How can I get a reference from a boost smart pointer?

Hi, I have a pointer to a class: A* aPt; and I deference it to pass that as a reference void aFunction(A& aRef); and I call aFunction(*aPt); but if I switch to use boost smart pointer how can I de-reference it and call aFunction()? shared_ptr<A> aPt; I tried: aFunction(aPt); // does not compile aFunction(aPt->get()); // does not compile. Folks, Hopefully this is me having finger trouble, but I can't seem to get around the problem. Boost 1.35 installed using the binary installer, all the vc8 flavours installed. What happens is that I try to compile / link any of the unit test examples in Visual Studio 2005 Pro, for example the code at http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/test/example/unit_test_example_05.cpp I keep getting the LNK1561: entry point must be defined error. I know that it's looking for, and picking up, the libboost_unit_test_framework-vc80-mt-1_35.lib as if I remove the /LIBPATH from the link command options it compains that it cannot find that library. hello, i tried to implement something like gps with usage of bgl, but i made a mistake - i am storing graph::traits<>::vertex_desctriptor and graph_traits<>::edge_descritor in vertex/edge properties as a shortcut between data and the graph. this brings a heavy dependency of the property data on the chosen graph and i am wondering how to assign some numeric vertex/edge index into these properties (because edge_descriptor is in fact pair of vertices etc). my idea is to have adjacency list that is converted into compressed sparse row graph afterwards. btw: do you use pointers in your V/E properties? i tried to and now i quite regret it because of the serialization issues. many thanks for your attention, mojmir

Building Boost on 64bit with -fPIC

HI, I need to link in Boost into my shared library application. This works fine for 32bit, but is not working for 64bit. It appears that Boost is not getting built properly with -fPIC on 64bit and leads to following errors: /usr/bin/ld: vpi2.o: relocation R_X86_64_32 can not be used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC 'vpi2.o' has the boost .a files included within it using 'ld -r' Can someone help identify if this is a boost problem or gcc problem? I am using Boost 1.34.1, gcc 3.2.3 on RHEL4. Please let me know if any other detail is needed. Any help is highly appreciated. thanks Puneet

Hello, I have an issue with i686-apple-darwin9-gcc-4.0.1 (GCC) 4.0.1 (Apple Inc. build 5465) it seem to appear with the keyword "check" for example on files : detail/is_dereferencable.hpp detail/is_incrementable.hpp bzip2.hpp I have some compilation like : "error: declaration does not declare anything" wich disappears if i rename the check in both first files to check_ (everywhere in the file) and check_error in the third one... (and of course in the bzip2.cpp file too then) It does not happen on the very same code with gcc-4.3.0 (mingw version) nor vc8.0 does this renaming have possible side effects I have not seen (my code compiles, links, and seems to run with the modification...) I am trying to integrate a command-line program, that uses the BOOST UBLAS library, with a Windows Forms GUI. I get the following error when I attempt to compile the code: Error 1 error C3389: __declspec(dllexport) cannot be used with /clr:pure or /clr:safe C:\Program Files\boost\boost_1_35_0\boost\serialization\void_cast_fwd.hpp 26 Error 2 error C3395: 'boost::serialization::void_cast_register' : __declspec(dllexport) cannot be applied to a function with the __clrcall calling convention C:\Program Files\boost\boost_1_35_0\boost\serialization\void_cast_fwd.hpp 30 I am not linking the program to the Boost Serialization library. I realize there have already been discussions on the use of BOOST_DLLEXPORT in the serialization library. Unfortunately, it was not stated how to solve this problem.

I would need a Macro that expands to "return" if its argument is not void. I tried the following, but that obiously does not work: #define Return(type) \ BOOST_PP_EXPR_IF(BOOST_PP_NOT_EQUAL(type, void), return) I made a workaround by adding an integer value to my Array that defines the methods signature. But that is redundant. Is there a way to achieve the behaviour above?

multi threaded resource repository

I'm attempting to use boost thread's synchronization primitives to implement an efficient resource repository. The resource repository identifies immutable resources by an unique id. If the resource is cached it just returns a shared_ptr to the resource. If the resource is not yet loaded it does a potentially expensive construction on the resource stores it in the cache and then returns a shared_ptr to the resource. Resources can potentially request other resources from the repository during their construction so that case must be considered. The single-threaded version of this class is fairly straightforward but I don't have much experience in making things parallel so I'm struggling. I was hoping someone could offer suggestions on how to make an efficient multi threaded implementation. Hi Folks, I am using Boost.Serialization and Boost.Thread in my project. Because current Boost release had problems with GCC 4.3, I had to build my own Boost libraries from a svn checkout. Fortunately, with the help from "Getting Started Guide", I accomplished the mission with ease. The commands I used are: bjam --build-dir=/tmp/build-boost --toolset=gcc --build-type="release <threading>multi <link>static <runtime-link>static" stage bjam --build-dir=/tmp/build-boost --toolset=gcc --build-type="release <threading>multi <link>static <runtime-link>static" --prefix=/software/boost-20080710 install The above produced 64-bit libraries. My question is, how I can build 32-bit Boost libraries on the same machine? Does it take command line variables, such as CXXFLAGS=-m32? Thanks. Gehua Yang

I was wondering why in the archive library the input and output text streams are hardcoded with the boolalpha bit as unset, e.g. (is >> std::noboolalpha;)? Boost Python : Generic Function Call

Hi, I would like to find a way to call Python functions from C++ in a generic way. With Python you can use PyObject_CallObject( PyObject* pFun, PyObject* pyArg ) where pyArgs is a tuple, this allows the user to genericaly call Python functions assuming that you create the right tuple before calling PyObject_CallObject. With boost python i tried to do the same thing but i can't find a way to do it, using the call function or directly the () operator i always have to pass all the arguments. Hello, I'm receiving a compiler warning (MSVC8.0) that does not make sense to me, and I wonder if this might be a boost related issue: #include <vector> #include <functional> #include <boost/function.hpp> int main() { std::vector< std::size_t > sizes; std::vector< unsigned > data; boost::function< bool (unsigned, unsigned) > fn = std::greater< unsigned >(); fn( data.front(), 10 ); // NOTE: data is empty - will cause runtime error } The warning I get is: warning C4267: 'argument' : conversion from 'size_t' to 'unsigned int', possible loss of data referring to the last line in main(). This warning goes away if I do either of the following: - Comment out the std::vector< std::size_t > sizes - this one baffles me. - Use a 'naked' std::greater< unsigned >() instead of a boost::function< bool (unsigned, unsigned) >() object. I wonder if size_t is somehow redefined in boost in a way that might be causing me some trouble? Any help would be appreciated, thanks. Matt

Accessing vertices by their name

X-No-Archive: yes Hi all, I'm interested in adding edges to a graph whose vertices are labelled, and I would like to do this using the vertex NAMES instead of their indices (or "descriptors"). I know that add_edge uses vertex_descriptor, so I probably won't be able to achieve what I want directly, but I thought property maps would allow to easily recover the vertex_descriptor corresponding to a given label. Unfortunately, although I have spent a lot of time looking for that in the documentation, I didn't succeed in achieving my goal. My graph is declared as follows: typedef adjacency_list< vecS, vecS, undirectedS, property< vertex_name_t, std::string > > Graph; Graph G(0); I hoped that boost::property_map<Graph, vertex_name_t>::type vertex_names = get(vertex_name, G); would be exactly what I needed, but it seems that vertex_names can only be accessed using vertex descriptors and returns strings, which is exactly the opposite of what I need. [BGL] kolmogorov_max_flow: can't compile even the example

I'm trying to compile the example for kolmogorov_max_flow in Graph library, but it gives me an error (more precisely 1023K worth of errors...). Tried compiling on Cygwin, GCC 3.4.4, g++ -c -I/path/to/boost -O2 example.cpp. I don't really know how to look for the problem, I tried compiling also with gSTLfilt (filters STL errors), but couldn't find anything. Any ideas?

Avoiding a circular reference of boost::functions

Hello, I am using boost::functions to provide a simple event system, but have come across a problem. I have two classes that need to communicate with each other, CGUI and CEventHandler. Their instances are both shred_ptrs owned by a third class, CCore. The event handler returns its own member function, bound to this, which CCore duly passes to m_gui. Now both classes hold objects with refs to each other, and the program does a big memory dump when it is ended, on win32 with MSVC2005. I envisage this is because the shared_ptrs holding the instances of CGUI and CEvenHandler are not destructing at program close. Commenting out the line: m_guiTx = f; eliminates the issue. [serialization, boost 1.36] Changes in BOOST_IS_ABSTRACT

Hi there, I'm trying to prepare my application for the upcoming 1.36 Boost release and understand that there have been a number of substantial changes in the serialization code. I understand the serialization chapter of the 1.36 documentation in such a way that it is recommended to use BOOST_SERIALIZATION_ASSUME_ABSTRACT(T) for compilers that cannot cope with the 1.36 BOOST_IS_ABSTRACT(T) macro. gcc 4.3.1 seems to be one of the compilers that need this - it emits an error for BOOST_IS_ABSTRACT in 1.36 . There is no problem and it is working fine. Beside that, I need every instance of this class had a member intrusive list containing other Pages. Actually, it isn't clear to me that you CAN use shared_ptr without RTTI. The shared_ptr package (both boost and TR1) includes dynamic_pointer_cast and static_pointer_cast, which are RTTI-related functions. [GIL] Point concept

Hi, PointNDConcept is defined as having axis_value member functions. But the GIL code in the boost trunk doesn't comply with this requirement. A free axis_value function is just useless, because it can't be found by ADL when template parameters are passed explicitly. Also, member template axis doesn't model Metafunction. Hi, I'm creating a gui lib and am designing the basic drawing operations. I want the interface to be implementable as thin layers over most UIs (win32/gtk+/qt/etc). I wanted most of all have good interoperability with GIL. I found that it was actually very inconvenient defining windows as GIL views. A win32 window for example can't model a view without sacrificing reliability or efficiency. It also fixes operations as to be manipulations of pixels. But this definition for drawing operations lacks flexibility to create generic code to work with different units (not only pixels). This would allow a scalable GUI implementation where the units could be defined as millimeters and the drawing operations done with advanced anti-aliasing for example, without compromising straightforward implementations. So these drawing operations would actually define a concept. These operations could then be defined for GIL views, GUI windows and maybe more :). Do you think this could actually be useful? [random] Saving the state of the random number generator

If I'm using g++ then I can just use operator<< and operator>> to save and load the state of the random number generator. Unfortunately I also need to compile this code on MSVC++ 8.0. Using MSVC++ 8.0 BOOST_NO_MEMBER_TEMPLATE_FRIENDS is defined which removes those operators. Is there some way to do this without modifying mersenne_twister.hpp or doing something crazy like #define private public? Thanks, Jeffrey

Passing dynamic arguments with boost?

Hi, After programming with Python and switching back to C++, I am missing the flexibility of a scripted language. Specifically, I am annoyed at having to specify the arguments of a function at compile time. Is there anyway I can avoid specifying the exact arg structure? I thought boost might do this somehow? Say for example, I have a message handler function. I want to be able to send all sorts of arguments to the same function, which can then deduce what to do according to the data held in those args. I don't want to have to overload everything as I am passing these message handlers around using boost::function/boost::bind. Thanks

[serialization][portable-binary archive] Data not byte-swapped across architectures

Hello: I am attempting to use the boost serialization portable-binary archive. The 2 architectures I am working on are: 1. Intel on MS-Windows/Mac OS X 2. PowerPC on Mac OS X The version of portable-binary that I am using is from the Trunk. The attached sample code shows that an integer I serialize on PPC and then unserialize on Intel is not byte-swapped. And similarly, an integer I serialize on Intel is not byte-swapped on PPC. It does not appear to be a OS issue, because the data is unserialized properly from a MS-Windows Intel system to a Mac OS X Intel system, and vise versa. Another manifestation of this occurs when I serialize a large container, like a vector for example. The code has an exception because the size of the container is not byte-swapper. I can provide example code for this as well. This experience leads me to believe either: 1. The portable binary is not functioning properly with Mac OS X PPC or 2. I am not using the portable-binary archive properly, either configuration or code. It is not clear if I need to archive in a specific endian-ness and then manually detect the architecture and byte-swap if necessary. Or if all of that is handled automatically by the portable-binary archive. Advise on this issue would be greatly appreciated. Bulding with non-default GCC

bjam may be the best thing since sliced bread (some of the summaries of capabilities certainly make it sound interesting / valuable), but it's not a tool I know anything about. In an ordinary makefile, I could quickly substitute the right tools (gcc4 instead of gcc, g++4 instead of g++) and be on my way (without having to bother you). But I don't immediately see how to approach that with bjam. I had hopes it would auto-detect gcc4 since I found that string in a couple of the files in hopeful-looking contexts, but that has not happened. So -- how do I build Boost 1.35.0 on my Linux system (Centos 4.6) using a GCC 4 installed as /usr/bin/gcc4 on my system? [BGL] Extending own Graph type to work with BGL

Hi guys and girls, I've got an existing Graph structure, consisting of node and edge classes. The graph structure itself is implicit in the sense that every node contains a list of out edges, and edges know where they start from and go to. I'm using Qt's container classes for simplicity mostly, eg. a node has a QList of successors (QList<Edge*>), and all the nodes and edges get stored in a Network class using QHash<Node*> etc... I've been trying to extend this to work with the BGL, following the LEDA and SGB examples. As far as I know I can simply use the BGL functions on an instance of my own Network, ie. no need to recreate the graph. Is this correct? It would save a lot of cpu time since the network contains several thousand nodes and can be very dense. Thus I haven't implemented any add_node or add_edge functions, because I really only want to analyse the graph and not change anything. Some details of what I've got sofar: -vertex and edge descriptors are simply pointers corresponding to my own classes -vertex and edge iterators are simply typedefs of qhash::const_iterator or qlist::const_iterator -some source code at the bottom. So far so good. Though I've been stuck for 2 days trying to figure out how to get property maps to play nicely with my classes. I thought I'd be able to apply the bundle concept from the adjacency list to my own graph, but I'm not sure what exactly needs to be implemented to work. The idea is to create property maps directly from the members of my classes. Is this possible? What would I need to implement for something like weight_map(get(&Node::cost, Network)) to work? *** How about for member functions? ie. If cost were a function instead of a variable? *** I couldn't really figure out how the bundles are actually accessed. Though simply copying the get and put functions from the adjacency list class seems not to work... I think the crux of the matter really lies in figuring out how to access the pointers corresponding to nodes or edges with this T Bundle::* p that gets passed in. And what do I need to do when creating an exterior property map for storing temp data, for instance the distance map used by dijkstra? This is actually where compilation fails at the moment. Boost.Filesystem path string() confusion

Hello, I want to use the Boost.Filesystem library in my Win32 application. I've stumbled upon a problem which may very well be my misunderstanding of how to use the library but reading the documentation doesn't clear up my confusion. The user choses a path from a native UI and a bfs::path is constructed with the native name checker. This path needs to be persisted so I call the string() method which according to the documentation "Returns: The contents of m_name, formatted according to the rules of the generic path string grammar." I figured this string would be acceptable to the bfs::path constructor without specifying native because it's in the corrct grammar but I get an exception thrown. Hi all, This may seem like a silly question, but is someone able to point me to where in the Boost docs it tells me which files I need to #include to use Boost Threads? I'm looking at the docs here: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_35_0/doc/html/thread.html But the only #include directive I can find is for using boost::barrier. There's no mention of what to use for boost::mutex for instance, and even the example code that comes in the distribution doesn't say what to include to use boost::shared_mutex. So far I've only managed to find what I needed by recursively grepping the installed .hpp files, so I'm sure I'm missing something! Thanks, Adam.

[BGL] get_property does not seem to return a reference

Hi, I use an additional map as a graph property. The manual says get_property returns a reference: template <class GraphProperties, class GraphPropertyTag> const typename graph_property<adjacency_list, GraphPropertyTag>::type& get_property(const adjacency_list& g, GraphPropertyTag); so I would expect I could simply change the map but and forget about it. This does not work and I have to use set_property after my changes which means I have been working with a copy. Any ideas why this happens? Cheers, Torsten

Boost::asio segfault

Hi, I am running an asynchronous server, and an asynchronous client with asio. I wanted to get an understanding of how the buffering worked with asio, so I performed the following test: Created an asynchronous server that output an incrementing counter every 1ms. Created a asynchronous client that received the counter, but would pause for 1 second in the handler (I.e. my server is publishing information mush faster than the client could receive it) I found that the client would not miss out on any information, i.e. the recieved counter would only ever increment by the amount the server was incrementing by. I found that after sometime though, the server segfaults (possibly a buffer getting overrun??) So my question is, can anyone point me in the direction of information that will tell me how to adjust the buffer asio is using internally (if it is, I have looked in the doco but couldn't find anything)? Also, what gaurentees does asio provide for delivery of a message, if any? regards, campbell.

We are a team that develops a C/C++/Fortran/Binary compiler project called ROSE and we want to serialize the Abstract Syntax Tree (AST). This AST has 436 different custom class types and uses maps, sets, vectors, lists and hash maps. These classes have about 1229 different variables. For convenience reasons we wanted to serialize the AST using boost::serialize, but we have some compiler performance problems. Currently the compilation takes (GCC 4.1.2) -48 minutes to compile and link a program that takes seconds to compile without serialization -The resulting binary goes from <1MB to 122 MB in size. -The compilation uses 2 GB of RAM -The object file contains 98075 symbols with serialization and 41 without If the templates for loading the AST is not instantiated the instantiated templates for saving the AST takes about - 19 minutes to compile and link - The resulting binary goes from <1MB to 77MB - The compilation uses 1.1GB of RAM We have our own custom serialization mechanism that is not that easy to support, but it does not visibly increa My machine is a 2.66 Ghz Quad Core Xeon 5355, 16 GB RAM and 2 TB of striped storage. Is there any trick I can use to reduce the compilation time? When the compilation time is 48 minutes boost::serialization is unfortunately not an option for us although it is a great tool at runtime. thanks, Andreas

Hi, i've encountered a significant performance difference with boost_regex between linking first to it and linking last to it. I guess it is not a issue specific to boost_regex, but maybe someone can clarify that. I have created the following test files and tested with gcc-4.1 and gcc-4.3 on 64-bit linux and gcc-4.1.2 on 32-bit linux. Unresolved symbols to ~archive_pointer_oserializer using serialization

Hi, I am in the progress of upgrading a project from boost 1.34.0 to 1.35.0. As far as I can see no changes have been made to the Serialization library. But I am having trouble with it. -I build boost using ./configure and using the with-libraries option to built the serialization library, besides others as a shared library -I am using g++ 4.2.3 on Ubuntu 8.04 Using BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT_GUID I am making my classes known to the serialization library. For serialization I am using boost::archive::polymorphic_binary_oarchive. This all worked with 1.34.0. Now I am getting strange linker errors. I do have -lboost_serialization on the linker command. When I uncomment all BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT_GUID commands my compilation works. Hello, I would like to ask you about the best solution to initialize a boost::any instance with a C-string constant. Both the most legible (IMHO) possibilities fail: boost::any foo("foo"); boost::any bar; bar = "bar"; Compiler (MSVC 2008 in my case) complains about them: ...\boost\any.hpp(117) : error C2536: 'boost::any::holder<ValueType>::boost::any::holder<ValueType>::held' : cannot specify explicit initializer for arrays with [ ValueType=const char [4] ] ...\boost\any.hpp(134) : see declaration of 'boost::any::holder<ValueType>::held' with [ ValueType=const char [4] ] ...\boost\any.hpp(115) : while compiling class template member function 'boost::any::holder<ValueType>::holder(ValueType (&))' with [ ValueType=const char [4] ] ...\boost\any.hpp(41) : see reference to class template instantiation 'boost::any::holder<ValueType>' being compiled with [ ValueType=const char [4] ] ...\test.cpp(10) : see reference to function template instantiation 'boost::any::any<const char[4]>(ValueType (&))' being compiled with [ ValueType=const char [4] ] Obviously the string constant is considered of the type chat[4] which lacks CopyConstructible and Assignable requirements. Wrapping the constant in some expression which satisfies the requiremenst spoils the beauty of a simple code or brings unnecessary (for the constant handling) object: boost::any foo(static_cast<const char *>("foo")); boost::any foo(std::string("foo")); Such solutions were suggested in the thread http://lists.boost.org/Archives/boost/2003/01/43460.php but I was hoping there could be something better. I suppose there is no way to persuade the compiler to consider the constant to be const char *... Why has not been the following constructor added to boost::any? The array would make it there passing just one conversion: template<typename ValueType> any(const ValueType * value) : content(new holder<const ValueType *>(value)) {} Someone could say that that it is more error prone because it enables storing a pointer which can be invalid as soon as the boost::any instance leaves the scope but the error can be made anyway: boost::any foo(std::string("foo").c_str()); Another possibility would be to match the array type exactly but it has probably no benefit: template<typename ValueType> any(const ValueType value []) : content(new holder<const ValueType *>(value)) {} Do you see any problems with such constructors? [Boost.Serialization] Derived class de-serialization problem due to MSVC linker

Hi, I am trying to serialize a large set of objects in our library. I am using the Serialization library from version 1.33 with MSVC 2003. When I had all serialization code in the header files of the classes, linking took too much time and memory. Therefore I am now using explicit template instantiation of the serialize function (see below) in conjunction with precompiled headers for the Boost.Serialization. The problem is this: When I de-serialize a DerivedObject to a BaseObject-pointer (so that only the header of the BaseObject class is included) the linker seems to throw away the information from the explicit template instantiation of the DerivedObject in some cases. When I combine the explicit template instantiation and definition of serialize into one object for BaseObject and all DerivedObject, the linker keeps the registration information of the derived class (because MSVC uses object-level linking). Due to the coding standards in our institution this method was disapproved. Is there a way to make the linker keep the registration information of DerivedObject? Building boost with a non-default compiler?

Hi - I'm trying to build boost-1.35 on a Linux 2.4 machine where both gcc-2.95 (the default) and gcc-3.3 (the one I'd like to use) are installed, and I'm having a lot of problems. Perhaps you can help me figure out how to go forward? Attempt #1 -- use the configure script ======================================================================== To begin, I started by following the online instructions at http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_35_0/more/getting_started/unix-variants.html where it says (section 5.1) "Select your configuration options and invoke ./configure again...", so I selected the --with-toolset and --prefix options as follows: ------------------------------------ boost_1_35_0$ ./configure --with-toolset=gcc-3.3 --prefix=./BUILT Building Boost.Jam with toolset gcc-3.3... ./configure: ./bootstrap/jam0: No such file or directory tools/jam/src//bjam Detecting Python version... 2.2 Detecting Python root... /usr Unicode/ICU support for Boost.Regex?... not found. Generating Boost.Build configuration in user-config.jam... Generating Makefile... boost_1_35_0$ ------------------------------------ where I got the idea that the argument to --with-toolset should be gcc-3.3 from the description of toolsets in section 5.2.2 of the documentation which describes how to name toolsets for Boost.Build and states that If you have multiple versions of a particular compiler installed, you can append the version number to the toolset name, preceded by a hyphen, e.g. intel-9.0 or borland-5.4.3. Boost File System on Cygwin and native paths

Hi, I am having some troubles with Boost File System on Cygwin. It seems to use Posix file paths as native, but I need Windows paths since I am using Cygwin to develop an application for Windows. I compiled my own projects and the boost libraries on Cygwin using msvc-8.0. Do I need to pass some special compiler flag to tell the file system library that native is Windows, and not Cygwin/Posix? [assert] Control Flow Warnings with BOOST_ASSERT(false)

I've been using the BOOST_ASSERT macro. I like it because it can throw an exception rather than use the abort signal. And I can catch exceptions in automated unit-tests. However, I sometimes use assert(false) in locations that should be unreachable. And the compiler (well, GCC at least) understands this, because assert() calls abort() if the expression equals (evaluates to) false. If I use BOOST_ASSERT in this way, the compiler shows me various warnings about the flow of control. It does not know that my implementation of assertion_failed() throws an exception. To get rid of those warnings, I've changed BOOST_ASSERT for my personal use: #define BOOST_ASSERT(expr) { \ if (!(expr)) { \ ::boost::assertion_failed(#expr, BOOST_CURRENT_FUNCTION, \ __FILE__, __LINE__); \ abort(); \ } \ } It may not be the best way. For example, there may have been a reason to push everything into the ternary operator that I am not aware of. But it seems to work. I believe this functionality should be part of the library. Probably optional by defining another constant (BOOST_ENABLE_ASSERT_ABORT or somesuch). Are the developers aware of this problem? Do you think it will be solved in the library? [BGL] problems with depth_first_search

Hello list members, I tries to use 'depth_first_search' in a very simple manner but I get an weird compilation error. Problem with destructor being declared protected.

I am trying to build a helloworld program using bjam so that it can be imported into a python script. I get an error message that mentions a problem with the destructor being declared protected. Has anyone noticed this problem when building with Boost and Delta3D? C:\Program Files\boost\boost_1_35_0\boost/python/object/value_holder.hpp(67) : warning C4624: 'boost::python::objects::value_holder<Value>' : destructor could not be generated because a base class destructor is inaccessible I didn't get this error when building with the ide.

Is their any probleme with boost::thread and inherited functions ? Hello list members, I've a little question: Is it possible and if so, how is it possible, to randomly access a vertex or edge by its id (according to vertex_index or edge_index proprty map)?, i.e. calling 'vertices(graph)[id]'. My problem is that I wan't to access a vertex or edge in an unique and graph lifespan-wide manner without iterate over all vertices or edges. [BGL] direct access to compressed_sparse_row vectors?

In the header file I find: // private: non-portable, requires friend templates --cut-- std::vector<EdgeIndex> m_rowstart; std::vector<Vertex> m_column; I already have a graph stored as a BGL adjacency_list and now I want to use a 3rd-party library (SCOTCH) which takes its input also in the CSR format. As I can see from the docs, there is no standardized interface to retrieve the raw CSR representation. This way, I either have to rely on the above members not being private, or myself effectively duplicating the already existing code for constructing the CSR representation. Am I overlooking something?

non reentrant standard libc with mult-threads

I try to use the standard function "int system(const char*)" defined in <cstdlib> in parallel threads. We experience troubles under cygwin environment. Is there anything in boost or in the vault where I could find a thread-safe version of the system function? The list of non reentrant functions of the standard C library is pretty long. Boost.Asio async read/write callback weirdness/

I am using this as my main event loop (so I can call it within another event loop that does additional processing): wait () { m_io.run_one(); // Executes at most 1 m_io.reset(); // Apparently I must do this m_io.poll(); // Executes 0 or more handlers but doesn't block m_io.reset(); // Apparently I must do this } So that run_one blocks until at least 1 handler has been executed and then poll doesn't block but executes the rest... I register a callback with async_read and async_write. On the client side the write callback is executed and the buffer is emptied (I'm using asio::streambuf). However, on the receiving endpoint (the server) the io_service reports that handlers (the correct amount for a send/write from the client side - e.g. they tally) are ready or have been executed - but no callback is actually registered. Running wireshark (ethereal) whilst the send/recvs are supposed to be happening reports that no data is sent!! That is, until I quite the client app (which closes the socket, stops the io_service etc.) then wireshark reports all the data that should have already been sent! I am really confused!! The callbacks report that the data has been sent (or at least that is what I understand) and the callbacks are even executed at the other end (or rather they're not but the io_service reports that handlers have been executed!). Can anyone think of why this might be?? Compilation problems using boost::regex in Objective-C on OSX

I have installed and built Boost (1.35.0) on my Mac, and things are working beautifully when I create a "pure" C++ project. However, my intent is to use Boost in a project combined with Objective-C code. When I use the exact same code in a file called Test.mm and try to compile in XCode, I get compiler errors in cpp_regex_traits.hpp end perl_matcher_hpp: error: cannot find protocol declaration for "" - in line 799 of cpp_regex_traits error: expected unqualified-id before '=' token - in lines 259 and 265 of perl_matcher.hpp I am sure it is just some compiler flag I need to set somewhere, but at the moment I am stumped. Hi this message may have been sent twice as i got an error on my previous post, if so I apologize I'd like to build a boost graph from my own graph representation which is made of: std::vector<tNode*> => vertices std::set<std::pair<tNode*,tNode*> > => edges (oriented) tNode is a custom struct which contains various data and 2 integer attribtues for coordinates x,y I need to compute XY for each node in order to display them I have done that with another lib but as BGL seems more recent I d like to evaluate it. I'm not a boost expert neither a template guru => therefore I have some problems (even after having read lot of examples). I'd like to have an example to understand how BGL works. 1) how to build a boost representation of my own graph (where boost nodes ID would be integer cast of tNode* so that I can feed back my own nodes with XY) 2) how to run a layout algorithm on the boost representation (kawai or any other else). Boost.Threads for Fedora/Wine

Hi, I would like to use Boost.Thread in my 'winelib' application (a Linux executable that can also use Windows APIs via Wine). My application hosts, and shares threads with, 3rd party Windows DLL binaries. I've been told that to interact well those threads I must use the Windows threading APIs in my application. But by default Boost for Fedora (naturally) uses the pthread APIs. So I would need to use the Win32 variant of Boost.Thread. Any suggestions for how to use the Win32 thread APIs in Boost.Thread, but use the Linux variants of the rest of the libraries like Boost.Filesystem etc? I looked in to Boost.Build and bjam, but wasn't sure how to proceed. I got stuck trying to configure it to use winegcc or how to set BOOST_THREAD_PLATFORM_WIN32. Is that the right tack? [mpl] minimizing template nesting depth

I've got some code that makes heavy use of mpl. I developed and successfully testid it with msvc8.0 . Then I #included it in a WinForms app (meaning that the compiler is now running with one of the /clr options). The compiler stops with an error explaining that it has "run out of stack space". This could be simply a difference in compiler implementations, but I thought I remembered that mpl was implemented with some builtin recursion unrolling classes to mitigate deeply recursive typedef issues. If so, it occurred to me that maybe the macros mpl is depending on to trigger the level of recursion unrolling aren't supplied when msvc is compiling for CLI. I've perused the code a bit to try to find where it is setting such a thing, but haven't been successful. So I thought I'd post here in hopes of a quick answer. Does mpl implement such a thing? And if so, where is it? I'd like to see if it isn't getting used for cli compilation. Thanks! --Brian

Templated Class as Polymorphic Function Parameter

I apologize if this is a beginner question, but I can't find much on how something like this is supposed to work. I am using boost::iostreams to abstract away a couple of different methods of talking to our hardware devices. So I've created a device for each transport, each of which derive from device<bidirectional>; ip_device, serial_device, and usb_device. I then declare streams for each as stream<ip_device>, etc... Now that I have the streams, I have a class that communicates with the device and I would like to construct or initialize an object of that class with any one of the streams. I have yet to figure out how to form the constructor/function parameter to allow this. I've tried something like this, a stream of the base type of my devices: void init( stream< device<bidirectional> > str); I think something like this may work but I'm not sure if I want to template the function: template< typename T> void init(stream<T> str); A reference to any kind of discussion about using templates in such a way would help me in more than just this instance. Hi there, over the past few weeks I have rewritten the current opencv extension. Now there is a lot more functionality available as it was before. The following topics are covered: * converting colorspaces ( gray, rgb, rgba, xyz, hsv, hls, and lab ) * drawing primitives ( line, rectangles, circle, polyline, and text ) * edge detection ( sobel, laplace, canny, ... ) * resizing images( nearest neighbor, linear, area, and cubic ) * smoothing ( blur, gaussian, median, and bilateral ) As usual this extension is header only, but a user would need to make the opencv headers and libs available for compiling and linking. There are some tests that can be used for testing and for learning the rather simple interface. Only the vc8 compiler has been used so far and though I would like ask for some assistance for making the extension compilable with gcc, for instance. Hi, When I use multiple separator to tokenize a string with boost::char_separator<char> sep( ".,:;" ) as example, i'd like to know if there could be some to iterate parsed separators, just like we can iterate parsed tokens. In my case, I need to know, with a defined separators list, which are the most used in a user defined text. Thnx Carlos Alvarez

thread library name with mingw

I am building boost from cygwin for win32 using gcc -mno-cygwin. As I use the flag --layout=system, why do I obtain the following name for the boost-thread library: libboost_thread_win32-mt.a. I would expect libboost_thread-mt.a only? Of course this is a consequence of flag threadapi=win32 but why does not layout=system override this file name? In the last line, in equal_range() I've got an exception (access violation). Am I doing something wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated! MSVC ++ and Boost libraries

Is it possible to use the pre-built binaries with MSVC++ 2005 express edition? Would this be expected to fix the problem?

hi, sorry for the vague question, but i'm not entirely sure what the problem here is... i have a class hierarchy (has-a relationship) like this: fcgi_server_connection +-fcgi_application +-fcgi_cgi fcgi_server_connection has a tcp::socket 'server_socket'. fcgi_cgi has another tcp::socket, 'child_socket'. the program asynchronously reads messages from server_socket then writes them to child_socket, and reads messages from child_socket then writes them to server_socket. (there is some intermediate processing, but i don't think it affects the problem.) the problem occurs when deleting these connections. firstly, fcgi_server_connection is deleted. this deletes fcgi_application, which deletes fcgi_cgi. the sockets are member objects, so they are deleted as part of this. the actual problem is this: sometimes, after a socket is deleted, instead of oustanding read/write operations returning with asio::error::operation_aborted, they return with no error (error==0), but with socket.native() equal to -1. my understanding is that once the socket is deleted, all outstanding operations should be cancelled and operation_aborted should be returned. is this right? if so, what might cause the behaviour i'm seeing? and if not, what am i missing? thanks, - river.
