[asio] async_resolve problems

Hi! I've written _test_ dummy service, working in single thread (prototype for more useful app). It accepts strings like "google.com" (and "gosdkfjslfjle.com"), resolves them and returns ip of the host. I noticed, that bad hostnames make it think too much, preventing other requests from being processed. So, I decided to use async_resolve approach, hoping that now I will be able to handle many requests concurrently. But it seems that async_resolve is not as async as desired - it feels like separate thread resolves in sync way all hosts. The question is - how to make async_resolve be really async? Am I missing something?

Suggestions/advice using boost::test

Hi, I want to use boost test in a particular way, I'm not sure if it's even possible, suggestions/advice are greatly appreciated. I have a shared library consisting of many classes. I would like to write my BOOST_AUTO_TEST_CASE at the end of the implementation of each class so as to encourage always writing tests. So this is what I've done, included <boost/test/unit_test.hpp> in the implementation file of each class, and wrote the test cases for each class at the end of the .cpp file for that class. In one of the .cpp files, I've stuck the following at the top to produce a canned 'main': #ifdef TEST #define BOOST_TEST_MAIN #include <boost/test/included/unit_test.hpp> #endif and compiled this particular file twice, so now I have a library without a main, and an executable with a main. The self-contained executable runs the tests perfectly as intended. The problem is that now the library is dependent on boost::test, any program that links against this library now needs to also link against the boost::test library (otherwise I get linker errors) which is _highly_ undesirable. It is perfectly fine however, if the tests get included/instantiated in the library but never get called, that's a perfectly valid solution. I also don't want to wrap the inclusion/code for the tests in ifdefs, since this will mean that the code (which is a lot) will have to be compiled twice and this process gets messy and tedious. Is there a way to accomplish this? Regards, Ahmed

Reading boost::lambda documentation (http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_39_0/doc/html/lambda/using_library.html#lam…) """The basic rule is that a lambda function can be called with arguments of any types, as long as the lambda expression with substitutions performed is a valid C++ expression.""" Is there a way to enforce parameter types, so that boost::python can get the signature? Or, more generally, is it somehow possible to use such in-place functions to create the thin wrappers? variant<T&> with throwing initialization code.

I have a couple of variants whose inner type are all references. For example, variant<a1&, a2&, ...> var1; variant<b1&, b2&, ...> var2; Because this variant will not be assignable due to the references, they need to be initialized in a constructor initializer list. However, it's possible for the function that creates these references in the first place to throw, and moreover the inner types might contain unmanaged resources that need to be properly cleaned up on a throw. Also the construction of var_k, might depend upon the successful construction of var_j where j<k (like for example I might need to use some member variable in one of the previously constructed objects to pass to one of the later objects to construct it). Is there a decent way to handle this? The problem is that if, say, something throws while trying to create var2, but var1 has already been created, then var1's unmanaged resources need to be properly freed. I tried to package all the variants together in a class such as typedef variant<a1&, a2&, ...> v1_type; typedef variant<b1&, b2&, ...> v2_type; struct package { package(v1_type& v1, v2_type& v2) : var1_(v1), var2_(v2) { } v1_type var1_; v2_type var2_; }; and then only have one instance of package in my class. Then, in the initializer list call package_(create_package()), and define create_package() as: package create_package() { optional<v1_type> v1; optional<v2_type> v2; try { v1 = create_v1(); v2 = create_v2(); return package(v1.get(), v2.get()); } catch(...) { } } but for some reason this fails to compile, saying that it's trying to call variant::operator= in the package constructor. Which doesn't make sense since I don't think it should be.

remove boost variable names from gcc compiled file

After I compile my file with g++ using the -s flag all that is striped out are my own variable names. I used xxd to look a the compiled output and "boost" is still all over the binary. How can I remove them? I used g++ with /usr/lib/librt.a and /usr/local/lib/libboost_thread-gcc43-mt.a I want to release this as a binary with no source code and I would prefer it if there wasn't boost this and boost that in the binary. Definition of string in shared memory

Hello, I can't useful examples about how to store string in shared memory. I have to share a queue of Element objects (queue<Element> *) between processes. This is the signature of Element class : class Element { ... private : string dir; string file; ... } I used a shared_memory_object to use the queue. When I test it with thread, it is working fine. But when i test it with process, I obtained some segmentation fault because it can't retrieve the attributes for an Element object. it is normal because I am creating the Element object in one process the second can't access it. I have seen in boost documentation the template interprocess:basic_string. But I have no clue how to use it. I would like to have something like : typedef basic_string< string, segment> mystring class Element { ... private : mystring dir; mystring file; ... } Could you someone show me how to do that in the creation but also in the implementation. Locale and Boost.Serialization

Hello, on the Windows platform, in my own application (built in unicode char econding) I am experiencing this problem with Boost 1.38: if I change the locale before loading an xml archive, then the application will hang in the loading of the archive file. I must add that this only occurs in a Release build on Windows Vista, but it never occurs on Windows XP. Also, if I run the application on Vista with the Compatibility Mode set to Windows XP SP2, it does work and does not hang while loading the archive. I tryed to get a stack trace with a ReleaseWithDebInfo on Windows Vista, here it is: Warning: stack unwind information unavailable. Spirit 1.39 compilation times

I am using boost spirit 1.39. On gcc the compilation times are acceptable. However on AIX with v10.1 compiler, it fails to even compile. After 24hrs waiting, I gave up. Ok I realise that the grammer needs to split. Is there any _small_ examples out there, that demonstrates this technique for a beginner ? In my case I have one grammer and ~70 rules. Take the following rule: rule<ScannerT, string_closure::context_t> identifier ; identifier = lexeme_d [ (alnum_p || ch_p('_')) >> *(alnum_p || ch_p('_')) ] [ identifier.name = construct_<std::string>(arg1, arg2) ] ; What is the technique for converting it into a grammer, that is separately compiled ? Also how would I reference it again, without including the header file, from another rule dotPath = ( str_p(".") >> +( str_p("/") >> identifier ) ) [ dotPath.name = construct_<std::string>(arg1, arg2) ] ; Any help would greatly appreciated. [Asio] How do I dynamically select a port?

Hi All I'm new to Asio, and not a tcp/ip expert either, so if I'm approaching this all wrong then please tell me. I have two process on one machine, one of which streams a file to the other. In fact there may be several 'others', but one other will suffice to phrase the question. I need to dynamically select port numbers on which to stream the files to these other processes, based on whether that port number is available, and once the viability of using a particular port is established that port number can be communicated to the other process(es) by other means. So, the code sequence I have is this. At what point can I detect that use of this particular port number is ok? Is it appropriate to use from_string("127.0.0.1"), or should I use some other form for local sockets? Supposing I have 4 or 5 mutually exclusive overloads of a function using enable_if as a function parameter with a default argument, is there any way for me to provide an additional version of this function that handles every other case, without manually combining all the previous cases and using another enable_if? I am having a linking issue with Boost.Test on my Mac OS X 10.5. Creating a managed_mapped_file

Hello, I would like to create a managed_mapped_file which should contain a certain number of elements[n] of a certain size [k], therefore the required size which I would like to use is n*k (size of element * number of elements). But when the file is created [new bip::managed_mapped_file (bip::create_only, fileName, n*k);] besides the elements which I would like to placed in this file, a segment manager<http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_39_0/doc/html/interprocess/architecture.htm…> is also placed there and occupies an uncertain space [http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_39_0/doc/html/interprocess/architecture.htm…] I would like to know how much memory (size of file) shall I require in the C-tor so that my file will have enough space for n elements of size k, and be as compact as possible. I got a transfer problem and can't find any clue, I'm posting here as a last resort. If someone has a little time to point out my mistakes I'll be really gratefull ! I am using Dev-C++ with lambda expression and building a DLL. In Dev-C++, when the program is used as a exe.It works fine. But I want to make it a class (i.e.classA in the following)in a DLL for other exes to use it. And the error occured: In dll.cpp: ................ void classA::a() ......................... (while_loop(bind(&isprime,_1)==false, ++var(result))(middlevalue); ...................... where bool isprime(int) is also a member function of classA. But the complier told me that: ISO C++ forbids taking the address of an unqualified non-static member function to form a pointer to member function. I do not know how to solve it. Can anyone with kindness help me?

Fusion container from MPL typelist?

Suppose I have a boost::mpl::vector<...> and I want a boost::fusion::vector<...> whose types correspond exactly to the types in the mpl::vector. Is there a simple way to go about this? It seems like all the methods of constructing a fusion vector require me to manually specify the individual types as the parameters to fusion::vector<>.

[filesystem] support for reading symlinks?

Hi all, I was wondering whether there was any support for reading the contents of a symlink in the filesystem library, i.e. the path to the file it points to. I saw that back in 2006 somebody submitted a patch that would (among other things) do this. However the patch seems never to have made it into the main trunk. Of course that is fairly easy to implement that myself, but if there is a standard implementation I'd rather use that. Thanks in advance, Nils

testing boost cross-compiled

Having configured the Boost library for our embedded target, built Boost and tested a few examples successfully we'd like to incorporate Boost into our testing framework. I've a couple of queries, though: 1. When we run the run.py script it checks out a fresh version of Boost from SVN, perhaps clobbering local changes or at least wasting a lot of time before testing. The workaround suggested in the website (http://beta.boost.org/development/running_regression_tests.html) - that is passing "--user=" to the script - doesn't change this. Is there any way to prevent this happening reliably? 2. Any executable we generate will need to be run using our command line simulator (i.e. we might create test.dxe, and run using jitccs532.exe test.dxe), how should I convey this to the test suite? 3. Our simulator does support input redirection via the command line (i.e. $ yes | jitccs532 test.dxe) or command line arguments - does this mean that some of tests won't be usable? - Sean

[multi-index] Key extractor for 1:n relationship?

All the key extractors in the documentation of Boost.MultiIndex return one value for an element in a container. Is it somehow possible to use a 1:n relationship between element and value? The documentation uses this container definition (among others): typedef multi_index_container< employee, indexed_by< hashed_unique< const_mem_fun<employee, std::string, &employee::name> > > > employee_set; Let's assume an employee can have more than one name (std::string becomes std::vector<std::string>). [Graph] Defining coordinates for vertices

Hi, I can't figure out if it is possible (and if it is, how) to assign coordinates to graph vertices on planar graphs. I've tried setting the property vertex_index_t to std::pair<int, int> but it doesn't seem to work (make_maximal_planar doesn't use them for example). I'm trying to represent a 2D terrain via a triangular mesh. So far it is easy : I add all the points of the mesh as vertices and create the appropriated edges. But now I'm trying to make this graph evolve, which means adding new vertices (at some precise coordinates) and having them automagically linked to all other vertices possible while keeping the graph planar. BOOST_CLASS_TRACKING compilation error : tracking_level not a class or a namespace

Hi, I want to disable tracking because of the now somewhat famous (STATIC_ASSERT compilation errors). I have a few classes within a namespace in a header file. For serialization of these, I want to disable tracking so I placed the macros: BOOST_CLASS_TRACKING(mynamespace::myClassA, boost:serialization::track_never); BOOST_CLASS_TRACKING(mynamespace::myClassB, boost:serialization::track_never); outside mynamespace. For this I am getting compilation errors saying : 'struct boost::serialiazation::tracking_level<mynamespace::myClassA>::type' is not a class or a namespace. I've included the boost header files, etc. in my header file. What am I missing? All help appreciated. - Benjamin Jacob.

After having used the serialization library for quite a while, it seems that I'm approaching a point where I are seeing lots duplicate code which could be inside a serialization function. In turn, this head lead me to some questions / comments. The use of serialization in my case is both file and network oriented. This means reading and writing a great deal of short-lived archives. Works fine in between c++ programs, but outside that it's quickly becoming an infeasible task. Creating a custom archive could be an option, however, I would need to spend serious time on understanding the code due to the heavy use of macros. The question to be answered first is whether the current serialization architecture is able to fulfill my needs, or whether I should consider using other options. Considering the following two scenarios / questions: 1) Suppose I would like to create a custom XML archive which can both read shuffled XML data (its attributes/values in arbitrary order), and serialize to child attributes as well as named child nodes. Currently, name-value pairs are in the Serializable concept. I think they belong in the Archive Concept. Otherwise, it may be impossible to read XML- formatted data where the nodes are not in the same order as in the C++ code? In addition, suppose serializing a program structure is like a tree or graph, then name-value-pairs do not allow for any other nesting than the C++ code (i.e., it assumes everything is a child node). To allow for making distinction between nesting levels, one could think of, e.g., template< typename Archive > void serialize( Archive& ar, const unsigned int version ) { ar.serialize_node( "subtree", m_contained_class ); ar.serialize_attribute( "use_count", m_int ); } Is something like this possible? To this end, would it be possible to plug- in another parser, e.g., RapidXML? 2) I would like to create an archive that speaks the Action Message Format (AMF). Although I do have trouble finding a clear distinct parsing layer in the archives, I think this is possible to do. I'm currently fiddling with Phoenix 2 and i ended up needing look over my lambda statement to reorder/optimize them. AFAIK, Phoenix 2 is not proto-powered but phoenix 3 is not out yet. (newbie) boost thread compile problems on Fedora 8

Hi, I am having trouble compiling a correct version of the boost thread library on a x86_64 Fedora Core 8 and was wondering if anyone can help me out. I've tried both version 1.37 and 1.39. I describe below what I do and what happens after that. I am on an AMD64 Fedora Core 8 platform (with gcc 4.1.2 and glibc 2.7) that already had boost 1.34 on it at /usr/lib level. I erased that version by deleting all the libraries and moving 'boost' directory in /usr/include to 'boost_1-34' directory. I download the .gz tarball, bootstrap it, make it (with make for 1.37 and bjam for 1.39) and install it to /usr/local/lib. The compilation goes without a hitch (except for some warnings for boost serialization and others, but not for thread). I have both .a and .so files generated and residing in /usr/local/lib and boost include files in /usr/local/include. I add the links libboost_thread-mt.a and libboost_thread-mt.so to point to libboost_thread-gcc41-mt_1.3x.* libs. Now, I write a small test program (given below). It gives me linker errors with undefined references to pretty much every pthread symbol. If anyone wants I can paste all the errors in the next message. When I add the -lpthread flag to the compile, it gives me an undefined reference error with regards to __vdso_clock_gettime from /lib64/libpthread.a. I'm not sure where exactly the problem lies and would greatly appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction. [serialization][python] (ab)using serialization to read/write object attribute values from python

Hello boosters, I am working on http://yade.wikia.com project and we plan to switch to boost::serialization. boost::python is already used (many thanks for that fantastic piece of code). Let me explain the current state first. We use custom serialization interface: each class registers various attributes of objects; at serialization, archive of pointers to the attributes associated with attribute names is created and serialized to XML (and vice versa for deserialization). Boost.python is used to wrap c++ objects in python. Each wrapper class defined __getattr__ and __setattr__; if called, the wrapper: 1. Checks that the underlying c++ object has an associated archive of attributes created. 2. Gets/sets the value of the attribute based on its registered name (because of current limitations, the value is passed to the archive as string) The advantage is that there is no need to wrap every single class in python, just a few top-level classes; and access to all other attributes of the derived types is automatically provided by the serialization framework. My questions are: 1. Do boost::serialization archives keep pointers to attributes, in such way that it is possible to keep one archive instance per object and use it to write an attribute continuously, with the change being immediately propagated to the c++ objects, and ask the archive for attribute value based on its name? 2. Is it possible (or has it even been done) to define python_iarchive and python_oarchive that would (de)serialize between python and c++ types (such as std::map to dicitonary, [] to vector etc.)? I am sorry if those questions are trivial or nonsensical... I am trying to foresee problems that we could have with boost::serialization. If you have some proposition how to solve this xml+python attribute access in a better unified way, don't hesitate to post, please. (Switching the wrapper to py++ doesn't seem very practical at the moment, as it works quite nicely the current way; (frequent) adding of a class or adding/removing attributes doesn't require the wrapper to be regenerated/recompiled at all) Regards, Václav Šmilauer

Hello, I'm sure most of you are aware of the /MP flag introduced in MSVC9. I know this flag works fine when set through Visual Studio 9, however, I'm not sure if it works when calling cl.exe directly. Since it's just a compiler flag I imagine it does. It would be great to see support for this flag in CMake and/or bjam to help build boost faster when using this particular compiler. Any thoughts on this? Sincerely, Robert Dailey

I am using Dev-C++ 4.9.8.0. I tried to make DLLs in Dev-C++. Can anyone with kindness tell me where can I get the help materials on making classes in a DLL and use the member functions in my executables? I found many materials spoke on the functions in DLL but few of them spoke on the member functions and classes in DLL. Although the platform gives the skeleton of a C++ DLL,i.e. dllmain.cpp, dll.h,I can not understand it. The help files in Dev-C++ did not explain it explicitly. Maybe a step_by_step turial is useful. I know that is not quite appropriate to ask such question in this area. But after several days of asking problems, I found there are lots of experts here. And I am just a new comer in programing. Does someone know the format of DLL made from Dev-C++ ? Coff or omf ? Can the DLL be applied by Borland C++ builder 2009? If not, how can I handle it? Can the DLL be compatible with Visual C++? Thanks for continuing to help with this. I had the same thoughts as you, and I've looked into that with no luck. For example, here is the code for ~ProtoBufStreamAdaptor(): ProtoBufStreamAdaptor::~ProtoBufStreamAdaptor(void) {} The original error is related to the client (on the other end of the socket) being interrupted. Presumably some socket operation is throwing an exception, e.g. I'm writing to the socket after the client has disconnected. You mentioned never throwing exceptions in destructors - sounds like good advice, thx. Two points though: 1. If an exception is thrown in a destructor can it not be caught with a try catch( ... )? 2. I'll look over the code more closely and see if there are any destructors throwing.

This kind of implies that wherever in the object there is a lock, any function owned by the object will be locked to any other thread trying to access. Is this correct? [statechart] Substates in dll

Is there any way to partition a state machine using boost::statechart such that the main state machine is in one dll, and its substates (and possibly their substates) are in separate dll's? It would seem that this would create a cyclic dependency. Suppose you have e.g. a simple statechart called MyStatechart containing an initial state State1 which transitions to State2 in response to some event. Is it possible to implement MyStatechart and State1 in MyStatechart.dll, and State2 in State2.dll? Since the code for State1 will need to reference State2 (in order to transition to it), MyStatechart.dll will have a dependency on State2.dll. But since State2 is contained in MyStatechart, its type will have to look something like struct State2: sc::state<State2, MyStatechart> { //... }; which means that State2.dll will have a dependency on MyStatechart.dll. Is it possible to avoid this cycle? Thanks for any help, Bill

[Bind] Does not compile with local classes

Hello, I tried to use a local class as a callback function registering with a boost signal. The example below shall illustrate this scenario. There are two classes: class Foo which triggers a signal when its member function set_k( k ) is called. Each object which wants to receive this signal has to subscribe with it, calling on_k_changed(...). The second class is Bar which has one member function change_k(...). There is a local class KChanged inside this member function. KChanged has one function k_changed(...) which shall be called whenever the signal in Foo is triggered. Thus, it shall act as a callback function. Therefore, I used boost bind with k_changed(...) and tried to register with Foo's signal. After compiling I get the following compilation error: g++ -Wall -o local_class local_class.cpp -lboost_signals In member function ‘void Bar::change_k(uint32_t)’: nested_function.cpp:56: error: no matching function for call to ‘bind(void (Bar::change_k(uint32_t)::KChanged::*)(uint32_t), Bar::change_k(uint32_t)::KChanged*, boost::arg<1>&)’ I do not really understand why this doesn't work. If I make k_changed(...) static then it works and I do not get any compilation errors. So my questions are: 1.) Is this a compiler problem? I use g++ (GCC) 4.1.2 20080704 (Red Hat 4.1.2-44) 2.) Or is such a construct not supported by the C++ language in general? 3.) Or is boost bind not able to handle local classes. 4.) And if it is possible to use bind with local functions how, do I have to implement it? I would really appreciate if somebody could help me. I update boost in a project from 1.33 to 1.39. In elier boost.graph adjacency_list had last template parameter 'Allocator'. Now this parameter is abcent. The question is how was it used? In my example there is a Graph type: typedef boost::adjacency_list<list_pooledS, list_pooledS, boost::directedS, NodeInfo, EdgeInfo, boost::no_property, list_pooledS, * boost::get_mat_fast_pool_alloc<char>::allocator*> Graph; as i can see allocator is defined in `list_pooledS`. I am using Fedora 9, gcc 4.3.0, and boost 1.38.0. I am inheriting from object_pool so I have access to some of object_pool's hidden members. Is there a way for me to find out how many memory blocks or allocated chunks there are in the free list vs how many chunks are currently being used? Is the object_pool thread safe? Does set_next_size have a permanent effect or will the double algorithm start being used after the next allocation? If it's a permanent effect, is there something I can call to start using the double algorithm again? Thanks

Hi All, I can't find an answer to this before, so I'll ask here. I would like to read a vector from a config file using program_options. example definition of option: ("Expt.ControlOrd", po::value<vector<int>>(&_pcData->SetExptOrders()), "Expt.ControlOrd") In the config file, the following works: ControlOrd = 1 ControlOrd = 2 But i would much prefer to use: ControlOrd = 1 2 or ControlOrd = (1 2) or something like that. Well, it is missing one thing. If we could somehow check that the datatype requested for this options is a vector, we could add that check to the if. I think that leaves only one problem, that of reading a vector of strings. Please tell me if it is possible to check for the requested type at this point in the code and how to do it. What exception-related compiler options do you use? I do call io_service.run, on a thread on startup. I call async_accept, and accept connections one at a time. So basically I a my accept_handler gets called, I enter the try, then its just business logic and writing results out onto a socket. Exception-related compiler options? Not sure. This is happening in debug (and release). In release I have march=native and O-O3 set.

[statechart] friend state can't call overloaded member functions in machine class

Hi, if one want to centralize all transition callbacks into the machine itself it's a good way to declare the states as friends and call the machine member functions which should (of course) private. But boost::statechart has problems if the member functions in the machine class are overloaded. Then the friend declaration is ignored by the compiler. Tokenizer design question

The Tokenizer library has a char_separator with the option to keep delimiters, drop delimiters, and keep or drop empty tokens. However, with escaped_list_separator, the only behavior is to keep empty tokens. While this is the obvious behavior for parsing csv and similar files, it would be nice to have the ability to also drop empty tokens when constructing an escaped_list_separator. I have a command line parser that either reads its arguments from the command line itself or a text file supplied on the command line. In the file I'm passing in formats for the Date Time library I/O routines, and the formats have spaces that I'm escaping so the format will be a single token, which Tokenizer does find. But I sometimes use multiple tabs to separate my fields so it will look pretty in a text editor, and escaped_list_separator is keeping these. The solution for now is to have a switch in my command line parser for which separator I want to use. thanks, matthew

Boost tokenizer does not work, and shows up invalid read of size on valgrind

Using latest boost version 39 on gcc 4.2.1 on SUSE linux I am trying to load a file, and then split the lines into a vector of strings. However when this is run, it showed that the last string was corrupt. I'm porting some linux software to Windows/MSYS, and I've run into a number of linux-specific file system routines that I was hoping boost::filesystem would be able to render portable, specifically "glob" and "fnmatch". As for glob, I came across this thread: http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.lib.boost.user/5198/match=glob but it appears to not have been implemented into boost, and the link to source code is long dead. Am I going to need to just re-write all glob-specific code into something boost::filesystem compatible? As for fnmatch(), which matches regular expressions in strings (say, finding all files in a directory which contain a numeral), does this not exist in the filesystem library, or am I overlooking something? Sorry for the novice nature of the question, but my Boost experience is limited to numerics. -ML

regex traits for glib::ustring

Hi there, I'm attempting to build an application which requires multibyte character support, for which I'm using the Glib::ustring, and needs also to use regex. From what I understand you need to tell boost regex exactly how to iterate over your strings. [Multi-Index] New "hierarchical" indexing?

I'm using BMI containers with several indexes, notably an index on the parent of each entry. But some of my BMIs have a hierarchical parent-child relationship of their entries, and I need to answer hierarchical queries like is-child-of, is-descendant-of, is-ancestor-of, etc... In another use case, entries have a "scenario" key, where scenario is hierarchical, and I want all entries in BMI A from a given scenario and all its ancestors, with the scenarios being in BMI B (i.e. "cross-bmi"). Of course I can do a "full scan" but I'm looking for something hopefully faster/smarter. Has anyone experimented with providing such a specialized index? At least in one instance, I'm manually keeping a separate container with all the edges of the DAG to be able to answer such a query, but then I have to maintain this "index" separately from the BMI, which is precisely what BMI is designed to avoid. This is also a solution that is OK in this particular case (~ 1500 nodes, ~7500 edges), but may be too expensive for some other graphs with more nodes. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks, --DD

Looking for some help with how to use regular expression library I have a string "!1!" I am replacing it with "\temp\i\otrq92rq40100__db1003.xls" ( a windows path to a file) This is how I am doing it std::string repl=subst_designator+ boost::lexical_cast<std::string>(counter)+ subst_designator; boost::algorithm::replace_all_regex(new_arg, boost::regex(repl),*res_it); Where: subst_designator = '!' counter = 1 new_arg = "!1!" *res_it="\temp\i\otrq92rq40100__db1003.xls" after the above code, the new_arg contains a strange string that appears to have back slashes removed and the first \t replaced with something like a 'tab' new_arg=" empiotrq92rq40100__db1003.xls" I am thinking that this is wrong, because the regular expression should copy without modifications the value of *res_it into the new_arg I am using 1.38 on windows with VS9. Linking to release boost libs form debug build

I've noticed my boost libs are slowing my game down incredibly in my debug builds. I'd like to link to release boost libs even in Debug, is that possible and will it cause any problems? Heres what I've got so far: I've managed to stop my project from auto-linking to the generated lib names (by adding #define BOOST_ALL_NO_LIB), and listed the libs I want to include manually, but now I get link errors like this: libcmt.lib(invarg.obj) : error LNK2005: __initp_misc_invarg already defined in Libcmtd.lib(invarg.obj) It wants to link to the release RunTime, but my project is linking to the debug RunTime. So it seems that I want to create my boost libs so that they are release (and optimized), but link to the debug runtime. Is it even possible to build the libs like that? I'm studying boost jam now but having a hard time understanding how I would make libs as such. Date Time I/O formatting question

I've found the Date Time library incredibly useful for dealing with timestamps, but I can't seem to get the output formatted the way I want. [statechart] Access to asynchronous_state_machine

We're using an asynchronous state machine. You can't construct these directly; you have to create them indirectly using a scheduler. Is there any "official" way to get access to the state machine after it's constructed? Or, alternatively, is there a way to pass a parameter to its constructor? The scenario I have in mind is one where the client needs to supply the state machine with some information at run time, ideally immediately upon construction, but in any case before any reactions occur. So far I have not found an easy way for the client to get access to the state machine itself. I can work around this by assuming that the state machine is a singleton, and setting a publicly visible static instance pointer. But this is far from ideal. Is there a better way? Thanks, Bill

POD boost aligned storage?

I was trying to figure out if boost::aligned_storage was POD so I looked at the header. It looks like the internal implementation type is a POD, but the actual aligned_storage itself is not. However, that implementation type is exposed through a public typedef. Is it safe for me to use the typedef if I really do need a POD type and don't mind losing the safety of being noncopyable? Is opting out of that tradeoff what the typedef is there for?

[Pool] Overhead in using singleton_pool?

Hello list, I would like to know if there is any overhead in using singleton_pool instead of a simple pool object. Especially, I guess there could be some overhead due to synchronisation, as the singleton interface is guaranteed to be thread safe. I currently have some trouble with deallocation order of statics at program exit (I am using a static pool object), but everything works fine when I use singleton_pool instead. Are there any disadvantages (runtime) when using singleton_pool? Thanks! Julius

Hi, I'm having an issue with boost autolinking on Visual Studio 9 (2008), with the boost-pything library. the boost build process generates libraries of the name: libboost_XXX-vc90-mt-gd-1_39.lib and the like, but interestingly autolinkig fails with the following message: 1>LINK : fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'boost_python-vc90-mt-gd-1_39.lib' am I doing something wrong? Secondly, I'm not sure how to do this. Boost is somehow auto-linking to the correct lib for my build (I've downloaded the libs precompiled for visual studio). Does anyone know how this auto-linking process works and how I can override it to link to release libs instead of debug? Thanks! -John

how to link libraries in Jamroot?

Hello, I am not very experienced with boost. I try to learn how to use the boost.thread library. After early bjam compilation errors (undefined references, because the boost_thread library was not linked), I found that this Jamroot creates my executable successfully: exe threadtest : threadtest.cpp : <library>/usr/lib/libboost_thread-gcc42-mt-1_34_1.so.1.34.1 ; Is it possible to simplify the <library> parameter to something like "boost_thread"? The reason is that I am developing on different systems with different boost versions, so that I don't want to hardcode the library version in the Jamroot. I thought that the boost.build system should be smart enough that it finds the appropriate library file if you only tell it "use the thread library please". How can I make the Jamroot independent from the boost installation and, more importantly, from the operation system? Best wishes, A. Kalaghan

[array] GCC 4.2 warnings with array initialization

Hi all, When building with boost 1.36 and GCC 4.2 under Xcode, the following code produces a warning: boost::array<int, 2> warningArray = { 1, 2 }; warning: missing braces around initializer for 'int [2]' We see no warnings with GCG 4.0. We have a zero warning tolerance. All warnings are counted as errors. The boost::array documentation indicates that the single brace approach should work for conforming compilers, according to 8.5.1 (11) of the Standard. So does that mean that GCC 4.2 is non-conforming? Sure enough, when I change the code to include a second set of braces, the warning is gone: boost::array<int, 2> noWarningArray = { { 1, 2 } }; But this is a problem as we move to GCC 4.2 because a) we use initialized arrays all over the place, so this means a lot of little changes, and b) requiring an extra set of braces is counter intuitive and irritating at best. I don't like the idea of making the above code changes, and I don't want to globally disable the warning because it might be useful for other code. Does anyone have a better solution? Why can I not put a break in this part of asio sample code?

Hi, I am using the async_tcp_echo_server.cpp<http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_39_0/doc/html/boost_asio/example/echo/async…>sample code to understand asio. when I am tracing code in visual studio, it doeasn't let me put a breakpoint inside start() function in session class. Will it be run in another thread? is that the reason for not being able to put a breakpoint? Though it seems I can put breakpints for other codes that run in other threads... Why can I not put here? I tried to break at the point calling this function and step into from there. it jumps to async_receive(...) function in win_iocp_socket_service.hpp file. Could someone help me understand what is going on, or give me some pointers about how to trace such code? I would like to have a variable specific to each thread. This means I would like to use the same variable name and that this name corresponds to different instances in different threads. For example, I would like to build a log stream that writes in different files in different threads. For example I would like to have a variable "flog" that behaves like a std::ostream: flog << "hello world!" ; I have found the two following solutions based on the use of boost::thread_specific_ptr but I am not fully satisfied with them: boost::thread_specific_ptr<std::ofstream> flogs ; // first solution using a function std::ostream &flog() { return *flogs.get() ; } // but I then have to add () after flog: flog() << "hello world!" ; // second solution using a macro #define flog flog() // but macros are not very recommended in C++. Any other idea that would allow me to write flog << "hello world!" like with std::cout? Note that I also tried to write a class derived from ostream with only one instance flog. This class had a special stream buffer using a thread specific pointer. However, the flog instance stores some informations like the precision of real numbers (flog << setprecision(10) for example) and the output of one thread can then interfere with the output of other threads... Some of Boost Regex++ not recognized

<hoping this isn't a double post. Had some trouble with connection first time> I really appreciate the work done on the Boost libraries. I've used them in other projects and it's always been a welcome relief. For my current project, I'm trying to use the Boost Regex++ library in MSVC++ 6.0 (under Vista) to do some basic regex. I've installed the libraries as per the tutorial and added the Boost path to my compiler and linker includes. A lost of the basic functionality works fine, but I'm having trouble with autocompletion. The bigger issue is that certain parts of the library seem to throw the compiler. [Tuple] What's the point?

I know that sounds like a slightly flippant question, but I really don't get it. I've used tuples a few times, always for the multiple return value behaviour using tie( ), but in the end it always seems to be a better solution to use a struct. Code like t.get<1>( ) = "fred"; is a bit non-obvious, compared to t.forename = "fred"; So have I entirely missed the point of tuples? Thanks, Rob.
