime &abs_time) ... ... //Thre is at least message ready to pick, get the top one detail::msg_hdr_t *top_msg = p_hdr->top_msg(); //Paranoia check if (top_msg == 0) { throw interprocess_exception(); } //Get data from the message recvd_size = top_msg->len; priority = top_msg->priority; ... ... The contents of top_msg appear to be "shifted", such that "top_msg->len;" now returns a 0. Obviously much of this is due to std::size_t being sized differently on the server process (at 64-bit) vs. the client (32-bit) processes. II thought of doing a bit of experimentation, whereby I could replace all instances of std::size_t in the library with something windows specific - like "unsigned __int64", but I have no idea if variations in data type size are the only issue. Should I give it a try or perhaps a different approach would be better? Is there a way to detect a unsigned integer? I would like to have a template to replace a macro that checks a value is in a range. Boost.Utility/Singleton Problem when using with dynamic libraries

Hello, I want to use the Boost.Utility/Singleton together with dll's. I use the Visual Studio 2005 and Windows XP. I have three dynamic libraries. In library A the Singleton is implemented and library B and C access to the Singleton. The dynamic libraries B and C are compiled with the clr compiler Option. The Problem is, that the Singleton will be twice instantiated when library A and B access to the singleton. Question about Boost Interfaces

Hi, Does anyone know the status of the Boost.Interfaces Library proposed by Chris Diggins in 2004? I have found a few references to it on the internet, including one on the Boost Wiki, but it seems to not have ever made it into the official Boost library. I am interest in exploring how Aspect-Oriented Programming techniques might be incorporate into an existing code-base, and would prefer to use a library based solution, rather than a special preprocessor (eg. apsectc++). Since Boost has come to the rescue in the past (with elegant solutions), in this respect, I thought I would start here. If boost.interfaces is dead, does anyone have any suggestions for C++ library-based AOP solutions that have worked for them. Thanks in advance. Martin

boost python: linking with pythonxx_d.lib

Hi, I tried to compile boost python so that it links against the debug version. I therefore run bjam toolset=msvc-9.0 threading=multi python-debugging=on link=shared variant=debug libs\python\build Running it with -n shows, that it sets -DBOOST_DEBUG_PYTHON, but it still links with python25.lib. It only picks "right" python25_d.lib, if I add something to my user-config.jam, like the following: using python : 2.5 : C:\\src\\Python-2.5\\PCBuild\\python ; using python : 2.5 : C:\\src\\Python-2.5\\PCBuild\\python_d : # includes : # libs : <python-debugging>on ; What is the difference between the two methods (as a bjam argument and in the user-config.jam), and is there a way to combine both on the command line? Relationship of Lambda and Phoenix

At BoostCon 2007, I was told that the functionality of Boost.Lambda was essentially present via Phoenix in Boost.Spirit. From what I can tell, both Lambda and Spirit/Phoenix will be present in 1.35, leading me to wonder what advice to give people who are interested in experimenting with the use of lambda functions in Boost. Are people to be encouraged to use Phoenix over Lambda, or are there features in Lambda that Phoenix doesn't have? I'll be giving an overview of some Boost libraries at the Software Development conference in March, and I'll be showing some examples of Lambda. If I should be telling people to use Phoenix for future work, I'd like to know that. Thanks, Scott

Compilation error for Boost.Function 1.34.x fix with TR1 headers.

Hi all, I recently applied the Boost.Function critical bug fix (Dec 17) to my boost 1.34.1 library and I came up against a compilation error. However, I found that if I removed the boost/tr1/tr1 include path when building then the fixed library would compile correctly. Has anyone got the fix to work with the TR1 include paths? I haven't see any other reports of problems with it. I'm using gcc 3.3.5. The first compile error is a suspicious BOOST_FUNCTION_NUM_ARGS redefinition by the TR1 headers. releasing code under the BSL

Hello all, Hoping some one might offer some guidance... (somewhat off-topic, appologies). I've developed a generic DAG library in-house and seeking to place it under the BSL, and would even go as far as a Boost review if people here want such a thing (that's the intention after all). Now, I have obtained authorization from my organization's management and their legal representatives for the software release (yippee!). However, an email trail of approvals, while legal tells me is satisfactory, I would much rather a written approval on company a letter-head. IP Counsel of the organization I work for just said I ought to draft the letter myself and just have the Lab Director sign it (, consistent with the approval already granted .. ie. "Ok to release the work under the BSL"). My question is, what exactly ought to be the wording of such a letter? All help appreciated, and again apologies if it is too far removed from Boost.users NG business. If I ought to take this question elsewhere, please do let me know.
