hello I've implemented a base64 decoder using input_filter, now for some reason I can't seem to cause it to end when reaching EOF. I need to read the entire that but using >> returns what is in between spaces, so I've created a function that loops on the stream to get the data. using a bool flag haven't worked because for some reason, the value isn't saved between the functions so I've tried with a specific char, that didn't worked too, how can I know when I've reached EOF? the headers and source can be found at: http://gitorious.org/open-source-soccer-manager/ossm/blobs/master/src/Utili… http://gitorious.org/open-source-soccer-manager/ossm/blobs/master/src/Utili… thanks.

[boost-build] error: Unable to find file or target named '/qt//QtGui'

Hi! After successfully compiling our project dozens of times, I suddenly get the error: Unable to find file or target named '/qt//QtGui'. I have absolutely no clue to what I could possibly have changed; I reverted our whole jamtree to the date before the last successful compilation... The jamfile in which the error is thrown looks something like this: import qt4 ; lib foo : $(SOURCE_ROOT)/bar.cpp (and many more...) /qt//QtGui /q//QtXml /qt//QtCore /qt//QtOpenGL : ; install install_foo : foo : <variant>release:<location>$(INSTALL_ROOT) <variant>debug:<location>$(INSTALL_ROOT)/debug ; I thought that the build tools of bjam then find the appropriate stuff and build it according to /usr/local/boost_1_42_0/tools/build/v2/tools/qt.jam which I obviously didn't change at all. I get the same error both with boost version 1_40_0 and 1_42_0. The stuff not dependent on qt seems to work fine... I'm working on a Kubuntu 9.10 box with gcc 4.4.1 - and as far as I can see (the history of my package manager admits), there was no change to the qt libs of Kubuntu during the time in question - but maybe the history of this package manager is not so reliable (I checked again that all the -dev packages are installed as well). Has anybody an idea what could have gone wrong? Is there another way to specify that bjam should include, compile and link these libraries? Thanks in advance Tim

Seeding boost::mt19937 with bytes from CryptoGenRandom

I have a C++ program that uses /dev/urandom on Unix systems to seed boost::mt19937. I'm porting the program to Windows. I can get good, random seed data on Windows similar to random seed data produced from /dev/urandom on Unix systems like so: HCRYPTPROV hProvider = 0; BYTE randomBytes[8]; CryptAcquireContext(&hProvider, 0, 0, PROV_RSA_FULL, CRYPT_VERIFYCONTEXT); CryptGenRandom(hProvider, sizeof(randomBytes), randomBytes); CryptReleaseContext(hProvider, 0); However, I'm running into trouble attempting to pass these randomBytes to boost::mt19937. On Unix I do something similar to this: uint64_t GetSeed() { uint64_t seed; std::ifstream urandom; urandom.open("/dev/urandom"); urandom.read(reinterpret_cast<char*> (&seed), sizeof(seed)); urandom.close(); return seed; } boost::mt19937 rng(GetSeed()); That works OK on Unix I think. Could anyone suggest how to get the random data from the Windows CryptoAPI passed to boost::mt19937 as seed data? file_mapping and network failure problem

Hi, I use boost::interprocess::file_mapping to map certain data files (data files are on server). Then I use boost::interprocess::mapped_region with that file-map to access the data. The following is pseudo code: // file-map is initialized first file_mapping fileMap(filename); mapped_region mappedRegion(fileMap); // later some where else data is read from file float * ptr = reinterpret_cast<float *>(mappedRegion.get_address()); float value = ptr[index]; This works normally fine. But sometimes you map data file when network is ok After that you need to look some data (in portion that is not on memory allready) when the network is not in use, then program just crashes. This is pretty logical to me. But the question is, can I some how detect the problem and prevent the crash. I tried to catch exception but no help there. And is this the rigth way to use mapped files? Marko

I have the following code: typedef std::vector<boost::intrusive_ptr<node> > children_t; children_t children = group.children_.value(); ⋮ children.push_back(*n); bool succeeded = false; BOOST_SCOPE_EXIT((&succeeded)(&children)) { if (!succeeded) { children.pop_back(); } } BOOST_SCOPE_EXIT_END This is yielding compiler errors like this: 193: error: ‘boost_se_params_t_193::boost_se_param_t_0_193’ is not a type 193: error: ‘boost_se_params_t_193::boost_se_param_t_1_193’ is not a type The block of code emitted by the preprocessor starts like this: typedef void (*boost_se_tag_0_193)(int &succeeded); typedef void (*boost_se_tag_1_193)(int &children); … which leads me to conclude that, for some reason, BOOST_SCOPE_EXIT isn't picking up the correct types for its arguments. [fusion] Use of FUSION_MAX_VECTOR_SIZE in headers

Hi all, I'm trying to use fusion vectors with more than 10 elements, but I'm running into some trouble. I'm using fusion as an implementation detail of some header-based tools, which get included (often indirectly) by some translation units. The tools require large fusion vectors, but I don't want client code (i.e. the .cpp files) to have to care about this. I was under the impression that I could just add: #define FUSION_MAX_VECTOR_SIZE 20 #include <boost/fusion/container.hpp> in my tool's header file, and be off to the races. It seems that this works only if no other fusion header has been included previously in the same translation unit: #include <boost/fusion/container.hpp> ... #define FUSION_MAX_VECTOR_SIZE 20 #include <boost/fusion/container.hpp> ... // Error - too many template arguments! boost::fusion::make_vector(1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15); I really don't want to have to track down every translation unit which is (usually indirectly) including my tool's header. I am under the impression that boost::function is fine with client code redefining its limit macro and re-including its header, but perhaps fusion does not have the same feature? I also realize that for vector itself I can just include vectorN.hpp and use vectorN<...>, but if I want to use the generation functions (make_vector, vector_tie) it seems I'm stuck. [filesystem] how to get wstring value from wpath::external_file_string() with gcc?

I want wpath::external_file_string to return a unicode wstring. On windows, with my visual studio project settings set to "Unicode character set", it correctly returns a wstring. But on OSX (using xcode/gcc) it tries to return a string. I believe this is due to Traits::external_string_type. This is supposed to be OS specific string type and I want my application to use Unicode for all interactions with OS (filesystem paths, command-line parameters etc), then boost will also set this type to wstring. How do I configure my project such that this trait is set to wstring? Any xcode settings or gcc parameters or #defines? SG

I have a sequence of "Field"s: typedef fusion::vector< Field<int, 3, Check1, ..>, Field<float, 8, Check2, ..>, Field<MyString, 2, Check3, ..>, ... > MySequence; Each "Field" knows how to (de)serialize, has some checking policy and a few more little stuff. "Field" also has a "int" property "TypeSize": static const int TypeSize = somevalue_known_at_compile_time; I'd like to traverse the type "MySequence" and get the sum of all the sizes at compile time. Like: Field<int,3,Check1>::TypeSize + Field<float, 8, Check2>::TypeSize + Field<MyString,2,Check3>::TypeSize + ... ; I tried playing with fusion::accumulate and mpl<int_> but couldn't do it. There's no much documentation/examples about fusion (correct me if I am wrong please). How can I get the accumulated sum of Field<...>::TypeSize of all the members in "MySequence"? Thanks in advance, Benedetto PS: It's not really a priority (the cost of doing that at runtime once for object is minimal), but I'd really like to fully understand Fusion, which I have found very useful so far.

Hello, I am using Boost 1.41.0 with Visual Studio 2005 and noticed some strange behaviour which I am unsure how to fix. When I call boost::filesystem::remove_all("somepath"); everything compiles and links fine. calling a method in executable from dll

Hi, I have a plug-in and an executable. I want the executable to expose certain functions to the dll. To do that, the address (reference) of the object in executable is passed to the dll. and I thought of invoking the methods in executable using this reference. Convert ptime to UTC based on runtime current machine timezon

Hi, How can I convert a boost ptime to UTC given the current machine settings, without hard coding anything? I found the c_local_time_adjustor but it only has a utc_to_local() method. I tried reading through some of the local_time documentation but got lost with all the time zones. I realize they are important but for this application the software much always convert a ptime (that will be in the current machines local time) into UTC. I am running on Linux fwiw. Reading response without blocking

Hi, I am using boost ASIO for uploading file to a http server(I had everything working using WinInet but switching to boost::ASIO for portability reason.). I have upload working but at the end of upload I want to read the response from the server, but I am not sure how to find that there is not more data on the wire. I am using sync socket, so my call are blocking if there is no more data, here is what I need to know. How do I make sure that my call does not block if there is no more data? Or how do I know that there is no more data on the wire so don't try to read it? IS there any call which simply check and return if there is no more data? Can I use async read even though I am using sync socket for everything else. I don't' want to switch to async socket unless there is now way out of it. lexical_cast specializations

I did some searching but did not find anything that directly addresses my issue. I have been working with the QT library and I wanted to optimize boost::lexical_cast for QString. My goal is to have the speed of direct conversions (as QString provides specialized methods for char* and std::string) while keeping the convenience of using lexical_cast by reflex. My results (which seem to work) look like this: namespace boost { template <> inline QString lexical_cast<QString, char const *>(char const * const& src) { return src ? QString(src) : QString(); } template <> inline QString lexical_cast<QString, char *>(char * const& src) { return src ? QString(src) : QString(); } } Is this an appropriate / recommended approach? If not, is there a better one? There are some other cases of a similar nature that I would like to optimize as well.

Isn't the only reason it compiles is because operator<<(ostream&,any const&) is recursive in the case that the any holds a non-streamable type? E.g. the C in your case. Thus, if the user accidentally tries to stream a non-streamable type he hard-crashes his program by blowing the stack... and because it is an any he has no means of knowing for sure if the contents are streamable at instantiation time. He has to "trust to luck". The OP might not like the term "type-safe" but here the downsides of non-type safety are showing themselves up! Of course a more advanced implementation might go down a has_operator_stream metafunction route. But then you are getting well away from the spirit of Any and towards that of Adobe.Poly as another posted mentioned. Pete

Serialization of a unordered_map

Hallo, I just wondered, why there is no possibility to serialize a unordered map. Since the STL map is serialized, i take the file for it and changed all maps to boost::unordered_map (multimap). Or is there a better way, i just did not see? [proto] Handling String Terminals

If I have a grammar like this: typedef boost::proto::literal<std::string>::type StringTerminal; typedef or_< StringTerminal, ... > Rule; and I do this: checkMatch<Rule>(boost::proto::lit(std::string("str"))); checkMatch<Rule>(std::string("str")); checkMatch<Rule>("str"); where checkMatch is a wrapper around matches<>, the first line is the only one that passes. This is presumably because the string needs to be "protoized" and to match StringTerminal it has to be cast to std::string explicitly. This is rather ugly for constructs like this: term["str"] => term[lit(string("str"))] I would really rather not have to do the lit(string()) thing. Is there a good strategy to avoid this clutter? I could predefine literals like this: StringTerminal strlit = {{"str"}}. term[strlit] but that's a bit burdensome on the user. Would the same massaging be needed for, say, term + "strlit" Perhaps I can reformulate the grammar to avoid the cluttter by using constructs that promote constants to proper proto terminals. Hi, I'm using the gil jpeg_io extension like this: gil::rgb8_image_t img; gil::jpeg_read_image("test.jpg",img); As it turned out, if "test.jpg" is not a jpeg the program will quit with the message: "Not a JPEG file: starts with 0x6b 0x6a" although I put a try-catch-block around it. Digging a bit deeper, I found, that this is because in boost/gil/extension/io/jpeg_io_private.hpp the jpeg_reader::init() function uses the standard error handler: _cinfo.err=jpeg_std_error(&_jerr); which calls the exit() function. I'd prefer to have an exception and handle the exception in my main program rather than in the library. Is there a way to do that? To me it seems there's no other way than modifying the jpeg_io_extension. Or am I missing something? Any help is very appreciated! Peter

[Serialization] Speedding up client-server communication

Hi there, I am in the process of speeding up communication between a server and its clients. Communication involves serialized class data. Messages can be as large as 100 kilobytes. I have done some measurements which have shown that, in a cluster with Gigabit networking, most overhead of the parallelisation seems to come from the Broker infrastructure and the process of (de-)serialization. Network latency and/or bandwidth seems to play only a minor role in this environment. Hence, apart from optimizing my broker, I'm looking for ways to optimize the serialization process, as used in my application. As messages are discarded as soon as they reach the recipient, versions of serialized data do not play an important role. Apart from decreasing the frequency and size of data exchanges and using binary transfers in a homogeneous environment, another way of speeding up the application seems to be the "Class Information" section discussed e.g. in http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_41_0/libs/serialization/doc/special.html . Also, BOOST_IS_BITWISE_SERIALIZABLE(my_class) might help. One question I have about this is whether a std::vector<POD> would be accessible to this optimization ? I use quite a few of them. [Interprocess] How to make a clean print using a managed file mapping?

What I am trying to achieve is to stop for_each if "getParamValue" returns false. However I can't find a way to use "return" in the second part of boost::lambda::if_, so I am using a dummy var "a" to check it after the loop completes. My question is: what is the right way to use lambda control structure in this case?

newbie question - memory leak while deserializing an object

Hi there! :) I've recently become familiar with boost, therefore I'm quite newbie and maybe the answer to my question is trivial. Below there is a demonstrative code fragment from a test client application where a server app periodically sends serialized objects to the client. The client reads the socket, re-constructs the serialized object from the stream using boost::archive::text_iarchive and makes some operation on it. Code is very simple and it works fine, however the memory is leaking. I think there is a problem with the usage of text_iarchive because if I comment the appropriate line out, the leaking stops. Of course the incomingTransferObject (and everything else in the progbam) are destructed properly, they does nothing with the leak. All that aside, here's the issue. This while-loop generates hundreds of thousands of handles in a matter of days. This causes all kinds of problems on the server (there's a similar issue with clients using identical functions) and either the server needs to be rebooted or the program shut down. I tried to use WaitForSingleObject() and then CloseHandle() but it seems to close the handle prematurely. This causes the client/server to not communicate and interrupt any data transfer. I am wondering if using boost::thread will make handling the destruction of the threads easier. I've been researching it but I can't find any solid information on whether or not CloseHandle(), or something similar, needs to be run. I'm just trying to see if using Boost is the right direction to go. Thanks, Kurt

JSON and ptree questions

Hi, I've been using the JSON writer with the property_tree. I find it difficult to write lists, since ptree::add does not allow empty paths, and that is required for the json writer to write lists. I have experimentally commented out two asserts, namely line 851, ptree_implementation.hpp: "assert(!p.empty() && "Empty path not allowed for put_child.");" line 200, string_path.hpp: "assert(!empty() && "Reducing empty path");" This is the only way that I've found to correctly write JSON lists in debug mode. Is there any way to do this without the trouble of commenting out the lines above? If not, would it not be a good thing to consider some other way to handle lists in the lib? / Gustaf

declaration does not declare anything - exception

Hi, When I compile with Xcode I get a 'declaration does not declare anything' error on boost/exception/diagnostic_information.hpp. However, the exception test run fine when I compile with bjam --toolset=darwin ... I am quite sure both use the same compiler (g++-4.0.1) and have the same options (I copied from the bjam set to Xcode). I now outcommented it (see below), but this is not a permanent solution. It should be valid, so what am I doing wrong regarding Xcode? Any help would be very much appreciated! Multicast Dual NIC Receive Problem

As a newbie to Boost asio, can please I ask for some guidance on the following problem (which does seem to get a mention from time to time on the boost lists). On a dual NIC Linux server, I am unable to get the sample boost asio multicast receiver ( http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_41_0/doc/html/boost_asio/example/multicast/…) to receive packets. It does work fine on a single NIC workstation running the same version of Linux by specify 0.0.0.0 as the listen address, but when I specify the listen address of the correct card on the dual NIC server (A.B.C.D), I get nothing. I have also tried the following but no luck: boost::asio::ip::multicast::join_group joinRequest(multicast_address.to_v4(), listen_address.to_v4()); socket_.set_option(joinRequest); As a sanity check: mtools mdump (http://www.29west.com/news/mtools/) shows that multicast data is coming through ok on the dual NIC server on the NIC listenaddress (A.B.C.D) eg ./mdump <groupaddress> <port> <listenaddress>. It would be nice if we could get the sample code corrected and working! I volunteer to help achieve this ... Regards, Andy

It works to use a fixed-size integer as well, but frequently you can shave a couple of bytes off the total by using a variable-length integer. Using Boost 1.41 / output directories

Hello, We are migrating to Boost 1.41.0 from boost 1.37.0. When using 1.41.0, the output path for the object files is different than when using 1.37.0. For ex: source code: home/proj/moduleA/1 home/proj/moduleA/2 home/proj/moduleA/3 All object files from moduleA/1, /2, /3 are as follows, when using 1.37.0 home/proj/build/gcc/threading/debug/moduleA/ When using 1.41.0, the object files are created as follows: home/build/gcc/threading/debug/moduleA/1 home/build/gcc/threading/debug/moduleA/2 home/build/gcc/threading/debug/moduleA/3 This is messing up our build esp the header file include paths becasue some of out .h & .cpp files are dynamically generated to the build location and compiled How can I make the object files layout similar to when using 1.37.0? Hi, I'm currently using MSVC9 and the code listed below doesn't compile, instead producing the following errors and warnings: Warning 1 warning C4100: 'x' : unreferenced formal parameter c:\program files\boost\boost_1_41_0\boost\concept\detail\msvc.hpp 20 test Warning 2 warning C4100: 'id' : unreferenced formal parameter c:\program files\boost\boost_1_41_0\boost\graph\dag_shortest_paths.hpp 86 test Error 3 error C2440: '<function-style-cast>' : cannot convert from 'int' to 'D' c:\program files\microsoft visual studio 9.0\vc\include\limits 109 test I know MSVC has issues with named parameters among other things, but I haven't been able to get it to compile with the non-named-parameters overload either, in this instance. What am I misusing and how am I misusing it? Also, I get the impression that the default combiner/comparer may be unsafe for floating-point comparisons and addition (with respect to over/underflow and comparing floating point values, I seem to recall it being a good idea never to compare with direct equalities, eg. x == infinity because of rounding issues). Might it be a good idea to further specialize appropriate areas of the algorithm code to account for this, or am I over-generalizing(specializing?)? If I have class with to versions of member function: const and non-const, and I use bind to access this member function, then I get a lot of errors. IOStreams: Memory-Mapped files: persistency-question

Hello, I'm using the class mapped_file from boost/iostreams to read and write to a file. I stumbled across a persistency-question which I couldn't answer from the documentation. When I'm using a normal c++ ofstream, I can be sure that after I called flush(), that the data is written to disk, even if my program crashes afterwards. But what if I'm using a mapped_file, is there any way to ensure that the written data will reach the disc, even if my program crashes at some later point? Thanks a lot for your help in advance. If you see in the documentation the function to specify for the in state reaction must be: "...|| Either the state defining the in-state reaction itself or one of it direct or indirect contexts..." since the base state (ActiveBase) is not known to the library the library is not able to use the function specified in the in_state_reaction template. Indeed if you specify Active instead of BaseActive in the in_state_reaction template (like in_state_reaction<Event1, Active, &Active::f>) things work a bit better. However this failes to compile anyway because the third parameters is seen to be of type "void (ActiveBase<Active, FSM>::*)(const Event1&)" and this doesn't match the required type. How to convert wide character strings to multi-byte strings ?

Hello What is the right way to convert from wide character strings to multi-byte strings ? In boost or in C++ if any ? For narrow to wide conversion I can do wostringstream streamMsg; streamMsg << "Narrow string"; wstring wstrMessage = streamMsg.str(); But I think that too is not a good way as it might not take the current locale / code page /encoding /whatever into account, but just widen the char (as a number) to an wchar_t. So what is the right way ? How do I write a codecvt facet for the default locale if I need one ? Thank you, Timothy Madden

array of small world graphs

Hi all, new to boost and experiencing a bit of an issue with generating a collection of small worlds. Basically i want for each pass of the loop to generate a small world with a certain pRewire. Here's some code typedef small_world_iterator<mt19937, Graph> SWGen; base_generator_type generator(1u); for(int i = 0; i < num_graphs; i++){ Graph g( SWGen( generator, N, k, pRewire, SWGen(), N ); . . some operations on g, i.e. path lengths e.t.c. } As it happens all graphs g are the same graph while what i want is a collection of different small worlds with the same pRewire. building boost under mingw-w64

Hi, Here some details about building boost under mingw-w64. I am using only "threads" and "date_time" libraries from boost and I started to building boost by command: bjam --prefix=c:\boost toolset=gcc address-model=64 variant=debug,release link=static,shared threading=multi --with-thread --with-date_time install and I got an error: ./boost/thread/win32/basic_ timed_mutex.hpp:152: error: cast from 'void*' to 'long int' loses precision This caused by the macros BOOST_INTERLOCKED_COMPARE_EXCHANGE_POINTER defined in interlocked.hpp. This macros has several definitions that depends on building defines. So I add BOOST_USE_WINDOWS_H define into the building command: bjam --prefix=c:\boost toolset=gcc address-model=64 variant=debug,release link=static,shared threading=multi --with-thread --with-date_time define=BOOST_USE_WINDOWS_H install add boost was compiled successful. The question is. Is it possible to build boost under mingw-w64 without BOOST_USE_WINDOWS_H define?

Hi all, I am currently trying to use kolmogorov_max_flow algorithm. I am building a graph from another lib, namely CGAL. I first build an arrangement of the plane, and use the dual arrangement representation provided by CGAL (see http://www.cgal.org/Manual/3.3/doc_html/cgal_manual/Arrangement_2/Chapter_m…) So, each vertex of the graph is a face of the arrangement, and each edge in the graph is an edge of the arrangement. CGAL provides a graph_traits to use BGL algorithm. However, I do not know how to use kolmogorov_max_flow with this graph_traits. The doc states that reversed edges must be included in the graph. The graph provided by CGAL already has reverse edges. How can I deal with that ? Could you please give me the way to call kolmogorov_max_flow withthe graph provided by CGAL ? Best regards, Olivier

multi_array: how can I efficiently have a column selected?

Hi, I am a real newbie here, so please excuse the naivity of the question. I, say, have a 3d array (fortran storage), and want to create a view to it so that I select say: grid[ indices[ [range(9,10)] [3], [range(9,10)] ]; I am not clear on exactly what this creates: from the documentation, I see this creating a 3d view. Can I use stl-like iterators on this, to use stl type algorithms? Is there any other repository of examples that would use high-level constructs like this so that I could look into a few examples? Performance issues aside, is there any reason why i should prefer to use boost::bind() by itself as opposed to boost::protect(boost::bind ())? In other words, is there a situation where given a certain functional requirement, boost::bind produces correct results but boost::protect(boost::bind()) doesnt? Resource constrained shortest path algorithm returns (check_path) invalid path

Hello all, I'm using the resource constrained shortest path algorithm from the boost graph library. It returns invalid paths as a result. The funny (well not really) thing is, that check_path itself detects the path as not correctly extended, infeasible and not a path at all. So it seems that my resource extension function works correctly. But the path is still returned as a Pareto optimal path. Do you have any idea on where the problem might be? Regards, Martin

Hi all, I have to store pointer of type (let's say) "employee" in a multi-index-container: struct employee { employee(int id):id(id){} int id; }; Further I have to check if every id is unique: employee* e0 = new employee(1); employee* e1 = e0; employee* e2 = new employee(1); employee* e3 = new employee(2); my_multi_index_conatiner.insert(e0); // OK my_multi_index_conatiner.insert(e1); // BAD my_multi_index_conatiner.insert(e2); // BAD my_multi_index_conatiner.insert(e0); // OK Can someone tell me how a typedef of a multi_index_container fullfilling prerequisities above looks? Or is a multi_index_container not the right tool? I've tried with a method in struct employee which returns the this-pointer. But this-pointer is const const and useless for my problem. compiler version building boost for vs2008

I am using boost 41. When building 41 I was using compiler version as 9.0 I built boost 42 in another directory, and for this built I used compiler version as reported by cl.exe. In my case it is 15.00.30729.01, so when using bjam I entered msvc-15.00 as toolset. Boost 42 was built successfully, but my program now does not link with linker complaining: fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'libboost_system-vc90-mt-gd- 1_42.lib' All my directories for boost 41 and boost 42 are the same, except that all libs in boost42/stage/lib have 1500 as part of the filename. When I copy "09" libs from boost41/stage/lib to boost42/stage/lib project complies successfully, so I know that dirs are not the problem. Question: how to resolve this problem? I can rebuild with 9.0 as compiler version, but I would like to undestand why 15.00 does not work.

[random] present library status and doc

Hi, What is the present library status of the random library,and in how far are the documentation and the code base out-of-sync ? I just tried a variate_generator with mt19937 as engine and a normal_distribution as distribution. IIRC, then some years ago this did not work as the normal_distribution requires an input in the [0,1] range, but now it seems to work. Looking into the header files I concluded under the hood there has been quite some development going on. Also for uniform_01 things apparently changed quite a lot, there is now also for example a new_uniform_01 etc. My main questions: Is the library presently under active development ? Shall I rely on the docs, or not ? For example, is above normal distribution now deliberately working, or am I relying on a deliberately undocumented feature which might be removed later ? Because many more distributions now exist I think the docs are just totally out of date. Any plans of updating them ? cheers, Thomas

wait/notify problem

Hi, I am trying to implement MANAGER:WORKER model using boost thread_group. I am using wait() and notify() for that. In my application, when thread1 wants to listen for some event from thread2, it executes wait(). when thread2 wants to inform about the event to thread1, it executes notify(). The problem I am facing is : thread1 first executes wait(). then thread2 executes notify(). but notify() completes its execution even before thread1 actually starts waiting for the event and notify() is goes in vain and then thread1 keeps on waiting infinitely. To avoid this, right now I am using sleep(1) before thread2 calls notify() to make sure that thread1 really reaches the actual wait state. But this is not a permanent solution; as it is possible that even within 1sec thread1 might not actually start listening for the event. (Also 1sec makes my applcation very slow). So, I just want to know if there is any such mechanism which will enable thread2 to keep notify()ing until the event is accepted by thread1? i.e. blocked notify(). Regards, Girish

I was just saying that I get different errors from the other person. I figured that xlC 6 was just too old to be standards conformant enough - especially considering that xlC 10.1 is out. Header only libraries, why not all?

Header-only libraries are great as that eliminates the need for building the libraries and then linking with them. But not all libraries in boost are header only, which is an inconvenience. Is this only because of 'legacy', and with time all libraries will move towards being header only? Or is there some technical requirement due to which some libraries just can't ever be header-only? Firstly. Thank you very much team Boost, it looks like it will be very useful and solve many of my coding problems. I can create an any boost::any a1; I can assign something to it a1 = string1; I can get it back out later std::cout<<any_cast<std::string>(a1); A boost any has a "type()" method. However this produced an error. std::cout<<any_cast<a1.type()>(a1);

String Pools: Reusing Memory

Dear all, First, may I blaspheme by invoking Java. In Java, a pool of strings, initially empty, is maintained privately by the class String. This is essentially a case of the Flyweight design pattern (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flyweight_pattern) where memory usage is minimised by sharing as much data as possible with other similar objects. Thus if we have two different instances of a string "foo" we shall reuse a single area of memory. In Java there is a concept of string internisation: http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/api/java/lang/String.html#intern%28%29 My question is, what is the best way to implement this in C++? Is the answer to this a combination of std::string and boost::fast_pool_allocator, as discussed here: http://www.gamedev.net/community/forums/topic.asp?topic_id=534428 Or are there better ways? Perhaps there is something like an intern_string? What would be the best practice where memory usage is an issue? Many thanks, Paul

[multi_array] deduce logical shape of "parent" multi_array from view

Hi, I am programming and adaptor of the HDF5 library to handle, to some extend, multi_arrays in an elegant way. It turns out that when I try to save a multi_array_view, with strides and offsets, etc. HD5F still needs to know the logical size (shape) of the parent array (the one that has contiguous elements in memory). The paradox is that in order to save an array view I need to know the original array. The question is, is there an (elegant) way to reconstruct the shape of the original array just from the multi_array_view. For moments it seems imposible because array_view doesn't know even the dimensionality of the "parent" array (or it does?). The task is further complicated because many members that may have this information are actually private or protected within multi_array_view. This is an example of what I want: multi_array<2> A(extents[10][10]); multi_array_view<1> Aview = A[3][indeces[range(0,10,2)]]; desired_function(Aview); --> returns 10, 10. Thanks, Alfredo

Absolute library path references - boost 1.41

Hi, I'm building Boost 1.41 in HP-UX with gcc and the HP-UX linker, and I'm getting problems similar to these: http://old.nabble.com/HPUX-aCC:-Howto-avoid-building-boost-libraries-contai… Namely, the problem is that the path to the boost system lib is keep as an absolute in lib filesystem. Removing the explicit dependency of lib filesystem on lib system solves the problem, but I then have to add the system lib as an explicit dependency on projects using lib filesystem (which does not happen in other platforms). Perhaps the proposed fix should be extended to gcc in HP-UX? Also, linking project executables with libs that are part of the same project (even if you install the build) has the executables keep the static depend paths on the project libs. So, if I define exe myexe : myexe.cpp /project//liba ; I will get myexe depending statically on the path where liba was built against the root of the project. if the liba project was in ROOT/libs/liba/bin/(...), I will have myexe statically depend on ROOT/libs/liba/bin/(...)/liba.so, even if I bjam install . Any ideas? Thank you
