What syntax do I use to build both static and shared libraries? Is there a doc page anywhere that explains basic bjam command line syntax? I'm tired of having to ask stupid questions like this all the time. The Getting Started Guide contains too little info and, to me, the Boost Build reference documentation is completely unintelligible. --Johan

[Serialization] Why is std::string a primitive type? Tracking for share_ptr

Here's my understanding of the situation: As has been mentioned on the list before, Boost.Serialize refuses to serialize shared_ptrs to primitive types because tracking is turned off for primitive types and cannot be turned on. Primitive types used in my example include size_t,int,double, and std::string. I can understand (sort of) why you wouldn't want to track all the numeric types, but I don't understand why std::string is considered now considered a primitive. (Looking at boost/serialization/string.hpp indicates that it wasn't a primitive type at some point.) The way that's mentioned in the archive to get around this is to use BOOST_STRONG_TYPEDEF(int,tracked_int) etc. This would require that I change the data structure (an intrusive change) and add a static_cast< T&>(variable) everywhere these wrapped variables are used. (This is because the "strong" typedef really just makes a new class with your type inside it with basic methods defined.) The other possible solution that I've looked at is to define void serialize(Archive &ar, boost::shared_ptr<T> & arg, const unsigned int version) myself for all my primitive types. That seems like the wrong thing to do, but I'll probably do something with that until I find a better way. I might be missing something, but couldn't boost/serialization/shared_ptr.hpp be rewritten to keep track of all the pointers that it sees without turning tracking on for all primitive types? Basically just automatically track anything that's inside a shared_ptr. The programmer shouldn't be storing both a shared_ptr to memory and a normal pointer to the same memory anyway. Other info: Boost trunk r44086 (yesterday) built on Ubuntu with g++. (I had been using 1.33.1 but that seemed to have problems serializing vector<int>.) Thanks, Jeffrey

Hello *, I have a question regarding string comparisons. Are the comparisons below suppose to work in VC 7.1 boost 1.34.0? boost file system library question

All, I have been having some bad experiences with copying directories. I am currently using system(xcopy /e source destination). Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't which landed me here. I am trying to get a simple test working to emulate this with the boost libs. I have only been coding in C++ for two weeks. So I accept all suggestions and critisim. Also if anyone had any insight into the security implications of the xcopy system call vs. the boost filesystem lib that would be helpful. Thanks in advance, Dj

Cannot compile boost 1.35 under ubuntu linux

Hello. I tried to configure boost in order to be able to install it. But the configure archive seems to be broken. bash: ./configure: /bin/sh^M: bad interpreter: No such file or directory The output shows a ^M symbol after /bin/sh. It seems to be an encoding problem. So I tried to delete that line and invoke the script with the shell explicitly: /bin/bash ./configure --prefix=/usr But I get this error: : command not found: : command not found: : command not found2: : command not found7: '/configure: line 29: syntax error near unexpected token `do '/configure: line 29: `do Any solution, please? drop-dead simple example of custom Boost.Range?

I'm trying to get boost range and iterator to work. I've got so many questions, I don't know where to start. So, rather than post a specific compiler error, let's go back to square one. How about a concrete example of fitting a UDT with Boost.Range? Say I have a class with a non-trivial iterator type (not a pointer!) I'd like to modify the class so that Boost.Range is happy. At some point, I feel as though I just end up arbitrarily copying snippets from the docs in the hope that it will all work. Is there something I'm not "getting" about boost.range? The code below is an attempt to create a working skeleton example. Obviously, the author lacks whatever magic spell book is required to put it all together -- "it" being a user-defined type, plus Boost.Range. Seems like something as simple as a modeling a range should be easier than breathing, so I'm hoping it actually is, and that I'm just missing something totally obvious to everyone else. So, is the following skeleton correct? Where does it go awry? [Proto] Review result

Hi all, initially I was hoping to find some time over the last weekend to go through the reviews in great detail to put together a proper review report. Well, as things happen, I was not able to find the time :-( To avoid further delays, here is the short version of the review result: Proto got 16 reviews (That's well above average! Thanks to all for participating), out of which 15 have been positive. The one 'No' essentially stated that the library, even if doubtless very useful, shouldn't be accepted yet, mainly because there has to be done more work in the area of formalizing the problem domain. In my opinion this is an overwhelming result and I'm whole heartily agreeing with the majority of the voters. Proto is accepted as a Boost library. The discussions have been very detailed and there have been raised a lot of (mostly minor) issues, but Eric is aware of the problems and is working on solving them. Network Attached Memory

With Java, there exists something called Network Attached Memory (a Terracotta product). It basically increases the effective RAM of any single machine by allowing it to use RAM on another machine. But that's Java. Is there an equivalent thing for C++? Specifically, I have a cluster of nodes with a moderate amount of memory (8 gbytes each) and a very fast network (10 microsecond small message latency and 750 mbytes/second large message bandwidth). I have a C++ application that needs tens of gbytes of RAM. Is there some kind of product, or library, that would allow the C++ application to seemlessly use the memory on other nodes as if it had a much larger RAM? Linking boost libraries under visual c++ 2008

Hello. I compiled boost successfully for windows xp with visual c++ 9 toolchain. But when I try to link the regex example, visual studio looks for 'libboost-regex...' but the file produced for that file is 'boost-regex...' without the lib prefix. I don't know if this is a boost problem or a visual studio configuration problem. Anyway, do you know how can I solve this problem and link libraries with visual studio? I googled a lot but found no answer. Thanks in advance.

That pattern seems better suited to your overall approach -- if (and only if) you can be sure that a user will never use a deleted true pointer. boost::bind triggers seg fault if compiled with gcc optimizations

Hello, I'm using boost::bind to bind some member function of class two arguments, making it a nullary function call. If I compile things with any optimizations, then the resulting code causes seg-faults. Without optimizations, everything is fine. Any ideas? Some possible workaround? BTW, boost::lambda::bind results in the same behavior. My versions: gcc 4.1.3 on ubuntu gutsy, boost 1.35.0 Greetings, Sebastian Weber

Hi, i have Microsoft VC 8.0 and the actual Microsoft Vista SDK install on my box. When i try to build boost with bjam with the following parameters: "bin\bjam.exe" -d 0 stage --stagedir=. --toolset=msvc link=static runtime-link=shared architecture=x86 release debug address-model=32 i do get vc9 used instead of the vc8. How can i "tell" bjam to generate the library using vc8 instead of vc9? Any help is welcome Regards Mike

Hi there! The fusion library seems to be the choice for handling tuple-like data in C++. However, for some reasons I would like to be able to transform a fusion vector into a pod object. Something like: fusion::vector<int, double, float> myVec; SOME_MAGIC_ADAPTER_MACRO(myVec) The macro or whatever should then turn the vector into struct myVec_pod { int v1; double v2; float v3; }; or similar. [Boost][Signals]Can a threadpool implementation be done using signals??

I had a look into boost Signals and I just want to know whether a threadpool implementation can be done using signals(as they are thread safe).? However will this be efficient in terms of performance when I do the threadpool implementation using a thread safe queue(guarded by mutexes) where in tasks are queued into the queue and worker threads in the threadpool pick out tasks and execute them.. Hi everyone, I'm currently setting up an image processing pipeline for large (out of core) GIS images using GIL. I'm quite glad with the results I get right now, but I stumbled upon a problem with the default image_view size / iterator handling. Currently, image_view::size_type is defined as std::size_t, and image_view::end is implemented as begin()+(difference_type)size<http://stlab.adobe.com/gil/html/structboost_1_1gil_1_1size.html> (); As my images pixel count exceed the max value of std::size_t on my dev platform (win32), the image_view::end member function fails to give a valid iterator... As nearly every types defined in image_view are given by the templated locator type, I'm thinking that the size_type should not be an exception, and should be given by the locator type. I also tend to think that the 'image iterators' should not share the difference_type type with the '1D iterators' - but these are mainly performance considerations in my case, as my image iterators should be 64bits, and my 1d iterators can be 32 bits. For now, I changed my GIL working copy to patch image_view definition, as I did not see any way to work around the iterator problem. Did I miss anything ? Is there any user-level workaround I could use, or should the image_view class be modified ? Any thoughts would be welcome :) Thanks, Nicolas.

[bjam --toolset=msvc stage] doesn't seem to generate nearly as much as it used to, and my vc8 program now complains it can't find: libboost_program_options-vc80-mt-sgd-1_35.lib I can't find it either... I tried the latest bjam, 3.1.16. I tried --build_type=complete, I tried -a. I suspect I'm doing something obvious wrong... any suggestions? Thanks, Andy

One of them is the following (16.4.2, p.387): char expr1[] = "abc[d-f]"; regex rgx2(expr1, 3); >From the boost headers I can see that it picks up the wrong costructor, since the constructor with length specification has 3 arguments (and the last has no default specification). Who is wrong? I am using Visual Studio 2003 and boost 1.34.0.

I downloaded the accumulators lib from boost vault. So, is boost::accumulators still compliant with boost 1.35 ? Floating Point Utilities Review Result. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ There were 6 positive reviews and no negative ones, so Johan Rade's Floating Point Utility library has been accepted into Boost. The main issues and topics that came up for discussion were: 1) A couple of minor bugs were uncovered relating to signed NaN testing when using the SSE2 registers, and deserialising NaN's: both were fixed during the review period. 2) We had a discussion about the usefulness or otherwise of signed NaN's and the changesign function: Johan agreed to drop support for these as the signbit of NaN's is not considered part of the NaN payload and need not be preserved by the compiler, this could usefully be summarised in a rationale: especially now that negative NaN's are not formatted with a "-" sign? 3) JM made a few quite fruitless suggestions about optimising away calls to memcpy: this should be documented in a rationale to prevent JM from making the same mistake again :-) 4) John Phillips raised the issue of finding these tools - making sure that they don't get lost amongst all the other special functions and "stuff" in Boost.Math. JM and Johan have agreed to work together to ensure this doesn't happen. 5) There were a couple of suggestions for a convenience function for installing the facets in a locale/iostream: Johan agreed to add this. 6) There was +1 vote for manipulators rather than flags to the facet constructors - further investigation suggested this was problematic in a header only library - so the suggestion was dropped. 7) There was one comment about the library not using quickbook for documentation: ideally it would be nice to see this fixed so that the docs integrate seamlessly with the rest of Boost.Math - but see #4 as well. [boost::function] Getting base class pointer of functor ?

Hello there, Short version: Are there any reasons, why base class access is currently not allowed/implemented in boost::function (via target() function)? Long version/explanation/scenario: I have a class using boost::any which I use for data exchange between different modules of my program. Some modules are able to process the data if it contains "numbers" (in contrast to other arbitrary data structures), ie. basically POD. These modules do not necessarily bother what _exact_ type the provided number is (some do, some don't) and might just use it as, e.g. double, so they don't care what type was originally inserted into the boost::any as long as they get a double-converted value out of it. As boost::any only allows to get the original type out of it with any_cast<T>, the class provides a set of conversion functions like boost::function< int () > toInt; boost::function< short () > toShort; ... ... struct Converter_base { Converter_base( const boost::any* a ) : m_any(a) {}; public: const boost::any* m_any; }; template< typename Target, typename Source > struct Converter : public Converter_base{ Converter( const boost::any* a ) : Converter_base(a) {}; T operator()() const { return boost::numeric_cast<Target>( * boost::any_cast<Source>( Converter_base::m_any ) ); }; }; template< typename SourceType > void setValue ( SourceType& value ) { m_value = value // this is boost::any toInt = Converter< int, SourceType > ( &m_value ); toShort = Converter< short, SourceType > ( &m_value ); ...... } This allows me to ask for the value converted to my desired type and receiving an exception if the conversion is not possible (or produces overflows). The problem is that the functor Converter is not copy-constructible because of the pointer to boost::any. So I have to take care of setting the correct pointer in the copy constructor of my data exchange class. In order to get the pointer to the converter functor and thus to the mep_any, I need to know SourceType. But since the module that provides the data and the module that consumes the data don't know about each other, the consumer doesn't know SourceType and cannot compile the appropriate copy constructor. Since mep_any is independent from the template arguments, I moved it to a base class Converter_base and let Converter inherit from it. Now, I want to access the functor via toInt.target<Converter_base>() in order to access/update the mep_any. But target() returns 0 .... Huh? I just got the whole trunk, and built it. Still the same problem: it can't read in std::vector<int> created with 1.34.1 Anyway how would a fix in trunk help? -I can't use the released version 1.35, as it can't read in older files. -I can't use trunk in our program, only released/tested versions. I just tried compiling with trunk, seems there are some other issues in other libraries that would take some work. (something went missing in the signals library) Yes, I can add item_version into the optimised versions of vector.hpp, but how is it going to work in 1.36? If you'd tell how you would fix it in the 1.35 version, I could use just that fix in our version, untill 1.35.1 or 1.36 comes out. [StringAlgo] Need help to use find_format()

Hi, I'm having a hard time trying to use the find_format() function provided in the Algorithm/String library. In the examples provided in the Concepts page, 2 examples of finder and formatter are provided: simple_finder and simple_formatter. The first problem is a typing error in simple_finder that prevents it form compiling, I've opened a ticket to fix this (#1761). The second problem is that simple_finder uses a function called make_range that I can't find anywhere in the Boost headers. What is this function? Am I supposed to write it myself? The third problem is that I can't find any example of actual use of those classes. I thought that this: find_format(string("foobar"), simple_finder(), simple_formatter()); would compile and run (basically replacing the whole string by the same string), but after having tried to get rid of the second problem by de-templatizing the simple_finder to adapt it to string, it doesn't compile. bjam has the option --build-type=complete Is it somehow possible (other than manually editing the Makefile) to specify this option when calling configure? (I'm asking because I'd like to script the build of Boost; and so far it only builds in release mode. I'd like to avoid to edit Makefile on any machine I need to build Boost on.) [GIL] Default constructing pixels??

I am used to explicitly invoking the default constructor to initialize values to 'zero', but that does not seem to work with GIL. In the following code: template<class View> void do_something(View const& img){ typedef typename View::value_type pixel_type; pixel_type black = pixel_type(); //I expect zero, I guess this may not always be black... //..... } The value held in 'black' turns out to be 205 (I think it is acting like uninitialized stack data). Is this the intended behavior? I have a slew of code that used to work this way and somehow now it does not - did this behavior change recently? In the meantime I just made a struct named black with a typecast operator enabled for gil pixels. -- John

unordered_map memory footprint

Hey guys, Hash tables are new to me since they have never been part of the C++ standard template library, and having started C++ as my first language I have never been exposed to them. Ever since unordered_map appeared in the Boost library, I've been trying to understand how they function in terms of functionality, memory, and performance. A major source of information has been from Wikipedia, specifically this page<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hash_table>. Below I have outlined a few questions concerning boost::unordered_map: 1. From what I've read, the performance of a hash table is O(1), however it mentions that depending on specific situations it may be O(n). Is this true with unordered map? If so, what conditions would force it to maintain O(n) complexity? 2. What is the memory footprint of an unordered_map? From my research, hash tables seem to be a simple wrapper over an array in that the size of the "internal array" in the hash table will contain as many elements as the largest hash value generated by one of the key elements. So if I put two elements in my hash table and the generated keys are 200 and then 1,000,000, then the hash table would be 1,000,000 elements in size (which is at least a megabyte of memory in the most optimistic scenario). This logic is rather ridiculous and impractical, so I am pretty sure I'm misunderstanding how the memory mechanics work under the hood for an unordered_map. Those are the biggest questions I have now and if I think of more I'll most certainly be providing follow-up posts. I thank everyone in advance for reading and helping.

Hi, It appears boost::iostreams::newline_filter(posix) converts all CRs into LFs rather than just converting the sequence CRLF. In other words: "\rtext\r\r\n" is converted to "\ntext\n\n" when I would have expected "\rtext\r\n". Indeed the latter is what dos2unix does on my linux system. Is this a bug in the newline_filter? Hi, I need conversion from strings to integers. But the strings could also be hex numbers. So example is, typedef unsigned long hexType; hexType value; lexical_cast<HexType>("0xAABBCCDD"); How do we extend the boost::lexical_cast to support casting user defined types? I can perform this by specialization but those would need to be in boost namespace which does not seem to be a recommended way to add customizations. Thanks, Shiva

Datetime: time_of_day and time_range concept

Hello everyone While implementing a job scheduler that has to start jobs at specific times (i.e. daily at 08:15) and during specific time ranges (every Monday between 16:20 and 18:00), the need for two new concepts that represents a time (detached from a date) and a time range between two time_of_day came up. While time_duration almost fits these needs, there are some things that we had to take into account: - A time_of_day must be normalized to only allow hours >= 0 && hours < 24 - Only the substract operator makes sense to calculate the duration between to times (15:30 - 12:00 = 3 hours and 30 minutes). 12:20 + 15:32 does not make sense. I m writing a daemon and I use boost::asio::async_read_until() to fill a boost::asio::streambuf buffer. [Boost.Spirit] how to extend a grammar

Lets say I have a simple calculator grammar like the one defined in trunk\libs\spirit\example\fundamental\calc_plain.cpp Now I would like to extend that grammar e.g. add support for sqrt() One way would be modifying the existing grammar class (patch provided) But what I would like is to create a new class that uses or inherits from the existing grammar class to provide the extended behavior. That is, I would need both the calculator and the extended_calculator classes available, and without code duplication. ¿Is this possible?

Boost tokenizer and range support

Hi, I've been using the boost tokenizer successfully in the past and I've been quite happy with it. I was using it with std::string as my token type, but now I need to use it differently because of performance reasons (the input string is a raw UTF8 buffer (const unsigned char*) and output is a specific UTF16 string class). So I thought: maybe I can just tokenize the unsigned char buffer in place using boost::iterator_range<const unsigned char*> as my token type. And it almost worked! With a hack: the tokenizer attempts to call assign on my TokenType but boost::iterator_range doesn't have such member function. I created a wrapper class that simply delegates to the iterator_range's assignment operator and it now works! This is great because I have no more useless string constructions: I can go directly from a raw UTF8 buffer to my output string type (UTF16 based) with only one conversion and no extra allocations! I still have the nice syntax of boost tokenizer and the maximum efficiency! I think this solution should be mentioned in the tutorial docs because it might not be obvious for everybody. Also, maybe we can eliminate the hack I did by adding an assign() to the boost range interface (this seems simpler to me than modifying the tokenizer to not call assign). [string/range] 1.34.1 -> 1.35.0 problem

After rebuilding an app with Boost 1.35 (using Visual Studio 2008/VC9 [creating a 32-bit Unicode executable] on Windows XP SP2), some code (only in a release build) calling string_algo causes assertion failures at iterator_range.hpp lines 265 and 283 (iterator_range::begin and iterator_range::empty). The assertions are a result of calls to replace_all and istarts_with (in 2 places; each call in different functions and called multiple times from a single thread; thread data used in the calls is private to this thread). If all of these calls are removed: replace_all(<wstring variable>, L"/", L"\\"); if (istarts_with(<function returning wstring>, <function returning wstring>) return; if (istarts_with(<wstring variable>, L"www.")) <wstring variable>.erase(0, 4); the assertions do not occur. If any or all are left in, some assertions occur. When building w/ Boost 1.34.1, the original code works as expected with no assertions. Boost.Regex vs. Boost.Spirit

Thus I'm not so much surprised why Boost.Regex does not work. I'm much more surprised though that my compiler (VC++ 2008) doesn't report an error with the code above which uses Boost.Spirit. I don't know why the code using Boost.Spirit compiles (is this implementation-dependent or guaranteed behavior)? It would make using regular expressions in templates much easier though as regular expressions don't seem to depend on the Char type of strings (assuming this is a feature I can rely on)? Boris

Hello! I am wondering by what tag or branch (besides "release") (or just version) I can retrieve exatly same snapshot that was used for 1.35.0 from Subversion? Previous releases are available by RC_* tags, so I am wondering which one is used for 1.35? As general comment - may be is a good idea to have top "branch" called "releases" and then all packaged releases under it, so it is easier to find them in one place instead of going trhough all new and old working folders under branches subtree? Right now my Boost.Signal looks like below: boost::signal<void (Packet const& p)> Right now Packet is the base class for several other packet types, each having the specific data a subscriber needs access to. Of course, given this design, the only way to obtain the data is to perform a downcast via static_cast or dynamic_cast: WalkPacket const& wp = static_cast<WalkPacket const&>( p ); // 'p' here is a generic Packet object. This is obviously bad design since it isn't type safe at all. It's also repetitive and tedious since each subscriber must duplicate the logic to perform the downcast. I'm wondering if there's anything in Boost you guys can suggest that I use to make this a little better. I would prefer to have a common Signal object that can take differently typed Slot objects. For example, I want to pass in a slot that looks like: "void (WalkPacket& p)" and have the signal utilize implicit conversions or something. Templates aren't even being used here because I can't find a way to fit them in, since everything is being done at runtime and not compile time. Keep this important note in mind: The type of the packet that will be dispatched to subscribers can only be known at compile time via a factory method. Data is received from the network, and that data is packed into the correct packet and returned as a Packet* base class pointer, so that we can transfer the data to subscribers through a common interface.

Memory debugging

Hello, I am writing an application using mingw and boost (threads, multi-index, etc). I am searching for a memory debugger (leaks, buffer overruns) for this configuration. 1) I tried duma but not sure how to use it. It kept stopping in a "new" call inside boost. 2) couldn't get dmalloc to run properly. Error "dmalloc library has gone recursive". Has anyone used any memory debugger reliably with mingw and boost? Hello, I'm using dijkstra_shortest_paths() in a multi-graph, which seems to work fine. Via the predecessor map I get the vertices in the shortest path. I have a string class (tstring) which takes care of narrow <=> wide string conversions, and which provides operators for conversion to std::string and std::wstring: operator std::wstring &(); operator std::string &(); operator const std::wstring &() const; operator const std::string &() const; In Boost 1.33, I could do the following: boost::filesystem::path dir ("/foo"); tstring file ("bar"); boost::filesystem::path p = dir / file; In Boost 1.35, this no longer works; VS8 gives error C2679: binary '/' : no operator found which takes a right-hand operand of type 'const tstring' (or there is no acceptable conversion). However, if I change it to boost::filesystem::path p = dir; p /= file; then all is well. Also, boost::filesystem::path p = dir / std::string(file); boost::filesystem::path p = dir / boost::filesystem::path(file); work just fine. I don't understand the C++ type conversion rules well enough to understand why the conversion to std::string can happen automatically with operator/= but not operator/. Hi All, I'm upgrading some code from 1.34 to 1.35. [GIL] Level 4 warnings on VC8

I am trying to compile my code on VC8 at warning level (Level 4). There are several places in boost that produce warnings at this level, but the warnings have obvious simple fixes. (I can send a patch to this list when I have removed enough of them from my working copy in case the library authors care to address them). Along these lines I have a question/comment about GIL. The library uses a GIL_FORCEINLINE macro, presumably to increase performance of some functions. When I compile I get a slew of warning messages with warning "C4714 : function 'function-name' marked as __forceinline not inlined.". I am compiling whith /O2 option (Optimize for speed) and the /Ob2 flag (inline any suitable funciton). My question is: is this a problem for GIL? Obviously the authors have been trying hard to get that function call overhead removed and apparantly vc8 does not play nice with them. I don't know how to address this warning other than to temporarily disable warning 4714, but this is a case where the warning looks like it may be important. The warning indicates that the compiler is unable to inline the functions at these locations: c:\john\hvm\src\boost\boost\gil\algorithm.hpp(251) : copy_with_2d_iterators c:\john\hvm\src\boost\boost\gil\algorithm.hpp(587) : default_construct_range In my case the functions point me to locations in the STL: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\VC\include\functional(54) Unfortunately I can not list my code that exhibits the problem here (these warnings come from a large unreleasable project compiled with W3 in the past, and the messages don't help me find which specific parts of my code are instantiating the gil code). I am hoping that the authors will immediately understand the issue (since they used GIL_FORCEINLINE to begin with). Cheers, --John C. Femiani

Hi all! I'm starting to play with boost::fusion and I am amazed by its power - thanks for the library, its great! Nevertheless, I ran into some trouble: I have fusion vector of function objects which all have the same arity and take the same arguments. Now I want to call each function object via the fusion::invoke method, as I have the arguments also on in a fusion vector, so something like this: typedef fusion::vector< binary_function1, binary_function2, ...> funcVec; typedef fusion::vector< double, int > argType; funcVec funs; argType args(0.5, 3); Now my idea was to use boost::bind to do the trick like this: boost::transform(funcVec, bll::bind(&fusion::invoke<>, _1, args)); However, this does not work - the bind complains about unresolved overloaded function type. Automatically generate serialization code?

Hi there. I am looking for ideas about automatically generating the serialization helpers. Boost serialization library would be used - the question is about a simple (hopefully) and foolproof way of automatically creating the helpers. The classed that need serialization are modified on a daily basis by other developers. Maintaining the serialization code manually isn't an option - looking for an automated way. One possible approach: 1) Run a parser that scans the C++ code and identifies the data members of the classes that declare serialize() 2) Generate .inl files (one for each class to be serialized) with the boost::serialize() methods 3) Include the .inl files in the corresponding .cpps 4) Compile and link... An idea thrown by someone was to get the data members by getting the symbols from the .obj files - but this would require two compiles - one to generate the object files from where the symbols would be extracted, then another one... Definitely someone else had solved this problem (with the above approach or a different one). Please let me know your opinions. Functions that evaluate to constants

Hi, I realize that C++03 will not permit functions to evaluate down to compile-time constants. However, I cannot wait until C++0x for this feature. So, I'm hoping that Boost will allow a temporary solution. Consider the following structure: static struct nullptr_t { template< typename t_type > operator t_type*() { return 0; } } nullptr; The compiler has everything it needs to turn this code into a single integral constant value. So, if I do the following: int* foo; if( foo == nullptr ) { } Then it should evaluate down to: int* foo; if( foo == 0 ) { } Is there any way to provide this behavior in Boost? I would like to avoid altering the actual design if possible. Perhaps this actually *does* evaluate to a constant and the problem is that I'm actually unaware of some specific rule that I didn't find in the C++03 standard. Thanks.

Where: While instantiating "boost::io::basic_altstringbuf, std::allocator>::overflow(int)". Where: Instantiated from non-template code.1 Error(s) detected. I'd like to track down which part of my own code initiates the error, but frankly I'm not sure how to do that - the compiler output reports nothing but the above error. Defining Macro's using bjam or "config/user.hpp".

I have just downloaded Boost 1.35.0 for use with MSVC9 (Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0). As some of you may be aware, Microsoft has added some features which are a little troublesome to work around with Boost. They are controlled by the following macros (and perhaps others I've missed): - _CRT_SECURE_NO_WARNINGS - _SCL_SECURE_NO_WARNINGS - _SECURE_SCL I must say, I find building Boost a pain at the best of times, but I can't seem to find a way to define these macros on bjam's command line. Putting the changes in "boost/config/user.hpp" doesn't work and errors like the following result: basic_iserializer.cpp .\boost/config/user.hpp(128) : warning C4005: '_SECURE_SCL' : macro redefinition C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC\INCLUDE\yvals.h(124) : see previous definition of '_SECURE_SCL' The reason is in this instance is that "basic_iserializer.cpp" contains the following at the top: #include <cassert> #include <cstdlib> // NULL #include <boost/config.hpp> Note that <cassert> is included before <boost/config.hpp>: it's already too late then as including <cassert> results in the macros being defined. I have searched the web and found many "solutions", but I couldn't get any of them to work. Any help would be much appreciated. Steve

backwards compatibility

Hello, I realize that Boost doesn't promise ABI compatibility across releases, nor even API compatibility according to the FAQ: How can the Boost libraries be used successfully for important projects? Many of the Boost libraries are actively maintained and improved, so **backward compatibility with prior version isn't always possible**. Deal with this by freezing the version of the Boost libraries used by your project. Only upgrade at points in your project's life cycle where a bit of change will not cause problems. Individual bug fixes can always be obtained from the boost repository. (emphasis mine) OK, but *in practice* is there a large amount of work adapting existing client code to a new release? I'm asking in order to gauge whether it is useful for a linux distribution (Debian) to keep multiple versions of Boost available simultaneously; e.g. 1.34.1 and 1.35. Currently Debian provides only the latest version of Boost. Thanks, -Steve

The review of the Egg library by Shunsuke Sogame starts today.The library is concerned with the implementation and adaptation of function objects. As function objects are everywhere in Boost and C++, I hope to see plenty of discussion and votes during the review. Introduction: It is not so easy to define Function Objects especially if you want to support Boost.ResultOf and Boost.Lambda. Therefore, as Boost provides iterator_facade and iterator adaptors, Egg provides function_facade and function adaptors. Hi, I have found that Matlab uses Boost libraries and maybe headers also. It's surprising since people often compare their legacy Matlab code and new C++ boostified code. Boost is pleased to announce the availability of release 1.35.0. This is a major release that includes 12 new libraries, and coincides with an upgrade and reorganization of the www.boost.org web site. The new libraries are: * Asio: Portable networking, including sockets, timers, hostname resolution and socket iostreams, from Chris Kohlhoff. * Bimap: Boost.Bimap is a bidirectional maps library for C++. With Boost.Bimap you can create associative containers in which both types can be used as key, from Matias Capeletto. * Circular Buffer: STL compliant container also known as ring or cyclic buffer, from Jan Gaspar. * Function Types: Boost.FunctionTypes provides functionality to classify, decompose and synthesize function, function pointer, function reference and pointer to member types. Gzip filters with concatenated buffers

Hi everyone, I'm using gzip_decompressor in a manner similar to the example program found at the bottom of http://boost.org/doc/libs/1_35_0/libs/iostreams/doc/classes/gzip.html . It mostly works well, however there is a feature of the standard Unix gzip(1) program that it doesn't seem to emulate: gzip allows one to concatenate gzipped files together, and when one uncompresses the resulting file it will be identical to if the two uncompressed files had been concatenated. That is to say, one can do this: $ echo "abc" > a $ echo "def" > b $ gzip a $ gzip b $ cat a.gz b.gz > c.gz $ gunzip -c c.gz abc def $ However, using this Boost code: ifstream file("c.gz", ios_base::in | ios_base::binary); filtering_streambuf<input> in; in.push(gzip_decompressor()); in.push(file); boost::iostreams::copy(in, cout); Will result only in the first line, "abc" being output. Is there any easy way to emulate the behavior of gzip(1) in this regard? Any help is appreciated. David

If your vertices are stored in a vector, you're not going to be able to remove them in a single loop like this because you'll invalidate the underlying std::vector iterators you're using when you remove vertices. If you are using a list to store your vertices, this code should work as long as VertexNamesMap is populated with all of the vertices in your original graph. In previous versions, Boost Thread used to have a series of examples. I looked in the current release documentation but I can't seem to find them. Does anyone know where they are? [bimap] as relationship container

Firstly, I think the bimap library is great. What would suit my situation is to use a container type of relation that allowed storage of some information with each relationship. Effectively: map_of_relation< UserDefineValueType, KeyComp > (and related multimap, unordered_map, etc). As a usage example, in database terms, TableA references TableB. Attached to the TableA->TableB relationship, would be a bimap of rows in TableA that reference rows in TableB. So... typedef bimap< set_of<Rows:iterator>, set_of<Rows:iterator>, map_of< RelationshipDescription > > RowRelationships; typedef bimap< multiset_of<Table::Ptr>, multiset_of<Table::Ptr>, map_of_relation< shared_ptr<RowRelationships> > > TableRelationships; Is this easy to add with the current bimap architecture? Hi: I use boost with visual studio 2005 most of the time but ned to also use boost with c++ builde from rad studio 2007. Does the bjam system support this c++ builder version if so what would the command line be? Any help apreciated. Sean
