[Pool] Overhead in using singleton_pool?

Hello list, I would like to know if there is any overhead in using singleton_pool instead of a simple pool object. Especially, I guess there could be some overhead due to synchronisation, as the singleton interface is guaranteed to be thread safe. I currently have some trouble with deallocation order of statics at program exit (I am using a static pool object), but everything works fine when I use singleton_pool instead. Are there any disadvantages (runtime) when using singleton_pool? Thanks! Julius

boost autolinkig issue - library names on vc9?

Hi, I'm having an issue with boost autolinking on Visual Studio 9 (2008), with the boost-pything library. the boost build process generates libraries of the name: libboost_XXX-vc90-mt-gd-1_39.lib and the like, but interestingly autolinkig fails with the following message: 1>LINK : fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'boost_python-vc90-mt-gd-1_39.lib' am I doing something wrong? Linking to release libs in debug build

I've noticed my boost libs are slowing my game down incredibly in my debug builds. I'd like to link to release boost libs even in Debug, is that possible and will it cause any problems? Secondly, I'm not sure how to do this. Boost is somehow auto-linking to the correct lib for my build (I've downloaded the libs precompiled for visual studio). Does anyone know how this auto-linking process works and how I can override it to link to release libs instead of debug? Thanks! -John

how to link libraries in Jamroot?

Hello, I am not very experienced with boost. I try to learn how to use the boost.thread library. After early bjam compilation errors (undefined references, because the boost_thread library was not linked), I found that this Jamroot creates my executable successfully: exe threadtest : threadtest.cpp : <library>/usr/lib/libboost_thread-gcc42-mt-1_34_1.so.1.34.1 ; Is it possible to simplify the <library> parameter to something like "boost_thread"? The reason is that I am developing on different systems with different boost versions, so that I don't want to hardcode the library version in the Jamroot. I thought that the boost.build system should be smart enough that it finds the appropriate library file if you only tell it "use the thread library please". How can I make the Jamroot independent from the boost installation and, more importantly, from the operation system? Best wishes, A. Kalaghan

[array] GCC 4.2 warnings with array initialization

Hi all, When building with boost 1.36 and GCC 4.2 under Xcode, the following code produces a warning: boost::array<int, 2> warningArray = { 1, 2 }; warning: missing braces around initializer for 'int [2]' We see no warnings with GCG 4.0. We have a zero warning tolerance. All warnings are counted as errors. The boost::array documentation indicates that the single brace approach should work for conforming compilers, according to 8.5.1 (11) of the Standard. So does that mean that GCC 4.2 is non-conforming? Sure enough, when I change the code to include a second set of braces, the warning is gone: boost::array<int, 2> noWarningArray = { { 1, 2 } }; But this is a problem as we move to GCC 4.2 because a) we use initialized arrays all over the place, so this means a lot of little changes, and b) requiring an extra set of braces is counter intuitive and irritating at best. I don't like the idea of making the above code changes, and I don't want to globally disable the warning because it might be useful for other code. Does anyone have a better solution? Why can I not put a break in this part of asio sample code?

Hi, I am using the async_tcp_echo_server.cpp<http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_39_0/doc/html/boost_asio/example/echo/async…>sample code to understand asio. when I am tracing code in visual studio, it doeasn't let me put a breakpoint inside start() function in session class. Will it be run in another thread? is that the reason for not being able to put a breakpoint? Though it seems I can put breakpints for other codes that run in other threads... Why can I not put here? I tried to break at the point calling this function and step into from there. it jumps to async_receive(...) function in win_iocp_socket_service.hpp file. Could someone help me understand what is going on, or give me some pointers about how to trace such code? I would like to have a variable specific to each thread. This means I would like to use the same variable name and that this name corresponds to different instances in different threads. For example, I would like to build a log stream that writes in different files in different threads. For example I would like to have a variable "flog" that behaves like a std::ostream: flog << "hello world!" ; I have found the two following solutions based on the use of boost::thread_specific_ptr but I am not fully satisfied with them: boost::thread_specific_ptr<std::ofstream> flogs ; // first solution using a function std::ostream &flog() { return *flogs.get() ; } // but I then have to add () after flog: flog() << "hello world!" ; // second solution using a macro #define flog flog() // but macros are not very recommended in C++. Any other idea that would allow me to write flog << "hello world!" like with std::cout? Note that I also tried to write a class derived from ostream with only one instance flog. This class had a special stream buffer using a thread specific pointer. However, the flog instance stores some informations like the precision of real numbers (flog << setprecision(10) for example) and the output of one thread can then interfere with the output of other threads... I've used them in other projects and it's always been a welcome relief. For my current project, I'm trying to use the Boost Regex++ library in MSVC++ 6.0 (under Vista) to do some basic regex. I've installed the libraries as per the tutorial and added the Boost path to my compiler and linker includes. A lost of the basic functionality works fine, but I'm having trouble with autocompletion. The bigger issue is that certain parts of the library seem to throw the compiler. I know that sounds like a slightly flippant question, but I really don't get it. I've used tuples a few times, always for the multiple return value behaviour using tie( ), but in the end it always seems to be a better solution to use a struct. Code like t.get<1>( ) = "fred"; is a bit non-obvious, compared to t.forename = "fred"; So have I entirely missed the point of tuples? Thanks, Rob.

building boost libraries for cross-compiled project

I am trying to use boost (specifically the regex part) in a cross-compiled environment. The target is a single board computer running Linux on ARM. My development computer is a Windows 2000 machine. The cross compiler is a GNU C++ compiler that I got from the SBC vendor. It is located here: c:\TechnologicToolchain\devel-tools\crosstool-cygwin\bin\arm-unknown-linux-g nu-g++.exe When I build my ARM application program, by PATH on the PC is set to this: c:\TechnologicToolchain\devel-tools\crosstool-win\bin; \ c:\TechnologicToolchain\devel-tools\crosstool-cygwin\bin; \ c:\TechnologicToolchain\devel-tools\cygwin How do I build the boost libraries on my development PC so I can link them with my cross-compiled application code and run them on the ARM target? I am unfamiliar with bjam so I am having trouble figuring out how to configure it to use a specific compiler executable. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Steve

Boost Python is slow?

Hello everyone! I'm currently embedding Python and have a problem. I have a struct (point) which looks like struct TPoint { int x, y; }; And I want it to be usable from Python. I made it in two ways: the first one was writing all the warpping by myself according to Python/C API, and the second was wrap it with Boost.Python. So it looks like class_<TPoint>("TPoint") .def_readwrite("x", &TPoint::x) .def_readwrite("y", &TPoint::y); It wraps ok but here is a problem: I create a huge (1000000 items) list of objects of that type: def cr_fig(n): res = [] while n>0: res.append(TPoint()) n -= 1 return res And then when I use a simple function which just increments the x member of every object, this function takes about 4 seconds to process the whole list (1000000 items) of Boost-wrapped objects and less than a second to process objects of my own wrapping! Hey all, having a small issue with thread_specific_ptr. I'm a MSVC user and I'm getting a memory leak reported with the leak detection from _CrtSetDbgFlag and I was wondering if it was possible to suppress it somehow? I only ask because I know that these leaks in particular are false positives (or so it seems) and I wish to filter them out so I can quickly see each time if anything else is leaking without having to "manually" filter the log myself. playing around with tutorial codes to understand ioservice

Hi, I have been working on asio from the online documentation for more than a week but I am still confused about the io_service. Especially about what happens when we pass io_service to so many other things (timer, socket, chat_client etc.)? I hoped playing around with the codes in tutorial may help me in understanding. I modified the code a bit from timer3.cpp example<http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_39_0/doc/html/boost_asio/tutorial/tuttimer3…>. (modified code is in attachment) When I add another io_service object, I was thinking one would run then the other one would start since in the comments of io_service.hpp it says * The run() function blocks until all work has finished and there are no * more handlers to be dispatched, or until the io_service has been stopped. but when I run two io_service objects io.run(); io2.run(); I get output from two of them interchangingly. (first print in each line is address of deadline timer, I added in print function to see which thread is running.) 0012FF04 0 0012FEE4 1 0012FEE4 2 0012FEE4 3 0012FF04 4 Could someone help me understand io_service class? (Maybe some pointers to old discussions could help.) I also read some papers about Proactor pattern, without too much help. Maybe example code can be supplied with more comments. I would also appreciate suggestions and pointers (probably in private emails to ozgur7 AT gmail com) to help me about implementing a simple command server (proxy). I am trying to implement a server to accept clients and run MySQL queries (example: look up name and password pair in a table) and pass results to clients. re gularized gamma incomplete function (v 1.39)

I am using boost v1.39 libraries on Ubuntu 9.04. This is the first time I am using the boost libraries for some mathematical work. I needed to use the regularized incomplete gamma function for one of my programs. The documentation told me that gamma_q was the upper incomplete gamma function for the job. So I tried the syntax gamma_q(a,b) and I got an error saying "gamma_q was not declared in this scope". Realizing that the boost libraries were in /opt/boost, I compiled with the following : g++ ggpdf.cpp -I /opt/boost/include/boost-1_39/ I included the boost header with a #include<boost/math/special_functions/gamma.hpp>. I stil got the same error (gamma_q was not declared in scope). I then thought that I should link the libraries manually and then tried g++ ggcdf.cpp -I /opt/boost/include/boost-1_39/ -L /opt/boost/lib/ ...and still no luck. Also, the size of my /opt/boost folder is only 65M, which seems kind of small. newbie weighted edges question

Hello everyone, I am new at using Boost libraries and was hoping that someone could give me some pointers how to start.The problem that I want to solve is as follows: I want to build a directed graph model with edges that are weighted.But instead of having one weight each edge is suppose to have 2 weights, each representing a different parameter in my graph model.The weights are to be used separately for different functions. Also, this is trivial but a pointer would certainly help. I would like to take each vertice in the graph and ¨know¨ its immediate neighbours. Thanks in advance. Fahad

I am building a make_ function for a complicated type with many generic parameters that all have defaults. Dear All, Apologies for my ignorance but I would be extremely grateful if someone would kindly point me in the right direction. I am trying to parallelize my Monte Carlo simulation. The bottleneck in the process is the generation of Normally distributed random numbers (using boost.random libraries), so I was hoping to substantially improve the efficiency of the process by setting 2 or 3 cores of my quad core processor to the the task of generating these numbers while one core gets on with the rest of the algorithm. The simplest way I can envisage doing this is by allocating shared memory that is simultaneously written (by rand number generating threads) and read (by main thread), with some method of ensuring that the main thread doesn't read too far ahead (perhaps locking or just a simple while loop?). Boost.thread alone doesn't seem to be enough - an attempt to do exactly this resulted in a substantial slow down (with or without locking - without may result in undefined behaviour but I tried it anyway to see if it was causing the slowdown). Do I need to investigate shared pointers? I really need some large container in shared memory which I can fill in any order, much as would be the case if I were appending to and reading from a file, but hopefully faster! Any suggestions please? Sorry for the lack of understanding! Hi, I cannot figure out from the documentation if I can call io_service::run() from an asynchronous handler, called itsels by run() of the same io_service. If it is possible, should I call reset() or not? I tried and it seems to work under linux, but I need to call run() in a loop as it returns prematurely, even with an io_service::work(), and with/without a reset(). The reason I need to do this is because my asynchronous handlers are calling legacy code that needs to perform synchronous operations. Using synchronous socket operations while this lasts as it was suggested to handle this kind of situations would be possible, but a lot more complicated in my setup. bootstrap.sh generates incorrect libdir in project-config.jam

Hi all, When I ran bootstrap.sh --prefix=$HOME/pool, it did generate a broken project- config.jam--it used option.set libdir : /lib ; instead of option.set libdir : /home/andreas/pool/lib ; Has anybody else run into the issue described here? Any chance for fixed tarballs? Thanks, Andreas

Hello, I am trying to use an option that can have either zero or one arguments. I have seen an example in the documentation claiming that the following code would allow the user to provide either zero or one tokens to option 'verbose', but instead it throws an exception "extra parameter" when one token is given. Am I correct in believing that tuples have to be accessed by element index, as in tuple.get<0>() Multi-Index container has a really nice facility to use named (well typed really) tags in these kind of expressions, but it seems tuples do not. Anyone fancy adding it to tuple? - Rob.

Possible to put path to boost library somewhere else than Jamroot file?

Hi, my question is whether I can put the path to the boost library in a another file than the Jamroot file (eg, boost-build.jam)? I run run longish simulations on multiple workstations, essentially Debian and Mac OS X machines. For good or bad reasons, the path to the boost library is differs between machines. I give the path via an <include> in the Jamroot file. Thus the Jamroot file has to be different on each machine. However, my code is synchronized via Subversion between the machines which poses a problem for the Jamroot file. Thus, I either can only do one-way synchronisation from one master computer and edit the Jamroot file on the other machines locally (marking the conflict as resolved after the first update after this edit) or exclude the Jamroot file from Subversion. Since I probably do modify the Jamroot file from time to time, it would be nice to include it in Subversion. Currently, I solve the problem by sticking to one-way synchronisation but if there would be another place to put the path, this would be nicer. Thanks. Markus

[BGL] Large graphs

Hi! I am using the BGL to represent a fractal structure which I iteratevley grow. As I intend to handle large structures I usually preallocate the required space for the final fractal in the beginning. My construction process then uses the graph object to put in new edges into the same graph object. Now, if I always use the same graph object things get messed up for large fractals. However, if I use 2 graph structures, one which represents the last and one the comming generation, everything is ok (which doubles memory requirements for nothing). I have no clue what the problem here is. For small fractals both schemes produce correct fractals, but not for large ones. I suspect that there are some really strange problems here with allocated memory going on. BTW, is there a way to preallocate the required memory for the edges of a adjacency_list graph? I do know ahaed how many edges in total and how many edges per vertex will be in the final graph, so that I could preallocate memory if it is possible. Preallocating vertices is easy... In case someone may have an idea, but needs the code I am having trouble with, no problem, just contact me. Thanks in advance, Sebastian

I notice that in the changes for the newest boost that "named vertexes" is now supported in adjacency_list. I can't find anything on this feature though. I have the book, have searched the web. Only thing I find is comments in adjacency_list.hpp that maybe refers to a NamedGraph concept? I don't see that in the docs either: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_39_0/libs/graph/doc/table_of_contents.html Could someone give me an overview of what this feature is and why I might use it? Probably better...point me to some place that documents it?

I've attached simple project with documentation. There are two problems:1. doxygen generates documentation with full paths to headers <D:/c++/my_project/include/my_project/h1.hpp> instead of <my_project/h1.hpp> As you can see in attachment, i configure doxygen by defining STRIP_FROM... directives, where $(TOP)/include = D:/c++/project/include: <doxygen:param>STRIP_FROM_PATH=$(TOP)/include <doxygen:param>STRIP_FROM_INC_PATH=$(TOP)/include TOP variable i define in Jamroot as: path-constant TOP : . ; What do i do wrong? 2. Hi everybody, this is my first post to the boost mailing list. I'm using boost_1_39 I wanted to use write_graphviz today with my custom graph adapter that implements VertexListGraph as well as IncidenceGraph. The documentation states, that write_graphviz only requires a VertexListGraph. But inside, it uses an edge_iterator, and calls edges(g), both of which belong to the EdgeListGraph. Am I right here, or did I miss something? If yes, should I implement a specialization that only calls out_edges() for every vertex, and thus a VertexListGraph would be sufficient? Null shared pointer confusion

I observe that with line A included (but not line B), a bad_weak_ptr is thrown by the line which declares z. With line B included (but not line A), all is well. >From looking at the boost source, it seems that line A results in a shared_ptr to nothing (use_count() == 0), and line B results in a shared_ptr to 0 (use_count() == 1). I can work around this, I'm sure. Can anyone clarify my muddled thinking and explain why boost is behaving correctly in this situation (if indeed it is!) Many thanks Carl

I'm upgrading from C++Builder 2007 with Boost 1.34.1 to C++Builder 2009 with Boost 1.35. (I realize that this is a few versions behind, but C++Builder compatibility seems problematic enough that I'm going to try sticking with 1.35, which is what the vendor officially supports. Or would people here recommend using a later version?) I'm running into problems loading XML archives containing vectors that were created by Boost 1.34.1. This appears to be the same problem that others have reported: https://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/ticket/1774 https://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/ticket/2271 http://lists.boost.org/boost-users/2009/05/48292.php If I understand those pages correctly, to work around this problem, I should be able to copy the relevant changes from Boost 1.39.0's boost/serialization/vector.hpp and boost/serialization/array.hpp, plus change BOOST_SERIALIZATION_VECTOR_VERSION from 3 to 4, and my copy of 1.35 will work both with 1.34.1 and with 1.36 and above. boost::random distribution is not working within a custom class

Hey there, I'm having a problem with the boost::random library and I can't figure out what's going on, so maybe you guys might help me out. Here's the scenario (code below): I wrote a small class that should encapsulate a random number generator (floating point, uniform in [0,1) ) so that I ultimately can switch between different approaches (boost and non-boost) without the rest of my code ever caring. Within this class I have a boost::mt19937 object and a pointer to a boost::uniform_01<boost::mt19937&, double> as private members. Within the constructor I actually create an instance of uniform_01 via new and initialize it with the mt19937 RNG. Now within the constructor (see cout statement) the ran_boost->operator()() or (*ran_boost)() work perfectly and yield some random double between 0 and 1. However, when using the randomNumberGenerator object created in main.cpp I'm struck with segfault. Doing some backtrace it turns out that it fails with in boost::random::mersenne_twister<unsigned int, 32, 624, 397, 31, 2567483615u, 11, 7, 2636928640u, 15, 4022730752u, 18, 3346425566u>::operator() ( this=0x89485ed18949ed31) at /home/fochler/usr/include/boost/random/mersenne_twister.hpp:275 If I try to use global object ran2 (declared extern in random2.h and defined in random2.cpp) I also get a segfault, this time with in boost::random::detail::pass_through_engine<boost::random::mersenne_twister<unsigned int, 32, 624, 397, 31, 2567483615u, 11, 7, 2636928640u, 15, 4022730752u, 18, 3346425566u>&>::base (this=0x0) at /home/fochler/usr/include/boost/random/detail/pass_through_engine.hpp:42 42 base_type& base() { return helper_type::ref(_rng); } I don't really know (a) what is going on and what I've messed up and (b) whether these two errors (using the local and the global object) are connected. functional/hash and mp_math weirdness

Hello, I'm experiencing troubles with functional/hash #include <boost/functional/hash.hpp> #include <boost/mp_math/integer.hpp> typedef boost::mp_math::integer<> big_integer; class A { friend A operator*( const big_integer& lhs, const A& rhs ) {} }; gives the following madness. What surprises me is that I am not making any use of functional/hash (in the actual code, it gets included from boost/unordered_map.hpp), as the error messages don't indicate any line of my code. I think mp_math is not playing a big role here, once I had the same problem with a homemade class (but unfortunately I can't now replicate the same conditions). Can anyone explain me what is going on here ? [test] How do run a specific test suite?

Hi there, I believe I once read that one can specify test suite to be run as a command line parameter. By default all test suites are running, but, the user should be able to specify one in the case there are several suites. I've tried to look up that information inside the boost::test documentation but couldn't find it. Am I wrong that such functionality exists? Regards, Christian

[Range.Ex / String.Algo] Ambiguous call to overload function "find"

I use vc 9.0 to compile the following code with boost 1.39.0 and range_ex. #include<string> #include<boost/algorithm/string.hpp> #include<boost/range/algorithm.hpp> int main() { std::string s = "hello"; boost::find_first(s, "lo"); return 0; } The compiler will complain ambiguous call to overload function "find". I found there's also a "find" in boost/range/algorithm.hpp. Even worse when I change the type of "s" to const std::string, the compiler will resolute "find" call as the one in boost/range/algorithm.hpp and reports an error "const_iterator is not a member of std::_String_const_iterator". Now I just indicated the "find" call in boost::find_first explicitly. Is there a better way to solve it? Thanks! S.C. Leung

Boost ASIO - SO_LINGER Socket option is not working

Hi All, I have a situation where at termination of my program, I am closing my socket, and then deleting the socket object. Note, we are using non-asynchronous (blocking) accesses at this point, boost is version 1.36. In some cases, the socket has had some data written to it, but that data is never received by the connected client - because I destroy the socket before the data is sent. So, SO_LINGER is the socket option that is supposed to solve all my worries (it should wait on close for any unsent data to be sent), however I am using it and there is no effect. I presume because I'm doing something wrong. Here is my psuedo-code flow: /* Creation of socket */ m_socket = new boost::asio::ip::tcp::socket(m_io_service); /* Connect the socket with something like: */ acceptor.accept(*m_socket, error); /* Set SO_LINGER option on connected socket */ boost::asio::socket_base::linger linger_op(true, 2000); m_socket->set_option(linger_op); /* program executes, does some stuff */ /* At termination */ // close the socket m_socket->close(); delete(m_socket); I experimented with m_socket->shutdown() instead of close, and it made little difference. In fact, from the documentation it seems shutdown() is the one I definitely don't want to call, as close() is supposed to wait for data to be sent. [pool] singlton_pool::malloc returning bad address

Hi all, In a long running process on Windows, I'm seeing singleton_pool::malloc eventually return addresses such as 0x100f34b0 (which in this case [according to vmmap] is an address into a 'read-only' section (.rdata) of a DLL which was loaded for 'execute/copy on write'). The system [rightly] barfs at the request to write to that address. Anyone have an idea what could be going on here? Many thanks, Jonathan

Licensing issues for boost users

I am trying to understand the boost licensing in terms of users of boost. Is there any where I can find out additional information about this ? For the project I am working on, we will only ever* use* boost, are there an licensing issues/restrictions for *users* of boost ? Am I right is assuming that boost software license only applies to organization that contribute to boost, and not users? i.e I am assuming that users of boost do not need to embed the boost license in our own code that uses the boost libraries ? in essence we are free to license/copyright our own code in any manner, even though it uses boost? Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Avi

Using iostreams to serialize into and from a memory buffer

Dear all, I have some numerical data in my code that I'm saving to a file. My code loops thousands of times generating a set of this data in each loop step. The data is reused within the same step but there is no need to save it to the next one. Currently I'm using the serialization library to write all the data to a binary file (using the optimization for contiguous arrays) and then read it. I thought (maybe naively) I could increase performance keeping the data in memory instead of write/read to disk. I came across this post http://lists.boost.org/boost-users/2008/05/36235.php where how to serialize into/from a memory buffer using boost::iostreams is explained. However I found that using the solution in the post is way slower than write/read to disk. In fact modifying the code in the post to use std::ofstream and std::ifstream open with the std::ios::binary flag makes the code 5 times faster. Am I missing something or is it right that the iostream solution is slower ?. (I understand that sometimes you don't have the option to write to a file, but is this the fastest way to use a memory buffer ?) Thanks in advance, Ivan

Request for generalized `overview' documentation

Hi all, I'd like to put in a request for an additional kind of documentation to be distributed with boost. Current boost documentation, I would argue, is very good at answering questions of the form, 'How can I get Boost.X to do functionalityA?' It is not so good at answering the question, 'How can I obtain functionalityA?' To make a long story (somewhat) short, especially when one wants to do something relatively simple and limited, many boost libraries might be able to fill the role. Today's problem is providing a callback mechanism. A simple freestanding function would work fine. Yet at some point, I know somebody is going to wish they could pass a member function, and then someone else will want to pass any object that implements operator(), and then ... There are multiple libraries which I might use to fulfill this goal. What's lacking is a way to (quickly!) figure out which one I want. >From limited skimming, it seems like Boost.Function might do what I want. However, I might consider that a future use case would allow multiple functions to get called from a single callback `site', which would cause me to choose Boost.Signals. If I'm concerned with thread safety, it seems like I might choose Boost.Signals2. I think Boost.FunctionTypes might fit in here somehow too, but I'm still not sure. In this case, I'm concerned with compilation time, but execution time is not likely to be important. It seems like the only way I could determine which library fits best given that restriction is to implement a few simple programs. Given today's inquiry, a short blurb like the following would go a long way: Boost.X grew out of frustrations implementing nitz-frobbing in terms of Boost.Y. Along the way, it was discovered that X provided a natural vehicle for standardizing foo-like syntax such that compile-time errors could be generated in the bar case. The price paid for the ability to easily frob your nitzes is memory. X must store 16 additional words of state for every nitz to guarantee an O(log n) traversal of a nitz-holding container (it's actually 2*log n due to the requirement of identifing the internal node with the highest stitzel before the frobbing can start). Note: Boost.Z provides an alternative methodology for foo-ing which adheres to the SomeConceptA protocol (which X does not). There's an incredible amount of useful information here. If Boost.Y looked relevant before, I could presumably decide if I should go with that based on whether I think I'll need to frob the nitz in the future. Presumably looking at the 30-second blurb from Y and Z would let me reason out which library I would want for foo-ing. The performance characterization gives the information I need to choose between implementations with a good O() versus, say, implementations which will fit all of my nitzes in cache on my most important platform. You might also think of an alternative form, which categorizes Boost libraries and provides a `category introduction' to overview them. Given the somewhat distributed nature of Boost libraries, I figure a blurb per library is easier, but from a user's perspective I'm not convinced it matters. Thanks for reading, -tom

I am using Dev-C++ with boost lambda expression, and I wrote the following lines: ................ int result,switchvalue; .............. Hello Boost Users, when running my unit tests on Mac OS X compiled with darwin gcc 4.2.1 for x86_64 I am getting the following error messages printed out even though no testing error were detected. boost::value_initialized<T>, as included with the release version of Boost (current version: 1.39.0), has a conversion operator that breaks the principle of "logical constness": The member function itself is "const", but it returns a non-const reference to the data, T&. Four months ago, I fixed this issue on the development trunk [51355], replacing the conversion operator by a const and a non-const overload. The const overload returns a const reference to the data. (Ticket #2548.) After this fix, one specific version of a compiler yielded some compiler errors at the regression page: Intel 9.0 In fact it only yielded two compiler errors: only for implicitly conversions from value_initialized<NonPOD*>, and const value_initialized<NonPOD*>. Other conversions went well, for example, from const value_initialized<int> to const int&. Now I wonder, because Intel 9.0 is an old compiler version, and the regression failure occurs only in a very specific case, would it be acceptable to leave the fix in there, and have it shipped with an upcoming release version of Boost? Is anyone here likely to use the next version of Boost, including value_initialized<T>, on Intel 9.0? If so, would you find it acceptable to retrieve a reference to the data from value_initialized<T> by using the value_initialized::data() member function, or boost::get, instead of depending on implicit conversion? Note: Five days ago I committed a workaround for Intel 9.0 to the trunk [54502], removing the const-version of the overload. But it yielded many more Intel 9.0 errors (33!), as expected, on any attempt to convert a const value_initialized<T>. So does anyone here think this workaround is still useful? [Boost.Test] [1.38] Handling unexpected exceptions and system errors

Hi, One of the things that sets boost apart from other frameworks is its ability to handle exceptions and report them. While I've used the BOOST_CHECK_THROW and BOOST_CHECK_EXCEPTION macros, I'd like a way to pass if an exception is thrown that we don't necessarily understand how to mention in the BOOST_CHECK_THROW or BOOST_CHECK_EXCEPTION macros. BOOST_CHECK_NO_THROW just makes sure no exception is thrown. In some ways it's an odd request to say "I expect some exception to be thrown that I do not care to specify", but that would work for us. In addition, it would be nice (and I bet it's already available) to be able to say "allow next test case to run in event of exception" or "allow next test suite to run In event of exception". Right now, all testing does seem to abort (none of the above macros are either present or coded in a way to match the system issue. Any tips on how to discover those values, or to go forward when some kind of exceptional condition is expected is appreciated. -Greg

Query on implementing a lock manager

Hello, I am looking for a centralized or distributed lock manager. My needs are simple. I have names for each shared resource, I want to have advisory reader and writer locks on those named resources. I can implement it by having a server which serves all the lock requests. Each named lock will be a boost reader writer lock (which are implemented using atomic operations). Since lock requests come over TCPIP, the client (lock requester) will block till the server sends a response. Using non blocking sockets, the client can have a lock with time outs or async locks. If there is something similar available, I rather reuse than implement it from scratch. This requirement is to have some locking on files that intend to share using NFS and CIFS. Since NFS and CIFS servers are different, I will not get a common lock manager. I do not need sophisticated byte rane locking (fcntl), just a reader/writer lock on the file would do. Also, I ensure that the part of file path is unique and common across shares. This can be used as the resource name across the network. Hello all! First let me congratule Matthias and Steven for the great units library. Just recently I have kicked out my own attempt at something like it and switched to boost::units. However I ran into trouble using both boost::units and boost::interval because a single int cannot be static casted to a quantity. So one could either provide a function like: static boost::units::quantity<Unit,Y> quantity(int aValue) { boost::units::quantity<Unit,Y>::from_value(aValue); } Probably not the best idea as any value would get casted to a quantity without notice, therefore totally ruining the concept of from_value. Or as I have implemented a specific checking policy for boost::interval: #include <boost/numeric/interval.hpp> //! The checking policy for boost::interval, if it uses boost::unit /*! But then I have to say, that the documentation of shared_ptr located under http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_39_0/libs/smart_ptr/shared_ptr.htm#construc… is wrong, because it says that if you construct a shared_ptr from a weak_ptr (!) the use_count will *not* change.

Problems with De/Serializing data structures with dll

Hi, I'm quite noob with boost and I wrote a little test program to test how boost handles serialization of data structures and deserializing the data in dll-plug-in. ( In this case only linked list of BaseImplementation objects, but if I got everything OK more complex structures is need to be serialized). It seems that I have(surprisingly) some problems with de/serializing list properly maybe cause of m_next pointers. I've read the documentation, but not have found help for this issue. Error Message: "Unhandled exception at 0x1029dfdc (msvcr90d.dll) in SerializationTest.exe: 0xC00000FD: Stack overflow." I had to implement the deserialization in dll's load()-method cause it worked even worse with Serialize(...) used in documentation/examples I use Visual Studio 2008 and boost1.38 by the way. I "solved" this problem by not de/serializing the next pointer(for linked list) and constructed(set the next pointers) the list with own hands while deserializing. But thats possible only cause of simple structure of linked list and it will not work with more complex structures. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong in code I pasted above and how I get it work? And is serialization of tree-like data structures even possible with dlls involved? Or did I misinterpret the docs? 2) Independent of whether instantiating s2 increments the use_count or not, I am unsure if assigning (or copying) a shared_ptr that was constructed from a weak_ptr should increment the use_count (see s3). Hi all, I've detected a strange behavior of Spirit using (VC9SP1). I assume that chset_p( "-_!#$%&*+|~" ) and chset_p( "!#$%&*+-_|~" ) are identical. I've only changed the order of the characters a little bit. But when i'm trying to parse a string like "abcd-edfg: " the parser eats the ':' sign but shouldn't. Examples here: token_ = alnum_p | chset_p( "-_!#$%&*+|~" ); // the line above works fine token_ = alnum_p | chset_p( "!#$%&*+-_|~" ); // here the ':' sign will be consumed! Thanx.

One common mutex and lock to rule them all

Are there plans to provide a command mutex and lock? I know there are versions in both the thread and interprocess library. I'm sure each library developed their own as the library was being created. I've seen users ask about different mutexes and lock before and usually they are directed to either of these libraries. It would seem, from a user perspective, that a more central location for mutexes and lock would be helpful. Possibly in it's own header library. Is there a plan to do this in the future? Ryan

[Filesystem] API questions

I am trying to use Boost.Filesystem and have run in to some issues with the API which may be actual problems or a lack of understanding on my part. 1) What is the generic way to create current directory and parent directory relative paths, e.g. "." and ".."? Currently for current directory I use boost::filesystem::path(boost::filesystem::path::string_type(1,boost::filesystem::slash<boost::filesystem::path>::value)) which is a bit verbose. Parent directory relative path is the same with '2' instead of '1'. Further, it presumes that string_type has a constructor taking a repeat count and a character which may not be true in all cases. I would define these functionally as path instances which, if passed to current_path, would stay in the same directory or move to the parent directory respectively. Is this usage too file system specific to be included in the library? Is there a superior way to create such paths? 2) Why isn't there a path constructor / generator which takes a pair of path element iterators? E.g. like path make_path(path::iterator x, path::iterator y) { path zret; for ( ; x != y ; ++x ) zret /= *x; return zret; } 3) I tried to write my own templated make_path but I don't see how to either use the path class as the template parameter or compute the path class from its iterator. That is, I want to use path::iterator x,y; // set somehow path p = make_path(x,y); Implemetation 1: template < typename Path > Path make_path(Path::iterator x, Path::iterator y) { ... } This fails because Path can not be deduced from the use of Path::iterator instances. Implementation 2: template < typename PathIter> ??? make_path(PathIter x, PathIter y) {...} I don't see how to specify the return type given the type of an iterator. I think it would be reasonable to put this in the iterator class typedef boost::BOOST_FILE_SYSTEM_NAMESPACE::basic_path<String, Traits> path_type; which would solve my problem. I was able to make it work with VC9 by adding this to the iterator definition in path.hpp typedef path_type path_type; // import from enclosing scope for clients but I don't know how portable that is. 4) My actual goal is to write the function path between(path here, path there) which returns a path such that after current_path(here); current_path(between(here,there)); this returns true equivalent(current_path(), there); and where the returned path is as relative as possible. This is very handy for file generation to generate # include "../inc/thing.h" instead of # include "C:/Documents and Settings/amc/view/main/inc/thing.h" If there is already an easy way to do that, I would be happy to be so informed. Confused about shared_mutex usage.

Hi all, I'm looking at the shared_mutex documentation here: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_35_0/doc/html/thread/synchronization.html#t… But the documentation seems to be a little bit sparse and I'm having trouble figuring out how to use shared_mutex as a read/write lock. Just to make sure, lock_shared/unlock_shared is for the "readers", and lock/unlock is for the "writers"? If not, how do I lock/unlock it for reading, and how do I lock/unlock it for writing (exclusive lock)? Also I'm having trouble understanding what a "lock" is as opposed to a mutex. What is boost::shared_lock? Thanks! Jason

Is there a type-only based way (e.g. with fold) of getting mpl to stamp out template functions for a collection of types? [interprocess] named_upgradable_mutex

Hi everybody, I have a question concerning the interprocess::updgradable::mutex. My scenario: I have a writer, which is manipulating an object in a interprocess::managed_shared_memory. And I have 'n' readers which are reading the object in the shared mem. If the writer is ready to write, it should get the possibility as fast as possible. So this is a variety of the classical readers/writers problem and I already found a good solution that fits my requirements. But this solution uses 3 mutexes and 1 counter so I am looking for a more efficient solution. The idea is that the writer locks the upgradable_mutex normally (calling lock()) and the readers lock it sharable (calling lock_sharable()). If the mutex is locked sharable and the writer tries to lock it normally, another attempt to lock it sharable has to wait until the writer succeeded in locking and unlocking the mutex. Is this correct proceeding? Thank you Moritz

python context scope question

I'm running a bunch of python scripts from a directory, one after the other. I want to make sure that those scripts don't interfere with each other. Hello, Is there any support for boost on AIX 6.0? Because I got some trouble using boost::interprocess in this system. Actually, the rbtree_best_fit aborts (or Segfaults) when I try to destroy an object previsouly created by a construct. Here below a sample that aborts on AIX 6.0, compiled with boost 1.37: * managed_mapped_file mapfile(bi::create_only, address, size); Message * message = (mapfile.construct<Message>(bi::anonymous_instance))(); mapfile.destroy_ptr<Message>(message);* This abort message is : *Assertion failed :priv_is_allocated_block(block), file /..../boost/interprocess/mem_algo/rbtree_best_fit.hpp, line 1280* The full example is given by the linked file to this mail. I tried to replace the *rbtree_best_fit* by a *simple_seq_fit* but it doesn't change anything (except the abort message).
