BGL and threaded graph modification

Hi! I am wondering if it is possible to modify a single graph object by multiple threads which attach edges into seperated regions of the graph? To be exact: I have a set of vertices in my graph with index 0-maxIndex which I want to copy a couple of times into that same graph structure one after another. Of course, I assure that there are no resize events during copying and no overlapping. This should be possible, I think, at least in theory, but I found no word about that in the docs of the BGL. [Date_Time] representing simulation time

I am working on a project where we are considering the use of Boost.Date_Time. We are already using other Boost libraries --so many thanks for Boost.Spirit! One of our requirements is to be able to run simulations, and so we need a clock that can be stopped/started/accelerated. Is there a mechanism for this in Boost.Date_Time? >From the documentation, I can't find one. >From the source code, it seems we could use boost::date_time::*_clock classes to derive our own classes that could provide simulation time. Hi, In the zerobugs debugger, how Can I set a home directory so that I don't have to go through a long path every time I load a program? Setting the "HOME" variable does not seem to work. [python] ImportError undefined symbol

Hi all - I'm not much of a python guru, in fact our resident guru is out on maternity :) I'm hoping someone might tell me what is going on and how to get around it. We're using boost python, and have created a plugin = libMyPlugin. libMyPlugin links to libuuid and to libOtherLib. Our python test script is pretty simple and looks like this: import libMyPlugin from libMyPlugin import DoStuff but I get an error like this: ImportError: libOtherLib.so: undefined symbol: uuid_generate libOtherLib uses the symbol uuid_generate, but ldd reveals that it does NOT link against libuuid. ldd shows that libMyPlugin links against libuuid and libOtherLib. Can anyone explain (a) why this is happening and (b) how to fix it? Thanks, Brian

Junctions on NTFS

Hi, we started using junctions to some degree, and it is rather unfortunate that boost doesn't support junctions (boost::filesystem_is_symlink will always return false on NTFS filesystems). We are using 1.38. https://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/ticket/1681 has a patch, is there a specific reason why this patch didn't make it to stable version? tv

Boost.Date_time and leap seconds

Hi, Does Boost.Date_Time support leap seconds? The documentation does not say it clearly enough, and it implies both answers: + The Motivation section says that we should prefer Boost.DateTime to other time libraries, because other libraries don't support leap seconds. + The documentation and function names often mention "UTC" or "universal", which by definition supports leap seconds. - The name "Posix Time" implies no support for leap seconds. At least this is what Wikipaedia says. - The rationale at the end says that leap seconds would be difficult to implement. - My experiments with simple ptime subtraction suggest no leap second support. [Interprocess] Mapped file destructor

Hello, In my code I open a mapped file (previously created) and I construct an object inside, this object is valid and I can use it. But after the mapped_file has been destroyed my object is not valid anymore. It happens just after the call to the destructor of the mapped file. Hi! I'm using the Boost 1.38.0 Interprocess Library and shared memory object. My code eliminates with a remove a shared memory object associated with a label, the returned value is true so the operation is done correctly; just after that I create a shared memory with the same label and the program throws an error saying "File exists", just as I didn't remove it with the previous instruction. I've seen that the made a bug fix in boost 1.39.0 Interprocess Library on the remove; that fixing reagard this problem or is something different? Do you have an idea of what can be the problem? I have a need to pass configuration into a plugin for another package. I am using Visual Studio 2008 SP1 with the Intel 11.0 compiler and boost 1.38. I am compiling with the pre-processor directive: BOOST_HAS_TR1 (though I am not sure this does what I thought it did does since I see boost::tuples is used below). When I use the native tr1 function, I am unable to put a boost::lambda into it (which worked fine with boost::function), I get an errors. Any ideas? I've been using serialization with polymorphic archives from boost 1.38, but I had to apply the patch given by Vladimir Prus (http://lists.boost.org/boost- users/2009/03/45658.php) to get it linking (with MSVC71). Hello everybody! When i upgrade boost form 1.33.1 up to 1.39 I get the following assertion failed error message: Debug Assertion Failed! There are breaking changes in boost.Thread http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_39_0/doc/html/thread/changes.html since 1.33 Interface of scoped_lock has been changed and boost::mutex now is boost::recursive_mutex. error 2039 & 2873 at boost\archive\codecvt_null.hpp(30). A problem of codecvt namespace. It seems stlport hides codecvt's namespace out of gobal. [function_traits] How to detect function arity for functors with member template?

I am interested in tag dispatching in a generic function depending on whether the passed in argument is arity 1 or 2. My problem is that I want to have a generic expectation operator that is passed in a function to take the expectation over, and a distribution for the integration. The expectation needs to support both real and mixed-integer measures and functions. Consider the following functions it should work with: struct my_real_functor { template<std::size_t N> double operator()(ublas::bounded_vector<double,N>& x) {...} }; template<std::size_t N> double my_real_function(ublas::bounded_vector<double,N>& x) {...} struct my_mixed_functor { template<std::size_t RealN, std::size_t IntN> double operator()(ublas::bounded_vector<double,RealN>& real_x, ublas::bounded_vector<int,RealN>& int_x) {...} }; .... naturally, part of the problem is that the functor could have both specializations, so I recognize this might be tricky. I havn't received replies on this, and wonder where is the correct place that I should post this kind question. I got full stack using VS 2005. It tells that register EBP is corrupted in the function boost::re_detail::abstract_protected_call::execute. Before this function, the value of EBP value is correct. Is there any similar problem that has been known already? Thank you. I am using Boost.ProgramOptions to parse my command line options. By default, I an exception is thrown when an unknown option is passed. So far, so good. Suppose I have a program p that takes only the option --help - and nothing else, esp. not a "positional option" or "arguments". I.e. I would like to croak a message to the user if she call something like p /tmp/x ProgramOptions does croak when I call "p -v", but not when I call "p /tmp/x". Question: What is the recommended way to catch unwanted (or forbidden) arguments (not options!)? (I know I can define a positional like --input-file and then check if any of those are present. But that seems quite awkward for such a "simple" thing.) Best regards Christoph

It seems that the coding of boost library is not very clean as it makes the debug code aborted by generating a runtime error like this: "error: attempt to copy-construct an iterator from a singular iterator.". Here are the steps to reproduce the fault: I downloaded the source and install the things to /usr/local/include as well as /usr/local/lib. I test the code by creating a "C++ Tool" project in XCode. 1. Create a new C++ Tool project. 2. Hi Jan, Thanks for your reply and sorry for taking so long to respond. I am a bit confused by your response. I never did expect begin() to move forward after push_back(). In my original post, what I said is that I expect begin() will remain constant and that **end() will move forward** each time push_back() is called. My main question is this: why does end() remain constant when push_back() is called on a circular_buffer? determining the number of collumns in a .csv file

I have been playing with Boost.Units as part of a work project recently, and I am not sure what the best approach to "demarshalling" values in a specific unit. For example, I would like to do something like: using namespace boost::units; struct A { enum { feet, kilometers }; quantity<si::length> some_length; double foo(int type) { switch(type) { case feet: return quantity<feet>(some_length).value(); case kilometers: return quantity<kilometers>(some_length).value(); } } }; This approach is necessary for passing values to external libraries which do not (and probably will never) use Boost.Units. Platform: Windows XP Pro Boost version: 1.38 1.39 (BoostPro binary release) try { boost::filesystem::create_directory ("C:\Program Files\hello123"); } catch (const boost::filesystem::basic_filesystem_error<char*>& ) { std::cerr << "Directory creation failed" << std::endl; } The above code crashes if user doesn't have root permission. I assume some exception is being thrown as catch (...) catches whatevers being thrown. The documentation says "Throws: basic_filesystem_error<Path> if Effects fails for any reason other than because the directory already exists." The requested directory "C:\Program Files\hello123" doesn't exist, so I should have caught a boost::filesystem::basic_filesystem_error. Is this a known issue or am I the only one seeing this? thanks, john

Why boost::asio doesn't work???

I'm starting using Boost::Asio. I tried to write a simple class to send and receive asynchronously UDP datagrams, following the boost::asio tutorial. The class compiles fine, but it's not working and comes out with an exception about a mutex (which shouldn't be involved I guess). Basically there are two methods: one starts an async_receive_from and the other send packets asynchronously. I first start the receiver, then I try to send a packet to localhost (127.0.0.1). getting a handle to another connection?

Hi, I need to send ip information of a client to the other one (as they will connect to each other directly now). I used async echo server sample <http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_39_0/doc/html/boost_asio/example/echo/async…>as a starting point. I guess sessions are recorded in io_service instance, since in the server constructor when we create session, we pass io_service to it. session* new_session = new session(io_service_); Can I get information of connected sessions from io_service? (or any other recommendations on how to better design it?) To expand my question: I am implementing a chat server, but the chats will not go over the server (is it a bad idea?). many clients connects, I keep their status (online or not) in a database. when A wants to talk to B, I need to pass request to B, how can I get a handle to my connection to B while I am in the instance of session with A? I am still not sure I understand io_service concept. Is this proactor thing similar to observer pattern? When we pass io_service as a parameter to something, are we registering it to be observed in io_service? Hi: I am working on a project whereby I need the date in the format yyyy-mm-dd (iso format). Am I write in thinking that the boost::Gregorian::to_Iso_string function will do this for me given a date as it's argument? I seem to have some discrepancies between the Embarcadero c++ 2009 implementation of that function and what I think should be happening having used the ms vc++ built version. Any help appreciated. A lambda and boost function problem. Can any one with kindness help me?

I am using Dev-C++ 4.9.8.0 and lambda expression. I builded a class and put it into a dll made by myself. The dll will be used by else's programs which contain the functions that I do not know. Help with updating PowerDNS to boost for easier windows compilation

Hi all, I'm in the process of updating the 2.9.22 source of PowerDNS to be a bit more "Windows Friendly" and building it with Visual C++ 8 (2008). However, I'm having some issues I could use a hand with. Specifically, the authors of powerdns define their own following types #ifdef NEED_POSIX_TYPEDEF typedef unsigned char uint8_t; typedef unsigned short int uint16_t; typedef unsigned int uint32_t; typedef unsigned long long uint64_t; #endif These types are used extensively in the code. Rather than prefix each reference with the boost:: namspace, I would like to make boot the standard namespace for these data types. Everything includes the header file with the definition above, is there a way for me to do this? I haven't done C and C++ in 9 years, and even then only on very small projects and small patches, so your help is greatly appreciated. UTF-16

Hi everyone, I did a bit of googling to see if Boost 1.39 as any portable support for UTF-16 encoded strings, but I did not find any. I'm currently using wxWidgets in my application, and I need a decent string object to use. I know that wxWidgets has UTF-16 string support through wxString, however I do not want to expose this object in my interfaces. I want to remain as abstracted away from wxWidgets as possible. Having said that, if someone could tell me if there is any existing UTF-16 string support in Boost, I'd appreciate it. I did not find anything in the vault, sandbox, or trunk in Boost. If boost has no such string object, could someone give me a head start on where to look? Thanks.

[Signals] Another performance discussion

Hi, I see that there's already been some discussion concerning the performance of the signals library, it's fairly old though so I hope nobody minds me brining it up in a new thread. We use signals fairly extensively and have seen it coming in fairly high in our profiling sessions. I did a search on the mailing list and found a discussion from 2005 on the performance of the library, results at that time showed a vector with boost::function being about 100 times faster than boost::signals. Our tests shows that this still very much holds true. I suspect there difference is considerably worse on in order RISC processors. I think it would be nice if either the manual states that performance isn't one of the design goals of boost::signals, or that the interface allows the application programmer greater controll over implementation details which affects performance. I saw in one discussion going ( although once again, an old one ) that boost::signals use list as the container of slots instead of for example vector. This is understandable for the general case since otherwise connecting / disconnecting slots would be very expensive on large collections. However one use case which I'd think is very very frequent ( which resembles ours ), is to have fairly few slots connected and a somewhat constant collection, in this case one would rather have the expensive connection management and instead have the better cache locality and invocation performance. Blocking / unblocking slots is another feature which while useful for a lot of people perhaps should be optional. I don't know exactly how blocking / unblocking slots are implemented, but perhaps simply an added iterator which doesn't respect the blocked status could be easily added and a matching slot invocation function.

From my experience building software on MacOSX, I suspect that the problem is that you have not correctly defined an environment variable or something like that. If you write a line like "#include <boost/ blah>" and the compiler either cannot correctly resolve 'boost' or if the symbol resolves in such a way that an invalid file specification is created, then you might get the kind of error message that you are seeing. Another possibility -- if you have code left over from Windoze, look for backslashes in file specs. MacOSX is a Unix-like system that requires SLASHES, not BACKSLASHES. So lines line "#include <boost \header.h> will NOT work. Ok first I hadn't realised my attachment was removed. So I include the source code below. This is small and self contained. o The compile error on AIX was removed because I saving via a non const variable. ( Note however gcc 4.2.1. on Linux it did not complain.) o To recap this compiles and runs on Linux with gcc 4.2.1 but crashes/exception on AIX V10.1. On AIX I want to compile with multi-threading, then means using xlC_r. Using bjam threading=multi Will do this. I am allocating port numbers on tcp connections dynamically, and must allocate and reserve the port number without blocking. Hi All, Thanks to Igor's pointing to streambuf I realized availability of stream operations. I think for many newbies, stream examples would be easier to understand/reuse. I found the very simple daytime_client and daytime_server examples useful. (Examples could be reordered to start with simpler ones.) Are there any other asio examples using streams? If the contributors could add stream versions of chat server and client examples that would be great. I guess using streams is somewhat less efficient, is that correct? (since you have more control on the buffer without streams.) Hi, I am kind of new to multithreaded programming and network programming, so I had some difficulty with the examples. Can you confirm an epiphany I had? - I was thinking I had to use the asynchronous functions to handle multiple clients, now I understand that you can achieve same things with synchoronous ones w/ threads and you can write equally efficient code?. (It is only a different pattern; some people find the code more manageable the async way, since they don't need to handle threads themselves.) Is this new understanding true? - If no (if there is some efficiency difference), is it significant? (Otherwise, for the initial prototype of our software, I may use still use synchronous sockets w/ threads, since I am still not very comfortable with async.) Hello list, I have a set of inherited classes as follows: client [parent of] stream [parent of] parser [parent of] grammar When I perform the following call: boost::asio::async_read_until( socket_, streambuf_, stream::parse(), boost::bind( &client::handle_read, this, boost::asio::placeholders::error, boost::asio::placeholders::bytes_transferred ) ); The xml::parser::operator() call for the match condition is a copy of the classes: parser [parent of] grammar I need to know if someone could suggest a client way for me to use (shared) pointers to the classes so that the xml::parser::operator() can keep its state changes over successive calls for async_read_until. Statechart compile error on OS X

I'm trying to use Boost.Statechart in an iPhone development project. When I build the Hello World example in a .mm file (Objective C++) I get an error "error: no class template named 'rebind' in 'struct Machine'". If, in the same project, I build the statemachine in a .cpp file (C++) and call a C function from a .mm file it works perfectly. Is there a compiler flag or project setting that I need to change to get the state machine to work from a .mm file? I would really like the state machine to be a member of an Objective C class.

Using boost::asio::async_write to stream out data

My app writes out a large amount of data to a socket, in a loop, in pieces, say 8kb at a time. I'd like to switch from using Socket::send to use asio::async_write. At a high level, what do I need to do? From my reading, I think I need to: 1. Call async_write instead of send 2. Ensure that my buffers have the correct lifetime - today since my writes are synchronous I re-use the same buffer over and over again - so instead, should I make a new buffer for each write? Whats a good way to ensure the buffer has the correct lifetime, e.g. how do I delete it once its been written out? 3. I understand I can't call async_write again before the first one has been completed (since I don't want my 8kb chunks interleaved), so should I maintain a queue of buffers waiting to go out? Then in my handle_write method should I check the queue, if at least one buffer is in the queue then I should start a new async_write? Thanks! - Alex

Hi folks, First of all I'd like to thank Giovanni P. Deretta for the brilliant idea and implementation of courotines [1]. Unfortunately, coroutines haven't been reviewed and included into the official boost repository yet but I believe it's just a matter of time. I downloaded the latest version "boost-coroutine-2009-04-30.tar.gz" from the boost vault[2] and it seems to build/run just fine on linux x86. However trying to build it on x86_64 gave me a compile time error - "This file is for x86 CPUs only" in swapcontext.cpp, since there is a #if !defined(i386) guard which produces this error. I was naive and tried to change "#if !defined(i386)" to "if !defined(i386) && !defined(__x86_64__)" in hope it would "just work" for x86_64...well, it didn't ;) I'm not that good in assembler(I have only basic knowledge), maybe someone stumbled upon the same problem and has a working patch for x86_64? Or maybe someone can give some pointers on how to make couroutines x86_64 compatible? IMHO, it shouldn't be very hard and I can try to do it myself, I just don't know where to start :) Thanks a lot in advance. I am using Dev-C++ and lambda expression (boost 1.34.1). I created a dll containing a class. multiple levels of bind nesting

I have some code that implements an asynchronous worker model where a client calls some function to request an asynchronous operation and passes a callback function, whose type is determined by a template parameter. e.g. class worker { template<class Handler> void async_do_work(Handler h) { ... } }; class client { void start_work(); void work_finished(boost::system::error_code ec, size_t bytes_transferred); }; However there are many classes implementing async_do_work but which do the work in a different way. For this I use a boost::variant<A&, B&, ...> for each type and use a boost::static_visitor to delegate to the appropriate async_do_work method. This uses code such as the following: void client::start_work() { apply_visitor( bind(do_work_visitor(), _1, protect(bind(&client::work_finished, this, _1, _2))) , work_variant_); } So from async_do_work's point of view, it receives a function with 2 arguments. How async_do_work operates internally should be separated from the client. It may not even use another thread, or it may combine the efforts of multiple threads to achieve the result. So because of that, I want async_do_work to intercept the callback before it gets posted back to the original caller. To do this, I tried the following in the implementation of worker: class worker { public: template<class Handler> void async_do_work(Handler h) { //impl supports the same basic interface as worker impl->async_do_work( bind(&worker::intercept_handler<Handler>, this, h, _1, _2)); } private: template<class Handler> void intercept_handler(Handler real_handler, boost::system::error_code ec, size_t bytes_transferred) { //do whatever is necessary and then call the real handler. real_handler(ec, bytes_transferred); } }; However this doesn't work. [program_options] positional options starting with a '-' sign

Hi, I have an app using program_options, which has various optional arguments, followed by any number of floating point numbers, which are read as positional options. A user just pointed out that it fails with an 'unknown option -0' error if any of those positional options are negative, because it tries to interpret a number like "-0.34" as an option. Is there a way to treat unregistered options as positional arguments? allow_unregistered() doesn't quite do it - it doesn't give an error anymore but neither does it treat "-0.34" as a positional option (even if it is not the first positional argument). Resizing an empty array no longer seems to work. My code worked fine with boost 1.38, now it causes an assertion with the latest boost trunk from svn. Spirit qi recommendations ?

In order to reduce compile times I have decided to rewrite the parser/grammar from classic to spirit qi (spirit 2.1). My understanding is that faster compiles come from easier modularisation available under spirit qi. (As shown in mini_c example, in the boost tree) However I need this to be portable to as many platforms as possible. In my case minimum set is Linux,HP-UX, AIX. So my fall-back is boost 1.38. So how much has boost spirit qi changed between 1.38 and present ? How are defects reported against spirit qi, integrated back to past releases, or is there any recommended patch type mechanism, that supports redistribution of my local boost tree. Or is simply better to use spirit independently from boost? Are there any issues/guidelines that people have found in transitioning from classic to Qi. In my case I made heavy use of closures. I have not seen closures in any of spirit qi examples, Assuming there is equivalent functionality to closures ? I would interested in any recommendations before starting on this project. Guys, could you please clarify whether the following usage of weak_ptr is thread safe: //thread A: shared_ptr<Foo> p = wp.lock(); //thread B: p.reset(); I believe it's not thread safe as it looks very similar to the example 3 from the shared_ptr documentation: // thread A p = p3; // reads p3, writes p // thread B p3.reset(); // writes p3; undefined, simultaneous read/write Am I right in my assumption? And if yes, could you please give any recommendations for the following use case. I have a networking thread which owns a set of net session objects stored as shared_ptrs. I also have another thread where some entities have weak_ptrs members pointing to net session objects from networking thread. From time to time net sessions are erased and I think when at the very this moment entity object from another thread tries to lock() the net session and access it seg. fault happens. Creating a fixed size managed_mapped_file

Hello, I would like to create a managed_mapped_file which should contain a certain number of elements[n] of a certain size [k], therefore the required size which I would like to use is n*k (size of element * number of elements). But when the file is created [new bip::managed_mapped_file (bip::create_only, fileName, n*k);] besides the elements which I would like to placed in this file, a segment manager<http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_39_0/doc/html/interprocess/architecture.htm…> is also placed there and occupies an uncertain space [http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_39_0/doc/html/interprocess/architecture.htm…] I would like to know how much memory (size of file) shall I require in the C-tor so that my file will have enough space for n elements of size k, and be as compact as possible. Invoking 'brent_find_minima' for a member function of a class?

Hi, I found this example: http://net.pku.edu.cn/~webg/src/paradise/thirdparty/installed/include/boost… works fine but I have trouble figuring out how to adapt this if the function to minimize is a member function of a class (and invoked in another member function). Any example of how to call brent_find_minima (or similar functions) from a member function and minimizing a member function would be very welcome. I have to the advice to wrap the function to be minimized into a static wrapper function but could not find an example how to do this from within a member function (I have it working when calling from main). Iterator to wrap around ends of the container. Does it exist?

Hi, Just wondered if there was anything in Boost so that when an iterator is incremented, if it's at the last element it goes to the begin() of the container. And for decrement if at the beginning it would refer to one before end(). The sequence would have to be finite, so just selecting a different logical begin and end really. I'm looking to solve this using some kind of new iterator (iterator adaptor) rather than a change of container. If there anything in Boost for this? Thanks, Pete

I am using AVERAGE and VAR formulas in Excel for mean and variance respectively Why there is a mismatch between variance values??

asio: transporting exceptions across threads

Suppose I have some io_service object in which I call run() from thread A. Thread A is the main controller of the i/o operations and does things like issuing reads and, upon completion, issuing writes for those reads. The writing service might wish to spawn off some child services that runs in thread B. So when thread A says writer.async_write_data() all it really does is call child_writer_service.post() with the data. Supposing an exception occurs in thread B, what is the best way to have this terminate the entire asio pipeline and propagate the exception all the way up to outside of thread A's call to io_service::run()? I've looked at the sample code on the boost::exception tutorial but I'm unable to apply this to the situation in asio, either due to differences in the threading model or due to my own misunderstandings. usage of boost::asio::async_write and boost::asio::buffer

Hi, I am modifying example echo server for my server. I started to get the attached error, and I suspect I am using buffer incorrectly since error started after a change there. I just changed a line from boost::asio::async_write(socket_, boost::asio::buffer("1^", 3, boost::bind(&session::handle_write, this, boost::asio::placeholders::error)); to boost::asio::async_write(socket_, boost::asio::buffer(replyString, replyString.size()), boost::bind(&session::handle_write, this, boost::asio::placeholders::error)); I generate the replyString to have results from my database query separated with ^ signs (which is used to tokenize the replyString on the client side...) string replyString="1^"; while(res->next()) { replyString+=res->getString("nickname")+"^"; } I checked that replyString.size() is really one more than the final filled position index in replyString. Docs missing info about which headers to include?

I'm new to much of boost. It is less than ideal to have to search through boost headers to find which ones to include for a class (e.g. boost::scoped_lock). Where can I find information about which headers the classes are in? It does not seem to be in the documentation, e.g.: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_37_0/doc/html/boost/interprocess/scoped_loc… This is strange to me, since this type of info is pretty fundamental. In that particular case, after trying boost/thread/scoped_lock.hpp and boost/interprocess/scoped_lock.hpp, I resorted to searching through files and eventually found it in boost/interprocess/sync/scoped_lock.hpp (among other locations, but that one seems to be the most reasonable). Is there some place in the boost docs where I can find what headers to include to use the classes? Thanks, Jason

Can someone explain why the compilation times are faster under Spirit2.1 I have noticed that even boost 1.39 references spirit qi, can I assume that faster compile times are due to moving from spirit classic to spirit qi ? [log] More than one module but static linking?

Andrey, the documentation of your very useful logging library says: "If your application consists of more than one module (e.g. an exe and one or several dll's) the library must be built as a shared object." As it turns out I want to use your library in such an application. However there is only one module writing to the log file. Do I still need to use the shared library? Or can I link statically if for example I don't use certain parts of the library? As far as I see there is no more information in the documentation why linking dynamically is forbidden? Boris

boost::mpl::inherit from a typelist?

When I use typedef boost::mpl::inherit<boost::mpl::list<udt1, udt2, udt3> >::type derived_class; (at least in MSVC) then it inherits directly from boost::mpl::list, instead of inheriting from the individual members of the list. Is there a way to make it inherit from each type in the list instead? inherit_linearly appears to accept anything modelling the ForwardSequence concept as its template argument, so it seems like inherit should do the same unless I'm just missing something.

[boost][format] How does one determine the number of format arguments?

Dear all, Please accept my apologies if this ends up being a double post. I am having trouble with posting to the boost mailing lists. I have the need to obtain the number of 'arguments' (the %1% thingies!) in a boost::format. Is this functionality supported in a manner that I have failed to find in the documentation? If it is not supported, would it be a worthwhile addition since it seems easy to add assuming the num_args_ member variable is the information I require and that validation code of boost::format instances is commonly very useful. I have rarely executed error code that uses boost::format that is difficult to test, but by adding a StringTable that loads at module startup and wraps the boost format, I can provide compile-time validation of much of the formatting code, and runtime validation of the format strings at module startup. I looked for a similar example in boost 1.39 since we use closures but none exists. Surely anyone who is using spirit and building on multiple platforms must be be affected with this bug ? On gcc the compilation times are acceptable. However on AIX with v10.1 compiler, it fails to even compile. After 24hrs waiting, I gave up. Ok I realise that the grammer needs to split. Is there any _small_ examples out there, that demonstrates this technique for a beginner ? In my case I have one grammer and ~70 rules. Take the following rule: rule<ScannerT, string_closure::context_t> identifier ; identifier = lexeme_d [ (alnum_p || ch_p('_')) >> *(alnum_p || ch_p('_')) ] [ identifier.name = construct_<std::string>(arg1, arg2) ] ; What is the technique for converting it into a grammer, that is separately compiled ? Also how would I reference it again, without including the header file, from another rule dotPath = ( str_p(".") >> +( str_p("/") >> identifier ) ) [ dotPath.name = construct_<std::string>(arg1, arg2) ] ; Any help would greatly appreciated.
