Hello, Is it possible somehow to make a binder that stores "unexpected" argument? Motivation: I have to create & pass a callback handler from within intusively ref-counted object (MS-ATL) to an outer asynchronous subsystem. If the object were shared-ptr enabled, I'd do this as usually: ThisObj::handler() { //... } ThisObj::doSomething() { asyncSubsystem_->doSomething(&ThisObj::handler, shared_from_this()); } However, in my case I have to do something like this: asyncSubsystem_->doSomething(&ThisObj::handler, this, mySmartPtr); // store someOtherSmartPtr in the functor, just to ensure "this" won't die before the handler is invoked Is it possible with bind, lambda or some other library? But on the other hand, when I'm dealing with a Vehicle (corrected spelling ;) instead of an Object, I'd like to get it's ident with the proper type (VehicleIdent), to access the vehicule-specific identity naturally (those methods are not shown here). So I used covariant return type, which AFAIK works only for raw pointers. Volodya, thanks for the help thus far, I think I am close to getting it to work. According to the post you referred me to, multiple of the same parameter are not collapsed, ie --list a.txt b.txt --list c.txt d.txt Should give me access to the two separate lists. I tried declaring the parameter as usual: ("list", po::value<vector<string> >()->multitoken(), "Lists.") And then I thought it may be the .count property? cout << "There are " << vm.count("list") << " lists." << endl; But there is only 1 list. The idea was to do this: vector<vector<string> > lists; for(unsigned int list = 0; list < vm.count("list"); list++) { vector<string> l = vm["list"].as<vector<string> >(); lists.push_back(l); for(unsigned int item = 0; item < lists[list].size(); item++) cout << "List: " << list << " Item: " << item << " " << lists[list][item] << endl; } Clearly I am still missing the part about accessing the separated "list" params. It seems my debug build is exteremely slow in the parts that call boost graph library functions. Is there a way I can force the boost lib files to compile with optimizations even though the rest of my app is in debug?? Cheers -John Krajewski

Hello boosters: When I build boost_1_38, I use 'configure -prefix=/usr' command to put boost files in /usr/ directory. I compile Lintel a paser for cello99, a error occurs: the information is as follows: /usr/include/boost-1_38/boost/thread/tss.hpp:82: undefined reference to 'boost::detail::get_tss_data(void const*)' Is it a bug for boost or some other causes? [coroutine] Bus error on Mac OS X 10.5

I've downloaded the not-yet-Boost coroutine library [1] from the Boost Vault [2]. On a couple of Linux platforms I was able to build and run example/banana.cpp -- though I had to patch noreturn.hpp for gcc 3.3 [3]. On an Intel "fall 2008" MacBook Pro running OS X 10.5.6, with Apple gcc 4.0.1, I had to comment out the MAP_ANONYMOUS mmap() flag [4] -- I don't think that flag is available in Darwin. (Obviously that patch should test for MAP_ANONYMOUS rather than simply suppressing it.) Having done that, the 'banana' example program built -- but I get a bus error trying to run it. I did find an exchange on the Apple mailing list [5] in which Kevin Van Vechten recommends #defining _XOPEN_SOURCE before #include <ucontext.h>: >> Why the bus error? Strange issue with boost::date_time

I'm having a strange issue with the boost::date_time library - My program runs fine with both release and debug compilations, but will not run in standalone / the command line. I.e., the program works when I run it through the MS visual studio debugger, whether the program is built with debugging symbols or not. It also ran correctly when run through dependency walker. It does not run when run without either of those, i.e. on a command line. Through print statements I determined that it is running through the initialization and crashes(windows brings up the crashed executable dialog, "This.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close.") The exact code it crashes on is the allocation of a class that contains time_durations: class TempClass { public: list<time_duration> TDList; time_duration SomeOtherDuration; }; and then crashes when allocating this object: TempClass* pTempClass; pTempClass = new TempClass; // <--- Crashes when run without debugger. The program crashes on the new. I tried putting a try/catch block around it for any exception to see if any were being hit and none are. I had tried to reproduce this issue in a much simpler program, but have not had any luck thus far - the test program always runs correctly. Any ideas or things to try? This is not the first instantiation of a time_duration(pushed into a vector a few lines before this), but may be the first instantiation of a std::list. The pointer listed above is actually a member of another class that is contained in a vector, if that matters(shouldn't). Any help? If not I can try again at creating a simpler program that exhibits the problem and paste it. Thanks, Jared

Windows linking problem

I got an error cannot open file 'libboost_program_options-vc80-mt-1_38.lib' The file is called 'boost_program_options-vc80-mt-1_38.lib' without the extra prefix. According to the documentation, that's as it should be. So, why is the autolink feature not getting the name right? There is a bug in TortoiseSVN 1.6.0 that can cause a log request to loop endlessly under certain conditions. When this happens an endless stream of requests is sent to the server. This may be why the svn.boost.org server is getting hammered, and response time is slow. It affects trac too, as it runs on the same server. The problem is fixed in release 1.6.1, so please upgrade to that release if you are currently running TortoiseSVN 1.6.0. Thanks, --Beman

Help with custom smart pointer const correctness

Given the class design below, and the ObjectPtr smart pointer implementation, I can't instantiate ObjectPtr<T> with T = const Car because a const Car returns a shared_ptr<const CarIdent> from the ident() methods, not a shared_ptr<CarIdent> as currently implemented (see compile error at the end of this post. VS2005). >From my very limited meta-programming experience, I'm guessing I need to fix the current typedef shared_ptr<ident_type> ident_ptr; in ObjectPtr to somehow use MPL to "return" shared_ptr<typename T::ident_type const> given a const T, and shared_ptr<typename T::ident_type> given a T, but I don't know how to do that yet. If someone would be kind enough to point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate. One way to tweak the reporting, is to extend the lifetime of the global object. Make sure to force a relinking / rebuild after setting this. Not sure if this helps for u.

Often this finds the problem within minutes, however I have experienced problems with assertions attaching to the JIT debugger. Hence you may still be in trouble since you state that the debugger must be detached for the problem to occur. My hope is that the fault does occur with a debugger attached, but there are no obvious symptoms and that increasing the CRT checking will bring the problem to the fore. I hope this helps. Hello. When I try to use sequence with different size I get assertion failure in std::vector class which tells: iterator is not dereferencable. It seems those dataflow iterators try to look for data after the input sequence end(). The problem is already discussed here: http://lists.boost.org/boost-users/2008/08/39790.php But, there is (above) no any valuable information about the problem. Is it bug or feature? How can I resove the problem? It is an abiltity to complete the input collection to make it multiple of 3 and on other side remove that dummy information added before. But, it is wanted that it would be more correctly resolved. Did anybody have any solution? Thank you.

Iteratro List corruputed Boost::regex in VS2008

Hi, I'm new with Boost libraries. I was able to run the Boost:: regex in VS2005. However, when I converted the same project into VS2008. It always prompt with "Iterator List Corrupted" error at Xutility.cpp, when it reach the declaration of Boost::regex, for elg boost::regex Str(CONST_STR). It is calling the function/declaration from a c++ API dll. Does anyone meet this kind of problem? Is it the settings of the VS2008 incorrect? Thank you.

How to obtain shared_ptr<Derived> from shared_ptr<Base>?

Object* object_; }; class Object { ... public: Ident* ident() { return ident_.get(); } const Ident* ident() const { return ident_.get(); } shared_ptr<Ident> ident_ptr() { return ident_; } protected: Object(shared_ptr<Ident> ident) : ident_(ident) { ident_->set_object(this); } virtual ~Object() { ident_->set_object(0); } private: shared_ptr<Ident> ident_; }; An Object in memory always has an Ident, which it shares with client code, but the Ident of an Object can be loaded before the object itself, and will also remain after the Object is gone, as long as client code references it. Ident has a "back" pointer to its Object, which is maintained by Object directly via friendship. (yes, the design is tightly coupled). In effect Ident is almost like a "weak" proxy to its Object. I worked around this issue so far by changing VehiculeIdent like so: class VehiculeIdent : public Ident, public enable_shared_from_this<VehiculeIdent> { ... shared_ptr<VehiculeIdent> as_shared_ptr() { return shared_from_this(); } }; at which point I can now write for example: bool VehiculeMgr::bind_vehicule(Vehicule* v) { return index_.insert(v->ident()->as_shared_ptr()).second; } But this solution seems unsatisfactory to me, because it forces the derivation and additional as_shared_ptr member in the public API of all Ident-deriving "root ident" classes, which I only need it inside VehiculeMgr (whose B.MI index is private). So long story short, is there a clean way to obtain a shared_ptr<VehiculeIdent> from a shared_ptr<Ident> which one "knows" is a VehiculeIdent, to avoid my as_shared_ptr hack above? Corrupted boost::regex::smatch results (on MSVS 2003)

All, I'm using Boost.Regex from v1.35.0. We're seeing the smatch matchresults object getting corrupted when being returned by value from a function. The smatch variable is good within the function (it is an object defined locally on the stack), but when returned it is corrupted with bad data. We're seeing this only in Visual Studio 2003, and no other platform. I'm still trying to figure out a workaround, but I do not have source access at the moment, to try and debug it that way. Just wondering if there are any known issues. A google search didn't return much by way of discussion of this sort of issue. Thanks --dw

Vladimir, it looks like only in the trunk, it didn't work with the distribution that came with Fedora 10. Also, when I compiled the trunk, I had to add using std::string; to boost/tools/wave/cpp.cpp for it to compile. Another question: When I link to boost_program_options-mt, cmake seems to truncate it to boost_program_options, so I had to add a symbolic link with that name. Does anyone else have that problem? [Multi-Index] Chained Ptr misunderstanding

I'm trying to use a shared_ptr as the value_type of a multi_index_container, but I'm not having any success with the key extractors (VS2005, 1.38). >From the doc, it seems that shared_ptr would be considered a Chained Pointer, and as such should work as-is, which by that I mean that I think I should be able to use the built-in key extractors whether value_type is a value or a shared_ptr. But I'm not having any luck. I found [1] which is very similar and which Joaquín answered, but I have other key extractors I want to use in different indexes, so I don't think using identity<> is applicable to my case in general, although it would be in this one. I'm trying to avoid having to write dumb custom key extractors for Foo, which would basically replicate what the built-in ones do in the first place. It's most likely an error an my part, but I can't spot it. Can someone please help? Hi there,I am writing an interpolator for multidimensional data that may be mixed integer and wanted some design advice. The user will know at compile-time what the number of integer and real dimensions is. The user will create a regular grid as the cartesian product of the various vectors of values for each dimension. mixed_grid<3, 2> my_mixed_grid; linear_interpolator<3, 2> f( my_mixed_grid); //3 real dimensions, 2 integer dimensions The problem with the interpolator is that it needs to be used in a variety of ways. Sometimes the user knows the exact number of the integer or real along a particular dimension. Other times they know the exact index in the grid for a dimension (I am using this for my dynamic programming library, so things get a little crazy when the code is generic, and speed is essential since the interpolator is executed in the innermost loop and would be the main bottleneck if done wrong). Ideal semantics: - Would love the ability to specify the type of interpolation for each variable. interpolated as the default, exact, and by index. Exact would tell the interpolator implementation to find the exact value and to skip a dimension in the interpolation. Byindex would tell it to do the same but even skip the lookup in the list for that dimension. - I want it to be relatively easy to call it with the default "interpolated" type. - Having parameters out of order is not necessary, but if the solution is to use boost::parameter or something like that, then I would say that we might as well allow it. Assuming that there is some sort of decoration class, I would love the semantics of the interpolator to allow something like this: linear_interpolator<3, 2> f( my_mixed_grid); cout << f(1.2, 3.4, 2.2, 1, 5); //normal. always ordered so integers at end. cout << f(1.2, exact(3.4), 2.2, 1, 5); //normal cout << f(1.2, exact(3.4), 2.2, 1, 5); //normal cout << f(1.2, exact(3.4), 2.2, byindex(0), 5); etc. It is reasonable to have the type for the non-interpolated defaults. e.g. cout << f(1.2, exact<real>(3.4), 2.2, byindex<int>(0), 5); Although having a class that wraps the creation could be fine if the decoration needs template parameters cout << f(1.2, get_exact(3.4), 2.2, get_by_index(0), 5); Any idea on how to implement this or if this is the right approach? Should I be using boost parameter somehow to make life easier and not have to implement a huge number of overloaded operator()? I can't figure out what the decoration classes would look like, and I can't have this using a virtual function to extract a value. And if boost::parameter is the solution: As gravy, it would be great if the user could positionally setup a bunch of boost parameter tags for their specific function (it is reasonable to expect them to put them in a namespace to avoid clashes). i.e. support f(_1 = 1.2, _3 = exact(2.2), _2 = 2.2, etc.); but also to define some kind of macro that can be used by any : FUNCTION_PARAMETER( _x, _1); //_x synonym for _1 used in the unpacking of the argpack FUNCTION_PARAMETER( _y, _2); //etc. so that they can call it like: f(_x = 1.2, _y = exact(2.2), etc.); I can't figure out in boost::parameter how I could have _x as a synonym for _1 which the interpolator implementation would use to unpack the argpack. Boost thread conflicts with MFC

I updated from 1.35 to 1.38 when the conflicts started. My MFC application wouldn't start, it would throw an exception. I pinned down the problem to the hook that boost thread library is using which is located in tss_pe.cpp: extern "C" { extern BOOL (WINAPI * const _pRawDllMain)(HANDLE, DWORD, LPVOID)=&dll_callback; } What I did is comment this declaration and rebuild the library and now my application seems to be running normally. My question is can boost thread library run properly without this hook? If not, what other solution do you suggest. Hi, I wonder if anyone can give me a hand with this problem here: I've got exported class: class_<MyInterface>( "MyInterface" ) ... And I've got class in Python: class ABC(object): ... I am doing some processing of the class definition in Python and want to be able to do the following (clazz here is ABC: clazz.__bases__ = (MyInterface,) + clazz.__bases__ I am getting following error: TypeError: __bases__ assignment: 'MyInterface' deallocator differs from 'object' I can add mixins defined in Python fine. Only mixins exported from C++ giving me a problem. Any advise? Gennadiy

Hi, I'm trying to use Boost.Test (dynamic variant) in a dll that also uses MFC. I'm using the console_test_runner application found in libs/test/tools to load my dll. My compiler is MSVC v8 and my OS is Windows Vista. Unfortunately, when the MFC dll gets unloaded prior to shutdown it invokes the CRT's memory leak detection routine which falsely reports that any memory allocated by the (yet to be unloaded) unit test framework has been leaked. Obviously, the problem here is with MFC and searching the 'net will yield numerous complaints on the topic. One such search turned up a promising workaround [1] that involves installing a custom report handler to "swallow" the extraneous memory leak reports. However it appears this approach is defeated by Boost.Test installing its own report handler when no debugger is present. Can anybody suggest a different workaround? The problem effectively renders Boost.Test unusable in this configuration when MFC is present. [Bind] creating a functio

I'm in the process of figuring out how to use the bind library. The section on operators seems to me missing the "," operator. I see || and && operators which would seem well suited to wrapping a few functions into one - but these would only work for functions returning a bool. How can/should one proceed to get the same functionality of && with function objects which return void? It looks to me that the "," operator should be in there. Robert Ramey

serialization singleton assert on iphone

Hi, I have an assert when exiting my application using the serialization lib of boost 1.38. BOOST_DLLEXPORT static T & get_instance() { static detail::singleton_wrapper<T> t; // refer to instance, causing it to be instantiated (and // initialized at startup on working compilers) assert(! detail::singleton_wrapper<T>::m_is_destroyed); use(instance); return static_cast<T &>(t); } The same code doesn't assert on windows XP so I guess that's something messy with static allocation on the iphone platform. On the iphone, the load/save code works well as long as it's not called when the application exit. As far I as I understand, I need to move my exit code somewhere else, when those singleton are still allocated. Can somebody confirm that? Or maybe I'm missing something... Reading key-value pairs from a string

Dear boost-users, I am currently working on a C++ project that includes reading and parsing some files. Given a string with certain file contents S, I would like to attempt to compare it against a certain pattern. In particular, the contents have the form key : value. Certain keys are obligatory, while others may or may not exist (my program then supplies the default values). Can you recommend me a boost facility that can help me reading this type of data? My problem is that between key, : and value there could be blank spaces, tabs etc. The type of value could be a string, an int, or double. Thanks in advance!

[program_options] Obtaining parameter order

Hi everyone, I'm writing a program that needs to know the order that parameters are supplied in, but I can't find anything in the docs about this. For example, a program to work with .zip files might work like this: zip --rename=one.bin:alpha.bin --add=one.bin --rename=one.bin:beta.bin The initial --rename would need to be acted upon first, before --add (otherwise one.bin would get overwritten) and likewise the last --rename must be acted upon after --add, otherwise the wrong file (or no file) would be renamed. If I use normal string vectors the order of the parameters will be lost so this won't work. Is this sort of parsing possible with program_options, or will I need to resort to writing my own command-line parsing code? Thanks, Adam.

Hello boost-users . I have build boost_1_38_0 with bjam on RedHat Entriprise 5.The bjam command is"bjam �toolset=gcc �build-type=complete install" When I compile cello99 trace DateSeries(A application based on boost), a error occur "boost/foreach.hpp: No such file or directory". I notice that in the directory "/usr/local/include/boost-1_38/boost" there exists the file "foreach.hpp". But in the directory"/usr/include/boost" do not have foreach.hpp file. Hi I scanned through the boost-users list and it seems that there was a proposed Fixed-point decimal libary in the past(around 2003) which was rejected. I was wondering if there is a related library that was accepted in boost, that allows us to do fixed point arithmetic in a portable, reliable way: My first attempt was to scan through the Boost.math libary but have not found my way through the documentation. [boost.python] ImportError: DLL Load failed.

Hello. I compiled a python module with msvc for python2.6 under windows xp. Under linux everything's ok, but under windows xp, I don't know what happens, I get an ImportError: DLL Load failed. I set sys.path to the directory containing the module, but no luck until now. Is it a problem with boost.python. I don't know what to think. Thanks for your help.

Hi, I'm a happy user of boost::extension library. Thanks Jeremy Pack et al. for this great work, and hope it'll be accepted by Boost soon. My extension library is dowloaded from http://boost-extension.blogspot.com/ (August 14, 2008 Link), which works great for me when compiled with "-O0" optimization flag in g++ (my version: i686-apple-darwin9-g++-4.0.1). But, when I compile with -O2 and access type_map object through member template function, g++ seems to optimize away the initialization logic for 'type_map', and I'd get signal assertion of EXC_BAD_ACCESS. smaller / decoupled `filesystem' module?

I recently had a need to fix some code which got a list of files in a directory, and needed to work across Linux / OS X 10.4+ / Windows. I was thinking of unifying it to use boost filesystem instead of some `#if not posix, do this, #else use opendir/readdir/etc. code.' So I turned to boost.filesystem. We're including boost piecemeal in our repo, and so I went to add it and adapt `filesystem' to our build system. Upon build, it seemed to require some additional boost headers, so I added them; goto 10. After a bit of this, I realized the new boost code was quite a bit larger than my entire ~5 meg repository up to that point: I'd needed to pull in MPL, for example, which is over > 6 meg. This is a minor part of the application we're writing, so I can't really justify the size. Has anybody out there written a `decoupled' filesystem, with less dependencies on other boost libraries? Even a trimmed down version would probably suit or needs for quite some time. Thanks, -tom

I'm trying to figure out how to configure XCode so that it will know which set of libraries to link against based on which OS target I choose in the IDE. [serialization] save/load split between 2 different classes

I've got a particular issue I cannot seem to find a solution to. I'm using boost.serialization to deserialize audio data into an object that wraps OpenAL. For example, the data I'm writing out would be (in order) a single INT representing the size of the raw data and then the data buffer after that. However, in my "Sound" object, I do not keep the data and length information as state in the class. Instead, I just keep the OpenAL buffer handle. In order for this class to be able to implement save(), it would need to have extra state, which would not be appropriate. Basically, I need to have a separate object dedicated to saving the sound data, and another for loading it. Is this possible? Perhaps there is a recommended design?

[ASIO] serial_port read seems to lost packets

Hi, I'm sure that is a my issue but I need your help.. In my project I have to talk with a modem. In answer to my AT command it responds: +CMGS: 0 OK +CMGS: 0,4,26 +CTSDSR: 40,123,0,456,0,152 231270F2204AAADC1234663E8DE77708FC5F3E where the +CTSDSR arrives some milliseconds after the last +CMGS. Hi All, #define BOOST_DISABLE_ASSERTS #include <boost/assert.hpp> #include <call.h> int main(){ call(); return 0; }; If, for testing purposes, I define call() as BOOST_ASSERT(false); with or without -O2 as a compiler option, there are no assert failed messages during execution, as desired. In my actual program, however, call depends on many headers. If I artificially add BOOST_ASSERT(false); in one of them, it is not ignored with -O2 i.e. I get Assertion failed: (false), function call. I use i686-apple-darwin9-gcc-4.0.1. Am I using BOOST_DISABLE_ASSERTS correctly? How do I go about fixing this problem?

[interprocess] synchronize startup

Researching boost user archives, I see this has been discussed before...but I'm not sure a clear answer was decided. What is the *recommended* way to have several processes synchronize their initialization, before using shared memory. Consider this example problem: 1) several writers to a boost.interprocess.message_queue will use "open_only" and need to wait until the queue is created (otherwise an exception will be thrown). 2) one reader of a boost.interprocess.message_queue will use "open_or_create" and then somehow signal other processes that the queue is now ready to be opened. The question is: what is the recommended way for the signal to be given to the other processes? Brent Arias

[Polynomial] Review Result

Apologies for the delay in putting this together... First off I'd like to thank the author for submitting this for review - I wish all our SOC students were similarly diligent! :-) We received a number of reviews of this library, but none were in favor of acceptance in its current form, and most thought that there was still a fair bit of work to do to get the library into shape. However, most thought that the library could be accepted into Boost given sufficient changes/enhancements. Therefore the library is not accepted into Boost at this time, but I would like to encourage the author to continue to work on the library and resubmit at a future time. In no particular order the main review comments are summarized below: Principal comments: * Documentation, especially the background is inadequate and needs a good proofreading a) From the examples are nothing that a competent programmer couldn't figure out from the declarations. Some more interesting or useful examples would be nice, particularly for things like the special forms. It's not exactly clear what I would do with those functions. b) There is no documentation or references to the various algorithms used. Those, too, would be nice. c) Doc.html appear to have been created 'the Hard Way'. Would be much more useful and look nicer if produced with the Quickbook, Doxygen... toolchain. And make it maintainable by other people. * Use of constructors and assignment operators that modify their arguments isn't acceptable - best to find another interface for this. * Several reviewers noted that the code didn't build for them, in particular log2 isn't available on all platforms/compilers. * evaluate_polynomial() and evaluate_polynomial_faithfully() take their coefficient arguments in the opposite order of all the other functions/constructors in the library, without providing any reason for that choice. That's seems somewhat surprising. I'd suggest fixing that, or at the very least providing an argument in the documentation why this makes some sense. * Rename evaluate() to horner() and provide evaluate() as an inline call to horner(). * Rename evaluate_faithfully() to compensated_horner(). * Things that say "Be careful about this" generally need fixing. * It would be nice to have operator* and operator/ as well as *= and /=. * Considering they share the same core algorithm, it might be nice to have a function that could do division and return the remainder at the same time. Something like poly::divide(P &divisor, P &quotient, P &remainer) * FFTs are good for multiplying polynomials above a certain size, but they are rather heavy for small polynomials and can lead to unexpected crosstalk between terms. There should be an option for * that doesn't use the FFT, and it should be the default for small polynomials. * operator/= has a hardcoded "std::vector<double> new_coefficients" that later gets rounded?? This should be fixed to work with any type that fulfills the necessary conceptual requirements (and tested and documented what those requirements are - it would be nice if they were the same as the rest of Boost.Math). * The name FieldType is mathematically misleading since the instantiating type is very likely not to be a field (e.g. int or a multiple precision integer type). * the Polynomial class provides a fairly minimalist set of supported functions. This may well be deliberate (if so, apologies), but I would like to see a richer interface including such things as - content (gcd of coefficients, where that makes sense) - polynomial discriminant - resultant of 2 polynomials - evaluation of homogeneous polynomial ( f(x) = sum c_i x^i,f(a,b) = sum c_i a^i b^(d-i) ) - evaluation at a polynomial (f(g(x))) - Pseudo-division of polynomials - finding roots over C - finding roots over F_p - factorisation over Z - factorisation over F_p * We had one feature request for extending support to finite fields. * This constructor: template<typename U> polynomial(const U& v); had me a little confused at first - is there any advantage to making this a template rather than simply accepting a const FieldType& as the single argument? * It's not clear from the documentation what this constructor does: polynomial(InputIterator first1, InputIterator last1, InputIterator first2); It needs to clearly state the degree of the resulting polynomial and whether it passes through all/any of the points - in fact maybe the constructor should have a final parameter for the degree of the polynomial and use least-squares fitting when required? Likewise for the member function template<typename InputIterator> void interpolate(InputIterator first1, InputIterator last1, InputIterator first2); * Operators: the / and % operators need good descriptions of what they do, given that no exact division is possible. As someone else has already noted, a function to calculate divide and remainder in one step would be useful too. * GCD: presumably this is restricted to polynomials with integer coefficients? If so it should say so. * Evaluation: The docs should say what method is used for the evaluate_faithfully method and give a reference. Renaming as someone else suggested may be better too, but personally I'm easy either way on that. I'm not sure whether there should be an evaluate_by_preconditioning method, shouldn't the polynomial "know" that it has been preconditioned and react accordingly. I haven't looked/checked but do the usual arithmetic operators still work if the polynomial has been preconditioned? I assume probably not, but if that's the case there should be a stern warning to that effect, *and* checks in code to prevent us from doing something stupid :-) BTW, preconditioning can be applied to polynomials of any degree I believe it's just that it gets hard to implement in the generic case. In addition I'd like to see the evaluation functions templated, so that the type being evaluated can differ from FieldType - it would surely be quite common for example to create and manipulate polynomials with integer coefficients, but then want to evaluate on a floating point type. There is machinery in Boost.Math BTW to handle the mixed argument-promotion and calculation of the result type, let me know if you need help in using this. * Special Forms: the functions provided do *not* generate polynomials in the alternative forms, but rather generate the named polynomial of order N, which is rather less useful, but at the very least the docs need updating to reflect this. * test_arithmetics.cpp fails on cygwin: or at least it did once I added a using std::pow; to start of operator*= to get things compiling. * None of the code builds with msvc: there are a couple of issues here: friend polynomial<FieldType> boost::math::tools::gcd<>(polynomial<FieldType> u, polynomial<FieldType> v); Needs to be changed to: friend polynomial<FieldType> boost::math::tools::gcd<FieldType>(polynomial<FieldType> u, polynomial<FieldType> v); to get msvc to Grok the code. After that there are a bunch of failures due to the use of log2 which msvc doesn't support (and since it's not part of the std other compilers are likely to complain too). * I haven't looked too hard at the implementation, except to echo the comments posted previously that the Conceptual requirements for FieldType need documenting and *testing*. There are concept checking classes and archetypes in Boost.Math which may be of use here. Again, shout if you need help in figuring out how to use these. I did notice that operator*= for example uses std::complex<double> internally which effectively limits the precision that can be achieved - to be useful to me - and to replace the existing "implementation detail" polynomial class in Boost.Math - I would need the polynomial class to be usable with arbitrary precision types such as NTL::RR or mpfr_class. Also as previously noted, multiplication of small polynomials may well be more efficient with the "naive" algorithm, so some performance tests and experimenting is required here. [lambda] Massive Windows warnings with containers of smart pointers

Hi all, I'm seeing massive C4181 warnings using boost lambda on containers of smart pointers under Windows VS2005 with Boost 1.36. The warnings do not happen under GCC, with all warning options at maximum. I can see from the archives that Noah Roberts posted this issue, as well as other lambda related problems, to the list back in 2006. I can't find an answer to the warning issue. Our development team has a policy of zero-warning tolerance. While it's clear that the code is working on all platforms, the warnings are troublesome. I'm hoping that there is a work around other than just suppressing the 4181 warnings. Sample code and the resulting warning follows below. Thank you in advance for any suggestions. Hello, I have a long chain of calls of functions where a template argument is passed from 1 function to the next. Different template arguments required slightly different arguments in the following signature: template< typename Interp> struct InterExtrap { static void Process( xbegin, xend, x, AdditionalArguments<Interp> ); // this calls static function inside Interp }; AdditionalArguments<Interp> is: . empty for a couple of Interp . size_t for a couple of others . double d0, double d1 for a couple of others. If all cases had exactly 1 argument which varied, I would have done above: typename AdditionalArguments<Interp>::type I could do struct S { double d1; double d2; }; I have in mind optimization issues as well as many of these intermediate functions are inlined. So I am concerned about process(xbegin, xend, x, const S& s) // then access s.d1 and s.d2 as I measured it is slower than process(xbegin, xend, x, double d1, double d2) Initial function (specifies Interp and therefore knows whether to pass empty, or size_t, or double double) calls a number of intermediate functions that are not interested in this detail, but still have the Interp template argument, and finally call static functions inside Interp which then know what they require as arguments. Is it possible to write the intermediate functions (member of template classes) in a generic way? Would SFINAE or the sizeof trick or any MPL Fusion facility allow this? Regards,

All, I am trying to accomplish a compile time type registry by trying to register a specific subset of my classes into an mpl sequence type. So during compilation that sequence type should hold a sequence of my classes for subsequent processing (e.g. by mpl::for_each). An example: --- code start -------------- class Super { tyedef mpl::list<> SubTypesList; // usage of SubTypesList: printSubtypes() { mpl::for_each< SubTypesList >( ... )}; }; class A : public RegisterWith< A, Super > {}; class B : public RegisterWith< B, Super > {}; --- code end -------------- now Super::SubTypesList should be equivalent to mpl::list< A, B >. I have the feeling that this approach is not achievable with templates alone due to the C++ template mechanism not being able to redefine a type. Still I would be happy being proven wrong. Hi *, I was desparately trying to compile something like this (VS2008), always getting the error that it cannot convert from int* to int*&. :boost::shared_ptr<int> c; ::boost::lambda::var(c) =::boost::lambda::constructor <::boost::shared_ptr<int>>() (::boost::lambda::new_ptr<int>()() ) [This is "short form" for the conventional code ::boost::shared_ptr<int>c=::boost::shared_ptr<int>(new int());] (1) The reason is that all lambda functors take arguments by reference. In this case, make_const in front of shared_ptr did not solve the problem, it causes immediate evaluation of the new_ptr functor... I've defined a class to use within shared memory, and I've decorated it with a Windows _declspec(export) to expose it from a DLL. When I compiled with VC 2008, I got this warning: Warning C4251: class 'boost::interprocess::vector<T,A>' needs to have dll-interface to be used by clients of 'MyClass' I searched boost user archives for any discussion of this, and in the context of boost.signals I've seen someone comment to simply disable the warning with: #pragma warning (disable: 4251) Std::list<OtherClass*> talkers; #pragma warning (default: 4151) Does this also apply to boost.interprocess? Is it really safe to ignore this warning and continue to use the interprocess code from within a DLL? Brent Arias

FWIW this doesn't have to be a windows only GUI. We could use the QT widget set and make this portable to most platforms supported by boost. Note, that Qt is LGPL now, so you could even include this into commercial distributions if needed. I'd like to have a user type that contains a vector and yet is still binary serializable, *AND* that can be used entirely inside or outside of shared memory. My idea is to give the vector a placement new allocator, it goes like this: class MyBinarySerialType { struct SomeItem { char first[10]; char second[10]; }; SomeItem m_Items[16]; //The placement new allocator points with an offset_ptr<SomeItem> //to the location &m_Items[0] boost::interprocess::vector<SomeItem, /*placement new allocator*/> m_vItems; public: MyBinarySerialType(const /*placement new allocator*/ &alloc); } I'd like to know if interprocess allocators can already do this for me (via template params, etc) or if I need to write my own allocator. If this is done correctly, I think it means I can "new" MyBinarySerialType from the regular heap and it will work entirely outside of shared memory. Likewise if I use segment.construct<MyBinarySerialType>()(...), then the whole thing should be created inside of shared memory. I just want to make sure that I understand the use of the Serialization library's EXPORT macros. On the "Serializable Concepts" page of the documentation, it states: -- The macro BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT_GUID associates a string literal with a class. ... This permits each class to be in a separate header file along with its string identifier. -- However, on the "Special Considerations" page, I find: -- Note that the implementation of this functionality requires that the BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT macro appear after and the inclusion of any archive class headers for which code is to be instantiated. ... Note that including BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT in the "a.hpp" header itself as one would do with other serialization traits will make it difficult or impossible to follow the rule above regarding inclusion of archive headers before BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT is invoked. This is different than other serialization traits which would normally be included in same file as the class declaration. -- The associated example shows the EXPORT macro following the #include of the header defining the class to be exported. I would certainly much rather have the EXPORT macros appear in the header with the class that defines them. I take it that means I have to guarantee that the file actually responsible for operating on an archive includes my headers with the class definitions and EXPORT macros *after* including the appropriate archive headers (e.g., "boost/archive/xml_oarchive.hpp"). I have a suggestion: Why not make a simple dialog window with several check buttons and few radio buttons where you will choose what kind of library you want to build(static/dynamic, release/debug), one edit line in which you enter the location where you want your libraries to be built, and one push button that will execute the build process? It would make the building process of the boost libraries 100 times easier.

Does calling named_mutex::remove() have consistent cross-platform behaviour? The reason I ask is that I am trying to use a named mutex for an "I'm the only process" check. That is, the process takes a shared lock on the named mutex (at start up), then, at points within the program, it attempts to get an exclusive lock in order to perform the check/actions. When finished, the mutex is returned to a shared lock. The problem is, if a process dies in some unforeseen manner - and does not get to call named_mutex::remove() - the named_mutex is left orphaned in the system (in a shared lock) such that other processes can never get an exclusive lock. On the Windows platform, I've found I can call named_mutex::remove() at start up, which seems to clean up the named_mutex if it is orphaned, or just do nothing if another, active, process has a lock - exactly the behaviour I require. However, is this platform independent, and a suitable technique?

Passing reference to boost::bind object

So, we are implementing boost::signals/slots, and in several cases, we have a connect() function to allow us to hook up an arbitrary slot to the signal, without exposing the details of the signal for cleanliness issues. We would like to implement the signals::trackable interface, and have the objects which are passing in the bound slot manage their connections in this manner. However, we are passing them as boost::function objects, which (as documented) does not work properly with boost::function objects, only boost::bind objects. In all of the documentation that I've found, about assigning the results of a boost::bind call were to function objects. Is there an alternative available to not destroy the trackable functionality that we're trying to use? Thanks --dw

help building boost for iphone

I'm fairly inexperienced with boost.build and I'm having an issue building boost for the iphone. My user-config.jam (I put this in the same dir as the bjam executable right?) looks like this: using darwin : 4.0.1~iphone : /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/usr/bin/arm-apple-darwin9-g++-4.0.1 -arch arm : <striper> : <architecture>arm <target-os>iphone <macosx-version>iphone-2.2 ; using darwin : 4.0.1~iphonesim : /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneSimulator.platform/Developer/usr/bin/g++ : <striper> : <architecture>x86 <target-os>iphone <macosx-version>iphonesim-2.2 ; and I'm invoking bjam like this: ./bjam debug release toolset=darwin --layout=system link=static architecture=arm target-os=iphone macosx-version=iphone-2.2 My error is that it can't find g++ becuase it isn't looking in the right place: g++-4.0: installation problem, cannot exec '/usr/bin/arm-apple-darwin9-g++-4.0.1': No such file or directory

How to use hash_setS? If I define BOOST_HAS_HASH the compiler will generate "error C2977: 'stdext::hash_set' : too many template arguments". [serialization] appending elements

Is it possible to append serialized elements to an existing archive? I need to keep a set of records on a file, and periodically add new entries to it (kind of like a database table). Reading the whole set, adding the new records, and serializing the set back is not an option since I expect the set to go pretty big. I have tried to keep several archives at the same stream (with no_header and no_tracking flags), but then I don't know how to read them. I have an indeterminate number of objects serialized to an archive and would like to loop until the end of the archive has been reached without reading past the end of the archive and getting a stream exception. Determining thread existence

I am trying to setup my application so that it runs as a daemon. One aspect that I need to run a sanity check on is to determine if there are currently any parent threads running. Currently this is what I am testing with, when all threads are finish running, I then join all the threads to terminate them. Doing so should give me a thread group size of 0. However, this is now the case. Currently after I join the threads, the thread group size is still 0. Here is my current test code that I am working with. I think I just answered my own question regarding whether I can use the EXPORT macro in the header that declares the class being exported. Since the EXPORT macro instantiates a static guid_initializer for the class, including it in multiple source files creates multiple static objects and results in link errors. So at this point, I wonder, why bother with the EXPORT macro at all? Given that the class has to be registered with the archive, why not just use register_type when the archive is created? When I thought the EXPORT macro allowed me to register the class in the same header where the class is created, it seemed very useful. Now I guess I don't see any advantage of using EXPORT. Hi, I'm trying to make a class which is conditionally synchronized. [Something like NullType, VoidType, or OptionType (a la F#) would be ideal but I can't seem to locate one (and I'm not sure the type system would allow such a thing-it doesn't seem to like a simple 'void']. Any better idiom or alternative approach anyone can offer for this purpose would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Jonathan
