Boost, MSVC 8 and StlPort

Hello, I installed Boost via the BoostPro 1.36.0 Installer and trying to use the Regex package. Unfortunately, it does not want to link. I am using MSVC 8 (Visual Studio 2005) with StlPort instead of the native libraries. Boost tries to link libboost_regex-vc80-mt-gdp-1_36.lib which is not included in the distribution. I have bjam but I don't know what parameters to use so I couldn't build the debug library. Please help! Thank you, Alex.

Hi, I stumbled over an inconsistency in the Boost::DateTime library. I wanted to create a STL map of posix time zones. Some design details about boost::asio timer ?

Hi I am implementing an asynchronous timer, would like to build it similar to the one included in the asio library. I am using a timer wheel implementation i.e a fixed size array of double linked lists. The timer wheel implementation is quite efficient as insertion is O(1), deletion of timer is O(1) and firing of timer is also O(1). The only drawback is that the time registered should not be greater than the size of 1 rotation of the wheel. typedef list<Timer> ListOfTimers ListOfTimers myTimerobj(10000) ( with 100 ticks per second this would give an accuracy of 10ms ) The thread in the timer delegates the execution of the callbacks to another thread ( take from a thread pool ). >From what I have read from the code of timer in asio library, I guess its implemented as a heap. But in a heap data structure (implemented as vector ), insertion and deletion would be O(lg n) I would like to know the reason to use heap. This is purely for educational purpose so that I can understand the design rationale. Also I would like to know that would boost::asio asynchronous timer be efficient for say 200000 timers firing at the same time ? I also wish to implement a timer similar to one in boost::asio, purely for knowledge. I need this in my application in which I would thousands of timers firing at the same time. Can someone provide some design details of boost::asio timer implementation so that I can build a timer similar to that. ( It would make it easy for me to read the code provided by boost::asio if I know the design rationale) Please don't get offended if you find the above post irrelevant in this mailing list :-) Here is the very simple interface I am implementing. libboost_filesystem on AIX-5.3 with gcc-4.3.1: IOT/Abort trap (core dumped)

Hello, I am trying to build libboost_filesystem.a on AIX-5.3 with gcc-4.3.1. The compilation goes right but unfortunately, I have the following error at the runtime (and a core file): "IOT/Abort trap (core dumped)" When I remove this library from my tiny example, my binary works; when I link against libboost_filesystem.a (even if functions are never called), it crashes. I tried a lot of options found on the web without success. Maybe someone her will be able to help me of guide me. [Phoenix] Review: Documentation

Hi, regarding the Phoenix documentation: I'm afraid you lost me not too far from the beginning, and I would like to remark a few things: Details: ======== I am missing details and/or background, maybe even just a sentence or two more, here and there. I assume that for library designers and FP experts most of the things are crystal clear anyways. But for laymen like me, some things are pretty obscure. For example, the actor's page. It says that it is the main concept and it shows a template and with one parameter, which does not appear anywhere near the template's body. And that's pretty much it. It does not say anything about when it is used, by whom, or what the necessary characteristics of the template argument "Eval" are. Nothing. Except: "Don't worry about the details, for now." Sorry, but you lost me there. I do not have the lightest idea of what an actor is all about after reading this page. This certainly leaves a bad feeling, because the one clear statement on the page is "The Actor is the main concept behind the library." Not to worry about details would normally help to focus on the important stuff, the central concept, the main thought. But in this case? I am just being told that the actor is in fact the main concept. I don't know if all the gory details are required on that page, maybe there are too many details already (the template's code). I cannot tell. But I know that the concepts/ideas for this thing need to be explained before going on. In contrast to a crime story, I would prefer to know the plot before going on. When meeting one of the main characters, I do not want to get to know him along with the story. No, I would learn about the characteristics right away and decide whether I want to spend more time reading about him (or using him in one of my projects). I cannot really tell if the following things are documented in enough detail, since I guess I need to understand the concept of the actor. I am afraid, though, that I would require a few more sentences, here and there, or maybe just a few more examples. Examples: ========= IMHO, most examples are either too simple or too abstract. For example: The "real world example" from the starter kit is not really a real world example, it is too simple. So don't throw it away, but add something a little bit more complex. For instance, you could combine it with one from the composite page (which is pretty abstract in my eyes and does not tell me anything): /////////////// struct A { int member; }; A* a = new A; ... (arg1->*&A::member)(a); // returns member a->member /////////////// You could use this in the "real world example". Replace vector<int> by vector<A> and then find objects with object.member%2==1. regex vc8-stlport.mak missing in 1.33?

I'm upgrading from 1_33_1 to 1_36_0 (windows) and I've noticed that vc8-stlport.mak is missing from the libs\regex\build folder. Is this intentional? If so, how do I go about building for VC8 and stlport? My previous build script ran bjam with the option "-sTOOLS=vc-8_0-stlport". This now results in the warning: "no toolsets are configured". Does this relate to the above missing file? [Thread][win32, msvc] Mutexes

Hi I consider changing from win32 CRITICAL_SECTIONs to Boost.Thread mutexes. boost::mutex isn't CRITICAL_SECTION, but boost::detail::lightweight_mutex is. Does this mean that boost::mutex is heavy-weight ? If so, what's the reason for heavy-weight implementation which has the same capabilities that lightweight CRITICAL_SECTION has ? If not so, what's the reason for boost::detail::lightweight_mutex to exist ? Thanks.

Boost Serlialization on XScale problem

Hi, I am having a strange problem with the Boost Serilalizartion library on an XScale platform. I am using v1.34.1 of the libraries and I'm seeing segfaults when creating an archive object, but only under some circumstances. The problem occurs in several different projects, but I've been able to reproduce it using the most simple case from the tutorial (http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_36_0/libs/serialization/doc/index.html) The problem that I see is that the code segfaults at these lines, and a core dump shows this error is occuring down on malloc_trim(): std::ifstream ifs("filename"); boost::archive::text_iarchive ia(ifs); // <--- causes a segfault. However, if I move the "std::ifstream ifs("filename");" further up the code (next to the initialisation of the ofs object, then the code works fine. Has anyone else seen any problems like this before? We have been using Boost::Thread, and Boost::Date-Time without any problems for a while, so I believe that this may just be a serialization library problem. I am also going to give v1.36.0 a try to see if it's something subtle that's been fixed already. (I have a core dump that I can make available if anyone needs it....) --lee --

serialization: confusing exceptions

The exception "unregistered_cast" carries the message "unregistered void cast" when thrown, which is nowhere documented and requires reading the source to discover the relationship. The doc lists the internal names of the exceptions, whereas the user sees the associated messages. Either the doc should instead (also?) list the actual messages, or the internal and external names should be the same.

Hi, I have been researching the Boost archives, Tutorials, examples and I do find references to the fact that it is possible to provide arguments along with Events that a custom_reaction (in self-transition) can selectively "react" on based on the value of the argument but I am unable to articulate it using the Boost Statechart library. As reference I took the BitMachine/Performance library where the Events seemed to take a class BitNo as a parameter but I could not adapt it for my application. I am trying to control a box which has many interfaces. Each interface has an InterfaceID . I have statemachines for Box and Interface. When an interface is removed, the statemachine of the interface sends first an InterfaceDeleteTrigger event to get the Box in the InterfaceDelete_Pending state Then the Interface would like to send the actual interface Event InterfaceDelete with the Id to the Box so that the box can trigger the appropriate actions to remove the Interface. (PS - I am using two events because I read that it is not good design to try to extract triggering events and event arguments for state entry. So I tried to enter the state with a trigger event and used another instate event with actual interface id to find the actual interface). Serialize dynamic_bitset?

Does anyone have any code available to serialize dynamic_bitset? I'm guessing it would be most efficient to use from_block_range/ to_block_range and serialize the blocks one by one, or would it be reasonable to use to_string and the string constructor? I worry that care needs to be taken to avoid endianness issues. Thanks Simon

During this computation the system assumes that no one else writes to this address. This is a very optimistic approach and does not block the external bus of the processor. I just port a project from boost_1_33 to boost_1_36 on fedora core 6. After the program run a few minutes, it crashed and got a message: terminate called after throwing an instance of 'boost::exception_detail::clone_impl<boost::exception_detail::error_info_injector<boost::system::system_error> >' what(): Already open I searched the message from boost docs and google but has nothing useful. cross-platfrom binary serialization?

Hi, I'm working on a cross-platform project, where we're serializing data and sending it over TCP, using boost::serialization and boost::asio. As the data is quite big, and is mainly numeric, binary serialization provides a nice advantage over XML-based serialization, both in terms of performance and data size. But, I've found that the serialized data itself is not cross-platform. E.g. if I have a simple app, that sends serialized data via a TCP connection, it works fine as long as both ends of the connection are on the same platform (say both are Linux x86_64, or both are Windows XP). but they don't interact with each other - the data sent by one platform is not accepted 'as is' by the other. I wonder what provisions have to be done to achieve binary serialization that would work in such a context? Akos

Hello, I am trying to build the regex boost library on my Asus wl500gP router. It has openwrt kamikaze 7.09/optware installed on it. Things may take a while to build, but they do build. But I am having problems getting this specific package to work. It is beyond me. Dear boost fellows, during the last two weeks I finally had time to port our archives to recent boost versions up to 1.36. I also refactored a bit, put the archives into namespace eos and renamed them portable_[io]archive in order to prevent further mix-up with the portable binary archive from the examples. In addition I finally did some testing on x64 and found our code working without complaints. Boost Interprocess: Sharing memory among different users

Hello folks!I'm writing a software for the Linux environment. I'll need to share data between a daemon and a program running on the user's context. I chose to use shared memory because it's faster. I'm trying to use boost::interprocess::shared_memory_object but I'm facing a problem: When I access the shared memory in my test case running in the same user context, everything works fine. But when I access it using a program running in the current user when the shared memory was created as root, I get an access denied error. I searched in the documentation for a way to enable access to all users but I found nothing. Is there a way to do it? Thanks in advance. Silvio.

boost::asio::write() never returns

Hi, I use the Boost ASIO library to send TCP packets of about 500k every minute to a TCP server. I run my application on Windows XP, the server runs on a UNIX station. I use boost 1.35 While this works well initially, eventually after 4 or 5h the call to boost::asio::write() never returns, and locks my thread. No exception is generated. I checked the RAM resources on my computer when this happens and it looks like it's stable (I don't think there is any memory leak). If I were to speculaate on this, I woudl say it looks like the call suddently becomes blocking for some reason. this being either a TCP stack being full, or no answer from the server... Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Jean

Hi, in trying to debug a problem we are experiencing here with binary archives I tried switching to text archives to see if we get the same behaviour. However, now I can't even compile my code! Easy, but maybe its already a hint to the problem. The "original" Class structure in my app is far more complex, so I just will refer to my little example, as I guess its the same source some how. I tend to believe that the problem resides somewhere in the Macro BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT, as the compiler points to this. I'm working on Windows XP, with MinGW and the latest (Monday) SVN Build of boost. threads in a DLL with callbacks

Hi, I've created a component that's distributed as a DLL. The user loads the DLL, calls various methods on it and gets some data back asyncronously via callbacks. Within the component there are several threads (using boost threads of course) any of which might call the callbacks. In all our sample code demonstrating how to create callbacks and call the methods we use boost mutexes to protect the callback functions and this works just fine. Some of our clients however don't want to dip their toes into boost, and want to use windows methods to protect the callbacks. For instance so far they've tried various methods such as CComAutoCriticalSection and EnterCriticalSection. They still have a crash which they're attributing to my DLL. I keep pushing them to at least try the boost mutex as in our sample code, but no luck so far. My question is; should the windows critical section protect the callbacks just as well as the boost mutexes, or does it require a boost mutex protection? (or do you require a code example to know the answer to this?) Nik

Fixed containers allocate no dynamic memory and their memory tends to be cache-friendly due to its contiguity and proximity to the container's housekeeping data. I'm not sure SSO is even possible just using an allocator with the standard containers, because I always end up with stateful allocators. [Range] Adapt 2-iterator container constructors for Range?

As I work with Boost.Range, I frequently want to call a method returning an iterator_range and, from that range, instantiate a standard container. I have a couple of helpers I'd like to propose for inclusion in the Boost.Range library. /** * From any range compatible with Boost.Range, return an instance of any * class with a constructor accepting a compatible iterator pair. */ template<class TYPE, typename RANGE> TYPE make_from_range(const RANGE& range) { return TYPE(boost::begin(range), boost::end(range)); } It would probably be appropriate to provide a non-const RANGE& overload as well. make_from_range<CONTAINER>(range) is helpful for, e.g., passing an argument to a function accepting const CONTAINER&. [Filesystem] has_root_path()

Boost 1.33.1 used to support has_root_path() on directory_iterators. 1.36 seems to use a slightly different mechanism for directory_iterators, based on instantiating basic_directory_iterator, and I'm struggling to see what has happened to has_root_path(). It's there somewhere, but not accessible in quite the same way as it was. How do I express directory_iterator -> has_root_path() in 1.36.0 ? Thanks - Rob.

PDF Documentation

Hey, I've noticed that its mentioned in the docs that you can generate PDF documentation via boostbook, however it appears to fail violently when I try. I can build the HTML docs with little effort. Additionally, there are a number of links on the boost website to PDF versions of the docs that no longer exist and give 404 errors. Is PDF still a supported output format for the docs? Thanks. I am still in the middle of modifying the code to support UTF-16 with wchar_t, as far as I can tell now, it's quite well designed and easy to use, esp. with the utilities wrapping around the core parser. I'm upgrading the Boost release in use at work from 1.33.1 to 1.36.0, with surprisingly few issues actually, but I am stuck on one thing. There's a function in 1.33.1, has_branch_path(), for which I cannot see the equivalent functionality in 1.36. Part of my difficulty is that the 1.33.1 header declares but does not define the function, and I cannot see where the body code is! Any suggestions would be appreciated at this point. Thanks. - Rob.

Hi there, I've been busy working on the next version of gil's IO extension. The last iteration was very slow to compile especially when reading or writing tiff images. This and other problems have been fixed. As a result compilation is a lot faster but also a lot more tiff formats can now be read or written. Please grab the latest from: http://gil-contributions.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/gil_2/boost/gil/extension… This download is a little bigger than to usual since there are test images included. Please see my original announcement below for documentation. The goal of this extension is to substitute the original io lib which is part of gil, and though shipped with boost. To do this a review is probably needed. I'll work on a proper documentation as the next step. Can anyone tell me where to find a tutorial for creating quickdoc? There is one problem I cannot fix and would like to ask the experts on this list. Please read the readme.txt in libs\gil\io_new\unit_test which explains the scenario. This problem has something to do with erroneously choosing the wrong functions by the compiler. The enable_if metafunction doesn't work correctly here. As usual any feedback is welcome. In this release I've added support for: * more image formats, most importantly bit_aligned images ( like 1bit images ), * reading of subimages like one row at a time for huge images, * reading image information, only. * having a unified interface for all sorts of devices, subimages, and converter objects. So far, png, jpeg, and tiff images are supported. In the not so distant future there will be bmp and pnm images added. I installed the GNU's binaries for Windows, but unfortunately, I only had problems with them. The library is still header-only. When using boost::filesystem's paths, of course, you add a dependency to the filesystem lib. The Read Interface ------------------------ Reading an image can be done in multiple ways depending on what your need is. Like the old io lib there are 4 different ways of reading images. As there are: * read_image: Read image, the right amount of memory will be allocated beforehand. The supplied image type needs to be compatible with actual image file. * read_view: Read image, the image's memory must be already allocated. The supplied image type needs to be compatible with actual image file. * read_and_convert_image: Same as read_image, but the user can specify an color converter. * read_and_convert_view: Same as read_view, but the user can specify an color converter. There is a new function for reading image information. Since every image format has it's own set of tags, the library defines seperate image_read_info<format_tag> structures. Please see, for instance, the jpeg_tags.hpp header. As for the function parameters the following sections in the same order. 1. String for file name ( std::string, std::wstring, char*, boost::filesystem::path ) OR devices ( FILE*, TIFF*, std::ifstream ) 2. Image or view type 3. Optional: Subimage definition ( top_left corner + dimensions ) 4. Optional: Color converter. This parameter is only valid for converting functions. The default parameter is gil's default_color_converter 5. Format Tag. Reading the image information only takes parameter 1 and 5. Hi, I am trying to install Boost 1.35.0_2 as it is a requirement of installing mkvToolnix. I have installed Boost using MacPorts. Hello, I'm a newbie in using boost. First : For programming I'm using Visual Studio 2008 with SP1 (german edition) and the target platform is Windows CE 6.0 with PXA270 (XScale, ARMVI) processor. And i'm using the STL delivered with Visual Studio. If i include shared_ptr.hpp i get at compiling the errors : "error C2733 second C linkage of overloaded function 'InterlockedIncrement' not allowed." App will not run when linked to boost thread library

Hi I have added boost::threads to our mac application, which means that I have to build the boost thread library. I have manage to build the universal boost static and dynamic library. When I add the static library to the project, the project builds with no problems and the dynamic library produced it added to the application package. However as soon a I try to run the application, the application fails with the error that it cannot load the dynamic library. Is there a tool on the mac to determine why a dynamic library does not load. Does anyone know why boost is causing this problem. The dynamic library to built on 10.5 with 10.4 framework. 1.36 Threads/ASIO causing SEGV when cleaning up thread specific storage

I am trying to run my unit previous unit tests with the new 1.36 release, but SEGV is being thrown upon exit. No faults are thrown using 1.34.1, and no code is changed between versions. But for some reason, it keeps throwing! [asio] boost::system::error::success passed to handler

Hi, I am working with the mulitcast receive example from http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_36_0/doc/html/boost_asio/example/multicast/…. The issue I am having is that every time I receive a packet it gets printed as expected but the receive handler is then called again and this time the if (!error) test fails. Printing the error always gives the message 'Success'. This seems a bit unusual and I am wondering if I there is a way to have the library not generate these success error messages or if I will have to handle getting a success error after every time I receive a packet? Linker errors with boost thread 1.36

Hello, I got some linker errors when I use the new boost thread library 1.36. together with the Visual Studio 2008. The linker error appears when I use the method create_thread: _guiThread =_threads.create_thread(gui_thread_starter); The error message is: error LNK2022: metadata operation failed (8013119F) : There is a typeref without the necessary suitable typedef If I comment this line the linker error wont appear. I linked the thread library dynamically to my library by using the definition: #ifndef BOOST_THREAD_USE_DLL #define BOOST_THREAD_USE_DLL #endif #ifndef BOOST_ALL_DYN_LINK #define BOOST_ALL_DYN_LINK #endif I compiled the library with the /clr option. boost.serialization throwing bad_alloc

When using a stringstream in binary mode along with the non-portable binary archive occasionally I see the serialization code throw bad_alloc when reconstructing an object. It appears to be when trying to serialize a derived stl map. We derive from std::map in our project to add a few more convenience methods and a simpler interface and I then added the following code to serialize this newly derived type: template<class Archive> void serialize(Archive &p_archiver, foobar::ResourceMap &p_map, const unsigned int version) { p_archiver & base_object<map<foobar::ResourceMap::key_type, foobar::ResourceMap::mapped_type> >(p_map); } I assume that is OK? It appears to work most of the time. Could it be that when that map is empty it encounters odd behaviour? I pass, to the archive constructor, the no_header flag - is this a problem? I haven't tried the text archivers yet. This is with Boost version 1.35 on an x86-64 Linux installation (gcc 4.1.2) . I get the same behaviour with and without optimisation (-O0 -g3 and -g0 -Os) and with an unlimited stack size and a limit of ~10M. Has anyone else seen similar behaviour. Using a hash function (SHA1) I can see that the same bytes that make up these messages (in our protocol classes are serialized in the payload of messages) are sent to and from the peers so I am pretty sure (though not 100% yet) it isn't due to any corrupt or incorrect data in the underlying stringstreams (the string streams are essentially made up of the message payload) themselves. A few days back, I asked for support for writing an iterator which merges sorted iterators. Andrew Bromage came up with some very good hints, asking me to publish my variant if I should come up with something nice. Hello, In my project I have to create loggers dynamically and spread logging info over sevral files (each logger writes to its own file, each file covers some "thread" of activity). However, all the examples show global log definitions only, so probably dynamic creation of multiple loggers is a missuse of the library? Is it possible to route messages to different files by means of one single logger? Thanks.

I really hope to see your vote and your participation in the discussions on the Boost mailing lists! --------------------------------------------------- About the library: The Phoenix library enables FP techniques such as higher order functions, lambda (unnamed functions), currying (partial function application) and lazy evaluation in C++. The focus is more on usefulness and practicality than purity, elegance and strict adherence to FP principles. History: Phoenix is a mature library from years of use as a sub-project under Spirit where it serves its purpose for semantic action handling. Phoenix predates Lambda's acceptance into Boost, but not Lambda itself. When Lambda was reviewed, it was concluded that both libraries were to be merged, and work on it began, culminating in Phoenix V2, what you are seeing now (an interesting offshoot of this effort is Boost.Fusion. We needed a powerful tuple facility with algorithms to get the design right). Recently, Eric Niebler did a (fully compatible) port to proto making use of boost.typeof for result type deduction. Eric's port, while significant, will not be the subject of the review, but can be regarded as the future of Phoenix (Phoenix V3). boost::filesystem exception not caught on MacOS X

Hi, I have a strange problem that an exception thrown by a boost::filesystem directory_iterator is not caugth on MacOS X. Please consider the following code: ("const string &dir" is a parameter) bool retVal = true; try { directory_iterator i(dir); directory_iterator end; while (i != end) { // do something ++i; } } catch (...) { retVal = false; } While this works perfectly on Windows and Linux (the exception is caught fine), on MacOS I get the following: terminate called after throwing an instance of 'boost::filesystem::basic_filesystem_error<boost::filesystem::basic_path<std::string, boost::filesystem::path_traits> >' what(): boost::filesystem::basic_directory_iterator constructor Abort trap The program runs fine (withouth the trap) if I comment out the upper lines. I use the boost 1.34.0 lib built as universal binary on MacOS 10.5, according to the instructions at http://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/wiki/CMakeConfigAndBuild I link to the static non-debug mt version of boost_filesystem. Exceptions within my program are caught fine, just this boost exception is not caught. The program is also compiled as non-debug. Any help would be very much appreciated. Regards, Lothar

linking to boost thread exposes static initialisation order fiasco in ublas?

Hi This is a weird issue, and I'm by no means sure that my description is correct. It might be a newbie misunderstanding, but it is weird behaviour and I would appreciate any help in getting to the bottom of it. Bug: serialization of STL collections on Linux x86-64.

In boost 1.35 on Linux on x86-64 an attempt to serialize any of the STL collections produces multiple definitions of implementation_level. Eventually I tracked these to the int64_t handling in collection_traits.hpp, where the following code appears: // determine if its necessary to handle (u)int64_t specifically // i.e. that its not a synonym for (unsigned) long // if there is no 64 bit int or if its the same as a long // we shouldn't define separate functions for int64 data types. #if defined(BOOST_NO_INT64_T) \ || (ULONG_MAX != 0xffffffff && ULONG_MAX == 18446744073709551615u) // 2**64 - 1 # define BOOST_NO_INTRINSIC_INT64_T #endif The bug is that the lengthy constant is just "u", and so will be compiler-truncated to unsigned int, 4 bytes on this platform, and so will fail to be equal to the 8-byte ULONG_MAX. Changing the "u" to "ul" fixes the bug. I don't know if this has already been fixed in 1.36; I don't have a copy handy. Ivan Godard

Hi, when parsing RSS, there are many date formats. For example: Fri, 19 Sep 2008 16:49:00 EDT Sat, 20 Sep 2008 11:25:00 +0100 I would like to write a single function which takes care of parsing this stuff and returns a GMT time. The attached code can take care of the format with the exception of the time zone. From what I read in the documentation and various other sources I take it that time zones like EDT cannot be automatically handled by BoostTime. But I would assume that it is not a big deal to take care of something like +0100? Sadly, I have no idea how to do that? Thanks and regards, Roland

Hi, I'm wondering how you would handle the following case. Suppose I have a set of mathematical formulas that has both bigger case and lower case variables (such as both 'X' and 'x'). This situation is pretty common. In order to implement them in C++, I could either write bigger cases as well as lower cases in C++, which is not in consistence with the convention that you mention. Or I have to convert bigger cases to lower cases, which is also not easy to read, as it is different from the original mathematical form. Which approach would you prefer? I would prefer the former one. Therefore, the convention is not followed. offtopic: std C++ / STL / boost-friendly UI framework?

Hi, This is a bit of an offtopic question, but I wonder if there are any / if there will be any standard C++ / STL / boost friendly UI frameworks? When I look at UI libraries, like Qt or MS MFC, they all have their own constructs to generic concepts that are well (and better) covered in standard C++ / STL / boost. Like they have QArray, CArray, QFile, etc. etc. This is bad for a number of reasons. For one, one has to write a lot of adaptation code, like taking values from an STL iterator and filling a QArray with it, or the other way around. The second, much worse is that sloppy developers tend to stick with the UI-library specific constructs, and thus dig themselves into non-portable (in the case of MFC), or library- and license-specific (Qt which in GPL) code. And they are usually quite resistant to reasoning on using more generic and portable code for the same purpose. Thus I wonder - does anyone foresee a portable UI library which would be based on standard C++ / STL / boost? By this I mean that the generic constructs would be taken from here, and the UI library would really only contain things specific to UIs? Akos

Hi boost-users, I've mentioned that after calling output_test_stream.is_empty() the stream will be cleared. If you subsequently want to compare the stream with output_test_stream.is_equal(...) this doesn't work, because the stream is empty. Is this a bug or a feature? Can boost::interprocess be somehow used to implement Solaris door functionality ?

Hi I have been using Solaris DOORS in my project which is now being ported to Linux. I am extremely sorry if this is not the place to post this thread but all I am asking is " is there any boost library to make this thing possible ". I have downloaded boost 1.36 and there is this library called boost::interprocess . Can it in anyway be used to implement functioning similar to Solaris DOORS ? Here is what I want to do: Process 1 passes arguments to process to using a function say f1(arguments).. in Solaris it is called door_call. The function is executed in the process2 and then return values returned. When this happens, the process 1 returns. I don't need any ready made package etc to do this but I am just asking for suggestions as what would be the best way to implement this ? I just need some suggestions as boost is the place for expert library designers and I want to do it in the best possible way so as to learn. I am asking suggestions because I guess this thing would take time and I don't want to go in the wrong direction first and then get the right way. So that's why this thread. Thanks for your patience. Hello Sebastian and thank you for the follow up, I must precise that I have 2 builds of my projects: one linking to the multi threaded static runtime (/MT) and one linking to the multithreaded dynamic runtine (/MD). I defined BOOST_ALL_NO_LIB=1 to disable autolinking, and i am linking manually to libboost_filesystem-vc90-mt-s-1_36.lib libboost_program_options-vc90-mt-s-1_36.lib and libboost_system-vc90-mt-s-1_36.lib for the /MT variant, and to boost_filesystem-vc90-mt-1_36.lib, boost_program_options-vc90-mt-1_36.lib and boost_system-vc90-mt-1_36.lib for the /MD variant. For _both_ variants, I get stuck with following unresolved externals: __declspec(dllimport) public: void __thiscall boost::program_options::detail::cmdline::set_additional_parser(...) __declspec(dllimport) class boost::system::error_category const & __cdecl boost::system::get_generic_category(void) __declspec(dllimport) class boost::system::error_code boost::filesystem::detail::throws What is more suprising, is that for the dynamic version, the set_additional_parser export _does_ appear when I dumpbin /exports ./boost_program_options-vc90-mt-1_36.lib | grep set_additional_parser but the two other symbols do not appear in boost_system-vc90-mt-s-1_36.lib. I looked at your examples but think that you can abstract better. I don't think one should have to use sendmessage for example. Not that I do much .net dev, but I did find that winforms was the easiest ui framework I have seen. Umm, just out of interest, what *is* Wascana supposed to be? The site just calls it "Desktop Developer" and while it does mention Eclipse I'm not at all clear how it's related. I've jumped around the site but wasn't able to locate any explanation of what it really is. It does mention that it 'incorporates' (among other things) wxWidget and intends to 'incorporate' boost, but what is 'incorporate' supposed to mean? JRE is listed as well (but also gdb), so again I'm wondering what is this thing? As an aside, last I looked Eclipse was Java only, so why would Wascana be of help for C++ development when it's aimed at Eclipse (or so I understand it for now) Sorry if I'm being dumb, the issue interests me for private purposes and I've got to admit I'm a bit out of touch with UI development tools atm. [test] How to ignore a signal?

I've a test case which receives the SIGCHLD signal on Solaris. Boost.Test catches it and prints an error message although in that test case SIGCHLD s perfectly fine. How do I make Boost.Test ignore this signal? I found BOOST_NO_SIGNAL_HANDLING back in Boost.Test 1.33.1 but it doesn't seem to exist anymore in 1.36.0? Boris

Hi boost-users, I created a class and overload the <<-operator. Now I tried to test them by assigning an instance of the class to an ostringstream, but I get always the error: "fatal error in "EmptyVertex_output_stream": memory access violation occurred at address 0xcccccce0, while attempting to read inaccessible data" It's very curious, because assigning a string directly to the ostringstream, no error occurs. [boost-users][logging] limiting/truncation the output file

Hello, I know the above library is not a part of the boost yet, but probably some of you had an experience with it. I log to a text file. What I need is to ensure that the file doesn't exceed some maximal size. For the sake of simplicity, I'd like just to re-create the file when it grows to much. I guess I may not just delete it externally, as it's managed by the logger. So how can I tell the logger to delete the file? (Ideally, I'd like to "scroll" the data in the file like in a queue - first in first out, but I guess it's impossible, isn't it?) Thank you, Igor'.
