Gennadiy and Co, Boost test works great for my unit tests, but I'm curious to see what other folks use for high level integration tests across a multi-platform env? Ideally it would be atop of some script language so it's easy to add and adjust, which may require some setup & teardown in the local env and could differ for each platform. Hi,All io_service_.run() in itself thread. I initial socket with it , like "socket_(io_service_)" . Then I read data from this socket in io_service thread. Now if i want call "async_write " to this socket in another thread, do I must use "io_service_.post( boost::bind function which call async_write)", or can I call async_write directly? And if i want close this socket, do I must use "io_service_.post(..)" , or can I use "socket_.close()" directly in another thread? thanks

building 1.40 with 1.3x lib naming

This should hopefully be an easy one. I'm having trouble with the new default lib naming in 1.40.0. I previously linked to libraries with the following naming structure with 1.38.0, for example: libboost_system-mt-sgd.lib With 1.40.0, I get simply: libboost_system.lib I'm running with --layout=system (just as I was with 1.38 - my scripts haven't changed). Asio : opening two udp::sockets on differentports

I am not a specialist in TCP/UDP communications, but I am trying to implement some communications using UDP packets (v6). I can't use anything else than UDP v6 due to external constraints. I am using boost 1.37. I tried boost 1.40, same problem (see below) I have implemented a first architecture, working like : - a server listens to UDP packets v6 coming on a port ( let's say 65000). - a client connects to that port by sending a UDP packet. - the server starts a new thread, which listens for udpv6 packets on another port - the client should deconnect and reconnect to that other port. Cleitns starts opening the first socket like that : boost::asio::io_service io_service; udp::endpoint endpoint; udp::socket socket(io_service); udp::resolver::query query(udp::v6(), m_host, m_port); udp::resolver resolver(io_service); endpoint = *resolver.resolve(query); socket.open(udp::v6()); Then a function is called that sends a packet, receive an answer, etc... WORKS ! Then, I would like that socket being closed, and reopened on the same host, but on a different port. Something like this : socket.close(); udp::socket socket(io_service); udp::resolver::query query2(udp::v6(), m_host, NEWPORT); udp::resolver resolver2(io_service); endpoint = *resolver2.resolve(query2); socket.open(udp::v6()); But it fails miserably, throwing exception "Host not found (Authoritative)" on this second attempt. m_host is the ipv6 loopback address, "::1". I tried declaring at the same time, a full new set of io_service, endpoint, socket, query, resolver : the very same thing happens ! That said, there is another thread listening on the NEWPORT for udp v6 packets. I am developping mainly under linux, using lsof lists exactly the right number of ports opened (m_port and NEWPORT are opened for udpv6) So what is incorrect ? I don't really understand the behavior and complexity of io_service, maybe that's the problem ? How can I reopen a second socket on another port ? That port being listed by the system as opened succesfully, I really think the problem lies in that section. Thank you !

Problems installing Boost/Linking probs

Hi everybody, I used the Installer for Boost (v 1.39) since download servers for 1.40 seem not to work. I chose the variants for vc 2005 and vc 2008 (both are installed) + the regex part. I added "C:\Programme\boost\boost_1_39\lib" as an additional library path like mentioned in the getting started guide. Now I try to build the example "Link your program to a Boost Library" from the guide. But i always get an error. "fatal error C1083: Datei (Include) kann nicht geöffnet werden: "boost/regex.hpp": No such file or directory" But the the directory is there and contains regex.hpp. Anyone may help me get this working? Setting up Boost.Python under XP, and .pyd imports

Hi, I'm having some trouble trying to set up boost.python on Windows XP with MSVC 9 and Python 2.6; any help would be much appreciated. I started by following the instructions in http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_40_0/libs/python/doc/tutorial/doc/html/pyth… I started by adding the directory with the bjam executable to the oath, and running it from the tutorial directory. I found that it ignores the user-config.jam in %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%, and uses the one in C:\Program Files\_Applications\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\boost_1_39\tools\build\v2\user-config.jam instead; apart from that, everything works correctly and I get extending.pyd and a load of other files in C:\Program Files\_Applications\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\boost_1_39\libs\python\example\quickstart\bin\msvc-9.0\debug\threading-multi I know it must be possible to import extending.pyd from that selfsame directory, because the testing script run by bjam manages it. But the only way I could load it myself was to copy it into some directory that is in the path. Is there any way to simply have the .pyd loaded from the local directory, i.e. from the directory that the main .py script is executed in? (I guess I could temporarily modify sys.path inside the script... but that seems rather gawky.) Also, while trying to solve this problem, I found a number of references instructing me to put boost_python.dll in the main Python directory. I couldn't find this file (after having run bjam), only "boost_python-vc90-mt-gd-1_39.dll". Is that the right one to use? Thank you in advance, Mohan

change command used by bjam when installing boost

Hi, I first install boost.build and bjam. Then I try to make the building boost library a little bit slower by adding some time to sleep between every two calls to g++. Serializing of object with map and multimap. Questions.

I've been having some problems storing and loading a class with a map and a multimap. The map contains values that are simple objects of another class. My questions are below. Then per Boost serialization (and what is shown) my questions are: 1) Does class B need the normal overloaded stream insertion operators '<<' and '>>' to be defined? Currently in my real code it doesn't have these. 2) Does class A in the store() and load() methods need to iterate through the map and multimap containers explicitly, storing/loading their key:value pairs explicitely? e.g. something like: void A::store(const char* filename){ std::ofstream ofs(filename); boost::archive::text_oarchive oa(ofs); std::map< std::string, B >::iterator it; BMap.size(); oa << BMap.size(); for( it = BMap.begin(); it != BMap.end(); it++ ){ oa << it->first; oa << it->second; } //similar for strMultimap } I assume that I don't need to do this, but am not certain. 3) Assuming class B has only the two data members shown, does it need a default contructor included explicitely? Building on Mac with Snow Leopard

Hi list, I downloaded 1.40.0 and started to build on my mac, but "./bootstrap.sh --help" gave me back "command not found" in Terminal. It turned out that the permissions for bootstrap.sh were wrong (executable bit not set), so I had to "chmod 755 bootstrap.sh" first. Just a heads-up if anyone else runs into this. Cheers! BJam scans entire disk for compilation

Hi! I recently migrated all my C++ project compilation to BJam. While it has saved me a lot of hassles, I found that BJam takes too much time preparing for compilation. I ran an strace and found that BJam is scanning through my entire disk - perhaps looking for compilation targets. Is this a usual thing or are my compilation scripts likely to be misconfigured? Hi all, Has anyone looked at supporting Drs Schultes and Sanders Contraction Hierarchies Routing using Boost Graph? See here for more info on this: http://algo2.iti.kit.edu/english/routeplanning.php This requires lots of preprocessing of the graph, but offers 10-100 times faster performance on shortest path solutions. If Andrew, Jeremiah or others have time to look at some of the papers, I would be interested in your thoughts on supporting this or even knowing that BGL might be the wrong tool to implement this with. Exceptions and throwing across module boundaries

One of the problems with exceptions that we've run into recently is throwing across module boundaries -- we hit a case where an exception thrown in one module cannot be caught as anything but a std::exception in a module compiled with different settings (same compiler -- gcc 4.2). This is of course item #62 in "C++ Coding Standards". Since we'd prefer to use exceptions rather than return codes as our error reporting mechanism, I'm currently investigating possible solutions to this. I was hoping to find something applicable boost, but it looks like boost doesn't differentiate between throwing in a header vs. throwing in a module -- for example, Boost.Thread has a few throw statements in cpp files (both in posix and win32). Is this just an issue that hasn't been enough of a problem to address? The approach I am considering is wrapping module interfaces with a translation layer which turns an exception to an error code, which is re-translated back to an exception in the header used by client code. Has anyone done anything similar? Is there something in boost like this already? (I was hoping to find something in Boost.Exception, but it does not appear to solve this situation). Thanks Josh

[Fusion] Views of Associative Sequences

I'm trying to find a solution to the following problem. If I have an associative sequence such as a fusion::set and I make a filter view of it, the view is not a model of an associative sequence and does not support the has_key and at_key functions. I can use fusion::as_set on the view to get an associative sequence again, but this doesn't really have the effect I want as it results in a set holding copies of the original data whereas the view referenced the original data. Example below. Would it be possible to create a view which supported the associative sequence interface? Any suggested alternative approaches? Hello, In visualc.hpp I found the following: #if !defined(_MSC_EXTENSIONS) && !defined(BOOST_DISABLE_WIN32) # define BOOST_DISABLE_WIN32 #endif I.e., disabling MSVC-specific exnetions (/Za) disables also WIN32, which, in turn, leads to undefined BOOST_WINDOWS. So if I try to compile my project with /Za, nothing compiles, because there're lot of places where BOOST_WINDOWS is used to select platform-dependant implementation (eg., in ASIO). But if I understand correctly, the purpose of disabling MSVC *language* extenstions is to ensure that the code is portable & standard-complient. So it seems to be incorrect to imply from this BOOST_DISABLE_WIN32. Am I wrong? Thanks.

Thread Checking Tools

Hi, What thread checking tool (if any) is being used to ensure the boost threading model is doing the right thing? I'm currently evaluating various tools, and non of them really support this threading model. For instance, when I run the Boost threading examples through Intel Thread Checker, I get a bunch of "errors" from the tool. Someone else ran across this, and Intel's response was pretty much "we don't support Boost Threading Model": http://software.intel.com/en-us/forums/intel-parallel-studio/topic/68875/ along with same response from Microsoft CHESS: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/chess/thread/3be2348f-661a-4f… I evaluated "helgrind" and "drd", but our suppression files were getting so large, the poor tool couldn't handle it. Any ideas how I can verify our application is truly thread safe if we use Boost? Thanks, -alex-

Constructing a shared pointer from a const pointer

Hi All, I have been in trouble for a day solving this seemingly simple problem - constructing shared_ptr<X> from const X& without copying the X object. The programming logic does not allow me to construct the shared_ptr like this: SX x = SX( new X( x ) ); Consider the following piece of code: void foo( const X& x ) { typedef shared_ptr<X> SX; SX px = SX( &x ); bar( px ); } The compiler gives the following error: In shared_ptr.hpp at line 184: 'initializing' cannot convert from 'const X *' to 'X*'. BGL - parallel/distributed

Does anybody know how to use the functions in graph/parallel and graph/distributed? I couldn't find any references in documentation to parallel/distributed processing in graph lib, though there is obviously such functionality. Is it the same implementation as in Parallel BGL project (http://www.osl.iu.edu/research/pbgl/)? I must say that the documentation of graph library desperately needs an update.

I'm using a UDP socket to send data asynchronously. I know I need to preserve the data in a buffer until the async write is complete. Can I use a shared_ptr to accomplish this? Basically, my question is, will async_send_tokeep a copy of my shared_ptr so that the data doesn't get deleted? Do I need to use a particular overload of the boost::asio::buffer function to ensure that a copy of the shared_ptr is stored? Two questions on boost::function

Hi, I am hopng to get some help from boost::function users on two questions I have. First, is it possible to extract the underlying functor out of a function? The reason for this is that it is useful to have the boost::function abstraction to move around functors in a generic fashion, but the interface is obviously limited to operator(), so being able to extract the underlying class out of a boost::function would be useful. I am thinking mostly about applied math applications in which functions are defined by more than an operator, whence the interface of boost::function is sometimes insufficient. Second, I was looking to implement a "function algebra" for boost::function (of a given arity, for a start). This algebra would implement sum, difference, product, composition, etc... operations on a pair of like boost::functions. In a template implementation in order to implement the operator() of the result boost::function, I need to access the result type and the argument types of the boost::functions being operated on. So, suppose I want to implement a product operation on a pair of template functors, then in order to define the operator() of the product of the functors, I need the result and argument types. Does boost::function make these types available as some typedefs? Does what I say make at all sense or would you proceed entirely differently in order to define such operations on boost::function? The error in the subject line occurs when attempting to assign a native socket to a Boost.Asio socket. I realize it's not very helpful since I'm not explaining where I am getting nativeSocket, but I was hoping someone let me know in general the cause of such an error, since there doesn't appear to be any documentation on it. More usability issues with program_options: I couldn't really find much mention of positional options in the docs. I'm writing a typical command line program: one that takes some set of optional options and a single required positional argument. Shouldn't the wcommand_line_parser::run method be doing this checking after it has collected all the sets of option descriptions? Can I get rid of this? What's the proper way to express what I want? Hi there, I have a performance problem using the managed_shared_memory and the interprocess_vector. I attached a minimalistic, compilable example that demonstrates this. I create a vector that contains a simple class and I write into this vector. If the vector is located in the shared_memory this takes much longer than if it is located in the process-local memory. The main difference then is the used allocator. But I can not explain it. If I run the attached code, I get the following results: (running on Ubuntu 8.10, Boost version 1.40, gcc-Version 4.3.3) SHMEM_TESTING: Mean: 0.024768 seconds. else Mean: 0.015022 seconds. Avoiding reinventing the wheel for a public api with binary compatibility in mind

I'm writing a public api for a product which will be bundled as a precompiled dll or binary and one of my goals is binary compatibility (if not across major versions, at least across minor). I'd like to implement the pimpl idiom and reference counting for the handle classes as appropriate, but I'm worried about all the typical stuff (exception safety, memory leaks, etc) and I'd rather not reinvent the wheel. eg. template<typename T> class MyClass { public: T foo(); private: boost::shared_ptr<MyClassImpl<T> > impl; }; Using boost::shared_ptr would be great, but this means clients of my code would have to have the same version of boost installed that we use, and I imagine this could cause conflicts in the event that they happen to use boost (and a different version of it). I'd rather not include more code dependencies than I absolutely have to, especially if they may prove problematic in the future. What do I do? I know I'm not the first in this situation. How often have others opted for this dependency as opposed to furnishing their own alternative that would avoid additional dependencies (at the expense of the benefit of time-tested code)?

I am successfully using Boost.Thread on Windows without a hitch, but when porting my program to OSX I get the following compile error, followed by an enormous chain of errors that probably are a derivative of it: ./boost/thread/detail/thread.hpp:108: error: ‘boost::thread::thread(boost::thread&)’ is private When checking the class that it mentioned, it appears that it is in fact declared as private for some reason. Is there a reason I'm only receiving this error on OSX, and how can it be fixed?

Building Boost on Snow Leopard (with Xcode 3.2 installed)

Hi, I'm trying to build boost 1.40 on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard (with Xcode 3.2 is installed). This is the command I used to use on Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard and Xcode 3.1.x: bjam --prefix=/somepath --layout=versioned toolset=darwin architecture=combined address-model=32_64 link=static install This used to give me great universal binaries (ppc/intel, 32-/64-bit). But since installing Snow Leopard and Xcode 3.2 it does not build anymore. Library failing

I wrote a utility to abstract sending a data buffer to a central server with a single function call. I verified it works, and then split out the functionality into a library (.lib). I tried using it in a test application, but keep getting an "Access violation reading location 0x00000000" error. It occurs in the call: socket_.async_receive_from( boost::asio::buffer(data_, max_length), sender_endpoint_, boost::bind(&CommIn::handle_receive_from, this, boost::asio::placeholders::error, boost::asio::placeholders::bytes_transferred)); I'm using Visual C++ 2005 Express, and a UML to C++ modeler and code generator called Rhapsody. I'm not sure where to even begin troubleshooting this.

Consider something like so: struct A { ...? }; struct B { std::list<A> items; }; struct C { A const* ptr_to_item_in_B_items; }; Serializing B is easy. Serialization of C ... not so much. The naive approach did not work because it wants a non-const pointer. Having read posts about the problem it seems the serialization library expects to modify the data pointed to, but I don't need or want that...I just want to recover the structure layout. Possible? Impossible?

Hi, I want to write a function that operates on one-dimensional multi_array's and use it to modify the columns of a two-dimensional multi_array. I thought that this would be a straightforward application of slicing, i.e., views with dimensional reduction. However, my first attempt to do so does not compile. (Please see the attached source code.) When I try to pass a view to my function, I get: error: invalid initialization of non-const reference of type boost::multi_array_ref<double, 1ul>& from a temporary of type boost::detail::multi_array::multi_array_view<double, 1ul> I have now read the section on views and subarrays in the multi_array reference documentation several times, but I do not see how I can do what I want. Get "Native" thread id - feature request

Hello, is there a way how to get the thread id that system assigns to thread? I mean the id that is located in "thread_info->id". It would quite nice if boost could return this value, because for example if I want to set name of the thread on windows using function SetThreadName(), I need exactly that id. In my application I would have to add this "feature" directly to boost::thread.hpp, which is not very nice solution. I know that also GetThreadName(myThread->native_handle()) should work, but if I do it like this I always get a Windows error "The procedure entry point GetThreadId could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll". And I also guess, that this new "feature" wouldn't destroy the overall design of boost::thread architecture. To get the "real" thread id is in my opinion in general a useful thing.

I'm building boost library on windows xp (32-bit) using visual c++ 2005, with RTTI enabled. Then I received a warning D9025 stating that "overriding /GR with /GR-", and after checking the jamfile I find out that RTTI was disabled for boost.graph library. I'm assuming boost library will work correctly with RTTI enabled all the while, and all my other projects are built with RTTI enabled. A particular line in the function produces a warning message. Should I be worried about this warning? Hello, I'm currently parsing some data using Spirit together with boost::bind to set the callbacks for Spirit. In release build I get a compiler (gcc 4.4.1) warning from bind: warning: dereferencing pointer ‘val’ does break strict-aliasing rules I was able to find the lines causing this problem by commenting them out, rebuilding and the error got away. The strange thing is, that when I copy some other parsing rules, that previously compiled without any warning, I get the same warning again. When trying to create a simple example to post here, it seemed that the actual parsing code (that is the only code that uses boost::bind) was exchangeable. It was the number of options in the parsing rule that caused the warning to appear (which I really do not understand). The parsing rule looks like this: parse(someString.c_str(), ( *( str_p('+') >> str_p('(') >> real_p[boost::bind(&Object::func_param, boost::ref(m_curObmect), _1)] >> str_p(')') | str_p('+')[boost::bind(&Object::func, boost::ref(m_curObject), _1)] /*| str_p('+') >> str_p('(') >> real_p[boost::bind(&Object::func_param, boost::ref(m_curObmect), _1)] >> str_p(')') | str_p('+')[boost::bind(&Object::func, boost::ref(m_curObject), _1)] [... to be repeated ...] */ ) ) , space_p).full; The goal is to find either "+" or "+(double)", which works as expected. causesThe signatures of the Object functions are Object::func_param(double param); and Object::func(char); The rule can be copied 7 times, leading to 14 options, without any warning. If I add one 8th copy of these lines, or if I just add a 15th option (independent of the actual line I copy) I get the warning again. My system is an Ubuntu Karmic 64bit machine, using gcc 4.4.1, boost 1.39 headers and simply including "boost/spirit.hpp", which means I get the deprecation warning for that file at the moment. I'd be thankful for any suggestions, since for now, I do not even know where to look further. I do not have any idea what might cause this warning. thanks, Norbert

I'm having trouble getting multi_index's key extractors to play nicely with shared_ptr objects. My small consulting bussines suddenly grew out of proportion and now is way over my head, keeping me working/managing 16 hours a day] I am pleased to announce that the Boost.Polygon library from Lucanus Simonson has been accepted into boost provided some of the most critical concerns, detailed below, are addressed first. First of all I would like to thank Lucanus and Intel Corporation for making this work available to all C++ developers around the world. I would also like to thank all the reviewers that participated (in no particular order nor degree of participation) Thomas Klimpel Frank Mori Hess Barend Gehrels Andreas Fabri Jeffrey Hellrung Tim Keitt Markus Werle Paul A. (3) The library should contain some basic polygon geometry algorithms such as convex hull and centriod Phil Endecott: (4) There is no concept checking in the code so it is difficult to adapt. (5) There where too many warnings and build errors (but Luke fixed these) (6a) The documentation needs a better overview of operations supported by the concetps. (6b) It also needs the details on the algorithms complexities. (6c) It also misses the numerical requirements for the coordinate type. (6d) And tutorials. (7) Some operators are ambiguous and it would be better to keep just one of each "flavor". (8) The polygon_data template class is parameterized by a coordiante type rather than a point type. This makes it useless for integration with existing geometric data types Michael Fawcett: (5), (6a), (6d) (9) T9he API should provide versions using output iterators in addition to output container references. (10) Theoreticall the library would be usable with a user defined coordinate type (metting certain requirements now undocumented), for example a fixed point data type, but some details in the internal design and implementation prevents this. (11) As a major complain, the library is unusable in those domains where floating point support is a requirement (like GIS). (13) The documentation must contain a "credits" section acknowledging all the people that participated in the review. Warning while compiling asio UNDER_CE

I'm trying to compile my project with Asio support for Windows CE platform. I think, I don't need to define _WIN32_WINNT or _WIN32_WINDOWS but when compiling Asio headerI get this warning: "Please define _WIN32_WINNT or _WIN32_WINDOWS appropriately. For example:..." I find this warning coded in "socket_types.hpp" file. I'm using Boost library 1.40.0. How can remove this warning message? Can I ignore it? Thanks. Carmelo

[asio] why no random_access_handle on non-windows platforms?

I notice there's a random_access_handle on windows, and is needed in order to use functions like async_read_some_at. Am I missing some obvious reason why there is not an analagous random access handle for posix systems? I guess I can define my own posix::random_access_handle, posix::basic_random_access_handle, posix::random_access_handle_service just like is done for windows, but i don't see why there is anything windows-specific about random access handles in the first place. Ultimately I need to be able to perform random access asynchronous file i/o on both linux and windows using a single codebase. Any advice appreciated.

boost::interprocess communication between windows service and user application

Hi, I'm pretty new to boost::interprocess but I've been performing some successful communication tests between two applications, using boost::interprocess::shared_memory_object and boost::interprocess::mapped_region. But when one of those processes is a windows service, then I get a file not found exception (I've catched it and dumped it into a file), just after initializing a shared_memory_object. It seems that the shared memory is actually managed by means of a file in disk that probably the user is creating in a location and the service in a different one. I've been googling this issue for hours, but the only resource I was able to find is this conversation: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/488877/boostinterprocess-between-windows… which has not been very helpful since I have no clue on how to use boost::interprocess::managed_windows_shared_memory or even if it could serve to my purpose somehow. When I dig it I see that BOOST_MPL_ASSERT creates an identifier based on BOOST_MPL_AUX_PP_COUNTER() which in turns uses either __COUNTER__ (with msvc9) or __LINE__ (with g++). So with g++ we get name clashes when `n` is greater than one, because the ASSERT macro attempts to create several variables with the same name in the same scope. I guess I could copy the code of BOOST_MPL_ASSERT() in my BOOST_PP_RDB_MPL_ASSERT macro and incorporate `n` in the identifier. Is there a better solution ? Thanks, J-L

ENH RQST: chdir in boost::filesystem

I have recently moved back to C++ from a 2 year spell with Java. The C++ code I am working on is for Windoze with Visual Studio 8. We are using boost 1.34.1. The prog I am working on has to do a few filesystem things so I have started to use boost::filesystem. However, there does not seem to be a way to change the current working directory using boost::filesystem. So I am forced to use chdir, which is _chdir on Windoze. On Unix the header for the prototype is in unistd.h, on Windoze it is in direct.h. So its back to good old ifdefs. Suddenly, java looks more attractive. Ifdefs are just so nostalgic.... Is there any chance this can be added to boost please? I realise that there may be more to it than just wrapping the chdir/_chdir call. There is the whole issue of return values versus exceptions, errno etc etc. I do not know what the current thinking is about these things in boost. [RegEx] Linking issues with boost 1.40.0 included directly in our tree

Hi, we use boost in our build, however, instead of using all of the Boost.Build and linking infrastructure, we integrate the source files directly into our build. We've always done things this way and had no problem. The implicit linking is a bit of a pain. However, now I have a strange issue. I am currently upgrading from 1.39.0 to 1.40.0, and am getting linking issues in the regex library. In particular, the linker is getting undefined references for boost::re_detail::perl_matcher in files where we create boost::regex and boost::regex_match objects. When I look through the source for the perl_matcher template, I can find it in the boost/regex/v4/perl_matcher.hpp include file, which we include within our build. I've also included the src/ and performance/ directories from boost/libs/regex in our build, and the linking still doesn't work. Perhaps someone has an incite into any preprocessor flags that I need to set in order to create an implementation for these missing functions in 1.40.0? Note, we had this working fine for 1.39.0, and I need to upgrade for a bugfix for a different boost library. thanks in advance, conrad

Interrupting Socket connect()

If I have a socket like so: boost::asio::ip::tcp::socket tcpSocket; and call connect in a boost::thread like so: tcpSocket.connect(endPoint, error); It will 'hang' for up to 30 seconds if it can't immediately connect to the end point. If I interrupt() and join() the boost thread it has to wait for the connect() call to finish. Is there a way to cancel or interrupt the connect() call? Thanks Simon

boost::thread on Windows CE?

Hi, So I've finally succeded in building some libs I need for Windows CE, using STLPort. One of those libs is thread. It builds fine, but when I try to use it from a simple sample I get some link errors (see below). What I wonder is if threads is even possible to use under WinCE? Looking at the code, theres only a folder for pthreads and one for win32, but inside the win32 files there's some UNDER_CE switches. Anyone had success using it under wince? [serialiization] Database archive

Hi everyone Currently, I am planning to apply the boost serialization library to my entity objects for allowing me to serialize them to XML for transmission over SOAP. I would also very much appreciate the possibility to store these entities in a relational database, if possible without any additional effort. Thinking of this, the possibility of creating an sqlite implementation of the archive class came to my mind. Is the archive interface suitable for such a task, thinking of issues like primary key management and so on? Or does such an implementation already exist? I don't really know wether this is a Boost.Thread related question or a general c++ related, but since I couldn't decide I will disturb you first ;) Maybe you have the patience to look at this minimalistic framework (I stripped almost all functionality): http://pastebin.com/m7dcc833f This compiles well and running it gives me the expected: # starting # This is A # This is B # shutting down The problem is, that I want to run the kernels as threads. Have (again) a look at the highlighted lines (27-29): If I replace 27 by 28+29 I (expectedly) get a compile error since Kernel is abstract. However if I make it non-abstract by implementing the operator() in it, it is this function (namely Kernel::operator()) which get's called instead of TestKernel::operator(). Note that Program will not be able to know about the concrete child classes of Kernel so it cannot dynamic_cast<ConcretKernel*> the pointers and I don't want to use maschine-specific ways like __decltype. I imagine this is merely the old non-static member function pointer problem, however I tried dozens of ways to get around this and the only thing that worked was to add a ConcreteKernel::run() { thread t(*this); t.join(); } to *each* single child class of Kernel which gets rather un- managable with 50 and more descendants. When I generating parse tree and dump it using the built-in tree-to-xml function, even from a simple grammar, I wonder why it prints out the leaf node twice. Boost Functionality question: Explicit dynamic library loading

Hello, I'm curious to know whether boost has support for explicitly loading shared libraries in a cross-platform fashion. I have done my own search of the 1.40.0 boost code base and could not find any abstraction around dlopen,dlsym,dlclose and their equivalents on windows. bad_any_cast being thrown but no idea why

I have been pulling my hair out over this bug for a day or two now. Here's the synopsis. I have a boost::any object which is storing a std::string. Any test I do to check if indeed the any object is holding onto a std::string object verifies what I already know. For instance, the following function always returns true for my boost::any object: bool is_string(const boost::any& operand) { return ( operand.type() == typeid(std::string) ); } Also if I just print out the typeinfo information for the boost::any object is also shows that its holding onto a std::string: std::stringstream ss; ss << "any object: " << obj.type().name() << ", a string: " << typeid(std::string).name(); yields, any object: Ss, a string: Ss However, whenever I try and actually cast my object to a string (boost::any_cast<std::string>(...)), I always get "boost::bad_any_cast: failed conversion using boost::any_cast". Could this possibly be a compiler issue? I saw one other thread where "-fvisibility=hidden" was causing some problems for boost::program_options and std::string. In my situation, I have a library which is responsible for creating those boost::any objects. Then its in a separately compiled library where I am getting the problems.

Hi, I was looking at the docs for the uniform_01 distribution: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_39_0/libs/random/random-distributions.html#… I read the following note "Note: The current implementation is buggy, because it may not fill all of the mantissa with random bits." I do not understand the problem. I looked at the code, which does what I expect. Why is it a problem if some of the mantissa bits are not 'random'? As I understand the requirement is the real numbers are uniformly distributed; the bit patterns should not matter provided they represent numbers with the right mathematical properties. [interprocess] Best practice question on shared resources.

Hi there, I am writing a "server" that is capable of communicating data to many "clients". Because I am implementing different communication modes (async, sync), I need special methods to lock and unlock a managed shared memory segment. My question is how to store the mutex, semaphore and managed_shared_memory segment information that are required in the lock and unlock methods. I see different approaches to implement this on client side. 1. Open the resources in the constructor of the client. Save pointers to the resources as members. So it is possible to access the resources in every method of the client class without opening them every time. The problem is that I do not recognize if the resources were closed because they only throw on opening (using linux). 2. Open the resources in the functions. That means I have to create the resource objects every time the function is called. So I have a chance to recognize if the resources have been removed. But I think this will create some useless overhead. Has anybody implemented something similar to this. How would you handle the shared resources? Suppose I have a cross-platform agent that communicates with a server. Agent from platform X sends a message to the server which contains a date/time. Server sends a message to another agent running platform Y with the same date/time. In practice X/Y are always either windows/linux or linux/windows. The server always tells the agent which platform's native format the time is represented in, so there should be no problem. Ideally I'd like to write the following code: ptime time; if (msg.is_from_windows()) { time = from_ftime<ptime>(msg.time()); } else { time = from_time_t(msg.time()); } But this doesn't work because from_ftime<> is not defined on linux. If from_ftime<> is already templated on the FILETIME type, is there any reason it needs to be #ifdef'd out on non-windows platforms? I mean, a FILETIME is really just a uint64, can't the templated function also just operate on a boost::uint64_t? Zach

Bind to first available port

I know how to do this with Windows sockets, but how do I bind a UDP listen socket to the first available port? I want to send a packet from client to the server to subscribe to data and tell the server what port to send the subscribed data to. I don't care what port the client listens to. If I hard code it, I can only run a single client on a PC. I want to bind to the first available one so I can run as many clients on the same PC as I want.

Redirecting test output to an XML file

I have the following code that I am using to regression test part of my library. The project uses automake and autoconf to build the Makefiles then runs the tests via 'make check'. I would like to see all the test result output written as XML files in the directory where the test files reside. That way I can use a script to gather them up and craft a web page off of them. My question: How to redirect Boost Test output to an XML file? I see I can use --log_format=XML to make an XML file but not quite sure how to incorporate that into automake and autoconf.
