[interprocess] example for boost::interprocess::map where the key is something in shared memory

does anyone have a simple example of a map in shared memory, where the key is also in shared memory & not a simple "int"? I am trying to use a key of type boost::interprocess::basic_string<wchar_t, ...>, value of type unsigned long, and I am not sure about the subtleties of using boost::interprocess::map<>.insert() where the key lives in shared memory. (the example http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_35_0/doc/html/interprocess/quick_guide.html… is useful but both the key and value are simple types.) If I understand right, you have to insert() an instance of the std::pair<> class. But if the map is in shared memory, does this mean the std::pair<> also has to live in shared memory as well? (vs. a local std::pair<> that exists on the stack) For some reason the basic_string<wchar_t,...> seems to have been instantiated in some other weird area of memory instead & it's very difficult to debug + figure out what's going wrong.

Hi there, Using the boost::serialization library, I'm hitting an assert while deserializing. It happens only in a specific set of circumstances requiring a shared_ptr to an abstract base class. Class "Derived" is derived from class "AbstractBase" which is abstract. I'm serializing two objects which are of type shared_ptr<AbstractBase> that point to objects of type Derived. After the two shared_ptr's are serialized to disk, when I read them back in I hit an assert in basic_iarchive.cpp: "Assertion `new_cid == cid' failed". This assert happens on the second object only. As far as I can tell from the serialization documentation, I am using the appropriate BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT() line for the derived class, as well as registering the base-derived relationship with base_object(), and I even threw in a couple of BOOST_SERIALIZATION_SHARED_PTR() calls for good measure although I don't think they do anything in my environment. Two additional pieces of information: - If the base class is not abstract, but I still use BOOST_IS_ABSTRACT(), I get the same assert. This might indicate that some necessary polymorphism code isn't being generated as a result of declaring the class abstract. - If I serialize the pointers directly instead of using shared_ptr, it does not hit the assert. I have a workaround for this problem: it works as expected if I define the load_construct_data() template function for the base class do to nothing (assert), instead of using the BOOST_IS_ABSTRACT() macro. Attached is the minimal code to reproduce the problem. I'm using boost 1.35.0 with gcc 3.3.5 on Linux (RHEL4). Is there something I'm missing to make this work? Hi, This is probably a very newbie question. I'd like to iterate through the values of a std::map. I searched through the archives, and found this thread on this mailing list about it: http://lists.boost.org/boost-users/2007/11/32374.php Unfortunately I can't put the partial recommendations together from that thread to work for me. While this is most probably due to my lack of experience with boost, can someone point to a sort-of complete usage solution to this question? Would be really appreciated. Akos

Calculating needed space for Boost.Serialization

Hi, I want to calculate exactly how much space it is needed to serialize a number of objects. What I'm thinking is another class that implements the Saving Archive concept and only invokes sizeof() rather than actually writing anything. From what I understand I should overload the << and & operators for this class to call save() or serialize() on the object, unless it is a POD (in which case the size is already known). Has this been done before? Thanks

MPL: Possible bug related to for_each and numbered vectors

Hi all, I stumbled across something very strange related to boost::mpl::for_each and numbered vectors and sets (as opposed to the variadic forms). The program below contains a typelist with 21 (i.e. more than BOOST_MPL_LIMIT_SET_SIZE) classes. This typelist is converted to a typelist containing pointers to those classes. Finally the main program calls for_each with that typelist to print the names of the types. This works without problems on Linux and Windows. But now: If you remove the include "boost/mpl/vector/vector30.hpp" everything still compiles fine without warnings under both operating systems. On Linux everything continues to work, whereas under Windows nothing is printed anymore. for_each does not loop through the typelist for an unknown reason. Everything works again, when reducing the number of classes to 20 (and adjusting the include to set20.hpp). From my understanding BOOST_MPL_LIMIT_SET_SIZE and its brothers and sisters should not have any impact on numbered sequences, only on variadic ones. But still it looks as if something very strange is happening here. First of all, I like to use the concept of a "master" shared_ptr. That is, I attempt to design my architectures so that there is one shared_ptr which persists for the lifetime of the object being pointed to; other shared_ptrs are transient, in that they persist for a shorter period of time (typically which a particular piece of work is being performed). To pursue the metaphor, the "master" shared_ptr holds its object in existence. It is the pointer which (when reset) ultimately causes the object to be deleted. Using this concept, my parent object holds the master shared_ptr of its child. (Typically there are multiple children and their master shared_ptrs are stored in a vector.) The child holds a weak_ptr to its parent. In my work, typically both parent and child inherit from enable_shared_from_this. The "trick" is to treat the parent-child relationship seriously. Since child objects do not exist except in the context of a parent, it is logical to create a function member of the parent which is responsible for creating the child and establishing linkages. (Or, if this needs to occur elsewhere, the child is constructed by some other [third- party] object's member function which creates the child and links the child and parent together.) It should not be necessary to construct the child in the parent's constructor, nor should it be necessary to establish linkages with the parent in the child's constructor. The problems you are concerned about need not exist. Calculating needed space for Boost.Serialization

Hi, I want to calculate exactly how much space it is needed to serialize a number of objects. What I'm thinking is another class that implements the Saving Archive concept and only invokes sizeof() rather than actually writing anything. From what I understand I should overload the << and & operators for this class to call save() or serialize() on the object, unless it is a POD (in which case the size is already known). Has this been done before? Thanks

Hi, Is there any means of obtaining how big my archive will be before actually serializing? Something like a special boost::archive that will count the size of what I'm serializing. I'm mainly concerned on allocating exactly the space I'll be needing for binary_oarchives. I guess I should follow the SA concept (since I'm trying to find the size before saving) but how can I know any extra overhead? Thanks

I'm trying to get the threads library to link. I've built all the libraries using bjam (--toolset=darwin) and they are in /usr/local/lib (e.g., libboost_thread-mt-1_35.dylib). Then I want to add the edges. I'm having some problems getting boost::lexical_cast to work for me. I have an abstract class, and it calls a pure virtual function which returns a boost::any. I don't know the type of the boost::any, but in the place I'm working now, I pretty much can assume it's boolean, but it could be a 'bool' data type, or an 'int', or a 'short', or any other thing depending on how the boost::any that the method returned to me was constructed. Hi, I'm trying to use the boost unit test framework, and I have a question regarding automatic test module registration and the automatic definition of the init_unit_test_suite() function. Hello all, I've encountered some behaviour of maps in both fusion and mpl that I did not expect, when inserting elements with the same key. Both libraries behave the same. To illustrate, I wrote the code below (full source at the end of this post), where I create a map with a single element an then insert an element with the same key (int_<1>). I expected the size<> of the resulting map to be 1. Instead, the size is 2. getting back information about a serialized class from a binary archive

Dear all, I'm using the serialization library to serialize some classes to a binary archive. These classes are basically arrays of some numerical type. As an example say they are doubles. Later I would like to read one of these binary archives into the same structure but using another numerical type, to which you could promote the first one. Say for example std::complex<double>. If I was using a simply a text file, I could read the double, without caring about its original type, into the new type because it will be automatically promoted. You can not do this with the binary file. So my question is, is there any way to extract information about the class stored in the binary archive, in this case the numerical type of the array? I thought in using the version number of the class to label the original type, is this the only way? In coding: template<class T> struct SimpleClass{ typedef T num_type; num_type data_; template<class Archive> void serialize(Archive ar, const unsigned int version) { ar & data_; } }; Now given a binary archive containing a instance of SimpleClass<double>, how to read it to an instance of SimpleClass<std::complex<double> > ? Message Queues with Strings instead of Integers

Hi, We are serializing an object to a string and then we want to send it to another process using MQ. When received, it's deserialized and the original object is reconstructed again. We are trying to use message_queue from Boost Interprocess but we still having some troubles sending String messages. (I've been noticed about the boost examples using integers) The first issue is about std::string. I read on boost documentation that MQ do not works with std::string so my first attempt was to use boost::interprocess:string. However, I've received library error while trying to use interprocess::string, so I tried to use std::string and mysteriously it worked fine. After we change the application to another machine with the same configuration, it didn't work again, so I guessed that's the clue why std::string is not guarantee to work in all cases. My question is, what should be the right way to transmit a string message using MQ? Thanks in advance, Julian Magnone

Hi I have recently began familiarising myself with the serialization library (Boost 1.35). I am specifically interested in XML serialization. This is probably a trivial question: can you get the actual name of the class to appear in the opening tag of the class instance? All I get so far is the class_id for the first instance and class_id_reference thereafter. This does make sense, of course, but I would like to know if this really is the default behaviour, and if it is, can it be changed to display the class name? Thanks Alexander Kabanov

GCC changed the way #elif's are handled (is now more std-compliant apparently) but this broke all the #elif BOOST_PP_ITERATION_DEPTH() == N lines. They need to be replaced with #elif defined(BOOST_PP_ITERATION_DEPTH) #if BOOST_PP_ITERATION_DEPTH == N ... #endif Attached is a patch that does so (against trunk). Cheers, Chris

VS 2008 and boost::thread (possibly /clr related?)

My situation is as follows. Using Visual Studio 2008 C++ (express) and boost 1.35 (binary install). Create /clr application, add the libraries for the compiler and the linker, change from /clr pure to straight /clr so that it compiles. If I then add a file that contains absolutely nothing other than "#include <boost/thread.hpp>", my application will not launch, giving an error dialog saying that it failed to initialize. Compile error using serialize

Just started experimenting with the serialization library. I started by writing a small example very much like that shown in the tutorial. I created a simple class to serialize containing two unsigned int vars and an std::string This is close to what I would need to do once I move beyond familiarizing myself with the use of the library. [Asio] Cannot set port number on endpoint

Hi, I'm new to Boost and am trying to write a command line networking tool. I am currently working in Windows XP SP2 using MS Visual Studio 2005. I use the default compiler. I have read a few tutorials and examples on using Asio, and thus wrote my app using that information, as well as information from the reference library. Currently the problem that I have is that I cannot set the port used by the endpoint to the value I want - 10540 - it is always set to 11035. I'm not sure why this is, I cant find the number 11035 anywhere in the code or documentation so I am not sure where it comes from. I have tried to instantiate a new endpoint using the IPv4 address as a string and the port number as a short, and have also tried to construct a query that specifies the protocol, host name, service name (port number in this case) and the numeric_service flag. In either case, when I debug, the port of the endpoint is always 11035, no matter what I set it to. I am able to connect to the endpoint, but not able to write data to it. I get a "File handle supplied is not valid error message". I presume the most likely reason for this is that the port 11035 is not open. The machine that I am trying to connect to is running Red Hat EL4 Update 4. I would appreciate any help in this matter. Thank you, Jonathan.

[iostreams] buffer flushing problem

Hi all, I have encountered some strange behavior while using the Boost iostreams zlib compression filter. The problem is tricky to reproduce -- I have posted a tarball that includes an example program (pasted below) together with a 72k binary file that will be read in and compressed: http://proteowizard.sourceforge.net/temp/zlib_error.tgz If you're curious, the 72k data array comes from an array of doubles, which were intensities from a single scan on a mass spectrometer. The problem occurs on platforms darwin, gcc, msvc. In general, the functions run_filter_1 and run_filter_2 produce identical output. However, when the input is the binary array read in from the 72k file, run_filter_1 appears not to flush some buffer properly. This may be due to my ignorance of how to force the buffers to flush, though it's not clear to me that this should be necessary with the use of boost::iostreams::copy(). Sorry for the double post. I had to patch Source of the Program Options to solve this issue. Here the organization of the project which produced Linking errors: BoostProgramOptions.LIB (we link against DLL version of LIB) ^ | Lib with PO retriever (static lib) ^ | +------------------------------------------------------------+ | | Lib A Lib B ^ ^ | | +------------------------------------------------------------+ ^ | DLL which links with A & B Lib A & Lib B rely on the same program options reader. Initial problem was as described below. To solve this issue I had to remove the arg definition in the value_semantic.cpp file and initialize it in the header file detail/value_semantic.hpp with MS specific __declspec(selectany) which causes to ignore multiple defined linker symbol. Here the linke in the value_semantic.hpp extern BOOST_PROGRAM_OPTIONS_DECL __declspec(selectany) std::string arg("arg"); I hope you can reproduce this behaviour and apply this patch to next boost destributions. Boost Pool - ordered_malloc() problem

Hi is there a known problem with boost pool and using ordered_malloc()? I'm creating a pool with chunk size set to 16, and requesting blocks of memory that are multiples of 16, nothing huge(like 3*16), by calling ordered_malloc(n). This works for a few calls but eventually it crashes in simple_segregated_storage.hpp in try_malloc_n() when it calls nextof(iter);. This is using VS2008. Thanks

[range] Trying to make an "is_range" metafunction

Hello all, I am trying to make an "is_range" metafunction that (essentially) returns mpl::true_ when the template parameter is a range (as defined by the boost::range library). I can do this if I create a specialization for every "non-range" type currently specialized by the library (such as built-in arrays, char strings, etc.). However, I'd like to have is_range work for a user-defined range without the user *also* needing to specialize is_range. Proto transform : fold & fold_tree use case

Hello, I'm currently trying to write some transforms but I think I horribly fail because I must be missing an important point. Let's say we have a grammar defined as : struct skeleton : or_< terminal< bp::_ > , bitwise_and<skeleton,skeleton> > {}; What I need to do is build a type out of a given expression. This type is in fact a structure containing a tuple of class that represents MPI process. So my idea was to write transform that do the following : * for terminals, extract the argument (which is in fact a functor class) and create a process network class instanciation with the argument and a PID (basically a mpl::long_<>). * for the & operator, transform the left and right argument, and build the tuple out of both results by merging the contents of both into a unique process network. My biggest concern is to have the PID value to be kept across transform call and correctly increased for each terminal. To do so, am I forced to use fold (or fold_tree cause in the real code I have more than the sole & operator) or is there a simple way to say transform left and right and get the resulting types ? Then, how is State kept through fold_tree or transform iteration ? Should I kept the PID current value in an external parameters ? Thanks in advance. PS : if more detailed code is needed, I'll try to see what can be publicly dispatched here.

Interrupting Threads with boost::thread::interrupt()

Hi folks, I am having issues with boost::thread::interrupt(). As far as I understood, calling this function will throw an exception in the corresponding thread. How can deal with blocking functions, such as a calls to accept() or when a thread is waiting on a condition variable to change? Basically the thread blocks somewhere in a while (true) loop. Injecting interruption points manually with boost::this_thread::interruption_point() does not seem to help here either. boost::thread::interrupt() (or interrupt_all in a thread_group), simply does not return. [ASIO] when does basic_datagram::async_read() call the handler?

Hello, For the function basic_datagram::async_read() the asio documentation states: "The handler to be called when the receive operation completes." Does that occur when a UDP datagram is received in full or the buffer has filled? I'm just concerned that it might insert into the buffer more than one UDP datagram before calling the handler or a non-complete UDP datagram. I wanted to use the async_read_until but it states that its for streams, which makes sense if the basic_datagram::async_read function returns on a per complete datagram basis. I'm also assuming large UDP datagrams (that take up multiple packets) will be collected by the transport layer before being presented to the application layer (though this is not so much an Asio question as it is a Linux network stack question). thanks a lot! jose "survival first, then happiness as we can manage it"

Hi, I've been using the BGL library with Visual C++ to implement the Kamada_Kawai algorithm and have had no errors. I moved this code to g++ and I've had many errors and particularly one that I do not know how to solve. Hi, I have a question related to Boost.Graph bundle properties when there are two distinct vertex/edge types. I would like to implement a network structure using Boost.Graph. In this structure, edges and vertices can be of two types. A vertex can be either of type VA or of type VB, and and edge can be of type EA or EB. The data element to which a vertex/edge is associated differs depending on the vertex/edge type. I will be using the adjacency_list and bundle properties adjacency_list<OutEdgeList, VertexList, Directed, VertexProperties, EdgeProperties, GraphProperties, EdgeList> I'm trying to figure what to use for VertexProperties and EdgesProperties, focusing on maintainability and flexibility. Also, I would like the whole structure to be serializable. This seems like a rather generic problem, yet I wasn't able to find an easy and elegant solution. Here are some ideas for VertexProperties (the same scheme can directly be used for EdgeProperties). 1a.- VertexProperties is set to boost::shared_ptr<VirtualVertexProp>, where VirtualVertexProp is a polymorphic class from which classes specific to types VA or VB can inherit. This approach has some issues though: for example, graph copies have to explicitly handle property clonage. 1b.- Instead of boost::shared_ptr, boost::ptr_array<VirtualVertexProp,1> could be used. The property instances are cloned when the ptr_array is copied. 2.- VertexProperties is a simple class that contains a type enum (VA or VB), and an index that identifies a data element in an external container. There would be two external containers, one containing VA data, the other for VB data. The advantage of (1b) is automatic memory management -- when a vertex is deleted, its properties also die. With (2), properties have to be manually deleted when an vertex is removed. On the other hand, (2) is a bit more simple to serialize, since there's no dynamic allocation (i.e. not on the user side) and no polymorphism (no BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT_GUID...). My questions are: - In (1b), will boost::ptr_array<VirtualVertexProp,1> provide the expected behavior, i.e. that of a clone_ptr? - Am I missing something? While trying to generate a small example, I found out, what is causing the problem: I marked the grammar class using the closure with __declspec(dllexport), which causes MSVC to instantiate all members of a template, even if they are never needed. It seems that otherwise the "context" member function is never instantiated. If you remove the __declspec(dllexport), everything compiles. I still think, that the code is wrong, because it returns a pointer, where it should return a reference. I have attached a small example, which triggers the problem. By the way, the example implements a real parser, which uses the standard C++ runtime to convert the real number into a double. I had to implement this, because I found out, that the Spirit real_p parser creates numerically different results from the standard runtime, i.e. parsing the string "1.8" delivers a number like 1.8000000532 using Spirit, while the C++ runtime delivers something like 1.7999999973, which is always closer to the real value. [bind] using NULL as a bound argument

I am attempting to use Boost.Bind to create a callable where some of the bound arguments might be NULL. The problem seems to be that NULL expands to 0. As a literal constant, this is assignable to any pointer, but once all the template stuff happens, you end up with an expression with integer type, and that's different. Similarly (and more predictably), this fails, too: int z = 0; f(z); I have a workaround, which is to replace the constant NULL with an expression which is assignable to any pointer type. Fortunately, this is easy in C++: class NullPlaceholder { public: template <class T> operator T*() const { return((T*)NULL); } }; NullPlaceholder _NULL; Now, I can write (std::tr1::bind(f, _1))(_NULL); and the compiler is happy. Is there a better workaround for this problem? It seems like wanting to use NULL as a constant would be a pretty common case. Ideally, bind would be fixed so that NULL works, but I'm not sure how to do that without loosening the type checking for all int->pointer conversions. (I played around with trying to use specialization to add some scaffolding so that the A{1,2,3,...} template types for an int 0 literal would actually use a NullPlaceholder, but I didn't get very far, and while this would work for the compilers I use, it would not be formally portable.) A documentation note, at least, would have helped me figure out what was going wrong. Providing _NULL as a "placeholder" in the library would be the next best thing to having NULL work as is. I'm not sure if there are any other common expressions in C++ which will run into similar issues. Integer and string literal constants work just fine, but I may be missing some more subtle case. Marc P.S. It occurs to me that replacing the runtime's NULL with a macro which expanded to a constant of type NullPlaceholder should work perfectly (and does in my tests). Any use of NULL in an expression would dtrt, and optimize to the use of a constant. But overriding the runtime like this just feels sketchy.

Boost::multi_array and reducing dimensions (part II)

I have a stream of numbers and I want to apply a view onto it via the boost::multi_array. I am basically taking a slice of an n- dimensional tensor of data. In my case, I am not currently handling tensors greater than 4. The challenge is that I want to decide at runtime where to slice the array. In my program, this is actually from the GUI. Building boost for VS2005 SP1 & VS 2008

Hi, I would like to build boost library in 2 configurations (as mentioned below) for my project. 1. Visual Studio 2005 SP1 2. Visual Studio 2008 Also I want to use is on 32bit windows XP and also on 64 bit. So I guess I need it with above 2 configurations (VS2005 SP1 & 2008) both on 32 bit and 64 bit machine. Please confirm. Hi Ion, sorry not to get back sooner - I've been on vacation... It is not good, that it is not possible to do it this way. I will try to ask the XQilla developer if it would be possible to change the source code for not using raw pointers. But I do not see it well.. Is it hard to change this in project such a xqilla is (it calls xerces libraries and xercess calls icu...)? What is your experience? Do you see some other solution how to use C++ object from more instancess of program when not used interprocess library? Thank you for your advice. Hi Niels, thanks for your reply :-) By now, I realise that what I'm trying to do is to use a "smart reference" instead of a normal reference. This is "forbidden" in the boost Ublas documentation. On the other hand, the smart reference type I created seems to work fine for my application. If we could use the reference type of the StorageType as the reference type of the matrix class (see below), then at least it would be possible to use the smart reference in cases where it does work. In answer to your question, yes I would like to replace (in matrix.hpp) typedef const T &const_reference; typedef T &reference; with typedef typename A::const_reference const_reference; typedef typename A::reference reference; When I locally made the changes in matrix.hpp, so far it seems to work. My troubles when compiling without link=static. (with msvc-8.0)

My building platform : using msvc : 8.0 ; I have attached som attempt in compiling some boost examples. Notice I have set C:\Boost\lib in my LIB environment variable (set LIB=%LIB%;c:\Boost\lib ) log => command line | direcorty file_size.log => bjam file_size | BOOST_ROOT\libs\filesystem\example simple_ls.log => bjam file_size | BOOST_ROOT\libs\filesystem\example first.log => bjam first | BOOST_ROOT\libs\program_options\example minmax_timer.log => bjam minmax_timer | BOOST_ROOT\libs\algorithm\minmax file_size, simple_ls and first all work fine when adding the magic option link=static. bjam minmax_timer does not work both with and wothout link=static, instead minmax_ex works fine with and without link=static, that's why I have not listed it in my trouble list of course. I would appreciate any help in solving any of my troubles. Notice I have compiled boost with bjam --build-type=complete install Onestly I am a bit pessimistic. Still I hope I am missing something obvious. I can't see why link=static works so fine while without link=static all this troubles arise.

It seems that the only way to use such a container in the thread-safe manner, is to perform all the necessary locking at some higher-level of your design. Besides the problem you mentioned, you've got another issue: usually you wish to get not just "physical" thread-safety (meaning that your container remains in a consistent state), but a "logical" one. Consider the following code: if (myVector_.size()) { Element element = myVector_[0]; } It doens't make sense that size() and operator[]() themselves are "thread-safe", as between these calls the size might change. This means that the user of your container has to lock it anyway. If so, your internal locking appears to be useless overhead.

[boost.thread] thread safe circular_buffer implementation

Hello, I wrote my template based CircularBuffer class. Here the primary aim is to make everything thread safe. Multiple concurrent reads are possible, but only exclusive write is possible. Here we have index operator overloaded. As usual index operator has 2 versions, const and non-const versions. T& operator [] (unsigned index); // return as reference T operator [] (unsigned index) const; // return by value In contrast, standart library container classes return by const reference in const methods. Here I'm returning by value. Below you can see my complete implementation. There may be possible potential risks here. For example, in overloaded index operator (const function) it returns by value, so read lock assures it's safety. But I can't say the same things for non-const function which returns reference. If you write something like this: T& _refT = mCircularBuffer[0]; It returns as reference, and some other time you are free to change the value of _refT (after leaving the index operator scope). So write lock is unlocked, and as a consequence it's not thread safe so. And also iterators are same as the index operator, not thread safe. I'm looking for much safer implementation. Hi! I'm looking for a method to execute some code for each thread starting. It suffices to run that code for each boost::thread. I want to initialize some thread local storage for each thread automatically. The creating(!) thread shall supply an initial value and the created(!) thread shall receive this value, essentially a copy of some thread local variable. That is the new thread shall create a copy of the same variable which the creating thread has. Is that possible using boost::thread? I hope my explaination is clear enough. Frank

Nested std::for_each and Boost.Lambda

Hello, I'm trying to convert the following code to a more functional counterpart using std::for_each: BOOST_FOREACH ( std::vector <keyword_matchable *>::value_type i, haystack->_children ) { std::for_each (needle->_children.begin (), needle->_children.end (), boost::lambda::bind (&keyword_matchable::_match_new, this, i, boost::lambda::_1)); } As you can see, basically this is a nested foreach loop: for each haystack->_children, we're looping for each needle->_children, and calling this->_match_new (haystack_child, needle_child). Now, while code works, as a sort of personal challenge I tried rewriting this to a purely std::for_each () based approach; however, I don't quite understand how I am supposed to use the parent loop's _1 inside a nested loop; consider this code: std::for_each(haystack->_children.begin (), haystack->_children.end (), boost::lambda::bind( boost::lambda::ll::for_each(), needle->_children.begin (), needle->_children.end (), boost::lambda::protect ( boost::lambda::bind ( &keyword_matchable::_match_new, this, boost::lambda::_1, boost::lambda::_1)))); As you can see, i have used the boost::lambda::_1 argument twice; logically, the same argument is provided twice to that function. Now, I've read something about using boost::lambda::protect to "prevent argument substitution to take place", however, I fail to understand how this exactly works. Anyone has any idea how I can call the function keyword_matchable::_match_new with both the current nesting level _1 and the parent nesting level _1 as arguments ? Thanks in advance! Serialization triggers .lib and .exp file generation in VS2005

Hi, I tried to use boost serializing for a std::set. The serializing itself works fine, however, after implementing the serialization the compiler started to generate a .exp and a .lib file, even though the application is no DLL. Since the application is large and generating those files takes some time I tracked down the reason, and was surprised to realize that it was the serialization that triggered it. More precisely, the .lib and .exp will be generated if (and only if) I include the 4 lines of code calling the serialization. Any ideas? Boost version is 1.35, Visual Studio 2005 english SP1 on WinXP. Can I construct boost::multiIndex so as to allow key/value pairs to be entered at construction time or should I just use std::map and write a function. Any design advice apreciated. Compiling Boost as static on MacOS (darwin)

Hi people, I'm sure this subject as already been treated. I apologies for requesting it one time again. I try to compile boost libs as static libs (& multi-thread & universal & why not monolithic) and now I'm sure the ./configure compilation can't do that for me. So I began to go through the bjam way... but I'm absolutely not sure of the syntax and options to do what I want. (--build-type=static ???) My first try made me dynamic ".a" in many many folders and no ./include and no ./lib like in a standard install. And many error message when trying to copy files in the system lib directory (that I don't want to). What is the good way to compile boost on mac OS as static lib in the good folders ? (I've already done it on windows, I remember it much easyer, why ?) Germain

This causes a problem for me, as I'm developing an ublas matrix that has its data on disk rather than in memory: ublas::matrix< double, row_major, DiskStorage > m; // stores data on disk I would like ublas::matrix to use the reference type that is declared by its storage type. typedef A::reference reference; My question is: is this a mistake in the design, or is there a reason why T& should always be the reference type of an ublas matrix? Hi, I know it's stated that compiling boost for MinGW is not supported, but still, I see some online resources about this. I tried several approaches, but none of them seem to work. Is there any authorotive information on how does it really work? The approaches I tried and which all failed so far: - try to compile boost running bjam.exe from a Windows Command Prompt - try to compile boost from an MSYS prompt, going through the ./configure && make && make install process (I can provide outputs in case they are needed) Any help would be appreciated. Compile errors with Phoenix closures

Hi all, I posted this issue a week ago to the Spirit mailing list only, but I got no reply. So I repost this onto the Boost mailing list as well: I tried to compile a Spirit grammar parsing a real number using closures under Microsoft Visual C++ 2005. The same grammar compiles fine on Linux using GCC 4.x. Boost version is 1.35.0 in both cases. As far as I understood, the error is caused by an assertion inside the closure class template: closure_frame_t& context() { assert(frame!=0); return frame.get(); } (line 352 of boost/spirit/phoenix/closures.hpp) Even if I define NDEBUG, Phoenix closures don't compile, because the return statement after the assertion returns a pointer to a closure_frame_t and not a reference. From my point of view, this is not really a compiler issue, but a bug in the header file boost/spirit/phoenix/closures.hpp. I do not understand, why GCC compiles this without any errors, because I think the code should not compile at all. error_code and error_category problem

In my project (using asio) I have something like this: void Foo::myCallback(const boost::system::error_code &e) { if(e == boost::asio::error::operation_aborted) { // bla bla... } } This call is made across a shared dll and I notice that for a "strange" reason e == boost::asio::error::operation_aborted was always false. I discover that when the temporary object boost::system::error_code is constructed from the constants boost::asio::error::operation_aborted the error_code's costructor take a pointer to a "error_category" and the comparison operator is (m_cat is an error_category pointer): inline friend bool operator==( const error_code & lhs, const error_code & rhs ) { return lhs.m_cat == rhs.m_cat && lhs.m_val == rhs.m_val; } In my situation (using shared modules) lhs.m_cat == rhs.m_cat points to differents memory regions (even if are of the same type "system_category") because of the static initialization in the function "get_system_category". intrusive avl_set and offset_ptr

Hi, I try to use intrusive avl_set to put the set into a memory mapped file (I manage the file myself using just mapped_region. If I declare my node without offset_ptr my test program works as expected except that the pointers in the file are absolute. If I use offset_ptr I get a runtime assertion (see below). This is easily seen if you consider that indices of a multi_index_container (and STL containers) guarantee that elements with equivalent key are grouped together. [boost-users][multi-index] iterating though index keys

Hi, I'm trying to replace few data structures and types defined in my application in terms of std containers, with the mutli_index_container. Some of those types look like this: struct Entry { int someForeignKey; int data1; std::string data2; //.... }; typedef std::deque<Entry> Entries; typedef std::map<int, Entries> EntriesByForeignKey; I'd like to rewrite the above map as follows: typedef mi::multi_index_container < Entry, mi::indexed_by < mi::hashed_non_unique<mi::tag<foreignKey>, mi::member<Entry, int, &Entry::someForeignKey> > > > Entries; typedef Entries::index<foreignKey>::type EntriesByForeignKey; Now, I'd like to iterate through the *keys* of this index, and for each key - iterate through all its values. IIUC, the second part can be accomplished like this: { Entries entries; EntriesByForeignKey::iterator begin = entries.get<foreignKey>().find(theKey), end = entries.get<foreignKey>().end(); for_each (begin, end, ....); } ...but how can I iterate through all the keys of this index? Hello, at the moment I'm reading the documentation from Phoenix. Now I have read in the first pages that there are 2 possibilities to define a functor 1) find_if(c.begin(), c.end(), arg1 % 2 == 1) 2) struct is_odd_ { template <typename ArgT> struct result { typedef bool type; }; template <typename ArgT> bool operator()(ArgT arg1) const { return arg1 % 2 == 1; } }; function<is_odd_> is_odd; Okay this 2 possibilities I understand. customized circular_buffer (thread safe implementation)

Hi everyone, I wrote my template based CircularBuffer class. Here the primary aim is to make everything thread safe. Multiple concurrent reads are possible, but only exclusive write is possible. Here we have index operator overloaded. As usual index operator has 2 versions, const and non-const versions. T& operator [] (unsigned index); // return as reference T operator [] (unsigned index) const; // return by value In contrast, standart library container classes return by const reference in const methods. Here I'm returning by value. Below you can see my complete implementation. There may be possible potential risks here. For example, in overloaded index operator (const function) it returns by value, so read lock assures it's safety. But I can't say the same things for non-const function which returns reference. If you write something like this: T& _refT = mCircularBuffer[0]; It returns as reference, and some other time you are free to change the value of _refT (after leaving the index operator scope). So write lock is unlocked, and as a consequence it's not thread safe so. And also iterators are same as the index operator, not thread safe. I'm looking for much safer implementation. [Test] custom Exception

Is there any nice way to achive more detailed information about uncaught custome exceptions in a Boost unit test. I understand that it is possible to register custom exceptions, but that is quite some work when using several 3rd party libraries. I would be even hapier if it was possible to get some stacktrace, or linenumber (within the Boost test file) on which the exception occured. Jarl

Finding several Files

Hello All, I am trying to figure out the path to several files w/ the same name inside a certain directory structure. I was thinking of using the find_file() function from the filesystem library (see below). Unfortunately, the function stops when the first match is encountered. Is there a better way and/or alternative?? [bjam, binary compatibility] --layout=system and copying of binaries; different compiler versions

Following scenario: I have two machines M_a and M_b. M_a is running gcc4.1, M_b is running gcc4.2. Both have the same Boost Libs (1.35) compiled -with identical options- and installed (with their resp. gcc). I have used bjam option --layout=system. The Boost libs do therefore *not* have gcc41 or gcc42 in their names. Thus, the names are the same on both machines... which leads me to the following question: May I copy binaries (that link against Boost.Regex, Boost.FileSystem etc) from M_a to M_b? (or vice versa) The linker is happy as the libs required are there, but will it really work? Is this an *evil* thing to do? Best regards Christoph

Hi all, I'm working on Intel Core2 Duo machine running Linux and have the following problem: I want to compile 32-bit versions of the boost libs with gcc, so that I can link and create 32bit programs. Unfortunately if I use bjam --toolset=gcc stage the libraries are built as 64bit libraries so if I link I get the following error: >g++ filesystem_test.cpp -g -m32 -c -o filesystem_test.o -L../boost/boost_1_35_0/stage/lib -I../boost/boost_1_35_0 >g++ filesystem_test.o -L../boost/boost_1_35_0/stage/lib -m32 -o filesystem_test -lboost_filesystem-gcc41-mt /usr/bin/ld: skipping incompatible .../boost/boost_1_35_0/stage/lib/libboost_filesystem-gcc41-mt.so when searching for -lboost_filesystem-gcc41-mt If I omit -m32 everything works fine.
