MPL and Fusion ADL problem

Hi, I wanted to know how large can be the "fixing" of MPL/Fusion ADL for function and/or meta-function with somehow common name (length,size etc) ? Not sure if I am alone but I feel clumsy to "hide" fusion types from template argument list just so my own size() function don't conflicts with boost one. Considering the task, if it' sdoable but long, I can help by doing some of it myself. I'm getting memory leaks when deserializing objects and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I'm using VC++ 2005. bundled graph property access?

Hi all, I've found very few references to the use of bundled properties for graph properties, as opposed to edge and vertex properties. Are these supported? I find that I can supply a bundled property type name for the adjacency_list constructor, but cannot use "get_property" to access individual field values. This type of syntax works: adjlist.m_property.fieldname = whatever; but this does not: get_property(adjlist, &graphproptype::fieldname) = whatever; although it seems like the second form would be proper (for data hiding, and also the documentation suggests this is right - at least for old-style internal properties). Problem including boost/shared_ptr.hpp

Hello Everyone, I have been trying to include boost/shared_ptr.hpp in a project I am working on, but the compiler keeps giving me the following errors: /usr/include/boost/shared_ptr.hpp:341: error: expected unqualified-id before string constant /usr/include/boost/shared_ptr.hpp:346: error: expected unqualified-id before string constant /usr/include/boost/shared_ptr.hpp:352: error: expected unqualified-id before string constant /usr/include/boost/shared_ptr.hpp:357: error: expected unqualified-id before string constant /usr/include/boost/shared_ptr.hpp:362: error: expected unqualified-id before string constant However, the most mind-boggling part is that if I include the same header file in a program by itself (i.e., outside my project) it compiles fine. " In your example, the socket was created but it's not "open" yet, (so it doesn't have a valid handle). Asio - Errors

Hi, I'm trying to call bind on a udp::socket separately from the udp::socket constructor. As in when i use the overloaded udp::socket constructor and pass in a local endpoint for it to do the bind on it work's fine. However when i only pass in the boost::asio::io_service and then call bind on the socket later with a local scope udp::endpoint it throws the following exception. First-chance exception at 0x76b442eb in Chatter.exe: Microsoft C++ exception: boost::system::system_error at memory location 0x0012e774.. I've got two questions, the first is does anyone have any idea of what this is, and the second is how do i get access to the socket error codes or states. As in if i knew what the error was i'd maybe be able to fix this myself and i appriciate that it's difficult without seeing the code itself to tell me what i'm doing wrong. Thanks, Tim.

Pool allocator with multiple dynamic libraries

Am I right in saying that when boost::pool_allocator is used in a Windows program consisting of several DLLs, there is no single shared pool but as many pools as the number of modules? So the usage of containers with boost::pool_allocator is not safe because of the allocator’s comparison operation (==), which is always returns true.

I understand why the types of the arguments to BOOST_CHECK_EQUAL (and BOOST_CHECK_PREDICATE, etc.) must have operator<< correctly defined. Otherwise, the failure message could not be properly printed. The type I want to check is vector<int>. But it seems not to be enough to simply define the following function: ostream& operator<<(ostream& out, const vector<int>& vec); The error message is long and very templatey, but the essence is: .../test_tools.hpp:298: error: no match for 'operator<<' in 'ostr << t' What more should I do to be able to use vector<int> in these tests? using boost::test to test private methods

I've searched a little bit, but having some difficulties finding good examples. So, I have a template class, in which I'm trying to test some private methods. Let's table the philosophical reasons for doing so, I'm just having difficulties setting up the mechanics of it. The best way I've seen, is to make a testing class a friend of class to be tested. My class to be tested is in a namespace, that the test cases are not members of. I'm running into all sorts of compiler errors. Does anyone have sample code about making this work. Strategies for separating the test code from the production code as much as possible? This is a first stab at automatic unit testing for me, so any assistance would be great. Thanks --dw

[detail] atomic_count operator++ returns different types

Why does the atomic_count ++ operator return a "long" for the win32,solaris and sync compilers, but returns "void" for all gcc compilers? The -- operator returns a "long" in all cases, so this would appear to be an annoying, anomalous behavior. But hopefully a rational explanation exists. Also, if it's the value of the ++ that is wanted, two threads could return the same value of this atomic counter, since another call is required to obtain it for the gcc case. Thank you, Doug

the boost xml serialization to a stringstream does not have an end tag.

Hi, When I xml serialize an object to a stringstream i get the following output <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes" ?> <!DOCTYPE boost_serialization> <boost_serialization signature="serialization::archive" version="3"> <bidResponse class_id="0" tracking_level="0" version="0"> <oppId>69</oppId> <delay>0</delay> <bid class_id="1" tracking_level="0" version="0"> <maxBid>5.3000002</maxBid> <minBid>5.3000002</minBid> <adBlob>adblob</adBlob> </bid> </bidResponse> As can be seen the end tag </boost_serialization> is missing. thi shappens even if I flush the stringstream. [numeric][conversion][docs] Questions about terms.

I just read the docs for numeric/conversion at http://tinyurl.com/5bflvn, and I have some questions. Basically I am getting confused about abstract values versus represented values, verses how they are represented (e.g. as fixed point or floating point numbers). 1) Is the density of scaled integers or fixed point types greater than one? The size of the numeric set is larger than the width, so it seams like the density would be greater than one. 2) Is the precision of long int really greater than the precision of short int? It is strange to me that precision seems to have a different meaning for integer than for "floating" types. 3) What is the difference between the numeric sets "Whole" and "Int"? They both represent the same values from the set of integers, which is a subset of real numbers. Does this mean that the _way_ the values are represented is important? 4) Is it true that a fixed point type would be classified as a 'floating' type? Also, are complex types numeric? Thanks, --John

hi all, i was running happily with boost 1.34.0 under Win32, using boost::program_options, boost_filesystem, and boost::thread. i decided to update to 1.35.0. I had to fix some broken code (e.g. boost::filesystem::filesystem_error does not have a member system_error() anymore) which was ok. Phoenix in 1.35.0

My understanding of the state of play with Phoenix is that the lovely Phoenix 2.0 is part of the not-yet-released Boost 1.36.0, and that the current release of Boost, 1.35.0 hosts Phoenix 1.2. Phoenix 2.0 has lovely documentation at http://spirit.sourceforge.net/dl_docs/phoenix-2/libs/spirit/phoenix/doc/htm… but the corresponding documentation for V1.2, at http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_35_0/libs/spirit/phoenix/index.html is buried inside the Spirit docs, and is not nearly as good as the v2.0 documentation. In particular the v1.2 docs are very quiet about specific include file paths, which have also changed significantly for v2.0. Is there anything I've missed in all this? ----------- Also looking through the documentation of Boost libraries in general, the quality varies widely. Am I correct in believing this is due to whether the various library authors have found time to write quality documentation? [Test] Glue for Visual Studio automated unit testing

Visual Studio 2008, in the pricier editions, has rich support for automated unit testing - of "managed" code units. Not much help with 4 million lines of native code! I've set up unit test projects within my overall solution. These build executables from source (using boost-test's default main() ) and run them using custom build step scripts. It's simple and it works but it does not tie into the test automation infrastructure. Test failures show up as build failures, and there's no direct support for things like test coverage analysis. It turns out, however, that if what you want to test has a COM or .NET interface, you can write a C# (or managed C++) test driver, reference the interface exported by the native code, and test away. But that doesn't help you unit test traditional libraries. What I'd like to do is to develop a .NET-visible wrapper for a boost-test unit test driver. This would allow us to author the actual tests in native C++ using boost-test, build and run the test suite as before if desired. We could, for instance, execute the test driver under the debugger to investigate a failure. But we could also drive the tests from a Visual Studio Test project. The simple thing to do would be to make each native test driver (with its entire suite of tests) one Studio-level test. It might be possible to expose the internal boost-test suite structure to the wrapper so the individual tests show up in the database; I'm not sure this is desirable and it would be more work. My main purpose in posting this note is to see if anybody out there is interested in working with me on this. Secondarily, I'd appreciate any advice from those more familiar with the guts of boost-test. What is the best place to hook in and what features does the exported interface (object model) need to expose? Because this effort targets special features found only in high-end versions of visual studio, it will not be of much interest to the majority of the readers of this list. Hi, I read the documentation and the header files, but I can't figure out what is the template type used in vecS, listS or setS. In my application, I need each vertex be unique and ordered so that I think about using setS. I use the bundled vertex property MyVertex to define my vertex class storage. The code perfectly compiles whereas I have not defined a comparison operator for MyVertex objects. It means that setS is not defined as setS<MyVertex>... What is the template type of setS? problem compiling ublas vector iterator with templates

I've seen info in various email-threads regarding thread safety when using xml archives. We had come across some assert conditions in multithreaded code, only to trace down that (BOOST_SPIRIT_THREADSAFE) was not defined during boost compilation. to fix, I modified the Jamfile.v2 for serialization: lib boost_serialization : $(SOURCES).cpp /boost/thread//boost_thread # needed to add this as a dep b/c we need to link threads when we define BOOST_SPIRIT_THREADSAFE : <define>BOOST_SPIRIT_THREADSAFE # needed to add this as a define <toolset>msvc:<cxxflags>/Gy <link>shared:<define>BOOST_SERIALIZATION_DYN_LINK=1 <conditional>@include-spirit ; I've also added BOOST_SPIRIT_THREADSAFE as a <define> in our code as well. Hello, I'm wondering if a binary archive generated on a 32 bits platform would be readable on a 64 bits one... My guess is no... because i am facing an issue i strongly suspect to come from there... Any clues ? I got a basic_string::resize exception evene before trying to call the serialize method... just doing : std::ifstream fichier(filename.c_str(),std::ios::binary); boost::archive::binary_iarchive archive(fichier); the second line causes the exception... [Serialization][STLport] Linking Error

Dear All, I am using Boost library version 1.34.1 in VC7.1 sp1. I don't know why I always fail with linking Boost Serialization and STLport library. But I can successfully build with Boost Serialization with VC7.1 build-in STL library. Do I need to modify my STLport library for Boost? I try STLport v5.1.5, v5.0.3, and v4.6.2. both of these version of STLport also fail in Linking process. Thank you. Kevin Tang. Linking... Boost 1.35 installed using the binary installer, all the vc8 flavours installed. What happens is that I try to compile / link any of the unit test examples in Visual Studio 2005 Pro, for example the code at http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/test/example/unit_test_example_05.cpp I keep getting the LNK1561: entry point must be defined error. I know that it's looking for, and picking up, the libboost_unit_test_framework-vc80-mt-1_35.lib as if I remove the /LIBPATH from the link command options it compains that it cannot find that library. Can't call boost::fusion::invoke with >= 7 args

Hi, First time poster. I found Boost over the weekend and have to say it's a great library! It's enabled me to do things in C++ I didn't think were possible before. I'm posting because I'm having a problem with boost::fusion::invoke. I'm using it to call a function with a list of predefined parameters. I found that if I have 6 or fewer parameters, everything compiles fine. If I have 7 or more parameters, it doesn't compile. I verified that it's not the parameters by removing the first 4 and leaving the last 5 (which was OK). Here's the code that I think is relevant: boost::fusion::invoke(func,args); Args is an iterator typename boost::mpl::begin< boost::function_types::parameter_types<Function> >::type func is a function pointer passed from C++ This is on Visual Studio 2005 using boost 1.35. I need at least 9 parameters. Thanks in advance! Problem with type traits

Hi, I'm trying to create my own struct that is compatible with boost::mpl::or_ as well as boost::enable_if. I find that using boost::mpl::or_ requires that my structure have a 'type' member, and enable_if looks for 'value'. Must I define both? What is the proper way to handle this? Below is my structure: template< typename t_type > struct is_sink { typedef typename boost::mpl::or_< vfx::io::is_device<t_type>, boost::is_same<t_type, vfx::io::Sink> > type; }; The above structure works perfectly fine with boost::mpl::or_, but does not work for boost::enable_if because it is looking for a 'value' member. [serialization] Problems with BOOST_IS_ABSTRACT, gcc 3.2.3 and Boost 1.35.0

Hi If I use gcc 3.2.3 (Linux) and Boost 1.35.0 to compile the example program at... http://lists.boost.org/boost-users/att-26574/test_serialize.cpp ...I get extensive compile errors which I can summarise as: <path>/boost_1_35_0/boost/serialization/export.hpp:125: `instantiate' is not a member of type `boost::archive::detail::ptr_serialization_support<boost::archive::text_iarchive, base>' These errors do not occur if I use either Boost 1.33.0 or Microsoft Visual Studio. The fact that the test program's base class is abstract seems to be central to the problem. The error is eliminated if I remove the BOOST_IS_ABSTRACT(base) statement from the test program. Doing so naturally causes other problems but these are in turn fixed by making "base" concrete i.e. by removing the =0 qualifier from base::get_id() and providing an implementation. It looks as if code in Boost 1.35.0 expects all classes to provide an instantiate method, even though the method is not in fact present on classes that have been marked as abstract. Is there any chance of a fix or work-around? Many Thanks Dan

I encountered this difficulty in the context of passing lambda functors, but on reflection I don't the lambda aspect particularly matters. Consider this templated function template <typename InputIterator, typename Predicate> inline bool all_if( InputIterator first, InputIterator last, Predicate predicate ) { return std :: find_if( first, last, std :: not1( predicate ) ) == last; } Obviously the intent is to enquire if all members of a range satisfy the predicate. Now, as is, this doesn't compile, because it needs ptr_fun() on the predicate, but then a couple of things come up. - ptr_fun( ) requires that it's argument is a pointer-to-function - I'd like my all_if( ) to permit functions or functors, including lambda functors How can this be done? Hi, This is probably a lame question, but I have some open issues I don't know how are handled in contemporary C++ style, for example with using boost coding convetions. I've been using the CamelCase naming convention from Java recently, where the issues below are non-issues actually. for example: - how do I create an instance of the same name as its type? in CamelCase: class Foo; Foo foo; in C++: class foo; foo foo; // won't compile what's the solution here? add some prefix to the instance's name? - how do I declare accessor functions to private members? in Java / CamelCase: class Foo { private int bar; public int getBar() { return bar; } }; in C++: class foo { private: int bar; public: int bar() const { return bar; } // won't compile }; should I put some prefix to the private member's name? Hello, I uploaded some youtube videos of a new visual editor for the Dataflow library. There are three examples, each using a different underlying framework (the visual editor code is generic): visually editing a Dataflow.Signals network (data flows instantly): * http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7a4HJ4zVPXc visually editing a Dataflow.Managed network (data flows on request): * http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwrnSjhJyf4 visually editing a BGL graph (this simple example lets you construct a directed graph and query the number of strongly connected components): * http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVLetAAnPrc The latter two examples use proof-of-concept implementations of alternate frameworks built on top of the generic framework that is part of the Dataflow library: Dataflow.Managed is unlike Dataflow.Signals in that doesn't couple data transfer with component invocation. In other words, if producer A is connected to consumer B, when A changes its value B will not be notified immediately. Instead, after any number of values in the network has changed, the network as a whole can be told to update (the network will then notify all components whose inputs have been modified, in the order of a topological sort of the components). Alternatively, components can be invoked individually, which gives them a chance to check their inputs / modify their outputs. The BGL support layer for the Dataflow library is an example of how something that is not strictly a dataflow thing (e.g., a graph) can still satisfy Dataflow concepts (there are Components (vertices) that can be connected), and be used with the framework (e.g., you get a GUI editor for free). If you're interested in playing with this: The new GUI uses GLV (http://mat.ucsb.edu/glv/) which is included with the dataflow library in the sandbox and integrated in the bjam build of the examples. As long as you have glut/freeglut available, it should build using gcc/darwin, MSVC8+, gcc/minGW, and if you are better than me at knowing which X libraries to link with and know how to manipulate a Jamfile, gcc/linux (any GCC version 4.x should work). Hello, I am trying to use this boost::graph implicit a-star search using boost 1.35.0 but have been having some difficulty. There seems to be a bug in the mutable_queue class where it will try to write to an index that is not valid: index_array[ tmp ] = c.size()-1; It seems someone else had posted an e-mail about this problem about four months ago. I checked CVS for any recent updates but this code hasn't been changed in the past 3 years. Anyways I got around this problem temporarily by adding some code to push indices onto the index_array until the code doesn't crash... not sure what the side effects of this would be though. Anyways after getting that working I find that my cost heuristic is never getting called! My implicit search basically goes off in the wrong direction to infinity. Anyways I've attached my test case. I've tried 2-3 different code samples that try to do this and none of them have worked so far! Chris

[multi_array] more on assignability

I realize this topic has been discussed before (I've seen at least a thread in 2006 and another in 2007), but I believe there is more to add. At issue is the decision that multi_array objects cannot be assigned [with the operator=() that is] unless the target is already the same size as the source. Further, there is no documented way to easily resize an existing array to the same size and range as some other array. Let me start with the first issue: others have already said before that making multi_array assignable would be a good thing. Ron disagrees on this point, and from what I gather his principal reason is that multi_array should have the same semantics as multi_array_ref etc. [please do correct me if I'm wrong here, I've only had a day to sort this out]. I am unsure why multi_array_ref etc cannot also have such an interface, but then I haven't used that class enough so my knowledge is very limited there. As far as my needs are concerned, a multi_array that cannot be assigned is next to useless. Allow me to elaborate: I am using multi_array as a replacement to my own (old) 2/3D containers, as recently I've had need for higher dimensions. I have classes containing array members, where the size of the arrays is dynamic through the object lifetime. So my class default constructor uses the array default constructor for its member objects, creating empty arrays. Eventually as my classes get used, the array members are updated accordingly, and get to have some non-zero size. Now the problem is that my classes need to be assignable, and the only way that can be achieved is if the array members are assignable; the alternative is to have to write a specific assignment operator for any of my classes that use arrays, resizing each member of the target before copying. Clearly that would involve a lot of extra effort. The second (admittedly minor) problem is that the only way to resize the target is unclean and the semantics are bound to the dimensionality: target.resize(boost::extents[source.shape()[0]][source.shape()[1]]); etc. I would rather have something like: target.resize(source.extents()); Ron had mentioned in 2007 that the lack of such an interface was an oversight, but there is still no solution. I am bringing up these issues again because: 1) I am not convinced there is any valid reason not to have multi_array assignable. I do not buy the performance issue, as this would only kick in if (a) assignment is within a performance-sensitive path and (b) the target is not already of the same size. Further, at the very least there could be a derived class (somewhat like what I document below) that allows such assignment. 2) It would be nice to have the clean resize interface as part of the multi_array class. As an interim solution for myself, I derived a new class from multi_array that allows assignment and does the resize automagically. I am copying the code below for public benefit. Notes: i) anyone is free to (re)use this code under the same license as multi_array; in particular, Ron, please do feel free to adapt and reuse within a future multi_array as you see fit. ii) while the interface provided is sufficient for the way I use the class, it certainly needs to be adapted to be completely generic. Now i'm even more sure the issue come from the 32 bits 64 bit point... See attached the HEX view of the same object kind serialized on a binary archive under a 32 bits and a 64 bits platform... Boost.Test: time to execute a unit test?

Hi, The time it takes to execute a unit tests is rarely showing up in the log. It shows up for some test cases but not others. Furthermore, the individual test cases for which the time does appear seem to change from run to run. Here is an example: For the first run of one of our tests we get (an excerpt only): ... Hi, I've downloaded the 1.35.0 source and built my own boost libraries in Redhat 5.1 with the intention of using the boost unit test framework. However, I noticed that the run_test parameter is not working. Has anyone experienced this and came up with a solution to resolve this issue? The build in windows is working fine. I've verified using gdb that the parameter value is being passed correctly to boost layer. any help will be appreciated. thanks Marc

Hello, I'm trying to use the filesystem libraries provided by Boost (1.35) through "boost/filesystem.hpp". I've installed Boost via macports and checked whether or not the installation is up to date, which it is. Moreover, I can use (some) other Boost libraries just fine, but not the abovementioned one. I'm using the following code to access several libraries: ----SNIP---- #include <boost/regex.hpp> #include <boost/signals.hpp> #include <boost/system/error_code.hpp> #include <boost/filesystem.hpp> ---/SNIP---- Including any of the first three libraries works just fine and results in a successful build. Boost.Filesystem path string() confusion

Hello, I want to use the Boost.Filesystem library in my Win32 application. I've stumbled upon a problem which may very well be my misunderstanding of how to use the library but reading the documentation doesn't clear up my confusion. The user choses a path from a native UI and a bfs::path is constructed with the native name checker. This path needs to be persisted so I call the string() method which according to the documentation "Returns: The contents of m_name, formatted according to the rules of the generic path string grammar." I figured this string would be acceptable to the bfs::path constructor without specifying native because it's in the corrct grammar but I get an exception thrown. Hello, I've got the following design: several functors ("Tasks"), when executed, "delegate" to a shared Processor object that performs some coordination between the tasks. The Processor runs the tasks at some stage, and wants to be notified by the task when it's over. However, I wouldn't like them to "know" each other. I even wouldn't like the Processor making assumptions about exact Task's "connection point" signature/name. For this purpose I want the Task to pass its "connection point" as a generic functor - so that the Processor would execute it to subscribe. However, I haven't managed to bind signal::connect. performance weirdness with AVL set

Hi, If I compile the attached test with and without compile optimizations with G++ 4.3.1 the non optimized version (using optimize_size<false>) is more than 10 times faster than the optimized one. I did use oprofile on the application where I use the avl set and the time is spent in the 'find' call. Can you please try to shed some light on this, I am completely stumped. Question on the Boost Preprocessor library

Hi all, This is my first email to this list; please point me out if I done anything wrong in this mail like the title format or etc... I am a newbie to the Boost library. I am really interesting on the usage of the Boost preprocessor library. I would like to archive 1 of the thing but I am not sure whether it is possible with Boost preprocessor library: Converting the binary number to hexadecimal or decimal value Eg: BIN2HEX(011) -> 0x3 or BIN2DEC(011) -> 3 BIN2HEX(1111) -> 0xf or BIN2DEC(1111) -> 15 I had read the C-Template-Metaprogramming-Concepts-Tools-and-Techniques-from-Boost-and- Beyond-C-in-Depth-Series which tell me how to archive that using template. But what I really want is to done it with the preprocessor without using any template which will not affect the run time but only the compile time. I know that I can use the loop and the arithmetic function from the Boost library but how do I get the binary number characters count, eg. COUNT(011) -> 3 or COUNT(0111) -> 4. Ok, the subject-line might be a bit confusing. :-) I have the following template function: template<class T> bool is(const string& str); Its implementation is not important. It checks if a string can be converted to type T by std::stringstream. I also have the following function: template <class T> function<bool (T)> neg(function<bool (T)> func) { return !bind(func, _1); } Which I use in the following way: BOOST_CHECK_PREDICATE( neg(is<int>), ("text") ); But the compiler (GCC 4.1.2) complains: error: no matching function for call to 'neg(<unresolved overloaded function type>)' What's the problem. Hi, I have a class like this: class A { private: B* b; public: A(); B& getB(); } A::A() { b = NULL; } B& A::getB() { if (b == NULL) { b = new B(); } return *b; } when I switch to use boost shared_ptr, i.e. switch from 'B* b' to 'shared_ptr b' in A's class definition. I don't need to do 'b= NULL' in A's constructor, right? But why this line won't compile "b = new B();" ? Visual Studio 2008: Link Errors in Debug Mode (__imp____wassert not found).

I am trying to use the circular_buffer template from Boost (version 1.35.0) with VS 2008 (msvc-9.0). I initially downloaded the compiled libraries from boostconsulting. However when I linked against them, I got a link error that (__imp___wassert not found )whenever I used an iterator. A search on the web revealed this problem seems to occur when the version of MSVC used to compile is different from the one used to link. I then decided to do a local compile using the basic bjam command with the toolset pointing to msvc-9.0. However I still get the same error; I have confirmed that VS is picking up boost libraries from the locally compiled location. The error does not happen in the Release mode. For the time being I am working around the problem by disabling assertion via a compile time flag which forces all boost asserts to (void)0. I will appreciate any thoughts on how to overcome this problem without disabling asserts. -Vikram

Copy-on-write implementation

I am looking for a simple way to implement copy-on-write classes. Several `copies' of an instantiation of such a class can coexist and share the same data in memory until someone changes their `copy' (calls a non-const member function). At that time, a deep copy is made and the change is only made in that one location. The deep copy is not needed, of course, if the instantiation has only one handle. All of this should be transparent to the user of the class. I think implementing such a class would be easier with a special class to inherit from and/or a useful set of macro's designed for this purpose. This seems like something that would (or should) exist in boost. Does boost provide something like this? If not, I will write it myself. But I'm still not sure how to approach it. I imagine shared_ptr would play a role, though. Any ideas? -- Michiel Helvensteijn

The problem with this solution is that it is time consuming, to open file for a key, i would like to use the boost serializeation to improve time preformance. What is realy required is some mechanism, to identify an instance according to its key and only than read its data. Thus reading only the required instnace (accordig to its key) and not also the previous data at the file, someting like seek. I hoped that "XML boost" can supply someting like that, but could not find how. I've searched the Boost documentation and mail archive, but I can't find an example for extracting a random variate from a Poisson distribution. What I want to do is similar to extracting a variate from a uniform distribution, such as the C++ rand() function, which returns a single random variate on the range [0, RAND_MAX]. Is there a way to do something similar using the Poisson distribution with a given mean? Dear colleagues, I have been testing the boost interprocess library for two months in my spare time... everything looked ok until now. Perhaps I am doing something wrong, so be patient. As you can see in the code, I am trying to use the offset_ptr within a class named OffsetPtrClass. However, if I try to allocate the int inside the OffsetPtrClass cnstructor I'll get a segmentation fault in the getter (either the MASTER or the SLAVE forked processes). Hello I want to use boost.program_options to parse commands for my program (console application) What I want to do is to be able to pass std::vector<std::string> of arguments or std::string (line) to parse_command_line(ac, av, desc); instead of char *argv, int argc. How is that possible? I've been looking at basic_command_line_parser class but couldnt figure out how it would be possible to do that, since converting string/vector of strings to array of char pointers would be really stupid. Hello! #define seq (int)(int) BOOST_PP_IF(1, BOOST_PP_SEQ_ENUM(seq), BOOST_PP_EMTPY) does not expand to what i want: it should be int, int . G++ gives the following error: test.cpp:20:1: macro "BOOST_PP_IIF" passed 4 arguments, but takes just 3 BOOST_PP_IIF which is logical, because SEQ_ENUM expands to int, int and so if gets 4 arguments. I tried to surround SEQ_ENUM with IDENTITY but it's the same problem. Only surrounding SEQ_ENUM with () works, but then I have the () in the code, which I do not want. How can I solve this problem? Basic Conversion to Boost Graph Library Data Structure

I know that what I'm asking is in the documentation, but I haven't been able to figure it out from just looking through it on a couple passes. I would like to convert my graph adjacency list to the BGL adjacency_list. Each node is represented with the Node data structure, and so is each edge. I also have "global" properties for the graph as a whole. So here are the three data structures my graph uses: GraphNode { int foo; double bar; } GraphEdge { double weight; bool fun; } GraphGlobals { string graphName; } How do I declare an adjacency_list that will uses these representations of the node, edge, and global parameters? Hi, I'm wondering if there is any facility to help define view in boost. There is view for static types http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_35_0/libs/fusion/doc/html/fusion/view.html. And there is a package to help define iterators http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_35_0/libs/iterator/doc/index.html. Hello, I have to make a library which provides a few classes with different implementation. This classes should have a common interface. Normally I would use derived classes from the common interface, but this classes should be really fast. linking problem for self registering dll ?

I am using VS2005 Professional to build an ATL dll that is self registered by the IDE. The project uses boost::regex so I needed to ad the directory containing libboost_regex-vc80-mt-gd-1_35.lib to Linker->Additional Include Directories to get it to compile. But now I am getting the following error at the self register stage, the dll registers fine when the boost::regex code is commented out or I use boost::xpressive instead. Project : error PRJ0050: Failed to register output. Please ensure you have the appropriate permissions to modify the registry. Please tell me how to fix TIA

[Thread] Trying to share a mutex between objects

Hi all, I'm having some trouble getting my head around Boost mutexes and how they work. Basically I have a handful of objects, and they all use a shared resource (a C-style function.) The function isn't thread-safe, so I want to protect it to ensure only one thread at a time can call it. My idea was to create a mutex for this (lock before the call, unlock after it), but I'm having trouble working out how to share the mutex between all the objects. The boost::mutex object seems like what I want, but it's non-copyable so I can't share it among multiple objects. I tried passing around references to the mutex instead, but this just triggers an assertion failure when I try to lock it. Should I be using boost::mutex for this? How would you normally serialise access among different objects like this? I'm finding the examples somewhat tricky to work from, as most of them use global variables and C-style functions for creating threads, which doesn't really fit with the C++ model of my program - I could just make the mutex a global variable but it doesn't seem like the cleanest solution to me. Any pointers would be much appreciated. Thanks, Adam.
