I'm trying to compile and run a very simple unit test using the boost test library on Windows with MinGW, and I'm running into a segfault problem. I searched around the issue, and it seems I've found references to such an issue from 2003: http://lists.boost.org/Archives/boost/2003/09/52920.php and there Jeff Garland says it's been fixed already. has it? So it seems my problem is that my boost build is not making '.a' versions of all the libraries, only '.dylib' versions. Out of the box it should be building both? They are otherwise the same thing. boost::asio breaks my DLL

Hi, I am using boost 1.35 on MSVC2005, WinXP SP2, with the prebuilt boost libraries from www.boostpro.com. When trying to create a DLL, everything builds correctly. The DLL is correctly loaded by the exe, and the imported functions are visible. That is, until I add #include "boost//asio.hpp" to the DLL source. It still compiles and links, but at runtime I now get this error: LDR: LdrpWalkImportDescriptor() failed to probe x:\simon\Dev\xpworkingcopy\trunk\client\lib\Network.dll for its manifest, ntstatus 0xc0150002 This suggests the DLL has not had all its dependencies fulfilled, correct? I've tried putting boost_system-vc80-mt-gd-1_35.dll in my working directory, but no change. Can anyone help me? Thanks so much! Simon -- Linux Counter: User# 424693

Converting an std::vector to std::wstring

Hi: What is the best way (in terms of efficiency) to convert an std::vector of wchar_t to std::wstring. I can think of a oupple of aproaches: 1. using std::copy. 2. using boost::lexical_cast. 3 using boost::foreach 4. Usin he boost::serialization library. The std::wstring doesn't ned to be output to a file. Any advice apreciated. I just downloaded boost 1.35 and built the standard config. I have a collection of files in the /lib output folder that all end in .dylib. I am specifically interested in the python boost library, which is there as well. However the project that I am using that requires this library is expecting a file that ends with a .so extension. Being new to unix/mac I am assuming these are the equivalent differences between a .dll and .lib file on Windows? In any case how do I get the .so or static lib version of python boost? Many thanks

[Boost.Test] Compiling on Mac OS X

Hi, We have run into problems trying to compile Boost.Test on a Mac OS X 10.3 system using GCC version 3.3 (details below). We are using the "included" implementation of Boost.Test in a shared library that we build using our own build system. This works fine on various different platforms and compilers, however part of Boost.Test fails to compile on Mac OS X. We are including Boost.Test in our shared library in the following way: // Define this to declare all Boost.Test symbols as __declspec(dllexport) // rather than __declspec(dllimport). #define BOOST_TEST_SOURCE #define BOOST_TEST_DYN_LINK #include <boost/test/included/unit_test.hpp> The compiler errors (see below) indicate that some symbols related to signal handling are undefined. Either, some required system headers are not included, or these symbols are not portable and not available on Mac OS X (10.3). Has this problem been encountered before? Is there an easy workaround for it, such as defining certain symbols before including the Boost.Test headers? Could it be somehow related to the way we are building Boost.Test? Furthermore, it would be interesting for us to know what the status of Boost.Test on Mac OS X is in general. Unfortunately, the "Portability" section in the documentation http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_35_0/libs/test/doc/portability.html as well as the rest of the documentation do not provide a lot of information regarding support for different platforms. [BGL] why not breakup put_get_helper into three structs?

Helllo, I was wondering why put_get_helper shouldn't be three structs (put_helper, get_helper, put_get_helper, with the latter deriving from from the formers) instead of one? My rationale is outlined below along with the proposed code. //Begin Rationale Problem: want a helper method for readable property maps. Solution1: use exist boost::put_get_helper and just never use the put function. Problem with solution 1: 1) the put function will still be "callable", and 2) calling the put function will result in an invalid assignment to a read-only variable compiler error, which is cryptic to decipher, ie, that even though the put function does exist it should not be called. The only way to clarify this would be via documentation, which then brings about the problem of keeping code in sync with comments. Solution2: make a helper method for readable property maps that won't make the put companion function a valid function call, ie, break up boost::put_get_helper to put_helper, get_helper, and put_get_helper which derives from the latter two. Problems with solution 2: None that I can see. I have used boost for some time on windows with msvc, but I am trying to install & use it with mingw-g++. I'm no gcc expert, but it seems that ld requires specific extensions for libraries, and bjam is not generating the right ones. In particular, under mingw, the flag -lboost_unit_test_framework Will match boost_unit_test_framework.lib (the import library for the dll) Or libboost_unit_test_framework.a But NOT libboost_unit_test_framework.lib Which is what bjam produces. Here is an approach that WONT work: Using -llibboost_unit_test_framework Or -llibboost_unit_test_framework.lib Fails because the leading 'lib' is automatically stripped out by ld. As a solution I just renamed all lib*.lib files to lib*.a, but something seems basically wrong with the situation. I don't know WHY bjam used a '.lib' suffix, since I built the libraries using gcc. The static libraries I generate from gcc should be linkable from gcc... I use mingw + msys to build boost as follows: 1) I installed MinGW Automated Installer, MingW GCC 4.3.0, and then MSYS via its installer. - this creates C:\MingW and C:\msys\1.0. The gcc-4.3.0 files are extraced into C:\mingw 2) I open the MSYS shell by running msys.bat 3) I fetch boost/trunk into my home directory using svn. 4) I run tools/jam/build_dist.sh to create bjam 5) I copy bjam.exe to /mingw/bin 6) from within the msys shell, I run bjam --toolset=gcc --layout=system --build-type=complete --prefix=/mingw When I am done, under /mingw/lib I have files with names like: boost_*.dll boost_*.lib libboost_*.lib In particular, the static libraries have a '.lib' suffix. I have googled and searched the boost site, and I can find issues related to mingw/etc but nobody else seems to have _this_ problem. Is there something I am just doing wrong here? BTW: --toolset=mingw failed to find the mingw toolset, but when I build with gcc is seems to know what to do. Thanks, --John Femiani

Hi there, just a short question whether support for gcc 4.3 is planned for Boost 1.36 ? I'm seeing some strange compilation problems with my application (bost with boost 1.35 and the current trunk version) when I use gcc 4.3.1 (on an OpenSUSE 11 box). These are not there when using Boost 1.34.1 or Boost 1.35 with gcc 4.2.1 (on OpenSUSE 10.3). Best, Rüdiger

Hello, I am interested in supporting dynamic arrays in my C++ application. I read about STL, which somehow brought me to Boost C++... I see Boost C++ provides the Array library, which only seems to support static arrays... Does Boost C++ support dynamic arrays? Any example I could use to understand how this work? By any means, would this dynamic array library be thread safe? Thanks! Jean

[Boost.MultiIndex] Parameterizing multi_index_container on a template parameter

Hello, I am having problems using a multi_index_container in the context of a template class, and I am hoping someone here can help me. This is a condensed example: template<class T> struct C { typedef multi_index_container<T> SomeSet; SomeSet container; // I learned I need typename, since this is an implicit type typedef typename multi_index_container<T>::nth_index<0>::type SomeSetIndex; void f() { SomeSetIndex& index = container.get<0>(); } }; The typedef for SomeSetIndex did not compile. g++-4.2 reported (I stripped something from the message that I think is not relevant): error: non-template 'nth_index' used as template note: use 'multi_index_container<T, [stripped] >::template nth_index' to indicate that it is a template Now I (blindly) tried this declaration: typedef typename multi_index_container<T>::template nth_index<0>::type g++ gets past it, but now reports a syntax error in function f, when index gets initialised. Can someone please explain that first error message to me? Any help is appreciated. -J

I use mingw + msys to build boost as follows: 1) I installed MinGW Automated Installer, MingW GCC 4.3.0, and then MSYS via its installer. - this creates C:\MingW and C:\msys\1.0. The gcc-4.3.0 files are extraced into C:\mingw 2) I open the MSYS shell by running msys.bat 3) I fetch boost/trunk into my home directory using svn. 4) I run tools/jam/build_dist.sh to create bjam 5) I copy bjam.exe to /mingw/bin 6) from within the msys shell, I run bjam --toolset=gcc --layout=system --build-type=complete --prefix=/mingw When I am done, under /mingw/lib I have files with names like: boost_*.dll boost_*.lib libboost_*.lib In particular, the static libraries have a '.lib' suffix. I have googled and searched the boost site, and I can find issues related to mingw/etc but nobody else seems to have _this_ problem. Is there something I am just doing wrong here? I have used boost for some time on windows with msvc, but I am trying to install & use it with mingw-g++. I'm no gcc expert, but it seems that ld requires specific extensions for libraries, and bjam is not generating the right ones. In particular, under mingw, the flag -lboost_unit_test_framework Will match boost_unit_test_framework.lib (the import library for the dll) Or libboost_unit_test_framework.a (which does not exist after I run bjam!) I have been using boost with success since 1 year on the following systems: 1) cygwin built with cygwin gcc/g++, 2) win32 built with cygwin gcc/g++ with -mno-cygwin flag, 3) linux built with both gcc/g++ or intel compiler. I now want to use boost.threads and I have discovered that the library was not automatically built for system 2), i.e. win32. How can I force bjam to compile for the target win32 using windows threads instead of cygwin pthread? It seems that there are some bjam options like target-os and threadapi but I could not get any documentation for it. What is the list of possible target-os or threadapi values? Regards, F. I'm using Boost 1.35 with VC 9.0 on Windows XP. I just tried to link dynamically with Boost. So I added #define BOOST_DYN_LINK to the first line of each StdAfx.h file. When the app links, I get the error message: LINK : fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'libboost_serialization-vc90-mt-gd-1_35.lib' It is trying to link with the static libraries. So I decided to take a look in the Boost docs. Well, I could not find anything anywhere about BOOST_DYN_LINK. How do I link dynamically with Boost, using the auto-link mechanism? Is BOOST_DYN_LINK the right way? --Johan

Boost::Multi_array and reducing dimensions

I am trying to use boost::multi_array and want to create a view where I am lowering the number of dimensions, but I wish the dimension to be reduced to be decided at runtime. I have a vector of integers and this vector size is the same as the number of dimensions. If the vector [1] value is -1, then the first dimension will have all values (i.e. range ()), otherwise it will be a number indicating what slice to use. You can see in case 2 what I have tried and maybe what I am trying to do. Case 3 and 4 I am hard coding the dimensions where I want all values, which does work, but I'd like to get rid of the hard-codedness and make this more generic. Furthermore, I have a one dimensional array of values which I am "converting" to a boost::multi_array so I can slice into it with the views. I won't know the dimensions until I read the data. Is there a better more generic way of doing this? Something like a pointer to a N-dimensional structure where I can just use the view? Thanks in advance for any ideas! expected behaviours of bjam and boost?

Hi I'm trying to figure out what the roles of different files are in the bjam system. The basic problem is that I don't know what should "just work" and what I should expect to configure. Assuming that I've got a properly installed boost, should I expect to be able to link to e.g. boost.program_options as follows: exe my_exe : my_code.cpp /boost/program_options//program_options ; (if the above fails but the code is good, does that indicate a problem with the installation? The boost Jamroot file suggested in answer to my previous question seems to be intended to define the boost project.) I have a lot of libraries in /sw/include and /sw/lib. Is there an easy way to add them to my search path? For example, I have included in my site-config.jam file the following: project site-config : requirements <include>/sw/include ; Is here an equivalent for libraries? Fiddling with LD_LIBRARY_PATH or DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH seems to be asking for trouble. Also, I have to compile python modules with the following command line: bjam --libdir=/sw/lib/python2.5 --undefined=-Wl,-flat_namespace,- undefined,dynamic_lookup --compatibility_version=1.35.0 -- current_version=1.35.0 my_target (I have set using python ; in my site-config.) If I take out any of those options, the compile fails. Is it all really necessary though? Or should I define it in a config file somewhere? Thanks for your time. David

Compilation Issues with 1.34.1 on gcc 4.3.1 / OpenSUSE 11

Hi there, I recently posted a problem with the compilation of Boost 1.35 with gcc 4.3.1, on an OpenSUSE 11 box - the serialization library did not compile. I understand Robert's comments in a way that these problems will go away in 1.36 . I have thus in the meantime tried to use the current 1.36 trunk version, which fails in some other respects (which is fine, it is beta). OpenSUSE 11 comes with Boost 1.34.1 libraries installed, but does apparently not include the boost_system headers/library files. I have thus tried to revert to 1.34 by compiling my own Boost 1.34.1, but get the result: ...failed updating 180 targets... ...skipped 72 targets... ...updated 1263 targets... Not all Boost libraries built properly. Apart from a problem with bjam in OpenSUSE 10.3, which could be fixed thanks to comments on this list, Boost 1.34.1 compiled like a charm in the past. Now, with OpenSUSE 11 there does not seem to be any version of Boost that I can use. I have heard of similar issues with Gentoo, which also uses gcc 4.3.1, so I assume these are compiler-related problems. Apart from my own post on comp.lib.boost.user, however, there was no other reports on problems here. What am I missing ? [Boost.ASIO] and registering callbacks?

Hi, I don't quite understand how to register an async call back once with an IO service? Consider this model: * Server accepts connection * connection object *registers* it's read callback (to be executed whenever there is a read available from the underlying epoll) * connection object is doing some processing or conversing with the main server etc. * epoll (or IO service) says there is data to be read * call back gets executed * the processing resumes (based on the newly received data) I'm prettu sure that is normal. But how do I actually achieve this with ASIO? I mean, I have the main server that runs io_service::run() so it knows when there is data to be read on a socket - that socket is of course associated with this client connection object and it is this object that acts on the data (and may also send of course). However, using the async_read methods I appear to have to keep re-registering the callback in the actual callback: client::register_read_callback() { m_socket.async_read_some(buffer(m_inbound, p_max), boost::bind(&base_io::read_callback, shared_from_this(), placeholders::error, placeholders::bytes_transferred)); } client::read_callback(error_code &ec, size_t bytes) { // I have to call register_read_callback() again here! } client::start() // I get called when I am established between two endpoints { register_read_callback(); do_some_processing(); } client::do_some_processing() { } I'm trying to build a library that transparently buffers messages received from an endpoint. Hi, I'm encountering a libboost_system-vc80-mt-1_35.lib not found link error after recompiling boost using vc8 sp1. I have set BOOST_ALL_DYN_LINK and I link in the dll version of boost file system like so #pragma comment (lib, "boost_filesystem-vc80-mt-1_35.lib") My steps for building are. 1. Open VC console. 2. Run "bjam --build-type=complete". I tried "bjam --toolset=msvc" too 3. Compile is fine. Dlls and libs are created properly but the libboost_system-vc80-mt-1_35.lib is not in output folder. I noticed it's is built in the link static threading-multi portion but was copied to the output lib folder, so why is the dll version trying to link that? Robin

Boost support for consoles? (X360, PS3)

I am currently developping software for Windows. I'd like to use boost as I have used it before and liked it. However, in the near future, I expect to also develop for the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 consoles. Currently I make different projects when doing non portable Windows stuff. However, if boost can be used on the X360 and PS3, it could be really usefull as I could do, I suppose, pretty portable code between the 3 platforms with minimum changes. So my question is: Is Boost working on Xbox 360 and PlayStation3? Thanks! JFC

Hi, I have a compilation issue with time_iterator from date_time library First, I use this object in a struct, it worked fine typedef struct{ ... time_iterator _iter; ... }Timer; But when I needed to translate my struct into a class to have more functionality, I wasn't able to compile it : class Timer{ public: Timer(); Timer( time_iterator & ); ~Timer(); private: time_iterator _iter; }; ... bjam, mingw and cross-compiling

Hi, I find the bjam documentation and configuration files very frustrating... it seems to almost do what you want, but it doesn't finish the job and tell you how to actually do it correctly. I have been trying to cross-compile boost 1.35.0 for windows, on a linux host. The gcc.jam file mentions cross-compiling, but does not mention how to get it done. I almost got it to work with a user-config.jam: using gcc : mingw : /home/paul/mingw/bin/mingw32-g++ : <flavor>mingw32 <root>"/home/paul/mingwj/" ; and then hacking away at the gcc.jam file, which checks the os.system variable to decide how to link object files and use the -fPIC flag... around line 703: if [ os.on-windows ] change to... if [ modules.peek : UNIX ] to force it to use -mthreads instead of -pthreads if [ os.name ] != CYGWIN && [ os.name ] != NT change to if [ os.name ] = CYGWIN && [ os.name ] != NT to correct -fPIC it almost did the right thing, except for the extensions... i assume if i hack these lines, I'll get what i want... type.set-generated-target-suffix STATIC_LIB : <toolset>gcc <target-os>cygwin : a ; type.set-generated-target-suffix IMPORT_LIB : <toolset>gcc <target-os>cygwin : dll.a ; type.set-generated-target-prefix IMPORT_LIB : <toolset>gcc <target-os>cygwin : lib ; BUT then I'll have to fight to use the mingw32-ar and mingw32-windres and other programs. Hi I'm hoping this is a reasonable place to ask the question but please point me elsewhere otherwise. I'm trying and failing to build the Boost Python examples. In the directory boost-1_35/libs/python/example/tutorial I am running "bjam". It dies with the following errors: /sw/lib/boost-1_35/tools/build/v2/build/project.jam:266: in find- jamfile from module project error: Unable to load Jamfile. error: Could not find a Jamfile in directory '../../../..'. error: Attempted to find it with pattern '[Bb]uild.jam [Jj]amfile.v2 [Jj]amfile [Jj]amfile.jam'. Here's my configuration: * Intel Mac OS X, 10.5.3 * boost 1.35 * installation is via fink unstable, everything is up to date * I have made unrelated changes (I think) to site-config.jam, in my home directory * I have put the following into my user-config.jam: using darwin ; using python ; bjam --debug-configuration indicates that python is happily found. I'm inclined to suspect that the boost fink package is incorrectly or incompletely configured, but I can't figure out why bjam (correctly configured or not) would look for a Jamfile in that directory. All, What happens if the "async_receive_from" receives data that's larger than the buffer size that it was pasted. In Windows, if the data coming in the socket is larger than the buffer than the data is discarded. Is this how "async_receive_from" handles it? Ryan

I have this socket in another thread with the sole function of listening to the socket, putting it's data into a queue and then going back to listening on the socket. Is there a way to end the function early, while it's still waiting for data, so I can destroy the socket? Ryan

I thought about some lock-free queues of buffers that are assigned to caller and filled returned back to write. The actual write of the buffer can be performed in dedicated lower-priority thread. Run-time filtering like level or context is possible, but not implemented yet. The main idea can be seen in the 1st version in runtime_filtering.hpp. Again, runtime values are shared among threads, so they have to be protected in mt environment. I'm trying to get the GIL examples to compile: using gcc 4.3.0 on a Fedora 9 system with a recent download of boost 1_35 So far I have tried mandelbrot and x_gradient - "as is" in each case. I get compilation errors at lines 46 and 160 of bit_aligned_pixel_reference.hpp: At line 46 bit_aligned_pixel_reference.hpp changes meaning of bit_range from class boost::gil::bit_range<boost::gil::bit_aligned_reference<B,C,L,M>::bit_size, isMutable>" and at line 160 - bit_aligned_pixel_reference.hpp declaration for const boost::gil::bit_aligned_pixel_reference<B,C,L,M>::bit_size,isMutable>&boost::gil::bit_aligned_pixel_refernce<B,C,L,M>::bit_range( ) const Any suggestions as to why things are as expected? I was also getting errors in GIL algorithm.hpp - bad_cast is not a member of std. I "fixed" this by including boost/cast.hpp - this maybe (most likely) is the wrong way to go ? Many thanks Martin

recuring through / with boost filesystem

Wondering if someone could suggest how to skip Linux Kernel related filesystems (like proc, sysFS stuff, etc) when using boost::filesystem to recurse thru / I've tried this: if (boost::filesystem::is_regular(itr->status()) && !boost::filesystem::is_empty(itr->path()) &&!boost::filesystem::symbolic_link_exists(itr->path())) But I still get hung up on some files in proc and sys. My goal is to read every readable file... starting at root. Silly goal, I know. Just experimenting with boost::filesystem. Any tips of clue-by-fours are appreciated. BTW, I can do this and it works: // Skip leafs with certain names. Detecting cycles in graph

Hi, I want to use the BFS to detect cycles in a graph I constructed using bundled vertex properties. I want a feature that as soon as I detect a cycle, I can do some processing on the cycle path and then go back to look for other cycles in the main graph. In the generalized Gregorian date documentation it gives the year_month_day() function as returning a greg_ymd on the left side but a date::ymd_type on the right side. The right side is correct. In the same general Gregorian date documentation the right side example for day_of_week shows day() being used instead.

I used a minimum set of functions in date_time in my VC9 code, but it appears to pull in the date/time DLL by asking for libboost_date_time-vc90-mt-gd-1_35.lib. I can not see where this is being generated but from looking at boost_date_time-vc90-mt-gd-1_35.dll I doubt I am using the functionality in it. Does anybody know why it is required ?

float serialization problem?

Hi, I get an error "error: no matching function for call to ‘load_wrapper(boost::archive::xml_iarchive&, const float&, boost::serialization::is_wrapper<float>" for the code of classes (1) and (2). The compiler output is in (3). The error comes from line "ar & BOOST_SERIALIZATION_NVP(constValue);" If I comment the line "BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT(ConstCellValueStrategy)" the code compiles fine, but while running I get a "terminate called after throwing an instance of 'boost::archive::archive_exception' what(): unregistered class". Binary archive compatibility between 1_35_0 & 1_36_trunk...

Hello, I recently (yesterday) "upgraded" to 1_36_trunk version and have trouble with binary archives which are no more readable by the framework... I am using Visual Studio 2005 on Vista I have a Project object embedding a MeteoStation object.... The framework is able to load previous MeteoStation files saved in binary format... but is not able to loas a project object embedding a MeteoStation object (not a pointer or reference : whole object)... and the problem occurs while loading this MeteoStation object... on the Name field which is a std::string... (MeteoStation have a BOOST_SERIALIZATION_SPLIT_MEMBER() in case it does matter) The issue occurs in the <boost/archive/impl/basic_binary_iprimitive.ipp> line 91 template<class Archive, class Elem, class Tr> BOOST_ARCHIVE_OR_WARCHIVE_DECL(void) basic_binary_iprimitive<Archive, Elem, Tr>::load(std::string & s) {... where the load method which i I guess supposed to return the size of the object returns a pretty "exotic value" and mess-up the following... boost.interprocess shared memory & stability when a linked application terminates abnormally

What would happen when a linked application to a shared memory terminates abnormally while it is in the middle of memory allocation or any other structural changes? I guess it could corrupt the whole shared memory and also stability of the other linked applications. Some shared-memory based databases like TimesTen have a mechanism called MicroLogging to protect integrity of the shared memory. Here is a quote from Oracle TimesTen: "Oracle TimesTen protects its shared libraries against application process failures by means of its patented “MicroLogging” algorithm. Consequently, the abnormal termination of a linked application will not affect Oracle TimesTen IMDB's and even other related applications."

My class contains an array of bits, currently expressed as boost::array<bool, 512>. Will archives compact representations to multiple bits per serialized atom, or will they potentially waste a lot of space? Regardless of the answer, I was thinking of compacting the data myself. One way would be to compact the array into boost::array<unsigned char, CEIL(512 / CHAR_BIT)> and serialize that. But I've wondered what happens between systems with differing CHAR_BIT values. The solution I'm leaning towards is to create a text string like base-64 (pack every 6 bits together) and serialize that. By the way, a bit stream may not use all 512 bits and I'm also tracking (and serializing) a length attribute. I guess I should make sure that the length is serialized first. How do I serialize an arbitrary text string? How do I write the serialization routines knowing that one member (the bit array) is indirectly expressed (i.e. translate to/from the text string)? Should I use a text format (plain and/or XML) with a string-stream source/ sink so I can check by reading? Boost filesystem feature request

Hi Boost devs, I'm looking for a way to write programs with unit tests that don't hit the real filesystem, so there is no cleanup necessary in the event of a segfault, and so that tests run fast and set up is simple. Is the any chance of a future version of boost filesystem implementing the ability to do operations to a memory-based data structure that simulates a real filesystem. It would be especially useful if such a mock filesystem could be configured with failures that should occur to test error handling paths. It would be pretty vital that a test program could still use the regular boost filesystem for its own implementation to access the disk and that several separate filesystems could be mocked at the same time to test client-server application components within a single process. Boost.Python produces TypeError on OS X

AIX hardcodes paths shared libs with generated link command

Hi, I am having some problems linking on AIX with bjam using toolset=gcc. In my project I have one executable and one shared lib. Bjam generates the following linker command for the executable: "g++" -o <all-object-files> "../util/bin/gcc-4.2.4/debug/threading-multi/libspeedo_util.so" -lrt -g -Wl,-brtl -pthread -Wl,-blibpath:/usr/lib/:/speedo/lib:/usr/local/lib Now this results in an executable that does NOT look for libspeedo_util.so in any other directories than the relative path ../util/bin/gcc-4.2.4/debug/threading-multi! This is clearly not what I want. I found that if I link the executable manually like this (with -lspeedo_util and the corresponding -L) it works like expected: "g++" -L"../util/bin/gcc-4.2.4/debug/threading-multi" -o <all-object-files> -lspeedo_util -lrt -g -Wl,-brtl -pthread -Wl,-blibpath:/usr/lib/:/speedo/lib:/usr/local/lib So my guess is that the native AIX linker works different in this respect from the gcc linker on Linux. Is there an easy way to rewrite the linker command in gcc.jam with -L<path-to-lib> and -l<lib>? time_duration in Boost 1.35.0 has an is_negative() method. I need exactly the opposite: time_duration td; while (td.is_positive()) { // reduce td in some way } I am aware, that I can use td.ticks()>0, but since is_negative() already exists, it would be nice to have also the following methods for completeness and symmetry: bool time_duration::is_positive() const bool time_duration::is_zero() const So for all non special value time_duration instances one of the above methods would return true, the other two false. [statechart] history transitions make state-local-storage "un-cool"

Apologies if this has been discussed before, but I couldn't find any mention of it: I am currently using the history facility of boost::fsm. I've discovered that when I re-enter a state, X, via a history transition I don't actually re-enter the same instance of X that I was in before, but instead enter a newly constructed instance of X. I just checked the UML spec regarding history transitions and it says that "Any necessary entry actions are performed", so given that boost::fsm uses constructors to represent entry actions I guess a new instance of X has to be constructed to ensure UML compliance. My actual concern is the effect this has on the "coolness" of state-local-storage (see http://boost-sandbox.sourceforge.net/libs/statechart/doc/faq.html#Whats_so_…) It seems to me that state-local-storage, which I agree is generally cool, is particularly un-cool (and bug-inducing) in the presence of history transitions. I'm not sure what a good alternative is, but just thought I'd raise the discussion. cheers, mick PS: does the history facility display the same semantics in boost::statechart? [program_options] does collect_unrecognized work for config files?

I've got program_options working for a program that has a configuration file. Aside for some program options, the file contains one or more aliases that the user defines for a server/port value, and we don't know what the alias might be until they run the program; then we search for the alias and use its value. I seems like the collect_unrecognized function would be convenient for us, but I can't seem to make it work. I passed it the parsed_options.options member, and I can see the values in there, with the string_key set correctly, and the value set correctly, and the unregistered flag set to true. But the string array result is empty. My code looks something like this: parsed_options parsed = parse_config_file(ifs, options_desc, true); vector<string> unregistered = collect_unrecognized(parsed.options, exclude_positional); What would really be convenient would be a flag to allow the unrecognized entries to be added to the map, so then, when the user enters the alias, I could just retrieve that entry from the map. Should this work for a config file? If so, what might I be doing wrong? And if not, any suggestions for how I might get it to work, aside from just parsing the file again? boost shared_ptr and parent child relation ships

Dear all, maybe this an off-topic issue, because it does not directly relate to shared_ptr and is more related to life time of objects and their validity during construction and destruction. There were the following issues: 1) childs validity depends on availability of parent and vise versa 2) in ctor one can not use the shared_from_this() 3) in destructor of the child the parent shared_ptr was inaccesible ad 1) the doc's are clear: you can not make a cycle in shared_ptrs between parent -> child and child -> parent. Thus now we use a weak_ptr for child -> parent, but actually the child can not exist without parent. So if one shares a child through a shared_ptr, a hypothetical situation could exist that its parent get destroyed, but a child lifes on (in an invalid state due to missing parent) because a client has requested it. ad 2) this is quite unhandy, since I thought it would be handy to let the parent create the childs passing itself. I think this can only be solved by two way construction. This may well turn out to be a fundamental problem. Consider two classes A and B which are associated with each other. Object of class A is valid when it is valid itself and when its associated object of class B is valid. When A gets changed it is temporalily invalid. It updates first B, but if B asks services from A during that call, it asks an invalid object. Reversing the order may help, but A may have to update itself again after it calls B. For two related classes it can be overseen, but of course real life applications have 1000 or more classes. Btw to some extend Bertrand Meyer's book touches this subject, but he only mentions the problem within a class (with public and private members). ad 3) the destructor of the child needed the parent to call another class. However the parent was inaccessible because it was destroyed itself. This is of course also a fundamental problem because when an object gets destroyed not all of its members may be valid (the parent object is in an invalid state), so calling the parent at that time was questionable too. [Serialization] OpenSUSE 11.0 / g++ 4.3.1 issues

Hi there, when trying to compile Boost 1.35 on a vanilla OpenSUSE 11.0 system (which runs g++ 4.3.1), the serialization library fails to compile. The error messages are shown at the end of this mail. I did not find any corresponding reports on the mailing lists. Is this a known problem ? The serialization library seems to properly build in the current trunk version (as of June 26). Note, though, that I didn't test its functionality. The iostreams library fails to build in the trunk version, which I assume is due to the beta status. [program_options] call notify() twice?

My app has a configuration file. We don't know where it will be for sure, so we are planning to make the location of the file a commandline option. So, after reading the commandline option, we will want to parse the config file. Is this a resaonable and legal thing to do? We will need to call the map's notify() function twice, if I interpret it correctly. Thanks! I'll do that. As for the vector, I cannot use it cos I operate with SSE on large data structures in memory. Those are the real structures I want to serialize, so I cannot use a vector. Also none of the boost libraries fit my profile for operating on data, so i'll have to stay with the pure pointers. Anyways, thanks again :) Regards, MU. Help using graph library for bundled properties

I just started using the graph library..... I want to store a class I created called bbox as vertices of a graph. So, I just used the bundled properties mentioned as mentioned in the documentation. So here is a relevant portion of the code: vector<bbox> A; boost::adjacency_list<vecS, vecS, undirectedS, bbox> G; for (int i=0; i<A.size(); i++){ for(int j=i+1; j<A.size();j++{ add_edge(A[i], A[j], G); }} But bbox is not accepted as a valid vertex_descriptor for add_edge function. Have you seen my previous post on this matter? I suggested extracting the services that your children need to refer to a superclass. You can solve your observer pattern in the same way, and much more elegantly besides. This means the MyChild object is free to call Observer::unregister(). MyParent's call to stopNotification() makes sure Observer::unregister() does not call MyParent::notify() which may not be valid at this point. Unless I'm missing something important this should work perfectly: Moreover, your Observer pattern implementation is independent from your actual Parent or Child classes and can be reused. Basically, whenever you have a structure where a 'child' needs to acces a specific service from a 'parent', consider whether this service can be extracted into an independent super class or interface like I did above. Well there is one major case: if a parent is the observer of its child, the destructor of the child is the ideal candidate for unregistering. But in above case it leads to crashes. Although in this case the parent gets destroyed (in which the unregistering at the parent may be superfluous) there may be other observers for the child. All in all if I think about it, it can be solved (through a global register for instance), but not with above described proposal, which was attractive due to local character of the solution (child know only parents, maybe one class more). Then again it seems that c# and a gc wouldn't help in this case either. They break a cyclcic dependency, but it is forbidden to call object references in finalizers. Then again to get at that stage all observing objcts to the child had already give up their referneces, e.g soemthing like (in c++): Parent::~Parent() { std::for_each(m_vChilds.begin(), m_vChilds.begin(), boost::bind(&Parent::Notify, this, _1, eDelete); //type std::vector< boost::shared_ptr<Child> > m_vChilds.clear(); } etc. I know this sounds a little bit over the top, but we develop a pretty large application in our company, where you can not track all pointer of lifetime of object. Ideally a framework would solve lifetiem problems. Hi, I have been trying to use ublas with a user-defined numeric type and have been having problems with that--problems with resolving sqrt etc since the sqrt in ublas invokes std::sqrt. I wanted to use the policy and exception handling in the Math library with the ublas class, but I haven't been able to figure out the helper functions that would allow the use of my numeric types. Can this be done? Any suggestions would be appreciated. My next step would be to add units to the numeric values--assuming this can be done in the context of ublas. Is it possible to use Boost.Units and Boost.Ublas together? For example create a ublas vector of positions? What's the best approach for arithmetic operations, units, vectors, matrices, and user-defined exceptions using Boost? Thanks for your help, Pat

I've been trying to track down what the maximum number of arguments that can be added to boost::function<> is. I'm starting to believe that the maximum number is 10 arguments. Mixing versions of boost

Hi all, I'm using header-only boost libs in two static libraries that will be linked into an executable. No boost components are used in the interfaces of those libs, boost is only used in the implementation inside the libraries. Is it possible to mix versions of boost in those two static libraries? Will the linker complain, or will it just get confused and mess up the executable? The problem here is that one of those libraries is 'external', that is, I'm getting it compiled and with no source code (only .h for interface) TIA PS: I admit this is more a C++ linker question, but maybe someone out there has had to coexist with different versions of boost

[iostreams] first look surprises

Hi, I've looked at iostream library for the first time in a long while and had couple surprises waiting for me right at doorstep (I am boost 1.33.1 under vc 7.1 io=boost::iostream). 1) io::array_source( "Hello World!" ) doesn't compile 2) io::array_source( std::string( "Hello World!" ) ) doesn't compile 3) can't seem to find toupper and similar filters as part of the library 4) Given line filter like this: struct toupper_line_filter : io::line_filter { virtual std::string do_filter( const std::string& line ) { std::string result; result.reserve( line.size() ); for( std::string::size_type i = 0, size = line.size(); i < size; ++i ) result.push_back( std::toupper((unsigned char)line[i]) ); return result; } }; Following code seems to produce an error std::string result; io::filtering_ostream out; out.push( toupper_line_filter() ); out.push( io::back_inserter(result) ); out << "Hello World!"; BOOST_CHECK_EQUAL( result, "HELLO WORLD!\n" ); 5) my next attempt was to add flush before check - still the same result std::string result; io::filtering_ostream out; out.push( toupper_line_filter() ); out.push( io::back_inserter(result) ); out << "Hello World!"; out.flush() BOOST_CHECK_EQUAL( result, "HELLO WORLD!\n" ); It appears flush had no effect whatsoever. After long battle i found that reset seems to do the trick. But what if I do not want to destroy stream 6) out.sync() doesn't seems to compile, in spite of what docs say 7) stringstream can't be used at sink: std::stringstream buffer; io::filtering_ostream out; out.push( buffer ); fails to compile 8) library seems to have it's own mind about when to invoke my filter. Debugging shared_ptr usage

I've got a "leak" with shared_ptr. Basically, I'm pretty sure something is holding onto a reference via shared_ptr I don't want it to. Is there any sort of easy way to track the creation and deletion of shared_ptr's throughout my program to see who is creating shared_ptr's, when they're getting deleted and the reference count being decremented or incremented? Then I can see who is still holding the reference. Thanks, Mike Gibson

Serialization allocator

I'm interested in using Boost's serialization for a middleware library that receives allocators from the application that uses it. Is it possible to specify which allocators for the serialization library to uses? I can't override global new/delete -- the application reserves the right to do this. Cheers, - Stuart

Please advise how to sort and store sorted indices

I am using a uBlas vector and need to sort the values. I have another container with elements that are correlated with the uBlas vector. This container must be sorted with the uBlas vector. I want to make some compressed_pairs of the values of the vector and the original index in the vector. These pairs are sorted by the value, after which I can just look at the index of the value to know where it was originally. The problem is that this would require copying the elements of the ublas vector at least twice. Is there anyway I can sort the uBlas vector and keep track of the indices so I can then sort my container–without copying the data multiple times? boost::iostreams::copy() closes the sink and source?

Hi, While upgrading from boost 1.34.1 to boost 1.35.0 we encountered an issue with boost::iostreams. It seems that boost::iostreams::copy() closes its Source and Sink input parameters once it completes its copy. This seems to be a problem for us because copy() is not the last thing we want to do with our Sinks; we copy() into them but then also put more stuff in them (which now fails). This seems like a natural use case to me... Does anyone know why boost::iostreams::copy() feels the need to close the Source and Sink passed to it? It seems to me that it should not. The caller may or may not want them closed after the copy() and this behavior precludes using copy() as anything other than the last thing you want to do with a Sink. BTW, the apparent intended behavior of copy() is not different in this regard between 1.34.1 and 1.35.0. Rather, the trigger here was that our boost::iostreams::filtering_ostream derived classes are now "closable" by virtue of the "closable_tag" being added to the boost::iostreams::filtering_ostream base class' "categories". Once they became "closeable", copy()'s invocation of close() actually resulted in a close() on them instead of just a flush(). Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Unless I hear some rational for the current behavior I'm inclined to change copy() to not close its Source and Sink. For backwards compatibility, I suppose a "bool close = true" input parameter could be added. That would allow one to override the existing behavior without changing the current behavior on existing code. Although, it really doesn't seem natural to have something called "copy()" close its input parameters and I'm sure the unwary will get burned like us when subsequent uses of the Sink fail unexpectedly. Also, I'm not sure how this interacts with "const" inputs. The documentation implies that copy() also works with a const Source or const Sink, but I haven't tried that. It could not close a const Source or Sink, right? And it could not even write into a const Sink so I'm not sure what the purpose of that input combination would be. Linking error using boost::thread - start_thread undefined

Hi All I'm new to using Boost and have a (hopefully simple) linker problem. boost::asio connection timeout

Hello I was wonder if its possible to create synchronous behaviour regarding a connection attempt, i.e. Upper library layer calls : connect to host and waits for the connection to succeed or time out. asio can create the async connection attempt and timer and then run the ioservice to 'wait' on the async calls. which is fine in a simple senario where there are no other async calls running, ideally i'd like to be able to bring up a connection in a synchronous manner and then introduce the socket into an io_service which is processed by a pool of threads. Is it possible to either change the io_service a tcp socket uses, or retrieve the native type in a tcp socket and release the objects ownership of the type and assign this to a new object which uses the other io_service? i.e. Thread local io_service for setup library io_service which is processed by threadpool ?
