[Serialization] Error in serialization of a hash map

Hi, I'm having a bit of trouble while using the serialization library. (Boost v1.35, gcc, Red Hat Linux). I have a class containing a hash_map (key=string, value=shared_ptr to a class containing a deque): HashMapClass{ friend class boost::serialization::access; template <class Archive> void serialize(Archive &ar, const unsigned in t version){ ar & map; } __gun_cxx::hash_map<std::string const, boost::shared_ptr<DequeClass> map; } //create instance HashMapClass hashMap; // fill hashmap ... //perform serialization every hour or something std::ofstream ofs("file.txt"); boost::archive::binary_oarchive oa(ofs); const HashMapClass &map = hashMap; oa << map; The Problem: This works fine for several saves. I can see the file created changing each time the serialization is done. Then after about four or five saves, it seg faults at the place described below. It looks to me like it's having problems iterating over the hash_map. Since submitting my inquiry to the list, I cut my boost.exception code out into a separate test program that is very similar to the test code you gave in your reply (thanks for that) , but my test program does not leak, so the problem seems to involve some aspect of context from the original surrounding code that I'm not yet able to identify. I'll write back with an update if I can isolate the interaction that triggers the leakage. - Bruce

[Range] Single Pass Range functionality

In the Boost Range documentation describing the Range concepts for a single pass range it lists in the expression semantics post-condition for boost::begin(a): "boost::begin(a) is either dereferenceable or past-the-end. It is past-the-end if and only if boost::distance(a) == 0." However the documentation for single pass range does not list boost::distance as a valid expression nor in the reference section is boost::distance listed as a single pass range function. Is boost::distance a valid function when applied to a single pass range ?

asio: take back ownership of native descriptor

Dear all, We have been enjoying using asio alot to build cross-platform networking applications. Just recently, however, we have encountered a limitation that seems impossible to work around, and, would only require a small addition in the API to accomodate. We are trying to add one or more native socket descriptors into asio's reactor to be informed when it is possible to write or read from these descriptors. Therefore, we are creating a tcp::socket and assign() to it a native descriptor. This works, but it seems that nothing can prevent asio from closing the connection in ~tcp::socket() (which does not seem logic since asio did not open the connection in the first place). Should there not be a method to 'take' (back) the descriptor from the asio socket, which resets the socket to the same state as its default constructor ? We tried the workaround that was suggested on the mailinglist, which is to dup() the descriptor. This works on Linux. Unfortunately, dup() is not available on Windows platforms, and when trying to workaround this by using Windows' native methods, we hit the same (so far, unsolved?) problem of this post: http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.lib.boost.user/44269 Regards, koen

Hi everybody! I got a bit rusty with C++. Can someone help me to understand how I can create a Boost.Test suite that contains test cases from multiple modules (multiple cpp files)? bjam cross compilation using mingw32 doesn't use mingw32-ar ?

Using boost::barrier

Hi, Having trouble with sleeping N threads while I need to wake them. Since boost contains no sleep/wake functionality I have tried using boost::condition, I have had trouble with this too (it seems to cause locks). Somone mentioned boost::barrier I read about it in the documentation and it appears to function in a way I would require, here is what im looking for: I reach a point in the program where I segment a pieces of data and it needs to be processed in parallel on two threads, the main thread waits for the two worker threads to finish processing then continues on, those two threads (or N threads..) must then go back to sleep until they are needed again. Can anyone provide a good solution, if boost::barrier is what im looking for could you help me describe how Id correctly impliment this? [GIL] wrapper for QImage

Hi, I'm planning to write an image manipulation application using Boost.GIL as a backbone and Qt for the interface. Now I was thinking it might be a good idea to write a wrapper around QImage to give GIL direct access to the pixels of a QImage. I've been looking at the code and as far as I can tell I have 2 options: (1) create a new GIL image type that wraps the QImage (2) create a "qimage_pixel_iterator" and use "... interleaved_view(...)" Now my question(s): - Would (2) be enough, or is it necessary to also create (1)? - "QRgb" (Qt's pixel type) is a typedef for "unsigned int", so specialising eg. "template<class Pixel> struct gil::channel_type" for "unsigned int" seems somewhat suboptimal (is it an 8bit RGBA pixel or a 32bit Gray pixel?). Some sort of proxy class might be appropriate? Maybe a gil::pixel<...> subclass?

Regex win vs. linux

Hi, I'm seeking help for the following problem, using the regex library: the following line of code is meant to assist in parsing urls: boost::regex exp("(?is)(https?)://([^:/?#]+):?(\\d{1,5})?/?([^?#]*)?\ \??([^#]+)?#?(\\w*)"); It runs fine in a linux environment, however if compiled with VC9 on windows, it fails with: First-chance exception at 0x7c812aeb in test.exe: Microsoft C++ exception: boost ::exception_detail ::clone_impl <boost::exception_detail::error_info_injector<boost::regex_error> > at memory location 0x0012f768.. I thought that the expression might be too long, and indeed if I shorten the above line to: boost regex exp("(?is)(https?)://([^:/?#]+):?(\\d{1,5})?/?"); it runs fine on windows as well. Hello, I am writing a wrapper class which gets data over time and has to compute a variety of statistics using boost::accumulators. The accumulator cannot be a variable on the stack (function local variable) as it will go out of scope after the function invocation. I will have to make it a member variable of a class. I will not know the type of calculations to requested at compile time. I therefore need a generic accumulator type as member and add the specific type at runtime. In short, I need a container to hold accumulator_set objects. Different type of accumulator_set objects in the container will perform different calculations. The type of calculation I want to perform will be based on input at runtime. pseudo code: #define MEAN 1 #define MAX 2 class calc { public: setmetric(int metricType) { accumulator_set<double, features<> > *pacc; if (1 == metricType) { pacc = new accumulator_set<double, features <tag::mean> >; } else if(2 == metricType) { pacc = new accumulator_set<double, features <tag::max> >; } m_Vacc.push_back(pacc); } compute(double input) { // I will iterate over the vector, get the accumulator_set objects // acc_obj(input) followed by extract } private: std::vector <accumulator_set<double, features<> > *> m_Vacc; }; If features could be added at runtime, I probably could have solved this problem. Other approach is to have an accumulator_set with all supported features (supported by my application) as dropable. Drop all the unnecessary features based on user input. By adding all supported types, I will get a complete accumulator_set class at compile time and having a container to hold it is straight forward. Any help or advise is really appreciated. executing this code: boost::asio::streambuf b; std::cout << "socket.available()=" << socket.available() << std::endl; size_t received = boost::asio::read_until(socket, b, "\r\n"); std::cout << "received=" << received << std::endl; std::cout << "b.size()=" << b.size() << std::endl; std::istream is(&b); std::getline(is, m_token); results in output of: socket.available()=34 received=26 b.size()=34 In my app I need to read the 8 bytes (after the 26) as binary (and hence don't use the streambuf to do so). Yet read_until has already consumed them from the socket and placed them in the streambuf :( Suggestions?

boost library advice wanted

Hi: I am in the process of implementing a program that turned commands from voice recognition software in to code that are entered in to an application. there are approximately 200 codes available in this particular sofware I am automating. Wile I could use boost::stringAlgo along with the functions available in the stl there must be a better alternative. To give an idea of howthis would work the user might say: conditional new line, and [l] would be placed in the current document onscreen. the user could say skip 5 lines and [sk5] would be entered. >From this it is clar that: 1. some tokens are voiced by the user but are not needed when analysing the input. e.g lines is used for ease of use but not actually used in the analysis. 2. some tokens are only followed by certain othe tokens, e.g new can be followed by line, page or paragraph. tow queries: 1. What is the best boost library to use in this situation, boost.wav, boost.spirit, boost.xpressive or boost.tokenizer. 2. Has anybody else done anything like this, and hence can offer any implementation advice. Any help apreciated. Sean.

I've got boost 1.38 built. When I try to build demo.cpp, it fails. I'm building in the serialization/examples subdirectory. I think this is a supported compiler. Say I have: template<typename in_t> void F (in_t & in) ... main() { F<std::vector<int> > (...) Suppose in_t is a templated container, such as std::vector<int>. Is there a way within the function 'F' to get the generic container type, 'std::vector' when F is instantiated with a specific e.g., std::vector<int>? Maybe I'm missing something obvious :)

Sorry for the repost, but it looks like the formatting on my previous post was messed up, and I wouldn't blame people for not reading it I am on windows using the latest version of the intel compiler (set in my user-config.jam). I was able to do a debug build of everything using: bjam link=static debug stage But when I tried to do a release build, it is popping up a spirit error for serialization(fails with or without mpi). Any ideas on a workaround or if this is a legit bug? [shared_ptr] Is reference counting thread safe in boost 1.38

Hello, I am trying to replace a home grown shared pointer which uses expensive lock (mutex) to make the increment and decrement thread safe. I went through the boost code and see it uses atomic operations. I am not able to figure out if the following case is handled: 1. Thread 1 has a shared_ptr and hence the reference is 1 2. Thread 1 is in the process of decrementing the reference and thread 2 is in the process of incrementing the the reference 3. If thread 1 succeeds in decrementing, the reference will become 0 and hence 'destroy' will get called. 4. Can thread 2 increment after when thread 1 is in a call to destroy? Hi, I'm trying to use Boost regex for the first time and I'm having trouble getting libboost_regex to link. Thread synchronization

Hello I have a situation in which hundreds of threads potentially run side by side. They exchange minimal data and are fully in sync by way of a scoped mutex. Now I have a situation in which a single seperate thread runs alongside all the worker threads. This thread is responsible for keeping data sets used by the workers, current. Given the complexity and total alternation of the data onthis interval, my question is; Does boost threads allow my single thread to halt all other activity ,of all the other threads,from a single thread itself. This is what I need to accomplish and any guidance to this matter is a huge help. John

[Q] storing function pointers to member function

I am trying to come up with a system that would let me have a function (getter) for every member of the class Using macros I can generate a 'get_<membername> function such that struct my { float mem1; } would be struct my { float mem1; static const float& get_mem1( const my& ) { return my.mem1; } }; Now, I would like to store pointer to the get_mem1 function in a staticaly declared std::map Using boost/function.hpp I can declare a type for float typedef boost::function<const float& (const my& ,const char* )> tFget__float ; and then I can store it in, for example std::set<tFget__float> The problem is that if I have another function that returns a different data type (something other than float, for example std::string) I get a compilation error when trying to insert that function pointer into the set. There is a check implemented, I think, via the template system that prevents compiler from making copies of one ponter type to another -- even though they only differ by return type. When I just do the assignment tFget__float x= <function returning float> or to function returning std::string -- I do not get the error. [Test] Compilation inconsistency

Hello, I posted a question regarding the following issue a few months back: Empty cpp file containing only: #include <boost/test/test_case_template.hpp> Fails to compile, however an empty cpp file containing #include <boost/test/unit_test.hpp> #include <boost/test/test_case_template.hpp> Compiles fine. [Proto] Failure on VC9

I've been tryign to port some of my proto code to VC9 but it seems I failed. The code compiles fine but when I try to use any of my newly defined operator on my terminal, VC9 complains it cna't find them. What can be the reason of this symptoms as the same code works on both gcc and icc ?

[It seems that my 'thenBranch' and 'elseBranch' functions are never called and if_then_else_return' always returns true (as if the 'then' branch were called)]. Hi! Sorry, if this has been discussed before. I am too stupid (and tired) to find the equivalent for tuple_io.hpp for the boost tr1::tuple implementation. So is there already some serialization and/or I/O implementation for a tr1::tuple available somewhere? The proposal at http://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg21/docs/papers/2002/n1403.pdf mentions operator<<, but VC9 SP1 refuses to find one if I #include <boost/tr1/tuple.hpp> or <tuple>. Is this another VC9 bug? I could not find the compiler flag which hinders M$'s implementation of TR1 ... Any pointer appreciated. best regards, Markus

I am trying to create an executable which will start a python interpreter, import a module written in python, called entry.py, run its run() method and then quit. I have this part done, although I use only the C API. However, if in C++ I use code like this PyRun_SimpleString("import hello"); PyRun_SimpleString("planet = hello.World()"); PyRun_SimpleString("planet.set('howdy')"); PyRun_SimpleString("print planet.greet()"); It works! What am I doing wrong? I am attaching my (very short) code. Be advised that I am using the funky platform of Windows XP, cygwin and GCC 3.4, boost 1.33.1. That might be the problem, but I have no other platform to try this on easily. What am I missing here? Best, George

Hello! Is there a way to determine access mode for arbitrary file using boost::filesystem? I searched through the documentation and source code, but didn't find such functions in boost::filesystem. I'm looking for simple functions like: bool is_readable(const std::string& path) bool is_writable(const std::string& path) bool is_executable(const std::string& path) I also want to determine OS-dependent access rights flags (such as setuid and setgid in Unix). hi all im not sure if i just dont find the solution in the docs/list or its not supported in boost::filesystem which means using system functions given is a symlink like this '/tmp/subdir/thisisasymlink' which points to '/some/where/some/file/or/directory' what i need is: 1. the absolute path the symlink is pointing too, which is '/some/where/some/file/or/directory' 2. get the absolute path for something like '/tmp/../some/where/some/file/or/directory' which resolvs to '/some/where/some/file/or/directory' 3. if the absolute path is a subdirectory of some other directory in this example: if '/some/where/some/file/or/directory' is a subdirectory of '/tmp/subdir' which obviously isnt thx in advance

compiling 32 bit boost libraries on a 64 bit system? (gcc, Linux)

Hi, I'm trying to compile boost into 32 bit libraries on a 64 bit Linux box. with gcc, with would simply mean to add the flag -m32 to gcc. but I can't seem to make bjam do this. I've tried a number of approaches: - export and set the environment variables CFLAGS, CXXFLAGS and LDFLAGS to -m32 - set the following in tools/build/v2/user-config.jam: cflags=-m32 cxxflags=-m32 linkflags=-m32 - set the following in tools/build/v2/user-config.jam: using gcc : 4.1.2 : g++-4.1.2 : -m32 ; (based on the documentation found at http://beta.boost.org/doc/tools/build/doc/html/bbv2/reference/tools.html#bb… ) but to no avail - the -m32 flag is not honored, and the compiled boost libraries are 64 bit :( what am I doing wrong? A need for a complex pool type container

My requirements are a bit complex and involved, but I'll try to be as brief as possible. We have this "scheduler" type system where for each unit of time (think of 1 unit as 1 ms) there is a "bucket" of events that shall be processed. This is relative. Suppose the current time is 103. We will have a record of events to be processed at time 103, 104, 105, ..., 203. When all of the events in the "bucket" for time stamp 103 are processed, we "pop_front" to remove the bucket for 103. Everything is essentially shifted forward. Hopefully this does not require physically shifting everything forward, and simply is just a matter of using a lesser index to access the same element later on. I insert new events into existing buckets anywhere in the container, it does not necessarily have to be from the back. I always remove items from the front since they are processed linearly. One can kind of think of this as a std::deque< std::vector<> >, but the containing deque would need to be given a fixed size of 100 (as in the example above). The tricky part is shifting all of the "buckets" (the buckets in this case would be the inner-vector objects) forward when something from the front is removed. The key here is that I do not want to call pop_front() each time a bucket is processed because I want to avoid constant new/delete operations since insertion and removal will be happening quite frequently. I'm not sure what the best approach to solving this problem is. I'm hoping someone in the community will be able to suggest a way in which boost can easily solve this problem. Hello, I've been trying out boost::serialization and ran into a problem trying to serialize objects of derived classes. I set up this simple class hierarchy: class BaseNode { std::vector<BaseNode*> children_; ... friend class boost::serialization::access; template<class Archive> void serialize(Archive &ar, unsigned version) { ar & children_; } }; class DerivedNode : public BaseNode { ... friend class boost::serialization::access; template<class Archive> void serialize(Archive &ar, unsigned version) { ar & boost::serialization::base_object<BaseNode>(*this); } }; All works fine as long as I register the types with the archives: arch.register_type(static_cast<BaseNode*>(NULL)); arch.register_type(static_cast<DerivedNode*>(NULL)); Now the documentation suggests exporting the classes as an alternative to that. But when I instead put BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT(BaseNode) BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT(DerivedNode) the polymorphism is not handled correctly and e.g. a tree of 3 DerivedNodes is restored as a single BaseNode object. [serialization] export.hpp changes from 1.37 to 1.38

The BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT.. macros have been moved into a detail namespace (1.38) from a (public) anonymous namespace (1.37). I'm guessing that the reasoning for this was in order to avoid many definitions of the class singletons. However, this appears to have enforced that all of the guids (for all archive types) now have to reside in a single compilation unit. The attached code illustrates the limitation; this compiles under 1.37 but results in duplicate symbol definitions in 1.38 (with MSVC7.1). It worked with 1.37 because the anonymous namespace ensured no symbol clashes, but now the symbols are all in the same namespace. The example shows a case where two archive types (xml and binary) might be in use. The obvious solution to this (simple) case would be to just use a single compilation unit, which brings in the guids for both binary and xml. However, turning a blind eye to the 'untidiness', this fix does not help with the project we're working on. In our project, there is not just a simple type being serialized; there are a lot more classes and a bit of mpl thrown in. This actually resulted in breaching the COFF symbol limit (approx. 65k) with MSVC7.1, so we were forced to split the serialization. In fact, we had to split both the save and load parts of the binary serialization. Our current workaround is to use the archive.register_type<...> method, and ignore the export macros, but this does mean ensuring all types are covered (as described in the documentation).

[asio] io_service use in dll leads to service_registry crash

Configuration: 1) Boost 1.37 2) Visual Studio 2008 3) Windows executable using boost's multi-threaded static library, using a static linked multi-threaded run time. 4) A dll I have as part of the project is compiled with the same settings. 5) MFC is not used. The executable creates an io_service (io) and pool of worker threads, each calling io.run(). Afterwards, the executable begins loading DLLs I've written to add specific functionality (i.e plugins). Each of these plugins are passed the executable's io_service so that they can perform asynchronous work against the thread pool. One of the DLLs creates a boost::asio::ip::tcp::acceptor object, passing the io_service to its constructor. This, in turn, eventually calls use_service, which creates a new service and associates it with the service_registry. This is all happening in the DLL. At shut down, I begin unloading the DLLs, giving each a chance to shut down everything (which they do). I then call FreeLibrary() on the DLL's HMODULE handle. After my application completes shutdown, all the destructors hit, as expected. When the destructor of the service_registry hits, I believe its linked list of services is still pointing to a service located in the memory space of the DLL. This results in a crash. I believe this is the case as I can track the pointer to the acceptor_service in a Watch Window. The pointers and the object remain valid until I call "FreeLibrary", at which point they become worthless. I think this is because the DLL and the executable have their own CRT memory space, due to the way I'm linking in the CRT. The service for the acceptor is being created in the DLL's space. When FreeLibrary is called, this space is released to the OS, making the pointer to the object worthless. If that's the case, I believe I'll need to supply my own service creation routine for the DLLs so that the services are created in my executable's memory space. Is this possible? Is there a way to get the service_registry to release a service when it's no longer in use anywhere, or to specify my own new/delete routines the use_service calls should use? Or, is using ASIO in a DLL like this a really really bad idea? If that's the case, how can I tell what other objects in boost could cause these sorts of problems? I'll try to get a project together that reproduces the issue as soon as I can. I can't use the code I have at the moment as it is proprietary. Hi, I'm using boost 1.35 on a Linux machine. I've written an application which creates a boost::asio::ip::udp::socket, then binds to a certain local address & port - and finally I've created an option to join a boost::asio::ip::multicast::join_group. All seems well, and I see the registration request through a network sniffer. BUT, when I try to receive packets after successfully joining the udp multicast group - I get NOTHING! Needless to say, I see tons of packets streaming through with the sniffer. What am I doing WRONG? Do the Range Adaptors really depend upon the RegEx static lib?

Hello, I'm using the range adaptors from the latest version of the range library in the vault. Namely: boost::adaptors::filtered boost::adaptors::transformed The Visual Studio linker was kind enough to inform me that these depend upon the regex static library (libboost_regex-vc80-mt-sgd-1_38.lib). Does anybody know why? I'd rather not build the boost regex lib. Is there any way to avoid this dependency?

Hi, I'm using the boost 1.36 program options library on windows with msvc++2008, statically linked to my applications. In "debug mode" everything works fine, however, in "release mode" I encounter an access violation when parsing the c++ commandline passed to main() or when parsing the windows commandline with split_winmain(). Note that this happens only if and only if the preprocessor macro _SECURE_SCL gets turned off (_SECURE_SCL=0). scenario 1) Parsing the main() options, even the simple example from the tutorial, section "getting started", terminates with an access violation when calling po::store() without a usable stack trace; scenario 2) A simple call to po::split_winmain(L"\"--test\"") produces a crash. Note the use of a wide character string. [bccl] Compilation fails due to BOOST_CONCEPT_ASSERT

In my project I have two header files both introducing four BOOST_CONCEPT_ASSERT macros at namespace level. It happened that both those files used those macros at the same lines (same line numbers). The compilation of the one which is included as second fails (on MSVC 2008) with error: d:\studies\thesis\project\prover\formulas\terms\variable.h(83) : error C2365: 'boost_concept_check83' : redefinition; previous definition was 'enumerator' d:\studies\thesis\project\prover\formulas\terms\constant.h (83) : see declaration of 'boost_concept_check83' (repeated for each o those four uses with indexes 84, 85, 86 - clearly line numbers). It seems the line number is used to build some inner use name. Reasonable. But failable as well. Maybe file name macro could be used here however this could give string inappropriate for the identifier. I don't know how to solve this (a temporal workaround is obviously easy - just move the macros in on of files to a different place). I haven't found any info on that neither in the documentation nor in the groups. Adam Badura

There are substantial changes internally, but from user perspective the changes are not so large. Problem compiling a statemachine with "class" instead of "struct"

Hi folks, we have run into an interesting problem when compiling one of our state machines using the boost state chart templates. As soon as we change the declaration to class Active : public boost::statechart::simple_state< Active, PRX5StateMachine > we get massive compiler errors, which look like this: /usr/include/boost/statechart/simple_state.hpp:832: error: within this context /usr/include/boost/statechart/state_machine.hpp:243: error: ‘typedef struct boost::statechart::detail::rtti_policy boost::statechart::state_machine<PRX5StateMachine, Active, std::allocator<void>, boost::statechart::null_exception_translator>::rtti_policy_type’ is inaccessible Is it mandatory to inherit from simple_state via a struct and not from a class? [Interprocess] shared_ptr in shared memory and inheritance

Hello, we would like to store collections of differents objects derived from a same base class in a shared memory segment, and use polymorphism to manipulate them using shared_ptr<base>. But as we can't have virtual functions in shared memory we are exploring this solution : We designed 2 parallels hierarchies of classes - A hierarchy of empty objects in process memory with virtual functions (polymorphism) (ex : class A) - A hierarchy of data objects in shared memory without virtual functions (class A_data) A "process memory" object stores a weak_ptr to the "shared memory" data object. Use of data are encapsuled in accessors which take care of weak_ptr locking and concurrent access. I don't know if this is a good design (any opinions ?) but it seems to work well... until the destruction of "shared memory" objects. The wrong destructor is used (the base one) instead of the destructor of the derived class, probably because the destructor is not virtual... So I'm currently stuck and I'm looking for some advices. Hi folks, I'm trying my luck with the Boost.uBlas library, but I'm running into problems. The compiler says: [BCC32 Error] matrix.hpp(2671): E2247 'identity_matrix<double,std::allocator<double> >::one_' is not accessible The same happens if I use the assignment operator instead of copy construction. Can anyone help me? As you've probably seen from the error message, I'm using the CodeGear (alias Borland) 2007 compiler. I'm using a BoostPro 1.37.0 installation. I would like to be able to have a series of properties in the class, and have these retrieved from different indexes of the array, so for example Comments [array index 1]. [Serialize] Problem creating boost::archive::text_iarchive

Hello, I'm getting problems creating a boost::archive::text_iarchive with boosts version 1.35.0 and Visual C++ Studio 2005 (Version 8). When I do so I get a std::bad_alloc exception. The code is as follows: void Serialize::deserialize(std::ifstream &modelFile, CoreModel &c) { try { boost::archive::text_iarchive ia(modelFile); // This line throws the exception (I've seen it with the debugger) ia >> c; } catch (std::exception& ex) { // I catch the bad_alloc here } } And this code si called this way: ... for (...) { modelFile.open(model_name.c_str(), std::ios::binary); if (modelFile.is_open() == false) { // ... We deal with the error but it does not get into here } CoreModel model; Serialize::deserialize(modelFile, model); .... } With the debugger I have seen that the exception is thrown into the method text_iarchive_impl<Archive>::load. The method basic_text_iprimitive::load is not setting the size of the string and when the string resize is done the value is huge (is garbage actually) and it throws the std::bad_alloc. boost::asio handler based on received data

Greetings, A server that I'm communicating with sends two types of messages identified by an ID. The first message type is sent automatically on specific events. The second type is sent in response to commands. I want to provide an interface that notifies the user when events occur (asynchronously) and at the same time enable performing commands. My first implementation did this (pseudocode): // In initialization socket.async_receive(buffer, event_handler); // In send_command socket.send(command_buffer); socket.receive_async(response_buffer, user_response_handler); event_handler() { user_event_handler(); socket.async_receive(buffer, event_handler); } The problem here is that 'event_handler' might (or will?) receive the response message. An additional problem is that these messages have no specific order. Hi, from the C++0x standard, 7.3.3 (5) I gather that it is not possible to write a using statement to import a templated function into the global namespace. E.g. #include <boost/units/quantity.hpp> using template<typename X, typename Y> boost::units::quantity_cast<X,Y>; will be malformed. The only alternatives I have been able to come up with are 1) Use boost::units::quantity_cast<X>(Y) which is a bit longwinded 2) Write a new quantity_cast in the global namespace, and forward it to the boost::units one. Is there a better way? (Sorry that this is only borderline a boost question) -- kind regards, Esben

Hi there, I'm using CMake as my build system -- not to build boost, but build my own project, which heavily depends on Boost. I habe in the past used the FindBoost.cmake macro to locate the most suitable Boost version. However, there does not seem to be a centrally maintained version of this file (I believe it originated from the KDE project ?), and I was wondering whether "anyone" in Boost was working on a replacement. After all, if CMake is considered as an alternative build system for Boost itself, allowing users to find the installed libraries would be the most logical step. Thanks and Best Regards, Ruediger

[Preprocessor] Questiona bout reentrant call and file iteration performance

I've been playing with Boost PreProcessor for some times now and it really helped. Two corners still looks obscure for me as the doc doesn't provide clear-cut enough use-cases for my taste. 1/ Concerning the _D version of some macro, what's their use case ? I can see the example in the doc but I can't see why useing the normal version of the _D function should fail or behave badly 2/ Concerning file iteration vs BOOST_PP_REPEAT, what's the trade-off of one vs the other ? Is iterating faster at compile time than REPEATing ? Is there features of iteration that can't be done using REPEAT (or the reverse) or is the only bonus of ITERATE the fact that error actually send you in code and not on macro call site ? boost interprocess / shared memory question

Hello, We have a windows application (a process) that requires a large data file (approx. 100 MB) to perform a task. We have a master that launches several instances of this application. We would like to share the large data file across the processes such that, there is just one instance of the data file in physical memory without any disc access. Hence each application will have a small footprint in memory during execution. We have tried using a managed shared memory object from the boost::interprocess library to achieve this. However, this doesn't help us as the memory footprint of the application goes up upon access of the data file. Is there a way to achieve the desired single footprint memory sharing? Does this work as expected with other OSes? Naveen

Hi, I am encountering build errors with SUNWspro. Mainly "array.hpp" causes the errors. [BGL] Properties in a set-based adjacency list

Hello, How can I use an external property map with an adjacency list which uses a setS for the vertex list? I got property maps (with arrays as storage for the property values) working fine with a vecS adjacency list, but I can't seem to get them to work after changing the template to setS. I understand the reason is lack of automatic indexing, but don't know how to get around that. Using set/map for storage of property values would most convenient for me. On a similar note, perhaps it's possible to use a map to store the vertices, mapping ints to Vertex descriptors? (that was the original custom implementation of graph class which I'm porting to BGL). asio::transfer_at_least strange behavior

Hi Is transfer_at_least supposed to return success only if requested number of bytes transferred at once or at all? For example, I want to receive 800 bytes and put them into streambuf using transfer_at_least(800) as completion condition, but I receive 2 chunks of 400 bytes, therefore I never get a success, because transfer_at_least_t always wants more data. I know, there are may be some problems with handler copying, but the name of function is misleading, and may be should be documented. I'm using boost 1.37, may be something has changed in 1.38.

compiling Boost with STLport

Hi, I have a question about compiling Boost 1.38.0 with STLport. According to the document of Boost.Build, we can do following things: (1)modifying user-config.jam to point directories about STLport; (2)adding stdlib=stlport to bjam command; Using this method,We can compile Boost 1.38.0 with STLport supported. There is a 'p' in the libraries' name. But, I had a problem today. I recompiled Boost without STLport and checked there isn't a 'p' in libraries' name. When I compiled my program there is a error: can't link to stlport.5.2.lib At the end, I took off STLport's path from $INCLUDE_PATH (at the first) and compiled Boost again. Then I compiled my program successful. So, I think if we put STLport's path to the first of $INCLUDE_PATH when compiling Boost. It will links STLport too, but there is a 'p' in the libraries' name. Hi Looking through assembly code of simple test produced by gcc with optimization, I've noticed that free functions in utility/value_init.hpp (get and set) are not declared as inline, though its body consist only of prologue and epilogue. Is there any reason for this or just a bug?
