How to load a Boost ublas matrix of size more than 50000 x 500?

Hi all, I am unable to initialize a matrix of size 50000 x 500 using ublas::matrix<float>. I think it is giving error because no contiguous memory is available to create. But is there a way to create a non-contiguous matrix ? Thanks, Ajay G.

The "C++ Template Programming" book mentions an mpl::print metafunction in order to generate a warning diagnostic message. The Boost online documentation appears to be missing any message of this metafunction. Is this an error in the book or an error in the documentation ? I'm trying to get the regex library (Boost ver. 1.34.1) working under Visual Studio 7.0 and the Windows Mobile 6 SDK, and have run into the following problems: 1. Need to modify visualc.hpp to define BOOST_NO_STD_LOCALE and BOOST_NO_SWPRINTF. 2. Hi! If I use BOOST_AUTO_TEST_CASE_EXPECTED_FAILURES I would expect it to be an error when I have less as well as too many errors in the marked testcases. Understanding MPL and using '::type'

I am making another effort to understand MPL. I have the book by David Abrahams and Aleksey Gurtovoy, "C++ Template Programming", which is my basic source for learning the library, and I have the Boost documentation for the MPL. After reading chapter 3 again I think I understand the basic concepts more easily. However I am still missing something basic, which I think can be given the name: "How do I understand when to append and when not to append the '::type' to a metaprogramming … [View More]construct built with MPL". Let me first say that I fully understand that '::type' is the way that the MPL returns compile time data in its metafunctions. Also that I understand that '::type' may refer to compile time numeric data ( including bool ) in the eventual form of '::type::value' and that '::value' is often supplied as a shorthand for compile time numeric data. Finally I do understand that to pass metafunctions around when a type is needed the MPL uses a metafunction class, which is a type and not a template. What I am missing is how to determine when using MPL functionality, whether it be data types, sequences, iterators, algorithms, or views being manipulated, when to append '::type' to the end of the intermediary expression or not. Let me give some examples of my confusion based on my reading in the MPL book listed above. I am reading about algorithms and I see an example whose logic I perfectly understand, and whose syntax goes like this: template<class Seq> struct biggest_float_as_double : mpl::deref < typename mpl::max_element < typename mpl::replace < Seq, float, double >::type, mpl::less < mpl::sizeof_<_1>, mpl::sizeof_<_2> > >::type > {}; In two cases in the nested construct above one uses the 'typename xxx<...>::type' construct whereas in one case one does not. There seems to be some logic or rule about this but I do not understand what it is. A few pages later in the text I see: typedef mpl::vector < mpl::vector_c<int, 1, 2, 3>, mpl::vector_c<int, 4, 5, 6>, mpl::vector_c<int, 7, 8, 9> > S; typedef mpl::transform < S, mpl::front<_>, mpl::inserter < mpl::int_<0>, mpl::plus<_,_> > > ::type sum; Here we have another nested mpl construct and I do understand the logic of it, but here there are no internal nested '::type' statements. Once again I am utterly puzzled about the whys and wherefores of using or not using '::type'. Finally I turn the page and I see this MPL construct: template<class Seq> struct reverse : mpl::fold < Seq, typename mpl::clear<Seq>::type, mpl::push_front<_,_> > {}; Once again I can follow the logic and the explanation of mpl::fold, but I have no idea by what rule one of the nested constructs has '::type' appended and the next one does not. As a naive learner of the MPL I would have thought it would have been much easier to use if every MPL construct ( mpl::xxx... ) returned a '::type', and then this business of when to use and when not to use '::type' would have been regularized, but evidently MPL does not work that way. Building boost 1.35.0 using mingw-gcc-4.2.1 with shared runtime

Hi, by default, the shared boost libraries 1.35.0 compiled with mingw gcc 4.2.1 link with the static C/C++ runtime, which means that exceptions cannot be thrown across dll boundaries. Hello *, iterating through a directory (let's say in Windows c:\) with system files, to which only OS has access (like hiberfil.sys) causes the directory iterator to throw an exception. This is all fine, but how can I know what was the error? status function of the particular directory enty returns regular_file as file_status and system_error_type is 0. [iostreams] zlib name clashes

I have an application where I need the zlib iostreams filter, however, the zlib part of the application is compiled with Z_PREFIX (which prepends all zlib functions with z_ via defines). Since Z_PREFIX prepends via defines, the zlib_base functions that are named the same as their zlib counterpart are "renamed" so the compiler cannot find the functions z_* in zlib_base. My suggestion is to rename the zlib_base functions so that they won't be redefined if Z_PREFIX is defines. /R

The statement BOOST_CONCEPT_ASSERT((boost::Integer<T>)); triggers an error if T is the type char. It does not trigger an error if T is either of type signed char or unsigned char. I can understand why it's not so easy to detect for SignedInteger or UnsignedInteger given type char, but to my understanding using type char should work with the above statement. Peter

I installed the GNU's binaries for Windows, but unfortunately, I only had problems with them. The library is still header-only. When using boost::filesystem's paths, of course, you add a dependency to the filesystem lib. The Read Interface ------------------------ Reading an image can be done in multiple ways depending on what your need is. Like the old io lib there are 4 different ways of reading images. As there are: * read_image: Read image, the right amount of memory will be allocated beforehand. The supplied image type needs to be compatible with actual image file. * read_view: Read image, the image's memory must be already allocated. The supplied image type needs to be compatible with actual image file. * read_and_convert_image: Same as read_image, but the user can specify an color converter. * read_and_convert_view: Same as read_view, but the user can specify an color converter. There is a new function for reading image information. Since every image format has it's own set of tags, the library defines seperate image_read_info<format_tag> structures. Please see, for instance, the jpeg_tags.hpp header. As for the function parameters the following sections in the same order. 1. String for file name ( std::string, std::wstring, char*, boost::filesystem::path ) OR devices ( FILE*, TIFF*, std::ifstream ) 2. Image or view type 3. Optional: Subimage definition ( top_left corner + dimensions ) 4. Optional: Color converter. This parameter is only valid for converting functions. The default parameter is gil's default_color_converter 5. Format Tag. Reading the image information only takes parameter 1 and 5. Most noteably is TIFF, since it can support almost everything. This makes it very hard not to have code explosion during compilation. Here is a list of list of supported formats: TIFF: * Number of samples: 1, 3, 4 ( eg. RGB would be 3 ) * Bits per sample: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 * planar and interleaved images * indexed images. Indices can be of 1, 2, 4, 8, or 16 bit depth, whereas the palette must a rgb16_image_t. PNG: * gray, gray_alpha, rgb, rgba * bit_depth can be 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 JPEG: * gray, rgb, cmyk, ycck ( will be read as cymk ) Please note, that I'm still in process of testing all these different formats. The primary goal of this new version is to eventually replace the old io library which is part of boost's distribution. Do I need to apply for a review? I'm not sure how to go from here. I know there is still some work to do before a possible review. Documentation is lacking and support for dynamic image needs to be added. I'm wondering how to use the numeric_conversion library to perform rounding based on types. Assume I have a double value of 3.7. If I convert it to integer, the result should be 4. If I convert it to float, the result should be 3.7. Based on the information you provided, I guessed that moving from hashed indices (where the hash function is relatively expensive) to sorted_non_unique (with a cheap comparison function) would improve things; and indeed that change has got the load hugely quicker. I then tried the 'poor man serialization' example that you attached. As you suspected, the performance effect of this was pretty small and so I guess it is indeed step 1 that is causing the issue (I have several ordered_non_uniques). I do like the memory mapped file idea, but as you say, the impact on the code is large; I think too large for the time being, though it may be sometime I come back to if needs be in the future. I think, for the time being at least, the performance is ok now (using ordered rather than hashed indices). I have searched the archives, and I've seen threads that are clearly related to what I'm doing, but their approaches were a bit different than mine (ie. some had the option of including concrete classes directly). General Info: I'm using boost 1.35.0. My target platform is Windows XP. I'm building with MSVC8 SP1. What I Need: … [View More]I'm building an interface-driven library (all the exposed classes are pure abstract interfaces). This library resides in its own DLL, but we can assume that it is always loaded when we're serializing data. The concrete classes in this library (not exposed) implement boost serialization support. External applications should be able to link against boost, create archives, and use them to serialize my library's objects through my library's interface pointers. What I Tried: I've attached an MSVC8 solution with a sample executable and dll. The library exposes an interface, hides a concrete implementation of the interface, and exposes a factory function for retrieving an instance. The application retrieves an instance of the class, instantiates a polymorphic binary archiver, and serializes the object through the interface pointer using the archiver. What Goes Wrong: In the release configuration, the test program appears to work. In the debug configuration, the app fails an assert (extended_type_info.cpp:74 lookup(eti) == m_self->m_map.end()). This seems to be the multiple-registration issue which has been discussed in earlier threads. Why doesn't the assertion fail in release? My Workaround: I've seen it mentioned in earlier threads that I should move the actual serialization calls into the DLL. To that end, I created a MyLibrarySerializer class which simply forwards the serialization call. This seems to work, but since I just started using this library, I can't tell if I've overlooked a better solution or if I'm introducing some obscure bugs using this method. Questions: Will my solution work the way I expect it to (Am I overlooking any major pitfalls)? Am I overlooking a better solution (Is there a way to accomplish this without introducing the MyLibrarySerializer class)? Why does my original solution appear to work in the release configuration? It describes error_condition as a "portable abstraction" compared to error_code, what makes an error_condition more portable or more of an abstraction than error_code completely escapes me. I'm using vs2008 and the way I have my project set up is that there is a common framework which I build into a static library, and this framework uses boost signals which I've built into a static library as well. The thing is that when I compile the test project that uses the framework, it tries to link with the dynamic signals library. My framework lib also doesnt try and link with the static lib of signals. hello, i am writing BLAS L3 code that i wish to be optimal on 3 CPU kinds (Intel core2, AMD k8/k10, SPARCIV+/T1/T2). [MultiIndex] re-indexing on load

Hi, Loading a multi_index_container from an archive seems to be involving a re-index of that archive. I'm setting breakpoints on my key extract functions, and they're getting called when i load the container from the archive. I would have thought that the serialization would mimic the copy constructor in this respect, and not do any re-indexing? This is causing me significant performance problems at the moment. [filesystem] basic_path question

Hi, I create the following object: boost::filesystem::path mypath( "SomeFolder/OnWindows/SubFolder" ); In Microsoft Windows, the standard slash direction is "\", so when I run the above in the debugger, I notice m_path is still using forward slashes ("/"). I would have expected the slashes to be normalized. Am I misunderstanding something? How can I construct a path object like above and have it normalize the slashes? Thanks.
