Hi, i'm a newbie on VC++2008 express and boost and I can't make my example program to work. Same linking prob of this thread with '1>LINK : fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'libboost_regex-vc90-mt-gd-1_35.lib' i've run bjam with the link=static argument and now I have the 'libboost_regex-vc90-mt-gd-1_35.lib' file in my stage\lib directory but the linking problem is always the same. anyhint ? Thanks, Bill. I can declare a mutex but it doesn't have the lock/unlock methods described in the documentation-- the only thing that's public is the constructor/destructor. Could I have botched my installation of boost somehow? I just got it out of synaptic, thinking that that would be the least error-prone way to go. Also, in the interest of all that "teach a man to fish" stuff so I can quit bothering you, is there a document somewhere that explains what a "concept" is in boost terms? (ie, is it a design specification for developers to work off of, or is it a pure virtual class actually described in a .hpp file somewhere?) Concepts are requirements a type must comply with to be used by a type or function. The Lockable concept is defined here http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_35_0/doc/html/thread/synchronization.html#t… .. The boost thread library provides types that implement these concepts and they may be substitued where a suitable concept is required. This is a form of polymorphism you may not be aware of. MPL Vector item limits

I've been searching thru the achive to try to get this to work, but haven't been able to get it to compile. I need a mpl::vector with up to 100 items. In the preprocessed headers there is a big comment that says // -- DO NOT modify by hand!. How can I regenerate these preprocessed headers with more possible items in the list. -Neal

Sorry if this is a dumb question-- it looks like just about every kind of lock/mutex I could declare in the documentation wants to be passed a Lockable object, but I can find no such thing in any of the header files. I have the Boost Thread library installed and am able to make and run threads, and I have all sorts of other lock and mutex stuff defined, it just does not seem to correspond to the documentation at all. Am I just horribly confused about what the documentation means? [smart_ptr] Sole ownership of shared_ptr?

Hi everyone, Over the past few days I have been trying to integrate Boost smart pointers into my system, which is basically a manager (ObjectManager) class which creates, destroys, and keeps track of instances of another class (Object). The manager keeps a std::map of instances of type shared_ptr. The manager has a createObject() method which returns a shared_ptr instance to the user, thus the user becomes an owner of the object, alongside the manager. My problem arises because I want objects to _always_ be destroyed when the manager method destroyObject() is called. I realise that part of the reason to use smart pointers is to prevent data from being deleted while a reference to it still exists, but I figure they are still worth using just for the safety aspect. My specific reasons for wanting the manager to be able to destroy the objects on command are: 1.) The manager may keep track of the objects, but the objects are used elsewhere in the system (until their destruction). 2.) I don't want to put the responsibility with the user (me!) to have to delete all references to the object in order for it to be deleted. Even if I pass back a weak_ptr, it is likely that the user will store a locked version of the pointer for convenience. 3.) I am using lua, which has no C-style "delete" command, and handles object deletion in its own time. Thus, even if all references to the object have been deleted in lua, the object may not actually be deleted straight away (unless you invoke deletion by calling collectgarbage(), which is a very messy solution). Anyway, I came up with a solution, but am not sure if there is any better or cleaner way. I am relatively new to smart pointers and the whole idea of virtual methods, so if I use the wrong terminology I apologise. Here goes: I have an abstract ObjectInterface class, which outlines all the methods that the user will access. I then have an Object class, which is of type ObjectInterface, and implements its abstract methods. The ObjectManager will, as before, create and store a map of shared_ptr references. However, instead of returning a shared_ptr to the user, the ObjectManager::createObject() method now creates a shared_ptr<ObjectHandle> which it returns to the user. ObjectManager doesn't store a reference to the handle, so the user is the sole owner of that. ObjectHandle (I'm not sure this is the correct use of the term "Handle"?) is also of type ObjectInterface, but in its constructor it takes a shared_ptr reference from the ObjectManager, which it stores internally as a weak_ptr (so that ObjectManager remains the sole owner of Object). It implements the ObjectInterface methods by forwarding calls from the user to the Object, but only if the weak_ptr hasn't expired. I am also storing a raw pointer to the Object in ObjectHandle, so that it doesn't have to call shared_ptr<>::lock() every time it needs to forward a call; I think this is reasonable to do since I never copy the pointer, and certainly won't delete it. Attached is a fully working example that I have tried to make as concise and clear as possible. Maybe my solution is the best one and my question seems stupid, or maybe there is a far simpler way and my solution seems stupid, but either way I am asking because I am unsure about this kind of thing in general. Serialization of multidimmensional arrays

Hello, We have just updated to 1.35 and it seems as if serialization of multidimensional arrays is broken. In 1.34_1, the following serialization code worked fine: int ints[2][2]; template<class Archive> void serialize(Archive & ar, const unsigned int version) { ar & BOOST_SERIALIZATION_NVP( ints ); } In 1.35_0, I receive the following error at compile time: oserializer.hpp:489: error: invalid static_cast from type ‘const int (*)[2]’ to type ‘const int*’ I have been able to get around this by looping through the outer dimension of the array and serializing all inner arrays separately, however this solution is less than ideal. If this is in fact an issue with the library, I am highly concerned. It seems to me that this issue should have been caught during regression testing. Thanks! Hi, That depends on your intention. The BSD style and MIT style licenses are permissive, attribution licenses. The Boost is also a permissive license. GPL and LGPL are constrained so that anyone using your code will have to make theirs open source (depending on how it is used, in the later case). If you are writing *for* Boost, the responsible thing to do is use the Boost license. If not, and you are looking for a permissive attribution license, then I suggest either the BSD or MIT style because they are commonly known. There are many other licenses, such as Apache, CDDL, etc. If you want to guarantee your code remains open source, then GPL or LGPL are a good choice (but many persons/companies will choose not to use your code if it falls under one of those licenses). I also managed to adapt this construct to provide comparison operators for comparisons with NULL values, so all my issues have been resolved. :) So now, apart from direct pointer assignments and delete statements (which I know need to be fixed anyway) my array iterator mostly behaves like a pointer. If you have access to the object files linked into this static library you should link them directly into every using project instead of the static library (as suggested in earlier post). MSVC 2005 and 2008 have a linker option that does this trick if the static library is part of the same solution: "Use Library Dependency Inputs" at the tab "Linker | General". (I searched the options several times until I recognized that this option could be relevant...)

[Conversion] numeric_cast from floating to integral types

Hi all, I just discovered (by debugging instead of reading :-() that a numeric_cast from a floating to an integral type always truncates by default, that is, 26.99999 is casted to 26. Is there a way to tell numeric_cast to use the nearest integer? Of course I can add 0.5 to my value and cast afterwards but that's definitely ugly. Thanks in advance. Best regards, Rainer

[asio] obtaining a socket descriptor from ip::tcp::socket

Hello, I would like to incorporate asio into my current project. However, I am restricted by a library that uses C-style socket descriptors to identify sockets, e.g. it contains functions similar to void foo(int fd, ...) Right now, I picture write an asio server that merely performs an asynchronous accept. Thereafter, the start() function in handle_accept() (see below) would invoke calls to the library such as foo(fd, ...) and spawn a dedicated thread per client that would gather data from the socket. void Server::handle_accept(const boost::system::error_code& e) { if (! e) { new_connection_->start(); new_connection_.reset(new Connection(...) //... In this example, asio would only be used to to handle the accept() and provide an outside interface to the rest of the application while the actual read()/write() calls are capsulated in the library. Is there a way to obtain a native socket descriptor from an ip::tcp::socket object? I am aware that mixing asio with C-style networking code totally breaks platform independence and it is generally a very ugly approach. On the other side, the C-style library would be capsulated behind one asio Server object, without interacting with the remaining application code. [iostreams] write function for sink

In iostreams I am creating a sink device and implementing the write function. In certain situations I do not want to write anything to the sink. In that case should I be passing back 0 as the streamsize or some other value ? BTW clicking on 'sink' in the individual classes list brings me to the page for 'device' not 'sink'.

Older Simpler Boost Library List

I see a current list of libraries at http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_35_0. On the old site, there was a nice table based grouping of libraries. I'm thinking it was easier to find something in the old table than on the new page. Is there a way to do a "re-serialization" of an object structure? Let's say I have a couple of objects, and I serialize them to "State A", then change a few things. Ideally, I'd like to just deserialize "State A" so that I get the objects back to that state, without boost::serialization creating new objects for me. Is it doable? Btw., I did consider somehow introducing one of the boost smart pointer types to resolve this issue, but apparently even the smart pointers cannot directly deal with NULL values (e.g. comparison to NULL requires calling the get() method first). I could of course introduce special functions for semantically equal purposes, but that would force me to change several thousand lines of code to match the new syntax. I can think of better ways to waste my time... Is it possible to construct metafunctions that allow a function argument of NULL, but not any other integer value? I was trying to make a small program that uses Multi-Index and Interprocess work on a Mac and was convinced that I was doing something wrong until I tried the simple example in the Multi-Index docs and found it also fails to work on Mac but works on Linux. I built the example, add a few books and then quit. When I restarted the app on Linux, it listed the books from the previous run but the Mac version did not manage to do the same. [extension] conflict with boost::optional

Hello, I have some trouble using boost::extension and boost::optional together in a project (MSVC 7.1). The compiler complains that boost::get is not an element of extensions::shared_library. Without the optional.hpp header everything works fine. It seems the for some reason the macro BOOST_EXTENSION_SHARED_LIBRARY_GET_FUNCTION isn't valid when shared_library.get<>() is called but I can't find out why. [python] Expose memory-aligned data types?

Using Boost.Python, is it possible to expose a C++ memory-aligned data type to Python? For example, I want to expose this data type. class __declspec(align(16)) foo { public: foo() {}; bool isAligned() { if ((int)this % 16 == 0) { return true; } else { return false; } } private: int a, b, c, d; }; I've written the following code to expose this class to Python: BOOST_PYTHON_MODULE(myModule) { boost::python::class_<foo>("foo", boost::python::init<>()) .def("isAligned", &bar.isAligned) ; } When compiling this code (MSVC 8.0, VS2005, Win32), I get the following error (entire error listed at the bottom): d:\...\boost\python\converter\as_to_python_function.hpp(21) : error C2719: 'unnamed-parameter': formal parameter with __declspec(align('16')) won't be aligned Note that I used to get a STATIC_ASSERTION_FAILURE in the type_with_alignment class definition when compiling with Boost 1.34. I found adding a 16-byte aligned struct type to the BOOST_TT_ALIGNMENT_BASE_TYPES list in type_with_alignment.hpp made the ASSERT go away, but introduced the above error. In an attempt to fix it, I downloaded Boost revision 43984 from early April, 2008, which included a patch that I thought would help me. See http://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/changeset/43984. While the type_with_alignment.hpp included in that revision did correct the STATIC_ASSERTION_FAILURE, I am still hitting the above error. Now, if I try to build the same code in x64 instead of Win32 (again, from revision 43984), I do not encounter the error. Not only does it compile, but I have verified that any objects 16-byte aligned objects I instanciate in Python are actually aligned correctly. Unsurprisingly, however, the x64 build produces the same error when I try to expose a 32-byte aligned data type. On the other hand, the Win32 build still complains if I try it with an 8-byte aligned data type. I'm hoping there is a piece of Boost.Python code missing from the class exposition that I don't know about. I've scoured the documentation and internet (and code) for such a thing, but I may have overlooked it. Hello list, I have created a generic iterator template class for arrays that also doubles as container-wrapper for the array in question. To achieve this I have based my class on boost::iterator_facade . I have defined all the neccessary functions as described in the documentation and mostly the iterators work as intended. There are two kinds of instructions though that my iterator class currently can't cope with: 1. Initializing a 'pointer' with NULL (in other words, I need a constructor with one argument of type int, but only in case that argument's value is 0) 2. Comparing a 'pointer' to NULL (again, comparison to int argument, but only makes sense for the value 0) I did add a constructor with only one argument (of type pointer to the underlying object's type) and could eliminate problem 1. However I feel it's not quite right, since for my array iterator it doesn't make any sense to initialize it with just one pointer and no further information (it requires pointer to first element, position, and size of array), so in cases where the pointer argument is not NULL this constructor shouldn't even be available! Here's the code for the new constructor: cArrayIterator(Value* _first) // workaround : first(_first),position(0) { if (NULL == _first) size = 0; else size = 1; // not really sensible, but the best I can think of atm } Moreover, I hoped this constructor would also eliminate problem 2 by implicitely converting the int value of 0 to a NULL iterator, but it didn't. I tried to provide my own comparison operators, but so far failed to meet the syntax the compiler would recognize as a fit for a comparison int to iterator. [iostreams] Obfuscator

Hi all, I'm trying to make filter to obfuscate some data so its not that obvious what it is. Problem is (I think) that in some cases, the obfuscator produces a null character as its output, and I'm not sure, but it seems that upon reading back the data, the null character is interpreted as EOF. At least, that is what I get from boost::iostreams::get(src) at the position where the null character was in the output. Can I somehow tell the stream that it is binary and not care about null characters? TIA /Rob

These are both in widespread use for open source, and impose no restrictions, aside from attribution, on the user. [BGL] implicit astar_search weirdness, bug in mutable_queue?

Hi there -- long-time reader, first-time poster! I've been trying to use astar_search from the graph library for a little problem I'm working on. Specifically, I wanted to use it to perform a search on an implicit graph (more specifically, an implicit tree), as touched on briefly in the docs for astar_search. In this case, I'm using boost 1.33.1 Unfortunately, this doesn't appear to be well supported "out of the box". Google didn't turn up much on the subject, except for a paper done by Kris Beevers and Jufeng Peng (www.cs.rpi.edu/~beevek/research/astar_bgl04.pdf) which mentions the need for a non-const version of the breadth-first search code in BGL, and a message to the list from Ian Downes, Feb 28th, asking about doing an implicit search as well (couldn't find any followups). Using Beevers paper as a template, I started bumping into some serious memory corruptions problems with my test-cases. Finally today I ran the tests under valgrind and managed to track it down to mutable_queue (boost/pending/mutable_queue.hpp), which is used by the astar_search code to manage the set of partial solutions. mutable_queue is constructed with a vector of integers, index_array, sized to the initial size of the implicit graph (1 vertex in my case). Unfortunately, this vector is never resized, so calls to mutable_queue::push wind up walking off the end of the index_array vector as the graph gets expanded (by my astar_visitor::examine_vertex callback), with various undefined (but generally bad) side-effects. So, after some mucking around, I've wound up with a solution to this where I specialize mutable_queue for my graph's vertex type, leaving astar_search and the standard mutable_queue definitions alone. The specialization is basically a copy of mutable_queue.hpp, with a change to the push method to ensure that index_array is sized correctly before indexing into it. Problem solved, everything working like a charm. Now, is this a bug in mutable_queue? Reading the two-paragraph description in mutable_queue.hpp, I'd guess this is how it is supposed to act. This would mean that implicit search with astar_search (and presumably any other search) isn't supported, because the queue that it uses for partial results can't get bigger as the graph itself grows. The documentation probably shouldn't mention implicit search if this is the case, or maybe there is need for a non-const version of astar_search that can use a more appropriate queue type... My solution, though it seems to work fine, is a bit of a bodge... As a side-note, I initially thought that the memory corruption that I was seeing was a result of vertex iterators becoming invalidated as the graph was expanded. I attempted a switch over to using listS for the VertexList parameter of the adjacency_list template (from vecS), but this causes all sorts of compiler errors under gcc 4.1.2. I tried making a similar change to the astar_search example program (astar-cities.cpp) and this too fails to compile (with 1.33.1 and 1.34.1). Shouldn't listS and vecS for the VertexList parameter be interchangeable? Cheers, Oliver

Installed library names

Hi, I'm working with a project whose build system passes -lboost_serialization as a flag to gcc. As far as I can tell from the configure options and from the Getting Started documentation, boost's installer only ever uses fully qualified names (libboost_serialization-gcc41-mt-1_35.so.1.35.0 on my system). Could the installer have possibly provided a libboost_serialization.so as well? Or did the authors of the project I'm trying to build probably manually create symlinks (or have their package manager create these) and assume that I would have the same? Thanks!

Mingw cross compilation

I have already compiled the linux version of the boost libraries and now I would like to compile a windows version of it. I'm using Fedora 8 with i386-mingw32 as my cross compiler (gcc 4.2.1). Hi, I've posted this to the users list as well, but it might have got lost as I replied on the original thread. Well, I still have problems with the conditions, even with the latest SVN. The problem seems to be that inside a block like: Lock lock (mutex); while (something.empty ()) cond.wait (mutex); I'm still getting into a state where something.empty () == false and yet I'm waiting on the condition. The only other access happens via: Lock lock (mutex); something.push (...); cond.notify_one (); So I don't get it how something can go wrong, unless the transition from mutex.unlock () to cond.wait () is not fully atomic and the following happens: Thread 1: while (something.empty ()) cond.wait (mutex); // starts, releaes lock but is not waiting yet Now comes Thread 2: Lock lock (); something.push cond.notify_one (); // Nobody waiting lock.release (); Thread 1 again: cond.wait (mutex); // starts waiting I had a similar problem with my own condition implementation on Windows, with exactly the same syndromes (I've been following the "Strategies for Implementing POSIX Condition Variables on Win32" http://www.cs.wustl.edu/~schmidt/win32-cv-1.html - only got it working properly with SignalObjectAndWait). Currently, it always leaves exactly *one* thread waiting, while previously, it left several threads waiting, so it has improved but there is still a problem. Any ideas? Hi, I would like to avoid fragmentation and perhaps reduce the time spent entering and leaving state in my state machine by leveraging the fast_pool_allocator. My very limited understanding of allocators comes from Scott Meyer's Effective STL and his references to articles on the Web. From reading the implementation of state_machine, I am not clear what the template-arguments for the UserAllocator should be if I wish to use the fast_pool_allocator as the UserAllocator parameter for state-machine. If I specified boost::fast_pool_allocator<int> does the library take care of somehow doing a rebind and allocating the right amount of memory for the states ? >From reading the changeset documentation (Point 2, Breaking Change of 14 August 2005) I see that " this considerably simplifies memory management customization. A user now only needs to pass his own allocator to state_machine<> and no longer has to separately overload operator new/delete for his state classes" Any guidance would be really appreciated ? [program_options] debug assertion with options_description

I just received a huge application that uses boost for just about everything. I am receiving a debug assertion when trying to add program descriptions. To help isolate the error I have built a very simple example and am still getting the crash. For reference I am using boost 1.32. When I moved to any of the newer versions of boost this specific error goes away but I rack up a list of compiler errors a mile long. I am trying to fix this issue without moving to a newer version of boost because this is a legacy application and we have a minimum amount of time/budget. The last compiled version delivered by the old contractor does not have this error. [regex] 1.35 missing lib on Windows?

I built 1.35 on Windows XP using MS Visual Studio .NET 2003 using bjam --toolset=msvc-7.1 install No errors in the build. Including <boost/regex.hpp> in a cpp file compiles OK using IDE but the link fails missing libboost_regex-vc71-mt-gd-1_35.lib and the lib is not present in the "install" lib directory. The project is being built with compiler option /MDd. Is this a Boost build failure or should I have specified something else to get the lib created or to use a different lib? Anyone know? Larry

[Python] Debug Python (PY_DEBUG) libs and auto-linking

Hi, Apologies for the long email, but I figured I might as well be detailed in my explanation. My two questions are below regarding the process of building Boost.Python against a PY_DEBUG debug build of Python, and the failure of auto-linking of such debug libs of Boost.Python (those with 'gyd' in the name). I'm using both the Release and Debug versions of Python 2.5.1 on Windows compiled with Visual Studio 2005. The Debug version of python produces python_d.exe and python25_d.dll, while the release version uses python.exe and python25.dll. I've downloaded and built Boost 1.35.0 with the following steps: 1. Edit Jamroot as follows: (lines I add start with a "+" ) <define>BOOST_ALL_NO_LIB=1 + <define>_SECURE_SCL=0 # Used to encode variant in target name. See the I do this since our codebase is compiled without the secure iterators for performance reasons. This isn't relevant to my question, but I might as well mention it. The Debug version of Boost Python I'm after is boost_python-vc80-mt-gyd-1_35.dll and the release is boost_python-vc80-mt-1_35.dll So, my first question is: Surely there must be an easier way to do what I tried to achieve above? Should building a true debug (ie, a traditional python debug lib with PY_DEBUG enabled) version of Boost Python really take this much hackery? This is where people point out to me just how little I know about bjam / boost build... Second problem is the auto linking of.Boost Python. If I create an DLL application in Visual Studio 2005, set the include directories, set the library directories, set the output target as BoostPythonTest.pyd in Release, and BoostPythonTest_d.pyd in Debug, I get the following situation. BoostPythonTest.cpp #include <boost/python.hpp> char const* greet() { return "hello, world"; } BOOST_PYTHON_MODULE(BoostPythonTest) { using namespace boost::python; def("greet", greet); } This auto-links boost_python-vc80-mt-1_35.dll in Release mode just as it should and everything works just fine. The Boost Python docs makes some reference to using BOOST_DEBUG_PYTHON to change the behavior of wrap_python.hpp but no such support seems to exist to modify the auto-linking behavior. [filesystem] problems cross-compiling for QNX from windows host

Hi, I have some strange errors when cross-compiling some of the boost libraries for QNX on a windows host: According to the Jamfile, the filesystem library includes boost system in the linking stage NOT as a library (via e.g. -lboost_system-mt-d) but as a (shared) object. This has the effect, that somehow the current path of the libboost_system-mt-d.so file (e.g. bin.v2\libs\system\build\qcc\ debug\target-os-qnx\threadapi-pthread\threading-multi) is inserted into the filesystem library. Naturally, after moving the libraries to the QNX target this path isn't valid any longer. The runtime the complains "Could not find library ...". If I rename libboost_system-mt-d.so to have the path mentioned above prepended (not as a path, but really the filename, containing the backslashes) everything works fine. As a first workaround I decided to remove boost_system from the linking of boost_filesystem in the Jamfile and specify -lboost_system-mt-d in the link of my executable. This works fine, but unfortunately only up to the first exception. The program now gets aborted during unwind of the exception. The question now is: could somebody please indicate, why the boost_system library is not linked via the -l switch, and what is wrong trying to do this. Another solution might be to convince the linker not to include the compile-time path of the .so file but I was not successful trying this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Guenther

[lambda] Lambda for member access

Hi, In the Boost.Lambda documentation, it has a section for operators that cannot be overloaded, but I'm not really sure if this means you cannot use these operators with lambda expressions. I have the following map: class SomeClass { public: void Foo() {} }; std::map<int, SomeClass> mymap; I want to be able to do std::for_each() on this map and use lambdas to call the Foo() member on each element in the map. For example: std::for_each( mymap.begin(), mymap.end(), _1.second.Foo() ); Obviously the above does not compile. Is there a way to make this work without doing some crazy template specialization? I would like to compile a static library and link my program against it, so that the example code works. Hiho, I'm using the new Boost Threads for a Thread Pool, however, I've got some weird problems. The documentation of Condition::notify_one says it unblocks one of the threads waiting currently on the condition -- what happens if I have several threads waiting and I call notify_one twice? It seems that on Windows/x64/VC9, only on thread wakes up if notify_one is called twice in a row. Is this right? Second, wait says: "The thread will unblock when notified by a call to this->notify_one() or this->notify_all(), or spuriously". Is it likely that a condition unblocks spuriously? After all, I'd expect to unblock only after calling notify_* and not "by accident". Is there any way to get diagnostic output when a wait has been called spuriously? The problem I'm having at the moment is: I have PIMPLed Boost.Thread behind some simple wrappers, and I'm using them like this here: Lock lock (mutex_); if (queue.empty ()) { waitForItem.wait (lock); } with Lock being a wrapper for scoped_lock, mutex being a wrapper for mutex and waitForItem being a condition, and funnily enough it goes waiting even though there is an item in queue (i.e., queue.empty () == false). I'm not sure where this is coming from (all access to queue is protected using mutexes), only candidate at the moment is that when inserting, I call notify_one, and if two items get inserted one right after the other, I assume that only one thread is woken up and hence the other remains waiting although there is an item in the queue. It works when I use notify_all (), but this does not smell right to me :/ Thanks, Anteru

Hi Giuseppe, I have looked at your code, and it appears that you are not adding a graph_name property map to the dynamic_properties object. Not all graphs have a graph_name property, so it is necessary to use the property map interface to retrieve the graph name. Hi everyone, I'm attempting to build a project that links against the Boost library, but I keep running into this error: /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.5.sdk/usr/include/c++/4.0.0/i686-apple- darwin9/bits/c++locale.h:72: error: 'snprintf' is not a member of 'std' This has come up before on this list ( http://lists.boost.org/boost-users/2008/02/34157.php ), but it doesn't seem like there was an answer. Mac Xcode 3.0 Boost compile issue

This is a specific error with Xcode 3.0 on Leopard not a generic Boost question: Something is screwy with the paths between Boost and Xcode: Xcode 3.0 needs to find the Boost includes, so I added my directory containing the top of the Boost tree (the boost_1_34_1 directory) to the User header Search paths in the build configuration for the target. No problem, everything appears to be found. However, adding that search path screws up something else: An error pops up in c++locale.h highlighting the line: const int __ret = std::snprintf(__out, __size, __fmt, __prec, __v); and claiming: "error: 'snprintf' is not a member of 'std'." What the freak? It compiles fine from the command line with g++ and using -I<same path to boost as above>. So it is some wierd interaction with Boost and Xcode paths but it make no sense to me. It's almost as if Boost is redefining something. But what? This does not occur if I don't add the Boost search paths but of course then the Boost definitions are not found. [Regex]Trouble building library for WM5 using Visual C++ 8 - boost release 1.35

Let me say up front that my goal is to build the regex lib with Visual C++ 8.0 using nmake and the supplied makefiles with as little modification to the boost sources as possible. In fact, I would like to limit customization for Windows Mobile 5 entirely to adding #define's to boost/config/user.hpp. Is this possible? It would certainly minimize the amount of work when upgrading boost. In order to minimize the number of files to keep under source control, I've moved only the regex-relevant files from the full zip extraction to the source control directories. I tested this by copying files from the 1.35 boost distribution until I had a clean XP desktop VC8 build. However, the output below shows where the WM5 build fails right out of the gate. There seems to be an stdlib issue with a missing 'strxfrm'. Hi, I am implementing a fsm for a kind of a project class, which tracks certain changes like adding special files or starting a computation. To keep the interface as small/clean as possible all interactions with the fsm should be soley processed by the process_event method. But seemingl I have to declare transition actions public in an outer state to make them available for inner state reactions/transitions. Is there any nice way to avoid this and to keep transition actions separated from the public interface? (Declaring *all* inner states which need access to be friend seems too ugly to me...) Building Boost as Universal Binary on Mac OS X

I would like to build 1.35.0 Boost libs (especially date_time, filesystem, regex, system, and thread) on my G5 as Universal Binaries with bjam 3.1.16, so I can use them in a project with Xcode on both my G5 and my Intel-based MacBook Pro. (I was surprised they did not build that way by default). The command I used was: $> bjam --toolset=darwin --build-type=complete --with-thread --with- date_time --with-filesystem --with-regex --with-system I know they're just built PPC because I used the `file` command, e.g.: $> file libboost_system-mt-d-1_35.dylib libboost_system-mt-d-1_35.dylib: Mach-O dynamically linked shared library ppc Can anyone help? [MPI] compilation error with msvc 64bit due to size_t datatype

Hello, I cannot compile boost.mpi with msvc 8.0 64bit. The complete error message is attached. The reason is that is_mpi_datatype<std::size_t> derives from mpl::true_ with the 32 bit compiler while it derives from mpl::false_ with the 64bit compiler. Unhandled exception using directory_iterator

empty a thread_group

Hello I m using a boost::thread_group instance to handle a limited number of threads. When the thread_group reach a defined size, I cal join_all() on it and I wonder how I could clear it without having to keep a pointer to its threads and call remove_thread() for each one. I thought about destruct th thread_group instance but I m not sure it's a good idea, so any advice is welcome. Regards Axel

I am writing a packet base class that can be serialized. Problem building serialization with gcc mingw 3.4.5

Dear mailing list, I am having some trouble building Boost 1.35.0, using gcc mingw 3.4.5. When building the serialization library, I get the following error message on many of the files: "wide char i/o not supported on this platform" The bjam command line I used is: bjam --build-dir="C:\boost_1_35_0\built" --toolset=gcc --with-serialization I've looked through some of the Boost configuration header files, and it seems that the BOOST_NO_STD_WSTREAMBUF value is not being #defined. (I was under the impression that gcc mingw 3.4.5 supports wide character i/o, is this correct?) Has anyone else had this problem, and is there a solution to getting serialization to build properly using my gcc compiler? Thanks very much, Markus.

[serialization] 1.35 problem with explicit instantiation

With 1.34, I was using the pattern described by Robert (http://lists.boost.org/boost-users/2006/01/16293.php) with non-intrusive serialization. In short, the serialization functions are merely declared in the header files. They are implemented in the .cpp file, and then explicitly instantiated for each archive type I'm using. However, with 1.35, this no longer works. The export macros create an instance of the guid initializer as follows: export.hpp:150 BOOST_PP_CAT(boost_serialization_guid_initializer_, __LINE__) However, this gives me redefinition errors in the following situaion: ClassA.h -------- (line 1:) BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT(ClassA); ClassB.h -------- (line 1: )BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT(ClassB); main.cpp #include <ClassA.h> #include <ClassB.h> (create an archive instance and attempt to serialize) ------------------------------- As you can see, two objects, both named boost_serialization_guid_initializer_1, will be created, and the compiler (MSVC80) will give me a redefinition error. I honestly have no idea what's going on. This is so obvious, it has to mean that I'm organizing my code in some weird fashion. Thanks! Dan

[Boost.Test] reports incorrect memory leak

An extremely simple piece test, containing just one stack-created object, is causing boost.test to report a memory leak. I am using boost 1.34.1 compiled in windows using configure, bjam, & msvc90. I've copied my simple test case illustrating my problem below, and included the output it produces. As you can see, boost.test is being used, but the regex is part of microsoft's tr1. As a note, when I modify it to use boost's regex (with the commented-out changes seen in code), no such errors were reported. I'd like to say that obviously the SOLE problem lies in MS' beta tr1 implementation, but this code is so simple I don't get how that would be. Also, i believe the actual TR1 impl is from dinkumware and is supposed to be fully release ready (it is just the ms-CLI, etc, integration which leads to the beta designation)... Hopefully someone has more insight into this. Also, if someone has any tips on how to interpret the memory dump boost.test provides, I'd be interested in learning. bind with boost::filesystem::directory_iterator

Hi guys and gals, I'm new to boost and this is my first attempt to use bind (big step LOL). I'm trying to do this: bfs::path p( "." ); bfs::directory_iterator dir_iter( p ); for_each( dir_iter.begin(), dir_iter.end(), boost::bind( &purgeOlder, _1 ) ) but I get: purgefiles.cpp:53: error: 'class boost::filesystem::directory_iterator' has no member named 'begin' purgefiles.cpp:53: error: 'class boost::filesystem::directory_iterator' has no member named 'end' It would appear directory_iterator does not have these members which are common on the other containers, am I missing something? Hello, I'm trying to pass a distance_map PropertyMap into a depth_first_search call. I've done so without any problems for BFS and Dijkstra's, however I just cannot get DFS to update the distance_map. Hi All The Egg review has run for 2 weeks now with zero reviews, which is obviously disappointing. There has been some good and pretty thorough discussion, and a couple of promises of reviews. As such, I'm extending the review period by 1 week until 20th April 2008. Please do post a review if you have any interest in this library. In case anybody is unsure, in the case of zero votes being posted, the default result will be a rejection. Please lets make sure we don't have to fall through to this default case. [Random] Differing values from minstd_rand in v1.35.0

Dear all, After moving from boost 1.34.1 to 1.35.0 I have noticed that the sequence of values returned by the minstd_rand generator has changed. In the event it matters, I'm using g++ v4.1.3 on an Ubuntu Linux system. Is this user error, the result of a bug fix in Boost.Random, a new bug in Boost.Random, or is my expectation that the output of the RNG should not change across releases unreasonable? boost.interprocess dynamic segment size?

Hello, in my application I am forced to create a shared memory segment whose size can change at runtime. Is it possible to implement such a shared memory segment using the boost.interprocess library? I do not want to pre-allocate a big shared memory segment, as in most cases the segment is small (about 100bytes). Just in some very rare cases it gets very big (5MB or even more). Thank you

Hide the predicate type of a filter_iterator?

Hello everyone Imagine a class "numbers" that contains some values and methods like getEvenValues(), getOddValues(), getValuesLarger100() etc. Those methods return an iterator range of filter_iterators. In the the code I posted below, I'd have to define a different iterator_range of filter_iterator types for all the different methods (numbers::EvenFilterRange, numbers::OddFilterRange etc.). Is there some way to "hide" the type of the predicate used in a filter_iterator, so that it would be possible to have a generic "NumberRange" type for the return values of all methods? Best way to share data in an object between two threads?

WinXP, Visual Studio 2003 I have a dialog based application which consists of the main thread and a data collection thread. The main thread updates a graph from data read by the data collection thread. I want to use an object, which is of type MyData to share the data between the threads. So , basically the data collection thread which collects data from a piece of hardware and places it in the MyData object, then the main thread reads from the MyData object and updates the graph. After reading a bit on shared memory, managed mapped memory etc. in Boost, I am a bit confused on how to do this. What is the best boost classes to use for this? Will I also need a sync object to synchronize the threads? Thanks, Ed

[Graph] distance_map Property not working for DFS?

Hello, I just started using the Boost graph library a few days ago, so I am pretty new to all of this. What I'm trying to do is to record the path distance between a given source and target vertex using a variety of algorithms. So far, I've gotten BFS and Dijkstra's working correctly, however I'm having some trouble having distance information recorded in my distance_map Property when attempting to do this with DFS. For instance, this is what I wrote for Dijkstra's: dijkstra_shortest_paths(G, s, distance_map(&d[0]).visitor(*(new DijkstraVisitor(s, t)))); where G is a Graph, s is the start Vertex, d is defined as an integer vector and DijkstraVisitor is a class I have defined that is used as the visitor for the algorithm. Similarly, for DFS I have: depth_first_search(G, visitor(*(new DFSVisitor(s, t))).distance_map(&d[0]).root_vertex(s)); Unfortunately, when I try reading the d vector, all the values are zero and seem to have never been updated. My question is: what am I doing wrong and what can I do to record the distance correctly? Another somewhat related problem I have is that the algorithms seem to take VERY long to complete when larger graphs are processed. For instance, a graph with 100 vertices and 10,000 edges (mesh topology) takes about 10 minutes to complete the shortest path problem between two given vertices. Is this normal? I want to use spirit parsing some text file. The very basic element in those files is string, float and int.
