can't debug into BOOST_FOREACH?

Hi there, I just noticed there seems to be no way of debugging into a BOOST_FOREACH loop... Is that true? I use g++ 4.3 / gdb 6.8 here and neither would the debugger stop any any breakpoint inside such loops nor can I step into them from outside. Is this supposed to be like that? puzzled... Stephan

New and updated serialization performance results

Recently I updated this comparsion, http://webEbenezer.net/comparison.html, of Ebenezer Enterprises and the Boost Serialization library. Here's a link to the previous version of that file, http://webEbenezer.net/compprev.html. The previous tests used Boost 1.34.1 and the updated versions use Boost 1.38. I didn't detect any improvement performance- wise in the Boost Serialization library in this round of testing. In addition to the updated results, I've added some new tests that test loading/receiving data. Although Boost Serialization comes closer to Ebenezer times when loading/receiving data than it does when saving/sending data, there still is a gap between the two. That gap is greatest when (multi)set, (multi)map, or rb_tree are used. This is probably because Boost Serialization doesn't use the insert with a hint function available with these containers. I believe that multi_index uses the hinted verison of insert in it's marshalling code, so in my opinion it makes sense to consider this in Boost Serialization also. Additionally, we've added support for flex_string, http://erdani.org/code/main.html, to the site. On that page it says Harmut Kaizer reported that dropping flex_string into the Wave Boost Preprocessor improved it's speed by 5-10%, depending on input. I've done a few performance tests comparing the two strings and also found flex_string to be more efficient than std::string. I met the same issue. And finally I found it was caused by the sequence of object destruction. The asio needs an io_service object to handle all async call. The io_service implementation such as win_iocp_io_service hold a list of its service instance. These instances may be held by object such as tcp::acceptor from their constructor. If io_service was destroyed before the tcp::acceptor then the instance pointer will be released and cause a crash in tcp::acceptor's destructor. The solution is very simple: make sure the io_service was destroyed after all other object that may hold a reference to it. IEC/SI Binary Prefix Formatter

Hello guys, I'm wondering if in the Boost universe we already have something to format numbers according to IEC's "new" prefixes (such as MiB and GiB) or SI prefixes (such as MB and GB). What I'm looking for is something like: formatter << boost::iec_prefix << 5*1024*1024; // Will output "5 GiB" formatter << boost::si_prefix << 5*1024*1024; // Will output "5GB" Do you have anything like this? [asio] SSL enabled http server3 example is blocking

Dear boost-users I changed the http server3 example (many thready run io_service::run()) to use SSL connections. I now face the problem that the async_accept handler is only called when no other connections are alive and not immediately by another thread as with the original non-ssl example. My modified request_handler simply sleeps for 10 seconds. Now when a request arrives while another one is being processed (sleeping), it is only handled after the other one finished. By setting a breakpoint in server::handle_accept() I can see that this handler for the second request is only called after the first connection has been destroyed/closed. This happens on Windows XP. Do you may have an idea why the accept handler is not called immediately or where the blocking could happen? I may help if you could test this on another platform then XP. To test this, apply the attached patch to the directory boost_1_38_0/libs/asio/example/http/server3 and copy the *.pem files from the asio ssl example to the working directory of the server3 example. [serialization] Archive reload

[accumulators] Any was to reset an accumulator_set object?

Hello, I am using boost::accumulator_set to compute mean. After every 100 samples, I need to start afresh. Since I am using accumulator_set as a member variable in a class (I get samples one at a time and need to preserve accumulator_set object across function calls), I need some mechanism to reset it to its initial state. I am not doing anything fancy like using droppable functionality. As a real crude work around, I am keeping 2 objects. The first is not used for any computing and hence its state is same throughout. The computing is done using the second object. After 100 samples, I just copy the first onto the second hoping the state of second object will be same as first which is the initial state. [Interprocess] Trying to include unistd.h on Windows?

We are using the Interprocess library to make use of shared memory within our code. We are experiencing the following problem when building on Windows. Some of our projects are trying to include unistd.h from workaround.hpp. It looks like this happens if BOOST_WINDOWS is not defined. Tracing back through the header files I pieced together that BOOST_WINDOWS is not defined if BOOST_DISABLE_WIN32 is defined (win32.hpp). And BOOST_DISABLE_WIN32 gets defined if _MSC_EXTENSIONS is not defined (visualc.hpp). >From the MSDN documentation, _MSC_EXTENSIONS is not defined if the Visual C++ Language Extensions are turned off, which in fact they are for these projects. Has anyone else seen this and is there a workaround for getting Boost Interprocess to work on Windows in cases where the Visual C++ Language Extensions are turned off? Error while compiling boost thread

Hi All, I am using boost thread for my project. I have used BCP tool to extract only those binaries that is related to boost thread(and the dependencies also).... Now I am trying to compile my code using only that thread binaries.. previously i tried using that binaries by writing a small code.... and it worked properly. I have done the necessary setings changes in VS2008. Pool ordered_malloc and O(n)

Hi, the boost pool documentation states ordererd_malloc(n) and boost::free(chunk, n) both take O(n). I tested it with a workload of a lot of n=1 and n=2 small allocations. Basically if I just use boost::malloc(2*base_size) even if i just need boost::malloc(base_size) the runtime is 1 min. With ordered_malloc(_)/boost::free(_,_) the runtime explodes (>> 30 minutes) (I terminated the program). Profiling it, one can see, that ordered_malloc dominates the runtime (83 % after a few minutes). Is this a known issue? Is the runtime of ordered_malloc in O(n), i.e. in O(c\cdot n), but the constant factor c is very huge? Best regards Georg Sauthoff

Fastest way of serializing a huge vector of ints into a human readable string

Hi, I have a program which produces a vector of integers (several million entries). I need to write that into a human-readable string of space separated numbers. I wonder, what would be the fastest way? My first attempt was stringstream resultStream; copy(integers.begin(), integers.end(), ostream_iterator<int>(resultStream, " ")); string result = resultStream.str(); But that requires copying the string. Thus I was wondering if I could use boost to write to the target string directly? boost::iostreams allow me to do the following: string result; boost::iostreams::filtering_ostream out(boost::iostreams::back_inserter(result)); copy(integers.begin(), integers.end(), ostream_iterator<uint64>(out, " ")); This is faster by almost a factor of 2. Hi I'm going to use Boost.Pool with UserAllocator mapped directly to Windows API calls ::VirtualAlloc and ::VirtualFree. So it makes no sense to allocate less than SYSTEM_INFO::dwAllocationGranularity, which currently equals to 65536. To my surprise, I have not found anything like this in documentation. But I've seen in source code this: // pre: npartition_size != 0 && nnext_size != 0 explicit pool(const size_type nrequested_size, const size_type nnext_size = 32) So is "nnext_size" what I was looking for ? And what does mean "an extension", is there an official proposal of Pool for future standard ?

Building boost 1.38 on mac os X

Hi, I'm having problems (again) building boost on mac OS X 64-bit. Once again specifying architecture=x86 address-model=64 to bjam gives me a message that my cpu does not support the x86-64 instruction set. I was getting the same message with boost 1.34, and it was fine for boost 1.36. I tried getting around the problem by adding cxxflags=-m64 to the bjam execution, but then I get the message at the bottom. Invoking bjam with no option will build everything fine, but it looks like it is a 32-bit build. I'm a total newbie with the Thread library, so please forgive me if this is a dumb question. Say I make a class called Shared that looks something like this: class Shared { private: boost::mutex monitor; int qty; public: Shared() : qty(0) { } void lock() { monitor.lock(); } void unlock() { monitor.unlock(); } int getQty() { return qty; } void setQty(int q) { qty = q; } }; If I use it in from multiple threads with code that looks like: // s is an instance of Shared s.lock(); int q = s.getQty(); ++q; s.setQty(q); s.unlock(); will it work reliably on a multi-core machine? When the mutex unlock() happens, does that flush the CPU cache and write the value of s.qty to main memory? Does the mutex lock() operation clear the CPU cache and force a reload of s from the main memory? I'm trying to understand how synchronization works among multiple cpus. I've only worked on multithreaded code in Java and there the memory model is well defined. AFAIK, that isn't the case in C++. Cory

Hello all,I've a class with boost::variant as its member ; class A { public: A() { } boost::variant<int, string, double, date>& getValue (const string& key) { ... } private: map<string, boost::variant<int, string, double, date> >m_member ; } I've list of A's like this list<A> myList. when trying to find a particular element with integer value (1 say) which is stored in m_member, I'm doing this.. find_if (myList.begin(), myList.end(), (boost::lambda::bind(&A::getValue, boost::lambda::_1, "SomeKey") == 1)); This is giving lot of errors. I've tried casting the result of bind to Variant, and then converting the variant to int using boost::get<int>().. but no help. Any ideas how to do this ? Surya

Hi all, I am a newbie when it comes to using boost. My primary motivation behind using boost is that I want to use the Text processing, Numerical computing facilities together in one common language. Boost Regex, Spriti and The BLas Libraries would serve my purpose. However, I am having a tough time installing and running it. I am not able to find any good documentation for using this. My requirement is this: 1. I want to be able to install Boost locally in my Unix account. I don't have root privileges. 2. There is a wrapper called Boost Numerics Package written and hosted at http://mathema.tician.de/software/boost-bindings. I want to be able to use this also. This allows me to use ATLAS, BLAS in Boost. I would also like to know, how tough is it to interface C++ code with Python using Boost.Python. I am not an expert in Python. shared_ptr memory leak

Dear all, we managed to create a shared_ptr memory leak, without making a cycle. Granted it is highly controversial case. One has to make call in the destructor of the owned object which loops back to the point of assignment. Is this something for the documentation, or may this indeed be flagged as a 'nut' case. [Proto] Compialtion-time of user-defined functions : terminals vs make_expr

As stated in a previous thread, the question was open on what to choose to build large number of functions inside Proto and Eric mentionned being interested by the results .. so ;) The choices were : - using a terminal containing the Polymorphic Function Object of the function and statcially instanciate it bp::terminal< my_func_pfo > my_func = {{}}; - using make_expr in a template function Here is the breakdown of measures I run this day using g++-4.3 and latest proto. I used Boost::Preprocessor to generate all the code and measured the compiel time on a streak of 100 compialtion for eahc version. asio Socket disconnection not working in 1.38?

I'm trying to detect that a peer has been disconnected using the asio socket library. Below is a source listing of a unit test that I have created (which is one of several that I have tried; ask for more listings if nesasary) to figure out a reliable method to do so. [random] Problems generating pseudorandom 64-bit ints across multiple computers

I am currently developing a distributed application where many clients need to generate unique 64-bit random numbers which will be used as keys. I am having problems getting boost to do this. For my first attempt, I tried something like the following: boost::mt19937 RandomNumberGenerator::s_algorithm; boost::uniform_int<unsigned long long> RandomNumberGenerator::s_range( std::numeric_limits<unsigned long long>::min(), std::numeric_limits<unsigned long long>::max()); boost::variate_generator<boost::mt19937&, boost::uniform_int<unsigned long long> > RandomNumberGenerator::s_rng(RandomNumberGenerator::s_algorithm, RandomNumberGenerator::s_range); I had two issues though: 1. Is this really giving me random 64 bit numbers, or is it just generating 32-bit numbers and then doing bit expansion? 2. The values always started with the same number. Trying to find a fix for #2, I though of using a hashed GUID as a seed. The problem is I noticed the seed value takes a 32 bit int, which essentially means a 1/2^32 chance of the first value colliding even if chosen completely randomly, which is unacceptable for my application. I am back where I started. Is there any clean way to use boost to generate random 64-bit intergers, when the same application is going to be run across multiple computers?

[Proto] Reducing domain check in operator

Actually, Proto defiens operators that STATIC_ASSERT when the left and right operand domain types are no the same using is_same. How could I have those check be looser than is_same ? Should I just overload boost::is_same for my domain type and perform a proper test here or is there a way to incorporate this into Proto ? Thanks in advance

Linking Boost in Code::Blocks

Okay, I've been trying to figure this out for a couple of weeks now... I'm using Boost 1.37 on Ubuntu Hardy Heron with Code::Blocks 8.02, Programming in C++.... Now, I'm rather new to Ubuntu, and just as much so programming in Ubuntu... Well, I've been working on this project, and I've been cross-developing it on Windows and Linux, but I've hit a hiccup once i've started using Boost... All works great on Windows using MinGW and Code::Blocks, however I cannot get the same code to run in Linux. The best I can think of is that there's a problem with the linking.... I've added the include path, and the lib path to the search directories, and I've added the libboost_serialization-gcc42-mt-1_37.a to the list of libraries but for some reason it still doesn't work... [filesystem] How to tell if a file is locked.

Is it possible using boost::filesystem functions to determine if a file is locked? I have a program which scans a directory for files and I want it to ignore locked files because other process are writing to them. Basically I want to do the following: get the file if (is_locked()) continue else process the file So I just want to know if it is locked. This must work for both Linux and Windows Vista. Dear all, I'm trying to find some magic that makes a member function of some object x accessible if and only if it were called from within a class that has object x as a member. Is there a (boost)-way of doing this? As this may seem a bit obscure, I'm trying to give an example: template <typename T, bool Writable> class Property { public: T get() const; void set(const T& val); private: T m_val; }; is a simple class holding a value of T. I have some classes holding potentially many Properties. I'd like to have these properties publically available, some as only readable, others writable as well, so that others (e.g. gui-classes) can access them: class A { public: Property<double, true > propA; Property<int , false> propB; }; so I may do: A a; a.propA.get(); a.propA.set(0.5); a.propB.get(); but NOT: a.propB.set(1); because propB was defined with Writable=false. BUT, from within class A, I would like to do propB.set(1); because otherwise this property is useless. (How) can this be achieved (with boost)? I could make set() private in the Writable=false - specialisation of Property and declare A as a friend, but that's prohibitive since Property shouldn't know about A and it won't work for derived classes of A. Another option would be class A { public: A() : propA(propA_priv), propB(propB_priv) {} PropertyWrapper<double, true > propA; PropertyWrapper<int , false> propB; private: Property<double> propA_priv; Property<int > propB_priv; }; so the actual properties are private and the wrapper provides the actual interface to the outside world. BGL question about districting

Hi, We're about an automated districting tool. We want to create Y districts from X polygons, all having a specific value (e.g. area or inhabitants), where the total value of each district is as similar as possible and each district is also as similar as possible. Let's call the value the "potential". Of course this problem is NP-hard so we're glad with the first solution or e.g. the first ten solutions. We thought to implement this by the Boost Graph Library. First we detect neighbour relations with our own Geometry Library (using the still-to-build "touches" relationship). We've a graph then and can divide the graph into subgraphs, each having connected nodes and an (nearly) equal "potential". I've some experience with BGL, having used the "connected_components". But I cannot find an appropriate algorithm for this problem, if it is available. Actually it even could be a "network flow" algorithm dividing the total potential by Y, and starting at some point flowing the potential through the graph. But all network flow algorithms seem to be on directed graphs. This is an undirected graph. It it is not possible with a standard BGL algorithm I think we can still solve it using BGL and e.g. breadth-sort-first, but just want to verify if it is possible or maybe by an unexpected workaround. Boost.Python linking error on Scratchbox

I have a program that uses Boost.Python and it compiles & links in normal desktop environment at x86 architecture (Ubuntu Linux) without any problems. I've compiled the same Boost libraries (1.37) in Scratchbox ARM environment, since my goal is to get my program running in Nokia N800 Internet Tablet as well. Compiling is successful, but when I try to link my code to Python libraries I get the following error: /usr/local/lib/libboost_python-gcc34-mt-1_37.so: undefined reference to `PyUnicodeUCS2_AsWideChar' /usr/local/lib/libboost_python-gcc34-mt-1_37.so: undefined reference to `PyUnicodeUCS2_FromEncodedObject' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status I haven't had any problems with other Boost libraries I've used in Scratchbox. Dynamic function call question

Hello, I've been trying to design a function dispatch system and I was wondering if the following is possible with the current boost libraries... I currently parse json data into an vector of variants, I would like to be able to take those variants and invoke an arbitrary boost function object with a consistent return type. Is it possible to determine the function argument types, get the typed value from the proper index in the array of variants, and call the function with arguments? This sounds like something the boost fusion library might be able to do, but I can't find any example code using the library to see if this is the right fit for the capabilities of the library or if what I'm looking to do is not possible without tons of boiler plate. C_time.hpp fails to get a vaild time

Dear Boost users I'm experiencing problem with the latest Boost version 1.3.8. When ever I try to get the current system time or do anything that needs the system time like: boost::xtime xt; boost::xtime_get(&xt, boost::TIME_UTC); The function c_time.hpp "static std::tm* gmtime(const std::time_t* t, std::tm* result) " Throws it's "could not convert calendar time to UTC time" exception. This might be thread specific but since xtime.hpp uses date_time functions I'm certain it is not. Version 1.3.6 does work fine. Am I missing some API changes? Regards Luke

Hi, Given a collection in terms of [startIter, endIter] how can obtain [uniqBeginIter, uniqEndIter] that represents unique elements of the original container. I can always explicitly instantiate a set S of [startIter, endIter] and use [S.begin(), S.end()]. Is it possible to express this in terms of algorithms. Please note that I won't be able to use std::sort as startIter does not conform to RandomAccessIterator. Its a forward iterator. Thanks Sandeep

Boost.Test on Non Exported Dll Classes

I have a bunch of dll projects that make up an application. I'd like to unit test these projects, but I have two problems: 1) The classes I'd like to test are in the dll and not all of them are exported; 2) Boost.Test doesn't have a main entry point, so if I solve 1 by packing my tests in the dll, how can I run them? If there is a better solution to 1, I'd love to hear it. Otherwise, how can I solve 2?

[archive]: Problem with creating a C-Interface DLL using Serialization/Archive

I'm writing a DLL which uses Boost for the Serialization (version 1.36.0). Because it has to maintain in different system I want to maintain a pure C-Interface DLL. As soon as I use the Boost-Library by activating the two lines boost::archive::text_iarchive ia(is); ia >> foo; in the function CNwDeSerialize_Test( ) it's C++ Interface becomes exposed in my C-Interface. Anybody got an idea why and what I can do to prevent it ? Some questions about cross-compiling boost

Hi,everyone. The version of boost I used is 1.38. I have tried to cross-compile the boost library for a platform with ARM and Linux, but I failed. What I did is listed following: #cd mypath/boost_1_38_0/tools/jam/src #./build/build.sh By doing these, I got a executable file named bjam in the folder "bin.linuxx86". I copied the bjam to the directory "mypath/boost_1_38_0/", then : #cd mypath/boost_1_38_0 #./bjam "-sGCC_ROOT_DIRECTORY=/opt/mv_pro_4.0/montavista/pro/devkit/arm/v5t_le" "-sGCC=arm_v5t_le-gcc" "-sGXX=arm_v5t_le-g++" "-sGCC_BIN_DIRECTORY=/opt/mv_pro_4.0/montavista/pro/devkit/arm/v5t_le/bin" finally, there were some libraries gengerated in "usr/local/lib". Unfortunately, these libraries just can be used in the X86 platform but not ARM platform. Maybe my method was incorrect. Could anyone give me some advices to deal with my problem? Thanks! shared_ptr and global reset

Hi Boosters Let's say that I have many shared_ptr<A> sharing ownership to the same A object. At some point, I would like all those shared_ptr to point to a new Object A. Is there an easy (and safe) way to accomplish that? I know how to do that for one shared_ptr using either "reset", either operator = but in order to do this for all shared_ptr sharing ownership, the only way I could think of is through a registration mechanism (like the Observer pattern) but this sounds an overkilling process to me. The solution to this one is provided by Joaquin, in his reply below: I tried compiling your code with MSVC++ 8.0 and it is indeed incredibly slow. After playing a little with the code I realized that MPL views are the culprit here: for some reason it is much faster to fold on a vector-based computation rather than a view: template<typename Sequence1,typename Sequence2> struct sequence_product : boost::mpl::fold< Sequence1, boost::mpl::vector0<>, boost::mpl::copy< boost::mpl::transform< Sequence2, pair_with<boost::mpl::_2> >, boost::mpl::back_inserter<boost::mpl::_1> > > {}; This transformation on sequence_product and seq_seqpair_product alone improved the performance tremendously. Would it make more sense to just provide release() and have users specify const if they want? Problem with boost::any?

Hello. I'm working with boost::any and shared_ptr. I'm implementing a plugin system which uses registration from .so files (under Linux). The problem is that I have a factory function which returns boost::any. This boost::any object holds a pointer type. The problem is that when I try to get the registered type back to its real type through boost::any_cast, the cast always fails. [accumulators] Strange behavior while extracting min using UDT

Hi, The following code when compiled by defining UDT will use a UDT as Sample (without the define, will use double). Some part of code is creating an object (when UDT) is used as acc_sample(0) and that is shown in min. In the following example, I am adding 3 samples and the count confirms that. However, on extracting the min, I get a value that I have not added (and this is created by the following call stack on windows XP using MSVC 2005) ntdll.dll!_DbgBreakPoint@0() My software is a plug-in for Photoshop compatible image editors. For some reasons (third-party lib problems with re-initialize in same process) software was splitted to "Thunk" (loaded into host process) and "Main" (started as separated process) modules. Last days I was busy trying to replace socket-based data exchange with boost.interprocess And encountered a BIG PROBLEM: Non-universal binary host runs under PowerPC-emulation (as well as my universal-binary "Thunk"), but "Main" executes x86 code. Two different processors -- x86 and emulated PowerPC -- have access to interprocess_* private uint32_t's, treating memory as MSB (PowerPC) and LSB (x86) simultaneously. Any ideas? -- Ivan Kharin

[Q] shared_ptr less than operator for std::set

I am trying to use shared_ptr in std::set and std::vector. For std::set I was expecting that when I define a less than comparasing operation in my class (wrapped by shared ptr) -- it would actually get invoked. Instead I think it is the less than of the shared_ptr that is being invoked So I do not get the ordering I expect in my std::set container. Therefore wanted to ask -- how can it be done, that the operator.< of my class and not the shared_ptr's is being used by std::set I searched for posting on this subject but did not come up with the solution. Hi, I am using boost::accumulator for finding min (among other things). It works fine when I use a POD as Sample. ex: accumulator_set< double, features <tag::min> > acc; acc(1.0); acc(5.0); .... I have my own data type, time stamp and value. Bulding Boost.Python on OSX

Forgive me, but it doesn't look like the specific Boost.Python list is active so I'm posting this here. I followed the relevant directions and built Boost.Python on my Mac using bjam, which gave the following output: ...patience... ...patience... ...found 1356 targets... ...updating 54 targets... <snip> ...failed updating 1 target... ...skipped 6 targets... ...updated 47 targets... I now see embedding.o and extending.o in the bin/gcc-4.01/debug directory within the quickstart directory. But when I run test_extending.py, the script fails and gives "ImportError: No module named extending". How do I get the python script to import the extending module? Thank you for your time.

Ok, I apologize I misunderstood the suggestion I made the function as non static member, but kept the input argument. If I make myfunc to take void, then it works. Link Boost::Python statically

Hello, I'm trying to link my Python extension module with static version of Boost::Python library. According to documentation, the auto_link facility should by default supply the library for static linking (libboost_python-vc80-mt-gd-1_38.lib in my case). Unfortunately it doesn't work that way for me - I get the import lib by default and have to supply boost_python dll. If I specifically provide the statically linked lib to the linker I get errors that symbols are defined multiple times by both the static library and the import library. I was able to link statically by: - defining BOOST_ALL_NO_LIB, - defining BOOST_PYTHON_STATIC_LIB, - adding libboost_python-vc80-mt-gd-1_38.lib to link libraries. While this worked I have a strong feeling that it's not the way it was meant to be. I'm using Visual Studio 2005 to compile my project (it's a Win32 DLL project), I'm using Boost 1.38 that I have compiled with bjam (which probably isn't relevant). All boost's *.lib files are in the same directory so they should be all accessible to the linker. I'm not aware of any BOOST_*_DYN_LINK being set (I have never set any Boost related defines other than the above. If you have any tips on how to verify that, I'd be grateful). Could you help me with this problem? Is there anything I should check that would cause the DLL to be used by default? -- Marcin Simonides

hello, When I enter the following reg-ex: "^.*ab+c+d+" for the following text: "aaaabbbcccdddee" the text found is:"aaaabbbcccd". The text found should be: "aaaabbbcccddd". Digging deeper, its seems that the reg-ex function ignores the last character if it is a "+". This is just using boost::regex_search with the flags = boost::match_any and boost::match_not_null Am I missing something here?

How to access each elements of a thread group separately

Hi I'm using several threads to do some parallel work. But I need to stop them separatly through the interrupt method. In order to store all these threads, I thought that I would use the thread_group class since I cannot use the vector class. But it looks like I cannot acces an element of a thread group (to interrupt it separately for example). Is there anyway of doing this that I'm not aware of ? Thanks in adavnace for the help. Problem with regular expression's validity and matching

Hi, I have two problems that I would need some help. Thanks in advance. Question 1: Please consider the regular expression to match US phone number below: (($\d{3}$?)|(\d{3}))([\s-./]?)(\d{3})([\s-./]?)(\d{4}) boost doesn't like it and it will throw an exception for the code below while it seems to be fine in online regex tester and .Net Regex library. I don't know what is imcompatiable with boost regex library. Boost's automatic selection of debug vs release libaries on link - how to disable?

Hello everyone, I've noticed that when linking Boost libraries, the linker implicitly knows whether it requires a debug or a release Boost library, and what the full name of the library is. E.g. on Windows the linker wants "boost_serialization-vc80-mt-d-1_37.lib" in debug and "boost_serialization-vc80-mt-1_37.lib" in release. I'm working in an SCons build system where SCons runs the show and the Boost libraries will be custom-renamed and the linker told specifically what libraries to link. Is there any way to disable this implicit naming feature in the bjam build step through a compiler option? Damien

What is this referring to? It does not seem to be the global release notes, which don't mention changes in test even when they occurred (e.g., 1.33). Nor can I find something in the docs for test, or groping around in the svn source tree. Ideally, I'd like a history of changes across different releases, so I know what I need to make my code compatible with the different versions. [boost::system] Is the library abstraction general enough?

Hi, all I'm currently building an asynchronous MySQL client API based on Boost.Asio, whose error handling is based on Boost.System. And thus, I wrote some code to wrap MySQL error codes and error messages with Boost.System. While writing the code, I found that the library doesn't provide a general enough abstraction. As the document says, there should always be only one instance of each error_category class. And each error_code instance communicates with its error_category through only the error number. Then here is the problem. MySQL error code is a property of a single MySQL connection. The mysql_errno() and mysql_error() functions both require a MYSQL* connection handle as parameter to retrieve the last error number and error message of the given MySQL connection. And the error messages provided by MySQL API are actually printf format strings. The mysql_error() function fills the format strings with information related to the MYSQL* handle. But in Boost.System, I've got no idea how to pass the connection handle to the error_category::message() function so that a proper error message can be retrieved. Is there any way to fix this problem? Or the library itself is just not general enough? You see, not all error numbers can be directly mapped to a well defined error message string. Cheers Cheng

I've attached a patch file. This line caused me no problems on Mac or Linux. Neither does its removal. [ASIO] io_service.run() call is not blocking until async_write completes

Hi Folks, I am using boost 1.36, and I have a C++ class that wraps calls to boost::asio sockets. There are two important functions: WriteData -- takes a vector of uint8_t's and uses async_write. WaitForPreviousWritestoComplete -- Here the user expects to block until all their previous writes are complete. Effectively this just calls io_service.run(). A user of this class can will WriteData a few times, and then do some other processing for a bit while the async_write is happening in the background, and then they should block at io_service.run() until the writes complete (and error status etc is checked). It was my understanding that io_service.run() call would block the thread of execution at that point until the pending writes on my output socket were complete. Am I wrong in my interpretation, because I see the user effectively doing: async_write async_write async_write io_service.run() async_write async_write io_service.run() The first call to io_service.run() correctly calls my message handler 3 times, for the 3 writes. The second call to io_service.run() I expect to see the handler called twice, but it is not called at all! If I get a bit tricky and do something like: async_write async_write async_write while (!all_writes_comple_flag){ io_service.run() } (the handler will set all_writes_comple_flag when all writes are complete :) ) then the code is effectively busy waiting at that point until it is done, but I do see the handler entered when I expect. Is there some timing issue occurring here? Perhaps the thread that is managing the socket stuff not had a chance to register that it has a pending write waiting? Am I misinterpreting what boost means in the documentation by saying the io_service.run() function blocks? If I am, what should I do to wait until all asynchronous writes are complete? thanks Nick
