Hi all, I am having trouble getting this function to work. [program_options] Getting access to the remaining argv

Hi there, I have a program ("A") that calls other, external programs ("B"). A can get a number of command line options, which are parsed with the help of the program_options library. B may also accept options (which are possibly defined by other people and not known to me in advance). Thus I want to pass all those options that are not known to A on to B, in the hope that they are needed for that program. Is there a way to retrieve the remaining argv string, with all options "known" to A removed ? Or should I better invent a flag of the following kind for A --external-options="-a 1 -b 2 -c 3" whose value is passed on to the external program ? Thanks and Best Regards, Ruediger

[asio] Synchronous/Asynchronous pattern

In an application we would like to support synchronous operations in the application layer, whereas operations below it are done with asynchronous operations. Callback handlers are not appropriate in this case, To make the example more clear, suppose you have a remote_vector which you would like to iterate through, remote_vector a(10); for( int i=0; i<10; ++i ) { std::cout << a[i] << std::endl; } here, a[i] will cause messages to be sent to retrieve the actual vector data before printing it. The network layer is hidden from the user. What is the best way to "emulate" synchronous behaviour with asio? The thread running this iteration should not block, but do other work (at the io_service?) until the requested results are received. Many thanks, Kind regards, Rutger ter Borg

condition_variable::timed_wait doesn't wait

Hi! I'm trying to use condition_variable::timed_wait without success. Using the following code, the timed_wait returns immediatly also if Receive() is never called. Hello Sohail actually test is never ment to return (check the for(;;) ;) - so this should not do any harm on the running program. This is definitely not a good coding style, but IMO acceptable for that simple non-productive example ;)

Static linking/GCC 4.3.2 on Linux (-fPIC missing?)

Hi, I've been using Boost 1.37 so far on Linux, and linked some libraries statically into a shared library. That is, I have a .so (Foo.so), which statically links in Boost.Filesystem (among others). Yesterday I tried to compile Boost 1.38 for Linux, everything worked fine, but as soon as it got to linking my .so, GCC stops as Boost.Filesystem has not been compiled with -fPIC. I don't remember I had to set -fPIC on 1.37 though. Setting cxxflags=-fPIC obviously solves the problem (along with a recompile of Boost), so my question is: Is this a regression? Did I miss something? The environment is Linux with GCC 4.3.2, on x64. Cheers, Anteru

Hi: I need to define a multi-dimensional array with 4 collumns and two rows, What is the correct way to do this? My current definition is: boost::multi_array<std::wstring, 2> table(boost::extents[4][Lines.size()]); Is this correct, Lines is a vector decared prevously in the code. Any help appreciated Sean.

Hi, I have something like the following object hierarchy: class Root {}; class A : Root {}; // BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT in header file class B : Root {}; // BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT in header file class U : A {}; // BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT in header file class V : A {}; // BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT in header file class X : B {}; // BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT in header file class Y : B {}; // BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT in header file There are a lot of shared pointers to the base classes Root, A and B which are to serialize.Boost 1.37 works fine while Boost 1.38 brings "redefinition of ‘struct boost::archive::detail::init_guid<A>" "redefinition of ‘struct boost::archive::detail::init_guid<B>" "redefinition of ‘struct boost::archive::detail::init_guid<U>" "redefinition of ‘struct boost::archive::detail::init_guid<V>" "redefinition of ‘struct boost::archive::detail::init_guid<X>" "redefinition of ‘struct boost::archive::detail::init_guid<Y>" after trying to link. It seems clear I have to put the BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT stuff in the belonging implementation files. But this corrupts the input of files which were created with the former binaries using the BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT in the header. I need an advice how and where the macro to place in terms of a long time decision. Below the class definition (which I find a good solution) seems no longer to work. Thank you very much, Jan.

[asio] communication with a remote apache tomcat service

Hello all: I'm working on a client program which needs to communicate with a remote server using an http based protocol ,which running a service (java servlet under apache tomcat). I developed it using the example in http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_38_0/doc/html/boost_asio/example/http/clien… as reference. When testing on a local server with apache tomcat deploying the service, (http://localhost:8084) it worked fine, since I established the communication with the server with these statements: tcp::resolver resolver(io_service); tcp::resolver::query query("127.0.0.1", 8084); tcp::resolver::iterator endpoint_iterator = resolver.resolve (query); It worked all right with that connection string, but when we deployed the service in a commercial remote server with apache tomcat preinstalled, the connection string has becomed something like this: "http://urltomyserver:8080/ServiceName" The problem here seems to be that I only can use tcp::resolver::query when I have an specific ip or url, and a connection port both separated but, apparently, now I need to specify the port within in the connection string. I couldn't make this work, and tcp::resolver::iterator endpoint_iterator = resolver.resolve(query) always either can't resolve the query or it gets timeout. Is there anyway I could use a connection string with the port specified within, like "http://urltomyserver:8080/ServiceName" and make it work with tcp::resolver::query? Do I need to find an alternative? The second option would be very expensive in developing time terms, so I'm hoping you could help me to make this work. Thanks a lot :) José Manuel Pulido

Hello, The error appears also in 1.38.0 unless I change the test_unit destructor to virtual. There is no need for Valgrind to popup the error: a simple gdb execution (MINGW widh gcc4.3.3) will show the error when the test application terminates. [Unordered] template find() request

Hello Boost, Suppose I have a boost::unordered_set<std::string>. Now I want to find() a const char *, std::string, or even a string without zero termination (Google StringPiece). Converting these to std::string just to do a lookup is wasteful. Instead, I want to provide functors like: struct either_hash { size_t operator()(const std::string &str) const { return boost::hash_range(str.begin(), str.end()); } size_t operator()(const char *str) const { return boost::hash_range(str, str + std::strlen(str)); } }; This raises the question: what is either_hash::argument_type ? But it seems this is not used by boost::unordered_set . It should probably be std::string to match the underlying hash table. Would it make sense to change find() to template <class query_type> const_iterator find(const query_type& q) const ? For those familiar with Google StringPiece, one solution is using boost::unordered_set<StringPiece>, but then I have to keep the underlying strings somewhere outside the table. Further, a generalized find is useful in other cases, but this was the easiest to explain. Kenneth

Using program_options from a string?

Hello all. I am using the boost::program_options library for configuration files with great success. I'm wondering if it's possible to use the library using a string as a source, instead of a config file. I read the configuration file with code like this: if (vm.count("config")) { string f = vm["config"].as<string>() ; ifstream ifs(f.c_str()); store(parse_config_file(ifs, config_file_options), vm); po::notify(vm); } but what I'd also like to do is something along these lines, with a string as the original source instead of a file specified with my 'config' command line option: string str = "port = 3000 \n tmpdir = /tmp \n"; // something like this. this is what's in the config file. istringstream iss(str, istringstream::in); store(parse_config_file(iss, config_file_options), vm); po::notify(vm); These lines compile and execute without error but don't actually appear to update the 'vm'. [serialization] nans and infinite floats in text based archives...

Hi serializers, archivers, boosters and Robert, I've used boost:serialization (boost 1.34.1 under Linux ubuntu and/or SL4,, gcc 4.2) for one year. Thanks to this excellent library, our team store critical experimental data (3 TB using zipped text archives). Up to now, I met no problem with text/XML archives as all the stored double values pass the 'isnormal' check. Now my new data analysis programs needs to (de)serialize doubles even if they are NaNs or infinites (for it makes sense for me). Unfortunately, the load method for double fails while reading 'nan' (or 'inf') from the input for this is the standard behavior of the ostream with "! isnormal" doubles. After studying the source code for boost text oriented I/O archives in the hope to find a fix for my problem, I made an attempt to make boost aware of nans and +/-infs in a pragmatic way (I mean trying to save time and storage but keep the information and get rid of the stream error exception). I attached a tiny tarball to show the hack I've done. I'm not sure at all this is be a definitively good and elegant approach to handle nans within text based archives. So I'd appreciate to get some feedback and comments from Robert or any expert in this field. [mem_fn] Ambiguous call to mem_fn with stdcall function

I'm trying to use g++ (and MinGW) to compile a win32 Direct3X program that I've written under Visual C++. All is well (so far) except for one thing. I'm using the technique suggested in the Boost shared_ptr documentation to store pointers to COM objects, which works fine under Visual C++ but under g++ (either 3.4.x or 4.3.x) I get errors about the call to mem_fn being ambiguous due to stdcall / non-stdcall overloading. I can't find any references to this problem on the net so I assume I'm doing something utterly boneheaded. Any hints would be very welcome. [regex] How to use ICU debug libs when building regex with bjam (win32)

Hi, In our debug builds, we build ICU in debug mode and it creates libraries with a "d" suffix (e.g. icuucd.lib). When I build boost regex now with: bjam.exe -sICU_PATH=<somepath>\icu -d+2 --debug-configuration toolset=msvc-9.0 threading=multi python-debugging=on link=shared variant=debug --without-mpi libs\regex\build it doesn't find the ICU libs and the linker complains. I then tried to give ICU_LINK (e.g. like this): bjam.exe -sICU_PATH=<somepath>\icu -sICU_LINK=icuucd.lib toolset=msvc-9.0 threading=multi python-debugging=on link=shared variant=debug --without-mpi libs\regex\build but it doesn't add the icuucd.lib to the linker file "bin.v2\libs\regex\build\msvc-9.0\debug\python-debugging-on\threading-multi\boost_regex-vc90-mt-gyd-1_38.dll.rsp" and I get unresolved symbols. Hello, My problem is really basic : I have N objects of type Type to store in a boost::interprocess::list<Type>. The question is easy : How many bytes should I provide to the managed_mapped_file, in order it fits correctly? So, I supposed I had to store (let's assume bi = boost::interprocess): + The list allocator : sizeof( bi::allocator<Type, bi::managed_shared_memory::segment_manager> ) + The struct of the list itself : sizeof( bi::list<Type, bi::allocator<Type, ...> > ) + The N nodes of the list containing each one of my objects : sizeof( bi::list<Type, ...>::Node) First issue : bi::list<Type, ...>::Node is private. Fine, I changed it as public. Second issue : sizeof(bi::list<Type, ...>::Node) was not enough, actually I can't add N objets, I was just able to allocate (N - x) objets Third issue : so I tried to fix the value of x, but x is not constant, it changes according to N... Thus I think, I made a mistake but where? or I forgot something but what? Interprocess windows_shared_memory 1.35

I am attempting to create a windows_shared_memory object for a large file that exists using Boost 1.35. I have attempted to create it 2 ways: interprocess::windows_shared_memory *wsm = new interprocess::windows_shared_memory(interprocess::open_or_create, fileName.c_str(), interprocess::read_only,fileSize); I am getting an interprocess exception that the system cannot find the path specified. (boost::error_info is 'not_found_error') The file is valid as previous boost::filesystem calls can successfully create a path object, append a file name and get the file size. The file is large (110MB) so I also attempted a size of 1000 -- same exception. After stepping through some code, it seems I am getting the exception in win32_api.hpp when the CreateFileMappingA is called. Has anyone had issues with windows_shared_memory objects in the 1.35 version? Thanks. Joy

Hi, we used to compile boost regex in boost version 1.36 with the following command: bjam.exe -sHAVE_ICU=1 -sICU_PATH=../../../../icu -sBOOST_REGEX_RECURSIVE toolset=msvc-7.1 threading=multi python-debugging=on link=shared variant=debug --without-mpi libs\regex\build When switching to boost 1.38, we realized that BOOST_REGEX_RECURSIVE is not passed/picked up anymore when using the same command (apart compiler version to compile (verified with some added pragma messages): How should this be configured nowadays? Or did it never work that way but the default behaviour changed? Maybe the user-config.jam file should be used, but I didn't find an example of how to do this. Thanks a lot, Chris

Almost every useful Proto program has workarounds for an MSVC bug that causes syntax errors on valid nested function types. Eric Niebler filed a bug report with Microsoft on 6/14/2007 and they closed it on 6/19/2007 with status "Closed(Won't Fix)". This is back in the days of Visual Studio 2005. I'd like to encourage Microsoft to reopen this bug report and fix it. boost library advice wanted

Hi: I am in the process of implementing a program that turned commands from voice recognition software in to code that are entered in to an application. there are approximately 200 codes available in this particular sofware I am automating. Wile I could use boost::stringAlgo along with the functions available in the stl there must be a better alternative. To give an idea of howthis would work the user might say: conditional new line, and [l] would be placed in the current document onscreen. the user could say skip 5 lines and [sk5] would be entered.

xcode iphone vs regular project issues

Hi. I have worked on boost before using Visual Studios and loved using it. I am using a mac for some development now with xcode. My question is 2 fold. First off, on a regular c++ project I can use boost no problem, but I haven't seen how to get the auto complete to list functions through the -> operator. Has anyone had luck? In visual studios i could include the header and the non template header in my project to get this functionality to work. Second question is, when developing a project that was created using the iphone template the program fails to compile when I include any boost.h files, even though I am including them in the exact same way that was succesfull in the c++ project. Has anyone tried this?

xcode smart pointers

I figured out both my problems. Boost works fine in iphone projects, you just need to have all your source code end in .mm to enable objective-c++ and the other problem is caused because xcode cannot handle templates when it comes to code insight(or namespaces supposidly). Thats really unfortunate.

Nstate: dynamic_bitset generalized for bounded integer values?

Hello boost-users! I've written a class in the same spirit as the dynamic_bitset. But instead of being restricted to inserting values that range [0..1], the packed values can range from [0..radix-1]. Nothing that fancy, but a few people on #boost IRC thought it looked potentially useful, so I decided to try announcing it here. The library is called "Nstate", and is released under the boost software license (of course!) http://hostilefork.com/nstate/ As an example, I point out that it can fit 20 "Tristates" (a.k.a. Nstate<3>) into 32 bits, as opposed to 20 bytes (if one used a packing approach with 2 bits per tristate, you would only get 16 of them out of 32 bits). I'm guessing this would be low on the radar in terms of getting vetted for inclusion in boost. But if anyone out there is looking for something *like* this, here's a start. I'd certainly appreciate any peer review or wisdom to help make it better, faster, smarter...boostier? [signals2] Usage (lifespan) question

I'd like suggestions for an API designed around Boost.Signals2. This isn't performance-critical. Assume a publish class containing a boost::signals2::signal. This class's listen() method is a thin wrapper around signal::connect(). Using boost::bind, I can listen() with any method (with appropriate signature) on any class. I'm trying to introduce the concept of filter objects. Each filter is itself a publish object. Client logic composes a chain from some publish object through zero or more filters to the ultimate listener. A filter passes along to its own listeners some subset of the input notifications. The central issue is the lifespan of a filter object. I want the filter objects in such a chain implicitly freed when the ultimate listener disconnects. Approach 1 ========== I could achieve that by managing each filter object with shared_ptr, storing a copy in each listener. When the last listener is destroyed, the filter goes away. (This assumes passing weak_ptr to boost::bind() so the connection itself doesn't keep the listener alive. Further assume I've used connection::track() so that the signal to which the filter is connected implicitly disconnects.) Naturally this effect cascades "upstream" through the filter chain. But it bothers me that such an implementation imposes new requirements on each listener. Beyond declaring a method with the right signature, the listener must now store a shared_ptr to the publish object to which it's listening. That implies a method on the listener to capture the shared_ptr and establish the connection. Therefore, every listener must be derived from some particular base class, and explicit connection and disconnection must be done through the listener rather than directly through the publish object. Either this new inverted API must apply to all publishers/listeners, or client logic must distinguish between the case of connecting to a filter and connecting to any other type of publish object. It feels to me as though this approach has gone into the weeds. Approach 2 ========== Instead of passing a filter's weak_ptr to boost::bind() to the publish object's listen() method, I could instead pass the filter's shared_ptr. Now the publish object upstream from the filter is responsible for the filter's lifespan: when the filter explicitly disconnects, it will (eventually) go away. It will not implicitly disconnect because it won't go away as long as the connection still holds a copy of its shared_ptr. (Frank says[1] he might tweak the library to forget a shared_ptr immediately on disconnect, but currently it survives for a while.) Consider a chain: A is the original publish object B is a filter listening to A C is the ultimate listener, listening to B Again, the goal is to disconnect B (thus deleting it) when C disconnects or is destroyed. We could make B store its connection object to A. The question is, how would B know to disconnect it? How could B become aware of C disconnecting from B's signal object? [boost::program_options] Different usage

Hello, I'm wondering if I should use boost::program_options and I got some questions about it. All examples that I found are using std::string and std::ostream everytime they're dealing with values being some kind of text... so to display the "usage" of their program they would do something like... cout << desc; 'desc' being a boost::program_options::options_description. or... when adding options to their command line... desc.add_options() ... ("opt", boost::program_options::value<std::string>, "desc") ... What I want to know is, if I didn't want to use std::string nor std::ostream nor std anything in my specific code (I know boost uses it). Is there a not-so-time-expensive way to do it? [asio] serial port howto?

Hi! For first time users of asio it is not easy to get things started. I found a demo application (minicom_client) on the web, but it uses a raw io_service. In the reference docs I found serial_port_service. What is the difference? Can I use serial_port_service as a drop in replacement where an io_service normally is used? Boost thread priority

Hello! I want to set the priority of a boost thread. It seems that this feature is not (yet) implemented and the only option is to go to lower level (pthread in my case). The documentation says that the method native_handle() should return the handler of the associated pthread. The problem is that this method no longer exists (for the pthread implemention; it is there for the win32 version). Anyone knows how to get the pthread handler of a boost thread (I'm using the 1.35 vesion) -- Andrei Vancea

That has resulted in libraries with the following name convention. libboost_system-mt.lib libboost_date_time-mt.lib Auto link triggers in even if I define BOOST_ALL_NO_LIB. [iostreams] with compression filters?

Dear boosters, I'm trying to compile IOStreams from 1.38.0 with bzip2 compression enabled on windows. The docs say "you will need to set variables indicating the location of the source files". Setting boost.build variables in user-config.jam doesn't seem to do the trick. Providing "-s|BZIP2_SOURCE|=..." or any of the other related variables or combinations thereof on the command line for bjam does not help. Does anyone out there have an example on how to do this exactly? I suggest such an example to be added to the documentation. Or is this a bug in the build system? Regards, Mikko

Calling date_time time_input_facet directly

I have to parse a leading timestamp in a bunch of records, and I would like to avoid having to copy each record into a stringstream just to parser the timestamp. Does anyone know how to call the date_time time_input_facet directly? I did something like the following: char buffer[N]; typedef boost::date_time::time_input_facet<boost::posix_time::ptime, char, char *> TimeFacet; TimeFacet *f = new TimeFacet; boost::posix_time::ptime t; f->get(buffer, buffer + size, ???, t); But I don't know what to pass for the 3rd arg, which is an ios_base &. VS 2008 Link1104 Error

Hello everyone, I've just built the boost libraries and I'm trying to get visual studio 2008 to properly recognize the libraries. The library that the linker is looking for is in C:\development\boost\build\boost\bin.v2\libs\filesystem\build\msvc-9.0\debug\link-static\threading-multi\libboost_filesystem-vc90-mt-gd-1_38.lib Even though I've added C:\development\boost\build\boost\bin.v2\libs to the extra libraries vc++ global setting. Error Message: 1>LINK : fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'libboost_filesystem-vc90-mt-gd-1_38.lib' If I add C:\development\boost\build\boost\bin.v2\libs\filesystem\build\msvc-9.0\debug\link-static\threading-multi to the project extra library setting though, the program compiles and links properly. On MSDN, http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ts7eyw4s.aspx I've seen nothing that I think applies to me. So, what do I do?

Hi, I've recently been making more use of boost::bind, and I coded the following, which I thought would work: class A { public: void reset () {} }; typedef std::map<int, boost::shared_ptr<A> > map_type; map_type m; std::for_each (m.begin(), m.end(), boost::bind(&A::reset, boost::bind(&map_type::value_type::second, _1))); but fails to compile. Next I tried this: std::for_each (m.begin(), m.end(), boost::bind(&A::reset, boost::bind(&boost::shared_ptr<A>::get, boost::bind(&map_type::value_type::second, _1)))); Which works and is fine (I guess). I just wonder why the first syntax is not supported? boost::shared_ptr is supposed to behave like a pointer (and here it seems that it does not). -- Kevin

Hi, The following issue seems to have been discussed on this list a while ago, but nothing seems to have changed since and I was usable to find a proper answer so far. The edge_range() function uses std::equal_range() to extract a pair of iterators to the edges of interest. The problem lies in the fact that according to the SGI STL documentation, std::equal_range() requires the entries to be sorted (although I found no explicit mention of that in the standard). With hash_setS as OutEdgeList in adjacency_list, the entries are obviously not sorted, and std::equal_range() must not be used. While it's easy to write an edge_range_custom() function that would call the equal_range() method instead of the global function, nothing can be done to prevent the use of the original edge_range() by other library code like bidirectional_graph_helper_with_property::get_parallel_edge_sublist(). These overloaded methods are called from within remove_edge() which apparently causes trouble with hash_setS. I tried myself to overload the original edge_range(), for the case where hash_setS is used, but the solution is far from elegant and it feels like something be better done upstream. This may be a little OT but as it applies to metaprogramming and ideas from the book I thought it the best place to ask. On pgs 191/2 of the MPL book (section 9.5) is a set of ideas meant to introduce the inherit_linearly metafunction. There are some things I want to do that suggested this was actually the better way to go for me. The field concept is something I need for what I'm working on that currently, for this test, just has a type in it. I create a "record" like so: typedef generate_record< boost::mpl::vector<field1, field2, field3> >::type test_record; When I print the type I end up with: "rec<field3,rec<field2,rec<field1,empty> > >" and in main attempt to access it: test_record tr; get<field1>(tr) = 3; This works fine in comeau and I'd expect it to work anywhere but MSVC++ 8 doesn't like it. It says that the FIELD param is ambiguous and could be field1 (what I specified in the call) or field3 (the first field on the inheritance tree). This version contains some update for Channel to work with the latest boost distributions and change to boost license, since there are several requests for me to update and upload to Vault. A brief description: Channel procides name space for distributed message passing and event dispatching. Its major components (message IDs, routing algorithms...) are configurable as template parameters. Is the subject Jehova enough for you? ;-) Great. Well, I haven't raised the subject so far but I'd certainly like to do so now. For years now I am not only a user but also an admirer of boost asio. Something that has always puzzled me however is, why a timeout functionality which is something very common and essential for sync IO just doesn't seem to be there. I think there are cases where syncronous IO is a better way to go and no async approach is sensible. In my case this is a collection of static functions that do UDP communication and therefore have to be sync because I just want them to be able to return and throw exceptions and be able to be called from anyone at any time. As always when I stumble across the asio/timeout problem I start googling around. When people raise the topic here they are usually pointed to an answer Chris Kohlhoff gave to someone asking that: http://lists.boost.org/Archives/boost/2007/04/120339.php ... which is good for tcp and works alright even though in my opinion it leaves the question why it has to be so compilicated to do something so basic. IMHO sync IO is all but pointless without a timeout. First, the performance impact is massive to a point that forces me to reconsider. Second, when I use that in a multithreaded environment the whole thing seems to block in some threads randomly. I have made test program where I have multiple threads using that method, just sending an UDP request to a server and waiting for an answer using this function. In one thread everything is slow but continously running. In more than one thread it blocks for up to 5 or 6 seconds every few (10-20) runs for no visible reason. In my scenario all those threads share a socket protected by a mutex so if one of them blocks all will be halted. So I come to think this is not a good way to handle the problem. Does anyone have some thoughts on that? May this be a bug in asio (1.38) or perhaps in my function? Or is there a better way to do sync UDP IO with a timeout functionality? Cheers... Stephan

Is it safe to store vertex descriptors? Does adding a new vertex / edge ever renumber existing vertices? (I know removing does this) Say I have a class to represent a state from the USA. class State { ... }; and I have a bunch of instances: State california, oregon, nevada, hawaii, ...; I want a graph with a vertex for each state and an edge for each border: typedef adjacency_list<vecS, vecS, bidirectionalS> Graph; Graph graph; I build my graph like this: Graph::vertex_descriptor v_california = add_vertex(graph); Graph::vertex_descriptor v_oregon = add_vertex(graph); Graph::vertex_descriptor v_nevada = add_vertex(graph); Graph::vertex_descriptor v_hawaii = add_vertex(graph); ... add_edge(v_california, v_oregon, graph); add_edge(v_california, v_nevada, graph); add_edge(v_nevada, v_oregon, graph); ... Compile error with QNX compiler

I am using the QNX 6.4.0 development environment (based on gcc 4.2.4) to compile boost_thread-static-mt from boost 1.38, and I am getting the following errors. Since, it is, I have to declare properties I want to use in the visitor, but then I have to pass them in in the constructor for the class that contains the graph and the visitor structure ... Dear Boost Users, I am new with Boost and I am facing a Unhandled exception. The program I am triying to use is working fine in release mode but crashing in debug mode. Maybe compiler options are not set correctly. Is there something specific for release and/or debug version ? Something to diseable exceptions ? I am working with VStudio 8. I've set the same compiler options for both but I still have the same error. Any ideas ? Including a source library with Boost.Build

I have a source library I'd like to include in my Boost.Build project. The library consists of an assortment of header and cpp files in a folder next to the main cpp file and jamfile. It doesn't require any elaborate precompilation, so it should work just by #including the appropriate header files in the main cpp file (i.e., #include "FolderName/FileName.h"). My question is, do I need to do anything other than that to make this work? I'm getting an "undefined symbols" error, so clearly Boost.Build not finding something correctly.

Basically marshalling an object and sending it to a remote application. There is a simple asio example using serialization, but there are two issues I'd like to improve. [1] I am concerned about performance. The example constructs and destructs an archive for every single object and uses stringstream, which creates and copies a string object. Wouldn't using asio::tcp::iostreams give better performance? and [2]: I would like to utilize the boost.serialize class registration system to allow peer programmers to create new objects. In the example I would need to send a 'type' and the size manually in a 'header' before I serialize and send the actual object. That would require a system wide enumeration or other 'type' mechanism. My idea is to require all objects be derived from a common polymorphic base and then serialize a pointer to the object. The archive would serialize the entire object and also send type information with it, so the receiver could reconstruct the object simply by receiving a pointer. class basic_command; class my_command:public basic_command; On the senders side: my_command dosomething; archive << &dosomething; On the receiver side: basic_command *next_command; archive >> next_command; next_command->execute(); This would have the benefit that new commands could simply be created by deriving from basic_command. It might also have performance consequences and I have one specific question: For this in order to work I would need to disable tracking for 'my_command'. Otherwise only the very first instance of archive << &dosomething would actually send something. Question: Can I 'reset' the binary archive such that the tracking information is reset, but not the type information? Or can I temporarily disable tracking for a class or for the next save/load operation? I don't want to globally disable tracking for my_command, because I cannot rule out that someone might actually want tracking for their object in a different archive (such as saving settings to disk). I'd love to hear from you and any comments are welcome. Has anyone already done this? What are your experiences? Regards Hajo

I am also very grateful for the extremely timely help I have got in the past from the principal authors Matthias Schabel and Steven Watanabe. Is there any way to force implicit conversion of Angstrom quantities to nanometer quantities in assignment and method calls using Boost.Units? I would appreciate any suggestions on how to get the final three method calls in the attached program to compile. I suppose I could overload the showBondLength() method in this example to take both types. I think I would prefer implicit conversion, if that is possible. I've been struggling with a problem with using regex_replace this afternoon, and I would appreciate some pointers on properly using the regex package. I've got a file that is similar to a CSS style sheet (it's actually a Qt style sheet) that contains color entries that similar to: rgb( 200, 255, 200 ). I've already successfully written some code that finds these patterns and replaced them with statically determined text, just to verify that I was able to locate them all properly. I have an application in which the color scheme of the user interface (specified in the style sheet) has to change between a daytime and nighttime color scheme. The nighttime color scheme is derived from the daytime color scheme by reducing the luminance of the colors. I'd like to generate the nighttime color scheme from the daytime scheme by extracting the components of the color and applying a calculation to them, then replacing the original text with the new text. The examples on the Boost site for regex_replace all demonstrate replacement with static text. I suspect that I have to do some sort of combination using regex_replace, regex_iterator, and match_results, but I can't quite wrap my head around the documentation for these classes to see how they interoperate. I don't think that accounts for all of the difference, but my guess is it's a big part of it. In my opinion using insert with a hint is an easy way to improve the performance of the Boost Serialization library when loading instances of (multi)set, multi(map) and rb_tree. To my knowledge the only draw back with that is if someone is serializing from say a list<int> to a set<int> and the data in the list is not ordered. In that case using a hint would impede performance. Since that situation does not come up a lot, I think using hinted inserts as a default makes sense. We plan to change (this month) from a default of "regular" insert functions to hinted inserts for the types mentioned here. Currently we have a @hi option to turn on hinted inserts. That will change to @nohi to turn them off and could be used if data from a non-ordered list<int> is being sent to a set<int>. [Proto] Splitting AST

Let's say I want to take an expression involving operators +,-,*,/ and a function split. What I want to do is writing a transform taking such an expression and returning a fusion::vector or list (I guess) of expressions containing all sub-expressions of the original AST only separated on each insatcne of a split call. E.g : Xpr = a+b+split( c*d + split(e-f)); is turned into Xprs = [ a+b+placeholder<1>, c*d+placeholder<2>, e-f]; I guess I should use the State/Data parameters of the transform but i can't get the thing right. Hi: I have a boost::filesystem::wpath object. I need to firstly check if the file exists, and secondly delete and check the file has been deleted. How would I go about this? I've loked at the reference and carn't seem to make sense, are thee any examples of both these functions? Any help apreciated. Sean.

Installing boost 1.38 in UBUNTU 8.10

Hey guys, I am having trouble linking my boost libraries to a program I am trying to install. I need to install boost versions above 1.37 and ubuntu doesn't have packages yet for anything above 1.35. I've tried using the export command using: export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/home/(my username)/pool/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH and I still get the same error message. I even added the library folder into my ld.so.conf.d and ran ldconfig to restart ld, but I still get the same error. Please help. Jan

Template method applied to template object

Did you verify that you have a file named boost_python-gcc41-mt.so or boost_python-gcc41-mt.a? Depending on the options you used when you installed boost they may have a different name, such as without the gcc42 or with an extra -1.38. Yes I verified that those are the names. My compiler version is gcc41. I had to downgrade from gcc42 to gcc41 because Cuda has problems running at higher versions of the compiler. To install hedge or pycuda, I only have to put boost_python-gcc41-mt in this file he wants us to make: The following text should be placed in $HOME/.aksetup-defaults.py: BOOST_INC_DIR = ['/users/sfield/pool/include/boost-1_38/'] BOOST_LIB_DIR = ['/users/sfield/pool/lib'] BOOST_BINDINGS_INC_DIR = ['/users/sfield/pool/include/boost-numeric-bindings/'] BOOST_PYTHON_LIBNAME = ['boost_python-gcc41-mt'] BOOST_MPI_LIBNAME = ['boost_mpi-gcc41-mt'] # WITH_SPARSE_WRAPPERS = True Should I try to change the name to boost_python-gcc41-mt.so or boost_python-gcc41.a? problems with 32-bit Boost libs on Linux 64-bit with multilib gcc

Hi all, I'm having some problems with building a 32-bit Boost on a 64-bit Linux. I'm building 1.38 and I need 64 and 32-bit version of the libraries. The compiler is gcc 4.3.2 with the multilibs installed (Ubuntu 8.10). My builds go through successfully, but when I link my 32-bit version of my application to what should be 32-bit Boost libraries, I get the "skipping incompatible" warning from the linker, which means that the address model is wrong. For example: /usr/bin/ld: skipping incompatible 3rdparty/boost/linux/x86/debug/libboost_serialization-gcc43-mt-d-1_38.so The 64-bit libraries are fine and the application links and runs correctly. I noticed in gcc.jam there's a comment about not being able to build a clean 32-bit binary with a 64-bit compiler. This is my bjam command for a 32-bit Boost build: bjam --build-dir=./build32 address-model=32 --build-type=complete --stagedir=./stage32 stage Do I need a -m32 in a config file or something extra on that command line? I was trying to test my code on gcc and since do not have access to linux, I used cygwin gcc v 4.3.2 with boost 1.38. I first built bjam (it went Ok). copied it to /bin then created symlink g++ to gcc-4 (cygwin has gcc 4.3.2 as gcc-4) and then with this command bjam toolset=gcc variant=debug release link=shared threading=multi runtime-link=shared stage started the build thread library built (although I am not sure if pthreads are supported on cygwin, may be it was just a dummy library). Many link errors. Visual C++ 9.0 + WinCE

I'm using Boost 1.37 and I've found that using the headers to develop WinCE applications with WinCE causes Boost header config/compiler/visualc.hpp to emit the EVC++ version not recognized. [Function] Small function optimization

A while back I wrote some code which made heavy use of small boost::functions, using Boost 1.33.1. The performance hit was pretty grim, and in the end I had to take thme out and use non generic hand rolled solutions. However, we have recently upgraded to Boost 1.37, and I notive from all the Boost version issue docs that a small function optimization was added in n Boost 1.35. Can anyone tell me in general terms what was done, and possibly if I'm likely to find the performance significantly better now. Many Thanks, Rob.
