Managed to recreate the binary serialization crash in 3 files OS : Suse Linux gcc : 4.2.1 Boost: 1.39 Files: RepeatAttr.hpp // only has an include for only the text archive RepeatAttr.cpp TestSerialisation.cpp // include the main, and has // includes for text and binary archives When the test is built there are no warnings on gcc, when the test is run the text serialisation runs ok, but binary crashes on serialising the base pointer. boost::serialization, archive not deserializing correctly

Hi, I'm trying to use the boost::serialization text_iarchive/text_oarchive, in a way very similar to the tutorial (http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_35_0/libs/serialization/doc/tutorial.html) I have confirmed that the data that gets serialized is identical to what is read in when I deserialize (in the code below inbound_data_ is identical to the contents of the text_oarchive stream), however the serialize function does not seem to work correctly. The code to deserialize looks like: std::string archive_data(&inbound_data_[0], inbound_data_.size()); std::istringstream archive_stream(archive_data); boost::archive::text_iarchive archive(archive_stream); archive >> t; where the corresponding serialize() function is: template<class Archive> void Blackboard::serialize(Archive & ar, const unsigned int version) { ar & gameController.our_team; } (gameController.our_team is a member of the 'Blackboard' class) when serializing, our_team is equal to 1, when deserializing, it gets set to zero. Hi All I would like to calculate the covariance of 2 variables. I found that in Boost there is boost::accumulators and the Statistical Accumulators Library that looks good to me. Covariance is a measure of how much two variables change together, but in the example given by boost ( I am guessing) I see only an example for one variable. I did not really understand how to setup the accumulators for 2 or more variables. What role plays the covariate here and where to pick up or feed the values for the second variable? In doing this I have noted. o creating small trivial cases seemed to work. o when I combined the test case files to a single file, it worked In trying to create the test case I figured out what caused the crash, Basically I had included text archive in all the compilation units but the binary archive _only_ in the file where I was outputting to the disk. When I included the binary archive in _all_ the compilation units that were being serialized, the test worked. I am not sure how common this case is, but gcc compiler/linker gave no warnings Maybe this need to be added as a gotcha in the documentation? Best regards, Ta, Avi

Ok I have managed to reproduce the crash in binary archive in a set of standalone files, i.e 8 files. But last time I included a tar, it got stripped. Would it be ok to just embed the file in the email or is there some other mechanism to attach file/tar files ? Best regards, Ta, Avi

Hi, I wonder what the state of handling unicode strings is in C++ / with boost? I've found some references to the codecvt<> feature, and also I've found utf8_codecvt_facet among the boost sources, but I can't really make it work. what I would need is to handle strings based on the whole unicode representation, and to encode them to UTF-8 and back. is there anything related in boost? You understand easily that a rgba pixel is stored on 40 bits... binary serialization, what's missing

I have a complex tree structure. When this is serialized with text archive all is well. (i.e on linux/gcc) However when I attempt to use the binary archive, it crashes when trying to serialize a base pointer ? I though that text and binary were interchangeable, have I missed something or is serialization via base pointer not implemented in binary ? Any help appreciated. Best regards, Ta, Avi

issues with setting properties on reverse graph

Trying to set graph properties on reverse graph does not seem to be working. Missing function 'vertex' from reverse graph

I am using boost 1.40.0. I realized some of the things I was doing in the sample code are pretty stupid. I'm still not sure why the compilation was failing on the phoenix code. I'll repost once I figure out what I'm doing. boost::graph - Newbie question about vertex properties

Hello dear mailing list members, i'm new to this mailing list and hope i'm right here and that my english is not too annoying. I have to to some distance calculation and decided to use the boost::graph-framework to do this as i have to develop a C++ application using Visual C++ Express Edition 2008. I have to include some background details information in the vertices and edges of my graph and chose to append such meta info objects to the vertices and edges with the help of properties. I'm having a problem using Boost.Phoenix. I'm currently building against Boost 1.41 using gcc 4.3.2. I've simplified my use case quite a bit, so please forgive the obtuseness of the example. [asio] Receiving data larger than buffer.

Hi, I have a few questions regarding asio, and the network sockets in particular. I'm using TCP sockets to transfer data across a network. The problem I have is when data that is larger than the receive buffer. In this case num bytes reported == receive buffer size, however, is there a way to distinguish the case when I receive exactly buffer size amounts of data, and when the case when there's more left to complete the transfer? How does asio handle transfer of really large buffers? Will it dispatch it client side in receive buffer sized chunks as it enters, or will it wait for the entire payload to enter some internal buffer before dispatching?

Using boost::bind with boost::function

I'm using Boost ver 1.39.0 I have a module to which other modules can register callbacks. This module will call those callbacks with a couple of arguments - as an example registerCallBack(void (*callbackFunc)(int)); At the time of callback it will call: (*callbackFunc)(3); To allow for any function to be registered (each module's callback may have a different signature etc, but everyone can allow for this one last arg), I declared it to take a boost::function<void (int)> I was hoping that if I have a twoarg_callback(int, int) function, I can register it with the module by using boost::bind to bind the first argument, but that is not possible. I am unable to assign the return value of boost::bind to a boost::function<void (int)> object by binding one argument. However, assigning the return value of boost::bind where all the arguments of a function are bound (so the resulting object is a void() function) seems to work. I'm trying to decipher the errors, but would appreciate any help I can get. I get errors both on VisualStudio 2008, as well as g++ 4.1.2, so I'm guessing it's not some compiler problem rather it's my usage. Attached a sample source file. [serialization] usage of polymorphic archives generate linker errors

Hi everyone, the attached example [1] generates a couple of linker [2] errors on msvc 9.0 / boost 1.40.0 all related to missing archive_serializer_map symbols. when switching from polymorphic archives to corresponding non-polymorphic archives the attached example runs fine. It seems that the usage of BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT in conjunction with polymorphic archives triggers the linker error. I tried to add explicit template instantiations, such as [3], for the missing types to boost archive, recompiled boost and was able to get rid of the linker error. The problem then, however, is that the example fails at runtime with an assertion that a type-lookup did not succeed. So I guess adding the explicit template instantiations was not the correct approach. Any ideas? [MultiIndex] insert with and without position hint

Hello, For some reason, the "hinted" version of insert() returns just an iterator, while the "unhinted" one returns pair: std::pair<iterator,bool> insert(const value_type& x); iterator insert(iterator position,const value_type& x); I've got a container with 1 ordered unique index. From one hand, I have to know whether the insertion was succesful, but from the other hand, 99% of the objects are inserted in their natural ascending order, so I use the hinted version: container_.insert(container_.end(), newObj); So my question is whether there's any performance benefit of the "hinted" version in such case, or I can move to the simple one w/o any performance loss? It will be used with T=double and T=MyAutomaticDerivativeClass. How to skip leading characters

I have an input text file that I read line by line into a standard string. Each line has the following format: Name1 00 12 3a 4c ff … Name2 33 55 5c dd ee … How do create the grammer to skip the leading NameX on each line and put the hex digits into a vector? If the lines had a more complex format such that anything could appear before NameX for example: Bla bla bla : 0a .bb cc NameX 01 22 aa dd 33 44 50 00 … How could I once again get the hex digits after the name into a vector?

I have a code that gets a line, encodes it in base64 and save it to a file and another part that opens the same file inorder to read the data, for some reason, the get function at line 99 returns an empty string. how can I solve this problem? complete code can be found at http://pastebin.com/f62d2fbf5 thanks

Hi all, The formal review of the Generic Geometry Library (GGL) starts today, November 5, 2009 and will finish November 15, 2009. GGL is being developed by Barend Gehrels, Bruno Lalande and Mateusz Loskot, with substantial input from this Boost mailing list. ------------------------------------------------ About the library: GGL defines concepts for geometries and implements some algorithms on such geometries. GGL is header-only, and can be applied in all software where geometry plays a small or a larger role. Users of the library can use just only one function, such as distance: int a[2] = {1,1}; int b[2] = {2,3}; double d = ggl::distance(a, b); Library users can also use the library in combination with std::vector, boost::tuple's and boost::ranges, such as: std::vector<boost::tuple<double, double, double> > line; line.push_back(boost::make_tuple(1, 2, 3)); line.push_back(boost::make_tuple(4, 5, 6)); line.push_back(boost::make_tuple(7, 8, 9)); double length = ggl::length(line); GGL can also be used in combination with custom or legacy geometries, adapting them to the library specializing traits classes or using registration macro's. [ASIO] Timer question

Greetings. I programming library that I use (WT) had a bug in their asynchronous timer handling, and although they fixed it, they are thinking of moving over to Boost::ASIO timers since they already use Boost::ASIO for the networking stack. However, an interesting question was posed about how Boost::ASIO timers handle the time changing on the host computer (which is a possible scenario for this library due to its up-time requirements). Below is the basic part of the thread in question. Does anyone know the answer? I attempted a quick look through the timer source, however I cannot really seem to tell since I know not the internals of ASIO nor the posix datetime library in Boost... So, I was able to modify _1 (type of struct ptnode) by using a functor() (e.g. [_val = func(x, _1)] where the function will take a reference of _1 and do some modification to it and return (typeof(_1)&). Problem with exception and property tree in 1.41.0.

Hello, I have tried 1.41.0, especially PropertyTree. I used cross compiler arm-linux-g++ version 3.2.2 and example from property tree (debug_settings.cpp). My question is (because I'm not an expert in Boost) : Can I remove this virtual destructor without any consequence? For the second problem I think that STL library which is used in arm-linux toolchain is a little bit old. But maybe I'm wrong. As a temporary fix I also removed this line. unit test framework XML output - CDATA sections?

Hi, I have a suggestion for the XML output generated by the boost unit test framework: currently, if tests fail, the message detailing the failure of the test is put in verbatim as a test element into the XML output. This can be problematic, if the output contains XML-like structures, like text that looks like an XML element, or invalid characters. thus, I'd suggest enclosing such output in a CDATA section, that would ensure that the generated XML file is indeed always well formed XML. see more here: http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-xml/#sec-cdata-sect - but basically this would mean printing the failures like this: <![CDATA[ reason of the failure... ]]> Akos

[Spirit.Qi] How do I get Rule Name/Id through Semantic Action / Phoenix variable

I want to create a generic Parse Tree from a simple expression grammar (see below code snippet). Using the Mini_XML as the reference, I was able to create a Parse Tree close to what I want. If I run my simple program and parse an expressions "[foo=1 bar=2]", for example, it will printout the following Parse Tree: [foo=1 bar=2] ------------------------- Parsing succeeded <nonterminal> { <nonterminal> { <value_str>foo</value_str> <value_int>1</value_int> } <nonterminal> { <value_str>bar</value_str> <value_int>2</value_int> } } The next thing I want to achieve is to have the Parse Tree looks very similar to the one produced in Spirit.Classic. In Spirit.Classic for each node it has RuleId for which we associate it with a RuleName so that when we are iterating the node of the Parse Tree we can printout the RuleName. Hi, I've been making my first forays in to using Boost on the new OS X release and have encountered some strange behaviour on 64bit machines. boost::interprocess container of pointers

Hi, I have a problem with container of pointers in shared memory using boost::interprocess, object created by construct method is mapped to local memory address, so I can not just put it into shared memory container because the address would be invalid in other process, probably I have to remap or use some kind of smart pointer and than put into container. My question is Does someone know how to do that? [Asio] serial port example doesn't work on Mac: Operation not supported, bad file descriptor

Hello, I'm trying to communicate with the serial port using the example code "minicom" that was posted here: http://lists.boost.org/boost-users/att-41140/minicom.cpp On Linux, the example works flawlessly and lets me communicate with both "native" serial port hardware and USB-to-serial converted hardware with FTDI chips, which can be adressed via /dev/ttyUSB. On a Power Mac with OS Tiger, using boost 1.40 and the gcc 4.0 compiler, everytime I start the example I get the following errors: $ ./minicom.app/Contents/MacOS/minicom 57600 /dev/cu.usbserial-4B11 Error: Operation not supported Press Enter to exit Error: Bad file descriptor Press Enter to exit However, I can talk to the serial-via-usb hardware using some native socket functions, so the file descriptor itself can't be the problem. How can I get the minicom example to work on Mac also? As I am considering to use Spirit.Qi for my project, I am ramping up myself through the examples given. I was able to compile the calcX examples. However, I have issues compiling Mini_XML* and Employee.cpp examples. Hi, I have the following problem, when using the Sun Studio C++ compiler and boost::smart_ptr. Consider the following code: class A {}; class B : public A {}; template<typename T> void fn(shared_ptr<A> a, T t) { } void foo() { shared_ptr<A> a; shared_ptr<B> b; fn(a, 1); fn(b, 1); } this compiles fine with a number of compilers, including gcc, icc and MS Visual Studio. But when I try to compile it using the Sun Studio compiler, I get: Error: Could not find a match for fn<T>(boost::shared_ptr<B>, int) needed in foo(). it only works if I explicitly cast the derived class' shared_ptr to that of the base class, that is, instead of: fn(b, 1); I need to use: fn((shared_ptr<A>) b, 1); which seems rather inconvenient. is the fn(b, 1); style really bad? is there a way to make the Sun compiler accept this form? [type_traits] typedef problem on Microware/Radisys OS9

I am trying to port parts of boost to the Microware/Radisys OS9 platform. This is really an old embedded systems C++ compiler that has not been updated since about 1997. Anyways I can get shared_ptr to work and convert between convertible types. But when I try to compile anything out of type_traits library the compiler can't handle anything like: typedef typename se_t::template type<T> helper; (line 156 in is_enum.hpp) My compiler error is "expected an identifier" at ::template. I am guessing that I am out of luck, but is there any way to rewrite or simplify these kind of constructs?

Linker not pulling in boost_system properly

I'm having trouble with linking to an installation of Boost. I just downloaded boost_1_41_0.tar.bz2, untarred it, and did: $ ./bootstrap.sh --prefix=/home/sewall/src/boost-1.41.0 $ ./bjam --prefix=/home/sewall/src/boost-1.41.0 install Now I've got a project (using autotools+libtool) of my own making that uses a number of Boost libraries. If I manually add -lboost_system to the above command line, the target builds fine. Of course I can just have my configure script general -lboost_filesystem and -lboost_system whenever boost_filesystem is needed, but I suspect there's a better way to do it. Is there something I should have added to my Boost build to have it know to look for boost_system in /home/sewall/src/boost-1.41.0? Thanks, Jason P.S. [Spirit] poor performance

I just shocked to find out that my parser with Spirit-classic is 4x slower than my original ad-hoc parser. I do generate parsetree with pt_parse(). So does my adhoc parser but my adhoc one generates its own custom parse tree. My question are: 1. Does spirit classic with generation of parse tree is known to be slow? 2. Does anyone have ever done perf study and compare Spirit.Classic with Spirit.Qi (assuming to generate custom parse tree in Spirit.Qi)? 3. If the bottleneck is in the Spirit.Classic parse tree generation, has anyone ever done a custom parse tree generation in Spirit.Classic? For now it seems I am hitting a roadblock to use Spirit as performance is my main issue. Your insight is highly appreciated. I would like to have an extension added to Boost.Filesystem, which I have been hand patching along the way. For version 1.41.0, in boost/filesystem/path.hpp, at line 274, add public: typedef boost::BOOST_FILESYSTEM_NAMESPACE::basic_path<String, Traits> path_type; What this does is provides access to the path type for a path iterator from just the iterator. I find it very handy when writing generic path handling code. Otherwise you have to hard code for a particular type of path, or pass the type along even though the iterator depends on that type.

libboost_filesystem-vc90-xxx-1_39.lib requirement in boost 41?

My project (windows, vs2008, debug) was linking successfully under boost-39. When I switched to boost 41 version the linker started to complain about missing lib (fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'libboost_filesystem-vc90- mt-gd-1_39.lib'). My linker properties does not specify the library explicitly, just the path to boost libraries. The path had been changed to boost 41 (I have $BOOST system var that both compiler and linker properties refer to) and there are corresponding libraries under the same relative path in boost 41 (libboost_filesystem-vc90-mt-gd-1_41.lib). Specifying new library explicitly in the linker properties did not help. I renamed old "39" directory and both compiler and linker are referring to boost via system variable. I double checked that this system variable points to the new "41" directory. Compiling completes sucessfully, but linker fails. How can I correct the problem?

different behavior for boost::filesystem with VC9 in debug and release

Hello, Sorry to ask this question but I investigate and I didn't find any previous message. I try to use boost::filename::is_directory( path) in my code developed on visual studio 2008. In debug mode, I have an error on this function and specificaly at file_status result( detail::status_api( ph.external_file_string(), ec ) ); in operations.hpp. (Detail status crashes, it seems). In release mode, no problem everything is fine, my path is valid and my program is running.... And yes, my path is valid. I have boost 1.40, the compilation option for boost and my program are the same. The linkage is valid (I checked that my compiled libraries are used). So anyone has a clue for this bug? Because I'd like to understand and stay in debug mode to track bugs. Thanks by advance

posix_time_zone::calc_zone probably buggy

Hello, The Posix specification says that the offset in the TZ variable gives the time to add to the local time in order to get UTC. Thus, western hemisphere zones have positive offsets and eastern hemisphere zones have negative offsets. time_zone_base::base_utc_offset gives the offset of the timezone from UTC. Thus, western hemisphere zones have negative base_utc_offset_ and eastern hemisphere zones have positive base_utc_offset_. Posix specifies that the offset specified in TZ must be added to the localtime in order to obtain UTC. base_utc_offset_ must be added to UTC in order to obtain local times. Thus, base_utc_offset_ must be minus the TZ offset. So I think a minus should be added in front of date_time::str_from_delimited_time_duration<time_duration_type,char_type> in the calc_zone method of date_time/local_time/posix_time_zone.hpp. Regards, Sorin

[function] Using boost::function when rtti is not available

Hi, I am in a gaming build environment that has traditionally turned of rtti because of space and portability issues. But, I would like to use the very useful boost::function. On MSVC boost::function works, but fails on g++ for the ps3. I have read on the lists that it is possible to implement a rtti-less version, and that this is even wanted in the future. My question to the list is: did anyone have a try at an implementation and could share it ? boost pointer serialisation broken on IBM AIX

Serialisation of pointers is ok linux, hpux, but has the following exception: archive_exception::unregistered_class on IBM AIX v10.1 using boost 1.39 Trivial case can be made to work. However as the number of files grows, pointer serialisation start/stops working. There seems to undefined behaviour. There is a _known_ problem with serialisation via base pointer, however this problem is exhibited with normal pointer serialisation. It is extremely difficult to create small enough test case which shows the problem. Sometimes a test case will work and at other times a seemly innocuous change (like adding/removing more hierarchy) will show the problem again. Hi, I've noticed that the Graph library has changed in the new version, though the documentation and the examples have not been updated. I am trying to use the fruchterman_reingold algorithm. I am confused as to the new parameters topology, origin and extent that are passed to the function. I think topology is given by xmin, ymin, xmax, ymax for a rectangular topology. For the origin, I have used topology.center() But I am at loss as to what the extent is and what I should assign it. Can someone please explain these new parameters and what values are expected. Hello all, I'm during proxy application development. I'm forced to use external application protocol over TCP. I'm running application on windows and linux (ubuntu). Actors: - client app (sends data) - server app (receives data and sends this same data back) - MIM - my proxy Server receives all data, tries to send it back, but variously proxy stuck waiting for complete data. When issue appears: - The issue I'm struggling with, appears only on linux. - The issue shows up in various cases but always when transferring bulk data (bigger then my buffer size (essentially - 20kB). When issue doesn't appears: - The issue doesn't exist without my proxy (direct client-server connection). Both of applications are allocating this bulk data. So they send and receive data in single step. - during step debugging :) One problem I see is that protocol of that system is designed in a way that it: - uses non blocking sockets - does not check each time is socket ready (only on "handshake") which causes EAGAIN error. Hi, I have a problem regarding the static visitor of boost::variant. there is a variant and a mpl vector: variant<A1,A2,A3> var; typedef mpl::vector<B1,B2,B3> B_types; the variant and the vector have the same number of types, but not the same types. I need to "visit" the element of the variant, and access the B_types element at the same position as the element of the variant: struct visitor : static_visitor<void>{ template<class A> void operator()(A a) const{ typedef typename mpl::at_c<B_types,var.which()>::type B; //error } }; so if var.which() == 1, I need a typedef of type B2. obviously the code above doesn't work because which() is a runtime function. but the value of which() is known statically at this point (that's the point of visitation). is there a way to access it, with boost::variant visitors? I like neither of the solutions I can come up with: 1. write my own visitation pattern that not only instantiates the visitor with the variant type but also with the vector type. 2. convert the variant to template<class A,class B> struct A_holder{ typedef B B_type; A value; }; variant<A_holder<A1,B1>,A_holder<A2,B2>,A_holder<A3,B3> > var; 3. do a seperate "visition" of the mpl vector inside the variant visitor: struct visitor : static_visitor<void>{ template<class A> void operator()(A a) const{ switch(var.which()){ case... case... } } }; is there a better way to do this?

[asio] Error: should never be called

Since a few days I do get strange exceptions (boost::system::system_error) from my asio network code, based on v1.39. The message logged with .what() and .code() gives the following line: winsock: error: should never be called (error: should never be called:16646560) (The .code() output is put in parentheses.) I found two functions that produce the message in error_code.hpp (line 479ff) but I have no idea why they shouldn't be called. There's a comment to explain the implementation that refers to VC++ 8, but I have VC++ 7.1, so it doesn't seem that this code is called for VC++ 8 only. Are there any known cases, that produce this error message? thanks, Norbert

[Bimap] Many warnings

I declared a bimap in my code and discovered that it generates 200+ warnings. I'm using MS Visual Studio 2008 with Boost 1.41. All the warnings are the same: C4503: '<long variable name>' : decorated name length exceeded, name was truncated Functionally, the program *should* still work despite all the warnings (from what I've found on Google), but I'd like to know why this many warnings are generated by declaring: "boost::bimap<int, int> RemoteIdentityMap;". Shortest path problem: distance between two vertices

I am kind of new to C++ and also boost library, trying to use the bfs to find the distance between two vertices in a graph. As I read from previous posts, the easiest way would be to throw an exception once the target vertex has been discovered. Now the problem is that I can't figure out how to do this, and this is pretty urgent! Can you help me with a few lines of code which make the bfs_visitor and call the bfs function for this purpose? Hi, I think you can pass whatever you want for those parameters since they are actually not used in the algorithm. The only thing that is used it the topology. Actually the fruchterman algorithm in 1.40 was broken and did not work for me. Maybe you should give the newly released 1.41 a try because there the two parameters origin and extend have been removed and the bug that was in 1.40 has been fixed. Best Ralph

How to upload a file with ASIO

Hello, I have successfully implemented clients and servers, both in the Windows side and the Linux side. So far, the Windows client passes a set of parameters and the servers returns some text which is displayed on the client's screen. That part is working perfectly. My next challenge is to upload a whole file(s) from the client to the server and would like hear any tips, caveats from experienced ASIO users. Thanks to everyone for sharing their expertise. Hi, I'm new to boost python and built an extension on Centos 4 64bit using Boost 1.40 and python 2.3.4-14.7.el4_8.2 and it runs like a charm on the same machine. After that I tried to use my extension on a RHEL4 with python 2.3.4-14.3 installed and got the following error: ImportError: /tmp/install/lib/libboost_python.so.1.40.0: undefined symbol: Py_InitModule4 I get the same error when using python 2.6 on Fedora 11 64bit. Is this some kind of versioning issue? I'm quite helpless with this and your help is highly appreciated. Cheers, Jan.

Losing memory connecting multiple signals to a passed slot_type

Hi, I've been losing memory when using Boost::Signal. I cannot find anywhere in forums and documentation if it's legal to use a passed slot_type multiple times, so I feel that may be the issue, but was wondering if someone here could either verify that or otherwise help me fix my problem. I have a PageManager that inherits from boost::signals::trackable. We use an allocator that tracks 'memory handles,' and it seems that the number of unfreed handles is always the number of phrases - 1, so in this case we had 49 handles that weren't freed. I feel like this has something to do with using the passed slot_type for multiple connects, but can't find anywhere saying that I can't do that. I would appreciate any suggestions. [boost::signals] Who deletes copied objects passed to slots?

I am using boost::signals2 to pass copied objects from my library's worker thread to a client GUI. While this works well, the GUI must delete the copied objects when done which seems wrong. Boost.Statechart and CppUnit in Eclipse on Ubuntu

Hi, I have a simple state machine that I put together in NetBeans CDT (on a WinXP machine with MinGW) with a short main program to check the first few states. I then moved the code to a Linux box (Ubuntu) with Eclipse (gcc 4.3.3) and the CppUnit plug-in ECUT to follow our practices and procedures. The code compiles in the CppUnit test fixture; however, when the test reaches myMachine.initiate(); (the first thing that is Statechart-related) the testing stops. What can fail in the initiate() method that would stop the execution? Any suggestions on debugging this would be appreciated. Pat

Hi Question on using history with custom reactions I have a parent-state-A state and a parent-state-B state parent-state-A has a child-state-A1 and a child-state-A2 (nested state) The machine initializes on parent-state-A entering by default in child-state-A1 (the initial state) Then moves to child-state-A2 Then to parent-state-B Then a event occurs and I need the machine to go back to child-state-A2 (and not the initial state child-state-A2) question is how do I do it when using custom reactions that is, instead of doing a hardcoded parent-state-B::react (event& evty) { return transit<child-state-A2 > (); } I would like to do something like parent-state-B::react (event& evty) { return transit<parent-state-A > (); } and let the state machine figure out that it needs to go back to child-state-A2 rather then the initial child-state-A1 the documentation shows how to do it with sc::transition... but I couldn't find a way to do it in the case of custom reactions trial and error didn't work either... help! : ) thanks in advance silva

Hi, thanks a lot for you help. Unfortunately, adding a virtual dummy function to the base class (the only one I can alter directly in the library) didn't resolve the problem. So I don't know (didn't check the beta) if 1.41 will resolve this issue. I tried to track it down deep into the heap allocation but I don't have any experience at all with meta-programming and the MPL and gave up in the end. I found a quick (and dirty) fix, though, that helps in my case. Therefor, I wrote a specialization of boost::archive::details::heap_allocator for the eigen::Matrix<> classes that uses code that was reserved for compiler that didn't support the has_new_operator feature (which is obviously the case). namespace boost { namespace archive { namespace detail { template<typename Scalar, int Rows, int Cols> struct heap_allocator<Eigen::Matrix<Scalar, Rows, Cols> > { typedef Eigen::Matrix<Scalar, Rows, Cols> T; static T * invoke() { return static_cast<T *> (operator new(sizeof (T))); } }; }; }; }; Best regards, Stefan

Hello all, I'm trying to come up with a solution for the following problem. I've a macro with three arguments, but if the third is not given, it should be assumed as '0'. Something on the lines of default arguments for functions. I'm using VS2005, and g++ 4.4.x so i can use Variadic macros, but I'm unable to come up with a solution. Is there any way i can achieve this using Boost.Preprocessor ? I tried using BOOST_PP_IF but unable to proceed further. Any Ideas ? Surya

[test] Still SIGCHLD issues?

Hi, I'm in progress of updating some projects to use Boost 1.40 (upgrading from 1.34.1). Everything now works fine under Windows, but under Linux there are issues with running unit tests that spawns and control child processes. My tests now report fatal errors and stops responding. Searching the archives I see several references to a problem with SIGCHLD, but no fix seems to have been issued. I'm sure there is a valid reason for treating SIGCHLD as errors, but does it really need to be enabled by default? Seems like a regression to me. Is it possible to disable this without patching Boost.Test? I'd really, really, really like to not go that route. Regards / Johan

Mi compiler version is: gcc version 4.0.1 (Apple Inc. build 5465) The error occurs only in the load method of the class and the serialization routines for the matrix class are non-inversive (save seems to work). I tried boost 1.40, same problem (see below) I have implemented a first architecture, working like : - a server listens to UDP packets v6 coming on a port ( let's say 65000). - a client connects to that port by sending a UDP packet. - the server starts a new thread, which listens for udpv6 packets on another port - the client should deconnect and reconnect to that other port. Cleitns starts opening the first socket like that : boost::asio::io_service io_service; udp::endpoint endpoint; udp::socket socket(io_service); udp::resolver::query query(udp::v6(), m_host, m_port); udp::resolver resolver(io_service); endpoint = *resolver.resolve(query); socket.open(udp::v6()); Then a function is called that sends a packet, receive an answer, etc... WORKS ! Then, I would like that socket being closed, and reopened on the same host, but on a different port. Something like this : socket.close(); udp::socket socket(io_service); udp::resolver::query query2(udp::v6(), m_host, NEWPORT); udp::resolver resolver2(io_service); endpoint = *resolver2.resolve(query2); socket.open(udp::v6()); But it fails miserably, throwing exception "Host not found (Authoritative)" on this second attempt. m_host is the ipv6 loopback address, "::1". I tried declaring at the same time, a full new set of io_service, endpoint, socket, query, resolver : the very same thing happens ! That said, there is another thread listening on the NEWPORT for udp v6 packets. I am developping mainly under linux, using lsof lists exactly the right number of ports opened (m_port and NEWPORT are opened for udpv6) So what is incorrect ? I don't really understand the behavior and complexity of io_service, maybe that's the problem ? How can I reopen a second socket on another port ? That port being listed by the system as opened succesfully, I really think the problem lies in that section. Thank you !

boost-regex: how to compile with mingw?

I have never worked with boost or the regex libary but need it as a dependency for another project. I could compile the libary for Visual Studio 2005 (VS8), but the docs give not a single hint how to compile with mingw on Windows (here XP). [serialization] Problems with serializing a shared_ptr

Hello, I want to add serialization support to the Eigen2 matrix class. Hi list, I'm a big fan of both foreach and auto facilities provided by Boost and was thinking of merging the two. I searched in the list archives and saw the question was discussed earlier but didn't find a clear reason on why it shouldn't be done. [test] Linking against boost_unit_test_framework causes double-deletion in std::ostringstream

Just curious if anyone else has seen this or anything like it? Platform is Mac OS X 10.6.1, gcc 4.2.1, boost 1.40.0 installed from MacPorts, compiling 64-bit (default). Here's my test code: #include <sstream> int main() { std::ostringstream str; str << "Help Me!"; return 0; } Here's what I'm doing: % g++ -o streamtest_bad -ggdb -L/opt/local/lib -lboost_unit_test_framework-mt-d streamtest.cpp % ./streamtest_bad streamtest_bad(63554) malloc: *** error for object 0x7fff7008a500: pointer being freed was not allocated *** set a breakpoint in malloc_error_break to debug zsh: abort ./streamtest_bad % Works fine against other boost libraries, eg system: % g++ -o streamtest_good -ggdb -L/opt/local/lib -lboost_system-mt-d streamtest.cpp % ./streamtest_good % Note that this seems to be a separate problem to that reported in ticket 3432 (https://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/ticket/3432) At least, I have verified that the framework::clear() function isn't being called in the above code, which does tend to point the finger at a different part of the library.
