tcp::sockets non-copyable, and threads

I'm trying to design a basic server, and I figured now would be a good time to get familiar with what Boost has to offer. However, I've already encountered a difficulty: boost::asio::ip::tcp::sockets are non-copyable. Therefore, I cannot simply acceptor.accept(socket), and then spawn a boost::thread on an object that uses that socket! If I pass a reference or pointer the socket must remain in scope, so it will need to by dynamically allocated....which doesn't seem right to me. I figure I'm probably missing something fundamental on the way boost is intended to work. Anyone care to enlighten me?

Simple Filesystem Library Build and Usage

Using: Boost 1.36 Want to build static Filesystem Library for Windows and Linux. Right now I want to make sure the build is successful with the compilers we are using. I am a noobie with Boost and BJam, and am having difficulties building a test application for testing. Unfortunately, I'm dusting off my programming hat and learning to use all the appropriate tools again like compilers etc. I have read through much of the Boost instructions but still cannot seem to get the Filesystem library compiled as a static library and working with practical examples. Question: What is the simplest way to build a library to be used by my other source code out of the Filesystem Library on both Windows and Unix systems? And what is the simplest way to test that build? My first test is on Windows XP with Visual Studio Express 2005. *Attempt 1: *Create App with Visual Studio 2005 I ran the following from main Boost directory on the command line to create the library files: bjam debug --with-filesystem stage I then started a new Win32 Console Application in Visual Studio with the file_size.cpp test example. Under "Additional Include Directories" I put: "C:\Program Files\boost_1_36_0";"C:\Program Files\boost_1_36_0\stage\lib" I then tried to build the solution, and received the following error: LINK : fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'uuid.lib' *Attempt 2:* Create App with BJam I navigated to \libs\filesystem\src and created a Jamfile with the following: lib test : operations.cpp path.cpp portability.cpp utf8_codecvt_facet.cpp : <variant>debug <link>static ; I ran bjam in this folder which created a library: libtest-vc80-mt-gd-1_36.lib I copied the file to \libs\filesystem\example and created a Jamfile there with the following: exe FilesystemTest : file_size.cpp libtest-vc80-mt-gd-1_36.lib ; After running bjam in this folder, I received severael unresolved symbol erros like the following: file_size.obj : error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol "class boost::system::error_category const & __cdecl boost::system::get_system_category(void)" (?get_system_category@system @boost@@YAABVerror_category@12@XZ) referenced in function "public: __thiscall boost::system::error_code::error_code(void)" (??0error_code@system@boost@@QAE@XZ) Any help would be much appreciated!

I am building boost using the following command; this is done from the command window of MSVC 2005. \boost-jam-3.1.16-1-ntx86\bjam --build-dir=c:\boost-build --toolset=msvc --build-type=complete --address-model=64 The intention is to build for amd64 target. Is this the right command? Should toolset be specified as "msvc-8.0_64"? Help with split_iterator, iterator_range and strings

I am trying to write an adaptor function that takes a string and a list of character delimiters and populates an output iterator with the result. I mean, am I missing something visa-vi the proper interaction of split_iterator, iterator_range and the container they are splitting and making a range of? I believe since b is a split_iterator type, that *b is of type iterator_range, is this not correct? The templates would be as I listed for SplitIt and RangeIt, as I understand it. Now, originally I was hoping there would be an automatic conversion back from iterator_range to the ranged container, which would make a copy of the elements in the range and stick them into a container of the original type (in this case, string). Is there no conversion from iterator_range<mystring::const_iterator> back to mystring? You see, originally, I wanted to write: std::copy(b, e, out); But it seems there is no way around using std::transform with an explicit conversion from RangeIt to mystring with copy_range. Or am I wrong in that assumption? No, I don't want to use the split function since I don't want to populate the whole container, just write my entries to an output iterator; it's generic in that sense to allow for ostream_iterator or back_inserters or whatever. Also, is there some way to not have to explicitly provide the copy_range input type since that type is already known to be the same type as *b and *e? Is there a way to generate the library names used by auto_link.hpp

I'd like to be able to use the generated library names to automatically add a linker delay load option but the auto_link.hpp file undefs the lib name and some of the other defines used. Is there a supported way of getting the generated names other than duplicating and customising bits of the auto_link.hpp file? Thanks

Hi, I am new to the Boost graph library and trying to learn from examples in the documentation. I would like to ask about the simple vertex iterator's behavior. Below is sample code. In a nutshell, the program adds some edges to a Boost graph, then prints the vertices. The vertex numbers added are not contiguous: the loop basically adds edges between vertices 0, 1, 2, 6, and 7; no edges are added for vertices 3, 4, 5. Then I use a vertex iterator to show tine in- and out-degree of each vertex. My expectation was that the iterator would only show me the vertices for which I added edges, but instead it shows vertices from 0..7, essentially from the low value to the high value. This seems to be a feature, but I don't know where to look to find an explanation. Perhaps this behavior is dictated by my choices of data structures vecS? So far I have been relying on the online documentation, which I find to be quite difficult to use. For example, the web site doesn't seem to have a comprehensive index to Boost generic types and functions, just that alone would be an enormous help. Is the Boost book is (substantially?) better than using the online docs, or is it just the same content on paper? [mutli_index] class reference available? / How to detect insertion failures

I recently discovered the boost multi_index library. It appears to be an incredible resource that I am really looking forward to using. Unfortunately, I have been frustrated by the documentation and unable to get much usable code written. The bulk of the information that has been helpful to me is in the examples. Branching out beyond what is specifically done in an example has proven to be difficult for me because of a lack of reference documentation. I am not an expert in reading templatized and type-defed code, so reading the headers themselves has been very time consuming. That led me to wonder if Doxygen-like documentation is available? For instance, the Asio library has a very nice reference available http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_36_0/doc/html/boost_asio/reference.html Looking at the TCP socket's connect method leads you here: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_36_0/doc/html/boost_asio/reference/basic_st… Here I can see the parameters and return types and in general figure out how to use this class. Contrast that with multi_index. There doesn't appear to be comprehensive class reference documentation. I only figured out how to do simple tasks like inserting new items into the container by looking at the examples ( http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_36_0/libs/multi_index/example/basic.cpp) My specific question (which the examples don't seem to cover) is how to tell when insertion fails. What if the new item's unique key constraint fails? I have had many other, seemingly simple questions that I would hope could be answered in minutes or seconds that have turned into hours of trial and error and combing through example programs. What other resources are out there that I refer to in order to use this great library? Thanks, Nick

How can I use unique_ptr with container and string in boost::interprocess?

Hi, I have a complex data structure that wants to put into shared memory. In STL way it should be: list<tuple<string, string, map<string, string>>> As you can see, there are a lot of strings which will be put into shared memory. My current way to a string into a container is (I use list<string> as a example): typedef allocator<char, managed_windows_shared_memory::segment_manager> CharAllocator; typedef basic_string<char, std::char_traits<char>, CharAllocator> SharedMemoryString; typedef allocator<SharedMemoryString, managed_windows_shared_memory::segment_manager> PushValueAllocator; typedef list<PushValue, PushValueAllocator> PushQueue; In this way, I always must construct a SharedMemoryString first then put it into container: SharedMemoryString mStr(charAlloc); mStr = "some stirng..."; queue->push_back(mStr); In my understanding, this will cost twice memory allocations to store this string into shared memory. First time is mStr = "some string...", second time is that mStr is put into list container, then mStr's memory will be destructed after leaving the scope. This means if the string length is 1KB, my shared memory size at least must be 2 * 1KB + container overhead. This seems stupid because twice memory allocation and copy operation. So, I want to use unique_ptr to solve this problem. I try: typedef managed_unique_ptr<SharedMemoryString, managed_windows_shared_memory>::type StringUniquePtr; typedef allocator<StringUniquePtr, managed_windows_shared_memory::segment_manager> PushValueAllocator; typedef list<PushValue, PushValueAllocator> PushQueue; SharedMemoryString* mStr = new SharedMemoryString(charAlloc); *mStr = "some stirng..."; queue->push_back(StringUniquePtr(make_managed_unique_ptr(mStr, segment))); But it can't compile... :( I have no idea to make unique_ptr to work with string in container in boost::interprocess. I found the BGL book to be helpful to a certain degree. The walkthroughs and examples seem easier to follow, and the index and table of contents are helpful to have at one's fingertips. Unfortunately, it is a bit old and so some important features are not covered in the book at all (property bundles, subgraphs). For those you have to rely on the online documentation. Nathan

I Found the problem myself. The problem was transfer_at_least(1). I should write the hole content to the thhp server and after this I should read. With transfer_at_least(1) I wrote some content and want to read again from the server. Note that such a parser is not pure syntax - because the VWG grammar embeds type and semantic constraints as well as syntactic ones, the actions can contain type and semantic behavior as well as conventional ASTs (Abstract Syntax Trees) - no separate bug-ridden semantic pass is needed. You can validly see the VWG definitional mechanism as merely writing a canonical compiler for the target language and then using that compiler for the definition. The advantage of writing this compiler in VWG instead of say C is the brevity and rigor of the grammar representation. However, VWG does not remove the fundamental ontological paradox involved in language definition and indeed involved in mathematics itself, where the problem of axioms remains since the Greeks. Ivan p.s. a tutorial for two-level Grammars is at http://homepages.cwi.nl/~steven/vw.html, but the surface syntax (of the Grammar) is somewhat different from that used in the Report. p.p.s. Also note that VWG is only a notational device for language definition; it still leaves the definition of the language itself up to the designer. Consequently designing a practical language remains. Thus it is trivial to write a VWG grammar that contains free non-terminals such that the syntax check of a candidate program in the defined language is equivalent to the halting problem. You thought gcc was slow? As a practical matter Algol68 was carefully defined to be LL(1) and compilable by a one-pass compiler with single-symbol lookahead, but that was the choice of the designers and not required by VWG. Would that C had been so designed! :-)

[Boost.Python] Can't work out what an extractor does

I've been puzzling around about how to deal with converting my string type to/from Python. I've managed to get one part of the puzzle solved, but can't work out from the documentation what the other part is. From the documentation at [1] it isn't at all clear what actually needs to be done -- I can't even tell from that what the function signature I need to code to is. I think this [2] is relevant, but can't work out in what way -- no mention is made of where the reference object comes from and nor is there an example of the implementation of a simple extractor concept -- the internal implementations of the ones given on the page are far from illuminating. So, basically, I guess there ought to be a fairly simple way to add this sort of type conversion into the Boost.Python type registry, but it appears to be undocumented and I can't see anything for this in the examples or the tests in the library either. namespace po = boost::program_options does parse_config_file function support an end-of-line continuation using the backslash character '\' in INI file. One should be able to specify libraries as follows: ink_library = tc300c10v10v_hs_levelshifter_worst.db_Tj125_pg \ tc300c10v12v_hs_levelshifter_worst.db_Tj125_pg \ tc300c10v_hs_worst.db_Tj125_pg:tc300c10v_lp_worst.db_Tj125_pg Similarly, always_on_signals as: always_on_signals = tb.u_top.uSD_BLK.tmp31,\ tb.u_top.uSD_BLK.tmp32, \ tb.u_top.uSD_BLK.out3 Besides readability, we may run into issues due to number of characters per line allowed without support for backslash. Segmentation fault when using std::string in stl::maps in shared memory

Hello All, I have been trying boost library for sharing stl::maps using shared memory. I am able to run the example code on sharing stl::maps successfully. It uses int-float pair to store in map. I have to store std::string-int pair. Writing into the map, works fine, yet reading the same from a different process results in Segmentation fault. Multi-Array indexing

Hi, I'd like to understand how the Boost Multi-array implements multiple indexing using the regular square bracket operator. I've waded through the template code for a few hours, from what I understand, there's a nested bunch of sub-arrays which leads to a final object which offers a reference into the data array. I still can't figure out, however, how it solves this problem: Consider a Multi-Array A with dimension 3, Calling A[ i ][ j ][ k ] requires a call to A[ i ] which returns a Subarray, S1 The subarray gets indexed S1[ j ] and another subarray S2 is returned. however S2[k] doesn't return a subarray, but a reference to the data in the multiarray. However, S1 and S2 are the same object (subarray), hence require the same overloaded operator, returning the same type. making this unfeasible. Therefore, the only way I can think to eliminate this dilemma is to have a different object type for every dimension. I'm not sure if this is what Multi-array does, but I'd sure like to know how it's done . Thanks Todd

What am I supposed to be looking at on that page? The Wikipedia Algol68 article is a reasonable brief informal introduction. It does not mention VWG; I cited it so you could see what VWG was used to define, and so you would have a more congenial starting point than the Algol68 definition itself. http://burks.brighton.ac.uk/burks/language/other/a68rr/rrtoc.htm I see a large table of contents there. Care to narrow it down for me? This citation is the formal definition. The discussion of the definition mechanism is chapter 1. Chapters 2-9 are the language proper; 10-11 are what a modern language would call the "standard library" and in this context can be ignored; and 12 is tabular summary material that appears to have been omitted from the document. The whole report is <10% the size of of the C++ standard /without/ its standard library, and for a richer language than C++ at that. In consequence the definition is extremely dense semantically. For example, Algol68 permits slicing (a generalization of subscripting) a multidimensional array so that the result is an array of the same or less dimension that is a regular partial alias of the original. For example, given a rectangular matrix you can apply a slicing operation that yields the tridiagonal of the original, which then can be manipulated as an array in its own right. If you really want to pursue this then I strongly recommend that you start with Lindsey & van der Meulen (Lindsey, C.H. and van der Meulen, S.G., /Informal Introduction to ALGOL 68/, North-Holland, 1971). It is well written and clear, and you will know far more about language design and definition than perhaps you really wanted when you have finished it. As for my own contribution: How badly do you want to see something like this in Boost? Badly enough to jump in and get your hands dirty with some code? Maybe you could help me to add two-level grammar support to Proto. the answer is not badly enough to do it myself, and you (or anyone) have /much /to do even before deciding to actually try. Yes, I'll help, but I have no capacity to hand-hold. However, by all means jump in: Well, is there room for *yet another guy* in this stuff cause I'm really interested to get somethign out of this. Boost Graph Layout with Fixed Nodes

Hello, I wish to layout a graph using a force-directed layout algorithm, but where a few of the nodes are fixed. That is, there is a subset of nodes that have a predetermined position that must be maintained. Is it possible to achieve such behavior using one of the boost graph layout algorithms? I have been over the documentation for each and my conclusion would be that such behavior is not possible. Has anyone tried this before? Can not compile a program that uses typeof, package by gcc?

The gcc folks themselves use the EDG front end to check bug reports against gcc/g++. The EDG front end is used by Intel's ICC compiler and many others. There is a great online service through which you can try your code against this compiler: http://www.comeaucomputing.com/tryitout/ I heavily use this Comeau service, not only for actual gcc bugs (I've reported a ton) but also to make progress when the bug is between my ears and gcc is not being helpful. The EDG diagnostic quality is way beyond gcc - they even do a better job of the cryptic error message stacks from template metaprogramming. Ivan

Hello, I would like to use a counting semaphore - and to make sure that the threads will enter the semaphore by their arrival order. Is there a build-in counting semaphore with some kind of priority queue? if not, do boost threads have some kind of priority? I've noticed that some people implemented counting semaphore with condition variable, using wait and notify, but that doesn't keep the order. Is there another way to do it without actually implement my own priority queue? Thanks in advance, Gali

Hello. I've wrote a SSL Proxy and have a big problem. I use a HTTP Client in bei Proxy to communicate with my HTTP Server. HTTP Client and HTTP Server are localhost. A SSL Browser should call my local SSL Proxy and internal a HTTP Client communicate with my HTTP Server. If the SSL Brower sends a POST request to my proxy, I have a problem. Hi all, I recently compiled boost_ 1.36,(after 4 hours....). My question is simple (I haven't so much experience with C++ ), I only need the dll and .lib files, right?, because my build directory contains also the *.o files , and it sums 17 gb in my disk, and I think it's too much. Can i erase the *.o files??? Hello, one of our customers wants us to compile a native Windows x64 build of our application. As we are using a lot of C++0x code, we are forced to use a Win64 port of gcc 4.x/MinGW (http://mingw-w64.sourceforge.net/) instead of the regular Visual Studio 8 x64 compiler. The solution isn't very pretty ... write a grammar that allows expressions with incompatible terminals, and then write a separate transform that checks the terminals for compatibility. This issue came up during Proto's review and I posted some example code here (see the SameTerminals transform): http://lists.boost.org/Archives/boost/2008/03/135169.php I wish I knew of a better solution. The canonical way to incorporate typing (including much richer type systems than this) in a formal grammar is through van Wijngaarden grammars. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algol68. It is possible to generate both the parser and type analysis from such a grammar, and compilers that do so still exist. Sadly, there is no Boost VWG library. Perhaps you'll write one?

Apple iPod uses Boost. At least looks like that.There's 'legal' in menu, where some software licenses are listed, the last one is Boost Software License. This may help someone to convince boss that Boost libraries are needed for any project, as they are used even in such tiny and useless thing ;-)

Must cast unsigned int for random generator seed

I wanted to save the initial state of a random number generator and I ran into this issue - boost::mt19937 rng; unsigned int rseed = static_cast<unsigned int>(std::time(0)); //rng.seed( rseed ); // This causes an error rng.seed( static_cast<unsigned int>(rseed) ); // ok The error is "mersenne_twister.hpp:103: error: `gen' cannot be used as a function". Obviously not a big problem since I can just use the cast and keep going. But is there a reason for this behavior? It seems odd that one must cast an unsigned int as an unsigned int to make it work.

Is having a transform that take an expression and returns the underlying type OR mpl::void_ if an error occurs the good solution ? okay, it's within my grasp now. Primarily I get a basic_istream. To facilitate the 'while std::cin' idiom, there is a conversion of basic_istream to void* defined. That seems to hit me in my example. FYI: std::streamsize i = istr.read(buffer,10); is calling the read-function of my DeviceT template parameter, perfect. So I am probably going to use a read + gcount-combination. [Thread] Bug in 1.35.0 and 1.36.0 timed wait code.

I posted this shortly after the 1.36.0 release but I neglected to put the [thread] tag in the subject. Since I noticed 1.37 is already being finalized I figured I'd post again. There is a bug in the get_due_time(...) function in lib/src/win32/thread.cpp line 343 when boost::date_time is setup to have nanosecond resolution. The integer division always results in a due_time of 0 so the timed waits never wait. I fixed my local copy by changing the order of operations but I haven't investigated to see if this could cause an overflow in situations where nanosecond time resolution has not been configured. In general I question whether it was a good idea to have the threading library depend on date_time? There is a lot of functionality and code in date_time that the thread library doesn't need. The C++0x standard suggests a much simpler system_time class. While there is overlap between such a system_time class and the date_time class, the smaller compile time / code size costs and lower chance of bugs when only using the threading library seems worth it. Hi, I'm trying to use asio, and I run into a compiler error when using async_connect. I don't think this is an asio issue, perhaps a compiler or bind issue. Errors and code snippet below. I'm perplexed by the error, as apparently the compiler can't if 'this' should be passed as a pointer, or by reference. I also tried alternate syntax using bind and mem_fn as mentioned in the bind docs, but that gave exactly the same error. Collections versus std::map

I'm looking for a fast sparse array that permits ordered traversal of the occupied slots. std::map is much too slow. boost multi-index with a sequenced index on an unsigned int is significantly slower even that the std::map, which isn't too surprising given the writeup. Is there something else in boost that fills this space?

cpp code and Boost.Interprocess compile error

Hello All, I was looking for using stl maps in shared memory, when i came across Boost library. I have downloaded boost_1_36_0 version. boost::numeric::interval - what are interval_holder and number_holder for?

Perhaps the main boost developer mailing list would be the better place to ask this question, but I'll try it here first: I cannot find any references to interval_holder and number_holder, which are defined in boost/numerics/interval/interval.hpp in any other files of the boost library. [format] crash on windows / inquiry

I can understand the access violation on a null string, but that feature makes it unsuitable for a sprintf replacement. 2) Is there a way to determine the number of expected arguments in a format object? Looks like the basic_format::num_args_ is exactly what I'm looking for, but I can't find this exposed anywhere. shared_ptr singleton

Hello, I'm getting some troubles with shared_ptr when trying to implement a singleton pattern. Actually, it's not the singleton itself (which seems to work, in a separate program), but in the context I need it, doesn't work. I tried to figure out why (and actually I found an alternative implementation which works), but still I'm trying to understand what goes wrong. I'm trying to do this: having a hierarchy of classes where there is one Base class and a number of derived ones, each class is in a different cpp file. All these classes must be registered in a Register class, which is itself derived from Object. Register is the singleton, implemented like this: class Register; typedef shared_ptr<Register> RegisterP; class Register: public Object { public: Register(); void add(string name) { // Stuff with name } static RegisterP global() { if (!_global) _global = RegisterP(new Register); // * return _global; } private: static RegisterP _global; }; To register the various classes, does exist a special class, not in hierarchy, like this: class ClassRegisterer { public: ClassRegisterer::ClassRegisterer(string name) { Register::global()->register(name); // ** } } #define REGISTER(C) ClassRegisterer _registerClass_ ## C ( #C) In each file of the of the project, this macro is used when a class is created: Foo.cpp class Foo: public Object {...}; REGISTER(Foo); Bar.cpp class Bar: public Object {...}; REGISTER(Bar); This is also used for the Register class itself: Register.cpp class Register: public Object {...}; REGISTER(Register); The problem is that global() is called N times, but the new Register (*) is executed twice, instead of once. Investigating with some couts, I found out that - dunno why - the pointer _global is set to 0 after the first execution, in fact at the time of second execution it's created another object, which isn't deleted and is kept. Trying quickly with a debugger, it seems that at (**) a destructor for shared_ptr is called, and I think that it may be the cause of the issue, but I'm having an hard time figuring this out and *why* a destructor is called (maybe it's just for a temporary object). Looking at boost docs, i found out this: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_35_0/libs/smart_ptr/sp_techniques.html#stat… so I tried to use that null deleter, like this: struct nullDeleter { void operator()(void const *p) const { cout << "Trying to delete " << p << endl; } }; and used like: if (!_global) _global = RegisterP(new Register, nullDeleter()); The problem is that this is never called! The object is never destroyed by this, but somehow the static _global is set to 0 (only once), and thus allocated twice. I temporary solved this using a static raw pointer, which is allocated once and a shared_ptr is built with it: class Register { ... static RegisterP global() { if (!_global) _global = new Register; return RegisterP(_global, nullDeleter()); } ... static Register *_global; }; Which works. 1.36.0 boost/random/uniform_01 Infinite[?] Loop

I'm sure everyone will think I'm crazy, but here goes... Background: I came across this problem while developing a proof of concept for my master's project. It entails generating random numbers according to either a uniform or a normal distribution. I wrote a few wrapper classes to simplify dealing with the generators and distributions. Those wrapper classes let me do this: randomGenerator *rg; if(uniformDistribution) rg = new uniformGenerator(); else rg = new normalGenerator(); (I also have constructors that take arguments to alter the range of values, but I'm not using them presently.) Then I can retrieve values like so: (*rg)() uniformGenerator and normalGenerator inherit from randomGenerator, and are wrappers for these: boost::variate_generator<boost::minstd_rand&, boost::uniform_real<> > boost::variate_generator<boost::minstd_rand&, boost::normal_distribution<> > I currently have two programs that use those wrapper classes. One is fairly minimal; it simply parses some command line arguments that affect the distribution and quantity, then retrieves the values and prints them to stdout. The other program is my proof of concept; it does the same argument parsing (with a few more options), then makes use of the values to run my simulation, which is mostly manipulating STL containers. Problem: Now we come to the crazy part. I work mostly on one of two Windows machines, using g++ under Cygwin. On either machine, both of those programs run to completion every time, if I compile with -O1, -O2, or -O3. However, if I use -O0 (or just no -O argument), then the simulation locks up. The other program---that just prints random numbers---never locks up. (Incidentally, this program was my attempt to create a minimal program that replicated the behavior.) By single-stepping with gdb, I determined that it gets stuck in boost/random/uniform_01.hpp: 58 for (;;) { 59 result_type result = result_type(_rng() - (_rng.min)()) * _factor; 60 if (result < result_type(1)) 61 return result; 62 } gdb shows that result is always equal to 1, which of course leads to an infinite loop. Single-stepping through all of the code directly related to the random generators shows the same sequence of instructions for both programs. If I use the uniform distribution, it gets stuck when I try to retrieve the second value. If I use the normal distribution, it gets stuck on the third retrieval. Also worth noting, by default the generators are supplied with a different seed value every time I run either program. Getting back to the programming environment, when I build on the Solaris machines in my school's CS department, the program never gets stuck. For my part, it's exactly the same source, and I still use g++. I have not been able to coerce any warnings or errors from the compiler. So, I'm all out of ideas. I'm open to suggestions for fixing this, but I'm hoping the solution is less extreme than compiling gcc from source.

MPL: Lazy Evaluation and Nullary Metafunction

Hi All, I am reading about the lazy evaluation and nullary metafunction in the MPL book. While discussing the lazy evaluation technique the following code is presented (page 57): struct add_pointer_f { template <class T> struct apply : boost::add_pointer<T> {}; }; typedef mpl::vector<int, char*, double&> seq; typedef mpl::transform<seq, boost::add_pointer<_> > calc_ptr_seq; The point of the above code was to demonstrate that the nullary metafunction calc_ptr_seq represents the sequence "int*, char**, double&*", even though the last element in that sequence is not valid. Thanks to lazy evaluation. As long as we don't access the third element in the sequence represented by calc_ptr_seq, everything should work fine. Is my understanding correct? Also, other than nullary metafunction, is there any other approach to lazy evaluation? Or will lazy evaluation _always_ be implemented with the help of nullary metafunction? Thank you. Rgds, anna

We are porting the app to Linux from solaris and I do not want to try using the latest one as I am unaware of the dependencies. boost.program_options - reloading configuration file

Hello I want to implement function in my application which would allow me to reload the configuration file. [1.35] LINK problems since I switch to wpath

Hi, I'm still using Boost 1.35 on VC++ 2005 I had a code very well building and linking, only I had some charset problems at display. That's why I decided to switch my code to UNICODE (or like) switching all the std::string -> std::wstring In the area of boost, I also switched all the boost::filesystem::path -> boost::filesystem::wpath that was a long job, many particular cases were found for example, problemes with : boost::filesystem::exists boost::filesystem::current_path boost::filesystem::initial_path That I commented to compile. Here comes my main question !!!! Now I have some LINK problems. The librairy very well worked before, but no more now. See the error logs at the end. Iostreams tag dispatch failure?

Hi all, I've been trying to compile the container_source example from the boost/iostreams documentation for a couple of days actually without success. It seems to me that tag dispatching fails to dispatch the default (for any_tag) implementation for optimal_buffer_size( ), imbue( ) and flush( ). I'm using Visual C++ 2005 SP1. I saw one unanswered posting about this exact problem early 2007, but on GCC. So I guess from this that I'm missing something obvious. Thanks for any help. Steph. [range] iterator_range::size() requires a random access iterator?

Why does boost::iterator_range::size() require a random access iterator? The implementation is 'return m_End - m_Begin;' -- if this were changed to 'return std::distance(m_Begin, m_End);' then size() would work with any iterator type. This strikes me as an arbitrary limitation, or at the least a leaky abstraction. Is there a rationale here?

Hi, I noticed that there's a Google SOC 2006 library called Boost.Tree, which has an nary_tree implementation in it. However, I'm finding that this code does not compile at all. Are there any containers in boost (or perhaps elsewhere) that support tree structures with any number of children? Thanks.

build variant output directory

Hello, I was just wondering if there is some way of defining a variant's build output directory. The current build output directory nesting is just to deep for my project. Since I only have one debug variant and one release variant having a simple build output directory like: bin/debug bin/release would completely suffice. But instead boost build insists on storing everything in directories based on the selected feature set: bin\msvc-8.0\debug\threading-multi bin\msvc-8.0\release\debug-symbols-on\threading-multi Also notice the additional debug-symbols-on in the release build path since I selected to enable debug symbols for release builds. Hi All, I have a doubt regarding the arguments to the mpl::transform metafunction. In the MPL book (page 42), the mpl::transform is presented as follows: template <class Sequence1, class Sequence2, class BinaryOperation> struct transform; Here mpl::transform takes 2 sequences and a binary operation and it results in a sequence. But in a later portion of the book (page 124), while discussing about sequence building algorithms, the following is presented: typedef mpl::vector_c<int, 1, 2, 3> v123; typedef mpl::plus<_1, mpl::int_<5> > add5; typedef mpl::transform<v123, add5>::type v678; Here mpl::transform takes 1 sequence and a unary operation and it results in a sequence. My code must interact with a large third-party application with a ton of environmental variables that follow no particular naming convention, and I wanted to integrate the probe for those variables with my own command line so I could accept the environment as default but overwrite them from the command line using the same names (which are already documented by the third party and mostly familiar to the users). Having no accept_unregistered precludes that approach, and I have to use getenv() and do it by hand instead. It's not a hard workaround, just a day or two of work, but lacking accept_unregistered for only one of the three kinds of parser seems odd given the general elegance of the rest of your library. Hi, Suppose I have a thread running, I issue an interrupt(), and the thread starts to perform its cleanup code. As this may take some time, I'd like to know when the thread actually is stopped. Is there some standard approach on how to do this? I was thinking about testing if the thread object equals Not-a-Thread, but I've yet to find out how... Thanks! Koen

Hi, does the attached program write something to stdout for anyone? It should print out the bzip2-compressed version of the string "Original". It compiles fine but prints out exactly nothing. My platform is Ubuntu 8.04 64bit, gcc 4.2.3, using boost version 1.36, and bzip2 1.0.4. Any ideas? This could be very stupid question but I am stuck with this situation. I have class A derived from List and B derived from C. How do I write Serialize method for A? Hi All, I am trying to understand the implementation of mpl::vector. I have simplified greatly to help understand it. I am now trying to figure out how to represent an empty sequence. Cannot build debug-only with bjam?

Hi All, We are a Visual C++ shop (using vs2005 currently) and I would like to build boost with _SECURE_SCL=0 for release and _SECURE_SCL=1 for debug. I see there are only two options for the bjam --build-type command line option: minimal (which is release) and complete (which is debug+release). I would like to run bjam twice: once for release (with _SECURE_SCL=0) and once for debug (with _SECURE_SCL=1). Is there any way to do this? Note: I am fine with building both dynamics and statics for each configuration. I tried -build-type=debug but this doesn't work. Thanks, Jason.

The file it is complaining about exists and has mode bits 755. My configure line looks like: ./configure --prefix=/home/mecklen/work/boost-install --without-libraries=python --without-libraries=mpi --without-icu I'm not much of a bjam guy. Boost-1.36 with gcc stlport links against both libstlport_gcc.so and libstdc++.so.5

Thanks to Juergen Hunold's help, I was able to build Boost 1.36 on Linux-x86-32bit with gcc and stlport However, the boost lib seems to links against both "libstlport_gcc.so" and "libstdc++.so.5". serialization 1.36.0 extended_type_info exit issue(s)

Folks, I'm running some serialization unit-tests which pass with flying colors under 1.35.0 and earlier, however they seg-fault on exit when run through 1.36.0. The error appears to deal with destruction of extended_type_info_typeid objects, and *only* manifests itself when I load an archive through a shared_ptr<T>. The load will appear to function properly, then on exit of the application, <<Death>>. This occurs even if I remove BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT && BOOST_CLASS_TYPE_INFO as the shared_ptr is to the derived element, and I'm not testing through a base. Linker error with boost_1_36_0

Hi, I built the thread library after downloading "boost_1_36_0.zip". After building the thread library from bjam, when I build the program in VS2008, I get following linker error:- Error 1 fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'libboost_thread-vc90-mt-gd-1_36.lib' What I see in the generated library folder is that boost_thread-vc90-mt-gd-1_36.lib is generated, but the linker is looking for 'libboost_thread-vc90-mt-gd-1_36.lib'. I have already done the required changes in the project properties mentioned at http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_36_0/more/getting_started/windows.html . Similar thing happening with Regex library also. The generated lib is boost_regex-vc90-gd-1_36.lib, but the linker is looking for libboost_regex-vc90-gd-1_36.lib. Is there any other settings change required or something else? Thanks, Bhargav.

[Function] Encapsulated inside a class, won't initialize.

Hi there, I'm using boost::function defined private inside a class and then assign a function comming from another boost::function. But it don't work. A little code may help understand my pretty bad explanation. ####### class C { public: void Bind(boost::function<void()> f); private: boost::function<void()> func; }; void C::Bind(boost::function<void()> f) { func = f; //Compile, but raise an access violation. } ####### The problem seems obvious to me, func si not initialized correctly and swap() fail. Visual C++ 2003 and Boost 1.35

Hello! I'm having a problem with using Boost 1.35 on Visual C++ 2003 SP1. boost::noncopyable doesn't work

Hello, I have a very special problem concerning boost::noncopyable under Windows in a shared library. A class deriving from boost::noncopyable becomes copyable. Strange ? Here is the example code. static library link (unit test) to msvc 2008

Hi, I managed to make the static library work on msvc. some notes: 1.The compiler throws many exeptions on enable_if.hpp , although I had just included <unit_test.hpp>. As a work-around (hack?) #define BOOST_UTILITY_ENABLE_IF_HPP was used before inclusion. 2.The simple tests apparently works but I dont know how to manage dynamic ones (asserts) ; currently ( assert(x)-->Assert(x) ): #ifdef TEST_MODE # define Assert(x) BOOST_CHECK(x) #else # define Assert(x) do{}while(0) #endif There are some strange run time errors which debugging doesnt lead to exact code. Now any comments on these ? :)

Please try replacing the /boost/detail/allocator_utilities.hpp file in your local Boost copy with the attached file and rebuild the multi_index_container code that was failing. Does this fix it? If so, I'll commit this version into th= trunk so that it'll be available in Boost 1.38 (though you can use it now with your local Boost copy, of course).
