Hi there, I think there are some problems with binding functions if the class has a const and a non-const version of the same member. [config] policy for setting BOOST_HAS_THREADS?

Hello, What is the policy by which BOOST_HAS_THREADS gets defined or not? I'll review from a user standpoint. * On the documentation : - I am surprised to find very little information or rationale about multi-threading in documentation. We know the library is now "thread safe" but we don't know exactly what it means. There is only one MT use case (just) detailed in "tutorial" : what happens when a thread disconnect a slot from a signal, while another thread calls it. But there are another interesting MT use cases : - what if 2 threads simultaneously calls the same signal ? How to mutex slots in this case ? Are slots automatically excluded by an hidden mutex ? - What if a thread adds a slot to a signal while another calls it ? Is the slot added after signal call ? There should be tutorials and explanations for these cases, IMO. - About rationale : why is there special signals2::mutex ? May we use boost::thread::mutex for mutex template ? What are advantages/drawbacks of choosing signals2::mutex or boost::thread::mutex ? - Use of "postconstructible" or "predestructible" classes is rather obscure, and should be tutorialized / better documented. * On interface : - Very close from original signals interface : no particular comment. * On test suite / test cases : - I cannot see any MT test case (from the documentation, in "acceptance tests" section at least). It's rather surprising. I cannot imagine there is no test case for MT (calling a signal while disconnecting slot etc..). In particular, I'd whish to see if this library is robust in a multi-core environment and run test cases in this environment (I know cases where a library is perfectly thread safe on mono-core, even hyperthreading, but fails on multi-core). At least, there should be a rationale explaining why this library should be robust in a multi-core environment (especially with a proprietary signals2::mutex). * Final statement : All in all, I think this library is very close to be accepted as a Boost library, but without MT test cases and MT documentation, I can't give a total agreement for now. I have little doubt this library is MT tested and robust, even in a multi-core environment, but I have no real clue to assert it. Feel free to ask me further details. ICC and _syn_lock bug again

As shown here : http://lists.boost.org/Archives/boost/2008/06/138322.php There *was* a bug with intel Compiler and shared_ptr using the __sync_lock intrinsic. It has been fixed on ICC 9.x but today I tried to sue this with latest ICC 10.1.018 on ubuntu linux and got the very same error than in the original topic. Hello, I am using boost 1.37 and gcc 4.3.2. I am getting a very nasty error when I mix up boost headers and tr1 headers in one compilation unit. Asio acceptor : Multiple client connections on single port

I have a acceptor server which listens to various connections from clients. It creates one server object per client connection. I need the clients to connect to only one IP port of the server. [format] How to trigger compile-time error for mismatched arguments

Hi, I'm using boost::format library, and this may be obvious to those experienced users: is there any way to detect the mismatch of number of expected arguments in a boost::format object? Both of the following statements throw out runtime exceptions (which is correct): std::cout << boost::format ("%s %s") % "Hello"; std::cout << boost::format ("%s") % "Hello" % "world"; It'd be great if this type of parameter-mismatch error can be caught at compile-time, instead of run-time. We use boost::format library extensively for logging, and inevitably there're human errors like this mismatched number of arguments. IMHO, this kind of error should have been detected by compiler at build time, s.t. the developer won't be embarrassed by QA or customers at run-time. Actually, what's even worse is the following that doesn't generate error at all: std::cout << boost::format ("%s %s") % "Hello" % 12345; There's a type-mismatch ('char*' versus 'int') for the second argument, but there's neither compile-time nor run-time error. The output is "Hello 12345", which may be correct, but it may not be what the programmer intended to do. Any way of turning those typo into compile-time error? --- Jeffrey

Boost MPI + Serialization

Hi all, I am using Boost MPI and would like to send user-defined objects between processes. As the Boost MPI tutorial / documentation suggests (http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_37_0/doc/html/mpi/tutorial.html) I should use serialization and in this document, they show an example class gps_position which is a friend with boost::serialization::access. So far, I understand what's going on, but I don't know what is the next step. The example in the documentation stops there and says that the example continues in the Serialization document. It also just mentions that one could store it in many forms, such as XML on disk, in addition to sending it to processes. If all I want to do is send it between processes, which one of the formats listed in boost/archive/*.hpp should I use? In the Serialization document, it continues by creating a boost::archive::text_oarchive object. But, if I am sending things like vectors of unsigned integers and strings, a binary format should be more compact? Or does this not matter and sticking with the Serialization example is fine? [boost.python] Hello world example of is not working with msvc

Hi, I am reasonably sure that this is due to omission in the configuration file. I checkout from the trunk and all compilation went without problem. But the hello world example within the boost.python is failing with error: LINK : fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'boost_python-vc80-mt-gd-1_38.lib' call "f:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\VC\vcvarsall.bat" x86 >nul link /NOLOGO /INCREMENTAL:NO /DLL /DEBUG /subsystem:console /out:"bin\msvc-8.0\debug\hello_ext.pyd" /IMPLIB:"bin\msvc-8.0\debug\hello_ext.lib" /LIBPATH:"F:\CodeBase\Libs\Python-2.5.2\PCbuild8\win32release" @"bin\msvc-8.0\debug\hello_ext.pyd.rsp" .... .... >From what I can make that LIBPATH doesn't have path to boost_python-vc80-mt-gd-1_38.lib. Turn off versioning in Serialization

I am using serialization split member (save & load) and it works great. I am using a text archive, but I do not want the framework to put the "version header" in the string (e.g. 22 serialization::archive 4 1303 ). I want to simply serialize the string and handle the versioning myself in the load function. Is there a way to turn this off? If not, where can I find detailed documentation on implementing a custom archive or build in another type of serialization (other than binary and xml nvp)? I have looked through mailing lists and documentation but I don't see a detailed description of how to extend the design. Brian

I downloaded boost.extensions from http://boost-extension.blogspot.com/?gclid=CNjp5dfJ2JUCFQsZQgod0mHbWg When I tried the first example (the shared_library one) in the tutorial, I realized that the macro BOOST_EXTENSION_EXPORT_DECL didn't prevent c++ name mangling for the example function. I had to add extern "C" before void manually. And in the second tutorial (the animals tutorial) BOOST_EXTENSION_TYPE_MAP_FUNCTION seems to be called, but when I get the map from main, it is empty. The library is found (LD_LIBRARY_PATH is set so that it finds the library) but it does not work. Thank you. Tested in gcc 4.3.2 under ubuntu 8.10. Can somebody help me ?

Hello, I'm using the boostpro installer and noticed the static runtime multithread builds for VC8.0 of the Boost Signals (and several other) libraries are missing. All builds are available for both VC7.1 and VC9.0. I have also tried building the current boost version (although I haven't gone deep into the details of the build process) and at a glance it seems the multithread static runtime library variants are not built here either (I'm missing libboost_signals-vc80-mt-sgd-1_36.lib and libboost_signals-vc80-mt-s-1_36.lib). [type_traits] is_convertible bug with gcc 4.3.0

I'm playing with move semantics (still/again). The following program compiles and runs fine with msvc8 but does not compile with gcc 4.3.0 when ENABLE_IS_CONVERTIBLE_CHECK is defined. Should it? The problem has something to do with U's copy constructor being private. A lot of warnings with Boost.Filesystem

Dear boosters, I got 25 warnings in total from "boost/filesystem/path.hpp" and "boost/filesystem/operations.hpp" about "comparison between signed and unsigned integer expressions". This is because the type of dot<Path>::value (and the likes, e.g slash<Path>::value) is char regardless of the type of Path::value_type, which is an unsigned integral type in case of wchar_t. Obviously, they are not errors but for me, these 25 warnings are too much and unfriendly. I hope this will be fixed in future version of Boost. Thank you for reading this. asio 10022 error

Hi, I am using boost 1.36.0 asio. I have to connect to several ip/ports within my application, asio successfully connects to some ips/ports while it throws an error with code 10022, "An invalid argument was supplied". Concurrency and session termination in boost::asio

Hello, I'm experimenting with boost::asio as the basis for communications and event handling for a network server. The server will support many clients, and should scale well to machines with multiple processors/cores, so I'd like to use thread pools to execute requests. I've done this by calling io_service.run() from multiple threads, which seems to be the normal way to do it. Each client session always has an asynchronous read operation waiting for new commands. If the server has a notification for a thread, it will send it by starting an asynchronous write on that session. Notifications can come at any time, not just in response to a request, so it is common for a session to simultaneously have oustanding asynchronous read and write requests. Sessions are terminated when the socket is closed or when the client sends a quit command. I'm trying to make sure that my handling of session termination is threadsafe. It seems that the normal way to handle this is to detect an error or end-of-file in an asynchronous event handler, then delete the object to end the session. Because my server is using a threadpool and waiting for both read and write events, it is possible for a read and write callback to be running concurrently on different CPUs. In that case, if one of those callbacks detects an error and deletes the object, the other will continue running using an invalid object. In a simple echo server I wrote to learn about boost::asio, I can see these invalid accesses when running under valgrind with a large number of clients, so unless I have made an error in my server, this appears to be a real problem. I rewrote it to have write errors handled by closing the session, which causes the read callback to run, notice the session has been closed, and delete the object. This seemed to solve the problem, but it still seems there is a potential problem if the read callback finishes deleting the object while the write callback is running. Is there a better way to handle session termination? Can I use io_service::strand to prevent this by having the readers and writers for the same session running in the same strand? I want to use the boost threading library in an application. Looking through the documentation, I have a questions. a) in the examples I find "boost::mutex::scoped_lock" but I don't find this in the documentation. It looks like this is called "lock_guard". The command option I would like to use is: -s 23 6543 When trying to do this the following error occurs. Yesterday, all in one day, I had to make my first use of the Boost Date Time library, the Threads library, and the Random Number library. As has been my experience in the past, all of them were easy to use and they just worked as advertised for my application. We all know that the libraries aren't perfect, or there would be hardly any traffic on this list. :-) But I would like to say thank you to all of the people involved in developing and releasing the libraries. All I have to do is #include <boost/asio.hpp>. I tried boost 1.35 and boost 1.37 with Visual Studio 2008. If it is included, InstallShield's RegSpyUI (or it's "Extract COM Interface" step) gets bad Winsock2 registry settings. When InstallShield applies those settings, it screws up the machine. Most notably, DNS is disabled. The registry settings that appear are: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ System\ CurrentControlSet\ Services\ WinSock2\ Parameters\ WinSock_Registry_version==>2.0 NameSpace_Catalog5\ Num_Catalog_Entries==>0 Serial_Access_Num==>1 Catalog_Entries\ Protocol_Catalog9\ Num_Catalog_Entries==>0 Next_Catalog_Entry_ID==>-23 Serial_Access_Num==>1 Catalog_Entries\ I don't know where they come from. MSCV8 gives this warning when compiling Boost.Regex 1.37.0 under Windows x86 (32 Bit): libs\regex\src\..\src\cregex.cpp(563) : warning C4309: 'static_cast' : truncation of constant value The code that produces the warning: #ifdef BOOST_HAS_LONG_LONG const std::size_t RegEx::npos = static_cast<std::size_t>(~0ULL); #else const std::size_t RegEx::npos = static_cast<std::size_t>(~0UL); #endif In Windows x86 sizeof(unsigned long long int) is 8, sizeof(std::size_t) is 4 and BOOST_HAS_LONG_LONG is defined. Therefore "~0ULL" is truncated from 8 to 4 bytes. Maybe a better trigger would be the architecture (32 Bit or 64 Bit) since in all environments I know sizeof(std::size_t) equals the architecture. [bjam] Generated path approaches 255 character OS limit

When compiling Boost 1.37.0 using this bjam command line under Windows I obtained the error message below: bjam -q -sNO_COMPRESSION=1 --build-type=complete --without-graph --without-math --without-mpi --without-python --without-serialization --without-signals --without-wave --toolset=msvc-8.0 architecture=x86 address-model=64 failed to write output file 'bin.v2\libs\test\build\msvc-8.0\debug\address-model-64\architecture-x86\asynch-exceptions-on\link-static\runtime-link-static\threading-multi\libboost_prg_exec_monitor-vc80-mt-sgd-1_37.lib.rsp'! Obviously the path I started from (70 characters) combined with the bjam generated path (192 characters) exceeds the OS limit of 255 characters per filename. Does the bjam generated path really have to be this long? Can I shorten it somehow? If future versions of bjam encode even more information into the generated path it may not be possible to build Boost even when building in directory C:\Boost. Regards, Peter.

Multiple compiler & platform support.

One of the things that drew me to use boost is that is supports so many compilers and platforms that can be mixed and matched. I am creating a library on top of boost and Arabica. I want this library I am creating to support all the compilers and platforms that boost does. What is the easiest way to do this? Do I have to duplicate much of the config and decl stuff? Has anyone done this and have some advice? brian

[Multi-index] hash_unique memory consumption vs std::map

In my application I need to load millions of vertices into a graph. I'm using BGL for this. Each edge has around 20-30 attributes associated with it and each attribute has a unique ID (not necessarily sequential or 0-based). I'm currently using this multi_index_container for the attributes: typedef detail::mutable_pair<long, _variant_t> id_attribute_pair_type; typedef boost::multi_index_container < id_attribute_pair_type, boost::multi_index::indexed_by < boost::multi_index::hashed_unique<boost::multi_index::member<id_attribute_pair_type, long, &id_attribute_pair_type::first> > > > map_type; which emulates: typedef std::map<long, _variant_t> map_type; If I check memory consumption after loading the graph using multi_index I'm at 190MB. Using std::map it's at 124MB. I realize this is because std::map is perfectly sized and a hashmap will grow in chunks, but is there a way I can reserve a size ahead of time since I know exactly how many attributes there will be? My graph loading performance does not seem to change between multi_index and map, however subsequent search operations (shortest_path, etc) seem to favor multi_index. Thanks for such a great library. I am using asynchronous operations, but i have an issue, I'd like to trigger a *fast *client side deconnexion when the peer disappear (is reset for example) So far, the deconnexion occurs on an error on a asynchronous read operation, but this error happens like 10-12 seconds after the physical deconnexion occured. Is there a way to set the "time out" value ? Is there another way to detected that the peer vanished. Regards, Mathieu

error C2440: 'reinterpret_cast' : InterlockedCompareExchange from detail\interlocked.hpp

Apparently, the signature of this function has changed. When we used it under Visual Studio 6.0 it compiled correctly however, the following happens in MS VS 2008: The following error appears error C2664: 'InterlockedCompareExchange' : cannot convert parameter 2 from 'PVOID' to 'LONG' If I just do a cast, I get: error C2440: 'reinterpret_cast' : cannot convert from 'DWORD' to 'long'. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance. [date_time] dst_local_start_time

Hello I'm confused about the returned time of the dst_local_start_time() function. First of all I don't understand why a ptime is returned and not a local_date_time, buy anyway. The ptime I get returned for the timezone Europe/Zurich for 2007 is: 2007-Mar-25 02:00:00 Assuming that this is a UTC time, the local time in Zurich would then be 2007-Mar-25 04:00:00 (because during summertime, Zurich is 2h ahead of UTC), but the correct local dst start time would be 2007-Mar-25 03:00:00 (because the clocks are shifted from 2 to 3). To correctly calculate the dst start time, I have to add the dst_offset to the returned time_of_day. Hey everyone, I'm in desperate need of some help here. I'm working on a webcrawler for a computer science class and I'm using boost::regex to parse some of the html elements. After calling a few boost::regex functions, I get this error. It doesn't seem to be tied to any specific funcion, but it seeems to come up after a certain number of calls to the functions. Boost::Serialize, serializing std::basic_string

I have a variable which is a basic_string, as I want my own allocator assigned to it. This gives me the following compiler error: "Error 3 error C2039: 'serialize' : is not a member of 'std::basic_string<_Elem,_Traits,_Ax>' ...\boost\serialization\access.hpp 109" I have searched around for this error but have not been able to find a solution. It would be possible to just pass a vector with chars in it, but basic_string is preferred. Has anyone else had this problem and maybe managed to solve it? /Jacob Holm

Hello All, During migrating my project under new development environment I face out following issue: ambiguous unqualified 'shared_ptr' name resolution. For example in .cpp files I using several usings such as: using namespace std; using namespace std::tr1; using namespace boost; In source code I have something like this: shared_ptr<SomeType> var = /*...*/; And for each such line I have an error: error C2872: 'shared_ptr' : ambiguous symbol could be 'c:\program files\microsoft visual studio 9.0\vc\include\memory(1392) : std::tr1::shared_ptr' or 'c:\program files\microsoft visual studio 9.0\vc\include\memory(1392) : std::tr1::shared_ptr' or 'p:\projects\common\boost_1.36.0\boost\shared_ptr.hpp(165) : boost::shared_ptr' What I have to do to avoid this errors for boost 1.36 except explicit share_ptr qualification? [boost 1.36]: Problems with bjam option --buildid

Hello, a colleague of mine currently checks whether transition to boost 1.36 (or upcoming 1.37) would be feasible for us. Still being on 1.33.1, we manipulated the bjam files to realize something that we hope can now be done with the build option --buildid using the *non-manipulated* bjam files. A recent test using the command line bjam --build-dir=XX --buildid=asdf --toolset=msvc --build-type=complete stage where XX corresponds to a valid path causes a quick bjam build error (but removing the part " --buildid=asdf" works fine), as shown below. Let me add that the used bjam.exe was created based on the sources provided by the very same boost 1.36 (build.bat). Does anyone have an idea what's going wrong here? problems with boost in eclipse

Hello -- I extracted Boost.Filesystem using the BCP tool, so I could add it to my Xcode project without having to precompile. It worked great! Only problem is that I decided to move my project to Eclipse. Now, when I compile, I keep getting the following error: Description: 'BOOST_UTF8_BEGIN_NAMESPACE' does not name a type Resource: boost/libs/detail/utf8_codecvt_facet.cpp Anyone know how I might try to get this to work in Eclipse? [asio] question about binding member function as WaitHandler

The documentation's example 4 uses boost::bind to create a handler for deadline_timer::async_wait(). The function bound, printer::print(), takes no parameter and the code compiles and works fine. I tried modifying the example so that, instead of creating a new, temporary function object in place for each call to async_wait(), it creates a single boost::function object as a data member in the ctor, which is then passed in each call. Using MSVS 2005 and boost 1.37 I found that I had to add a boost::system::error_code& parameter to print() in order to get it to compile. Want to use Boost in our projects. We are using Fedora linux. I know Fedora has included Boost in its distribution but I plan to have my project only use the Boost lib included in my project resource tree but not the one included in the OS. That is I plan to have my project totally self-contained without any dependence on OS in terms of Boost lib. What's the right way to do that? Any input will be appreciated. thanks, James

[serialization] Polymorphism?

Hi, I have a class named Bar which derives from a class named Foo. Both Foo and Bar are serializable, and thus they both have the respective serialize() functions. However, if I do the following, you will not get a polymorphic call since you cannot have virtual template members in a class (The serialize() function must be a template according to the Boost.Serialization docs). Foo* f = new Bar; f->serialize(); Note that you wouldn't call serialize() directly like this, I'm simply doing it to prove a point. At some point Boost.Serialization is going to want to call the Serialize() function off of my Foo object, however it will not call Bar::serialize() as I would expect since I cannot make serialize() virtual. How would I provide polymorphic serialization of objects in Boost.Serialization? Thanks.

Building boost 1.37 (Regex with ICU) problem with MSVC9 x64

Hi, I am unable to cleanly fully build boost 1.37 with ICU for regex for x64 on Windows with MSVC++ 2008. I first tried building with MSVS 2008 SP1 on Windows XP SP3 with ICU 4.0. Building x86 versions first, there were a number of link error, so I (copy & then) renamed icudt.lib, icuin.lib, icuind.lib, and icuind.pdb to icudata.lib & icui18n* as a comment suggested on a website I found via Google. That fixed the x86 errors. I did the same with the x64 ICU files, and try building, but got 4 link errors. D:\boost_1_37_0>bjam --without-mpi --toolset=msvc --build-dir=x64 --build-type=complete -sHAVE_ICU=1 -sICU_PATH="...." stage Because I had a few post-building error cross building ICU to x64 as it runs some build'd .exe that obviously can't run on x86 Windows, I preceeded to try building Boost.Regex on Windows XP x64 SP2 (running inside VMWare), again with MSVS 2008 SP1. Cleanly build ICU 4.0, copy & renamed the libs as above, before building: C:\boost_1_37_0>bjam --with-regex --toolset=msvc --build-type=complete -sHAVE_ICU=1 -sICU_PATH="C:\icu" stage The errors that resulted are essentially the same as before. Boost.MPI problems with non-PODs

I am having some problems getting boost::mpi working with our local installation of openmpi 1.2.3 here at Los Alamos. I am able to send POD's through the interface, but it fails sending anything more complicated (i.e. std::string). Have I missed some step in the process? I get the following error when I tried the 2nd example from the on-line Tutorial ... terminate called after throwing an instance of 'boost::exception_detail::clone_impl<boost::exception_detail::error_info_injector<boost::mpi::exception> >' what(): MPI_Alloc_mem: MPI_ERR_NO_MEM: out of memory Also, I was unable to build a single threaded version of libboost_mpi which struck me as odd. Hi, I'm a beginner in using boost asio library (and coding c++ too :). I am currently trying to code a simple application that handles some communication with a server through TCP/IP connection. My I/O Class has two threads that use synchronous socket operations on the same socket (which is a member of the class) Main thread: CApplication::Close() - socket.close() CApplication::Open() - socket.open(boost::asio::ip::tcp::v4()); - socket.write_some(boost::asio::buffer(initial_command)); - socket.read_some(boost::asio::buffer(initial_command_reply)); CApplication::Write(data from another class) - m_Socket.write_some Workerthread: CApplication::thread_Run() do { - socket.read_some(boost::asio::buffer((void *)&character, 1)); - package bytes to messages and pass them on to another class } while (!bClosed) My question is that is it safe to call write_some and read_some from different threads without synchronization. The application is now working w/o problems but I need to be sure that this is a safe way to do this before continuing development. [asio] synchronous mode, timeouts and boost::thread

Hello *, asio (at least in boost release 1.35) does not support timeouts on synchronous socket operations. What happens if I start a sync read operation from a separate boost thread and interrupt the thread after some certain period of time? This worked fine with gcc 4.3 on a 32 bit Gentoo Linux, but I would like to know if this is a bad style to make so. I understand that a thread must be in one of the interruptable states. I came across a difference in behavior for Boost.Function between g++ 4.2 and 4.3, and I was wondering whether my usage was incorrect. I'm using default parameters in much the same way as the sample test.cc below. It compiles on 4.2, and does not on 4.3. I think I can see why perhaps it shouldn't have worked, but I'm just looking for a security blanket. Hi, I'm trying to multiply a vector by a matrix. On the other hand, if this is essentially how the documentation has been structured for years, it's unlikely there's any need to change it. * Compiler versions and preferred-form table: I wonder if, instead of maintaining a list of which compilers do support the preferred syntax, it would not be easier to just maintain a list of those which do not support it, especially since it looks to be that only broken compilers don't. * Slot ordering examples: In the intermediate example of ordering slots, I wasn't able to change the order my signal was displayed after reading the material a few times. It always came last, no matter what order I added it in. I was able to do it, but it was by using the numeric ordering I'd learned in the beginner section. In my own test program, I tried: // ... Hello, I'm searching for a good solution for the following problem of making a pair of a string and a pointer to a member function. --- struct foo1 { int bar1( int ); void bar2( ); }; int main() { someobject.set_string( &foo1::bar1, "foobar1" ); someobject.set_string( &foo1::bar2, "foobar2" ); string = someobject.get_string( &foo1::bar1 ); pointer = someobject.get_pointer( "foobar2" ); } --- The conversion of the string to the function pointer is possible, when the function pointer is stored in some wrapper like mem_fn. But the other way is more complicated. Since the member function pointers are each types of their own, the pointers cannot be compared and therefore cannot directly be stored in some list. Mem_fn also doesn't seem to do this job. Using some compiler dependent extension also isn't useful. Using templated overloads does work for the conversion of member function pointer to string - to some extent: --- global template for setting the string: template< typename foobar1_pointer_type, foobar1_pointer_type foobar1_pointer> std::string overloaded_template() { return "foobar1"; } local call for getting the string: string = overloaded_template<foobar1_pointer_type, &foo1::bar1>() --- But this solution has way too much overhead and doesn't provide the call in the form of "someobject.get_string(pointer)" because of the typed template parameter. It is possible to use macros to make it look better and type less, but macros are ugly and don't solve the problem properly. So does anyone know a good way to store a string-pointer-pair, so that it can be accessed by the corresponding member function pointer? The solution should work with GCC4.4 for now and can use the c++0x-extensions since i use them anyways. Kind regards, Siegfried Kettlitz

I am struggling to try to get bind/function working like I want. Some code first though: 1. We have a POD object. namespace POD{ class POD{};} 2. We have another class that wants to do something with a POD*. namespace Alpha{ class MethodsInHere{ void doesSomething(POD::POD* arg0){} };} 3. We have a third class, essentially a function handler, that has a boost::function reference whose signature matches the method in #2, and a constructor which wants to set the reference. namespace EventHandler{ class EventHandler{ public: EventHandler(boost::function<void (POD::POD*)>& function): assign_to_me(function){} boost::function<void (POD::POD*)>& assign_to_me; };} 4. Finally, we have an initialization class. This class wants to instantiate the EventHandler object, and to do so needs to bind the method in #2 to pass in as an argument. POD::POD* instance = new POD::POD(); Alpha::MethodsInHere mih; EventHandler eh(boost::bind(&Alpha::MethodsInHere::doesSomething, ????, _1)) -------- My question is basically if this is possible. I was having a ton of trouble getting this to work, and after digging through some docs it seems like the '?????' in line of code in #4 needs to be a reference to eh . . . which isn't constructed yet. If I'm wrong, please tell me how to construct this bind properly. If I'm right, what sort of workaround could solve this?

Boost + STLPort + msvc8.0

I've read the boost build manual section on building with STLPort and a number of other posts, but nothing seems to help. I have modified user_config.jam to contain using stlport : 5.1.6 : c:\\projects\\STLPort-5.1.6\\stlport c:\\projects\\STLPort-5.1.6\\lib ; and am building with bjam --build-dir="c:\temp\build-boost" --toolset=msvc-8.0 stdlib=stlport-5.1.6 threading=multi --with-serialization -a -d2 release stage However, it fails to build libboost_serialization-vc80-mt-p-1.36.0.lib, with errors propagating from ====== BEGIN OUTPUT ====== EXIT STATUS: -1073741515 ====== END OUTPUT ====== ...failed testing.capture-output c:\projects\build-boost\boost\bin.v2\libs\config\test\all\no_std_locale_ pass.test\msvc-8.0\release\stdlib-stlport-5.1.6\threading-multi\no_std_l ocale_pass.run... I would think the value in the constructor should be bind(&Alpha::MethodsInHere::doesSomething, mih, _1) When you bind a non-static method, the first argument must be something with which you can call the method. That would not be eh. Of course, you have will have lifetime or copy issues with mih, but I presume you have arrangements for that and we're just seeing some simplified code. std-in/out communication with child process

Hi, I'd like to open a child process within my main process and send info to its stdin and get info from its stdout/stderr. It would be handy for the unit testing suite for a compiler. It would compile some source-code to a binary, start the binary as a child process and test it. Is there a way in C++ and/or Boost to do this? Thanks! -- Michiel Helvensteijn

I ran into these same types of errors when I was trying to use kruskal's minimum spanning tree algorithm. This error from your output: error: cannot convert `boost::detail::error_property_not_found' to `long int' in assignment indicates that there is a property that is not defined in your graph, but that is needed by the kolmogorov_max_flow() function. There's two options: 1) Use the internal properties, kolmogorov_max_flow() will use them. 2) Use bundled properties, you must explicitly tell komogorov_max_flow() which property is which using bgl_named_params. You've probably already noticed that the code listing here does not work (as it appears your example is based from it): http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_36_0/libs/graph/doc/kolmogorov_max_flow.html For one thing, there's a typo in the #include line, but also it is incomplete and leads to all the errors you listed. The code listed here actually works: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_36_0/libs/graph/example/kolmogorov-eg.cpp So you might prefer to use that as a base. Of course, it uses internal properties, and the documentation indicates that bundled properties are the preferred method now. For bundled properties, you would do something like this: struct Node { std::string name; long index; boost::default_color_type color; long distance; graph_traits<Graph>::edge_descriptor predecessor; }; struct Arc { long capacity; long residual; graph_traits<Graph>::edge_descriptor rev; }; and then call the function like so: flow = kolmogorov_max_flow(g, s, t, capacity_map(get(&Arc::capacity, g)). residual_capacity_map(get(&Arc::residual, g)). reverse_edge_map(get(&Arc::rev, g)). predecessor_map(get(&Node::predecessor, g)). color_map(get(&Node::color, g)). distance_map(get(&Node::distance, g)). vertex_index_map(get(&Node::index, g)) ); Note that each named parameter is separated by a period, not a comma. I am not able to get an error free compile using bundled properties - but by making the above changes it gets you down to about 2 errors. Maybe you can figure out the last steps (I can't). I stuck with using the internal properties because I had an example that worked, and the documentation on how to get bundled properties working with the functions is lacking.

I had the same problem and came on this thread. I'm sorry but Robert's reply is missing the point: we the users want to get the job done, and in this age base64 behavior is defined by RFC 2045 and 3548. Those documents provide the answer to the problem you describe below, and the accepted behavior we want. Each byte is translated backinto binary as 3 bits + 3 bits + 3 bits - 9 bits which turns out to be 2 bytes. So our original bitstream has been extended from 8 bits to 16. In the serialization library I record first the total number of bytes and and send that first. The iterator "stack" I use to translate is terminated by a count rather than some special "end" iterator. To me this problem is inherent in the base 64 encoding scheme as I understand it. ASIO io_service behaviour

Hi all, I have got some code to test the behavior of io_service. However these functions were called in reverse order. It is as though the underlying queue mechanism is actually a stack. Boost regex does't work

Hi, I'm a new user of boost. I have a trouble to use boost. I downloaded boost_1_36_0 and put it on directory where I prefer. To use with eclipse, I set the path. Property->c/c++build->settings->GCC C++ compiler->directories Some functions like boost/tokenizer or boost/lexical_cast is working well, but only the function boost/regex doesn't work. Compile is finished safely, but once I tried to run, an error is appear ,and the process stops. Undefined symbols: "boost::basic_regex<char, boost::regex_traits<char, boost::cpp_regex_traits<char> > >::do_assign(char const*, char const*, unsigned int)", referenced from: boost::basic_regex<char, boost::regex_traits<char, boost::cpp_regex_traits<char> > >::assign(char const*, char const*, unsigned int)in main.o ld: symbol(s) not found collect2: ld returned 1 exit status Would someone have ideas to use boost/regex on eclipse? Hi, I am missing something regarding the correct calling convention for Dijkstra algorithm. Here is the relevant part of the code: typedef boost::associative_property_map< std::map<Vertex, int> > intmapt; typedef boost::associative_property_map< std::map<Vertex, Vertex> > nodemapt; dijkstra_visitor<null_visitor> mynullvis; dijkstra_shortest_paths<Graph, dijkstra_visitor<null_visitor>, nodemapt, intmapt, intmapt, nodemapt, std::less<int>, std::plus<int>, std::numeric_limits<int>, std::numeric_limits<int> > (G, v, predmap, distmap, weightmap, indexmap, std::less<int>(), std::plus<int>(), std::numeric_limits<int>::max(), 0, mynullvis); I get an error as no matching function call dijkstra_shortest_paths. Appreciate some pointers as what could possibly be wrong. Thanks sandeep
