[multi_array] how to use iterators ?

Hello everybody, i'm trying to use boost::multi_array objects with functions of the <algorithm> stl lib. That's why i need to use the iterators of the multi_arrays. But i don't understand the doc about them, and i can't find any example of source code that use them. Could anyone here show me an example of use, or explain me a little bit how they work? Boost interprocess map in shared memory

Hallo, I have problem when using interprocess package from boost lib. I would like to have map object in memory. I created example files for creating and reading this object from shared memory. http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_35_0/doc/html/interprocess/quick_guide.html… It is working ok. Now, I want to have library, where i want to find previously created shared segment and read it more-times. But I do not want to open it on every runQ function call. I need to open this segment only once and use it more-times when runQ in lib is called. [Boost.Asio] Udp::Socket->send_to

Hi, In using the Boost.Asio library, the Udp::Socket->send_to() function throws an error if the endpoint is unreachable. I thought in udp datagrams its a send and forget mentality. The send_to function would send the message even if the endpoint was unreachable. Is there a setting I need to use for this to work? Ryan

I have a career where my resources are spread thinly among a wide range of things, & it's much more expensive for me to design quickly for 90% success + then refactor 1-2yrs later when absolutely necessary, than it is to spend the extra effort up front to design for 99% success, understand where the 1% failure lies, and move on to other things knowing I'm far less likely to have to revisit. Especially when 90% success rates have a tendency to be overestimated as there are customers who forget to mention certain design requirements ;)

[xpressive] first try: error handling, nested refs

Problems using pre-compiled boost libraries with Visual Studio 2005

I downloaded the current pre-built boost library files, but am having some difficulty with them. I am building a VC8.0 (Visual Studio 2005) application that is making use of boost::program_options and boost::filesystem. My application links fine, but when I try to execute the program, I get an error message about a missing "MSVCP80D.dll" (or "MSVCP80.dll" when building for release). I don't have those .dlls on my machine. I tried reinstalling Visual Studio, but that did not work. I found the needed .dll files online and downloaded them. After installing the .dll files, I got another error about another missing .dll which I also downloaded. Next error message received is "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Review the manifest file for possible errors. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem. For more details, please see the application event log." A couple of other notes: The application I am trying to build was previously successfully built by a couple of other engineers here (I think using 1.33.x and/or 1.34.x). I am trying to replicate their work using the current libraries. One of the guys does not work here and the other got a new PC and somehow lost his ability to build the project.

This doesn't mean you can't design thin wrappers yourself for your experiment. Honest advise though - do not use ACE, even if you find it faster, which I very much doubt. Boost is a set of modern C++ libraries, pushing its way into standard C++, and developed by world experts; while ACE is dated, ugly, monolithic monster that forces you into wrong design choices. shared memory overhead

I have a bunch of data I am trying to store in shared memory which is basically a vector of bytes + a vector of some metadata; both vectors, in general, grow as time goes on at an unpredictable rate, until someone stops using them. The vector lengths are extremely variable; total amount of shared memory could be as small as 10K and as large as several hundred megabytes. I will not know beforehand the amount needed. >From what I understand about Boost shared memory segments, they are not infinitely growable, so I think I have to organize my data into chunks of a more reasonable size, and allocate a series of separate shared memory segments with a few chunks in each. (there are other application-specific reasons for me to do this anyway) So I am trying to figure out what is a reasonable size is of shared memory to allocate. (probably in the 64K - 1MB range but I'm not sure) Does anyone have any information about the overhead of a shared memory segment? Just an order of magnitude estimate, e.g. M bytes fixed + N bytes per object allocated + total size of names. Are M,N on the order of 10 bytes or 10Kbytes or what?

Need help configuring a toolset for building Boost

I've manage to build Boost (1_35_0) on my windows/cygwin machine using gcc (version 3.4.4) and it builds the threads dll such that I'm able to compile and run an application on windows that tests the threads. Now I'd like to be able to build using a cross-compiler (arm-xscale-linux-gnu-gcc version 4.1.0) but I'm not sure how to get it to recognize the tools. I was able to build for windows/cygwin with the following command: > bjam --build-dir=tmp/build-boost --toolset=gcc threading=multi > target-os=cygwin threadapi=pthread stage Changing 'gcc' to 'arm-xscale-linux-gnu-gcc' and 'cygwin' to 'linux' didn't work. Errors building boost 1.35.0 under mingw (serialization related)

Hello, this is my firs try to build boost under windows vista using mingw-3.4.5, so I'm totally newbie, and I'm getting several compiling errors. It seems this didn't completely work since the previous error disappeared, but I got a new one and I haven't been able to find a possible solution. I tried changing Configuration Properties->Linker->Manifest File->Generate Manifest setting to No. When executing the program, I get the following error message. Debug Error! Program: ... R6034 An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library without using a manifest. This is an unsupported way to load Visual C++ DLLs. You need to modify your application to build with a manifest. For more information, see the "Visual C++ Libraries as Shared Side-by-Side Assemblies" topic in the product documentation.

filesystem headers

Hi, I found the filesystem headers to be very confusion, the grouping of classes and functions into headers seems to have been chosen arbitrary. basic_recursive_directory_iterator in convenience.hpp? basic_directory_iterator in operations.hpp? shouldn't they use headers of their own, or at least use filesystem/iterator.hpp ? create_directories is in convenience.hpp, but create_directory in operations.hpp? the free function extension(path) is in convenience.hpp, although I think most users would expect it to be a member of the basic_path class instead. a rather highlevel (IMO) function copy_file is in operations.hpp, while others like change_extension is in convenience.hpp. what should I expect to find in convenience.hpp that is not in operations.hpp? basic_filesystem_error, which is an std::exception derived class is in path.hpp, shouldn't it go into exceptions.hpp? maybe someone could shed some light on how I should understand the api in order to include the correct header.. More about path.hpp.. I think the use of iterator_facade in path.hpp is unfair to users, since it pulls in so much of complicated headers (have a look at iterator_facade.hpp) only to ease the task of implementing that path::iterator. I think that iterator_facade is a great tool for users that quickly wants to design a working iterator, but in a header such as filesystem::path that -should- be used everywhere where a file reference is needed, it should be rather lightweight (instead we use std::string, because it compiles with reasonable speed. I think we are not alone on this choice). The inclusion of iosfwd only for stream operators is again not what I would prefer, better off putting that stuff in path_io.hpp is type_traits/is_same.hpp, throw_exception.hpp, static_assert.hpp used in path.hpp at all? Sorry for all the complains, I wouldn't write them unless I really, really wanted to use boost::filesystem. Finally there's a better way to do file and path operations in c++, but it's not practical in its current form. I've been trying with no success incorporating filesystem more in our very large code base, but compilation times and confusion about headers have made me redraw most of that code. [Serialization] Serialization of a class in a DLL

Hi everybody, I have just tried a simple example of a class serialization in a DLL and did not manage to make it work. I have been using Boost serialization since a while but until now I was putting all the serialization code in the .hpp. By the way thanks Robert (and Boost) for this great library. I am using MSVC 8.0 and Boost 1.34.1. I have tried the same with Boost Serialization 1.36 (head of Boost) without any success. My test is the following. I have read the doc ('Exporting Class Serialization') and have seen in the logs that a lot have changed regarding export since 1.34.1. In what I have understood, the fix was concerning cases where the macro BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT() is used in the .hpp, leading to multiple registrations, and not in the .cpp as I am doing. Am I right? By the way, I have noticed a little typo in the doc concerning void_cast_register. Here is what I learned for Linux. In Linux, a thread is the same as process. For redhat, the default stack size for a process is 10240k. this can be checked and changed by "ulimit " command. Setting different stack size will affect how many threads can be created for Linux.

ASIO question

Hi, I am thinking how to use ASIO for my specific situation. Well, I'll try to explain: I have a client that is connected to multiple remote daemons. Now the client can initiate alternating "start" and "stop" messages to it's daemons like this: * send a "start" message to all daemons * send a "stop" message to all the daemons * send a "start" message to all the daemons * send a "stop" message to all daemons etc I want to be able to have multiple threads sending a "start" or a "stop" to all connected daemons using boost::asio::async_write(). But this has to be in phases, so all threads handling a "start" should finish first before a "stop" can be initiated. I was wondering if this is solvable using ASIO and if so, hopefully somebody can point me in the right direction. The following code compiles fine with boost 1.34.1 (as it should) but fails to compile with 1.35.0 and the boost trunk (rev. 45896) #include "boost/archive/binary_iarchive.hpp" namespace detail { struct fu {}; } struct bar : detail::fu {}; Visual studio 2005 generates the following error message: 1>c:\dev\sandbox\using_scope_test\using_scope_test\test.cpp(7) : error C2872: 'detail' : ambiguous symbol 1> could be 'detail' 1> or 'boost::detail' It seems to me that the include file is some how leaking the boost namespace to it's surrounding? Explicitly qualifying the line: struct bar : ::detail::fu {}; works as expected. But I'm also allowed to write: struct bar : boost::detail::fu {}; which gives the error "'fu' : is not a member of 'boost::detail'" and not the expected "'boost' : is not a class or namespace name". I'd like to write a class in C++, then use a tool like SWIG (or Boost.Python, if absolutely necessary) to make a shared library/Python module. Then, I want to write python code that uses the boost.mpi python module to pass messages containing instances of my C++ class. In other words, I want to do what's described here: "Boost.MPI also supports efficient serialization and transmission of C++ objects (that have been exposed to Python) through its C++ interface. Any C++ type that provides (de-)serialization routines that meet the requirements of the Boost.Serialization library is eligible for this optimization, but the type must be registered in advance. To register a C++ type, invoke the C++ function register_serialized. If your C++ types come from other Python modules (they probably will!), those modules will need to link against the boost_mpi and boost_mpi_python libraries as described in the installation section. Note that you do not need to link against the Boost.MPI Python extension module." Hello, I have the following questions, I have breifly scoured the archive but haven't quite found what I want, so if this already been covered please point me in the direction. desc.add_options() ("port", po::value<string>(), "port to connect to"); I have looked at modifiers for value_semantic, one_token() multi_token() is there such a concept as required ? such that for e.g. desc.add_options() ("port", po::value<string>()->required(), "port to connect to"); causes the parser to 'die' if the value port isn't defined ? currently I am using vm.count("port") to deduce whether it has been defined. My other question is, why does the type have to be specified when extracting something from the variable map ? for e.g. vm["port"].as<string>() ... when it has already been defined in the configurations options. I ask this because I have a function that I am using: bool check_key(po::variables_map &vm, string key, bool required, bool print) { if (required && !(vm.count(key))) { cerr << "fatal: " << key << " not defined." << endl; exit(1); } if (print && vm.count(key)) { cout << key << ": " << vm[key].as<string>() << endl; } } This incidentally solves my first problem of having a key(option) defined or failing if it does not exist in the variable map, but ... say if I have a option defined as po::value<int>() inside option_description then my my function fails ... as it tries to interpret it as a string ? Background: I am/was planning to profile the thread libraries from boost and ACE. During this experiment, I wish we had an interface class defined for threads. Also, I wish boost and ACE had implemented those interface classes. It would have helped someone like me profile different C++ libraries with ease. I was going through the header files of boost and I don't see a interface classes being used. I am trying to understand was there a conscientious decision made to not define them. multi_array vs vector vs map vs native arrays

Hello, I have an algorithm that interpolates a value out of tabulated data. Performance tests show that using double algo( const double* data [2], int datasize, double x) is faster than double algo( const std::vector<double>&, const std::vector<double>&, double x) and double algo( const boost::multi_array<double, 2>&, double x) by 30% or so. So I chose the first one. However, I have a requirement to add points to the tabulated data dynamically. For this, the best container would have been std::map<double, double> with which insertion is part of map's interface. However, the algorithm requires _random_ iterators to the container to proceed, so map doesn't workout but vector and multi_array do. What would be the best compromise? Regards,

How to override the init() in the xml serialization library..

Hi, I have a need to be able to specify my own init routine for the xml serialization. I tried deriving a new archive from xml_oarchive_impl and tried to have a init() function there but that does not get invoked. I am using boost serialization library ver 1.32. The xml that is generated by the library is malformed. It generates the following line without corresponding end tag <boost_serialization signature="serialization::archive" version="3"> There is no </boost_serialization> in the o/p xml. Autolink woes with Boost.Python, Visual C++ 2005

Hello, I'm trying to statically link to Boost.Python from the Boost-consulting binary distribution. No matter what I try I'm either getting the furiously annoying error message "mixing dll with a static runtime is a bad idea", or in the other situations I'm being told that boost_python-vc80-mt-1_35.lib can't be found, which is not what I want to link with in the first place hence I didn't install DLL versions of boost. All I want to do is statically link to boost.python. Is there some voodoo I could perform? If I define BOOST_PYTHON_NO_LIB and try to link with libboost_python_vc80-mt(-s)-1_35.lib I get unresolved externals for calls using __declspec(dllimport). Thanks, Chip

Hi all, Any tools that writes the build jam files automatically for a big project? If there is any good IDE that takes care of all these issues then it is also welcome. Considering the fact, that the project that I am going to embark upon will involve a lot of code and dependencies, I really don't want to get bogged down and stuck in just writing the correct makefiles. So, It would be great if I can use some tool that generates these jamfiles automatically for me. Hi all, i've written a small code for estimating the mean from a series of random numbers. The random numbers are generated with and without boost::thread. The simulation shows me that with boost::thread you only get a small performance. We cannot build boost 1.35 under Cygwin because Cygwin doesn't support wide char i/o yet. I heard boost 1.35 has a flag to turn off wide char. Anybody can tell me how to do it? thanks, James

I have now made the following declaration: boost::lexical_cast<boost::mpl::if_< boost::is_pointer<typename Value>, boost::remove_pointer<typename Value>::type, typename Value>>::type>(newVal); It works now for pointers too, but now I have the problem with the char type. First I have made a specialization for this type. Is it here also possible to make only one specialization or have I to provide both for pointer and value? Hello, I am looking for the BOOST library in either PDF/PS formats so that I can print the ones I need and read them offline (which I generally prefer). Reading though the boost documenting link, it appears quite a daunting task to setup boost doc build to generate PDF files (it has a bunch of dependencies). IIUC, in async_state_machine it's impossible to post an "internal" event from a state by calling queue_event(), as noone will actually call process_event(). Instead, it should be always done through the processor queue, like this: outermost_context_type &machine = outermost_context(); machine.my_scheduler().queue_event(machine.my_handle(), MyEvent()); Am I right? 2. Deferred events in async.machine. Say, we've got the following states (simplified code): struct State1 : simple_state<...> { typedef transition<EvGotoState2, State2> reactions; }; struct State2 : simple_state<...> { typedef mpl::list < transition<EvGotoState1, State1>, deferral<EvGotoState2> > reactions; }; Both events are queued to the machine from the "outer world". * We're already in State2. * We get a bunch of EvGotoState2 posted (eg., 10 events). All of them are queued to the state's deferred events queue. * EvGotoState1 comes. The machine goes to State1 and then immediately consumes 1 deferred EvGotoState2 and move to State2. What happens to the rest of the deferred events? Are they queued again to the deferral queue of State2? 3. Is it possible to clear all the deferred events? Is it possible to clear deferred events of a specific type? Eg., in State2 I'd like to alway defer only the *last* EvGotoState2, discarding all the previous deferred events of this type. Hi, I just tried to use enable_shared_from_this in boost interprocess, but it did not seem to work. I only got a bad_weak_ptr exception. Looking a little bit in shared_ptr.hpp (comparing the interprocess one and the "normal" one) it appears that calls to sp_enable_shared_from_this are not made in the constructors as they ought to be. Is this a known bug, or am I doing something wrong? Cheers Lars

Dear Boost Users: I have developed a number of reliable web based applications and ISAPI filters for Windows in C++ using several of the Boost libraries. Although I have no experience in Unix, I am very interested in doing similar web development in C++ on Unix. Can someone recommend a good compiler and platform (Unix Variant)? I've noticed that the following seem to be pretty popular for web servers. To keep things easy, I guess that I'd be using a specific variant for both development and web server: FreeBSD, Fedora, Ubantu, and CentOS. Please Advise, Jeff

hi all, I'm an absolutly newbie and am struggling with building boost under mingw with stlport. My configuration: Windows XP service pack 2 mingw (current versions of all needed parts) msys as command prompt stlport 5.1.5 boost 1_35_0 building stlport works fine, unit tests are all compiled and all test are ok. Building a small test project (using std::strings, fstreams and wchar_t) also works fine. When building boost without stlport, all libs are build except the serialization-lib where the reasons seems to be that gcc3.4.5 doesn't support wchar_t type. building boost with stlport only produces some of the libs. how i build stlport: - i unpacked stlport to "d:/se/libs/stlport-5.1.5" and changed to folder "./build/lib" - configure - mingw32-make -fgcc.mak clobber depend install (i only want to use dynamic libs) how i build boost with stlport: in file boost_1_35_0/tools/build/v2/user-config.jam i added: using stlport : 5.1.5 : d:/se/libs/stlport-5.1.5/stlport d:/se/libs/stlport-5.1.5/lib ; then i run the configure-skript, which gives the following erros (in a messagebox, may not be the correct error, as i had to translate it from german): rxvt00000cbc the NTVDM-CPU has detected an illegal command CS:0fe5 IP:20e3 OP:63 68 74 20 7a where i press the ingnore-button (googling didn't give me an explanation) then i run bjam like that: bjam -a -d2 --toolset=gcc stdlib=stlport stage serialization and NDEBUG

Hello everyone, I've written some code with the serialization library, using a binary archive and some derived classes. If I compile with -DNDEBUG then the code does stops working. If I remove just this one switch then everything works fine. Using -O0 or -O3 does not matter. This exists in 1_34_1 and 1_35_0. I am using linux with gcc 4.1.2. Any suggestions? Thanks, Jeff

Boost.MPI Problems

Static linking issues with custom library names

Hi all. I've built a static library that references boost threads, conditions and ptime. All the libraries were build with the following command "bjam --layout=system link=static release debug", then renamed to something more generic eg. boost_thread-mt.lib for the multi-threaded release version of the thread library. Now I know I did get the static libraries and not the DLL bridges because it was originally named libboost_thread-mt.lib. Actually I also used the --buildid command to add something other than -1_35, but I don't think that really matters. Anyway, the Win32 version of my project is built using VS2008, so I have a top level include file that defines BOOST_ALL_NO_LIB to prevent auto-linking. I then explicitly link the libraries that I need and build my project library. I assume it's actually linking everything in successfully since the output lib is vastly larger when I link the libs than when I don't. Now the real problem comes when I try to link to this library in my test application. I've switched up whether it is the lib or the application that defines BOOST_ALL_NO_LIB, and who actually links to the libraries etc. I've also made sure that they're all using the same run-time build settings eg. /MTd for both my lib and app, which would link to the -mt-gd version of the boost libraries. No matter what I do, I get a bunch of warnings about using locally defined symbols (changing which one links the libraries just changes whether the warning originates from my lib or boost's) and a few unresolved externals. I could suppress those by compiling against the Common Language Runtime, but somehow I think that I'm seeing these might be the root of my problem. Any thoughts? All I really want to be able to do is have an external app link to my libraries without having to also link to boost. I can only assume that I'm either not linking them into my library properly or that I'm not using the right boost defines. Hello, I'd like to use thread_safe_signals, and I'm wondering if there're any examples that highlight use-cases where the thread-safety is utilized? For instance, is it safe to connect() from a thread, while the signal is "signaling" in another thread? Is it safe to signal from a thread while another thread might destroy the signal? Another question: what would be the most simple way to do asynchronous signaling? Probably, there already exists something in boost (even not officially released) that provides such a functionality? I mean something like this: at the stage of connecting to a signal I'd like to supply an asynchronous queue along with slot handler, and at the stage of signaling the signal - instead of direct execution of a functor - must just post it to the associated queue (slots' return values are not of interest to me). problems compiling boost against visual studio 2008

first of all, hi to everyone, i´m new to boost and this is my first post i´m running windows vista x64 and visual studio 2008 i´ve followed the instructions from the "getting started" section but no good results here this is what i´ve done 1- download boost build and compile bjam 3.1.16 2- download boost 1.35 source 3- place the bjam executable in the boost1.35 main folder 4- execute bjam with these parameters first try with bjam --prefix=c:\boost --toolset=msvc install all done in the visual studio shell the compilation starts and it builds a lot of libraries and files. When i try to make my first Boost program the visual studio tells me that there is a lib missing (libboost_thread-vc90-mt-s-1_35.lib) why didn´t the VS compile this??? Questions about using program_options

I have a project that's currently doing manual command-line parsing, then using a suite of classes I developed to read from multiple formats of configuration files. In looking at boost libraries, I see that boost::program_options might be something worth using. The first question I have is "what config file formats does it use/ want" ? I'm still reading all of the docs, so this may become clear, but. The next question is, since this is one of the non-header-only libraries, how hard would it be to pull segments out of the boost distribution to ship with my suite of programs and build it along- side? Just to get the program_options component. (Though, as a side note, I'm also using Loki::SharedPtr in my project, so if that could be converted to boost::shared_ptr it might be less complicated. Then again, I'm using some of the more complicated features of SharedPtr, so it's not clear to me that boost::shared_ptr is adequate, which is why I didn't choose it in the first place.) Thanks... Any advice on taking portions of the boost code and bundling it into another source package would be appreciated. - Chris

[ASIO] permanently blocked io_service.run()

Hello, I have setup a multithreaded application with multiple io_service objects because I want to pick out the thread that executes a particular event handler. So each thread object will have a copy of their own io_service object. The main server object (who handles accepts) picks which thread executes an event handler. I hope that makes sense. Anyways the main run function of the thread object will have to call io_service.run() so that it can execute the event handlers that the server object sets up for it. My question is how do I keep the thread's io_service.run() from returning right away, since there will be no work for the io_service.run() to do until the server lines up a new connection for the thread to handle? I came up with ways to do this using deadline_timer_service.async_wait(), where the thread calls async_wait() and the event handler for the async_wait() just calls another async_wait(). This should keep work for the io_service.run() to do and permanently blocked but I find this approach quite hackish. But for all I know this could be why deadline_timer_service was created for. Any thoughts on a more elegant way of doing this? thanks jose "survival first, then happiness as we can manage it"

Hello, I want to make a functor which uses automatically an reference type if the provided value isn't a pointer. Is there some possibility to solve it that the template argument is automatically deduced? Important is that I have to possible calls one when the value is provided as value -> I need to have a reference parameter and the other is when a pointer is provided. Hi, I have been converting some of my pthread-code to boost::thread, and I commonly use thread-specific storage to store a pointer that is not intended to be deleted when the thread exits (the default action for thread_specific_ptr). In pthreads, specifying NULL as the cleanup_function accomplishes what I want, i.e. no cleanup is done. In boost::thread, specifying NULL will crash my program, because the implementation does not test for a null cleanup_function before invoking it. Since the cleanup function for thread_specific_ptr<T> takes an argument of type T*, this means that whereever I use thread_specific_ptr in this way, I have to define an empty function taking T*, to pass as the cleanup function. It seems pretty messy and wasteful to me, when all that is needed is a (cleanup_function != 0) test in the implementation. Is there a rationale for boost::thread not supporting a NULL cleanup_function pointer? Thanks, -bryan

Struggling with Solaris build

I'm struggling to get Boost built on a Solaris box here. Initially I was stuck on compilation errors due to v8plus issues. After some googling and trial and error I worked out what to put in user-config.jam to fix that. However, I'm now struggling with the following error: ... wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64 I'm using gcc-3.2 and the Sun linker, trying to build a 64bit version of just the program_options and regex libraries. Here's what I've got for the user-config.jam: using gcc : : : <address-model>64 <linker-type>"sun" <compileflags>"-m64" <linkflags>"-Wl,64" <instruction-set>"v9" ; I'm basically flummoxed at this point, and my google-fu is failing to find me a solution. Boost 1.35 weak_ptr::lock

Hello, I'm trying to update my codes Boost from 1.34.1 to 1.35 and I'm getting a test case failure dealing with weak_ptr. I have an std::vector of weak_ptr's and I've verified that the weak_ptr that get put in are valid. Then later I look through the whole vector and lock the weak_ptr's to call a virtual method on them. The weak_ptr says it's (!expired) and the (shared_ptr == true). But the vtable is all messed up and the shared_ptr's px is not a pointer to something I made the weak_ptr from. Soo... is there any idea about why the weak_ptr from 1.35 would do this when the weak_ptr from 1.34.1 works fine? The headers look remarkably the same so I have no idea. Thanks, Aaron

I want to initialize an ublas vector with zeros and always get compile errors in the debug mode which I do not understand, since this is supposed to be the right way as of the ublas FAQ: std::size_t vecSize = 50; bnu::vector<std::size_t> vec( ( bnu::zero_vector<std::size_t>(vecSize) ) ); What is wrong here? My versions are boost 1.35.0, gcc 4.3.0 on ubuntu hardy. BTW, is there some quasi-official code to serialize ublas vectors with the serialization library? Boost 1.35 threads library question

Hi there. This is an introductory question as I've just started to play with boost libraries. If this would be better on the threads-devel list, let me know, but I thought starting here would be good. I was playing with the threads library in 1.35, and I noticed that I can't (with gcc 4.3 on Linux) put boost::thread objects into an STL container. I think I was trying with a std::vector, in case that matters. I was reading in some of the C++0x documents that it's expected that the standard library thread implementation is expected to be able to have this work. The boost documentation doesn't explicitly say whether it should work or not. Is being non-copyable but movable enough to make this work? Or, would an object have to be copyable to be put into an STL container? I thought that was not the case, but. Thanks... - Chris

The shared_ptr's work in vectors just fine, plus they provide a convenient way to pass around a non-copyable object like a thread, as well as other thread-pool functions. tuple type question

Hello, at the moment I want to make a getter function for a tuple type. The tuple is internally hidden in a class. For that I want to make a function which returns the values inside the tuple. The best solution would be if I can make a enum which defines the position inside the tuple and a template function which returns the value for this tuple. I have tested the following, but it doesn't work: typedef struct Members { enum Member { name = 0, value = 1, }; }Members; template<enum Member member> element<0, Properties::Property>::type name()(const boost::tuples::tuple<std::wstring, boost::any>& prop) { return boost::tuples::get<member>(prop); } Can anyone give my an hint? What I see now, is that those references are not loaded correctly. [MPI] Compiliation problem while building boost

Hi, all, I'm trying to build Boost on linux using bjam. Everything seems to go smoothly except the compiliation of one file in Boost.MPI. I'm seeing the following error when trying to serialize from a polymorphic_iarchive. I'm new to boost::serialization, so I was hoping somebody could shed some light on what I was doing wrong? I tried googling and searching the archives, but didn't find anything yet. error C2678: binary '>>' : no operator found which takes a left-hand operand of type 'const boost::archive::polymorphic_iarchive' (or there is no acceptable conversion) c:\boost\include\boost-1_35\boost\archive\detail\interface_iarchive.hpp(62): could be 'Archive &boost::archive::detail::interface_iarchive<Archive>::operator >><const boost::serialization::nvp<T>>(const boost::serialization::nvp<T> &)' The code in question is essentially: virtual void foo(const boost::archive::polymorphic_iarchive& ar) { ar >> boost::serialization::make_nvp("typeName", *typePtr); ... } Also, it appears as though get_library_version() is private for polymorphic_iarchive_dispatch. I'm confused, isn't it public elsewhere? I was hoping to have access to it. I reckon there's a reason behind this, so I'm just curious as to why it's private. Thanks!

I havent been able to find a link from the boost homepage to the "library listing by category" page. The page I'm alking about is this one: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_35_0/libs/libraries.htm I fid it a really useful overview, when checking if boost can help solve a given problem. >From the home page, I folow the following chain of links: 1. Click on documentation.... http://www.boost.org/doc/ 2. Click on 1.35.0.... http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_35_0 But I cannot get from there to the libraries page above. Am I missing something, or is there something to be fixed here?

simple question about gil

I need to read, write (mid file stream), display, and resize (on screen only) an image or images. In giving a cursory examination of GIL it seems like total overkill and inappropriate for these simple needs but targeting something that is going to manipulate the images further. Is this an accurate assessment or are the tutorial examples simply focused for goals other than mine? Thanks.

date_time giving undefined references

Hello, I am trying to compile a simple example using the parsers and formatters of the date_time library using g++ under Cygwin. Documentation of utf8_codecvt_facet

Through google searches and examples I have found that using utf8_codecvt_facet from boost/program_options/detail/utf8_codecvt_facet.hpp allows me to imbue my std::wifstream like this: std::wifstream f(p.string().c_str()); std::locale loc; std::locale utf8loc(loc, new boost::program_options::detail::utf8_codecvt_facet()); f.imbue(utf8loc); and now the wifstream is able to read UTF-8 encoded files. However, I not been able to find any 'official' documentation of this feature, and I'm not really hooked on using undocumented features. Is there any documentation somewhere? /peter

Containers for already allocated memory

I am surprised that Boost does not seem to contain a vector-like container which uses a pre-allocated block of memory. In my own code I find this very useful, in particular with memory allocated by 'alloca'. Have I missed such a package? Is there any interest in such a package being submitted to boost if I tidied up my own code? Chris

Hello, I want to use boost::any in a project where I want store different values or pointers. What is the fastest solution to make the different actions for different value types? Using the type() member function? Is it also possible to detect if the value is a pointer or a value? Best regards Hansjörg

ptr_set

Hello all, I'm trying to use ptr_set with my class Hierarchy. Base is an abstract base class with a bunch of pure virtual functions. I've some derived classes with those virtual functions defined in them. I'm using this Base class hierarchy in another class (say Other). So I've declared a member variable of Other as ptr_set<Base> m_items ; this works fine on linux with gcc-4.2 but with VS2005, I'm getting a compilation error, saying that It cannot instantiate base class as it is having pure virtual functions. Am I doing some thing wrong here ? Surya

Boost::intrusive container of pointers

Is it possible to store CBaseObject* (base class pointers) in slist, hashtable, rbtree and avl tree? I am deriving CBaseObject from slist_base_hook, set_base_hook etc. But when using member_hook<CBaseObject*,...) and rbtree<CBaseObject*,...>, I am getting compiler errors. Boost documentation provides examples about objects and smart pointers. But can we store raw pointers in intrusive containers?
