Hello! I'm currently embedding Python in C++ and now having some problems with std::vector. I used indexing suite to wrap it and work with it in Python like a Python list. But there is a problem: when I copy it in Python style (e.g. a[:] = b) it seems like it copies elements recursively, here is a log of copying: Copy constructor Copy constructor Destructor Copy constructor Copy constructor Copy constructor Destructor Destructor Copy constructor Copy constructor Copy constructor Copy constructor Destructor Destructor Destructor .. [serialization] Multiple archives in same stream

Pardon me if this issue has been discussed earlier, but is there a particular technical issue why multiple archives cannot be serialized to (or, specifically, de-serialized from) the same stream? (I'm still on 1.38, so slap me if this works with 1.39+). However, the stream position at [3] appears to be at the end of the stream. Does the serialization read in a big chunk, regardless of whether it will be processing it all? If I hack in a set stream position at [3], then the library quite happily reads the second archive. Is it possible to have the library leave the stream pointer at the correct end position?

STLPort Install Before Building Boost 1.39.0

I'm on Windows XP SP3, msvc71 SP1, and I want to install STLport 5.2.1 before I install/build Boost 1.39.0. The STLport distribution install file (configure.bat) has two options I need help with: "--with-static-rtl" "-with-dynamic-rtl" Does Boost care whether I enable the static (libc.lib family) or whether I enable the dynamic (msvcrt.lib family) C/C++ library when linking with STLport? Then, there is the "-use-boost <boost install path>" option - I assume I should use this STLport option for Boost 1.39.0 - correct? Finally, is there anything I need to do in my building/installing of Boost itself to make sure it knows I have STLport installed? Thanks much! William Stroupe

[asio] Thread safety

Hi, I have a thread that runs io_service::run(). I have another thread that creates a timer and schedules it to fire later. Once the timer has been scheduled, the second thread forgets about it and everything is handled by the thread that runs the service. Is it safe to create/schedule a timer with an io_service from a thread while this services is being run in another thread? Thank you for your replies, Laurent

boost::bind with references

I have a function defined as template<typename T> void foo(const T& x); and then I use boost::bind(foo, x); However, once the code is inside the body of foo, the addresses of x inside foo and the addresses of x when I called bind are different. So somehow a copy is being made. I can get around it by using boost::ref(), but is there a technical reason why it doesn't "just work" and pass it by reference?

Serialization of a universal data type

Hi, I have started using Boost Serialization in one of my project and thanks for the library. I may be asking a question that might have got repeated, but i did my search on the forums but couldn't get the relevant answer. I have a data-type which is more like a universal datatype(unsigned long). Consider a 64 bit system and if the value to be stored in this datatype is greater than 8 bytes, then it is stored as value. If the value to be stored is greater than 8 bytes, then it is stored elsewhere and the pointer is stored here. By using other meta-data information, the data is extracted from this data-type. To be exact, i am referring to the datum implementation in open-source database postgresql. If i have to serialize this data-type, i need more info from other variables which store the metadata. The functions, i am trying to implement in Boost serialization are readDatum and _outDatum(similar to load/save). I don't see, how i can do that in Boost serialization, especially because of the signature of the load/save function. It only takes the version and the object to be serialized. How can i pass the other meta-data? I could always create a new data-type(say SerializableDatum) with all the required info, but then this data-type is being created only for the purpose of serialization. Is there any better way to achieve the same result? Thanks, Gokul.

Using boost::date_time library with wince

Does anybody have any experience with using boost::date_time (boost version 1.37 or later) with windows ce (aka Windows Mobile 5 or Windows Mobile 6) Specifically I'm trying to figure out the best way to get around the missing functions std::localtime() and std::gmtime(). Yes as hard as it is to believe Microsoft choose to leave these 2 simple functions out of wince, imagine that. I'm actually running into this because I'm trying to use boost::thread which uses mostly the header only parts of date_time. The problem crops up when c_time.hpp is included. Using boost with windows mobile 5 or 6.

I'm currently trying to use boost in my Windows Mobile 5/6 (aka WinCE) project and I'm having some real problems. Note the project is a port of a C++ library that is currently used in a Windows application and a Linux application. First let me say I'm using boost 1.37 and Visual Studio 2005 (VC 8), I'm not currently using STLPort. The specific libraries I'm trying to use are Thread, State machine and to some extent Date Time (mostly because Thread makes use of date_time) I'm not finding much of concrete info on how to go about doing thiss. The most help has come from the VeecoFTC regression build setup but that just got me to the point of building the boost library for the thread project. However, when I try to use thread in my project I run into problems specificly: * Wince does not implement std::localtime or std::gmtime which are used by the boost versions of localtime and gmtime in c_time.hpp. (Thread appears to depend on this via the date_time library) * Wince does not implement the standard library file locale. Most of the problems caused by this are solved be defining BOOST_NO_STD_LOCAL however the files compare.hpp and replace.hpp in boost/algorithm/string/ both don't respect the BOOST_NO_STD_LOCAL and they use std::locale a lot. Has anyone else gotten round these problems and if so what did you do? I've never been clear on why many people appear to be using STLPort with boost with winCE (or at least the VeecoFTC build is) is that something I should be doing? If so can I do it just for my WinCE builds? Does anybody know if I'd have more luck with boost 1.39 or even upgrading to Visual Studio 2008 (VC 9)? Thanks Matt Schuckmann

Hello, I'm using a mapped file in order to share my objects between many processes and I already have my own kind of key to identify them. So instead of linking them to a <char *> in the function construct(), I would like to use my own type (providing convenient functions such as less(), operator==, ...) So I mean, instead of : MyObject * my_object = mapped_file.construct<MyObject>("object_name"); I want to known if there is a way to write something like : MyKey *object_key*(...) MyObject * my_object = mapped_file.construct<MyObject>(*object_key*); I'm taking a look at the section "Building custom indexes<http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_39_0/doc/html/interprocess/customizing_inte…>" but I am not sure to be able to solve my problem with that. Hi! I'm outputting the progress from an externally executed command line application using the windows API call OutputDebugString. This means that I need to convert all line breaking characters to flush commands to make sure the text is outputted when a new line is received rather than when some underlying structure finds it suitable to linebreak. I've created a sink that writes to OutputDebugString and it works great, however unless I manually insert lots of std::endl (or flushing some other way) I won't get any output until the buffer is full. Is it possible to write an iostream filter that forces a flush on newlines or is this something I need to handle before feeding data into my stream? /David

I have the following piece of code: void MultiLog::removeLog(const std::string& name) { std::remove_if(m_logs.begin( ), m_logs.end( ), (boost::lambda::_1 ->* &Log::getName) == name); } Which fails to compile with the typical spectacular list of template error messages, the first of which is "error C2784 ... could not deduce template argument for 'const boost::lambda::lambda_functor<T> &' from 'boost::lambda::detail::member_pointer_caller<RET,A,B>'" I'm assuming that the error is because each element here is a shared_ptr<Log>, rather than a raw pointer to Log. Using bind to wrap shared_ptr::get appears to work: void MultiLog::removeLog(const std::string& name) { std::remove_if(m_logs.begin( ), m_logs.end( ), boost::bind(&Log::getName, boost::bind(&LogPtr::get, _1)) == name); } but is there are way to use the significantly cleaner & clearer member pointer operator syntax while using shared_ptr's? When I compiled the code snippet as follows, there were some errors about searching tag_of in namespace boost::fusion::traits::detail. But after reviewing the source code, I found the desired tag_of was actually located in namespace boost::fusion::detail. Moreover it will be compiled successfully if adding this full and correct namespace before tag_of in the file <is_sequence.hpp>. Hi This seems an interesting error. I have an application that when executed as ./execute runs just as fine as can be. However when run with a a daemon that loads on boot, when activated it immediately crashes with. /usr/include/boost/thread/pthread/mutex.hpp:50: void boost::mutex::lock(): Assertion `!pthread_mutex_lock(&m)' failed. The cause of the problem clearly is the lack of an in your face shell which I know and is fine. I am wondering what advice anyone might have for having a stable boost threaded tty less executable that will run. I know it is something very small to change likely in the call to execute the application but please any help is appreciated, Thank you, John D

By using Dev-C++, I used lambda expression, I want to know that if I white: typedef std::vector<int> vect1; std::vector<vect1> vect2; vect2 vect2Instance; then std::for_each(vect2Instance.begin(),vect2Instance.end(), std::for_each(_1.begin(),_1.end(),_1+=2)); is legal or not? And if legal ,Does the first two _1's mean a number in vect2 (i.e. a vect1) and the last _1 is a number in vect1(i.e. a int)? Can any one with kindness help me?

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone has successfully embedded a boost::variant<> within a recursive variant. And make_recursive_variant<> with plain types works as well (i.e. if a_t is a non-variant type). But I can't figure out how to make the two work together... Any help would be greatly appreciated. fusion::result_of::invoke_function_object and references

I have another question regarding compilation failures with fusion. If this has been discussed before, can someone please point me to the right location. If not... Is there some reason the application of result_of::invoke_function_object fails to compile for sequence argument references? ie: result_of::invoke_function_object<doit, fusion::vector<int>&>::type Digging a little, it seems that the failure is due to the size<> operator doesn't work with reference types (or is expecting the reference to be stripped prior to this point). I understand that to avoid unnecessary copies, tiers are typically used but in the case where chains of invoke_function_object would like to be strung together where there is an assignment or construction from the actual return value to a variable declared as the type obtained from result_of (in a fold for example), it seems that the vector copy is unavoidable (at least in my reading) unless the argument vector is a const reference. Is this an oversight or am I missing something? Basically I am trying to string together N function objects in the sequence where the ith object gets called with the result of the i-1th object (where each has a different argument list) using fold and I am running into extraneous copies of the return value. I can post a full example if needed. Hi! We've been using Boost 1.38.0: WinXP SP3 on 32-bit box VisualStudio 2005, MSVC++ 8.0, 32-bit builds. I've just rebuilt Boost 1.38.0 on another system for 64-bit builds: Windows Server 2008 Enterprise SP1 VisualStudio 2008, MSVC++ 9.0, 64-bit builds. Found no visible build errors during the Boost build. I was browsing the boost::format docs and did not find anything about the Thread safety of boost::format. Essentially I want to craft a bunch of error handling methods like this: void ProcessError(...args...) { static boost::format formatter(...); //Try to save the cost of creating this for every single error //do stuff LOG(boost::str(formatter % ...args...); } This method would be called from many, many threads. Is this considered safe? Is there some general information about the thread safety of boost::format methods somewhere in the docs?

[MultiArray] Postcondition of assignment

Hi list, I see in the MultiArray concept documentation that the operator= has the postcondition (*.this) == x; But if I use overlapping memory this postcondition does not hold. The attached program asserts trying to verify the postcondition. In this program I have a 2D square matrix represented as a multi_array. I then assign column j to row i. Depending on the relationship of i and j and how the implementation of operator= does the traversal over the elements to be copied, the program may not satisfy the mentioned postcondition. May I suggest some note in the documentation about this. Is it possible that the traversal can be done forward or backward to guarantee the said postcondition even in the face of overlapping memory? [Flyweight] Enumerating all values in the factory?

Hi, thanks for the flyweight library, looks good. Is there a way to enumerate all values in a factory? Consider my use case: I have a large set of data. Each element has a user defined 'tag', implemented as a flyweight<std::string>. Now the user wants to find all elements where the 'tag' matches a regex. Calculating the regex match for all elements in the dataset is expensive. If I could find all matching tags in the flyweight factory first, searching the elements is reduced to comparing two flyweights rather than doing a regex match. Consider: struct data { flyweight<std::string> m_tag; }; vector<data> m_some_data; The straight forward approach is costly: for (iterator i=m_some_data.begin(); i!=m_some_data.end() && regex_match(*i); ++i) ; with the regex match calculated for every element in the vector. A much more efficient solution is to find all elements in the flyweight factory that match the regex and then compare the flyweights. vector<flyweight<std::string> > m_matching_tags=find_matching_flyweights(regex); Now iterating over the data needs to compare two flyweights per data element which should be a lot faster than doing a regex match. Hoping someone can help me. I am trying to implement a basic ICMP ping using boost::asio. The boost asio library documentation concerning ICMP is pretty scant. It illustrates how to connect an icmp socket, but not how to send an echo request packet, or any other details about how the protocol can be used. changing file output suffixes

Hi, Our toolchain generates files ending in ".doj" for objects, so I've been trying to configure my custom toolset module to use this. [ptr_container]delete_clone and shared libraries

On Windows, I plan to create a ptr_vector in a separate DLL and propagate it to the executable for ownership (Factory-style). The executable will be responsible for the lifetime of this ptr_vector, and will eventually result in "delete" being called on each element in the ptr_vector. However, this 'delete' will be from the executable's memory manager, when the memory was originally allocated in the shared library's memory manager, causing serious issues. It would be ideal to specify a delete_clone class that ptr_vector would use (via ADL) and would force those objects in the ptr_vector to use the 'delete' call from the DLL's memory manager, and not the executable's. I don't see that this is going to be possible, or at least able to be done easily. Since the delete_clone's operator will have to be implemented in a CPP file, so it will be included into the shared library. This also implies that I'll have to import the delete_clone's interface, since this DLL will be loaded dynamically with LoadLibrary() in Windows. I just don't see this happening. Now, if ptr_vector had a function like so: ptr_vector::set_deleter() I could give it a pointer to a global function in my DLL, and the deleter becomes fully transparent to my executable. It just has to keep the ptr_vector around and let it fall out of scope and the deleter from the DLL will be used to delete each object in the ptr_vector. However, it isn't this simple and I need advice on how I can make this work. Thanks.

Creating a boost thread in a matlab mex file causes matlab to crash

I'm having some issues getting matlab and boost threads to work together. I'm posting here and a number of other places as I don't think this problem fits into any one domain. Specifically, whenever I try to use boost threads within a mex file, it causes matlab to crash. strange nested bind behavior

I have a couple of classes that all have a few functions with identical names and signatures. Some of these common functions are template functions where one of the arguments to the function is a callback. For example. class Foo { template<typename Handler> void func(int x, Handler callback) }; class Bar { template<typename Handler> void func(int x, Handler callback) }; Somewhere else, I have a class such as: class Test { variant<Foo&, Bar&> variant_obj; void callback(double d, float f, boost::system::error_code ec, size_t s); void test(); }; and i want to invoke func on the object represented by the variant, with the callback going to this->callback, bind the values of d and f from the place I invoke the visitor, and allowing the implementation of func to specify the values of ec and s. Hopefully this makes sense. I've done the following: struct func_visitor : public boost::static_visitor<> { template<typename T, typename Handler> void operator()(T& t, int x, Handler h) const { t.func(x, h); } }; //... void Test::test() { boost::apply_visitor( boost::bind( func_visitor(), _1, 7, boost::protect(boost::bind( &Test::callback, this, 3.0, 5.0f, _1, _2))), variant_obj); } So now, func should expect that Handler has the signature void (error_code, size_t) I compiled it with empty definitions for both occurences of func() just to make sure everything was ok, then I implement one copy of func as follows: template<typename Handler> void func(int x, Handler callback) { callback(make_error_code(success), (size_t)0); } and now I get compilation error pointing to the line above that invokes callback, with the error along the lines of (it's on a different machine with no network access so i can't paste it) void boost::_bi::protected_bind_t<F>::operator()<boost::system::error_code, size_t>(A1&,A2&) const' : cannot convert parameter 2 from 'size_t' to 'size_t &' If I change the above function to the following: template<typename Handler> void func(int x, Handler callback) { size_t temp = 0; callback(make_error_code(success), temp); } then everything works. Is this normal, or is this some kind of bug in either the library or my compiler? All of my function signatures take arguments by value, so I'm not sure why it would want to convert it to a reference first.

Recursive boost::variant and/or movability?

Hi, I'm using boost::variant<> while parsing an input file to create a AST. The example at: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_39_0/doc/html/variant/tutorial.html#variant… does something very similar. However, it seems that the example usage of boost::recursive_wrapper<> is inefficient, not because of the wrapper itself, but because the creation of a tree of variants becomes more and more costly as that tree grows. The attached example is similar to the tutorial. Creating a nested tree 10,000 deep (with no branching) causes more than 100,000,000 copy-constructions. I.e. since there's no move-awareness, for each single leaf that gets added to the tree we end up creating a new node, adding the leaf to it, then recursively copying over the entire sub-tree up to that point. Creating a move-constructor for the variant type didn't do any good (it was never invoked). But several discussions online (including notes from the original review) imply that boost::variant<> is move-aware. Is this the case? If so, does anyone know how I can get move semantics working using boost::recursive_wrapper<>? I also tried changing the variant type(s) to std::unique_ptr<> rather than boost::recursive_wrapper<>, but that didn't work either (build errors due to non-copyability, specifically in "variant/variant.hpp":404). This is Boost 1.39, and I'm building with GCC 4.4 in C++0x mode. Thanks for the help! -- Matthew L. Creech

Hi, I have a small program that receives messages asynchronously (in their own threads). I am using boost::mutexs to synchronize access.. boost::variant usage question

Suppose I've got a bunch of different classes that all support a common compile-time interface. In other words, a bunch of different classes, each of which has N methods with identical names and signatures but no common base class. I want to make a variant out of all these types, and in addition I want to allow visititation to all of the common methods. Currently I have defined a separate static_visitor derived class for every common method, but this is a little bit annoying. For example, I have currently something like this: struct Foo1 { void f(int); void g(double); void h(string); }; struct Foo2 { void f(int); //Common method void g(double); //Common method void h(float); //Not a common method }; struct visit_f : public boost::static_visitor<> { template<typename T> void operator()(T& t, int i) const { t.f(i); } }; struct visit_g : public boost::static_visitor<> { template<typename T> void operator()(T& t, double d) const { t.g(d); } }; What would be the suggested way of making this more generic, so that I need not have a separate visitor for every method?

I'm trying to learn how to use Boost.Threads with this example: http://pastebin.ca/1472832 On Ubuntu 8.04 with Boost 1.34 I'm compiling with a makefile like this: t1: t1.o g++ t1.o /usr/lib/libboost_thread-mt.so -o t1 t1.o: t1.cpp g++ -I /usr/include/boost/ -c t1.cpp However I get very similar execution times for the single-threaded version and the one which creates two threads. Hi, I've been trying out boost::accumulators and it's quite an amazing library! I'd like to use the library in an embedded setting where floating point operations are very expensive, but accuracy is not crucial (though numerical stability is). I have a few question regarding this library. 1. I sometimes need to clear the contents of an accumulator. What is the best way to do this? 2. If my platform does not support HW floating point ops, and all my sample values are, e.g. ints, is there a way to specify that the *computation *and *return value itself* (i.e. result_type, e.g. the mean) will be done in ints (naturally, at the cost of precision)? 3. [multi_array] Slices along the N'th dimension of a multi_array in a generic function

I have a generic function which will take in a boost::multi_array of dimension size N. I need to take slices along the M'th < N dimension (known at compile time). I can't figure out how to do this with the multi_array library and associated ranges/array_views. Is there another way to do this rather than building a boost::indices object directly? Besides the sliced dimension, I will always want the entire ranges for the other ones. I believe the problem is that the index_gen object needs different types as we build the indices in parts. The following code shows what a hardcoded example would look like for N = 4 and M = 3 const std::size_t n_1 = 3; const std::size_t n_2 = 4; const std::size_t n_3 = 5; const std::size_t n_4 = 6; typedef boost::multi_array<double, 4> array_type; array_type vals(boost::extents[n_1][n_2][n_3][n_4]); //...fill the array... typedef boost::multi_array_types::index_range range; typedef boost::multi_array_types::index_gen index_gen_type; //Trying to do this dynamically instead, but in pieces. Hi all, On the MUMPS (a MUltifrontal Massively Parallel sparse direct Solver) project website they say: "Karl Meerlenberg has developped C++ bindings for MUMPS. They are available in BOOST, the path is boost/numeric/bindings/mumps/mumps_driver.hpp ". Does anybody know anything about this library? Yep we really do have a completely different compiler\toolchain from any currently present, with different switches to GCC, different extensions for compiled objects etc. Of course bjam doesn't need to be built for the target architecture :) It's just that while poking around it looked like bjam needed to have some knowledge about the toolchains it was building for and I suspected that the .jam files in the directory I mentioned earlier were a means to do this. Hi, I'm a bit confused. It seems like all the includes for boost spirit are "classic" i.e. it seems to me I have an old version, but I'm currently using 1.39. I looked on the spirit website and there is no information about the correct way to use the latest version of the spirit framework. The most I found was a post from about a year ago about the "classic" includes. The documentation on the boost website doesn't have any information. Is there some information about this somewhere? (compiler file 'f:\dd\vctools\compiler\utc\src\p2\p2symtab.c', line 5809) Attached is a test file producing the problem. The crash happens when I add BOOST_PROTO_DEFINE_OPERATORS. Am I doing something wrong? Sadly, this was a workaround to avoid deriving my class from proto::terminal because of a problem (supposedly) created by the address-of operator. building boost with unsupported compiler

Hi, I'm looking to build Boost with a compiler not currently supported, but I'm struggling to find information on where I should really begin. It seems that I'll need to create my own toolset module (something like ..../boost_1_39_0/tools/build/v2/tools/blackfin.jam) with the toolchain's specific build switches etc, rebuild bjam then build Boost. I presume that boost also has some libraries which may need some specific options, or tweaking to work but am I getting the gist of it correctly? Should I be expecting major configuration headaches (toolchain-specific build\runtime issues aside) in adding a new architecture? Thanks, - Sean

I did the following typedef: typedef boost::adjacency_list<setS, vecS, bidirectionalS, EdgeClass, NodeClass> Graph; EdgeClass and NodeClass is some classes holding the properties of edges and nodes so that I can access them by using g[u].some_property = 1; My problem is that I'm building the graph incrementally and the graph is huge. And with the definition I'm using the vector to hold the vertices, which results in many memory relocation and copy and makes the program stagnate. I wanted to use listS/mapS for the vertex list instead. However, the bundled property seems to work only with vecS only. Otherwise, compilation error will be thrown. I want to extend the program_options to support parsing of value types that are not supported by default. For example, parsing of enum types. Suppose I have an enum typedef enum { ValueA, ValueB, ValueC } TestEnum; as well as some other enums. What I'd like to do is something like this: options_description options; variables_map variables; options.add_options() ("test", value<TestEnum>(), "test") ("test2", value<TestEnum2>(), "test2"); etc. So that on the command line I can specify something along the lines of foo.exe --test=ValueA --test2=ValueAA and it will automatically convert them appropriately. Anyone can point me in the direction?

I am hoping someone can point me the in right direction regarding this code snippit failing to compile. My suspicion is that it is a header problem but any help would be appreciated. In short, I seem to be missing why the binary form of mpl::transform won't work with fusion::vector. (unary form works just fine). The code below just attempts to make a std::pair<> from the contents of two sequences (this is just an example to illustrate the transform problem). If the two sequences are mpl::vectors, everything is fine. If they are fusion::vectors then 'lots of errors'. I'm fairly new to both mpl and fusion so I am not ruling out the fact that I have done something stupid. I am currently using in a project a custom-writen recursive-decent parser, which uses an filtering_istream so I can support compressed input. The only functionality used is peekchar, getchar and integer extraction with 'stream >> i'. I am finding that C++ streams, particularly when it comes to integer extraction, are giving terrible performance. In a small test, uncompressing to a buffer and then writing a simple custom reader on that memory buffer gives 10x performance. I would perfer not to write and support such a tool if possible. Is there a boost library which easily supports a parser with 1 character lookahead and simple things like integer extraction? Looking at the documentation, Boost::Spirit seems like a very big hammer to crack this quite small nut, and it is unclear to me how well it would fit into an existing recursive decent parser. Has anyone ever used it as such? Is there a simple alternative? Chris

Hi, I am getting confused, could anyone clarify the following points? (Note that I am in a single thread context) 1- After a call to socket.async_send_to(buffer, remote_endpoint, write_handler) followed by a call to socket.cancel() is it possible that the write operation completed before I called cancel() and that my write_handler will be called with no error? 2- After a call to socket.async_send_to(buffer, remote_endpoint, write_handler) followed by a call to socket.cancel() is it possible that some data has actually been written to the socket (let's assume the buffer is quite big) and that then, the operation has been canceled? In such case, would my write_handler be called with both boost::asio::placeholders::error set AND boost::asio::placeholders::bytes_transferred equal to the partial data that has been written? The text of my original message is: I'm trying to implement the IncidenceGraph concept for an non-BGL undirected graph like datastructure. Following the boost documentation the target function used with edges from out_edges(u,g) must give vertices != u. Can somebody please explain me why this requirement is in BGL! I think it can make the adaption very difficult as it requieres to artificially orientate undirected edges for each call to out_edges. Any help would be much appreciated! best regards, Chris

There is an issue however with 'Nulls' that possibly exist in the database. I use underneath OTL c++ db library and it has a 'null indicator' like many db libraries do. So if I see a value where null indicator is set to true, should I serialize it out and if yes -- is there something like 'NaN' for all the different value types defined? or should I skip serializing that specific field? that would I think work (unless I do not foresee something) -- in the sense that the field will not get loaded back by 'unserialize' and therefore will contain the value assigned in its constructor. just wanted to hear opinions on this. thank you -- V S P toreason(a)fastmail.fm -- http://www.fastmail.fm - mmm... So there is another function in the same boost header file ( #include <boost/serialization/shared_ptr.hpp> ) that defines a 'load' function for the shared ptr However -- what I do not undestand is how to invoke this function it seems like I have to iterate through every entry in the archive and then call load to read it into a shared ptr? That seems to be contrary to all the other mechanism supported by the Serialization library. The basic examples just say that I can take a container and just shift it in (or out) of Archiver -- but that does not work if the container is of shared pointers. That's why I went the route of iterating through every element of the container to serialize, and not do not undestand how to load it back. importing boost-python module in python on windows

Hi, I have created an extension boost python module for C++ class, successfully using Visual Studio 2009, and get a shared library(.dll) as output. However I am having trouble importing this module in my python code. I have explicitly tried importing the dll as resource in an Eclipse PyDev project, and also set in windows PATH environment variable, the location for this dll. With the PATH set, I also tried import from the python shell, but no success. Can someone describe what is the process to import boost_python_modules in python on windows. Thanks, Seema

Hi folks, Sorry for the confusion i've caused. It was a problem in my projects include-path, not with the include-path of gcc itself. I included files from another library i use, and this library contains a file named "assert.h" - why it was named so that it clashes with the system-assert i don't know. I renamed this file and altered it's #define include-guards. Now everything works. VS 2003 Wierd Linking Problem

Dear all, I have installed boost according to the guide (http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_39_0/more/getting_started/windows.html) and have set the includes and libs directory accordingly (D:\Boost_1_38\lib for libraries and D:\Boost_1_38\ for includes). I try the basic code listed at point 4/ of the guide, but receive the following error: LINK : fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'D:\Boost_1_38\lib.obj' It seems, as if the VS put an empty name of an object file, attached it to the libraries directory and appended a .obj suffix. Linker error on linux...

Hi, Thanks to Mr Watanabe, it compiled on Windows. Now I am trying to compile on Linux. I was hoping things would be easier because of package managers. The package manager installed headers into /usr/include/boost and libs into /usr/lib/ (found out from YAST) When I try to compile the same example<http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_39_0/doc/html/boost_asio/example/chat/chat_…>with (c++ -I /usr/include/ chat_server.cpp -o chat_server) I get errors. I guess I should also specify a library on the command line. But which library I should include? The error messages seems not very helpful. It doesn't print the line number of the error, but things like .text+0xb3: chat_server.cpp:(.text+0xb3): undefined reference to `boost::system::get_system_category()' I grepped in lib folder for a name with system, but none from boost. A few libraries (eg. fusion) have sufficiently complicated (and thorough) documentation that they have sections, sub-sections, and maybe sub-sub-sections. In that case I instinctively expect that the arrow right at the top right of the page will take me to the next sections, or sub-sections (ie the next peer of the page I'm looking at), whereas in fact it always takes me to the next page. Does anyone else consider this is not quite right, and is it worth changing it? - Rob.

Hello, I'm using boost::ptr_map successfully on Linux, compiling with gcc 4.3.2. However, now i tried the same code on Windows XP, using MinGW with gcc 3.4.5 i get the following error: "error: there are no arguments to 'assert' that depend on a template parameter, so a declaration of 'assert' must be available". I had exactly the same error on Linux, there i put a #include <cassert> before the #include to boost::ptr_map and everything worked. But on windows, i tried #include <cassert> and #include <assert.h>, also a #include <cassert> #ifndef assert #define assert assert #endif in case something was messing with the name. I tried version 1.39 and 1.37 on windows and the result is the same. I also carefully inspected the headers i also include, suspecting some might #define an include-guard that confuses with assert. No luck yet and I'm out of ideas now. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Just a general question, Could one use Boost.Regex to build a Well-Formed and Validating XML parser whose view is iterators to elements inside the XML document? In other words, create a class that acts like an XML parser so that you may derive from it to say create a XMPP class? Etienne

BOOST_FOREACH question

Suppose I've got a concrete instance C of some class, and a pair of iterators X and Y representing a range [X, Y). I want to do the following: int a, b, c; while (X != Y) { C.foo(*X, a, b, c); ++X; } I can type it out like that, but actually X and Y are zip_iterators, and it's hard for me to figure out how to parameterize the zip_iterator to instantiate it. Even still the for_each is already complicated and kind of hard to read, I feel like there should be a one or two-liner to do this :( the io_service::post() function simply calls encode_handler() on another thread. I'm thinking it might just be easier to walk each sequence manually, but at some point I was hoping to templatize the async_encode() function rather than have it take vectors.

[Q] help serializing a multiset of shared ptrs

The timeout is meant to work as a character delay, allowing a maximum of 10 seconds between each transmitted character before failing. The writing part works A-ok. The reading throws the expected exception if no characters are transmitted by the oppositing device. However, if I transmit 9 characters from the device, these characters are displayed, appended by a '\0' character (or whichever character I choose as default in read<char>()). io.run() seems to return immediately, not even waiting for any characters to be transmitted. Adding completion_conditions to async_read(), like transfer_all() or transfer_at_least(1) did not do the trick, either. What is going wrong here? Hello all, I am running into some odd "quirks" of the filtering_istream in the boost::iostreams library. Perhaps I am just using it wrong, but all code compiles, and does _almost_ what I would expect it to. Unfortunately, on my platform anyway ( gcc 4.3.3 on 64 bit linux ) - and verified by another user ( also on linux 64 bit, gcc 4.4 ) - that the two code blocks not only differ, but differ in odd ways. The filtering_istream blocks on input, and will not resume until *4* EOF characters are sent. If I remove the invert(tee(log_file)) only *2* EOF need to be sent. First off, I do not know why it is blocking (perhaps this is expected from a filtering_istream which expects to read the entire stream to EOF). I have not found this documented anywhere. Either way, the fact that multiple EOF's need to be sent, and the fact that that number differs depending on the pipeline, leads me to think there is either a bug or I am not using something as intended. Thanks for any help! -Michal p.s. My requirements are only to create an istream which sends what is read from standard input to a log file, while still having the input available for processing by the application. Maybe can suggest another way to solve the problem?
