Passing arguments to threads

I am working on an application that takes use of boost::thread. During the initial method of my application I need to pass one argument to the method. As per the api documentation for boost::thread I am using the following: boost::thread dataThread(dparse.dataMain,instUUID); dataThread.join(); However, when I attempt to use this, I get the following exception from my compiler. Is there something that I am missing? I do not see how my thread constructor is any different from the constructor in the api documentation. [Lexical Cast] Strange behaviour

I know this is not new, but I've just bumped into it.... It's an accuate reflection of how the underlying C library handles it, but do we want to propogate this strangeness? Rob.

[asio] io_service threadpool performance

Dear all, I have been testing asio's io_service in a threadpool setup for job dispatching. However, it seems as if adding threads doesn't improve performance; perhaps even the opposite with 1 thread having the best performance. See below for some results of a simple test I'm doing, posting 10 M jobs to the io_service, and starting N threads at io_service::run after that. Timings below are measured on an 8-core machine, I would expect the execution performance to improve (not to get worse) for execution by more threads. Posting to the io_service is done single-threaded, so these timings should remain approx. the same. Please find attached the test program. Is there something I've missed and/or should tweak to get the desired improvement per added thread? Range_Ex and Multi-Index: conflicting mpl::begin and boost::begin

Hello. I have a library which exposes the following function: namespace ftr { Player & getPlayer(int num); } and it's exposed to python by: def("getPlayer", &ftr::getPlayer, return_value_policy<reference_existing_object>()); This code used to work, but now I compile it and get this error when using it from the python module, under ubuntu 9.04: Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/apport_python_hook.py", line 77, in apport_excepthook pr['PythonArgs'] = '%r' % sys.argv AttributeError: 'module' object has no attribute 'argv' Original exception was: Traceback (most recent call last): File "<string>", line 1, in <module> Boost.Python.ArgumentError: Python argument types in ftr.getPlayer(int) did not match C++ signature: getPlayer(int) Any help here, please? factorial function

Hi everyone, I'm new to boost (and not so new but not very experienced to c++) and I'm having problems with functions defined with a template, as factorial (http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_38_0/libs/math/doc/sf_and_dist/html/math_to…) My questions is, how do I call the funtion factorial? How to post a work into a io_service and wait for it run complete?

I created a io_service in main thread, for dispatch user request. And i created another io_service in a thread_pool, run some sync work(like database query). After main thread got some user request, it post a query into the io_service running in the thread_pool. After the query has been completed, query thread post a work to the main thread. But the next query cannot be handled until the last result was closed. So query thread need to wait main thread until it'll not using the result any more. How to do it? Now I write some code with mutex and condition_variables. but is there any better choice with out such things?

I'm looking into the possibilities of using Boost.Parameter to introduce extra user-friendliness to a part of the numeric-bindings libraries (in this particular case, bindings for BLAS and LAPACK). Boost.Parameter looks like it is exactly what I need, making it easy to write functions with a couple of required, and many optional parameters. What I couldn't immediately catch from the documentation, is what the types of the passed arguments are of a BOOST_PARAMETER_FUNCTION. E.g., the example in section 2.1.4 says BOOST_PARAMETER_FUNCTION( [snip] ) { // ... body of function goes here... // use graph, visitor, index_map, and color_map } but it is not clear to me is how to easily get to the type of graph, visitor, etc., in the body of the function. I have a very simple app that I'm trying to link with the Boost date_time library. It links and runs fine with I build against the RELEASE configuration. How to use lock_guard

Hi, I'm tring to use lock_guard, but I have some doubts... I have a method called OnDataReceived() which is called by another class through a signal. void ATDispatcher::OnDataReceived() { boost::lock_guard<boost::mutex> lock(_mut); // Data received from RS232 _device.GetData(_buffer); // .... CODE .... // unlock the mutex before notifications lock.~lock_guard(); signal_OnData(); } The first time it's called, it works fine. The second time the flow locks on the creation of the lock object. In the caller class I have solved this declaring the lock in this manner: boost::mutex::scoped_lock lock(_mutex); lock.unlock(); while (true) { //main loop lock.lock(); // saving data to vector _read_buffer.append(buf, rd); //Unlock the mutex lock.unlock(); signal_OnData(); } but here because there is the worker thread loop, while in the called class there is no loop. The problem is in sentences like this: dp.property("min",get(&V::min,g)); where dp is a reference to a dynamic_properties object, g is a const reference to a graph and V is the type of vertex bundled properties of graph g (min is one of those properties). Commenting out all lines like this, everything compiles perfectly. Looks like, somehow, that sentence tries to modify properties in graph g and, as g is const, it fails to compile. Hi, I'm using boost ver 1.35 on Linux. When I've installed boost on my Linux machine, the build created dynamic libraries (only .so). How can I build boost on Linux so it'll create static libraries as well? Thanks!

[Boost users] MacPorts and Boost path issues

I am a command-line user of C++ and boost. I installed boost on Mac Leopard using mac ports like this: sudo port install boost I saw as it installed that macports was using bjam, and the version was 1.37. I want to use boost/regex.hpp, so I know it's not just a matter of including a header file. When I compile my own source files, I see a variety of paths, such as /opt/local/var/macports/sources/rsync.macports.org/release/ports/devel/boost /opt/local/var/macports/sources/ rsync.macports.org/release/ports/devel/boost/files etc My first question is, when I compile my work on command line using g++: i.e., g++ myfile.cpp -o myfile which of these paths should I include? I think I am supposed to do something like g++ -I /path/to/boost myfile.cpp -o myfile but I do not understand how a person knows which dir to use. Another way of asking this is: If YOU sat down at my machine and decided to use boost, what would you do to a)find it and b)include it in your pre-processor includes? Is there clear documentation on how a fellow figures out where the install is located, and then shows how to include it? Perhaps I simply don't know what to ask for, but when I google for this I gfind a zillion unrelated things. Do I in fact need to do the "-I /silly/long/path/to/the/bowels/of/the/machine/where/macports/hid/buried/installed/boost" every single time I compile something?? It occured to me to try a soft link somewhere in my development dir to save typing, but in order to do that of course I first need to figure out where boost actually resides in the system. I also have fink installed on the system, and fink says that boost1.33 is installed. So how in the world do I update fink to accept a later version? When I try to update, fink says no update is needed. Thanks in advance for the hand-holding. Boost documention has following code in the paragraph "Scoped lock" (reference to the paragraph is here.../html/interprocess/synchronization_mechanisms.html#interprocess.synchron ization_mechanisms.mutexes) using namespace boost::interprocess; //Let's create any mutex type: MutexType mutex; ... I did not find a reference to available types declarations. Paragraph above "Scoped lock" talks about mutex types, but I did not find type declarations. My question is: where are available types declared? I will also appreciate the example of such declaration that shows what #include should be used.

another metaprogramming question

This seems to me like it should work. Yet the check() call resolves, without error, to the first one...which should cause an error and trigger SFINAE. Can anyone help me figure out what gives? Compiler is MSVC++ 8. Normally the SFINAE stuff works so I'm betting on my mistake this time. Basically I need to check it the metafunction meta<T> returns something. If it does then the object is a record. gcc optimization and boost::any

Is anyone aware of a bug/quirk in boost::any that is exposed by GCC optimization? (Or vice versa: a bug in GCC optimization exposed by boost::any)? We've got a particularly insidious runtime bug that appears under `-O2` with gcc version 4.2.2, but not with gcc 3.3.3, and not with gcc 4.3.3. We narrowed it down to a single .cpp file, which contains a single method, which does nothing but call boost::any_cast several times to extract a pointer from a boost::any instance. By compiling this file under -O2, (gcc version 4.2.2) we can cause the bug. By compiling without any `-O` flags, the bug does not appear. (boost version 1_34_1). We're working to identify a minimal test case that we can post here. We still haven't pinpointed the exact cause. To be clear, we're not 100% sure the bug is in boost::any or gcc -- it merely appears to be so since changing compiler flags or compiler versions makes the bug disappear. If you know of such a bug or quirk in either GCC or boost::any, or of a write-up of this somewhere... or even some idle speculation... it could save us a lot of time tracking this down. Interprocess general questions

Hi, I am using Boost.interprocess for the first time and read the documentation. It is difficult for me to decide what construct would best fit my scheme, because of all the options. I hope that somebody could help me find out. I am using Boost 1.38 on Ubuntu 8.10. In my setup, I have one parent process that forks many (could be hundreds) child processes. In the parent process I need to maintain a data-queue. The child processes insert data into the queue and once every X seconds the parent removes all messages from the queue (in order to dump it to a database). The data is one type only and fixed length: A struct with a few doubles, a few integers and a fixed-length string. Because there can be hundreds of child processes that insert into the data-queue many times a second, I guess it would make sense to have multiple data regions in one big shared memory segment, each with it's own synchronization mechanism? I mean, it is important that the child processes are able to insert the data fast and do not suffer lock contention too much (a "little" overhead is fine though). So my question is what components from the Boost.interprocess-library should I use? Any other comments and/or tips before I start coding? Thank you! Andrej van der Zee

Hi, I am new to linux and also to boost library.. I am planning to install boost library in linux box (which is a production machine with no net connectivity). i have already got the linux version of boost in that machine and now I am planning to install it. Can please somebody tell me what are the steps needs to be done to install linux.. with commands (I cant use any tool that boost provide to install because ther is no net connectivity in that box). I have gone through the boost website .. but it looks very complicated :) also I have gone through couple of websites but it was not much usefull. Why "Mixing a dll boost library with a static runtime is a really bad idea..."?

Hi, I want (need) to use boost libs as dll with a static run-time library. In this case auto_link.hpp gives me an error "Mixing a dll boost library with a static runtime is a really bad idea...". Why is it a bad idea? I don't think that it's a good idea but requirements in our project demand static-runtime linkage for all modules and they don't want to use regex as static library cause of it's size. What problems could it cause? I know only one problem with a memory allocation in different modules. Any more? Thanks, Vladimir

Seekg on a gzip'd file...Is this possible?

Hello all, I¹m switching one of my projects over from java to c++. Basically it¹s a gzip file reader, where I¹d like to parse a bunch of numbers (floats, ints, doubles) and in some instances I¹d like to skip some of the data. I¹m a ³noob² to boost and after getting the file reader working using the boost like this: { .... std::ifstream ormodelFile(filenameForTimeStep.c_str(), std::ios_base::in|std::ios_base::binary); boost::iostreams::filtering_istreambuf compressedFileFilter; compressedFileFilter.push(boost::iostreams::gzip_decompressor()); compressedFileFilter.push(ormodelFile); this->inputFile.rdbuf(&compressedFileFilter); //where inputFile is a an istream. ... //do the file reading } I tried to add the skipping parts to the code by simply calling: { ... double value; this->inputFile->seekg(sizeof(double),ios::cur); ... } the fail bit is set on the inputFile istream. Is it possible to do this using boost? I¹m pretty ³green² with boost so I¹m sure it¹s just my misunderstanding of how to use the lib but I couldn¹t find my way around the docs to well. The best I could find was that I need to somehow make my stream ³seekable² but it wasn¹t too clear to me how to do this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Gerrick

shared_ptr's constructor in line 168 calls 'boost::detail::sp_enable_shared_from_this( pn, p, p );'. 'boost::shared_ptr<IDerived> c(new Derived());' is dispatched to 'sp_enable_shared_from_this' in line 86. pay attension to the second parameter, it can accept all types that inherit 'enable_shared_from_this<T>', so does 'Derived*'. While, 'boost::shared_ptr<IDerived> c((IDerived*)new Derived());' is dispatched to 'sp_enable_shared_from_this' in line 111, bacause the static type IDerived* has nothing to do with 'enable_shared_from_this<T>' and can not be implicitly converted to 'enable_shared_from_this<T>'. Then check out the difference between the two 'sp_enable_shared_from_this'. It is obvious that the second usage shall cause a BOOST_ASSERT failed in 'enable_shared_from_this::shared_from_this', so an exception is raised. However, I think the root reason is not the language nor boost, but the design of class IDerived. using boost :: thread in Linux

HI, I am using boost::thread for my project. I have extracted only boost::thread through BCP and I have build my multithreading application. It is working properly in my local machine (Windows)now I have to port it over to linux box. I had couple of questions ...?? Is it ok to copy the boost::thread folder (That I have extracted) from my local machine to linux box and run my application?? or is it that I have to install the entire boost library in linux box and then by using bcp I have to extract only boost:thread part which I can use for my application?? Please let me know what can be the possible solution.If there is any other solution please feel free to advice. Thanks In Advance Ayan.

Hi! I'm trying to write simple pipe redirector. Pipe have to be readed in message mode (it's awesome, i know, but i can't change this). So i should read all message content into buffer and then in one write send it to the service host. I'm using stream_handle::async_read_some to read message. When buffer bigger, then message, all ok - message readed and my handler called. Otherwise access violation (Unhandled exception at 0xfeeefeee). Call stack (buffer size 16 bytes): * feeefeee() * boost::asio::detail::win_iocp_io_service::operation::do_completion(unsigned long last_error=0x000000ea, unsigned int bytes_transferred=0x00000010) Line 77 + 0x16 bytes C++ * boost::asio::detail::win_iocp_io_service::do_one(bool block=true, boost::system::error_code & ec={...}) Line 509 C++ * boost::asio::detail::win_iocp_io_service::run(boost::system::error_code & ec={...}) Line 186 + 0xe bytes C++ * boost::asio::io_service::run() Line 58 + 0xf bytes C++ As you can see, transferred byte count exactly 16, and error code EA (MORE_DATA_AVAIL). It seems that something wrong with syncronization, but i have only one thread with io_service::run. boost::fusion zip_iterator and generic make_tuple call

Hi, I'm cross-posting here after a kind invitation from Joel. I hope I can tap into your expert wisom! :-) I have a fusion sequence of std::vectors which can be specified variably by users: typedef boost::fusion::vector<std::vector, std::vector, ...> Inputs; Using boost::zip_iterator, I would like to parallel iterate each std::vector of the sequence and call a user function, but I am not sure how to proceed. Of course I would like to do this in a generic manner so that the user can change the number of inputs (std::vectors) at will. I want to develop a way of checking if I can implement a trivial string converter through lexical_cast. If that converter doesn't exist then the developer is required to make one and a different converter is made that throws an exception if called (may not be the best way but for now that's what I'm working with). To be lexical castable T must be OutputStreamable, InputStreamable, CopyConstructable, and DefaultConstructable. I think I can implement checks for streamable through the sizeof trick...haven't thought of the exact way yet but I think it should work. I can't think of how to test for CopyConstructable or DefaultConstructable though. Any ideas?

[Multi-Index] crash on iterator copy or assignment

Hi, I've been using B.MI for a few days, and until now it's worked great for me. I've included below in Exhibit A a simplified (and a bit obfuscated, sorry) version of what I've been using (a proxy, indexed by name and type, and a method returning all instances of a given type). Filling in a list of all entries matching a given type (in exhibit A) works great. But now I was trying to return a custom (non-standard) iterator, where the client gets a pointer to a abstract base iterator (allows to hide the B.MI stuff in the concrete derived iterator), wrapped in an auto_ptr. The private concrete iterator internally stores the B.MI iterator from the index I'm interested in (exhibit B). This compiles (vs2005 sp1 on winXP 32), but it crashes at runtime on the call to boost::tie, during iterator assignment apparently. (call stack in exhibit C). So at this point I have no clue what's going on, and I would appreciate some help. The level of template complexity is more than stretching my abilities I'm afraid, just reading the type names makes my end spin ;) We're going to try it using GCC on Linux to see if it might be a compiler issue, and possibly try vs2008 as well, but if anyone knows if taking copies of the iterators is allowed (I know the index themselves shouldn't be copied, and we don't), and if yes why it's failing in this particular case, I'd appreciate. Thanks, --DD PS: Earlier I had a version of ByTypeFooIterator that took the begin/end iterator as param to its Ctor, taking a *copy*, but that also crashed w/o a stack trace this time. Hi All, While compiling the signals library (Boost v1.38) to a platform with exception support disabled (ARM RVDS v3.0Sp1 [EDG]) I've encountered build errors in the function libraries due to usage of try/catch keywords. tokenizer problem

Hi All! I'm having a problem passing strings into a boost tokenizer. I have been able to get the code to work but I don't think I should have had to do what I did. I don't know if it is tokenizer problem or a compiler problem or my problem. Basically, I start with a char[] and depending on how I convert it to an std::string, I may or may not get garbage tokens. I've attached a complete, but small, program to demonstrate the problem. I hope someone can tell what is going on. I'm using a Fedora 8 system with g++ v 4.1.2. Thanks in advance! A problem while building 1.38.0 for msvc

I downloaded the 1.38 build zip file and unzipped it. I then downloaded the latest bjam and unzipped that. I then used bjam to build boost, as follows: bjam --build-dir=c:\users\myuser\boost-build --toolset=msvc stage It all built successfully, but when I referenced libboost-thread-vc90-mt-gd-1_38_0.lib, I got a linker error where it is looking for libboost-regex-vc80-mt-gd-1_38_0.lib. The problem is that it is requiring the vc80 lib, but bjam only built vc90 libraries. When I renamed the 90 regex library to say 80, I got a host of unresolved externals when linking. (I didn't really expect that to work, but I tried anyway). Can someone advise what I should do to fix this problem? boost asio: Probelm with closing a blocking ip::udp::socket receive

Hi, I'm using boost 1.35 on Linux. I have a thread which initiates a ip::udp::socket and has a blocking receive. When I try to terminate this thread from a different thread, in order to close the udp::socket I use the following: // m_socket is of type ip::udp::socket boost::system::error_code ec; m_socket::shutdown(boost::asio::ip::udp::socket::shutdown_receive, ec); std::cout << "error code = " << ec << std::endl; m_socket.close(); After shutdown I ALWAYS get system:107 error code - which means "Transport endpoint is not connected". Does anybody have any idea why I'm receiving such an error? Needless to say, the receive is working great - and I get the packets from the port I'm listening to. Thanks!

Testing algorithms don't use more than a concept provides

I'm trying to verify an algorithm doesn't use more than a certain concept provides. For example, if the algorithm checks for an ForwardIterator it must not use the i-- operator. I'm currently testing this by creating a minimal abstract class for each concept and then testing if the algorithm compiles using only the minimal as input. I have a few issues with this approach. 1. I have to maintain two definitions, one concept and one minimal implementation. 2. I have to write minimal implementations for all the boost/stl containers/concepts I want to use. I guess someone must have had the same problem before, is there a better way to do this? Maybe even some existing boost functionality I am unaware of? I'm having a problem with the preprocessor and currently I'm stuck. I tried to reduce the problem from my program as far as possible. The preprocessed file (g++ -P -E) has expands to 0; but the preprocessor still throws an error. [multi-index] runtime indices

Hi all, I have been using multi-index with great success, but have struck a requirement that sort of fits into the remit of multi-index, but isn't catered for. Here's what I want to do (pseudocode) typedef multi_index<MyClass> MyIndex; MyIndex mi; int index_id = 0; mi.add_sorted_index( index_id++, MyIndex::sorted_index_predicate_type( &some_predicate ) ); mi.add_sorted_index( index_id++, MyIndex::sorted_index_predicate_type( &some_other_predicate ) ); So basically, add indices at runtime, to take advantage of multi_index's great features, such as projection, index updating on modification, etc. My use case, if it's relevant, is to expose multi_index behaviour on objects from a dll. Where obviously the calling module can't specify at compile time the required indices. Is this a sensible addition to multi-index, or is it best implement using other mechanisms. (Having to re-implement many of the great features of multi-index doesn't seem desireable.) Neil

Dear all, I'm trying to use boost::bind in combination with boost/functional/factory.hpp (and value_factory) this works fine, boost::bind( boost::factory<T*>(), arg1, _1 ) with arg1 not being an lvalue (e.g., 2.0). however, with nested binds it is not accepted, boost::bind( boost::factory<T*>(), boost::bind( f, _1 ), _2 ) the compiler complains that it needs an lvalue for the nested bind. opinions about a clean c++ ".net style" property system

I have been strugling the past weeks designing a system to add ".net style" properties to my library. After some experiments like wrapping the class members inside member<type> m_member stuff I realized that I was wrong about what exactly a property is. So I rewrote everything again with the following idea in mind: A property is nothing more that a pack of some accessor functions and maybe some data. My objective was to support properties while keeping the class size the same and without any speed impact or weird requeriment in the get/set functions. The code is working right now but I think it can be more compact for the user, but unfortunately my c++ skills are insuficient to polish some things. C++03 unique_ptr emulation

I've put up a new version of an C++03 emulated unique_ptr here: http://home.roadrunner.com/~hinnant/unique_ptr03.html This is a "boost-ized" emulation (uses boost tools and is in boost namespace), though I have reason to believe it may not work well on VC+ +05 unless the /Za option is used (I've tested only on gcc 4.0). I'm aware of Ion's interprocess version (http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_35_0/doc/html/interprocess/interprocess_sma… ), and thank Ion for his support over the years. This new version is not meant to replace Ion's version. It is simply my current best shot at emulating the unique_ptr behavior as specified in the C++0X CD1 draft. Booster's are welcome to take parts of this implementation and use them in places like interprocess/unique_ptr. Or to just use this unique_ptr directly. It consists of only one header: unique_ptr.hpp, and requires only boost headers, not boost cpp files. Basic documentation is included at the link. -Howard

Compiling probs with Filesystem in 1.38.0

I successfully used Boost 1.33.1 with VS 2005. Now I have the task of upgrading our software to VS 2008 ASAP and in so doing, I upgraded our Boost to 1.38.0. Apparently, Boost's Filesystem got revamped in 1.34.0 and the contents of exception.hpp got moved to path.hpp and into Interprocess (!) library's errors.hpp. We cannot call the error() routine anymore as it's no longer a member of filesystem_error. And do I replace 'boost::filesystem::path_error' with 'boost::interprocess::path_error'? What do I need to do in order to recompile in Boost 1.38.0 and still have the same functionality? Dear boosters, As a programmer under Unix-like systems, I really appreciate when a library (say `mylib') provides some `mylib-config' script that helps its users to build compiler flags. Several industrial strength libraries have such a tool: GSL, MySQL and, in the field of particle physics software I work: CLHEP, ROOT, CERNLIB... Here is an example for the GSL (GNU Scientific Library): >>> $ gsl-config Usage: gsl-config [OPTION] Known values for OPTION are: --prefix show GSL installation prefix --libs print library linking information, with cblas --libs-without-cblas print library linking information, without cblas --cflags print pre-processor and compiler flags --help display this help and exit --version output version information An external CBLAS library can be specified using the GSL_CBLAS_LIB environment variable. The GSL CBLAS library is used by default. <<< I makes really easy to write rather portable makefiles using things like: CPPFLAGS+=$(shell gsl-config --cflags) LDFLAGS+=$(shell gsl-config --libs) Up to now and AFAIK it seems Boost does not provide such script that could be generated at build stage for any Unix-like system. Of course, I wrote my own script for my own usage (and for people who work with me). But at the end, I think it would be better to use an `official' tool. For my experience, it is also a strong argument to convince newbies to use Boost on top of standard C++, because it comes in some rather transparent way. [Interprocess] Deadlock when using interprocess_semaphore

We are seeing a deadlock when making use of the interprocess_semaphore. In our case we have two running threads where the first thread is stuck waiting at a timed_wait() call while the second thread is stuck at a post() call. Also, a symptom we are seeing is that the lock value is set to 1 before both threads try to acquire the lock -- we think this is why the threads get stuck in the lock calls. We are running 1.36 at the moment. Have there been any fixes in 1.37 or 1.38 that might help us to avoid this problem? Since my read and write access are sequential, I would like the mapping to happen on demand (based on access violation trying to read an unmapped region of memory). Hi all, The documentation for the normal distribution (http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_38_0/libs/random/random-distributions.html#…) states: "Members explicit normal_distribution(const result_type& mean = 0, const result_type& sigma = 1); Requires: sigma > 0" In the actual code of this constructor (http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_38_0/boost/random/normal_distribution.hpp) it can be seen "assert(_sigma >= result_type(0));". That is, acepts sigma == 0. Indeed, there's no "division-by-zero" or so, because the method that is used ("Box-Muller") doesn't actually divide by sigma: return _cached_rho * (_valid ? cos(result_type(2)*pi*_r1) : sin(result_type(2)*pi*_r1)) * _sigma + _mean; So, in this case, the numbers will be all equal to _mean. From the mathematical point of view there's no such thing as a normal distribution with sigma equal to zero; but, computationally, may be handy to allow that. What's the expected behavior? After reading the referece docs I got the impression that the only difference between io_service::post and deadline_timer::async_wait is the fact that the former triggers execution immediately (after the caller function returns?) while the latter waits until timer expires before execution of the function object. Is this really the only difference or is there any other issue to be considered? Markus

Hi, I'd like to implement a cross-process singleton which resides in a shared memory segment. MPL design question

I have a class that is getting a huge number of template parameters (mostly a bunch of size_t used for vector sizes). They have a natural organization into groups, but almost all of them have a default as 0. How do you suggest that I design the template parameter for this? Is there any way to use some kind of associative container so I could look these up by "name" and default to 0 if they aren't there? I can't see how to use mpl::map to do this kind of stuff. Simplified Pseudocode: -------------------- What I have: template<std::size_t IndividualSize = 0, std::size_t AggregateSize> //Many others class my_problem{...}; What I want: template<class StateSizes> class MyProblem{...} Called something like: typedef my_problem<map<AggregateSize, 2> > my_problem_type; where AggregateSize is an enum, placeholder struct, etc. And in this case I would default IndividualSize to 0. -Jesse

boost/math/special_functions/legendre.hpp causing compile errors in other headers

I recently started using the Boost Math libraries because I need legendre polynomials. However I cam across a problem I was hoping someone on this list could help me with. My personal code compiles fine with no problems. When I add the line #include "boost/math/special_functions/legendre.hpp" then I get compiler errors attributed to one of my header files. Specifically I get: my_header.hh:109 error: ISO C++ forbids declaration of ‘tuple’ with no type As I mentioned before, I don't believe the problem is in my header file because it compiles just fine without the legendre.hpp file. Has anyone seen this problem before? Do you know how to fix it? I am running gcc 4.2.1 on Mac OS X 10.5.6. Thanks, Jeremy

Hi there, I have a program ("A") that calls other, external programs ("B"). A can get a number of command line options, which are parsed with the help of the program_options library. B may also accept options (which are possibly defined by other people and not known to me in advance). Thus I want to pass all those options that are not known to A on to B, in the hope that they are needed for that program. Is there a way to retrieve the remaining argv string, with all options "known" to A removed ? Or should I better invent a flag of the following kind for A --external-options="-a 1 -b 2 -c 3" whose value is passed on to the external program ? Thanks and Best Regards, Ruediger

In an application we would like to support synchronous operations in the application layer, whereas operations below it are done with asynchronous operations. Callback handlers are not appropriate in this case, To make the example more clear, suppose you have a remote_vector which you would like to iterate through, remote_vector a(10); for( int i=0; i<10; ++i ) { std::cout << a[i] << std::endl; } here, a[i] will cause messages to be sent to retrieve the actual vector data before printing it. The network layer is hidden from the user. What is the best way to "emulate" synchronous behaviour with asio? Hello Sohail actually test is never ment to return (check the for(;;) ;) - so this should not do any harm on the running program. This is definitely not a good coding style, but IMO acceptable for that simple non-productive example ;)

Static linking/GCC 4.3.2 on Linux (-fPIC missing?)

Hi, I've been using Boost 1.37 so far on Linux, and linked some libraries statically into a shared library. That is, I have a .so (Foo.so), which statically links in Boost.Filesystem (among others). Yesterday I tried to compile Boost 1.38 for Linux, everything worked fine, but as soon as it got to linking my .so, GCC stops as Boost.Filesystem has not been compiled with -fPIC. I don't remember I had to set -fPIC on 1.37 though. Setting cxxflags=-fPIC obviously solves the problem (along with a recompile of Boost), so my question is: Is this a regression? Did I miss something? The environment is Linux with GCC 4.3.2, on x64. Cheers, Anteru

Hi, I have something like the following object hierarchy: class Root {}; class A : Root {}; // BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT in header file class B : Root {}; // BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT in header file class U : A {}; // BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT in header file class V : A {}; // BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT in header file class X : B {}; // BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT in header file class Y : B {}; // BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT in header file There are a lot of shared pointers to the base classes Root, A and B which are to serialize.Boost 1.37 works fine while Boost 1.38 brings "redefinition of ‘struct boost::archive::detail::init_guid<A>" "redefinition of ‘struct boost::archive::detail::init_guid<B>" "redefinition of ‘struct boost::archive::detail::init_guid<U>" "redefinition of ‘struct boost::archive::detail::init_guid<V>" "redefinition of ‘struct boost::archive::detail::init_guid<X>" "redefinition of ‘struct boost::archive::detail::init_guid<Y>" after trying to link. It seems clear I have to put the BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT stuff in the belonging implementation files. But this corrupts the input of files which were created with the former binaries using the BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT in the header. I need an advice how and where the macro to place in terms of a long time decision. Below the class definition (which I find a good solution) seems no longer to work. Thank you very much, Jan.

Anyway, I'll try to get gdb running and debug the problem. Nontheless there is another problem(?) in wave. Wave still uses the old filesystem interface, which makes it incompatible with code compiled with BOOST_FILESYSTEM_NO_DEPRECATED. That is a bug, right? Thank you

Pointer serialization and deserialization

Hi all, Boost:1.38.0 compiler:gcc4.1.1 I am trying to serialize and deserialize a pointer to the class, but ended with the segmentation fault, Is that the null pointer serialization gives the segmentation fault?. I read in document that, library will maintain the Null pointer. if not how can i serialize? ,any docs or related refference is a;so acceptable. Thanks in advance.... one more thing: what -1 in archive(text_archive) indicates? [asio] communication with a remote apache tomcat service

Hello all: I'm working on a client program which needs to communicate with a remote server using an http based protocol ,which running a service (java servlet under apache tomcat). I developed it using the example in http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_38_0/doc/html/boost_asio/example/http/clien… as reference. When testing on a local server with apache tomcat deploying the service, (http://localhost:8084) it worked fine, since I established the communication with the server with these statements: tcp::resolver resolver(io_service); tcp::resolver::query query("127.0.0.1", 8084); tcp::resolver::iterator endpoint_iterator = resolver.resolve (query); It worked all right with that connection string, but when we deployed the service in a commercial remote server with apache tomcat preinstalled, the connection string has becomed something like this: "http://urltomyserver:8080/ServiceName" The problem here seems to be that I only can use tcp::resolver::query when I have an specific ip or url, and a connection port both separated but, apparently, now I need to specify the port within in the connection string. I couldn't make this work, and tcp::resolver::iterator endpoint_iterator = resolver.resolve(query) always either can't resolve the query or it gets timeout. Is there anyway I could use a connection string with the port specified within, like "http://urltomyserver:8080/ServiceName" and make it work with tcp::resolver::query? Do I need to find an alternative? The second option would be very expensive in developing time terms, so I'm hoping you could help me to make this work. Thanks a lot :) José Manuel Pulido

Hello, The error appears also in 1.38.0 unless I change the test_unit destructor to virtual. There is no need for Valgrind to popup the error: a simple gdb execution (MINGW widh gcc4.3.3) will show the error when the test application terminates. [asio] reopening of serial port fails - why?

Hi! The code below perfectly reads characters from the serial line for 6 seconds. The termination of the thread and a reopening of the connection then fails. What am i missing here? [Unordered] template find() request

Hello Boost, Suppose I have a boost::unordered_set<std::string>. Now I want to find() a const char *, std::string, or even a string without zero termination (Google StringPiece). Converting these to std::string just to do a lookup is wasteful. Instead, I want to provide functors like: struct either_hash { size_t operator()(const std::string &str) const { return boost::hash_range(str.begin(), str.end()); } size_t operator()(const char *str) const { return boost::hash_range(str, str + std::strlen(str)); } }; This raises the question: what is either_hash::argument_type ? But it seems this is not used by boost::unordered_set . It should probably be std::string to match the underlying hash table. Would it make sense to change find() to template <class query_type> const_iterator find(const query_type& q) const ? For those familiar with Google StringPiece, one solution is using boost::unordered_set<StringPiece>, but then I have to keep the underlying strings somewhere outside the table. Further, a generalized find is useful in other cases, but this was the easiest to explain. Kenneth

Using program_options from a string?

Hello all. I am using the boost::program_options library for configuration files with great success. I'm wondering if it's possible to use the library using a string as a source, instead of a config file. I read the configuration file with code like this: if (vm.count("config")) { string f = vm["config"].as<string>() ; ifstream ifs(f.c_str()); store(parse_config_file(ifs, config_file_options), vm); po::notify(vm); } but what I'd also like to do is something along these lines, with a string as the original source instead of a file specified with my 'config' command line option: string str = "port = 3000 \n tmpdir = /tmp \n"; // something like this. this is what's in the config file. istringstream iss(str, istringstream::in); store(parse_config_file(iss, config_file_options), vm); po::notify(vm); These lines compile and execute without error but don't actually appear to update the 'vm'. Hello, I have a question. I need a lexical_cast for a BYTE. Now I get allways a compile error with VS2005 and VS2008: e.g. unsigned char test = 2; test = boost::lexical_cast<unsigned char>(L"2"); Error 2 error C2679: binary '>>' : no operator found which takes a right-hand operand of type 'unsigned char' (or there is no acceptable conversion) D:\boost\boost_1_38_0\boost\lexical_cast.hpp 771 What I do wrong? [serialization] nans and infinite floats in text based archives...

Hi serializers, archivers, boosters and Robert, I've used boost:serialization (boost 1.34.1 under Linux ubuntu and/or SL4,, gcc 4.2) for one year. Thanks to this excellent library, our team store critical experimental data (3 TB using zipped text archives). Up to now, I met no problem with text/XML archives as all the stored double values pass the 'isnormal' check. Now my new data analysis programs needs to (de)serialize doubles even if they are NaNs or infinites (for it makes sense for me). Unfortunately, the load method for double fails while reading 'nan' (or 'inf') from the input for this is the standard behavior of the ostream with "! isnormal" doubles. After studying the source code for boost text oriented I/O archives in the hope to find a fix for my problem, I made an attempt to make boost aware of nans and +/-infs in a pragmatic way (I mean trying to save time and storage but keep the information and get rid of the stream error exception). I attached a tiny tarball to show the hack I've done. I'm not sure at all this is be a definitively good and elegant approach to handle nans within text based archives. So I'd appreciate to get some feedback and comments from Robert or any expert in this field.
