Steven: beautifully simple code on your previous post. I just fear that MPL is beyond the reach of mortals such as myself because I could never come up with that solution. If people are in the mood for this kind of stuff, let me post on a set of questions coming up in my libraries: 1) QUESTION 1: MANAGING DERIVATIVES FOR FUNCTIONS * I am doing a lot of work with functions that may have an associated derivative analytically or numerically determined. * This is the tip of the iceberg in associating a bunch of information with a mathematical function that all needs to be bundled. * I have been creating functors like the following: template <class ParamType> struct square{ typedef double result_type; //For adaptors double operator()(double x, const ParamType& params ) { return x*x;} double gradient(double x, const ParamType& params ){return 2 * x;} boost::function<double (double,const ParamType& params)> gradient(){return boost::bind(&square::gradient, *this, _1, _2)}; //I forget the exact notation for bind with member functions, but the idea is that it would return a boost::function. }; //Analytical derivative But I would also love the ability to use finitedifference or autodifferentiation algorithms for more complicated examples. I am going to have a million permutations on this kind of pattern, am writing very generic algorithms, and would prefer not to have to write a superclass for every permutation of parameters. I want to be able to freely bind to it, easily use lambdas, and eventually want to add a bunch of other traits such as # of derivatives, range/domain, continuity, hessians, etc. that can be uniformly managed. 4) QUESTION 4: AM I INSANE? Is this at all possible or has something similar been done? It seems to me that it might be, but I am likely not be capable of doing it. Is piggybacking boost::function in some smart way here the best approach? Even if we can't subclass directly, can we copy the source code and intelligently add in a few extra functions, etc.?

Works now, but you should definitely add that to the documentation. If you have knowledge of the boost's date/time features beforehand, it would seem obvious. But, as in my case, I only looked at boost's date/time features in order to get the timeout to work with interprocess, so I lacked the entire picture. A small footnote would have made it a lot clearer. Great library, thanks for the help.

reversible_ptr_container question

I am using ptr_vector and tried to get last element from the vector using rbegin() - which apparently is not supported by ptr_vector unless I missed smth. After some search I found "reversible_ptr_container" in #include <boost/ptr_container/detail/reversible_ptr_container.hpp> I have my doubts if this is the one I should use because it is not easily found in the documentation and buried in the "details". The questions are: 1. For rbegin() relative to ptr_vector - should I employ reversible_ptr_containier? If yes then short example will be highly appreciated. 2. How to get last element from ptr_vector (not using --end())?

Hi I'm trying to create some code based on the code of the socket tutorial of the boost website. The code to create a UDP socket which will send datagram is the following one : boost::asio::io_service io_service; udp::resolver resolver(io_service); udp::resolver::query query(udp::v4(), argv[1], "daytime"); udp::endpoint receiver_endpoint = *resolver.resolve(query); udp::socket socket(io_service); socket.open(udp::v4()); But, to send something else than a Daytime request, I need to know what are the avalaible option to put instead of "daytime" in this line : udp::resolver::query query(udp::v4(), argv[1], "daytime"); Unfortunately and as far sa I know, the documentation is quite light about that. [asio] Reading datagram packets

Is it possible to read the extra data that wasn't added to the buffer when a datagram is received ? E.g. given an initial receive instruction something like: char m_buf[10]; udp::endpoint m_endpoint; <--> udpSocket.async_receive_from(buffer(buf), m_endpoint, bind(ReadHandler, ...)); service.run(); If more than 10 characters were in the datagram packet, how can they be accessed? Calling other read methods (after processing in the ReadHandler) just appears to block (I guess it is looking for another packet). Surely I don't have to ensure the buffer is as large as I'll ever need it to be?

I'm using boost svn 50746 (latest at time of writing), on 32-bit Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex, with gcc/g++ 4.3.2 This is a simple test case showing that for some reason, message_queue::timed_receive is returning immediately for me, not throwing an exception, but just returning false which signifies that the timeout has been reached. Preserving mtime with filesystem lib

Is there a portable way to use the boost filesystem library to copy files and preserve mtimes? I am writing a tool that moves media files around and mtime can be significant when other sources of metadata are absent (like exif, iptc, xmp). Hi, I need to use several compilers for my project for different target computers. I have built boost 1.37 for gcc 4.1.2 and 3.4.3 and everything seems to be nicely set up as <boost_dir>/lib/libboost_xxx-gcc34-mt-1_37.so and <boost_dir>/lib/libboost_xxx-gcc41-mt-1_37.so. Is there anyway of automatically detecting which version to link? I suppose that gcc --version and some sort of awk script could do this. thanks dan

[date time] Querying current time zone settings.

Hi all! I'm using boost::posix_time::second_clock::local_time() to retrieve my current local time, and then using operator<< to stream the resulting ptime. I'd like to add to the output my local time zone (as configured in the underlying OS). Be it just a time difference or (better) a region (like "America/New_York"). I have been looking but didn't find how to to it. The class ptime doesn't include the time zone; and all the other examples I've seen in to docs work with an explicitly used time zone in the code. For example: time_zone_ptr zone( new posix_time_zone("MST-07") ); local_date_time ldt = local_sec_clock::local_time(zone); And, for instance, in the docs about I/O it can be seen "%q ISO time zone (output only). This flag is ignored when using the time_facet with a ptime.". There's also a boost::date_time::c_local_adjustor (which warns about "This class assumes that timezone settings of the machine are correct. This can be a very dangerous assumption."), but doesn't help me much. By now, I can use (also) boost::posix_time::second_clock::universal_time() to infer my time zone. [boost][interprocess] upgradable_mutex is semi-recursive...

The subject is misleading, but hopefully eye-catching :-) I do understand that this is not an interprocess bug, but more of a result of how upgradeable locks work. But the behavior can be dangerous, as will be seen. What I've got happening is that one process locks the mutex recursively (sharable, of course). And this works (most of the time), since it is okay to lock the mutex shareably any number of times (even if it is within the same thread). But the problem occurs when a writer (in another thread) manages to get inbetween these lockings, when we get this sequence thread A locks mutex shareably thread B waits for exclusive lock thread A waits for sharable lock Since the upgradable mutex is written so that if there is an exclusive locker waiting it doesnt let any more sharable lockers in this will deadlock. Something that explains this could be useful in the interprocess documentation. Or, maybe the problem could be solved. I see two ways: 1. Detect recursive sharable locking, so that my thread A would always get an exception when trying to lock a lock that I've already got (it is a recipe for disaster) 2. Allow recursive sharable locks. If you've got the lock it's okay to take it again. Since I'm not really a fan of recursive locking (the above locking is a mistake, really) I think I would prefer solution 1 of these two. (I'm fixing my code to not be recursive now, but I thought this might be of interest to either Ion or anyone using boost interprocess.) Cheers Lars

[boost program options] missing value validation

If I have a parameter which needs a value, but the value is not specified in the command line, I get an unknown exception in VisualStudio 2005. Meaning, if I declare a --compression=something, but then call the program with just --compression, the exception is thrown at the po::store() method. How do I intercept this and validate? Does anybody can describe what happens with the development process of support of WM 5-6x and WinCE 5-6? What is the current state of affairs? It would make boost more popular if boost supports (either particular, but official) such modern and famous mobile platforms like Symbian (S60), WM (5 and above), WinCE (5 and especially 6), Android. I understand that it's rather difficult to support such a different case of platforms, but boost (for me) ~ Standard C++ Library, and if Qt supports S60 3rd edition, WM 5-6, WinCE 5-6, Linux Embedded - why boost can't? boost::interprocess shared memory performance

This is my first experience with using shared memory for anything more than trivial IPC. Thanks again to Ion Gaztañaga for getting the library working on FreeBSD. I'm developing initially on OS-X 10.5.6 with boost_trunk, but the eventual target platform is FreeBSD--I'm just an old mac programmer used to cushy development tools. I originally used managed_mapped_file, and got everything working, but I was disappointed by performance. Profiling with shark, I found that the application was spending a lot of time in msync, which according to man(2) is used to synchronize mapped memory with the filesystem. It makes sense to me that the interprocess containers I was creating could have a lot of file I/O overhead, and managed_mapped_file was probably not a good choice. So I rewrote the code to use managed_shared_memory instead of managed_mapped_file, thinking that it would eliminate the file I/O and therefore be faster. However, I am surprised that it is not much faster, and when I profile with Shark on os-x I see that it is still spending a lot of time in msync, specifically whenever a managed_shared_memory object is destroyed. (in boost::interprocess::mapped_region::flush(unsigned long, unsigned long), which is called within basic_managed_shared_memory's destructor) Does managed_shared_memory really need to call msync? I see that I should optimize my code to cache the managed_shared_memory objects so that fewer create/deletes are necessary, but this is still going to happen fairly frequently and I wonder if this expensive msync call is necessary. In the tradition of coder forums everywhere, someone will probably ask what I'm trying to accomplish and whether there may be a better way. Suggestions welcome. I'm writing a little cgi driven database utility that queries data stored in a filesystem directory using a simple query language. I would like to keep indexes of the data to speed query resolution. The utility is old-school cgi, so all its resources (such as indexes) have to be instantiated into memory each time the cgi process is started. I could write indexes to files, but then I incur a de/serialization overhead that is expensive. My intention was to keep the indexes as ready-to-use interprocess::maps in shared memory, to be used by all invocations of the cgi. It works, but the performance of the shared memory is poor enough that I'm not getting much increase over just doing a brute force search through the datafiles. All suggestions appreciated! Andy

Transferring files across a network.

We have a situation where there are several computers that have a folder where files are periodically deposited. Currently, in each computer, this folder is scanned periodically and the files are parsed by a program that then sends the SQL data to a central machine where there is postgresql server running. The files are generally small because they are compressed. But the uncompressing and subsequent parsing into SQL strings dramatically inflates the amount of data that is sent across the network. What I am thinking of doing is sending the all the files to a directory on the central machine then parsing them there for subsequent inclusion into the database. So I need a program to periodically scan the folder on the computer and send these files to the central machine. On the central machine I need a similar program to listen for incoming files and put them into a directory for subsequent processing. The listner on the central machine will need to process files arriving simultaneously from several machine. There is no issue with file name conflicts as the names are unique. Can anyone give me any pointers? I think I should use boost asio but I don't know where to start with it. The tutorial and examples, while good haven't provided me with an insight yet! The main requirement I have is that it should be cross-platform. I looked at cURL/cURLpp but there are immense difficulties building this in a windows environment. I'm using <boost/program_options.hpp> to allow options in my program to be configured using 3 flavors: - Command line values - Config-file values ( parse_config_file). - Default values ( value<double>(&myDouble)->default_value(3.3) ) prioritized in the given order and put all together in the same variables_map. Upon finalization I'd like to generate a config-file (as required by the 2nd flavor) with the actual values used in the run. So far I've come with a solution that involves iterating over the map, and performing the outstreaming by myself. Something in the line of for(variables_map::const_iterator i = vm.begin(); i != vm.end();++i) { std::cout << i->first << " " << i->second.as<std::string>() << std::endl; } What is cumbersome of this approach is that, actually, not all my args are "std::string", so in reality the call to as<>() ends with bad_any_cast in some cases: it seems that there's no operator << defined for i->second or its underlying "boost::any". So I'd have to switch-case over all the types I'm using for the values. Second, I have to format the output in accordance to parse_config_file by myself. Is there any better solution to this? [BGL] - filtered_graph EdgePredicate performance

filtered_graph documentation says: [1] The reason for requiring Default Constructible in the EdgePredicate and VertexPredicate types is that these predicates are stored by-value (for performance reasons) in the filter iterator adaptor, and iterators are required to be Default Constructible by the C++ Standard. http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_37_0/libs/graph/doc/filtered_graph.html I only noticed this after scouring the documentation for hints as to why dijkstra_shortest_paths was taking 2 hours with a filtered_graph compared to 2 seconds with my adjacency_list. The reason for this huge difference was my filter's EdgePredicate had a boost::unordered_set member that returned true if the edge was in it. Changing that member to a pointer to an unordered_set reduced running time back down to the 2 second range. As I now understand it, every time a filtered graph iterator adaptor is incremented, it actually incrememts in a loop while the EdgePredicate returns false (or end is reached). This implies that the EdgePredicate should be extremely lightweight, since it is stored by-value in the iterator. What is the general recommendation when writing filter_graph predicates? My use case is filtering out all edges that reside inside a polygonal region. To do this, I do the intersection, then store the edges that are inside that region in an unordered_set. This requires that my EdgePredicate store a pointer to the graph and a pointer to the unordered_set since I can't hash an edge_descriptor without a reference to the graph (to get the target and source). That still seems big to me, given that it will be copied per iterator increment. On top of that, to ensure proper release of the unordered_set, I need to use shared_ptr or something similar, instead of just having the predicate own the unordered_set like it logically should, introducing yet more overhead in reference counting. The footnote states that it is stored by value for performance reasons. What types of predicate implementations were in mind when that was decided? I can't see a realistic filtering predicate that could say true/false with no member variables - at the very least it must store a pointer to the graph so that it can use the edge_descriptor. Is there a different, preferred way of writing EdgePredicates? Is there a way to get target/source from an edge_descriptor without the graph instance? Thanks, --Michael Fawcett

[Units] Can't assign equation

I'm using Boost.Units in a program for school to make certain that my equations are consistent (and that I didn't screw them up entering them). In the next Velocity equation, first get assigned with no problems, second causes a compiler error that I believe is saying that the constructor for quantity<velocity> is explicit. Why does first work without a conversion and second doesn't? Also, how do I get second to work? Problem serializing a std::vector of a user-defined class containing a std::string

Dear all, I'm having problems to serialize a std::vector of a small class I use in my code. The class contains 3 members: a std::string, a size_t, and an another class passed as a template parameter (see the code below.) The class passed as a template is basically a std::map<int, blitz::Array<double, 2> >(see this post http://lists.boost.org/boost-users/2008/05/36282.php) I'm using the serialization library with the last class elsewhere in my code and works with no problems, so I guess the error must be in the code below. My program compiles and finishes OK, but the results I'm getting are slightly different from what I should get: it seems that somewhere in the serialization process the numbers stored in the third class get corrupted. I'm using boost 1.35, I need the binary file (I'm taking advantage of the serialization stuff for arrays contiguous in memory), and everything happens in the same machine in a single run of my code (so it is not a problem of different binary archives for different machines.) up gradation problem on boost 1.37

Hi All, I tried to upgrade boost 1.34 to 1.37 in ubuntu 7.10 through package manager. At the end of installation it shown an error like Internal Error, Could not perform immediate configuration (2) on libc6 I already removed 1.34 version from /usr/lib and /var/cache/apt/archives. Why not use Boost.Bind? It will bind to data members, returning a functor that accesses that member. E.g. boost::bind(&A::a, _1); will create a functor that takes an instance of A and returns a reference to the a member. You can then pass that to whatever other functor is being used. Something like (not tested!) std::accumulate(m.begin(), m.end(), bind(std::add, _1, bind(&std::map<std::string, int>::value_type::first, _1)); Boost.Lambda can do this as well, but I am not familiar enough with it to provide an example. Hello, I have a base class with a number of derived classes. Derived classes might have large number of private member variables, each with a different type. Some of these derived classes may have identical lists of member names and types. I seem to have 2 possibilities to generate the list of member variables: class Derived1 { ... typedef mpl::vector< Type1, Type2, Type3, Type4, Type5, Type6 > memberTypes; // then try to generate automatically from memberTypes, as: // const Type1& mType1; // const Type2& mType2;... // const Type6& mType6; // with some meta function }; or // use only PP class Derived1 { ... #define MYNAMESPACE_MEMBER_TYPES (Type1)(Type2)(Type3)(Type4)(Type5)(Type6) // use PP macros to generate the members }; Is it possible to generate the members from the mpl::vector<> ? in particular, willing to use the mpl::size meta function will forbid me from using PP... The advantage I think is a cleaner definition of types, and other derived classes may use the same type memberTypes. If we want to create Holder with some type without copying, just created by default constructor, we can use "traits" technics: template<typename T_> class Trait{ typedef T_ type; } template<typename T_> Holder(const Trait<T_>):v_(new Impl<T_>){}; and when we want to create Holder with some type inside we use: Holder v( Trait<SomeType>() ); And now problem: is there any way to create boost::variant with a type inside without calling copy constructor? Currently I see only one way: boost::variant< std::string, std::pair<std::string, std::string> > p; p=std::string(); in this code we create "empty" variant variable "p", then copy empty string inside it. All of our code is compiled with _SECURE_SCL=0 & _HAS_ITERATOR_DEBUGGING=0. And I rebuild boost with the same flags. Our code links with boost as static libraries. However, at runtime - I'm seeing access violations occuring in the Microsoft secure STL code that should have been disabled with _HAS_ITERATOR_DEBUGGING=0. We are upgrading our legacy code to use boost 1.37 from version 1.34 and have hit a slight hitch. The following (massively simplified) code no longer compiles. I tried it on more than one compiler and the error messages aren't too useful in helping to determine the issue. (The target compiler will be VS 2k8). Any assistance would be appreciated. For what it's worth, I have had a similar problem with the "7z" or 7-zip program. I had to re-install this program this morning, as it was "acting" up. I don't know what you're using for zips -- WinZip, 7-zip, j-zip, or some other program, but the problem *could* be with that software; then again, it might not. ADMG Joseph

problems installing boost -- explorer.exe Application error

I have been trying to install the latest version of Boost from sourceforge.net. I have a Windows Vista operating system. I downloaded the boost.zip file and the boost-jam.zip file. I was able to extract the boost-jam file without problems. However, whenever I try and extract the boost.zip file to a folder I created I get the message: explorer.exe - Application Error The exception unknown software exception (0xc000000d) occurred in the application at 0x75afc02c. I tried ending the process explorer.exe, but when I kill that process, I am unable to do the extracting. I know this is a basic problem. I doubt that the issue is specifically Boost-related but since the problem arose in a boost-context, I'm hopefully on topic. Many thanks for your help. Paul Epstein

I recently asked a question on here about traversal of multiple indices, which produced a luke-warm reaction, mainly because I wasn't really asking the right question! So here's another try. Consider a bit of code like this for ( unsigned i=0; i!=3; ++i ) for ( unsigned j=2; j!=5;++j ) for ( unsigned k=4;k!=10;++k ) f( i, j, k ); I'd guess this comes up pretty often, and by generalising it to * an arbitrary number of ranges, of arbitrary types * f() implemented as a lambda or bind function would have quite wide applicability. I've considered writing an implemetation, which has dragged me into examining fusion and mpl in some detail, but doing so does not seem to me be trivial at all. What's wrong with this code? [program_options] Can you use position-sensitive parameters?

Hi all, I can't find anything in the docs that tells me whether this is possible without writing custom parsers etc. so if anyone knows whether this can be done please let me know. I'd like to be able to use position-sensitive parameters. For example, a program to work with .zip files: zip --rename=one.bin:alpha.bin --add=one.bin --rename=one.bin:beta.bin Using this example, the initial --rename would need to be acted upon first, before -add (otherwise one.bin would get overwritten) and likewise the last --rename must be acted upon after -add, otherwise the wrong file (or no file) would be renamed. If I use normal string vectors the order of the parameters will be lost so this won't work. Is this sort of parsing possible with program_options? Thanks, Adam.

I'm trying to write a class lazy<T>, the skeleton of which is as follows: template<class T> class lazy { public: template<class F> lazy(F fetcher) //Store fetcher somehow { } T get() { if (!cache) cache = fetch(); //Access fetcher from constructor in a type-safe way return cache.get(); } private: optional<T> cache; }; My problem is how to store / access the fetch function in a type safe way. The reason I titled this message how I did is because I see that shared_ptr does almost exactly the same thing with its deleter. But I'm still kind of new to the whole metaprogramming thing and having a little difficulty really getting my head around how it works. I guess there is some general "pattern" that applies in both of these cases as well as any other case where you want to store some value, the type of which is deduced by the constructor, and then later accessing that value in a type safe way. This message could probably have been equally well fitting in a general C++ forum, but since this is a problem that seems to arise really frequently in boost and other code using heavy templates, I guess I'm in pretty good company here as well. The following seems close to a solution: template<class T> class lazy_impl_base { virtual T fetch() = 0; }; template<class T, class F> class lazy_impl : public lazy_impl_base<T> { // etc }; and then storing a lazy_impl_base<T>* in lazy<T>. But there are strange compiler warnings, and I fear I will encounter subtle errors when I attempt to use it with functors, binders, and other non trivial "functions". Can anyone offer some guidance here? Maybe a quick high level overview of how shared_ptr and other boost libraries solve this problem, or even an implementation of lazy that works :P

I have a question about the following code: typedef void(intArrayParamFunc)(int[]); typedef void(intPtrParamFunc)(int*); BOOST_STATIC_ASSERT((boost::is_same<intArrayParamFunc,intPtrParamFunc>::value)); BOOST_STATIC_ASSERT((boost::is_same<int*,int[]>::value)); cout << typeid(intArrayParamFunc).name() << endl; cout << typeid(intPtrParamFunc).name() << endl; cout << typeid(int*).name() << endl; cout << typeid(int[]).name() << endl; The first assert compiles but the second fails, which means that boost::is_same<> thinks that int* and int[] are different, but void(int[]) and void(int*) are the same. Why is this? The typeids print out the following: void __cdecl(int * const) void __cdecl(int *) int * int [0] I'm using Visual Studio 2008. I notice that typeid tells me that intArrayParamFunc is void(int* const). So why does boost::is_same<> compare them equal? Surely void(int* const) should not be the same type as void(int*). Unless this is just some obscure language subtlety I'm not aware of. So is this a bug in boost::is_same<>, a bug in my compiler, or no bugs at all and everything is working perfectly?

Hi, I'm having a problem compiling greg_month.cpp with Intel C++ 11.0. I used bcp to create a local version of boost 1.37.0. When I run icc -I. -c libs/date_time/src/gregorian/greg_month.cpp I get: (0) internal error: backend signals (and nothing more). Is this a known problem? It works fine with other compilers, and the rest of boost compiles fine for me with ICC as well. thanks, Remko

Serialization on Mac Followup

I have gotten everything working correctly now. The first time when I installed boost, I downloaded the source, did the regular configure, make, install into /usr/local. I then tried using MacPorts to install Boost 1.37 and this time, using the MacPorts installation, everything is working fine!

Boost::Serialize on OS X 10.5.6 with g++ 4.3.1 -- Fails to initialize

Hello all, I have an application that works fine in Linux that I'm trying to port to OS X. Since it mostly relies on Boost, I was hoping this would be easy, but Boost::Serialization is causing me grief. I have tried this with both binary_oarchive and text_oarchive to the same results (I am using Boost 1.37). Everything compiles fine, but I get an "Abort trap" program crash at this line: ofstream ofs("output"); boost::archive::text_oarchive oa(ofs); // <--- HERE I know it's that line since I put a cout << "Above" << endl; above it and a cout << "Below" << endl; below it and the only thing that gets printed in "Above". I'm using g++ 4.3.1 from MacPorts and I compiled Boost 1.37 with that compiler. Like I said, everything compiles fine, but the program crashes at this point. It works fine in Linux. Any ideas? [Random] Bernoulli generalization.

Hi!! I was working with boost::bernoulli_distribution, and needed a generalization which instead of receiving a single probability (and return true/false) would receive N probabilities (adding less than 1) and would return a whole number in the interval [0 N]. It seems that's usually called "categorial distribution" and that could be easily implemented, generalizing boost::bernoulli_distribution. For now, it seems that the workaround, so to say, is to use a uniform [0 1] (boost::uniform_01) and then externally to the distro compare its results with the N probabilities. [pool] swap function

Hi, I'm using boost::pool for unordered malloc/free and find myself wanting two additional features: * A nothrow swap function (c.f. scoped_ptr) to swap two pools with equal chunk size. This is a bit of a show-stopper for me at the moment, as I don't want to add the extra level of indirection from allocating the pool object itself on the heap. Has anyone already implemented this for boost::pool, or know if it is on the roadmap for a future release? * A function to reset the pool, but without actually deallocating the memory blocks. This would be the same functionality as purge_memory, but without deallocation. Perhaps "purge_chunks" is a reasonable name for this feature? This isn't a show-stopper, but I want to reset everything and allocate a similar numbe of objects, and having good cache coherency for the allocations would be a benefit. Again, before I delve into the internals, has anyone already had a go at this? Many thanks, Simon

Accumulators: Adding features at runtime

Hello, Accumulator features can be marked as droppable so that at runtime, one could drop some calculations from being performed. Is there some way to add features at runtime. I need to do something like this in a generic method. The caller will provide me the calculations they would want to perform in a bitwise ORed format. Based on that, I need to create an accumulator_set object in my constructor. The accumulator_set object will be a member of my class. A crude way I can think of is to add all features that I intend to support and drop them based on user input. Is there a better way of doing it, is this not an optimal way to do it? Correctlt installing libboost*

Hi there. I am attempting to get the facebook thrift/scribe framework installed on an ubuntu 8.10 server which requires boost and libboost. I thought I'd installed boost correctly, simply by downloading the most recent tarball and doing a ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/boost and then a make install (which took about 30 minutes). However, when attempting to configure scribe with the following params, ./configure --with-boost=/usr/local/boost -with-boost-system=boost_system-gcc42-mt-1_37 -with-boost-filesystem=boost_filesystem-gcc42-mt-1_37 I ended up with an error like this as the last line of the configure output: configure: error: Could not link against boost_system-boost_system-gcc42-mt1_37 ! I am wondering if this is a known problem with this version of boost, or if anyone who listens to this list might have some advice for me. Thanks!

I got the test to work but in my own code I am getting an "unregistered void cast" exception when trying to serialize the derived type. I moved the relevant classes into a separate test and made sure everything was identical to the test I made that does work (e.g. macro placement, include order) and I still get the exception. If I move the derived class definition into the header file it works. The function definitions don't even have to be inlined, they just need to be in the header. This is very weird. I am not sure you can help but if you have any ideas I would appreciate it. Thanks, Daniel Roberts I just separated things out and things seemed to work fine. Can someone give me a high level explanation of the idea behind how concepts work? I'm trying to write a new concept class which enforces that two types are the same and it's not quite clicking. Strangely gcc has this concept built in, so I was surprised that boost didn't. I noticed a boost::is_same<> template, but it's not a concept, so it's not usable inside a BOOST_CONCEPT_ASSERT() macro.

ASIO COM Port & Pins

Hi, I have to read from an (virtual) comport to receive the event from a photosensor. There is no protocol, just if something passes through, there is at pin x power (pins 4,6 and 7,8). I've seen the example for the COM Port usage with asio, sofar I've not seen anything to monitor a single/multiple pins. http://www.nabble.com/Simple-serial-port-demonstration-with-boost-asio-asyn… Also I am not sure, if I need to, would it be enough, to just connect and then perform an async_read on the comport? Actually I don't have to get the data really, as its probably not really "data", all I need to know is when data comes in. Is asio the right library to handle this? ASIO, UDP and multiple Ethernet interfaces

I have a machine with two Ethernet interfaces. I want to create a UDP socket for each interface, so that I can send datagrams out separately over each interface. Thanks, I had both macros in the header file. I moved the BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT macro to the cpp file and that seems to have fixed it. Now I just need to get things working in my own code. I have a derived class that exports its type and overrides get_key for serialization through a base class pointer. If I move the definition of the overridden get_key function out of the header into a cpp file, an assertion fails on line 49 of extended_type_info.cpp. If I define any other functions in the cpp file, I get a linker error saying that the get_key symbol is already defined. It looks to me that any serializable derived class must be completely defined in the header file. Is this correct? If so, why does such a limitation exist? Thank you

[Graph] - Do bundled properties break the named parameters paradigm?

I was trying to work with astar-cities.cpp example and convert to using bundled property maps for the edge properties. This caused numerous issues (see yesterdays post for one example). I found that if I bypass the named parameters and make an explicit call to astar_search( ) then it works OK. Does anyone know if the bundle property maps causes general issues with named parameters? thanks, David --- More info ----------------------------------- Normally, the named parameters would created the property maps that are needed; e.g. thru the use of choose_param(cost, make_iterator_property_map (cost_map.begin(), index_map, cost_map[0])), This appears to break if I use a bundled parameter because of some issues with the limit templates among other things. Boost:multi-index Question on usage of project & modify_key

I am using projection technique & modify_key in one of my member functions: Assuming I have the following data in the container: ObjId ObjIp ObjIndex pMyObj ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ID1 10.10.1.2 1 0x10239032 ID2 10.10.1.3 2 0x23423423 ID3 10.10.1.4 3 0x23132423 The member function 'UpdateKeyObjId' accepts the value on column 3 as key & changes the corresponding value for the field in Column 1. My code seems to work fine for all rows except the last row. When I use modify key on the last record, the app crashes at the highlighted line. I am not sure if my usage of project & modify_key right, could someone please point out if there are any errors in the usage? I am trying to serialize a std::vector< boost::shared_ptr<SomeType> > but I am getting a boost STATIC_WARNING in get_derived_extended_type_info, when compiling the cpp file of the class that owns the vector. The warning, to me, suggests that the compiler thinks that SomeType is polymorphic. Is the compiler really referring to SomeOtherType? Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks

[General] Warnings and pragmas in MSVC

I've written some code using the Lambda & Lambda.bind libraries, although I don't think that really matters, which produce a page ful of C4503 warnings, *4503 'identifier' : decorated name length exceeded, name was truncated* In my code I've tried using pragma disable around the lines which I altered to cause the warnings, but it makes no difference. Is it necessary to apply these pragmas within the Boost library code, or is there a better way? Thanks, Rob.
