Dear all. I have some problems installing this fantastic libraries.. I have downloaded the svn version (revision 338) and the 0.9 relased version, but either haven't a setup.py file that work. In bindist/ folder, there is a setup.py file, that try to install all files in bin/* directory.. but this folder does not exists! in bindist folder exists only setup.py file. So.. how can I install python bindings for boost on my fedora 9 machine?? Thank you for advice! Boost Interprocess: Sharing memory among different users

Hello folks!I'm writing a software for the Linux environment. I'll need to share data between a daemon and a program running on the user's context. I chose to use shared memory because it's faster. I'm trying to use boost::interprocess::shared_memory_object but I'm facing a problem: When I access the shared memory in my test case running in the same user context, everything works fine. But when I access it using a program running in the current user when the shared memory was created as root, I get an access denied error. I searched in the documentation for a way to enable access to all users but I found nothing. Is there a way to do it? Thanks in advance. Silvio.

boost::asio::write() never returns

Hi, I use the Boost ASIO library to send TCP packets of about 500k every minute to a TCP server. I run my application on Windows XP, the server runs on a UNIX station. I use boost 1.35 While this works well initially, eventually after 4 or 5h the call to boost::asio::write() never returns, and locks my thread. No exception is generated. I checked the RAM resources on my computer when this happens and it looks like it's stable (I don't think there is any memory leak). If I were to speculaate on this, I woudl say it looks like the call suddently becomes blocking for some reason. this being either a TCP stack being full, or no answer from the server... Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Jean

Change from binary_oarchive to text_oarchive gives 'sizeof' compilation errors

Hi, in trying to debug a problem we are experiencing here with binary archives I tried switching to text archives to see if we get the same behaviour. However, now I can't even compile my code! threads in a DLL with callbacks

Hi, I've created a component that's distributed as a DLL. The user loads the DLL, calls various methods on it and gets some data back asyncronously via callbacks. Within the component there are several threads (using boost threads of course) any of which might call the callbacks. In all our sample code demonstrating how to create callbacks and call the methods we use boost mutexes to protect the callback functions and this works just fine. Some of our clients however don't want to dip their toes into boost, and want to use windows methods to protect the callbacks. For instance so far they've tried various methods such as CComAutoCriticalSection and EnterCriticalSection. They still have a crash which they're attributing to my DLL. I keep pushing them to at least try the boost mutex as in our sample code, but no luck so far. My question is; should the windows critical section protect the callbacks just as well as the boost mutexes, or does it require a boost mutex protection? (or do you require a code example to know the answer to this?) Nik

In EASTL http://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg21/docs/papers/2007/n2271.htmlthere is something like SSO (Small String Optimization) applied to std::vector (and other STL containers) [begin quote] "Fixed containers are fixed-size containers with their memory stored right within the container itself. Fixed containers allocate no dynamic memory and their memory tends to be cache-friendly due to its contiguity and proximity to the container's housekeeping data. The user declares the max container size as a template parameter, and can also specify that if the container overflows that an auxiliary dynamic allocator is used. template <typename T, size_t nodeCount, bool enableOverflow = true, typename Allocator overflowAllocator = EASTLAllocator> class fixed_vector { ... }; [end quote] I have tried a similar approach using some sort of fixed_buffer_with_overflow allocator, with no success. I'm not sure SSO is even possible just using an allocator with the standard containers, because I always end up with stateful allocators. So my question is if there is something similar already in boost. TIA

hello! i would like to specify a different shell for bjam on windows xp (namely sh.exe). i tried to place JAMSHELL = C:\\Programme\\A-Toolchain\\bin\\sh.exe -c % ; in my Jamroot file, though without success, the windows cmd "shell" gets called. background: i have to invoke a shell script (wx-config) to get my cxxflags like that local wx_cxxflags = [ SHELL "wx-config --cxxflags | tr -d '\\n'" ] ; regards, gerhard

This is normal for many compilers. ..../.... Is there any reason to not continue the installation ? best regards

The type_traits's is_same does not work in this case. [Range] Adapt 2-iterator container constructors for Range?

As I work with Boost.Range, I frequently want to call a method returning an iterator_range and, from that range, instantiate a standard container. [Filesystem] has_root_path()

Boost 1.33.1 used to support has_root_path() on directory_iterators. 1.36 seems to use a slightly different mechanism for directory_iterators, based on instantiating basic_directory_iterator, and I'm struggling to see what has happened to has_root_path(). It's there somewhere, but not accessible in quite the same way as it was. How do I express directory_iterator -> has_root_path() in 1.36.0 ? Thanks - Rob.

PDF Documentation

Hey, I've noticed that its mentioned in the docs that you can generate PDF documentation via boostbook, however it appears to fail violently when I try. I can build the HTML docs with little effort. Additionally, there are a number of links on the boost website to PDF versions of the docs that no longer exist and give 404 errors. Is PDF still a supported output format for the docs? Thanks. I am still in the middle of modifying the code to support UTF-16 with wchar_t, as far as I can tell now, it's quite well designed and easy to use, esp. with the utilities wrapping around the core parser. [filesystem] has_branch_path()

I'm upgrading the Boost release in use at work from 1.33.1 to 1.36.0, with surprisingly few issues actually, but I am stuck on one thing. There's a function in 1.33.1, has_branch_path(), for which I cannot see the equivalent functionality in 1.36. Part of my difficulty is that the 1.33.1 header declares but does not define the function, and I cannot see where the body code is! Any suggestions would be appreciated at this point. Thanks. - Rob.

Compiling the class_to_test in the library with protected methods and trying to access this methods out from the test_case_class by including the header and #define protected public, gives me a "symbol not found compiler error". :-/

[gil] new io extension

Hi there, I've been busy working on the next version of gil's IO extension. The last iteration was very slow to compile especially when reading or writing tiff images. This and other problems have been fixed. As a result compilation is a lot faster but also a lot more tiff formats can now be read or written. Please grab the latest from: http://gil-contributions.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/gil_2/boost/gil/extension… This download is a little bigger than to usual since there are test images included. Please see my original announcement below for documentation. The goal of this extension is to substitute the original io lib which is part of gil, and though shipped with boost. To do this a review is probably needed. I'll work on a proper documentation as the next step. Can anyone tell me where to find a tutorial for creating quickdoc? There is one problem I cannot fix and would like to ask the experts on this list. Please read the readme.txt in libs\gil\io_new\unit_test which explains the scenario. This problem has something to do with erroneously choosing the wrong functions by the compiler. The enable_if metafunction doesn't work correctly here. As usual any feedback is welcome. In this release I've added support for: * more image formats, most importantly bit_aligned images ( like 1bit images ), * reading of subimages like one row at a time for huge images, * reading image information, only. * having a unified interface for all sorts of devices, subimages, and converter objects. So far, png, jpeg, and tiff images are supported. In the not so distant future there will be bmp and pnm images added. The images libraries can be grabbed from: ftp://ftp.uu.net/graphics/jpeg/jpegsrc.v6b.tar.gz ( www.ijg.org isn't responding ) http://www.libpng.org/pub/png/libpng.html http://www.libtiff.org/ It's highly advised to built your own version of the image lib you need. I installed the GNU's binaries for Windows, but unfortunately, I only had problems with them. The library is still header-only. When using boost::filesystem's paths, of course, you add a dependency to the filesystem lib. The Read Interface ------------------------ Reading an image can be done in multiple ways depending on what your need is. Like the old io lib there are 4 different ways of reading images. As there are: * read_image: Read image, the right amount of memory will be allocated beforehand. The supplied image type needs to be compatible with actual image file. * read_view: Read image, the image's memory must be already allocated. The supplied image type needs to be compatible with actual image file. * read_and_convert_image: Same as read_image, but the user can specify an color converter. * read_and_convert_view: Same as read_view, but the user can specify an color converter. There is a new function for reading image information. Since every image format has it's own set of tags, the library defines seperate image_read_info<format_tag> structures. Please see, for instance, the jpeg_tags.hpp header. As for the function parameters the following sections in the same order. 1. String for file name ( std::string, std::wstring, char*, boost::filesystem::path ) OR devices ( FILE*, TIFF*, std::ifstream ) 2. Image or view type 3. Optional: Subimage definition ( top_left corner + dimensions ) 4. Optional: Color converter. This parameter is only valid for converting functions. The default parameter is gil's default_color_converter 5. Format Tag. Reading the image information only takes parameter 1 and 5. [boost] File_lock bad compilation - 1.35.0

I'm actually using boost 1.35.0 When I just include boost/interprocess/sync/file_lock.hpp in a very simple programm, then I have a list of error very surprising : "member function already defined or declared" So what, is file_lock unusable in 1.35 ? It was my only hope, other boost locks don't satisfy me. Hi, I am trying to install Boost 1.35.0_2 as it is a requirement of installing mkvToolnix. I have installed Boost using MacPorts. Hello, I'm a newbie in using boost. First : For programming I'm using Visual Studio 2008 with SP1 (german edition) and the target platform is Windows CE 6.0 with PXA270 (XScale, ARMVI) processor. And i'm using the STL delivered with Visual Studio. App will not run when linked to boost thread library

Hi I have added boost::threads to our mac application, which means that I have to build the boost thread library. I have manage to build the universal boost static and dynamic library. When I add the static library to the project, the project builds with no problems and the dynamic library produced it added to the application package. However as soon a I try to run the application, the application fails with the error that it cannot load the dynamic library. Is there a tool on the mac to determine why a dynamic library does not load. Does anyone know why boost is causing this problem. The dynamic library to built on 10.5 with 10.4 framework. Hi, I am working with the mulitcast receive example from http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_36_0/doc/html/boost_asio/example/multicast/…. The issue I am having is that every time I receive a packet it gets printed as expected but the receive handler is then called again and this time the if (!error) test fails. Printing the error always gives the message 'Success'. This seems a bit unusual and I am wondering if I there is a way to have the library not generate these success error messages or if I will have to handle getting a success error after every time I receive a packet? Linker errors with boost thread 1.36

Hello, I got some linker errors when I use the new boost thread library 1.36. together with the Visual Studio 2008. The linker error appears when I use the method create_thread: _guiThread =_threads.create_thread(gui_thread_starter); The error message is: error LNK2022: metadata operation failed (8013119F) : There is a typeref without the necessary suitable typedef If I comment this line the linker error wont appear. I linked the thread library dynamically to my library by using the definition: #ifndef BOOST_THREAD_USE_DLL #define BOOST_THREAD_USE_DLL #endif #ifndef BOOST_ALL_DYN_LINK #define BOOST_ALL_DYN_LINK #endif I compiled the library with the /clr option. boost.serialization throwing bad_alloc

When using a stringstream in binary mode along with the non-portable binary archive occasionally I see the serialization code throw bad_alloc when reconstructing an object. It appears to be when trying to serialize a derived stl map. We derive from std::map in our project to add a few more convenience methods and a simpler interface and I then added the following code to serialize this newly derived type: template<class Archive> void serialize(Archive &p_archiver, foobar::ResourceMap &p_map, const unsigned int version) { p_archiver & base_object<map<foobar::ResourceMap::key_type, foobar::ResourceMap::mapped_type> >(p_map); } I assume that is OK? It appears to work most of the time. Could it be that when that map is empty it encounters odd behaviour? I pass, to the archive constructor, the no_header flag - is this a problem? I haven't tried the text archivers yet. This is with Boost version 1.35 on an x86-64 Linux installation (gcc 4.1.2) . I get the same behaviour with and without optimisation (-O0 -g3 and -g0 -Os) and with an unlimited stack size and a limit of ~10M. Has anyone else seen similar behaviour. Using a hash function (SHA1) I can see that the same bytes that make up these messages (in our protocol classes are serialized in the payload of messages) are sent to and from the peers so I am pretty sure (though not 100% yet) it isn't due to any corrupt or incorrect data in the underlying stringstreams (the string streams are essentially made up of the message payload) themselves. Hello, In my project I have to create loggers dynamically and spread logging info over sevral files (each logger writes to its own file, each file covers some "thread" of activity). However, all the examples show global log definitions only, so probably dynamic creation of multiple loggers is a missuse of the library? Is it possible to route messages to different files by means of one single logger? Thanks.

I really hope to see your vote and your participation in the discussions on the Boost mailing lists! --------------------------------------------------- About the library: The Phoenix library enables FP techniques such as higher order functions, lambda (unnamed functions), currying (partial function application) and lazy evaluation in C++. The focus is more on usefulness and practicality than purity, elegance and strict adherence to FP principles. History: Phoenix is a mature library from years of use as a sub-project under Spirit where it serves its purpose for semantic action handling. Phoenix predates Lambda's acceptance into Boost, but not Lambda itself. When Lambda was reviewed, it was concluded that both libraries were to be merged, and work on it began, culminating in Phoenix V2, what you are seeing now (an interesting offshoot of this effort is Boost.Fusion. We needed a powerful tuple facility with algorithms to get the design right). Recently, Eric Niebler did a (fully compatible) port to proto making use of boost.typeof for result type deduction. Eric's port, while significant, will not be the subject of the review, but can be regarded as the future of Phoenix (Phoenix V3). boost::filesystem exception not caught on MacOS X

Hi, I have a strange problem that an exception thrown by a boost::filesystem directory_iterator is not caugth on MacOS X. Please consider the following code: ("const string &dir" is a parameter) bool retVal = true; try { directory_iterator i(dir); directory_iterator end; while (i != end) { // do something ++i; } } catch (...) { retVal = false; } While this works perfectly on Windows and Linux (the exception is caught fine), on MacOS I get the following: terminate called after throwing an instance of 'boost::filesystem::basic_filesystem_error<boost::filesystem::basic_path<std::string, boost::filesystem::path_traits> >' what(): boost::filesystem::basic_directory_iterator constructor Abort trap The program runs fine (withouth the trap) if I comment out the upper lines. I use the boost 1.34.0 lib built as universal binary on MacOS 10.5, according to the instructions at http://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/wiki/CMakeConfigAndBuild I link to the static non-debug mt version of boost_filesystem. Exceptions within my program are caught fine, just this boost exception is not caught. The program is also compiled as non-debug. Any help would be very much appreciated. Regards, Lothar

linking to boost thread exposes static initialisation order fiasco in ublas?

Hi This is a weird issue, and I'm by no means sure that my description is correct. It might be a newbie misunderstanding, but it is weird behaviour and I would appreciate any help in getting to the bottom of it. Here is a minimal example that exhibits the issue: ("zeromain.cpp") #include <boost/numeric/ublas/matrix_sparse.hpp> #include <boost/thread.hpp> int main (int argc, char * argv[]) { boost::numeric::ublas::coordinate_matrix<double> cm; cm.resize(3,3, false); return 0; } When compiled [with bjam release] and linked to libboost_thread it gives a "bus error". The backtrace is appended to this email. It works fine in debug mode. You can see that I have introduced boost.thread but not yet actually used the thread library in any way. If I take out either the include, or don't link to the lib, the bug goes away. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions! Details below. David Mac OS X 1.5.5, boost 1.36. Intel CPU. The boost libraries are in $DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH. Bug: serialization of STL collections on Linux x86-64.

In boost 1.35 on Linux on x86-64 an attempt to serialize any of the STL collections produces multiple definitions of implementation_level. Eventually I tracked these to the int64_t handling in collection_traits.hpp, where the following code appears: // determine if its necessary to handle (u)int64_t specifically // i.e. that its not a synonym for (unsigned) long // if there is no 64 bit int or if its the same as a long // we shouldn't define separate functions for int64 data types. #if defined(BOOST_NO_INT64_T) \ || (ULONG_MAX != 0xffffffff && ULONG_MAX == 18446744073709551615u) // 2**64 - 1 # define BOOST_NO_INTRINSIC_INT64_T #endif The bug is that the lengthy constant is just "u", and so will be compiler-truncated to unsigned int, 4 bytes on this platform, and so will fail to be equal to the 8-byte ULONG_MAX. Hi, when parsing RSS, there are many date formats. For example: Fri, 19 Sep 2008 16:49:00 EDT Sat, 20 Sep 2008 11:25:00 +0100 I would like to write a single function which takes care of parsing this stuff and returns a GMT time. The attached code can take care of the format with the exception of the time zone. From what I read in the documentation and various other sources I take it that time zones like EDT cannot be automatically handled by BoostTime. But I would assume that it is not a big deal to take care of something like +0100? Sadly, I have no idea how to do that? Thanks and regards, Roland

Hi, I'm wondering how you would handle the following case. Suppose I have a set of mathematical formulas that has both bigger case and lower case variables (such as both 'X' and 'x'). This situation is pretty common. In order to implement them in C++, I could either write bigger cases as well as lower cases in C++, which is not in consistence with the convention that you mention. Or I have to convert bigger cases to lower cases, which is also not easy to read, as it is different from the original mathematical form. Which approach would you prefer? I would prefer the former one. Therefore, the convention is not followed. offtopic: std C++ / STL / boost-friendly UI framework?

Hi, This is a bit of an offtopic question, but I wonder if there are any / if there will be any standard C++ / STL / boost friendly UI frameworks? When I look at UI libraries, like Qt or MS MFC, they all have their own constructs to generic concepts that are well (and better) covered in standard C++ / STL / boost. Like they have QArray, CArray, QFile, etc. etc. This is bad for a number of reasons. For one, one has to write a lot of adaptation code, like taking values from an STL iterator and filling a QArray with it, or the other way around. The second, much worse is that sloppy developers tend to stick with the UI-library specific constructs, and thus dig themselves into non-portable (in the case of MFC), or library- and license-specific (Qt which in GPL) code. And they are usually quite resistant to reasoning on using more generic and portable code for the same purpose. Thus I wonder - does anyone foresee a portable UI library which would be based on standard C++ / STL / boost? By this I mean that the generic constructs would be taken from here, and the UI library would really only contain things specific to UIs? Akos

Hi boost-users, I've mentioned that after calling output_test_stream.is_empty() the stream will be cleared. If you subsequently want to compare the stream with output_test_stream.is_equal(...) this doesn't work, because the stream is empty. Is this a bug or a feature? Can boost::interprocess be somehow used to implement Solaris door functionality ?

Hi I have been using Solaris DOORS in my project which is now being ported to Linux. I am extremely sorry if this is not the place to post this thread but all I am asking is " is there any boost library to make this thing possible ". I have downloaded boost 1.36 and there is this library called boost::interprocess . Can it in anyway be used to implement functioning similar to Solaris DOORS ? Here is what I want to do: Process 1 passes arguments to process to using a function say f1(arguments).. in Solaris it is called door_call. The function is executed in the process2 and then return values returned. When this happens, the process 1 returns. I don't need any ready made package etc to do this but I am just asking for suggestions as what would be the best way to implement this ? I just need some suggestions as boost is the place for expert library designers and I want to do it in the best possible way so as to learn. I am asking suggestions because I guess this thing would take time and I don't want to go in the wrong direction first and then get the right way. So that's why this thread. Thanks for your patience. Hello Sebastian and thank you for the follow up, I must precise that I have 2 builds of my projects: one linking to the multi threaded static runtime (/MT) and one linking to the multithreaded dynamic runtine (/MD). I defined BOOST_ALL_NO_LIB=1 to disable autolinking, and i am linking manually to libboost_filesystem-vc90-mt-s-1_36.lib libboost_program_options-vc90-mt-s-1_36.lib and libboost_system-vc90-mt-s-1_36.lib for the /MT variant, and to boost_filesystem-vc90-mt-1_36.lib, boost_program_options-vc90-mt-1_36.lib and boost_system-vc90-mt-1_36.lib for the /MD variant. For _both_ variants, I get stuck with following unresolved externals: __declspec(dllimport) public: void __thiscall boost::program_options::detail::cmdline::set_additional_parser(...) __declspec(dllimport) class boost::system::error_category const & __cdecl boost::system::get_generic_category(void) __declspec(dllimport) class boost::system::error_code boost::filesystem::detail::throws What is more suprising, is that for the dynamic version, the set_additional_parser export _does_ appear when I dumpbin /exports ./boost_program_options-vc90-mt-1_36.lib | grep set_additional_parser but the two other symbols do not appear in boost_system-vc90-mt-s-1_36.lib. I looked at your examples but think that you can abstract better. I don't think one should have to use sendmessage for example. Not that I do much .net dev, but I did find that winforms was the easiest ui framework I have seen. Umm, just out of interest, what *is* Wascana supposed to be? The site just calls it "Desktop Developer" and while it does mention Eclipse I'm not at all clear how it's related. I've jumped around the site but wasn't able to locate any explanation of what it really is. It does mention that it 'incorporates' (among other things) wxWidget and intends to 'incorporate' boost, but what is 'incorporate' supposed to mean? JRE is listed as well (but also gdb), so again I'm wondering what is this thing? As an aside, last I looked Eclipse was Java only, so why would Wascana be of help for C++ development when it's aimed at Eclipse (or so I understand it for now) Sorry if I'm being dumb, the issue interests me for private purposes and I've got to admit I'm a bit out of touch with UI development tools atm. [test] How to ignore a signal?

I've a test case which receives the SIGCHLD signal on Solaris. Boost.Test catches it and prints an error message although in that test case SIGCHLD s perfectly fine. How do I make Boost.Test ignore this signal? I found BOOST_NO_SIGNAL_HANDLING back in Boost.Test 1.33.1 but it doesn't seem to exist anymore in 1.36.0? Boris

Hi boost-users, I created a class and overload the <<-operator. Now I tried to test them by assigning an instance of the class to an ostringstream, but I get always the error: "fatal error in "EmptyVertex_output_stream": memory access violation occurred at address 0xcccccce0, while attempting to read inaccessible data" It's very curious, because assigning a string directly to the ostringstream, no error occurs. [boost-users][logging] limiting/truncation the output file

Hello, I know the above library is not a part of the boost yet, but probably some of you had an experience with it. I log to a text file. What I need is to ensure that the file doesn't exceed some maximal size. For the sake of simplicity, I'd like just to re-create the file when it grows to much. I guess I may not just delete it externally, as it's managed by the logger. So how can I tell the logger to delete the file? (Ideally, I'd like to "scroll" the data in the file like in a queue - first in first out, but I guess it's impossible, isn't it?) Thank you, Igor'.

Hi Sebastian and Ovanes, I am facing the same problems as you with linking to boost::program_options, and boost::system too. In all my win32 projects (I use msvc9.0), I define BOOST_DYN_LIB using a common property sheet. It compiles just fine with 1.36.0 but it does not link. I also specify BOOST_LIB_DIAGNOSTIC so that I can see what boost auto link is trying to do. I fixed it. I eventually found your posting and tried your suggestion attributing boost::program_options::arg with an additional __declspec(selectany) but either I did something wrong or things are different with msvc-8.0 it did not work for me. Instead I went down a different path and got rid of the global arg variable altogether. Since nothing seems to write into it and the value is always copied it seemed like a reasonable thing to do considering it causes so much grief with the linking. Once this was fixed I got another linker error: error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol "public: static unsigned int const boost::program_options::options_description::m_default_line_length" (?m_default_line_length@options_description@program_options@boost@@2IB) I found the solution to that one from this posting from Evert at http://archives.free.net.ph/message/20080815.085344.d72efb54.en.html . Once I changed the declaration of the class static const m_default_line_length to: BOOST_STATIC_CONSTANT (unsigned, m_default_line_length = 80); With these two changes in place all compiled and linked without a problem. Below I've inlined the patch of my changes against the original boost_1_36_0 source as reference for other people running into this issue. boost::multi_index help

I'm trying to use multi_index to store objects pointers. These objects have mainly 3 fields : - string name - int id - int block_id name & id are unique among all instances, but block_id can be the same for many instances. I want to distribute the object instances among a few blocks, so many instances can have block_id 0, many others block_id 1, and so on. I m using : foo_list_.get<block_id_>().find(1) to grab the wanted list. My problem is that in the result I have not only Foo instances from the block 1. This is what I get when I try to query for a given block_id : For block 5 : only objects with block_id == 5 For block 4 : objects with block_id == 4 and 5 For block 3 : objects with block_id == 3, 4 and 5 For block 2 : objects with block_id == 2, 3, 4 and 5 and so on. I d like to get only the objects with block_id = 4 when I query the multi_index object on its block_id index. I now wonder if what I want to do can be done with multi_index. Cross-Compile Boost for Embedded Linux

Hi everyone, Here is my question: what do I have to do to cross-compile boost with this compiler? Right now, the libraries and files associated with threading are the most important to me. I am starting to work with boost at the behest of a coworker. My goal is to get boost compiled for an embedded linux environment. My current setup includes my desktop running Ubuntu which also hosts the buildroot for the embedded linux environment. I have downloaded boost_1_36_0.tar.bz2 and have extracted it to /usr/local/boost_1_36_0/. For the sake of simplicity, let's say that the compiler for the embedded linux environment resides at .../staging_dir/bin/arm-linux-gcc-4.1.1 Thanks in advance for your help. On a boost thread a while ago, I saw some code to query for the existence of a member function of a class using SFINAE and BOOST_STATIC. I guess you could call it static reflection. Below is a code snippet that does not work using the aforementioned methods. The culprit is the using Base::operator() statement in the Derived class. Apparently the base class method void operator()(float u) is not part of the type of Derived. This was a shock to me, because you can call the overloaded method from the derived class. I'd appreciate any advice on how to check for the existence of member functions in this scenario. I fear it may be impossible. Hi, I am trying to dynamically link one of my *libraries* to boost program_options on windows with msvc-8.0 but linking fails due to a missing symbol. Quickly googling for this problem revealed no resolution to my problem, although it appears other people ran into this issue before. Did anyone resolve it or is everyone linking boost program_options statically? Is there a parameter to build without compiler version info in the target library name?

By default, the compiled library have a name like: libboost_thread-gcc41-mt.a but I don't want the gcc41 information in the name as I may need modify my makefile to switch to another environment with gcc4.3. So is there a parameter in bjam to suppress the compiler version info in target library name? Or how will you solve this kind of problem?

A very concrete question: I have map<pair<K1, V1>, pair<K2, V2>, ..> as input. How do I produce map<pair<K1, std::vector<V1> >, pair<K2, std::vector<V2>, .. > on output? I do not see an equivalent of LISPs MAPCAR in the list of algorithms.. Is this something that should be done by combining fold and push_back algorithms? If so, I'm currently in the dark on how to do it (no example for the fold metafunction algorithm) === Few more questions now that I'm already posting: - what is the difference between accumulate and fold? - what is the purpose of for_each metafunction when the docs say that it always returns void? Problem with iterator_facade

Hi, I have the following iterator_facade class: class PassIterator : public boost::iterator_facade< PassIterator, Pass, boost::forward_traversal_tag > { public: PassIterator(); PassIterator( Effect const& effect ); private: void increment(); Pass& dereference() const; Pass m_pass; friend class boost::iterator_core_access; }; Note how my Pass object is stored by-value in my PassIterator class. When I attempt to compile this class, it fails because dereference() is const and it is trying to return a reference to a const member. However, if I make dereference() non-const, it still fails because the base class is calling into PassIterator::dereference() through a const member function as well, so dereference() *must* be const in order to be callable by boost. How can I overcome this issue? const_cast? mutable? Thanks.

Hello, boost-users, what I am trying to accomplish is a generic collection of N objects of type Type. I need for the N objects to be tightly packed and I would like the collection to be constructible in this way: uniform_vector<3, float> my_point(1.0f, 2.1f, 3.2f); I'm very new to the template (meta)programming scene and I would like to get better at it, so any advice you could give that would be instructive in that regard would be much appreciated. The code below is what I have come up with. Question 1: Am I reinventing the wheel at all? In other words is there something I can just typedef to get this functionality? Question 2: If not, how could I generalize this? Is there a template metaprogramming way? Merging sorted iterators?

What I would like to have is one iterator which allows me to iterate over the combined sorted input (of course, the result should be sorted, too). [filesystem] Strange problems on Cygwin with 1.36.0

According to http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_36_0/libs/filesystem/doc/index.htm#Cgywin Boost.Filesystem seems to be supported on Cygwin. However with the latest version 1.36.0 (which I've built with BOOST_POSIX_API defined) I don't seem to get any Boost.Filesystem function to work on Cygwin. I'm currently running some test cases and had to modify them for Cygwin like this: #if defined(__CYGWIN__) BOOST_CHECK(a == b); #else BOOST_CHECK(bfs::equivalent(a, b)); #endif If a and b contain the very same path you would expect both a == b and boost::filesystem::equivalent() to return true. However on Cygwin boost::filesystem::equivalent() returns false. If I use BOOST_CHECK(bfs::equivalent(a, b)) on Cygwin I get this error: unknown location(0): fatal error in "test_find_param": std::runtime_error: boost::filesystem::equivalent: No such file or directory: "\home\Boris\boost_1_36_0\libs\process\test\..\..\..\bin.v2\libs\process\test\gcc-3.4.4\debug\link-static\runtime-link-static\helpers.exe", "\home\Boris\boost_1_36_0\libs\process\test\..\..\..\bin.v2\libs\process\test\gcc-3.4.4\debug\link-static\runtime-link-static\helpers.exe" Both strings are exactly the same and contain valid Cygwin paths. [smart_ptr] Problem with circular reference detection

I am trying to detect circular references using the find_unreachable_objects function in sp_collector.cpp. However, it reports false positives in the simple case of one object being owned by another. Unreachable object at 0036BA60, 12 bytes long. Clearly this is incorrect as there are no circular references. Looking at the code, there is what appears to be a typo at line 124: std::cout << "... " << m2.size() << " objects in open.\n"; should be: std::cout << "... " << open.size() << " objects in open.\n"; But the real problem seems to be at line 121: if(p->use_count() != i->second) open.push_back(p); I'm not entirely sure what's going on in this section of code, but it ends up determining (incorrectly) that the "X" object is unreachable. Boost Serialize and derived classes

I can't seem to figure out if what I want is possible. I am using the Boost Serialization library to save the state of my program. I have a manager-type class which holds onto pointers of a base class. The Boost Serialization website has a lot to say about base and derived classes. In a tutorial they show one way to deal with them. The derived objects are created and passed back to my manager class through the base pointer. One option I was considering was that when plugins register with the program, they would have to also register the derived class names with the archive. How this would actually be implemented, I have no idea. Can an archive object be created independently from the Serialization library, modified and then sent back to Serialization? Question: How to implement a reader-writer lock with quick response to writer? I am using boost1.35.0. I know 1.36.0 is available, but I failed to build regex in 1.36.0 with VC8. I have the following requirements: 1.There are several reader threads and a single writer thread. The writer thread will update shared data periodically. And reader threads may read shared data at any time. 2.As long as writer thread try to update data, all reader thread should be blocked as soon as possible. 3.And reader thread should be blocked during data updating. 4.But reader threads can't be interrupted when they are reading. (i.e. all upcoming reader threads should be blocked, but writer still need wait till the last reader thread in reading finished.) How to implement above scenario with quick response to writer thread? Problem serializing unsigned int via save/load

Is there a trick or known bug with serializing an unsigned int via the split free functions? I have a structure that contains an unsigned int, and if I serialize with the free serialize function it works as it should. However, if I split the serialization into save/load I get: boost_1_36_0/boost/archive/detail/iserializer.hpp:541: error: conversion from `boost::serialization::is_wrapper<unsigned int>' to non-scalar type `mpl_::bool_< true>' requested Here's my structure and the two pieces of serialization code: typedef struct CCSTRUCT { unsigned int numRtp; } CCSTRUCT; Serialization #1 (works): template<class Archive> void serialize(Archive & ar, CCSTRUCT& it, const unsigned int version) { ar & it.numRtp; } Serialization #2 (doesn't work): BOOST_SERIALIZATION_SPLIT_FREE(CCSTRUCT) template<class Archive> void save(Archive & ar, const CCSTRUCT& d, unsigned int /* version */) { ar << d.numRtp; } template<class Archive> void load(Archive & ar, const CCSTRUCT& d, unsigned int /* version */) { ar >> d.numRtp; } I need to split the serialization because there are other elements in the structure that can't be handled in serialize(), so I would really appreciate some help if anyone has any ideas. boost::signal performance in boost 1.36 and VS2005

Hello, I have made now a small test and I don't know if I make something wrong. I have the following performance comparsion between a boost::function and a boost::signal. Okay, I know that boost::signal has a lot of more functionality and for that it is for sure slower than boost::function. But 100times slower? May be I do something wrong? On my pc I have for boost::function a runtime of 728ms and for boost::signals a runtime of 64128ms There is one slot used for signals. [serialization] Crashes after termination of main()

Hi there, I am consistenty getting crashes in line 80 of the file /opt/boost136/include/boost-1_36/boost/serialization/extended_type_info_typeid.hpp , when my program exits. This is the destructor of class extended_type_info_typeid : ~extended_type_info_typeid(){ type_unregister(); } Any idea of what this is ? I'm using several singletons in my program, which according to their nature, only terminate once main() has finished. They refer to several objects which can, in other contexts, also be serialized. This specific program, however, does not make use of this option. I am pretty sure that the singletons do not refer to each other (any more) as, while searching for the problem, I have redesigned larger portions so that they don't. I'm using Boost 1.36 on OpenSUSE 11 / 64 bit (g++ 4.3.1). Thanks in any case and best regards, Ruediger

Hi, Is there a way I can use std::for_each() on a boost::ptr_map and have the functor object be given the *value* of each item iterated instead of a key/value pair like it does with std::map? Help is appreciated, thank you.

Hi, I've written my own archive, which works fine until I try serialising a boost::shared_ptr<X>, in which case I get: undefined reference to `boost::archive::detail::archive_pointer_oserializer<boost::archive::boost_oarchive>::~archive_pointer_oserializer(). (boost::archive::boost_oarchive is my archive class, in case this causes confusion). I'm on gcc4.1.2, ceontos4 x86_64. I'm linking to libboost_serialization-gcc41-mt-1_35.so also. I've hit a bit of a brick wall here so any help would be greatly appreciated. Error while using asio and xpressive together

I get compiler error with the following code: #include <boost/asio.hpp> #include <boost/xpressive/xpressive.hpp> int main(int argc, char*argv[]) {} If I flip the order of #include, code compiles fine. I am using gcc 4.1.2 compiler on linux. Does this need to be fixed in asio ? thx Rohit
