Hello. [asio] io_service::run() never returns and is blocking my thread

Hello, I'm currently using a serial_port object to call async_read_some(). This results in io_service::run() blocking until at least 1 byte or more can be read from the serial port. If nothing is ever sent, then I can not safely exit the thread in which io_service::run() is executing in. In other words, a call to join() on that thread hangs indefinitely until data is received. My completion callback is not executed at all until data arrives for reading. How can I force run() to return when I interrupt my thread? --------- Robert Dailey

lock-free shared_ptr on solaris

Hello, from looking at [1] i understood that there is no lock-free implementation of shared_ptrs on solaris. When snooping around in the source i noticed that there is a ./smart_ptr/detail/atomic_count_solaris.hpp It is using the solaris specific <atomic.h> to implement an atomic counter. frank@dexter:~/boost_1_40_0/boost$ find -type f | xargs grep atomic_count_solaris.hpp ./smart_ptr/detail/atomic_count_solaris.hpp:// boost/detail/atomic_count_solaris.hpp But apparently it is not in use. Implementing a type-and-effect system

I'm pondering the use of boost to implement a type-and-effect static checker which consists of: 1. a system to define and name annotations 2. a way to declare and associate class members with the annotations 3. a way to declare effects on methods that say how the method interacts with the annotation 4. a way to capture uses of the members in the methods and verify that the effects are satisfied A simple example might be logical heap partitioning and interference checking which in the *abstract* might look something like this: class foo { heapregion a; heapregion b; foo * left in a; foo *right in b; foo *link(); void update() reads a, writes b { right = a->link(); // ok left = /*anything*/ // fails, writing a } This is one very simple example, but hopefully illustrates the idea. Ideally this can be all done statically at compile time without any run-time overhead, even if that means a two-phase compilation process, a checking phase that instantiates the checking code, and an optimized compile phase that might not. If this can be done via metaprogramming then we can avoid writing a new refactoring tool and/or modifying an existing front end. I've been trying to determine whether to try and implement a custom system or use proto or is there something else that might help in this effort? Is anyone aware of similar uses of boost, other libraries, or have advice and/or feedback. Thanks. David

Hi all, I'm getting exhausted with trying to get a functioning test case. I'm attaching my code, which consits of two classses: the second class Route is having a const reference member to the first class Protocol. It seems that I am able to serialize the two classes correctly, however when I deserialize the reference member is set to NULL. What am I doing wrong? Further, I was trying to have save_construct_data(...const Route * t...) to access the private members of the class Route by making it friend of the class. However, doing so results in a compiler error. Any idea of how I am supposed to deal with that? Thank you very much! -- Marco Canini

Iterating over the seconds of a list of pairs

I have an std::list<std::pair<double, float> > internal to a class. I'd like to expose begin() and end() functions from this class, that iterate over the second element of the list. So basically I want the user of the class to only see a sequence of floats. transform_iterator seems to fit the bill, but I think I'm seriously overcomplicating this. I've tried the following and it's not working. [date_time] cannot understand idea behind c_time::gmtime function

I've seen different behaviour under Windows and FreeBSD of the function boost::date_time::c_time::gmtime Looking inside it confused me: (Windows variant) inline static std::tm* gmtime(const std::time_t* t, std::tm* result) { // RESULT VALUE IS NOT USED. SO WHAT SENSE TO PASS ANYTHING HERE? result = std::gmtime(t); if (!result) boost::throw_exception(std::runtime_error("could not convert calendar time to UTC time")); return result; } Under FreeBSD everything is ok (gmtime_r is used). So, probably it is a bug? I mean, the idea of cross-platform library - is that functions will operate in similar way on different platforms. Also, please look at documentation http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_39_0/doc/html/boost/date_time/c_time.html it says c_time has 4 functions (as I understand, 2 functions were cloned :/ ) so it also seems to be a bug.

why send_to does not send all the packets..?

Hi, I'm using the boost asio library to create and manage a UDP socket. In my code I've a for loop in which I send some packets, as follows: for (it=refreshList.begin(); it !=refreshList.end(); it++){ [...] std::cout<<"___Refreshing: sent a KADEMLIA2_HELLO_REQ packet to "<< (*it)->getAddressString()<<":"<<(*it)->getUDPPort()<<std::endl; Packet* packet = new Packet(CList->getMyNodeID(),true); // KADEMLIA2_HELLO_REQ socket->send_to(boost::asio::buffer(packet->getPacket(), packet->getSize()), (*re)); } and actually it sends the packets, but just some of them: it stops sending after having sent about 30 packets out of 150, without throwing any exception or giving any error, while the loop continue and all the strings are regularly printed on std::cout. i'm really puzzled... is there any buffer to flush or any shutdown timer to take into account..? could it be due to another thread that is blocked on the receive_from function..? thanks, p_viotti

[interprocess] shared_memory_object design

Hi there, a colleague of mine is questioning the design decisions in the shared_memory_object class. The assignment operator and copy constructor are private. Why? Also the constructor takes a type instead of a value as the first parameter. In his eyes it makes it very inflexible since the creation of or attaching to shared_memory area has to known at compile time. A few pointers on why such a design was chosen would be very helpful. [ASIO] work/development flow example

Afternoon all, I'm using the ASIO library to develop a simple application and have a favour to ask. Up until now I have been making many mistakes as I expected, but what I didn't expect was having so much trouble debugging the problems. Perhaps this is normal for applications with threads and callbacks. Any insight you could share about your development work flow and use of debuggers would be gratefully received. I'm using MinGW and VS2K8 on XP and with either debugger trying to find the context of the devassert/exception is hard. Simon P. S. I'm trying to synthesize a function type G from another function type F with some changes on return and arg types. What I need to remain constant, are all these additional properties that are returned by components<F>::tag. I want them all as a bunch, don't really fancy querying them all one by one, they sorta look contradictive or at least redundant. The simple approach of passing the same tag to the function_type<Seq, Tag> does not make a change - it leads to the same result as if null_tag were passed. How do you generate a function type with the same properties as the given one? [iostreams] how to flush mapped_file

Hi, I'm new to the iostreams library, how do you flush/sync a iostreams::mapped_file? iostreams::flush(mapped_file) doesn't seem to work, although it works with a normal file device. are mapped_file's not flushable? the documentation of concept Flushable strangly says that it is an implementation detail, if a device is flushable. it should result in a call to msync() on posix systems and must not be an implementation detail, but the flush must be guaranteed. is this not possible with iostreams? thank you

Looks like a container is getting invalidated/corrupted somehow. I have no idea why this is happening. I'm calling io_service::run() from its own worker thread in a continuous loop like so: for(;;) { boost::this_thread::sleep( boost::posix_time::milliseconds( 20 ) ); m_service.run(); } The class that is wrapping the io_service and serial_port objects invokes a post at construction (from the main thread), to start off a transparent yet continuous chain of reads over the serial port: m_service.post( boost::bind( &SerialClient::DoRead, this ) ); After that, externally I call a function that posts a write in a similar way. This write occurs after the above post for the read: m_service.post( boost::bind( &SerialClient::DoWrite, this, data ) ); When I step through the sequence of events, I see the following happen: - io_service and serial_port are constructed and initialized - io_service thread is started (But run() has not been called yet) - The DoRead() is posted to the io_service - The DoWrite() is posted to the io_service - io_service.run() is called from the worker thread for the first time - DoRead() is called from io_service::run(), which in turn calls serial_port::async_read_some() - DoWrite() is called from io_service::run(), which in turn calls boost::asio::async_write() on the serial_port - ReadCompleted() is invoked as the callback from the previous serial_port::async_read_some() call. It does NOT call async_read_some again (for testing, I disabled the looped reading). - After ReadCompleted() scope exits, it throws the assert Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Keep in mind that this whole time the COM port is not connected to anything, but I'm not sure if this will have anything to do with it. Hi, I'm new to Boost and am trying to utilize the date_time libraries. I'm trying use the library in XP. Here's the code I'm testing: ptime now = microsec_clock::local_time(); tz_database tz_db; tz_db.load_from_file("c:/boost/libs/date_time/data/date_time_zonespec.csv"); time_zone_ptr nyc = tz_db.time_zone_from_region("America/New_York"); local_date_time ldt(now.date(),now.time_of_day(), nyc, true); stringstream ss; local_time_facet* output_facet = new local_time_facet(); ss.imbue(locale(locale::classic(), output_facet)); output_facet->format("%Y%m%d, %H:%M:%S %F %z"); ss.str(""); ss << ldt; cout << ss.str() << endl; The question i have is with "microsec_clock::local_time();". I tested second_clock::local_time() and the time is correct, for example 20090826, 15:14:55 EDT. However, when I use microsec_clock::local_time();, I'd get 19700506, 19:44:32.970074 EDT. Shared mutex vs normal mutex

Hello I am testing the boost mutex/lock classes in order to implement a multiple reader single writer model. Because of this I thought that the shared mutex with lock_shared and lock_unique would be perfect. I'm finding that the performance is no better than with a simple mutex. My writer is adding a bunch of elements, locking the shared container exclusivelly until it is done. The readers looks at all elements of the container, locking on a per element basis. Any ideas as to why the shared mutex would be slower in this case than the simple mutex? [asio] poor read performance with 10Mb

Hello, I've tried searching the archives without much luck, so here goes... I'm using version 1.37 of the boost libraries and I've implemented a SCGI, http://python.ca/scgi/protocol.txt <http://python.ca/scgi/protocol.txt> , server using the HTTP Server 3 as a starting point. Everything works fine for small requests ~1k, but when I try to send ~10 Mb through the performance is awful. It takes ~90 seconds to transfer the data locally on my pc from one app to another. I've tried profiling the code assuming that I was wasting time somewhere in my code, but the profiler should that the threads that were processing the requests where blocked most of the time and not doing anything. The buffer size that I use to read with is 128kb. I not sure what other information is helpful to diagnose what I'm doing wrong. Any help would be appreciated. Regards, Daniel Perry

Can any body please tell me why operator[] is defined in case of shared_array<T> like this way: Type & operator[](std::ptrdiff_t) const; It reports compile time error. Consider the code: class Widget { std::string classId; public: std::string getClassId() const { return classId; } }; int main() { boost::shared_array<Widget> obj(new Widget[10]); std::string id = obj[7].getClassId (); // Error } In my opinion operator function should be defined as follows: const Type & operator[](std::ptrdiff_t) const; Type & operator[](std::ptrdiff_t) ; Please clear my consfusion. Hello, I have a class called ByteSink that has a move constructor and move assignment operator. I pass an object of type ByteSink into bood::bind() by-value and it fails to compile. First, here is my call to boost::bind(): void SerialClient::Write( ByteSink data ) { m_service.post( boost::bind( &SerialClient::DoWrite, this, data ) ); } The error message I'm getting will be located at the very bottom of this message to prevent clutter. Note that I am compiling on MSVC9 under Windows. Below is what my move constructor/assignment function prototypes look like for ByteSink: /// Uses move semantics. ByteSink( ByteSink& other ); /// Uses move semantics. ByteSink& operator= ( ByteSink& other ); And the compiler error I'm getting (It's a bit lengthy) is below. Any idea what is causing this? Hello, in the following class: class MyClass : public boost::regex {...} I want to be able to switch between case-sensitive and non-sensitive matching so i defined this method: void MyClass::setIgnoreCase(bool ignoreCase /* = true */) { assign(str(), ignoreCase? (flags() | boost::regex::icase) : (flags() | (~boost::regex::icase))); } but then I get segmentation fault. I know this is caused by bitwise negation (~) but i don't know why. [serialization] Binary archive headers?

Hi, I'm looking at the streambuf filled with data after I do this: boost::asio::streambuf buf; std::ostream stream( &buf ); boost::archive::binary_oarchive archive( stream ); archive << "Hello World"; And I see that there's a lot of binary data that preceeds the "Hello World" data. Looks like custom header information that boost::serialization inserts into the stream. Is there a way to prevent any automatic header information from being inserted into the archive's stream? I'm using this serialized buffer to communicate with a device over a COM port and I can't have this extra information in my buffer. Thanks. --------- Robert Dailey

Hello, I am new to boost (few months). I have a client - server situation where there can be multiple clients (Linux or Window) connected to one server (Linux). Clients send requests and Server sends response to the clients. Server also sends new updates which the clients will keep receiving. The request /response has following structure: struct Message { uint8_t data_name; uint16_t count_of_data_records; // uint16_t data_len; //length of serialized_data string serialized_data; //serialized_data is binary serialized data using boost serialization. }; We have 6 types of structs (identified by data_name) that are serialized into serialized_data. I understand that I have to send two buffers one (ASCII buffer) with data_name, count_of_data_records and data_len and other binary buffer. I have seen example: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_39_0/doc/html/boost_asio/example/serializat… Questions: 1. I am not sure if I should use synchronous or asynchronous communication, I am inclined towards synchronous. 2. What is the best way to send this data across from a server to multiple clients and from one client to one server.I don't know the best way to implement it. [serialization] Stop tracking a specific item

I have no access to the default constructor of a type I want to serialize (and no knowledge of any other constructors). However, the type is a friend to boost::serialization::access. Rather than duplicating a chunk of the serialization code, I thought I could just reuse the guts of it by serializing the object through a pointer. However, this would require me to construct the pointer during the serialization process, which would mess up the object tracking. Is it possible to turn the tracking off for a specific serialized object, but not the whole type ? E.g. a contrived example: template ... void serialize(Archive &ar, const unsigned) { Type *p = 0; if (Archive::is_saving::value) { p = FuncThatCanGiveMeAPointerToType(); } // Want to turn off object tracking on p here ar & p; // or remove it here if (Archive::is_loading::value) { FuncThatCanAssignTypeByValue(*p); delete p; } } It's like I require a remove_object_address, as opposed to reset_object_address. Or is there an alternative approach?

Hi, I've hit what I believe is a bug in boost serialization, at least on binary and text archive modes. If I have two member vectors (of int, for example), and the serialize code is like this: ar & vector1; ar & vector2; I cannot deserialize it back, since boost throws "stream error" if it's a text archive, or "std::length_error" on vector::reserve if it's a binary archive. I noticed that <boost/asio.hpp> and <boost/asio/io_service.hpp> both include windows specific header files through some level of indirection. I know this because it is causing problems with wxWidgets depending on the order of my include directives. I was considering using a mediator/pimpl of some sort to keep the asio includes limited to a very confined translation unit, but this would complicate the usage of ASIO in general. I have a class that owns an io_service object by-value in its header. Anyone have any suggestions to reduce the amount of namespace polluting ASIO does? I really blame this on the Windows API, since ASIO is just as limited by it as I am. Thanks in advance. --------- Robert Dailey

Eric, this may or may not be related to the other problem w/ the assignment operator. In my application eventually I'll want to allow literals of builtin constants on the right hand side of the assignment, but not on the left hand side. So given: my_int my_i; // a proto terminal int i; The following should happen: my_i = 5; // OK (i,my_i) = my_i; // OK (5,my_i) = my_i; // NOT OK For that I have a grammar for the left hand side and one for the right hand side. In the attached file, the grammar for the left hand side doesn't match and I'm not sure why. What I'm doing wrong? TIA, Maurizio

The problem is that, although everything runs well in my test cases, when I integrate the very same code inside of the huge project, it always fails in a segfault. And it works, my function is called. But in only one case... First one : (on the same computer, Linux mpc182 2.6.23.1-42.fc8 #1 SMP Tue Oct 30 13:55:12 EDT 2007 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux ) g++ main.o -L./ -lboost_system-mt -lboost_thread-mt -lareacommunication -o demo : This works well, no segfault during parsing, member function is called. Problem with casting numeric array to/from PyArrayObject

Hi, To start with Boost, I wrote a (very simple) test_that_() function in C/Boost with a numeric::array& as argument. I compiled a .so file and I'm then able to seamlessly use this function from Python : that's for the successful part... Now I want to trace memory usage (and possible leaks) using Valgrind : then I don't use Python anymore and decide to stay in the C world : so I wrote a short test program in C which only includes a call to the function in the .so : /int main(void) { Py_Initialize(); import_array(); npy_intp dim[]={1000}; PyArrayObject* X = (PyArrayObject*)PyArray_SimpleNew(1, dim, PyArray_FLOAT); test_that_((numeric::array&)X); Py_DECREF(X); Py_Finalize(); return 0; }/ I can compile and build the executable file with no error but when I run it : segmentation fault when I try to use PyArray_Size within the test_that() function, which only "link" a PyArrayObject to the numeric::array argument. The manipulation of the data seems to be OK but problem arises with PyArray_Size. Well, looks like the double cast (PyArrayObject -> numeric::array -> PyArrayObject) is not valid. Could someone confirm (or not) my (very) bad coding ? Thanks.

Linking fails to Boost_system (cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)

Hi all, I have linked my simple program that uses boost.filesystem as follows: accesstimer: acctime.o bentimer.o g++ -L/usr/local/boost/boost_1_39_0/stage/lib -lboost_system-gcc41-mt -lboost_filesystem-gcc41-mt acctime.o bentimer.o -o accesstimer acctime.o: acctime.cpp bentimer.h g++ -I /usr/local/boost/boost_1_39_0 -c acctime.cpp bentimer.o: bentimer.cpp bentimer.h g++ -c bentimer.cpp This compiles fine, but when I execute I get the following error: ./accesstimer: error while loading shared libraries: libboost_system-gcc41-mt-1_39.so.1.39.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I have looked in the .../stage/lib directory and the file does exist there. in program_options::parse_command_line - why can't the the argument "argv" be of type 'const charT*' rather than 'charT*'? i ask because our unit tests were giving a bunch of errors because they were written like this.. vector< char* > cmdLine; cmdLine.push_back( "someExec" ); cmdLine.push_back( "--optflag1" ); cmdLine.push_back( "value1" ); etc. then... char ** argv = &cmdLine[ 0 ]; then passing this to parse_command_line. when we compile under g++ 4.x we get warnings that assigning string literals to char* is a deprecated conversion. Actually I agree with the rationale, but this leaves me with a problem calling parse_command_line. Is it going to change any of these values? I know the c standard calls for the argv in main's prototype to be non-const, but why can't parse_command_line be more restrictive?

[proto] extended expressions and assignment operator

Hi Eric, I'm trying to have proto allow me to do things like: (a,b,c) = expr; where a, b, c are integers of different width and they should be assigned the appropriate slice of expr. For instance: | variable | width | value | |----------+-------+-----------| | a | 2 | expr[6:7] | | b | 4 | expr[2:5] | | c | 2 | expr[0:1] | width are compile-time constants and I need to keep them so (they'll be used to compute masks and shifts at compile time). First problem is that I do not know of a good way for doing this. As you'll see in the code attached, right now I'm using fusion::fold and proto::flatten, but this does the width part at run-time (in the example I'm using sizeof () instead of real widths to keep things simple). The second problem is that operator= needs to be const. I think I've an idea of why, but I'd appreciate if you could tell me. Assuming this is what it should be, is it safe to cast away the constness in struct assign? Last question, I've seen in some of your examples that you explicitly disable all assignment operators. Hi, everybody. I'm trying to synthesize a function type G from another function type F with some changes on return and arg types. What I need to leave constant, are all these additional properties that are returned by components<F>::tag. I want them all as a bunch, don't really fancy querying them one by one, they sorta look contradictive or at least redundant. The naive approach of passing the same tag to the function_type<Seq, Tag> does not make a change - it leads to the same result as if default null_tag were passed. How do you generate a function type with the same additional properties as the given one? This is not portable across platforms (32/64 for example). I wish to use the portability of ascii when needed. Invoke several functions with the same thread

Hi Guys I am trying to convert my application to a multithreaded app. Please see code below: boost::thread_group threads; FileThread *fThreads[filearr.size()]; for(int i=0; i < filearr.size(); i++) { fThreads[i] = new FileThread(filearr[i]); threads.create_thread(fThreads[i]->find()); } threads.join_all(); As you can see from the code above, I have an array of FileThread objects, which have several functions. What I want to do, is to first off invoke the find() function which will go through some algorthms (this is already done) and then the print() function which will print the results. How can I invoke the print() function with the same thread ?

[spirit] how to get_position() from a multi_pass<position_iterator <const char*> >

Hi, I use a position_iterator<const char*> for parsing with boost::spirit. Because I need the regex_p feature, I have to wrap this iterator using a multi_pass iterator. I call pt_parse and get a boost::spirit::tree_parse_info<multi_pass<position_iterator<const char*> >, ...> parse_info. Now I have problems calling the get_position() method on "parse_info.stop". I guess this is the case because multi_pass does not store my iterator but wraps it using boost::iterator which loses the position features of position_iterators and only keeps the const char* pointer. I can serialize a collection of variables (floats, ints, etc) through the series: numerics --> text_oarchive --> gzip --> output_file The text_archive step is essentially a stringstream filter. This filter gives the serialization the portability I (sometimes) need. namespace io = boost::iostreams; namespace ar = boost::archive; io::filtering_ostream fos; fis.push(io::gzip_compressor()); fis.push(io::file_sink("output.txt.gz")); ar::text_oarchive oa(fos); OK. Hi all, I am new to boost library. First of all, I apologize that my question will be pretty basic to people in this mailing list, nevertheless I have spent 30 min + to figure it out and couldn't find the answer. So, here it goes... I need to find which library (lib*.a) file contains the "ibeta" function which is defined under boost/math/special_functions/gamma.hpp. When I compile the following simple test.cpp ----------------------------------------- #include <boost/math/special_functions/gamma.hpp> #include <iostream> using namespace std; using namespace boost::math; int main() { cout << "it is my birthday...\n"; cout << ibeta(5, 2, 0.5) << "\n"; } ----------------------------------------- with this command line, g++ -I /my_own_boost_root_path/ test.cpp I get link error message (undefined reference) /tmp/ccgrrT4l.o: In function `main': test.cpp:(.text+0xc1): undefined reference to `boost::math::tools::promote_args<int, int, double, float, float, float>::type boost::math::ibeta<int, int, double>(int, int, double)' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status I know that I just need to put the correct library in the command line, but I can't figure it out. There are 6 lib*.a files in boost_build_dir/bin.vs/libs/math/build/gcc-4.1.2/release/link-static/threading-multi/ I tried to each of them at the end of my compilation command line, in the hope that "ibeta" is contained in one of them, but I failed. 1. Where should I look to find the lib*.a that contains "ibeta" (ibeta is incomplete beta function integral) 2. In general, how do I figure out which lib*.a to use, when I need to use specific classes or functions? (I have looked at "getting started", and "libraries" for proper documentation, but they explain in detail the available libraries, but, not what lib*.a file to use for specific functions...) 3. Unordered map copy segfaults! (STL map does not)

Hi everyone, When I copy an unordered map, it segfaults. I am not having the same problem with STL's map. Using an unordered map is essential for performance, so I would really appreciate any help! Private unordered map in openMP

Hi everyone, I am trying to assign one private unordered map per thread. As you know, I cannot declare a new array inside the parallel section and make it private. So I declared a map: typedef boost::unordered_map<int, int> Map_t; ... I can solve this problem by declaring a map pointer, creating local copies using 'new' and changing "++(*localMap)[iam]" to "++localMap[iam]" "localMap->begin()" to "localMap.begin()" etc... Hi all. I am trying to compile Ghost++, a Warcraft 3 dedicated server program and one of it's dependency is Boost. The following is the instruction on how to compile Boost from the Ghost++ documentation (a.k.a. the readme file): -------------------------------- You'll need Boost version 1.38.0 (or potentially any newer versions). If your package manager has this version available please use it instead of installing it manually. To install Boost manually: 7. Download and extract Boost 1.38.0 from http://www.boost.org/ 8. su to root. 9. ./configure --prefix=/usr --with-libraries=date_time,thread,system,filesystem,regex 10. Edit the newly created Makefile with your favourite text editor. The second line should be "BJAM_CONFIG=". Replace it with "BJAM_CONFIG= --layout=system". 11. make install -------------------------------- Unfortunately you have removed the ./confiigure and make and replaced them with new commands: bootstrap & bjam. Multiple calls to tcp::socket::async_receive fail on Windows

I'm under the impression that queueing several async reads will allow the OS to fill one buffer while the read handler for a previous read is still executing. This comes partly from reading: http://www.jetbyte.com/portfolio-showarticle.asp?articleId=44&catId=1&subca… Although I can't find any mention of this practice in the asio docs or examples, it seems to "mostly work". And it makes logical sense. My program is: - Single-threaded - Not using "composed" reads (ie boost::asio::async_read) On Linux this technique works fine for multiple pending reads. On Windows, it sometimes leads to handlers being called in the wrong order. My sample program (attached) can be called in 2 ways: a) to write a known data stream to a socket b) to compare the same stream of data to bytes being read from a socket via multiple async_receive()s. So in one terminal, receive data using 8 concurrent async_receives: async_recv.exe receive 8 and in the other: async_recv.exe send On Windows (XP Pro 64, boost 1.39), the first program exits within a few seconds saying "streams differ". I haven't been able to reproduce the failure on XP Pro 32, Server 2003 or Linux, although this may just be timing dependent. Am I doing something wrong or unreasonable? Thanks! Pete

Whereas this code sequence using namespace std; typedef vector< string > V; V get_names( ); V sorted(V names) { sort(names); V ret; swap(ret, names); return ret; } V tmp = get_names( ); V v = sorted( tmp ); Generates exactly one vector copy operation, at the call site of sorted(). [boost::asio] Problem connecting to remote host

Hello folks.I'm rewriting the following perl script http://images.rapidshare.com/software/rsapiresume.pl using boost::asio for sockets operations. The code uploads files to rapidshare.com. To ao it it asks for an available server for uploading. To request the free server my code works just fine but when I try to connect to the upload server it gives an exception. I thought that something was wrong with the server domain which is something like rsXXX13.rapidshare.com but the perl code uses the same format and it works. Hello, I work on an industrial application which uses XML Boost Serialization as a way to store and retrieve production scheduling solutions from XML files. I've been using Serialization for years and I really enjoy the ease of use and the flexibility it provides. Recently, I released a new version (say V2) of that application, in which some C++ classes have additional attributes of new classes with respect to the previous version (V1). The new software (V2) can still read files serialized by the earlier version V1 (ascending compatibility), but XML files serialized by V2 cannot be read by V1. I guess Boost Serialization wasn't designed for such "descending compatibility", nevertheless, during industrial production some unexpected bug on V2 might require to use V1 again (as it is stable), without loosing the scheduling solutions generated by V2. From an XML file generated by V2, I somehow managed to remove the parts XML associated to the new attributes (the additional information can be skipped), and re-number some class_id to make the file readable by V1, but this is quite time-consuming, and I can't automate this process since the numbering of class_id depends on the solution serialized. Any idea to make V2 serialized files readable by V1, either by modifying V2 or by an automated process to edit the files (I can't bring any modification to the source code of V1) would be really appreciated. [boost][thread] synchronization fails - why?

Hi, I've written a small logging class which I use for debugging in a multithreaded environment. I.e. different concurrent (boost) threads may instantiate an object of class logmsg, which amongst other things writes some message to the console. To synchronize the output I lock a global mutex whenever the logmsg constructor is invoked. Unfortunately it simply doesn't work. I still end up with output from different threads being mixed up almost as if there was no synchronization. I write 'almost' because if I remove the locking it's actually getting worse (crazy, huh). boost 1.40 beta libs, no longer include compiler version/boost version ?

When building boost 1.40 the libraries produced don't include compiler version or boost version any more ? i.e boost 1.38 bjam --build-dir=./tmpBuildDir toolset=gcc stage link=static --with-date_time libboost_date_time-gcc42-mt.a -> libboost_date_time-gcc42-mt-1_38.a with boost 1.40 beta bjam --build-dir=./tmpBuildDir toolset=gcc stage link=static --with-date_time libboost_date_time.a Is this expected or a bug ? My code use boost::asio and log4cplus. There is any memory write error(as follow) which is detected by valgrind. And i can't fix the question. I have used log4cplus for a long time, and detect my program in valgrind in time, havn't found that there is memory error in log4cplus. This is the first time to use boost::asio. [fusion] "real" return types

I have a problem with boost.fusion I can't figure out from the documentation. consider the following example: template<class Vector> ? function(Vector vec){ return fusion::push_back(vec,123); } what is the return type ? the return type is supposed to be a random access sequence, so result_of::push_back<Vector,int>::type is not an option, because push_back only returns a forward sequence. so I have to construct a new vector from the view that push_back returns. if Vector was vector<char,short> I need to find the type vector<char,short,int>, preferrably without an own MPL algorithm since this is only a simple test case, the real return type is much more complex and based on more than one transformation function. thank you

[Pool] Thoughts about new pool class

Hi! I've got an idea about memory allocation situation. 1) User needs to allocate memory chunks of random length during the program run (or significant part of that run); 2) User will need to free all chunks together, not some of them. I guess, it is rather simple for programmer to write such class-allocator (I've written one). But I guess I'm not professional enough to write class that could be included to Boost. More, does anybody need one? Does anybody want to handle such task? so curious..

I have code that converts, using lexical_cast, some numeric values to strings. When upgrading from boost 1.34.1 to 1.39 some of my float and double test values changed. For example the numeric value 1111.11 converts to the string value "1111.11" in boost 1.34.1. In boost 1.39 the numeric value 1111.11 converts to the string value "1111.1099999999999". I find it odd that some values give this long string representation but other values convert exactly (1222.22 for example). Can someone tell me what changed from 1.34.1 to 1.39. I'm pretty sure it has to be the underling code in boost since I used Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 IDE for building my project with both boost versions. [Boost.Smart_ptr] global_reset (revamp) for shared_ptr

Hello Boost-Users CAVEAT The attached code "works" but has a major design flaw regarding pointer conversion safety -- one which can currently either be accepted (at your risk) or rectified by limiting usage to one-hop inheritance. In particular, statement [3] (see below) is processed without complaint in unsafe mode -- when it should ideally provoke a compile-time error. Indeed, providing a general type-safe solution is not without challenge (read: my knowledge of C++ has been exhausted). If interested, member function 'Common::reVamp' would be a good place to start. PROBLEM I recently needed a 'shared_ptr' that could be globally reset -- that is, any one of the owners of the controlled resource could unilaterally replace that resource for the benefit (perhaps) of everyone else. This has been named "global_reset" in previous postings -- but I have adopted the shorter word "revamp". Moreover, it would be useful if this newly conceived "assign_ptr" could mimic the behavior of 'shared_ptr', whilst simultaneously providing the additional functionality. In particular, implicit upcasting should be maintained. This lead me to quickly reject options like: shared_ptr<scoped_ptr<Resource> > ptrPtrResource; And instead try to implement something like: assign_ptr<T> py(new Y()); My environment is single-threaded and issues like CPU cycles and memory consumption are not significant. Of more importance to me was coding at a high level -- in part, because I imagined that any conforming solution could subsequently be refactored to improve on performance and safety. SOLUTION STRATEGY The proposed solution has parallels with the Observer pattern and relies on 'shared_ptr' to do most of the work. Notwithstanding the code is now considerably more involved than I had originally envisaged. The biggest challenge was getting a multi-step inheritance chain to play ball with the semantics and syntax. Consider, if you would: class A; // base class class B : public A; class C : public B; // and perhaps more assign_ptr<B> b(new C()); // C resource held by B pointer [1] assign_ptr<A> a = b; // resource now also held by A pointer a.revamp(new C()); // not so simple to implement [2] The statement marked [2] looks reasonable. But it offers my observer class a challenge -- namely the need to have available the type information present during statement [1] when re-assigning the replacement resource to 'b' during the 'revamp' call. Note too that the code is also extensively documented. The point-of-entry is class template 'assign_ptr'. This holds its own controlled resource pointer, just like 'shared_ptr', but in this case, as a 'shared_ptr'. It also holds a 'shared_ptr' to a class 'Common' object (aka "Subject" under the Observer pattern). Class 'Common' manages a list of its 'Client's (aka "Observers") and, in doing so, defines the pool. The derived class template 'ClientImp' duly retains the type of its associated 'assign_ptr'. The various 'assign_ptr' member functions pass requests to the 'Common' object, which responds accordingly. Most of these member functions were declared above. Class 'Common', in turn, contains the management functions 'attach' and 'detach' and the interventionist function 'reVamp'. The remainder of the 'assign_ptr' implementation is aimed at providing a similar interface to 'shared_ptr'. Finally, everything is placed in namespace 'xeona'. Hello, I'm trying to use boost::enable_if to customize function declaration for a particular set of template arguments. But instead of using SFINAE to remove incorrect declaration it produces error. [Proto] Building a mpl::vector from an expression

Hi, I am trying to build a mpl::vector from an expression like (string(),ClassA(),ClassB()) To get a mpl::vector<string,ClassA,ClassB> With string, ClassA and ClassB being not enough under control to protoify them with a proto::extends. I naively tried the following grammar struct BuildFlags : proto::or_< proto::when < proto::terminal<proto::_>, boost::mpl::vector<proto::_child>() >, proto::when < proto::comma<BuildFlags,BuildFlags >, boost::mpl::push_back< BuildFlags(proto::_left),proto::_right>() > > {}; Or some typeof variants of it, with no more success and I start wondering if I got on a rocky way leading me to unavoidable doom. Hi, I'd like to use the simple write_graphviz function write_graphviz(std::cout,g); but since my graph doesn't allow multiple edges between two vertices, the graph type is defined by : typedef adjacency_list <listS,setS, directedS,...>Graph; but then I can't use the write_graphviz function anymore (compilation error). If I declare my graph with typedef adjacency_list <listS,vecS, directedS,...>Graph; it is fine, but have multiple edges... [function] equivalent of std::binary_function

Does Boost have the technology to define the equivalent of std::binary_function<double, double, double> eg something like boost::nary_function<double(double, double)> Note that I am not interested in storing any function pointer, so using boost::function<double(double, double)> would be a waste. But I want to use the nice syntax "<double(double,double)>" that boost::function uses, instead of "<double, double, double>". The objective is to inherit from this class and instead of class op : std::binary_function<double, double, double>{ ... } to have class op: nary_function<double(double, double)>{ ... } if possible. Linker error

Hi,I was using boost version 1.33.1 earlier. Recently I have downloaded the src file of boost_1.39. Built the regx library and replaced the old libs and header files in my project. But while linking it gives the error: "fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'libboost_regex-vc80-mt-sgd-1_33_1.lib'". I dont understand why it is still looking for old 1_33_1.lib. shared_ptr questions

I'm looking at shared_ptr and weak_ptr as a TR1 standard approach. It is hard to follow the implementation, but I'm wondering about some specific issues. My set of classes (<http://www.dlugosz.com/Repertoire/refman/Classics/Smart%20Pointers%20Overvi…>), published over ten years ago, has similar features. My class "baro" is like your weak_pointer. I recall a threading issue where one thread is dropping the last owned reference at the same time another thread is realizing a weak_pointer. The first decrements the refcount to zero, and the second increments it again. Is the object destructed? I'm using a specific mechanism to support this and related features, and I don't see that in your code. Is the Boost implementation for Windows (32 and 64-bit) robust and lock-free in cases like this? Random library, discrete distribution

I made a post sometime last year about requiring a distribution that could generate enums with specified probabilities. I find I am regularly requiring a discrete distribution like this - where I specify the probabilities. Am I the only one who requires it, or would it be useful to a wider audience? I'm just wondering whether to submit a feature request for it or not? Help in using smart (double) pointers

Howdy I'm very new to Boost libraries, and this is my first try in using it, so pardon my naive questions. Now for the question: I'm trying to port a Java module to C++, as in a J2ME game to Windows Mobile. I've re-written all the classes that the game code depends on the J2ME packages using Windows Mobile's native methods. Now for the last difference between the two: memory. The game code has lots of new and obviously no deletes, since Java has automatic garbage collection. So for the C++ equivalent , I thought of going for smart pointers, so that I needn't bother about memory leaks and to call delete for all news. I've no problem in using smart pointers for normal dumb pointers. While it is the double pointers that I'm confused of. Say if I have: int **palette = new int* [5]; palette[0] = new int[10]; palette[1] = new int[7]; ... ... what is the boost equivalent that I can use, so that when all references to palette's are released, all memory allocated in the name of palette should be freed i.e. both the single (palette[0], etc.) and double pointer (**palette) should be freed. If yes, can you please show me how? Thanks! Sundaram

Boost release 1.40.0 beta 1 is available from SourceForge: http://sourceforge.net/projects/boost/files/ This release contains no new libraries, but contains numerous bug fixes for existing libraries. Boost source files with types .bz2 and .gz are created with POSIX-style (\n) line endings. Source files with types .7z and .zip are created with Windows-style (\r\n) line endings. The content is otherwise identical. Be sure to download a file with the appropriate line endings for your platform. If you are new to Boost, be sure to read the Getting Started Guide. See www.boost.org There are three known issues with beta 1: * boost/detail/scoped_enum_emulation.hpp, used by Boost.Filesystem, has a name conflict (enum_t) with Unix header rpc/types.h. [random] Singleton engine

Hi All, I have been writing a wrapper around the variate_generator as I always want to use the same number generator, but do want to use different distributions. As I want to use only one instance of the engine instance for all instanced of my random number generator class, I used a singleton pattern. as is my first time using it, I decided to test it generously, to try and see if the same instance of the enigine is used. So not only did i check if the engine pointer for different instances of my random class is the same, but i also checked if the destructor for the engine (does not) get called (i've added a constructor to the boost header file temporarily) and whether the random numbers generated are indeed not the same. It seems my code does not work, the destructor gets called weirdly often, e.g., 4 times every time i initialize my random class. Also, the numbers generated by the two generators are the same, indicating the engine is reinitialized for every instance of my random class. Yet, the pointer to the engine is the same (note that it is also the same if i dont call the destructor in between). I am using MSVC 2008 on windows XP 32 bit. What am I doing wrong? As I am learning, any other feedback is also very welcome.
