[boost::ublas] low level of performance with xlC

I'd like to get your point of view on the following topic: runtime performance of binaries built against the IBM VisualAge c++ compilers. I've been recently investigating (with a colleague) various performance matters on a subset of platforms: Power 4 and Power 5 architecture running on different flavors of the AIX operating system, using binaries built with VisualAge C/C++ . We built and ran the boost::uBlas regression tests using either the VisualAge C/C++ v.9 or the GCC 4.0 compilers. Using similar levels of optimization, we observed that the GCC binaries were running much faster. The same tests were performed on a Linux 64-bits machine using a standard Core2 processor and GCC-4.2 and performance was again much much higher. Are we missing something here, something that could allow us to get a decent level of performance with the IBM compilers ? Thank you all for the replys to my enquiry. I solved my problem by installing the Service Pack 1 of VC-8.0. This update introduces a new set of runtimes (rev 762) that the loader is able to match with the Boost dlls. Error locating MSVCP80D.DLL MSVCR80D.DLL from Boost libraries boost-*-vc80-mt-gd-1_34_1.dll

My boost dependent applications fail to start in debug mode: error 14001. The dependency walker cannot locate the VC-8.0 runtime dlls referenced by the boost-*-vc80-mt-gd-1_34_1.dll libraries I build on my machine. That is the multi-threaded debug dll runtime: MSVCP80D.DLL, MSVCR80D.DLL. The binary distribution I got from boost.com has the same problem. This is related to the side-by-side configuration rather than making sure that the runtime dlls are in my path. A default win32 console project from VC-8.0 links fine in multi-threaded debug dll runtime mode. Also, a dll compiled in the VC-8.0 IDE referencing boost will resolve the runtime correctly but the associated boost dlls won't. Thus the dependency walker will also report unresolved runtime dlls/ I have re-installed VC-8.0 but without success. I also have VC-7.1 on my machine. Help is greatly appreciated. Ugly warnings from BOOST_STATIC_ASSERT

We have this really neat and simple macro in our project: #define compile_assert(x) typedef bool COMPILE_ASSERT[(x) ? 1 : -1] Although it does what we need and serves us well, I tried to replace it with BOOST_STATIC_ASSERT. Unfortunately this resulted in a lot of ugly warnings throughout the compile: warning: use of old-style cast Is there any chance to get this fixed?

Hello, I am using boost 1.34.1 and Visual C++ 2008. I use, among other boost facilities, the threaded singleton pattern included in #include <boost/thread/detail/singleton.hpp> This singleton just work fine when compiled withouth the /clr (common langage runtime) option. But, when the \clr option is active, I get 6 link error (LNK2019) : see bottom of message. At present time, the only workaround I have found is to comment the #include <boost/thread/detail/config.hpp> contained in <boost/thread/detail/singleton.hpp>. Did I misused something ? We will also have a new 'Library in a Week' workshop to extend Boost.Algorithm. Threads Don't Take Turns Under Linux (Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon)

I apologize if this gets posted more than once. I found the group on GMane, tried to post, joined the email list, then tried to post several times but still have yet to see it show up. I'm learning C++ and found a tutorial on threads with Boost on Dr. Dobb's site. I've copied the code from this url: http://www.ddj.com/cpp/184401518?pgno=5 It's supposed to fill a buffer with data on one thread and remove data on the other thread. I would expect it to add data and remove at almost the same time but when I run it, it adds 10 items, then removes them, then adds ten again, and so on. It's never adding and removing in an "interleaved" fashion. I've also tried the same with simple counters where both threads count to ten, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. It seems no matter how I set it up, one thread either completes, or runs until it has to stop for a mutex, then the other thread runs. It seems that there is never a case of both threads running at the same time. I've never had trouble doing this in Perl with fork() so I'm not at all sure what could be going wrong. As I said, it's not just the program below, it seems to be any program that uses more than one thread. Am I doing something wrong or is there a setting I need to change? Given a type "T1", is it possible to decide if the class "derived" is derived from a base "base<T1,X>" and deduce the unknown type "X"? I tried to compile boost and used F77=gfortran-4.3 CC="ccache gcc-4.3" CXX="ccache g++-4.3" CFLAGS="-O3 -mfpmath=sse -mtune=athlon64 -msse2 -mmmx -m3dnow -fexpensive-optimizations -fgcse -ffast-math -m64" CXXFLAGS="-O3 -mfpmath=sse -mtune=athlon64 -msse2 -mmmx -m3dnow -fexpensive-optimizations -fgcse -ffast-math -m64" ./configure --prefix=/usr --libdir=/usr/lib64 --with-libraries=all --exec-prefix=/usr/bin to configure it and because I got messages like gcc.compile.c++ bin.v2/libs/thread/build/gcc-4.1.2/debug/threading-multi/condition.o during make, I did a make distclean, another configure as above and typed: make F77=gfortran-4.3 CC="ccache gcc-4.3" CXX="ccache g++-4.3" CFLAGS="-O3 -mfpmath=sse -mtune=athlon64 -msse2 -mmmx -m3dnow -fexpensive-optimizations -fgcse -ffast-math -m64" CXXFLAGS="-O3 -mfpmath=sse -mtune=athlon64 -msse2 -mmmx -m3dnow -fexpensive-optimizations -fgcse -ffast-math -m64" and got the same log telling me there is something compiled for the prepredecessor of the actual compiler. Do I have to edit all the Makefiles by hand? If yes, what is the ./configure script for? Or do I have to use the old old gcc-4.1 ("old" would have been gcc-4.2) ? [multi_index] GCC optimization warns about uninitialized variables

I get error-free and warning-free compiles as long as optimization is turned off (-O0). I get the warning below at all levels of optimization (1 through 3). Hello! being a beginner in C++ and boost I set up the stuff for use with VC++ 2005 Express just today. After some problems I finally managed to get it link, but it's still not fully the way I want. There are three libs: boost...dll, libboost...lib and libboost...s...lib. My questions: -What's the difference between the second and the third one? -Why does building with the IDE link against the second and building on the console (/ link /LIBPATH:...) link against the third type? I looked into auto_link.hpp and the IDE seems to set _DLL but boost doesn't define BOOST_DYN_LINK. But I can't find out why. This leads to question 3: -How to link so the dll will be used? That questions might be a good deal compiler specific but since auto_link.hpp is involved I hope here's still the right place to ask. Thank you in advance! AJ Martin

I thought I would find a zip archive at http://www.boost-consulting.com/vault/ at least so I don't need to pick files one by one from the CVS. Hi, everybody I have a problem to understand mutex behaviour in a server client program . basically there are two threads that execute different code in two different classes but manipulate the same resource: fisrt Class is Subscriber with these members : public: ACE_Unbounded_Set<client_reference> m_set; typedef boost::recursive_mutex Mutex; typedef boost::recursive_mutex::scoped_lock Lock; Mutex mutex_set; and methods: Subscribe (client_reference) : inserts (add) a reference client to the set { ... Lock theScope( mutex_set); m_set.insert (client_reference) ... } Unsubscribe(client_reference) : removes a reference client from the set { ... Lock theScope( mutex_set); m_set.remove (client_reference) } the second class is Manager that has a shared pointer to Subscriber (SubscriberPtr) and does a specific opeartion on each client_reference inside a for loop in the method Manage() { boost::recursive_mutex::scoped_lock scoped_lock(subscriberPtr->mutex_set) for (Subscriber::Set_Iterator iter (subscriberPtr->m_set); iter.next (...) != 0 ; iter.advance ()) { specific opeartion on each client reference } } What happens is that a client can be removed (call to Unsubscribe()) by the first thread during the second one is executing manage() : the set is not well protected and this causes of course seg fault. Hello, The ICU4C readme says that the define U_STATIC_IMPLEMENTATION should be defined in user code that links against ICU's static libraries. Grepping the entire Boost, I do not see it. Hi, i just started using boost interprocess for giving shared memory access to one of my program to the debugger. It is just superb! but as usual there are a few questions and clarifications, 1) can i find any document saying which of the stl containers are "shared memory safe" so that i dont need to use the special one provided ? esp which of the stl containers from msvc 7.1 (2003) are shmm safe . 2) how can i make my hand crafted container shmm compatible ? I take allocater as param, pointer & ref are typedef from allocater, all construct & destroy are done using allocator. thanks again for the wonderful library abir

Undefined reference to 'main' with Boost Test. Why?

Why in the heck did the boost unit test framework change to remove main? Why does the documentation not reflect this? Why are the example describing the old behavior? How am I now suppose to use the Boost unit test framework? Visual C++ does not recognize lambda metafunction as such

I just tried to build this code in visual studio 2005, and got error: error C3201: the template parameter list for class template 'boost::mpl::bind2<F,T1,T2>::apply' does not match the template parameter list for template parameter 'boolfunc' This code works fine with gcc, and boost mpl portability page (http://www.boost.org/libs/mpl/doc/tutorial/portability.html) says my version of visual studio should be able to compile this. However, it appears to think the lambda< ... >::type::apply is not a metafunction. Another Regex Question

This is both a Regex syntax and a boost question (in, so here goes... I've got the following code to strip out all <a>, <frame>, and <iframe> tags from a webpage and parse them for their href or src attributes (yes, I realize that it can potentially grab an <a src=""> or an <iframe href="">, but that's ok for this project). Surprise surprise, it doesn't work quite as I'd hoped, and I was wondering if you could help me ascertain the problem: (pageSource is a pointer to a string containing the source of the page; the project specifications allow for the attribute to be formatted with either a single or double quote or neither around the actual URL. It correctly finds each tag and attribute, but it's grabbing the URL and also the "> that follow it.) program_options: Printing options and their values

I am using program_options and want to write to the screen the options and their values. This allows me to verify everything is working properly before I execute a long running command. I thought I could just iterate over the map and print out each option, but that requires casting the option to a specific variable which must be known a priori. I just ssh'd onto a Linux machine here at my school and compiled and ran it there, and the test code works fine, so I guess I have a problem with my boost install. All I did was download the tar, untar it, cd into the directory, and run "sudo make install". It ran for about four hours (I have an older Powerbook G4). Did I miss a step? Dave

REG_PERLEX Revisited...

In follow up to the message and response quoted below. Boost regex seems to work fine on Mac OS X and on our Linux platforms. But, on Windows 32 bit we have the following situation. Note this message is a little bit on the long side given that I am including a short program and the output from running on Windows and Linux platforms. The brief program shown below illustrates this problem. The results are from the Linux and Windows 32-bit machine. You can see on Windows when using the Posix API, I get the right offset only if I use boost::REG_PERL or boost::REG_PERLEX. On Linux, it works fine for all flags. Update: the fixed regex (removed the colon in "(?:i)") works to capture the script tags and their enclosure and remove it from the string. Mac OS X 10.5.2 Xcode 3.0 on an Intel Core Duo 2 Macbook Pro. Hi everyone, I'm trying to parse an HTML page using the Regex library and am running in to errors. In the following snippets, "pageSource" is a string pointer to the contents of an html file. Hi, I'm still having problems with this issue, so I'll repost it: This is my setup: Windows XP SP2 Visual Studio 2005 STLport-5.1.5 boost_1_34_1 I'm trying to write a tiny program, just to get stlport and boost to play nice together and I still have "unresolved external symbol" errors. I downloaded stlport-5.1.5 and built it according to the instructions: * configure.bat -c msvc8 * nmake /f msvc.mak * nmake /f msvc.mak install I also added stlport\bin to my path Next, I downloaded the boost_1_34_1 windows installer and checked all the options to get all the libraries and added it to my path. Next, I configured visual studio 2005 as follows: Tools -> Options -> Project and Solutions -> VC++ Directories -> Show directories for: Include Files: Add the path to stlport headers (D:\Program Files\STLport-5.1.5\stlport) Library Files: Add the path to stlport libs (D:\Program Files\STLport-5.1.5\lib) Next, on the project level, I Added __STL_DEBUG to the list of preprocessors. I'm trying to build a Multi-threaded Debug DLL (/MDd). I also set the (/Zc:wchar_t-) option. I also added "D:\Program Files\boost\boost_1_34_1" to the list of Additional Include Directives. When I tried to link, I got an error saying that libboost_program_options-vc80-mt-gdp-1_34_1.lib could not be found, so I had to build it. I edited the user-config.jam file to add the following line: using stlport : : D:/Program Files/STLport-5.1.5 D:/Program Files/STLport-5.1.5/lib ; This is the command I used to build the new lib bjam --toolset=msvc-8.0 link=static stdlib=stlport threading=multi cxxflags="-Zc:wchar_t-" --with-program_options -a -d2 I built the lib and moved it from bin.v2 to lib. Hi, I've recently started studying the book "c++ template meta programming" (I like it a lot!) and one of my own exercises was to get an integral type's max/min value. Of course I can turn off the compiler warnings but since the warning happens in integral_wrapper.hpp and the integral constant stuff is included in many other files including the boost type traits it would be tedious to always remember to include integral_c.hpp explicitly before any other headers with the warnings turned off. Serialization registration?

Hi, boost::serialization is wonderful. It has saved a massive amount of effort when adding XML based storage to an existing C++ drawing library. A very big thank you to the author and the team. Questions arising: 1. After one or two crash & burn cycles i discovered the need to register derived classes in the 'save through a virtual base class pointer' scenario. Right now this is done when saving to/loading from the archive. Is there an alternative to this method that ensures registration occurs automatically? i'm sure this is a FAQ but cannot find a definitive answer. i..e // XML archive boost::archive::xml_iarchive ia(ifs); // ensure derived types are registered - too easy to forget, what's the better way? ia.register_type(static_cast<CDiagramButton*>(NULL)); 2. Serializing to a binary storage should be a great way to implement undo/redo and clipboard functionality - has anyone found fame and fortune doing this? Cheers Jerry.

I just recently started using boost and had a question about the ++operator for iterators. Also you have no control over the order of elements: they may be stored by row, by column, or in yet another way! Boost forceinline?

Hi, I read a thread a while back posted on the boost mailing list concerning a need for a portable forced inline option from the boost library. Instead of giving the OP a direct answer, conversation lead on to discussion involving use cases for forced inline and whether or not it was appropriate to use it, which wasn't very helpful. Hi, It seems the ublas::matrix don't have begin() and end() that the ordinary STL container would have. It do have begin1(), begin2(), end1(), end2(), but it only traverse a row or a column. So, how could I use the iterators rather than hand-crafted for-loop to traverse the whole matrix? e.g., copy( matrix.begin(), matrix.end(), ostream_iterator<element_type>(cout, " ") ) ; // ERROR: won't compile: matrix don't have begin & end (I know matrix have overloaded the operator<<, it's only an example )

On a Windows 32 bit platform we are forced to use REG_PERLEX on the regcomp flags argument whereas for the same application we get by using a zero flag value on regcomp on platforms: Mac OS X and Linux. Hello, I used boost thread library a lot and like it very much. Currently, I was reading the C++ Standerd proposal and saw that a thread (as well as boost::thread) does not have a priority. Which reason was it not to implement the thread priority in boost, and why is it not considered in the upcoming standard? I understand this feature is rarely required, but if someone suddenly needs to start a real-time priority thread he/she will be forced to use a third party lib again. Or is there smth. what I miss? [statechart] Getting state information into the machine

I'm using the Statechart Library in conjunction with the really exciting Asio Library to set up a communication server. There is a very helpful documentation of the Statechart Library too. But one topic is puzzling me: How to to get data into the state machine? Here is an simple example: Each session object of the server has two states: signed-off and authorized. Receiving a login event leads to a transition to the authorized state. Thats pretty easy. But the login data (stored in the login event) got lost. I can hold this data in the state machine itself (outermost_context()). Or I can use a pseudo event to forward this data to the authorized state. But I'm looking for a nifty way to avoid this overhead. I like this concept of state-local storage very much. But I'm not shure about how to use it.

Query state on an asynchronous_state_machine

Hi. Can anyone tell me how to query a state on an asynchronous_state_machine? The obvious answer would be to say use the state_downcast method (which is inherited from state_machine. But in practise it seems harder than so. But opposed to state_machine, when using asynchronous_state_machine the instance is not created explicitely, it is created implicitely by the scheduler, like this: myMachine = myEventHandler.create_processor<AsyncMachine>(); , hence there is no handle to the state machine itself. All I have is a handle to the processor (sc::fifo_scheduler<>::processor_handle ). So is there a way to come from sc::fifo_scheduler<>::processor_handle to AsyncMachine (which inherits sc:asynchronous_state_machine)? Jarl

[Boost.Iterators] iterator_facade + a class design issue

Dear all, I've decided to write an ABC named BasicIterator, from which all derived iterators are to be descended. The reason being that I have to refer to iterators inside an interface and I need a general base type as a place holder to which I can refer. Besides, I don't want to use CRTP in the interface, but I don't care if I'm forced to use it inside BasicIterator. As discussed in the interoperability section of iterator_facade (here<http://www.boost.org/libs/iterator/doc/iterator_facade.html#interoperability>), the euqal() function must be templatized. The problem is that I have to make equal() a pure virtual member function in order to force derived types override it, but templated virtual functions on the other hand, are not valid. So I was wondering what the best approach is. How can I achieve both of these goals? Please advise. Any ideas/suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance

Can anyone with advanced template-fu show me to an adaptation of remove_copy_if to be copy_if ? I do realize you just have to negate the predicate parameter of remove_copy_if. In conjunction with the first alpha release of our Pion CEP Platform, Atomic Labs is happy to announce a new release (v0.5.4) of the Pion Network Library, an active, fully-functional and Boost-licensed HTTP 1.0/1.1 client/server library built on top of asio. This new release contains several enhancements, including the ability to define alternative thread management and work scheduling for each server instance (PionScheduler is no longer a singleton), and the ability to bind any function object (or function if you use boost::bind) to an HTTP resource (the use of WebService plugins is now optional). We've also added a std::basic_iostream wrapper for TCPConnection objects called TCPStream. In addition, we fixed several bugs that were identified within the last (v0.5.2) release, including issues with parsing chunked entity content, and with parsing responses that include neither "Content- Length" nor "Transfer-Encoding" HTTP headers. Also, the HTTPRequest and HTTPResponse objects now sort HTTP headers using a case- insensitive map, so lookups should now work properly regardless of the capitalization used (if any). Although we have several new things planned for the next few months (such as adding support for user authentication), the networking library is now mostly stabilized and ready for general use. The Pion CEP Platform is open source software, published under the GNU Affero GPL license. The platform is a real-time event processing engine that is designed to be extremely extensible through the use plugins. Plugins can be developed to provide specialized data processing logic, web services, and to enable support for different data encoding formats and databases. [boost graph] : trouble with the add_edge function

Hi, I use the add_edge () function to build my graph. Works almost perfect. While analysing my graph I found there have been add vertices created, I have have no idea where is is going to happen. Platform-specific Boost filesystem warning

(Please forgive me if this has already been discussed, I'm new to the list and wasn't able to find it.) I'm using Boost 1.34.1 under MSVC8 and am experiencing a compile warning that I thought was a bit odd. Whenever I include convenience.hpp, I and up with the following warning: d:\prgrmmng\libraries\boost_1_34_1\boost\filesystem\convenience.hpp(46) : warning C4245: 'argument' : conversion from 'int' to 'boost::filesystem::system_error_type', signed/unsigned mismatch I eventually tracked this down to the following code in path.hpp: # ifdef BOOST_WINDOWS_API typedef unsigned system_error_type; BOOST_FILESYSTEM_DECL errno_type lookup_errno( system_error_type sys_err_code ); # else typedef int system_error_type; inline errno_type lookup_errno( system_error_type sys_err_code ) { return sys_err_code; } # endif Why is system_error_type given a different type depending on the platform?

Extending Multi Array

Hi list members, This is a more or less a general kind of " how to extend container classes" question - I'm trying to write a class which inherits from boost::multi_array - the to get a kind of matrix class with some additional service routines. [python] redirecting PyErr_Print()

Hi, Right now when an exception occurs in boost.python, I simply call PyErr_Print() to print the message to a console window. However, I would like to be able to have the option of redirecting the output of PyErr_Print() to a string, file, or any other ostream interface compatible object I choose. Is there an easy way to do this (possibly using boost)? My searching on the internet has not really shown any useful results. The answers I've seen involve creating pipes, which I don't want to do because it is non trivial. I was hoping boost could shine in this area since it seems to be a common issue.

I am currently using the function load_verify_file("ca.pem"), however I don't want to write the certificate to end-users disk. boost::function "could not deduce template argument ..."

I apologize if this isn't the sort of question this list is intended for, but if anyone could help me with my lack of sufficient template howto skill I would appreciate it. Essentially what I have is class template for boost::function1<bool, const ValueType &> like so: template <typename ValueType> class predicate { public: typedef boost::function1<bool, const ValueType&> type; struct and { bool operator()(const ValueType &)() { return left_() && right(); } type left_; type right_; }; struct or { ... }; }; And what I want is to overload the & and | operators for predicate<ValueType>::type like so: template <typename ValueType> typename predicate<ValueType>::type operator &( const typename predicate<ValueType>::type &left, const typename predicate<ValueType>::type &right) { return typename predicate<ValueType>::and(left, right); } The problem is when I compile I get the error message "could not deduce template argument for 'ValueType'" when I compile. automake + boost lib versions

Hi altogether, I've got a problem with rolling a packet to distribute a library source - first I tried to do this with boost-build , but later on I had some difficulties and fell back to automake. What I need is a (hopefully convenient) way to deal with different versions of the boost libraries - because I have to expect that the names of these libraries will differ on nearly all machines a potential User of "my" library is trying to build the source. I tried to debug with gdb and this is what I get. [spirit] Segmentation fault when parsing grammar with threads

Hi out there, after searching for the cause of segmentation faults in my program i figured out that it happens while parsing my grammar with spirit. But this happens only if i run multiple threads, with only one thread all works as expected. [multi-index] question for a complex query

Hello *, I currently need to implement the following use case and was wondering if this is possible with multi-index: I have a class, for simplicity all members are public wihtout accessors and mutators: class entry { public: field x; field y; filed z; }; I need a multi-index index to remember the order in which the elements were inserted and non uniquely index the inserted elements by hash of field x; Now a client could do the following queries: - get all entries in the order they were inserted (this is easy and I know how to do it) - get all entries which satisfy field x parameter in the order they were inserted. I know that I can retrieve the values dependent on hash(x), but these are probably not sorted. I know that I can project iterators, but can I project (range_retireved_via_hashed_X) to (range_retrieved_for_sequence_of_X) May be I miss smth here or should split my data in some other way to satisfy this condition. I have a 64 bit red hat linux (also 64 bit) box. 1) I downloaded boost from boost_1_34_1.tar.bz2 <http://downloads.sourceforge.net/boost/boost_1_34_1.tar.bz2?modtime=1185241 108&big_mirror=0> 2) Unizipped and installed it (./configure , make install ) everything worked fine. [BGL] vertex_descriptors in STL containers

Hi, I have written a program that works if I use vecS for the vertices and fails often with a crash when I use listS. vecS vertex descriptors are effectivly int so they pose no problem when used in std::set and std::map but listS vertex descriptors are of type void*. Could it be that comparison fails in the sets or could I have problems with a copy constructor somewhere? I know that STL is not designed to handle pointers but in my case the pointers could just be handled for their address value. The graph is not changed during my calculations. Cheers, Torsten

Hello, I realize that this library is not yet part of the boost distribution but I am using it and have come accross an issue. I am concerned that the logic in the various check functions may be flawed. Take for example the check_uniform function. The logic is as follows: if lower Ok && upper Ok && lower < upper return true else raise error stating that lower must be less than upper return false end if The functions used to determine if lower and upper are ok will raise errors if appropriate. If the policy is such that raising an error does not cause a throw, then control will return to the check_uniform method with an indication that lower or upper is not ok and we will enter the else block. Herein lies the problem. Consider the following scenario: creating a uniform distribution with: lower = 0.0 upper = postitive infinity Check upper will fail and send a message about the infinity. Enter the else block. A message will be raised that states that the lower parameter is not less than the upper. This is my concern. I believe the second message is unnecessary and potentially incorrect/misleading. Perhaps logic like shown below would be more appropriate: if lower not Ok || upper not Ok then return false else if lower >= upper raise error stating that lower must be less than upper return false else return true end if Thanks, John

Hi; I'm a newbie to regex patterns and need help in a relative simple task: I use boost::regex with perl syntax and I have to parse user input that provides a feature similar to the conditional formatting of cells in OpenOffice Calc. The string the user enters looks like this: >=30 [fg:red] [bg:white] or <0.0 [fg:none] [bg:transparent] First the user can enter an optional operator (> < <> = <= >=) followed by a integer or floating point number. This whole term is optional so [fg:red] [bg:white] is also a valid expression. The terms for color selection are partly optional, so valid expressions are [fg:red] or [bg:white] or [fg:red][bg:white] or [bg:white][fg:red] The key words for foreground and background colors are predefined by the software (red, green, blue, transparent, none, ...). Hello everybody, I want a stream view of a dynamically allocated BYTE* buffer I have at hand. At first I thought boost::iostreams::basic_array< BYTE > would do the job since they're the closest thing I found in Boost IOStreams library, but as it turns out I was wrong, since the code fails to compile with dynamically allocated buffers. typedef boost::iostreams::basic_array< unsigned char > MemoryDevice; typedef boost::iostreams::stream< MemoryDevice > MemoryStream; BYTE* mem = new BYTE[ 1000 ]; MemoryDevice memoryDevice( mem ); MemoryStream memoryStream( memoryDevice ); I was wondering if there are any available streams that are capable of providing stream-like behavior to such buffers, or should I write a device to handle them? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Dear group, I am trying to provide generic toString/fromString methods (to provide an interface to SWIG/Python serialization), which I'd like to implement in a base class CSGObject (from which all other classes are derived), such that the correct serialization code is called each time. After a bit of fiddling around (and with the help of the archive of this mailing list) I've got the toString method to work. However, things don't seem to be as straight for the fromString method. The following code illustrates what I'd like to do: virtual std::string toString() const { std::ostringstream s; boost::archive::text_oarchive oa(s); oa << this; return s.str(); } virtual void fromString(std::string str) { std::istringstream is(str); boost::archive::text_iarchive ia(is); //cast away constness CSGObject* tmp = const_cast<CSGObject*>(this); ia >> tmp; *this=*tmp; } However, although the correct serialization methods get called, only the information contained in the base class gets restored correctly, but none of the fields in any derived classes. My C++ is quite rusty, but I believe this is because *this is not a pointer and is thus statically bound. I hope there is a solution to this - how would you implement a fromString method like this? Hi, I seem to be having similar problems to this post: http://lists.boost.org/boost-users/2007/10/31648.php My MPI implementation is MPICH2; the first example in the docs at http://www.osl.iu.edu/~dgregor/boost.mpi/doc/mpi/tutorial.html works fine (this just creates a communicator and prints each process' rank). Unlike the person in the linked post, I haven't had any other MPI libraries installed before, so there should be no inconsistencies. This problem occurs with 32 and 64-bit compiled libs built from subversion repos. code today. Thanks Tom

[foreach][range] How would BOOST_REVERSE_FOREACH be implemented?

Boost.Foreach is such a great piece of kit that once you start using it you just can't stop. Indeed I like working directly with values rather than iterators so much that is feels normal for me to write something like BOOST_FOREACH( value_type x , make_iterator_range( rbegin( seq ) , rend( seq ) ) whenever I wish to reverse iterate over a sequence. My co-workers are not big fans of typing though, so they want a REVERSE_FOREACH. At first naïve glance it looks easy to implement in terms of the original FOREACH: template<typename C> inline iterator_range</* something */> make_reverse_iterator_range(C& c) { return make_iterator_range( rbegin(c) , rend(c) ); } #define REVERSE_FOREACH( x , container ) BOOST_FOREACH( x , make_reverse_iterator_range( container ) ) This works fine when container is an lvalue. But then co-workers, used to the wonders of the original FOREACH, inevitably start to use the new macro with rvalues and get a crash due to dangling references (- the iterator_range's members point to departed quantities.....) and if you could somehow work around that, there is the issue hidden inside the "/* something */" that you have to cope with fact that MSVC has no proper const rvalue detection. Finally the #define MACRO(x,y) ANOTHER_MACRO( f(x) , g(y) ) style is not recommended because they are brittle in the face of x and/or y themselves being macros. ... but all these issues are exactly the ones that BOOST_FOREACH itself solves! Thus surely it is technically possible to write a REVERSE_FOREACH that works with rvalues as well as lvalues, e.g. by essentially copying and pasting the FOREACH implementation and replacing "begin" and "end" by "rbegin" and "rend" in the vital places. However one feels there may be a better way... has anyone had a go at creating a "fully-functional" REVERSE_FOREACH and could offer me any advice? If indeed the task is fairly intricate and requires re-use of foreach internals, would the library author consider including something in the library itself? Many thanks for reading, Pete Bartlett

boost::ptr_array to use or not?

Hi, I have an pointer array of objects as follows: bucket * m_buckets[BUCKET_SIZE]; Because this array is a set size does it make sense to use a boost::ptr_array? boost::ptr_array<bucket, BUCKET_SIZE> m_buckets; * Note: One thing I first noticed with boost::array is that I cannot perform operations such as inserting at a desired index: // Existing code. m_buckets[bit] = new bucket(k,v); My goal is to use as many smart pointers as I can and less heap allocation.
